10:06 am
why aren't we seeing that kind of tough questioning? >> i think john dickerson did press hillary clinton about benghazi. and i think he may have made the calculation that since she apologized and done interviews about the e-mail fiasco that maybe it wasn't going to break much new ground. this is exactly what she wants. the more she takes these questions even if giving the same answers and not addressing the fbi investigation it starts to feel like old news for the audience and maybe that enables her to change the subject to i'm a real person. >> was that a good response when asked to sum up her campaign in three words and she says i'm a real person. if you have to say that isn't that saying something? >> i like the way she laughed when she said it. this is the case of her reading the talking points. she is going to be warmer,

away from the terrible war. >> one thing we heard so much of from the united states intelligence community and european intelligence community is we have watch lists. we know who the foreign fighters are who are going to syria. therefore we can watch them when they come back from syria. what i'm learning from your reporting connecting the dots here is that being on a watch list makes no difference if you can change your identity while you are in syria and get a new passport. >> certainly appears so. $2,000 you can buy a new identity completely. that will give a new photograph and give you an identity card and a driving license. the reason these three are important is because when you arrive in germany to claim asylum production of one document isn't enough. three gives you an ideal cover story to say where you are from, your life before the war started

10:32 am
on friday the house passed a bill with holding government funding for planned parenthood while congress investigates them hoping to appease conservatives. with ten days to go will the house bill be enough to avert a shutdown. joining us are sean noble and garland nixon. i want to start with you. between now and the end of the month how do gop lawmakers separate funding for planned parenthood and keeping the government open? >> it's a difficult question. you have 31 conservatives in the house who have said they want the funding for the government to be tied to planned parenthood. >> cr would be a month long extension. >> not the long term deal. >> the president is not going to sign that. there is no way that the president is going to sign legislation to defund planned parenthood. and so it will -- they will try to force a shutdown.
10:33 am
ultimately republicans will be blamed for that. it looks bad because these issues with planned parenthood are very serious. allegations and videos are horrific. there is a way to go about doing this. shutting down the government is not the way to fix the problem. >> also not good for optics. i can imagine that you maybe wouldn't be so perturbed by a government shutdown? >> there are two hats i'm wearing. my hat as democratic strategist i'm jumping up and down dancing. >> because we saw all of the fingers point to the republicans. >> and particularly during an election year it is difficult for the gop candidates to answer questions they have to answer about an unpopular tactic. and do they defend it and go after the base? it puts us in pretty good position. as american citizens, it's not going to be popular with most people. i'm not going to feel good.

the last one took $24 billion out of the economy. we can't overlook the practical thing, the practical aspects of this. the money, dollars and time. >> you brought up timing. >> from the republican side this does more damage to what they want to try to do to fix the problems of planned parenthood and say we have to make this something that doesn't happen anymore. we can't traffic these fetal tissue parts. if they go through the shut down route then we lost our leverage to fix the problem. >> and leverage being that the republicans are controlling both the senate and the house. and what would that mean for the optics if there is another government shutdown? >> exactly. it puts candidates in a bad place other than ted cruz who is leading the strategy and not thinking about the party. he is doing it for himself.
10:35 am
>> i would be willing to wager that few people say what the last government shutdown was about. they realize there was a shutdown. >> perhaps a different -- perhaps not your party but what would you advise republicans right now? what move should they make? >> they really need to get this done. they have to prove that they can govern. if you want both houses of congress and the white house you have to prove that you can be responsible and practical and not beat on the table and scream and yell when you don't get your way. >> the fact is that most american people have not seen the videos. they don't really understand what the controversy is about. i think congress needs to have a month of hearing and investigate what is going on here so that the people in america can get a better education about what is the situation that they are going for and that way they don't have this problem with the shutdown.
