if you have not seen it, here's what happened when mr. trump opened the floor to questions in rochester, new hampshire. >> we have a problem in this country. it's called muslim. we know our current president is one. you know he's not even an american. but, anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. that's my question. when can we get rid of them? >> we're going to be looking at a lot of different things. a lot of people are saying that. a lot of people are saying that bad thingings are happening out there. we're going to be looking at that and plenty of other things. >> the campaign started taking incoming almost immediately. the trump camp put out this statement. the bigger issue is that obama is waging a war against christians in this country.

that satisfied no one. >> he knew or he should have known that what that man was asking was not only way out of bounds, it was untrue. if that person had been in my event, i would have called him out on it. i would have said that has no place in a political setting. >> mr. trump isn't the first politician to do this in order to win votes. in fact, that's precisely what every republy dan presidential candidate is doing when they decline to denounce mr. trump's cynical strategy. >> we have a powerful line-up tonight.

andy, thank you for being here tonight. >> thank you. >> so, what officially is the defense being offered by the trump campaign on this? as far as what donald thinks, we know that president obama went to reverend wright's church. we remember reverend wright saying god damn america. that's in the bible. i think more than anything, there's just confusion on our end as to why one tiny question is sort of big media controversy right now. >> it's because the guy -- a couple reasons. number one, he seem today be condemning muslims as a group, as opposed to radical muslims! the questioner was, not don trump. >> right. right. exactly. correct. >> and then number two, he said

barack obama is a muslim and he's not a citizen of this country. and donald trump did not correct him. >> well, that's not correct. we know that barack obama is a citizen of this country, one of the reasons this is a fox news alert. a suspect has been arrested in connection with a string of shootings along a phoenix area freeway. a spokesperson says a person has been taken into custody in a walmart in glendale. >> without a lot of efforts from hard working men and women in law enforcement. the efforts of arizona law enforcement could not be any

more clearly defined than by this case, tonight. the gentlemen behind me and their agencies with the phoenix police department and fire department and efforts to help us with emergency operations center was a great place to launch this investigation from. over two weeks, arizonains have been terrified on shootings occurring on interstate ten. along with that, i think we had copy cats. today we've made an arrest on i-ten shootings that occurred on august 29th and august 31, 2015. subject is in custody because the weapon that he owned is forensically linked to these crimes. arizonans have been incredible in efforts to provide leads and tips, i cannot tell you how much

it inspires me to lead in a state where a community has such trust for law enforcement as they do here in arizona. the governor provided me with everything that i needed to conduct this investigation, their support and technology and finances that went along with running this investigation. are there others out there? are there copy cats? that is possible. we'll continue to investigate. tonight, i cannot give you a lot more detail as interviews and search warrants are underway. but i thought it was important for arizonans to know the weapon and man we believe was responsible for what started this spree in arizona is in custody. thank you. >> just a couple brief questions. you're saying this man was responsible for the first two. not the other nine? >> no, sir. not saying that.

right now, we know that he is related to the first four shootings due to the weapon he owned being involved in the shootings. >> how they're able to identify him as the shooter. >> he is forensically linked to the weapon involved in the first four shootings. >> linked to the weapon. how did you find them? >> i'm not at liberty to discuss this at this time. there will be more to follow. i know filling in the pieces is important and you're looking for that. i can't give it to you now. we've had this guy just a number of hours. there is a lot to be done before we get to that point. i thank you for coming out and we'll talk later. >> thank you. >> a suspect has been arrested in connection with a string of shootings along phoenix-area freeways. the arizona department of public safety and the s.w.a.t. team being credited with his capture. there have been 11 confirmed

shootings of vehicles since august 29th. most occurred along interstate 10. a 13-year-old girl's ear was cut by glass after a glass shattered in a vehicle she was riding in. some motorists altered their communities to avoid driving on i-10. a suspect is behind bars in connection with a string of shootings along phoenix-area freeways. now we return to "the kelly file". ically has said -- and answer the question, one time he said, he produced the birth certificate, mr. trump. >> well, if you believe that. but i'm not going to get into that right now. it's position it's a forgery. >> having said all of that, the hi pock ra sill from -- hillary clinton went out there today.

