delivering blessings in america saying god bless america. we are watching as the pope prepares to leave the white house, scheduled to wrap up the meeting with president obama any moment, and the cope will canonize a spanish frier who brought the church to california. >> reporter: the people you see behind me in downtown washington, d.c. on the front of the fence line sprinted to get those spots at 4:00 in the morning when the metal detectors they had been waiting to open finally let them in. you look at the crowd now, there are people packed in. deep in some places just to try to catch a look at the pope. there have been pockets of

cheering and chanting. and the only time there was complete quite was while the pope's speech on the south lawn was piped in through a loud speaker. everybody in the crowd has their eyes open for the pope who should be here in a few. the officers you can see, every ten feet or so, have their eyes on the crowd. there are bomb-sniffing dogs and helicopters overhead and police out of site to fortify the short route that is going around the white house, down 17th, and across constitution avenue and he will turn at 15th and constitution and head up there toward the treasury department. it so rare to have a crowd this big and this excited in washington, d.c. for something that is not political. but i can tell you from talking to people here and being here,

and his speech was devoted to world pollution and the sinfulness of pollution. he quoted martin luther king saying we have failed to honor our promsary note to future generations and it is time to honor that note now and talking about the sin of global warming >> that is one of the themes we expect to hear from him over the next several days and something he talked about before arriving to the united states. what was it like personally to meet him? >> it was just a wonderful experience being near him. my middle name is francis and he was the patron saint of our family. this is the first pope who took that name and it is significant because saint francis broke with the church, broke with the

fixation on orthdox and said all of us need god and particulary support the poor. the pope has taken the focus away from the orthodox and the narrow concern with personal morality and opened it up saying the church and all of humanity has to be concerned with the larger issues and war and peace and poverty and the inequities and that is what we need to focus on today. >> what is the impact of him being here in the united states do you think? >> people who care about the future generations in my community in particular want to see this issue of global climate change framed as he has been framing it as a moral issue, an issue of sin, in a contexted --

context of our obligations. >> i am curious what you think, because there are critics, and why working to make sure the shots are clear there on the screen, the critics say the pope is speaking for the church. and the pope shouldn't be someone who influences policy. what are your thoughts on that? >> i think everybody -- we live in a nation where everybody is entitled to speak and he speaks for 70 million catholics and he speaks on moral issues. he is not telling us who we need to vote for, he is not telling us there should be religious paths for people who run for office, but he is telling us the difference between right and wrong and we have a special

obligation to the rest of the world to treat people fairly, model behaviors that are moral behaviors. he has been critisized for his criticism against capitalism but he is saying capitalism and all economic systems should be governed by rules that make it force the economy to serve humanity so you can make money but you must make it by doing good things. you cannot make it by doing bad thing for the rest of of us. >> what is going to be remarkable is we will hear him speak in his own words in front of congress and the unm -- un and the american people will hear him. any final thoughts?

barrier between himself and the people. that is his calling. that is what he is supposed to do. he has to be with the people. he is the representative of the church. and wants to spread the love and that is why he is in the pope mobile and walks around and holds and kisses baby despite the secret services gnawing on their fingernails. he is going to st matthew's cathedral, the mother church of the archdiocese in washington. it was scheduled for 11:30 but they are behind schedule because of the meeting and greeting, which is how the pope wants it. there is a private mid day prayer with the catholic bishops not open to the public playing with the bishops and over the afternoon the mass happens behind me at 4:15, canonization mass, something hat never happened in the united states.
