there's something rivaling the crowd while i'm doing this show. a crowd is in dallas, texas getting ready to hear donald trump. they expect to fill 1,000 seats. trump on fire. hello, everyone. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." he's been leading the gop field in every major poll, and donald trump's numbers just keep on climbing. he's at 33% in a "washington post" survey. the only candidate who comes remotely close is ben carson. and the two continued their feud over the weekend. >> i don't think ben has the energy. ben is a nice man. but when you're negotiating against china, we need people that are really smart that have
2:01 pm
tremendous deal-making skills and that have great, great energy. >> i recognize that i have plenty of energy. you know, operating on people for 10, 12, sometimes greater than 20 hours at a time, making critical decisions after many hours of intense work. you don't have to be loud to be energetic. >> trump's name seems to come up everywhere, including the miss america pageant last night where this contestant made it clear that she is not a fan. >> i think donald trump is an entertainer, and i think he says what's on a lot of people's minds, but i think the republican party should be absolutely terrified of all the attention that he is taking from incredible candidates like jeb bush and chris christie who could absolutely do the job as president of the united states. >> and at the toronto film festival, george clooney sounded off on trump's past comments about mexico. >> clearly what he said is i d
2:02 pm
idiotic, of course it's idiotic. anyone who says intolerant of words as those should be laughed at, and i think pretty much eventually that's what history will do. >> so it's everyone versus trump, but will he have the last laugh? >> have you ever apologized, ever? ever in your lifetime. close your eyes, think back. maybe when you were little donny trump. >> i will absolutely apologize sometime in the hopefully distant future if i'm never wrong. >> oh, my god. >> well, many people were entertained by him, not just on the "tonight" show, but what do you think, kristin? will he work? >> do you think he's serious, he's never apologized, so is that part of the schtick?
2:03 pm
>> has anyone come forward to say he has apologized? >> i think if he had, someone would come forward. >> is this sort of like a persona thing or is he real? >> persona, there's another word. if he was ever going to apologize, twoovsh it would havn the last four weeks or eight weeks. he could have apologized to jeb bush, he could have apologized to carly fee reasonge feiorina. the man is going to sell out a 17,000-seat arena just by showing up. everyone would like to have that same kind of following. he's now tied -- remember a couple weeks ago we were like, yeah, he's winning the gop field, but up against hillary clinton he's getting destroyed. he was down 40 points a few weeks ago. he's bakesically in a head-to-hd
2:04 pm
tie with her. he's beating her but that's by two-point margin of error. >> let's talk about feuding and whether you think it's a way to accelerate the campaign. >> if you're at 33%, you're the undisputed frontrunner, so you can expect that people are going to be asked about you and they're going to comment about you as well. even at the miss america pageant, which at what point did the miss america pageant become like a current events quiz? i thought that was unfortunate for the girls that were competing, but i think we'll talk about that a little later. the question will be, are those 17,000 voters, do they make up a coalition that show up, which is less than four months from now in iowa, to actually cast a vote? it could be. if he's able to go all the way -- i'm not saying that he will, but if he does, then he's absolutely changed every traditional playbook that
2:05 pm
everyone has run for the presidential campaign. >> the ben carson feud. what do you think of that, him calling him ben. >> this is one of these races where we're actually calling a lot of these candidates by their first name. hillary, bernie, jeb. carly is another one, which is, again, a new, more maybe modern way of political campaigning. when you have dr. carson and donald trump as the two front leaders, then of course they're going to talk about each other. i think dr. carson is sun such mild-m mild-mannered way. i like when he said, you don't have to be loud to be energetic. and when you're performing surgery, you don't get to ask 20 people, do you think i should do
2:06 pm
this or not? you have to make life or death decisions right then. >> gentle ben, maybe that should be his slogan. >> maybe you just coined it right here. >> they keep asking trump when he's going to apologize. he should say, one thing i'll never apologize for, america. like president obama did. i'll never go to europe and apologize. he hasn't said it. it's like they're setting him up. i should be an adviser. >> would you like to volunteer your services? >> don't volunteer, you've got plenty of money to pay. >> someone taking things like a champ is carly fiorina. it kind of raised some of donald trump's assertions about her. >> look at this face. and look at all of your faces. the face of leadership. this is the face of a
2:07 pm
61-year-old woman i am proud of every year and every wrinkle. >> i think she looks great, and i can't see a wrinkle on her. >> i think she looks amazing. this is basically harkenni inhak to last week where donald trump was quoted as saying, look at that face, who would vote for that? he then said he was talking about her persona. she was able to take that insult and turn it into a positive thing. i think that was the most effective political ad of this season so far. >> people are really responding to it. it's getting a lot of play, people checking it out. >> i think that's exactly right. the women's media center did a study in 2013 where they looked at how sexist attacks or even just comments about women's appearances could even be positive actually affected their numbers. and the only thing that would change the trajectory was if they responded. so if you stay silent in the face of it, your numbers will start to tank. but if you respond, actually you