you would have thought he was insulting her granddaughter. totally and factually untrue. it is prejudiced. it is discriminatory. listen to what happened when steve kroft asked her about this issue back in 2008. >> you don't believe that senator obama's a muslim. >> of course not. there is no basis for that. you know, i take him on the basis of what he says. and there isn't any reason to doubt that. >> the new york times called that one of the sleaziest moments in the campaign. >> it's uncomfortable to watch, etch now. a lot of the pundits that don't like domd trump are piling on.

when i watched this moment, i was astonded. he didn't do what he usually does afterwards which is sail right into the media hurl cable, try to deflect or defend what he did. instead,trump put out a statement blaming the media. and that usually works for him because it's not too popular with a lot of americans. not in this case because people have seen that clip over and over and over again and they can decide for themselves how donald trump should have handled that guy. >> and he bailed out of this event tonight, krieted some business reason that has not yet been produced publicly. and now we wond wond ere why he didn't attend one of the important e haven'ts of campaign 2016. >> i think for the first time in the campaign, you're seeing a donald trump who is off blanks. he doesn't want to reopen the past berther controversy.

it's almost like she's accusing him of taking an unscheduled vacation. i've got to go. >> also joining me tonight, on the other big news that came out of south carolina. those two are next. and a 14-year-old muslim student is arrested after bringing to school a mysterious e lek fronic device that they said looked a lot like a bomb. now, some on the left are blaming profiling and tripe trying to make him into a national hero. and then, we have a killy file investigation into the group that staged what was supposed to be a big charity event for vets, except this group is no longer a

senator, great to see you tonight. let me just ask you since you haven't spoke here on fox since the debate. what did you think of it? >> one more stop in the process. we didn't talk about the national debt. we didn't talk much about the economy. and we had a three hour debate and those issues weren't touched upon. i was disappointed by that. these are important issues. for people trying to make up their minds, they want to know what your ideas are about impacting your lives. >> speaking of the issues, let's talk about the foreign policy. we've seen in so many polls in this election cycle, they want an outsider. two-thirds plus of the republican voters are saying we want somebody on the outside of.

you had a nice retorte to that arguemented. >> i thrill the deeper arguemented is not simply what job the people have. republicans and americans don't want to keep electing the same kind of people. that's the reason i ran for the senate in 2010. i was a private citizen. the entire republican party was against me. and it's the reason why i'm running for president. i know that we're not going to be able to change the direction of this country unless we have someone in that office that's in touch with what's happening with people's lives and closes this enormous disconnect between washington and both parties and the lives of our people. and then when it comes to national skoourt, look, that's the most important obligation of the federal government. it's the one thing the federal government can do is keep us safe from foreign threats. and, frapgly, under this president, is not doing a very good job of it. >> you see, you know, there was some very cogent, substantive arguments. donald trump says i may not be

an expert on foreign policy, but i will apoint the best people. i have the best people advising me. why couldn't that work just as well as somebody like you who's been steeped in foreign policy for the past five or six years plus. >> well, again, that's the thing carli demonstrated. if you take the time you can learn a lot about these issues. you theed to be prepared the very first day in office. to make judgment decisions bagsed on facts around currencies that ewe do not control. often times, they're unexpected. and so, my point, the other night was whoever we elect, and i hope it will be me, obviously, better be someone who's prepared to deal with national security on their very first day in office. >> i have to ask you about donald trump today whofgs in the news because he did not correct someone who questioned him at a town hall when that person and that we have a dent obama problem with muslims in this

country. do you believe that donald trump should have pushed back for that person and should have stood up for the president? >> i do. ipd have befo i have before, in the past, myself. and second of all, that's not true. the president has made very clear what his faith is. christianity, if someone says that they're a christian and that's what they are, we accept that. my problems of the president are not perm. my problems with the president are his policy decisions. they're dangerous for america on national skoourlt. and they're bad for the economy and the individual lives of our people. >> last, but not least, the news today is that allegedly, your deputy campaign manager rich beesa was accused of assaulting rand paul's national political director, john jo. he said he was punched in the fact. the video kind of shows a shove. here it is.

