denominational and even in different faiths, into religious lines, barriers. if we are who we are meant to be if we're more humane the world will be a better place. >> you're just seeing some things here if you had a moni r monitor. the vice president walked to his front row along with his wife and secretary of state john kerry is there along with mrs. kerry. so they're both lined up in the front row. so the dignitaries are arriving. they'll all be in place when the pope arrives within the next 15 minutes. and he will be receiving the vatican residence up on northwest massachusetts in just a matter of moments. you've been thinking about this residence for awhile.
5:53 am
because english is not his native tongue when he does make his public comments, even though he's been practicing english, are they going to be in italian? spanish? what? >> four of the major speeches will be in english. there are going to be about 20 speeches during his time in the united states. that's a lot of speeches. and his english is not very good. but he has gotten better. and imagine doing that at the age of 76. oh, let's try to learn english. he's really making an effort. there's been a lot of criticism. what political point is he making speaking in spanish? he's trying to communicate. and there will be translators. i don't think it's a political point. he's going to try to speak four of his talks in english. which i think is a fabulous thing. >> absolutely. we're getting a close glimpse right now of vice president joe biden, dr. biden, to his left screen right for us secretary kerry along with his wife speaking with the vatican delegation right there. you almost wonder what they're talking about in this moment.
5:54 am
>> looks like a row of cardinals. and they're not from st. louis. >> yeah. >> they're we heard from peter doocy along the parade route. he said it's unusual for so many people to gather for something nonpolitical and the people along the parade route were really excited. >> you're so right. it is unusual, right? what do we agree on in our country more than, you know, 50% of us. not a whole lot of things when it comes to social issues. and, this pope i think, pope francis has really kerkted with people on a very basic level. be who you're called to be. >> there he is leaving on massachusetts -- it's fully -- >> joe biden was in, and there you can see he's gone over to some of the people who have
5:55 am
gathered. they've all been -- they've all gone through security, and they're saying hello. >> and this most highly anticipated day. >> something they will never forget. >> now to -- >> that didn't take long, did it? before the pope greets the masses in washington, d.c. good morning, everybody. as we wait to see and hear the first official comments on u.s. soil from pope francis, show you a live look from the residence where he is spending the night in washington. and then later, his motorcade will leave in a matter of moments and head toward the white house where the president and first lady are standing by to greet him on the south lawn. and they will kick off an elaborate ceremony. it will be grand. in honor of the president's historic meeting with the pontiff. as we say good morning to you at home, at work, i'm bill hemmer, a special day here today in america's newsroom. how you doing martha? >> good morning, bill.
5:56 am
good to be with you on this really important day. i'm martha maccallum. the crowds you can see them. let's just take a look at it. it is perhaps one of the most spectacular days i've ever seen. the sun is streaming across the white house. you can see the sort of translucent light picked up through the little flags being waved. we hope he had a nice rest yesterday. he had a big trip to cuba and is now here for the united states for the first time in his life. the 78-year-old pontiff has now arrived in the united states, and is getting his first real taste of what it's like to speak to americans on american soil. and get to know and understand this country. so it's going to be a spectacular and really interesting day to watch throughout. >> and jam packed schedule, too. this is just the first moment where you will see just a series of events throughout the day and into the evening hours. so in a moment we imagine he'll get back in the fiat and make his way across town. that was quite a scene yesterday afternoon when he arrived a andrews air force base, and
5:57 am
quickly climbed into a four door fiat. and then drove away flanked and shrouded by the massive suvs that were around to protect him. >> as i heard father jonathan say earlier, motorcade is designed by nature of a motorcade to sort of make it impossible to tell who is in what car but it wasn't that hard. the way that the pope was riding that little fiat yesterday. this is a challenge that this pope has presented to his special secret service detail, and the swiss guards who cover him. because he is always right in there with the people. and all of these people who are taking this moment to touch his hands, to touch his vestment. that's a moment that they will mefr forget for the rest of their lives and he understands that. and he seizes these moments to get out into the crowds and see the people. >> we will watch his actions and certainly listen to his words. some people call it pope code. what will he say? what will he intimate with his words? how distinct and dedescriptive
5:58 am
will he be? you could say his trip in cuba he was not that. but his actions in meeting with fidel castro and not cuban dissidents sent a message to many who interpreted that as a sign when he was on the communist island nation. that well perhaps 40 minutes meeting with fidel castro a nod of appreciation for the years that he has served there. but what does he say here? and how deep does he go? pope code. on watch. now. shepard smith live at the basilica national shrine at the immaculate conception a few miles away from the white house. set the stage from there. >> bill, good morning to you. good morning to both of you. and i was listening to marsha just a minute ago talk about what a spectacular day it is. i hate it when people on tv talk about what a great day it is. since this is the best day i have ever experienced in washington, d.c. ever. whole life. it's 64 degrees. there's not one cloud anywhere as far as you request see.
5:59 am
there -- it's bright, bright blue. there's a 5-mile-per-hour wind. and it's not humid. it's like a fall day in the carolinas, with the winds coming over the mountains. i've never experienced this before. we're supposed to get up into the 70s. so i think god is smiling on washington today as the pope makes his way here. and we're expecting this kind of weather all day long into the 70s. so the bottom line is, when they cram tens of thousands of people next to each other to get near the holy father, they're not going to be sweating too badly. and that's a bit of a gift in and of itself. the pope will meet the president in just a minute. we're hear ruffles and flourishes and it will be an enormous ceremony before we hear the pope's message for all of us. we sort of know what that message is going to be. he's going to say we need to take care of people who need help. we need to house refugees from around the world. we need to take care of this earth that god gave us. and we need to be good to our fellow man. the question is, how much of what exactly will be stressed.
6:00 am
and the wild card seems to be, will he get on the richest nation in the world, will he most likely tell us all, look we've got 4 million plus refugees coming out of a war-torn and terrorist ravaged area. and you the richest nation in the world you've got to do better. a
