3:16 am
fix the problems at the v.a.? ceo of veterans for america and fox news contributor pete heg seth joins us now this morning. great to see you this morning. >> good morning. >> friday we saw this report. what was your immediate reaction to this sweeping report? >> well, this is bulletproof evidence. this is an independent but v.a. funded but independent assessment done by the rand corporation with outside consultants. they visited 87 facilities, talked to thousands of employees, looked at all the paperwork and the system and their result was it doesn't work. it fundamentally doesn't work. government-run, single-payer health care not working for veterans. we've been talking about it at concerned vets for america. whistle-blowers have been saying it. the v.a. and others have said everything is fine. this is the silver bullet. this is the indication it is detailed, it is thorough, it looked at every potential option and it said the system needs fundamental overhaul. this should wake everybody up to the fact that what our vets have been getting so far isn't good
3:17 am
enough. but we've got alternatives. >> so who's to blame? >> well, who's to blame? first it's the v.a. bureaucracy that just grows and grows. and the report talks a lot about middle management and bureaucracy growing out of control to the point where there's so many pairiers between the patient and the doctor. then you've got washington, d.c. the politicians that just want to fund it over and over and over again. and then frankly, outside veterans groups that haven't been aggressive about watchdogging it and instead have just been part of the same old, same old in funding the v.a. no matter what. without holding anybody accotae or giving veterans any real choice. >> you have a couple of takeaways from this. you mention one of them already which was fundamental reform. what does that look like? >> fundamental reform -- >> what kind of reform do we need? >> our organization put out a report about a half year ago that said you make this entity, the v.a. to help delivery entities that can operate like a health care facility as opposed to a bureaucracy. i'm here in minnesota. we have the mayo clinic, the cleveland clinic, they work well
3:18 am
because they're medically run as opposed to bureaucratically run. you can create an entity for vha that looks like that. that's not what it looks like now. a couple other things, it validates the need for real choice. real choice. not state choice and a choice card but give the veteran the option, the dollars follow veterans. it changes the entire way vha works. and then the third one is, this is a really important one, v.a.'s been saying for a long time that the care is really good inside. veterans really love the care. well six in ten at least veterans prefer treatment in private care than to the v.a. because they don't get quality customer service, quality care at the v.a. that's a damning assessment for v.a. because they've always said our care is good, it's just hard to get in. turns out it's hard to get in and when you get in there, not always as good as vets think it is. >> what a mess. the separate report also found that 307,000 vets died while waiting for care. >> think about that, clayton. 300,000, 900,000 waiting, 300,000 dead waiting for care. this is government-run health
3:19 am
care and until everybody figures it out, we figured it out, a lot of vets have figured it out because they can't access it. this should be a top presidential campaign issue. we're working with policymakers to make it so. it's time to fix this. we know the problems. talking about it is done. it's time to fix this. and we're going to fight, we're going to fight for it. >> pete hegseth, thanks for staying out in front on this. >> thanks for having me. coming up, one mom frantically calls 911 after getting a chilling text message from her daughter saying someone is trying to break into their home. listen to this. >> he's in the garage with the garage code. no, no, don't move. don't move. don't move baby. hide. oh, my god. please hurry. >> tell you what happens, next. >> and the pope's historic visit is drawing excitement from people of all faiths. up next, we'll explain what's called the francis effect. so,as my personal financial psychic,

is what are those changes and what are going to be lasting changes? or is it just sort of a blip on the vatican's meter? >> what do you think? >> i think you're not going to see this for about another 50 years, because he's actually been able to incorporate vatican two which you probably understand is this big church meeting from 1960s that really they grappled with how to make the church more user friendly. >> so what's the big head line going to be from the first few days of his visit here? >> i think it will be surprising, because one of the things we're going to look at is his speech before congress. that will be the biggest headline because no pope has ever done that before. one of my contacts says he will be an equal opportunity offender. >> offender? >> yes. >> and he's a pope that's actually connecting with young people. >> that's his big focus. he's very much focused on the family. and a lot of people focus on his encyclical on the environment which is a very big issue. if you read the encyclical, you'll see that he's incorporated care for the poor, about the family, about gender, everything is in that