breaking tonights you just heard from senator marco rrubio. most of the gop field took the stage one after the other to be the with the exception of donald trump. each of the kand tats trying to build obama wednesday's debate and score points with a key group of conservative voters. here's just a little of what we heard. >> i was a disrupter in tallahassee. we need a line-item veto power. i vetoed 2500 separate line items in the budget. >> the only way to do it is

we've got to take it on and bring power out of washington and back to the people. >> e don't buy this nonsense about all the senate rules. the democratings don't play by those rules. it's time we sent the president a bill that defunded planned parenthood with 51 votes in the united states senate. >> the worst part is that the majority of americans disagree with the tearing up of babyings and the destroying of human life. why should their taxpayer money be used to fund that kind of activity. what happened to america? >> what a difference saying what they want to say and the way they want as opposed to a debate

stage where they're being pitted against one another with a goal of making them fight. >> exactly. that's sort of roman gladtorial yal stuff. every question was set up as a fight between two republicans. and i do think this is a better way to get at what these candidates are. it does allow them to say what they have to say without having to get personal and without having to do at home. and the other interesting part is when you set a debate up, as one remust bely can against another, you rarely here about what the main argument in the election ought to be about. the two parties arguing their plit political philosophies. the republicans have now spent the summer when they've allowed

the democrats to get away with sort of being shunned on almost. not mentioned as much as you would lieg in the run-up to a general election campaign. >> even in the wake of a debate now, what we heard over the past day has been some of the candidates x too, trying to, it sounds like, you tell me, diminish what many believe was a win for truch. >> we knew the that arty no mat matter ma was going to happen. >> well, i don't totally disagree. i think they wanted to have some kind of a narrative. they fed her soft balls. you know, i don't get that whole situation.

some of the things that she was asked were ridiculous. >> well, sore loser. there r were no easy questions here. we had one instance where donald trump was challenged and carlie did it. it seems to me did it in a very concise and cutting way. and i could understand why trump would be upset about that. it wasn't because he was fed easy questions. in fact, i feel the other great moment she had was when he referenced another candidate, she spoke about iran and planned parenthood. sort of an odd pair of topics. in a single riff, which was riveting. and that was her other moment. that was a positive moment. it was not about attacking on

the republicans. so she clearly was a winner. the idea that she was set up, everybody was ready to declare the winner is nonsense. you watch the debate. it was clear. >> i would add that rubio, as i said on the night right after the debate, he was a close second. >> what did you make of rubio just now. mike huckabee said he would handle it differently. he didn't explis sitly rip on trump. is this going to be an on going thing? and how much damage, if any, did trump do himself there? i'm not sure he did himself a lot of damage. what he said about mexican americans and what he said about john mccain. there's always the afterstory.

there's always explaining what he really meant or what he said he meant. so he's always cleaning um after himself. in fact, his numbers have gone up. i'm not sure how long that persists. the two dangers for him are the one where he gets very exciteling, very boring. after a bile, you have to come up with some programs. the other dangerer is he imbloed. there's a cumulative effect here where you say do you want to dock a guy in the general election campaign who's collecting himself every three

possesses a device that is intended to cause anyone to be alarmed or a reaction of any time by law enforcement officers. >> i tried to call my parents, but they were like you're in the middle of an interrogation right now and you can't call them. >> now, the school and irving police are being villainized for overreacting. achmed is being praised for i . ingenuity and for having the skill and the ambition to build something cool. >> the white house even suggested that achmed was the subject of prej digs. prejudice. listen. >> this episode is a good illustration of how stereotypes can prevent even good hearted people who dedicated their lives to educating young people to doing the good work that they set it to do. >> hillary clinton also indicated a role here.

new jersey governor chris christie thinks the school did overreact, but that we live in extraordinarily dangerous times and people are concerned. groups are fighting to get his us pence reforced. he had his suspension upheld. >> trace, thank you. joining us now, mark furmman and richard fouler. i mean, you've got to feel bad for the kid and you've got to feel bad for the school. this is what we want from want to make america great.

sadly, because of over-policing, because of fear, because of stereotype, because of xeniphobia, he is now a victim for being really smart. and that is really rare. >> at the end, you take it to a far out place. mark, you've got to feel bad for the kid. the kid not do anything wrong. but did the cops do anything wrong? did the school do anything wrong? to a person, everybody that i talked to said the thing looked like a bomb. it looked like a bomb. >> well, certainly, megyn, there's not very many people, except for the bomb squad, that knows what an explosive time device looked like. you're talking about police officers that are put in the position that they have to do something. now, i don't feel sorry for achmed. he offered no explanation to the police. he wouldn't cooperate. he was passive aggressive --

