board that strain. >> we begin with a story that sounds like something out of a hollywood thriller but stars three american heros. >> a passenger saw a man dragging a suitcase into a bathroom. that passenger becomes suspicious and goes to investigate. with 500 on board a 25-year-old more rack can man comes out of the bathroom armed to kill. he tries to rush him and falls to the floor. he manages to take his assault rifle. what he doesn't know at the time is he has another gun. he is hit the bullet marrnarrow misses an art re. while he plays dead scar lat

when you grew up here in sacramento are you faithful people, are you men of faith? >> yes. >> we met in a school, a faith school, a christian school in our middle school year and they had been going there and i just came for that year and then we all left the school but we made friends ever since. >> so you believe in god? >> yes. >> do you believe he has a hand in your fate and your life? >> especially this situation if any. >> has it struck you guys as you were growing up in sacramento learning about a kind and loving god there was a man over in morocco growing up almost the same age as you learning about a very different type of god in his mind, one who he apparently believed, wanted him to go kill a bunch of people the very same people you guys would wind up protecting? has it dawned on you between what you lived and learned and what this man lived and learned?

>> no. i haven't really grasped that aspect of it. >> don't really care about his life that much. >> is that how you are feeling? how do you feel about him? >> not really a fan. >> i think it's weird that he was only three years older than all of us. what is going on in his head to make him think that's okay? i mean, when everything was going down we weren't thinking, what religion does he practice or anything like that. he was there to kill some people. >> you were there to stop him. >> you are on the train you are on root to france. you are the one who first notes a sign of anger alek. what was the first sign? >> the loud noise and breaking glass. it sounded absolutely like a gun shot. iveng it was. i didn't think much of it until

i saw a train forter run past us away from the noise and this is what they woke up to. >> what did you see? >> a guy coming into a train car with an ak. >> what was he wearing? >> nothing. shirtless i think he had his backpack on the front. pretty much mostly thought oh man, no way. >> even with your military training does it dawn on you he's here to kill me? >> yeah, we knew that instantly i think all of us did. it was a a shock of there's no way this is actually happening. that was about the only thought i had. >> disbelief. >> did he have it pointed or where was the gun on him? >> he had it up in the air looked like it wasn't really working for him or he hadn't loaded it yet. >> ivengz trying to charge it. >> did you hear screams>> it was pretty quiet. >> i heard screams when the

glass started breaking but then it stopped. all i could here is foot steps walking in and him charging in. >> did he say anything? >> i didn't hear a grunt or anything like that. >> before you saw him you were taking a nap. you were the first to see him. did you have to wake these guys up or did you wake up? >> they woke up on their own. i image just the noise woke them up. >> the commotion of the train pulley going by i never heard the gunshot or the glass breaking. when he went by us i felt that movement i woke up to look at them and they were already ducking down. >> i looked over at you and we were both like. >> it was hard to comprehend. i looked at them they were looking back. so then when i look back the first thing i seen was a guy cocking an ak. is this real? this can't be real now. >> you said something to your friends?

>> i told spencer, like let's go, go get him, and he did. >> was there ever a thought on your part let's not go? let's stay right here. >> no, not really. >> i said let's go i didn't think he was going to go. >> alek told me i didn't get up and go until you were halfway there. go get him. then you did it. i was like. he was there quick. >> what happened was, i told him to go but when you are adrenaline is going you get tunnel vision so i am staring at the guy and i didn't notice that spencer had already left. i didn't see him until he crossed my path and he was halfway from. i was a good three, four seconds behind him. so he already was tackled him beating on the terrorist when i got there. >> let's talk about that moment. instinctually you go. anthony is not far behind. you are first aapproach the

terrorist. what was your first contact? >> i didn't really look at him. i don i don't remember like seeing anything. i am pretty sure i closed my eyes or something. i don't remember running up to him. i remember thinking i am about to get shot. i am going to get mowed down right now. then so i hit him and i am pretty sure he like hit me with the gun as i came up to him. i immediately started bleeding and my eye was halfway closed and kind of blurry and i was feeling for the gun. couldn't get it. kept pulling it away from me then i put him in the choke. >> you got around behind him and put him in a choke hold? >> i kind of tossed him, man handled him a little bit. >> you are there as well. you run around and take the gun from him. is that what happened? >> when i came up to him the ak was already on the floor i guess he dropped it in a scuffle. i don't exactly know. when i got up to him i kind of