can recover and even gain. she did exactly what you're supposed to do, which i think a lot of times the conventional wisdom is just to ignore it. >> she's a strong businesswoman. she's found a way to monetize this, make the ad work for her. >> great ad, by the way. they put that together fairly quickly ahead of the debate. if she takes that exact ad and brings it to the debate wednesday night, she could say, here's the work of starting at the bottom and working your way up, maybe she'll get some headway. we're talking about these things going on, and look at what's going on. hillary has pointed at trump saying, trump is condescending, he doesn't respect women. hillary is sliding among women.
2:09 pm
donald trump is rising among women voters. for right now, the female vote, women's vote, is becoming the same as the gop vote. we want anti-establishment. the guys are the one who seem to be the most anti-establishment. right now trump owns it. >> that's why this ad was so brilliant. when i watch it, i want to go work for carly fiorina. it's fantastic. she took a shot from trump and then turned around and shot at democrats. she said, don't talk about women's issues, they're everyone's issues. she didn't go back at trump, she went after democrats. >> very interesting point, tom, because those who have actually gone up against trump and see their numbers fail, and i think the first casualties of that was last week when governor rick perry, for a lot of different reasons, had failed to gain traction, and one of the things he had done was push back hard against donald trump, and it
2:10 pm
actually didn't work for him. >> talk about the message here, though, in terms of women. i saw your reaction. we talked about trump's numbers and how he is rising and climbing with women, while as eric points out, hillary clinton is on a decline. >> that's true. although i did read something in iowa where he's declining with women there. i think there are a lot of sources at play and it will take a while to straighten things out. i think this debate coming up wednesday night is very important for everybody, but especially the frontrunner. another thing to keep an eye on and chris hit on it. women are more educated than ever. they're making more money than ever. there are less women in the workplace now than before, but they have more children. they're making decisions on their own. some women are deciding to go forward and have a family without getting married, and so there are lots of different forces at play in this election. women's votes will be very
2:11 pm
important. 53% of the total electorate will be the women's vote. >> they're making the decisions of the family. health care decisions, financial decisions, purchasing power. sorry, eric. basically, you two can go home. alison, you're in charge of this. you can stay for now, boys. ahead, trump's replacement on "celebrity apprentice" has just been named. is it a woman? who is taking over for the donald. a hint: he's a legal immigrant. stay tuned. at mfs investment management, we believe active management can protect capital long term. active management can tap global insights. active management can take calculated risks. active management can seek to outperform.

donald trump's campaign is largely focused on illegal immigration and his run in the polls are giving voters a clear idea on where he stands on the issue. here's ben carson. >> until we seal our borders, everything else is irrelevant. but let's say we get them sealed, because of the carter
2:16 pm
administration, that would be done in the first year. i would give them a six-month period. if they register and they have a pristine record, they haven't been causing problems, i would give them the opportunity to become guest workers. not citizens, not voting people, not people who get goodies. in terms of them becoming citizens later on down the road, if they've done things the right way, we the american people will decide what the criteria for that would be. >> so he's putting out some specifics, k. g. >> a lot of those things he mentioned would be probably very tough to get through any congress, but at least he's got very specific things. people can pay attention to that, six months, no amnesty, things like that. >> guest worker, he's talking about not just handing over entitlement, they have a pristine record. i like the way his mind works, the maliceness he goes through to prevent a problem, and then he says, yes, of course i would seal the borders.
2:17 pm
he's talking about how he would deal with a tumor or disease, and you stave it off to control the area, you control the threat. i understand the philosophy there, because then you can kind of contain the problem and work from -- he's also saying, look, i'm going to give them an opportunity. please register. you have six months to register, let us know who you are, identify yourself and we're going to work with you within the system to do this in the right way and a legal way. >> that's excellent. we're having a great vocabulary lesson today. do you expect illegal immigration to be one of the big issues at the debate this week? >> yes. only because it's what really started the trump bandwagon. but here's the thing, though. look, every single republican candidate on that stage is going to say, we can't do anything, it's irrelevant until after we seal the border, but no one has a real defined plan of sealing the border, except the wall, and
2:18 pm
everybody laughs at the ability to build a wall. this isn't about donald trump. if you're not going to build a wall, how are you going to seal the border? the only way to do it is get very specific about the amount of border agents you're willing to put on that border. rudy giuliani put 20,000 border agents along the border. he said every 50 miles or so, 50 people, or something to that effect. he has a specific plan, but you need the specifics. i keep hearing it time and time again, gop-ers saying, how are you doing to seal it? i want to know. >> we're going to talk about how republicans are doing it and focus on the african-american community. >> many luminary figures of the black community have been members of the republican party, a party that should push for hard work and self-reliance and mechanisms for removing oneself
2:19 pm
from a state of dependency to becoming a part of the fabric of america. i believe that black people, just like any other people in our country, are listening. and they're looking for solutions. and they're not going to just blindly follow someone because they say do what i tell you to do. >> great interview aside from the cell phone violation. i don't know if you heard that. >> he has an interesting ring tone, doesn't he? >> he might have had an emergency. do you think he'll make any headway on wednesday? >> i do, and i think his advice is appropriate. what i would do as a republican candidate, go through black neighborhoods and say, what have they done for you? join us. that's all you have to say. we're open, come, please join us. >> there might actually be some
2:20 pm
receptivity to that. george bush made some inroads into the african-american community, and unfortunately after katrina, a lot of that ground was lost. african-americans care about the same things everyone else cares about. they want to have their businesses, and i think there is an opportunity there and there are certain candidates -- rand pa paul. if they just show up and talk to them about the same things they all talked about, you might have some response. he does have a book coming out in october, it's called "a more perfect union," which the timing of that book is probably very good for him. i think the timing is smart. >> honestly, i would be remiss

