declaring a state of emergency and thousands told to get out while they can. >> it is like something you see in the movies. >> claudia got a first look at the damage. >> reporter: the valley fire overtook american communities north of napa but this area got the worst of it. you can see at this property what was the garage is smoldering and there is nothing left of what was once somebody's home. more than 400 homes and buildings were destroyed when the fire moved through the area friday night. look at this development called

anderson heights. the valley fire is 61,000 acres big with 5% containment and fire officials say one person has died. the details of the fatality have not been released. as many as 10,000 people are evacuated. many getting food and and assistance at the fair grounds where a well known wine town is hosting their neighbors thchlt high school, main gas station, and grocery store survived and that is good for the community of 13,000 people. the butte fire is about 60 miles southeast of sacramento and that burned 170,000 acres and it is 30% contained. the ross fire in the mountains

east of fresno has 130,000 acres burns. it threatened iconic trees but the trees are saved and the fire is 31% contained. as they make progress on those other fires those crews are diverted to the valley fire. they are hoping the cooler temperatures help them gain more of a foothold with only 5% contained today. >> we will have a closer look at the fires and developments out west. we will talk to the director of cal-fire. he has been a guest of ours before and he will join us later with the injured firefighters and the team battling the flames.

getting on the ballot in south carolina. that many not be an issue. he has where with all in alabama where you saw thousands of people coming out and the question is on policy and he has been putting them out left and right on immigration and soon on taxes. i think this debate this week will be interesting to see whether he gets attacked from other candidates on specific policy prescriptions. >> he is down by one. former texas governor rick perry dropped out. wisconsin governor took a plummet down from 13% in july to just 2% right now. is there an explanation that is at hand? is it just the rise of donald trump? >> more concerned about iowa

where he went through the basement as far as numbers for scott walker. scott walker was leading big and now fell down. he is starting to put out big ideas. big things. today he is in las vegas talking about an end to labor unions on a national front. something he didn't want to talk about before. he is drawing it out there. it is going back to his root as governor that helped him get elected three times and challenged the union. whether he is a regional candidate or too late for walker remains to be seen. >> so many of the candidates are former governors saying i know how to be an administrator and run the levers of power but the 6-10 poll showing this isn't what republican voters are in the mood for.

be. hillary clinton has lost a third of her support and most dropped from white women from 64% to 31%. that is huge in a female candidate who has talked about women's issues since the beginning of the campaign. seeing that drop, it is tie tod today -- tied to the honest and trustworthy numbers. >> we have sanders talking at brown university, which is typically with conservative school, but he is going to try to make his mark on the students there at liberty. this self-described democratic socialist is doing much better than anyone ever thought he would especially at the cost of hillary clinton. >> this is interesting speaking at liberty and taking the choice

the suspect, 25-year-old, joseph johnson-shanks refused to drop his weapon and surrender who we they caught up with him and they shot and killed him. three teens were arrested after hitting cars with target over the weekend. the police continue to patrol the freeways in massive numbers but cops say they are no closer to catching those responsible for the 11 shootings along interstate 10. eight bullets fired from a gun and three pellets or bb's. on saturday, cops thought they caught a break when something shattered a window of a car and

hundreds of home destroyed in a massive fire and dozens of home destroyed in another fire that is east of san francisco. thousands of people forced to evacuate and more warned to be ready to leave their homes as dry, windy conditions are fueling the flames. cal-fire director chief is here with us and he is in charge of handling all of the fires plaguing california. he walked in early august and we are on the outside, we admit, but it looks like looking in this fire over the weekend, this particular one north of wine country, took a dangerous turn. what happened? >> this is what we have been talking about all summer. we have been really building this since mid-july. we were coming off warm and dry condition and the fire in lake

county took off with 30-40 miles per hour and grew at an explosive rate. >> how challenging was that to address the fire and evacuate all of the people you had to evacuate? >> it was very challenging. this is the challenge we face with a growing fire. all we have time to do, and barely have that, is evacuate residents. our primary responsibility is protecting life and property. we are diverting away from the firefighter effort when we do that. it is critical homeowners take our warnings and get out >> where is the fire headed next? >> it is headed in all directions. it went from lake into somama and attacking the air of geysers and geothermal facilities but it is working to the west and

south. >> i am familiar with the geysers area. there is a lot of folks that lib up there, chief. >> absolutely. populated wine country and tourist and other destinations. >> what is the strategy? >> obviously we are looking forward to a little better weather for the next several days. we are bringing in resources from all over the state and outside of california. utilizing the california national guard and other aspects. and we will continue to make this fire a top priority. >> we know drought is a major issue for the fire and in california. do you have enough water to fight the fires or are you using other tools like controlled burns? how are you approaching this? >> we are using all of the tools available to us. water hasn't been a problem on this fire. we have a number of lakes close in hand for us to use. we have to order additional

resources to shuttle more water in some cases if we have to go further. the dry conditions is the critical factor in making the fires grow. the general lack of water over the last four years leaving just parched vegetation. >> we have a photo of you with one of injured firefighters. this is really dangerous work, isn't it? i know you have been at this job and working with fires for more than 30 years. what are firefighters facing? and how are they holding up? >> they are facing conditions like the first year rookie or the season veteran hasn't seen this conditions. i talked to these folks, many on the fire line and all saying this is dangerous. we have to be careful as we approach and attack these fires and understand the kinds of conditions we are facing. these firefighters like richard there in the picture were doing the initial attack. they were the first resource.

custody on an unrelated federal firearm charge and authorities trying to decide if they should keep him from behind bars. juan is live and brian is here as well. how do we move forward with this case? >> it is why kevin hasn't been arrested. we don't have bodies and we cannot determine if they are dead or alive. if they are dead, it doesn't mean it is a homicide. this has left a trail of no evidence, no forensic. in a day and age where everything is recorded or pinned out it is impossible to fall off the grid without being something wrong. we need more than a hunch to move forward.

arrested is because of his alleged drug use as well. and apparently what investigators found at his home, home depot receipt for bleach, hair and grease drain opener, cleaner and trash bags and found his truck along the highway where he met his parents here and there. his truck was found with what police say was blood and a bullet hole. how damaging is that to him, brian? >> it is damaging but i do agree with the no body, or the mechanisms of death, or the bullet hole in the window. maybe she was strangled. we don't know that. we don't know if any physical or

forens forensic evidence links the son to the father or mother. you need a little bit more than that. the good news is this, here is the good news, the fact of the matter is the son is in jail on a federal firearm charge. so that is good. he is in jail. he is incarcerated and that gives the police department and law enforcement opportunity to do more investigating. >> you say you go after the girlfriend? she was found driving the son to the home and said to the cops i wasn't there at their home and they found her on the video. you would go after her? >> you bet. she is meeked and she lied during the investigation. they could arrest her for obstruction of justice, perjury, put her in jail and put the pressure on her and say you better come clean or we will charge you as an accessory before and after the fact and