blacked out for the whole run up there and the first memory i have is seeing him pull out a hand gun and i grabbed it with both hands pride it out of his hands and tried to shoot him with it. i guess that was probably about the time that suspensor was getting stabbed with a box cutter. >> it was weapon after weapon. ak-47, hand gun and box cutters. where was he getting them from? >> his pockets i guess. i don't know. i didn't watch him pull it out. but we are all surrounding him. spencer kind of has him in a bear hug at first. he didn't put him in the rear naked choke until the weapons were dropped for the most part. when he put him in the naked choke the box cutting got out. >> something you do in juddities sue. you go behind their neck and squeezes and cuts off both

carotid arteries. >> what did you do? >> before anybody picked up a gun we had hit him a twu times it was a scuffle. spencer was engaged always body to body grabbing him in some way when me and alek first ran up. i remember swinging. i don't remember when i hit him. i remember to hit him in some way. that's when the box cutter comes out. spencer screams deget the knife get the knife. we didn't notice it was happening at first. this happened in seconds. we tussled with him more he dropped the box cutter and alek picked up the ak and tried to charge that it didn't work again. >> it wasn't jammed when i picked it up. i believe it was on safe. he had fired it already. when i ejected the -- after it all settled down i picked the ak up to look through the rest of the train and i knew it wasn't

working so i cycled another round and when i ejected the previous round i saw the firing pin had struck the primer and the primer just didn't ignite. he had tried to shoot spencer. >> it didn't go off. >> when you think about that moment spencer, that's what happened god was there protecting you? >> the answer to that is next? plus what these three young men had to say about how this has changed their way they view 9-11. >> they just charge. they act with greatness. they acted unilaterally without asking permission, without seeking consensus. he did not want a job. he wanted to kill a lot of people. they had a split second moment to decide what to do. that is what is so incred iblg about this. they never hesitated.

what was happening if there wasn't the commotion at the bathroom at first. >> one passenger saw him going into the bathroom. he took too long with his suitcase. he wound up shooting another man a french american. >> he was waiting to go to the bathroom. this is a guy who doesn't want to be recognized and when he came out of the bathroom this is what he told us anyway, when he came out of the bathroom they stared at each other for a few seconds then he grabbed his neck and they got into a scuffle and the train employee broke them up thinking it was a fight. when he broke them up that's when he entered our car shot mark in the neck and that's when we intervened. >> mark who is the french american who approached him he got shot his wife saw it and that's when you three entered the scene. >> when you were in the scuffle with the guy did you ever wonder why are the other people on the train? >> i was more worried about

someone else coming in with a gun. >> we -- between the three of us on one guy it wasn't really a thing. >> he kept pulling the weapon. we need to knock him out. >> there wasn't any room to help out. >> how long did it take the whole scuffle from beginning to end when you first approached him to the moment you had him restrained. >> top two minutes. >> it was fast. it was three on one it was really quick. >> the longest time was waiting for him to passout. >> he is slicing you with a box cutter? did you feel it? he has gotten you with the eye? >> something dragged across my neck. i didn't feel that i looked over at my finger then i saw down ton i started to scream he's got a knife. he's got a knife. get the knife away. i pushed him away and kicked him a little bit and then that's when he kind of ended up in the middle of the train and that's

when we were surrounding him? >> did you feel pain at that moment? >> not at all. my adrenaline was going. >> did you have a conscious thought have i been sliced in the neck? am i in danger of dying? >> i had to tell him. after he crawled over and i was giving treatment i had to tell him. i didn't notice until i was standing over top of him. he moved a little bit the back of his neck opened up. i was like spencer don't move. he was already giving the first aid. your neck is cut. is it bad? not too too bad. >> i feel like he tried to lie to me a little bit. >> i was like all right. >> from the video it shows it was pretty bad. i didn't want him to start panicking because he was saving someone else's life. >> if you have a video on board of the train which is incredible to see some of the scuffle we see one shirtless man.