>> passive aggressive? >> by all news reports. you have to talk to the police if you want them to understand what's going on. if you do not explain something completely, they have no kwhois but they have to take the device, they have to make notifications and they have to at least return the child to his parents and tell him what the situation is. we have been told by authorities, if you see something, say something. you never know when they're going to pop up. if you see something, say something.

so why don't these authorities get the benefit of the doubt in a situation that obviously wound up terribly. but why don't they get some benefit of the doubt? >> well, there's a couple reasons for that, megyn. let's be real for a second. the schoolhouse should be a safe and welcoming environment for students. not places where 7th graders and 8th graders get handcuffed. >> that teacher should have took him to the principal's office.

>> the part of the people that has this so out raged is because of pop tart kid. he chewed a pop tart to look like a gun. but this kid has something that, objectively, looks a little like a bomb. but because he gets in trouble, it's racism and he goes to the white house. >> well, what is the race of the pop tart child? i believe he's male white. he has absolutely no right if there's any profiling. >> there's the device. >> what are we going to do here. and i also feel like -- the only reason while i feel like i'm being set up. >> it's mark's turn. go ahead, mark. >> i feel like there's a set-up going on here. this kid isn't stupid. so when the police are there, he could have easily explained. he says call my parents. they know i've been building this. i've been building it for a long time. but he didn't. and the police had no choice. >> the point is that he asked to

well, there's new fallout tonight from a charity event getting national attention. a veteran's group sold tickets for a donald trump speech on a battleship. now, media outlets discovered that the group lost is charitable status months ago. trace? >> reporter: megyn, trump delivered his speech to vsa which claims to have more than a half million supporters. tickets ran between a hundred and a thousand dollars each. the money will go to help veteransment but that's difficult to confirm pause the

group lost its tax exempt status for failing to file tax returns for three years. vsa is appealing that decision, but those tax documents are supposed to be public so that we can find out where the money is going. and, for now, vsa is note giving them up. there is also some question about the legality of the trump speech abord the u.s.s. iowa. trump has given candidates more than $2700, the event itself cost more than 10,000 tlars. joel aaron said his group is being attacked for endorsing donald trump. this is wlaps when a group of conservative veterans takes a stand on an issue. we are proud to make that endorsement. the trump camp is not exactly returning the love. mr. trump was asked to speak as a guest at the veteran's for a stronger america event. and, as an article debit supporter to veterans causes, he agreed to attend. mr. trump and the campaign had

no nojs of any issues associated with the group or their chairman, joel aarons. trurp also claims to have not taken a single penny from that event. >> so, i mean, if this group is not legitimate and they're hosting some sort of a fundraiser to the tune of a thousand bucks a ticket, there's a problem. >> there is a problem. i mean, i've been involved with veteran's nonprofits for a better part of nine years of my career. there's a lot of regulations that go with run ining a 501 (c. these are advocacy organizations on issues, not just endorsing. if you -- you can, but if it's the primary thing of what you're doing, you're going to run into

issues. this is a marriage of convenience. this group needed readvance. donald trump needed a vet's group. and so this was a marriage of veengs. and, i think at this point, the trump campaign probably regrets that. >> as far as truchl is concerned, this is, you know, i'm sure he did not know anything abthe tax filing issues of this group. i mean, one of the things people love about him and one of the things that has been difficult for him is he doesn't have the full campaign apparatus around him. which leaves him exposed at times, like here. so it's not his fault. but is this guy legitimate? do you know this guy? >> i do know him. i worked with him with vets for freedom years ago. permly, i have no issues with him. but a quick google search would have shown and prevented that and laid that out there and

showed that -- as far as members, listen, i run a membership organization. it's hard to build a real grass roots advocacy group. just like it's hard to form a v.a. that, you can find groups out there fighting for reform. 75 paid. we're out there kicking and poking and jabbing. >> he says he's got hundreds of thousands of supporters and he's legit. >> you can claim that because of e-mail lists or whatever. 50,000 on facebook. that fine groups like ours have far more. members are real people who do work for you. >> if these people donated, cnn was reporting it could been up to seven figures. if they donated to charity that is not a charity, what's going to happen to the money? >> well, it's going to sit. it's going to sit there in a holding pattern right now. if they're able to get their stat again, that money can be used. it's not immediately going down a rat hole.