2:22 pm
in my opinion, scott walker, this is make or break, because if he doesn't have an exceptional debate, i think the money goes elsewhere. >> hopefully we'll be able to talk more about tomorrow, because i think you'll like what he said about unions today. joe biden is still considering a presidential race. there are new signs he's seriously considering joining the race. kirsten has that coming up. ♪ [ male announcer ] whether it takes 200,000 parts,

>> i'm saying the last eight years has all been about personality. >> and also, ronald reagan, when he first decided to run for president, a lot of people said that was a joke, an entertainer -- >> he was also governor of california. >> okay. also an entertainer. work with me. finally miss america was crowned last night. miss georgia, betty cantrell, took the crown. during the questions portion of the contest, she was asked if tom brady cheated at football. >> did he cheat? >> that's a very good question. i'm not sure. i would have to be there to feel the ball and make sure if it was deflated or not deflated. if there was question there, yes, i think he cheated. if there was any question to be had, i think he definitely cheated and that he should have been suspended for that. that's not fair. >> thank you. the judges decided that was good enough. miss georgia is now miss america 2016. it's likely had nothing at all to do with the swimsuit competition, because i hear that

only accounts for 10% of the scoring these days. kg? >> what's wrong with the swimsuit competition. >> nothing at all. that's only 10%. i have numbers because i love numbers. swimsuit 10%, talent 30%. that question was worth 20%. >> okay. i mean -- >> would you like to answer? >> how are they supposed to know the answers to these questions? i do this for a living. did she cheat or not? >> you can give your opinion. i want to touch it, i want to feel it, i want to get the evidence, i want to get back to you. >> that was the answer i was looking for when i threw this segment out. >> but you're like swimsuit, 10%. when did miss america become a current events quiz? >> i love a current events quiz that's that's a thing.

i sure had a lot on my mind when i got out of the hospital after a dvt blood clot. what about my family? my li'l buddy? and what if this happened again? i was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. then my doctor told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... turned around my thinking. don't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily...
2:55 pm
and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. eliquis treats dvt & pe blood clots. plus had less major bleeding. both made switching to eliquis right for me. ask your doctor if it's right for you.

finally got this job as a tailor, a true rags to riches story. a great obituary if you have time to check it out. >> was he obama's tailor as well? >> every president. >> that was cool. touching. interesting as well. i approve of this. thank you very much for your service. airman spencer stone is going to be honored in a ceremony with a purple heart. normally they're only for combat actions but in 2013, they changed the rules a little bit, and i think it's important in the times we face today, and they should be applauded for their service. all right. remember when we all watched the same tv shows?

"the golden girls" was about old ladies and i enjoyed it in junior high and high school. it attracted a huge demographic. >> you're kind of like a golden girl. >> i am like a golden girl. here's a picture of the cast as we remember them. yes, that was fantastic. >> i see what you did there. >> he wishes so much he was. >> he was there in spirit. >> he opened the show the other day with the golden girls music. do you remember that? i think we all remember that jimmy carter announces he has cancer. he is 90 years old, and i think if i was 90 years old, i would be taking it easy. he and his wife have a bible study, and after he announced this, a lot of people put on their bucket list to go to his bible study, and it's gone from a couple hundred people to a thousand people right after he announced it, and now they've had to expand it and he's