>> it was after he was tied up and he was already given first aid. it wasn't during the ordeal or anything. >> what is incredible is when you finally got him restrained you are bleeding out the back of your neck and if he had sliced just a little deeper or a little to the left or right? >> that's where my judeities sue came in they teach you how to tuck your body tight i had all of the right movements. it was pretty deep. i was hugging his back. i don't think he would have had the opportunity to do that. it could have easily happened if he was stronger. >> it was only about an inch away. >> no biggie. >> you could have been killed in a moment quite easily. >> post definitely. >> even if he was stabbed instead of slicing it could have been completely different, too. >> while you are bleeding out of your neck and your thumb is almost severed you went to save the life of mark who was the

first one shot by this terrorist and while you are doing that, you are patrolling the rest of the train looking for other bad guys. there was no stopping you guys in terms of your bravery and courage and willingness to put yourself in the line of fire. what the viewers may not know is you have medical training that's what you were doing in portugal. >> yes, ma'am. i am an emt. people say i am a paramedic but i am just an emt. >> you get promoted later. >> have you ever had to save somebody's life in this way before? >> never. i only worked in a pediatric clinic and ambulance services in the air force and not much happens there. >> stomach viruses. >> yeah. people want to get out of work the next day. >> not severed arteries? >> no, never. i have never even seen that. >> you get this guy down you wind up restraining him. is it true you used ties and scarfs from people on board the

train, hog tie him? >> that was mostly chris. >> he was a great help. he helped tie them up while he was looking in the other cars and spencer was obviously saving mark's life. so he not only did that but he translated for us with a lot of the french employees who were doing a lot of ridiculous stuff. he was a great help just for his language skills will. >> and hog tying. i don't know where he learned that one. >> he must have practiced that. >> what were the ridiculous things the train employees were doing? >> random employee the first time we seen him he ran over this is like really toward the end the guy is slipping away he runs over like let him go. let him go. >> he tells you to let him go. >> he started to slap the guy. i screamed at him and was like

get away from me. just back up. >> screaming at him. >> alek he told him to put the ak down. we were like where were you five minutes ago. get away. >> the first thing he did after all of that he comes back with wet paper towels to wipe our hands off. spencer is still holding this guy's neck. dude, we are not worried about cleaning up yet. >> you needed somebody to restrain the employee from you as you were restraining the terrorist. >> chris told him to get back. we have this. >> when you go patrol, these guys have got the terrorists under control you see if there are any other bad guys. was there any fear that you might find one? >> no. honestly it sounds cool and whatnot, but i just charged the ak, i was thoroughly convinced there was nobody on the train.

you could see that they were empty. i was carrying it down here by the receiver. >> what were they doing looking at you? >> again there was nobody in like -- i went three-cars back completely up. >> train still moving at this point? >> it was just stopping or had stopped at that point at the first stop. it wasn't at the station yet. everybody was crammed back into about the 3rd or 4th car back. >> they were all together? >> yeah. everybody pushed back away and they were crammed in that one little car. i asked them if there was anybody else hurt that we didn't know about but any other gunmen they said no so i went back up and started helping spencer with mark. cleared the ak. >> you are there with your hands inside mark's neck basically. >> my two fingers, yeah. >> he had the first aid kit he is instructing me what to take out of the first aid kit. >> i couldn't read what it was.

>> is it french? >> yeah. >> he had blood coming down his face spencer does. he can barely see. i am opening the first aid kit do you need this do that. i will hold him. nothing in the first aid kit. >> i fold his wife isabel to grab the sicissors and cut his shirt off. i wanted to check if he had in i other wounds. he could still have been dying even though i am stopping this. we kind of cut his shirt -- didn't cut it off all of the way. alek was sweeping his body looking for gunshot wounds. did he get grazed in the neck? >> i thought he got stabbed. looked like he sgot stabbed. >> he got shot through the back and it cape out his neck. >> pierced the left lung and came out the neck. >> when i first seen him after the gun was passed out i turned around this is the first time i

have ever seen mark through the ordeal. he has a whole hole in his neck. he's bleeding down his shirt. i am thinking he had gotten stabbed. i still had not heard a gun shot. >> what were you going to say about his wife? >> his wife kept insisting he got shot in the chest. i took the box cutter and cut his shirt off. >> it was pretty high up here. >> it wasn't funny looking back on it it was pretty funny. hey, man, you want to say a prayer with me? i thought he was dead. he was like, no, i think i am good. i was like, what? all right, man. cool. i said a prayer for him anyway. >> did you? >> he was complaining about his arm. >> in that moment bleeding out of the back of your neck saving his life with your hands in his

