it is a very late night. and donald trump is the national and front runner in most of the early voting states. last night he novembers los angeles for what he billed as a national security speech on the deck of the uss iowa. he did talk about veteran's issue and rebuilding the military as he said for a number of weeks now. here is a sambling of the national security speech. >> we'll create a new system and take the system apart and if they are not doing the job. the veterans will go to private doctors and public hospitals. and right now, you know it, we have illegal immigrants that are treated better than our veterans. it is not going to happen. >> reporter: the second part of that is rhetoric about the illegal immigrants and the first

part about the doctors that are not part of the va. that's what they are supposedly doing. trump will be under serious fire by dr. ben carson. he's surging in the polls and in new hampshire there is a poll out that he is in the lead but it is a virtual tie. and carson and trump have been trading elbows in the case of trump and carson who is trying to avoid the fight. and that is catching on with early republican primary voters and then carly fiorina. she made the prime time debate stage and has been in a spat where he talked about her face and she made an a d, firing back. and carly fiorina has an opportunity. and three outside onners are the ones that the nation will be watching most tonight and the

message is by far professional politicians are a pain in the the neck and they are looking for a different perspective and approach. that leaves eight establishment type. governors or senators or former candidates including mike huckabee. it is a wide open field that is basically in the low single digits and tied in the basements and all of them looking for break out moments. next time there is a debate, it is entirely there will not be 11 candidates and it will be back down to ten. and the hope to get it down to 6 or 7 by next year. >> thank you very much, carl. jon? the moderator of the debate promises to grill candidates on foreign policy. donald trump and ben carson and carolina fiorina. trump and carson have stumbled

on policy questions before. we'll talk about it with a b stoodard and columnist for the hill. so is this a make or break moment for donald trump, a b? >> well, i think when we say something is going to break donald trump it doesn't happen. but certainly donald trump's answer in a recent interview with hughhewit on security and it was abysmal and he does what he does when he doesn't do well. he attacks the radio announcer and not host. tonight he will expect foreign policy questions. i don't know if he will answer them better. he will probably say the questions are unfair and he's shown a lack of interest in

talking about the threats over seas and home land. carly fiorina taking a huge interest and comes well versed for the discussion of these matters. it is a contrast and i am not sure it will sink donald trump. >> the standard answer is i will hire good and smart people to take care of that? can he get away with that? >> your question make or break. the one guy the debate doesn't make or break. he supposedly gave a foreign policy speech yesterday which was a stream of consciousness that had nothing to do with foreign policy and so i think he's probably safe. in terms of his standard answer. i am in favor of delegating the

people and ronald reagan was great. but know what you don't know in order to figure out the right people to hire and it is not clear that trump knows what he doesn't know and that he understands what he has to go to school on and we'll probably see that in the debate. he would help himself if he surprised everybody with policy specifics. but he would have helped himself in the past and i doubt he will change his path. why should he. he's doing great. >> ab, last time around republican candidates were gathering to deny president obama a second term, one debate would come and a new candidate would shoot to the top of the heap. do you see that happening or will donald trump will be on top? >> i think you are right in carl's report shows we are looking at top outsiders.

all. support is surging to the outside candidates and not current governors or senators and eyes are on fiorina, and carson and trump. and there are others in the field who will be focusing on who really have to keep their campaigns alive. jeb bush might not disappear if he had a bad debate. scott walker is on life support. he has to come back or he will be written off by his donors. kasich had a good debate and so did rubio. it did the not elevate them. and i don't know if we will have a new front runner. >> jonna, the moments of the debate are haphazard but comes across as who is perceived to have a good night or winner? >> in the first debate. ben carson didn't have a great

night but had a wonderful moment or two and that launched him on his way. marco rubio had a consistently fantastic night but not knock it out of the park moments that was repeated on the internet and news and that's what they are going for. a lot of these people may just decide not to attack trump at all and attack jeb in order to prove they are anti- establishment, too. don't lump me in there with jeb. i am an outsider. cruz will take more shots at jeb than he will at donald trump and i can see the others following the same strategy. >> he and donald trump are almost like buddy, buddy. and a b stoodard and jonna, thank you. >> and we'll hear from you, which candidate has a break out

makes you take more risk. government still incentizing. and they will lend to anybody that has eye heart boat and maybe not a job. those perimeters are in play still. they are incentives for banks to lend people mortgages and still the banking system is still big. merrill lynch is gone and citigroup and lehmans is gone. >> that is interesting, some have said to me as i have done interviews and preparations for the fed and dates like this for example, the debt that banks were handling has somehow been moved around balance sheets and not solved in a lot of ways it is moved on to the government's balance sheet. and the toxicity did not leave the system.

are we better off. >> i think of lehman. i think don't get caught stock picking. it was at $86 and then twrent months later at 0. don't get leveraged up as an investors. and that creates a lot of risk. and don't get caught speculating and they betted that mortgages would go up and real estate up. and they were wrong. >> keith, do you agree with that? >> no, i take issue with that respectively. i think the risks are more concentrated and we learned that the government is messing with things and they don't understand. and regulators are outclassed and wall street likes it that way and why the penalties are a slap on the wrist. there is not a criminal prosecution out of this. and the final linchpin, the

american public. they have socialized risk. and the american public is holding the bag. >> is that what the fed has done? >> it is it a combination of factors. it is what the fed and regulators haven't done and wall street encouraged them not to do. >> too big to fail exists at that point. >> charlie, you are sounding like bernie sanders and i never thought i would say. that here's what bernie. >> don't get carried away. >> and here's what bernie said. it is time to break up the banks and the casinno gambling diverted all income. >> bernie sander ares wants to socialize the banks. and i would say this, banks should be smaller and what is a free market way to do that. government insurance. if you will want to be risk taking and customer deposits,
