saying he should correct him? >> it is not the media's role to justify or tell trump what he should or should not say. >> but --. >> again, it was -- they became an opinion voice out in saying, he is a racist, his commend was incorrect, he should have challenged the man. donald trump is going to play his own game and ignore the game. voters are saying go at it you do not need to respond to the media criticism of you. >> but he went silent for 24 hours and he is not ignoring the media, andrea, talk about the media and the war on christians so he is able to diffuse this by blaming the press? >> no. i should say that unlike some journalists i am willing to give donald trump the benefit of the doubt. that being said, he could have easy deflected that moment by
2:05 pm
handling it graciously as john mccain did in 2008 when fielding a similar question. he did not. unlike the other 11 candidates on that main stage, he had a unique responsibility to answer to that question. why? because he spent so much time and effort trying to tell american voters that president obama because not an american. >> when that has come up, he has deflected it but not renounced what he said about raising questions of the birth certificate. i want to play for you, joe trippi what trump said last night, and calling in to three sunday cools, abc, cnn, nbc saying the same thing. take a look. >> the president is going crazy and they all wanted to see me and i said for the first time in my life i got in trouble by not saying anything. am i morale obligated to defend
2:06 pm
the president every time somebody says something bad or controversy about him? i don't think so. >> the express going crazy as trump said. >> this all exposes liberal bias of the press. i'm a liberal, and appalled he did not correct the guy but the fact is we are covering the republican primary. nearly 50 percent of the republican primary voters believe what donald trump is saying, and that who he is playing to the last two years. >> wait, wait, wait a second. >> this is not someone trashing the president and he has no obligation to respond. it is a fact that president obama according to his birth certificate was upon in hawaii in 1916 and he has attended christian church including the one with the raving of wright and you are saying the press is showing liberal bias by not correcting the factual aspect? >> no, no, correcting the fact out but the focus of this is not
2:07 pm
how appalled everyone or the press should be or whether it was right or wrong but how does this impact the republican primary and it cannot hurt him if he is appealing to the 50 percent of republican whose believe this. >> there is expectation with trump he needs to respond in a certain way. for example, trump does not need to defend the president or be the president's spokes p person but it is unfair that trump will cent these statements or challenge the we person being questioned. >> agree the express out of line? >> they are focusing on the wrong thing. where is, where are the other people of the republican party? it is not his responsibility. it should be somebody's responsibility. >> and they could do just that. some republicans. >> that is what they should be reporting. >> i have to defend the press.
2:08 pm
it is our responsibility to follow up as we would with a follow-up question. this is not ethical but a question about accuracy. >> i agree with that but don't have that expectation that donald trump has to respond in a certain way because it is not good enough. >> if there is a tone to it --. >> at the cnn debate there were a lot of questions for donald trump and the other ten candidates and i knew the second this happened this would be the soundbite that would be relayed again and again involving carly fiorina. >> donald trump said the follow and i quote, "look at that face, would anyone vote for that." it is interesting to me donald trump said that he heard mr. bush very clearly and what mr. been said. i think women all over this country heard very clearly what mr. trump said.
2:09 pm
i think she has a beautiful face and she a beautiful woman. >> and i think you have a beautiful face, as well. she was the winner of the debate, no question but as we played, everyone is gushing over carly fiorina, going a little overboard? no, clearly she won the debate. and i think it was fine for the media to make that statement. >> the best bet for the presidency on the basis of one debate. thank you is the one behind that would tip it but the other stories that trick cold out all about, yes, she woman the debate but now she has to worry about campaign structure. >> some people did that but the effect is that carly fiorina -- it helps. >> you agree with rush limbaugh who said that the news media is trying to pick our candidate and
2:10 pm
she is the flavor of the week? carly did a round of morning interviews and was asked, why didn't you smile during the debate? >> thank you is absurd. part of media gushing over carly fiorina has a down side, she is held to a ridiculous double standard. >> a male candidate would not get that question? >> does anyone ask scott walker why they doesn't smile? ben carson didn't smile. no one asked them about that. nobody talks about their wardrobe. scott walker, by the say, said in an interview the media narrative was decided in advance that everyone would say carly fiorina won, in advance. >> the flip side of all of the positive press for carly fiorina, much deserve by the press corps who wrote her off,
2:11 pm
is that trump was hurt by this and he had a bad night and hooked uncomfortable at times and i wonder if, again, joe, the pundits are too quick to write off trump? >> people have lost all perspective on what is happening. if 24 or 22 million people are watching, the donald trump is right. a vast majority of them are tuning in to see him. they are tuning in to see him the you are not -- if 48 million tune in to see him you are not moving the numbers as much as pundit whose sit back and are sure carly fiorina won this thing, and i think she did, but it will not show up in the polls. >> the media have changed the mayorive and it has gone from donald trump mania to carly fiorina mania. >> trump is say he won? >> cnn, several of the news organizations came out saying trump won but these are not
2:12 pm
scientific. he said in the tweets that he won. >> there is a new cnn poll trump 24 percent and carly fiorina at 15 percent. in second place. beckon "meet the press," said he would not advocate a muslim becoming president of the united states. is this going to blow up in the next 24 hours as the media say that is something that no candidate should say because you are talking about a woke group of people? >> it is going to blow up but, again, in the perspective of a republican primary where my guess is this is a huge part of the republican voter pool that believe exactly what carson said. >> it will be interesting to see a poll like that, interesting to say other than 42 percent of republicans. >> and all of donald trump statements blew up and it worked. >> so it is possible that ben carson wanted attention.

2:18 pm
asome of the changes were substandive and a last it was he said he didn't like your face but it is a different style than fox use when the candidates were pressed with detailed questions. they mixed it up but not, he said this about you. >> the fox news debate was like catholic schools, routine, but cnn was like the unstructured schools, how do you feel, let's talk about personalities. it was such a different approach both have benefits. >> the most used word of the night was "jake, jake, jake." it should not have been. >> that races a related question. one entertaining aspect of the debate is the many faces of the trump. they did not use a bell, so,
2:19 pm
tapper had to cut them off and then it was describe, jake and did it seem to be out of control. >> it got out-of-control. but, again, jake tapper did exactly what he said he would do, mix it up, let the candidates have it out. the problem with that were two-fold: to go after each other so hillary clinton and president obama suffered no blows at all during the entire debate because of the way it was structured. in the other, they did not get to economy and the economic issues that i believe voters are interested in because they were not beating up each other on the economy. >> and they did not get very much to mike huckabee and scott walker and marco rubio getting as few as two or three substantive questions and trying to bust in, so, the front runners always get more time. >> if you have not said anything bad about anyone this is no reason to ask you a question.

they are upset with the political and media elite. they have created a huge vacuum for someone to step in and fill the hunger. that is what trump has done, starting with a let down on our part and then it is more complicated. >> it reflects trump's media mastery because he knows how to drive a news cycle and for be interesting and entertaining and insulting enough that when he does give a speech or hold a press conference it is not the typical carefully calculated politician speak which gets the ratings. >> you are hitting on a point that there is symmetry, some commonness in the voter and media. the media and voters love clarity and he gives that. we love covering celebrities and our culture is celebrity-ized. journalists lover what is new, the beginning of the first three leters of new, different,