>> i said we would. >> the question is you are going to hesitate and you are going to die. >> you were in afghanistan for nine months with the national guard did you see combat? did you have any experience that would prepare you for this? >> i mean, training with like the firearms really helped afterwards once i got the ak and things like that. but frankly afghanistan was nothing like that train. we got rockets from time to time, things like that. but nothing like that. >> so now you are on your vacation celebrating your downtime with your best friends and you appreciate the irony of danger coming to you then, the terrorists coming to you then as opposed to in afghanistan. >> knottnot just that, just ther odds of it. er we are in france the one time i don't have a hand gun on me the one time we are all together again the coincidences are

you? >> literally spencer got up out of his sleep. we didn't see him or hours he was in the hospital, actually until the next day. i had to ask him why did get up that fast even i have to know that. i am talking like i looked back he's cocking the gun i look back over alek says go within 5 seconds. what whole ordeal was five seconds. i was like, i guess we are going. >> when it was all over and the train stopped and authorities got on the train from that point forward was there a moment between the three of you when you look ted at you? >> i was shouting at anthony to grab my stuff. i didn't want it to be confiscated from the police. >> our stuff was four cars back in the original part we were. >> i was screaming for alek to

something out knew something was going on took matter noose their own hands and maybe saved dozens or hundreds of lives. >> you know what's also inspiring about these three young men their humility and modesty. they are not pounding their chests talking how great they are. >> the french president gave them the highest award the legions of honor. he praised their heroism as a source of inspiration saying quote faced with the eel of terrorism there is a good that of humanity. you are the incarnation of that. back in the u.s. it was a hero's welcome fleet requewith a parad their home town of sacramento. >> it is not lost on me as the mayor the story we are celebrating today could be entirely different if it wasn't for the bravery offal thon knee, alec and spencer.

amazingly. >> my family rides that train all of the time or i have been on that train. it's a popular route. it was kind of humbling. i am not in the military so when tons of high ranking military are coming up to me and are congratulatory to me and lifetime of combat that's humble to me. >> how about you? >> pretty much the same. i had a moment where a little girl was asking me if i could fly and things like that. that made me melt. i was like oh my gosh i am these kids' heros right now. just the appreciation from everybody. people on tnot on the train wha they have to be appreciative of but they are. >> was your nickname captain america prior to this? >> yeah. yeah. i don't like to -- yeah. >> way to live up to your

nickname. >> thank you. >> what was it like talking to your parents for the first time? >> i didn't get a hold of my parents for a while. i tried to call my mom, tried to call my dad. my little brother was the first one to pick up. hey we were involved in an active shooter outside of paris on a train. tell mom and dad if do believe me. >> you are three american heros. i want an honest answer? have there been any tears? >> have i cried since? >> i have, yeah. >> the first time i cried when the girl asked me if i could fly. it was em bare racing her family and our family and it was at dinner. it needed to happen. >> it is on record. >> i have yet to cry. >> the interview is not over.

week or so many people compare what you did on the train to what the brave souls on board tried to do in stopping a terrorist. you guys were kids on the day of 9-11, 8 years old or so. do you have a different appreciation for what happened on that day this year? >> for sure. >> of course. >> hearing you say that gives me chills. i feel so much more connected to terrorist attacks and things like that and victims of terrorist attacks. if any one of six or search things had gone a different day. >> i visited the 9-11 memorial. first time in new york and at the memorial. this is about maybe less than a week after our ordeal happened and it give me a whole new perspective. i was like appreciative of the names, just like on the stones out there, because that could have been us just as easily.
