9:00 am
>> more news ahead in the second hour. we will see you then. >> have a great day, "outnumbered" starts now. pope francis in america participating in a prayer service with all u.s. catholic bishops at st matthew's cathedral. it is part of a whirl wind schedule of events during his first ever visit to the united states. a hystistohistoric crip trip ma trip -- trip marked by palms and prayers. i am harris faulkner, and andrea tantaros is here and bill hemmer is our one lucky guy. kicking it off this morning. you are outnumbered but thanks for the blessing.
9:01 am
>> you are also our one lucky catholic. >> and you? >> prode -- prodstant. >> the pope's first visit to america and greeting america during a visit to the white house, welcomed by the president on the south lawn. he spoke english to weigh in on climate change, cuba, marriage, and immigration. pope francis setting the tone in his first words. >> as the son of an immigrant family, i am happy to be a guest in this country, which was built
9:02 am
by immigrants. [applause] >> our own doug mcelway is live at st matthew's cathedral where the prayer service began. >> reporter: the doors are shut now and this is a solumn ceremony. the pope arrived in a motorcade but contained in a tiny fiat making a statement when you see the secret services behind him. a message of modesty and perhaps a message of advertising for the fiat company. this is a historic church dedicated in 1840, it is the
9:03 am
fourth largest church in the washington, d.c.-area. it is the mother church of the washington diocese and the place where the funeral mass for president john kennedy was held in 1964. as the prayer service gets underway in latin i should add don't be fooled by the peace and quite because 500 yards to the right and left there are thousands of people struggling to catch a glimpse at the pope. there is a little protest. we saw buses moving in front of protesters calling for women to be ordained in the church and the human rights campaign fund is out there and a huge banner was unrolled this week that read we are your children, your teachers, your faithful welcomed
9:04 am
by god, dismissed by our bishops, pope francis, will you welcome us home? it sends a powerful message if it is still there. it is a symbolic message of the problems the catholic churches are facing. >> doug, thank you. the pope is visiting our nation at a time when some americans say they feel religious freedom is under attack. the faithful are facing challen challenges with contraception and same-sex marriage and churches are forced to follow out procedures that contradict what they believe. it was said in the new york times, the high courts ruling hasn't result in lawsuits of
9:05 am
churches refusing to perform such meetings, but there lawsuits against bakeries refusing to make cakes and florist refusing to provide flowers. the pope issued a point of appeal to protect religious freedom saying all are called to protect the anything that would threaten the freedom. it was interesting to see if the pope would weigh in on the issue. there is politics revolving around this visit. what are your thoughts >> i think we will debate the polit politics for a long time. but look at the faces of the people turning out for the parade in washington, d.c. they were happy and could barely stay in their shoes. a lot were in line at 4:00.
9:06 am
some were there late last night trying to get through security. i think that was a spectacular, wonderful moment for america and for the world. and we can debate all of the politics as we go forward. the point you made about religious liberty, i am curious to find out where we on this visit some sunday night. >> interesting. >> sunday night is philadelphia, the final mass at the world meeting of families and he talked about marriage in the first address about at the white house and he said the world meeting of families is the reason he is making the trip. >> the other thing happening in the context of politics, if you will will, andrea, this meeting before congress when coming to new york on friday and what what the will happen out of that and whether this type of issues comes up there. >> this pope hasn't been afraid to weigh in on other issues, not
9:07 am
just religion, and he is controversy. most catholics love this pope saying he is in touch and non-judgmental and others, and i talked to a catholic friend, who said he does seem to be wading into the a more secular and less spiritual agenda when he talks about things like climate change and other areas and both political parties seem to be making him a part of their message. left is doing this, the right is doing this, but you should not be surprised the pope is weighing on political and religious issues. poverty and greed is his domain but other areas, some folks, mostly political, are saying i don't know about this, maybe this is not something he should be weighing in on. >> i want to talk for a moment. we are having the pictures up live as they are happening inside st matthew's cathedral. you will hear the sounds of what
9:08 am
happen take place right now. so we do just want to pause out of respect. and i know that you grew up with this faith, sandra i am curious to know on a day so important, what your thoughts are? >> this is going to have lasting impact on many people. not just the american people he is here to see today but around the world people are watching. an important word being used today is he said he is coming to listen and share in the hopes and dreams of the american people. this is what is on the mind of the american people: climate change and religious freedom. he is here not to just talk about it but listen to what the dialogue is in the united states. he is looking for these days of encounter and dialogue. i think we just have to go back to that.
9:09 am
>> father jonathan morris earlier on the coverage was talking about the encountering of things where you can come together. we saw the president doing that this morning and the pope. they were not talking around each other but togging to the middle. >> i cannot remember the last time i turned up the volume to listen to a politician or anyone you see on television and yet i am not even catholic. i stopped what i was doing, getting ready for the show and truly listened to what he was saying and not because i was going to talk about it about because i was truly fascinated by what he was saying and i don't think you have someone respond that way to someone too often. you listen to his speech and he had something for everybody. talked about religious freedom, talked about being the son of immigrants and how this country
9:10 am
welcomes immigrants, and climate change. i think that is what makes this pope unique is he has the moral authority to have both sides listen to what he says carefully. >> this isn't the first meeting for president obama and pope francis. they met last march, 2014, when president obama went to the vatican. so from one's house to other's house if you will. the fiat is becoming prominent here. it is about accessibility. he passed a lot of members of clergy and that is how you reach the younger generations?
9:11 am
>> that is why he went to cuba first. the catholic church has been decimated in that communist nation. this trip was launched after the president went to the vatican last year. it seems on many issues they are in lock step. the pope did an interview nine days ago and talked about all of this without being promped by the interviewer. they are his beliefs and poinhi opinions. >> okay. we are going to continue our coverage but want to let you know what you are looking at if you are just tuning in. this is st matthew's cathedral in washington, d.c., a gathering of select group of american bishops there playing with pope francis. we will continue with "outnumbered." stay close.

9:16 am
>> beautiful sounds there of what is happening inside st matthew's cathedral as the pope francis is leading the service. this is the seat of the archdiocese in washington and the first mass in 1895 and the church is home to several high profile funerals. the pope is leading the prayer and speaking with remarks mostly in spanish and as this continues to make news we will bring it to you. beautiful songs. more potentially bad news for hillary clinton as work and personal related e-mails have been recovered that the team deleted. this is just the latest in the information into the probe of
9:17 am
clinton mishandling private information while as secretary of the state. there also appears to be a discrepancy between the state department and clinton's account over what initially prompted the agency's request for her records. clinton maintained her decision to ton over the e-mails was part of a routine record request. but the state department claims it was sparked by the revelation clinton was using a private system. ms. clinton has contradicted herself so much on this sever issue. i am not buying she was compelled to turn it over. >> perhaps not. but i don't know if it matters. if there was a caucus in iowa today, she wins. >> does she? >> yeah, look at the latest polling.
9:18 am
she is on top of bernie sanders in some of the iowa. honesty and trustworthy, absolutely. do people care? or did they say she is the one? >> one thing i would say about what you are looking at? slip it a little bit and look at where bernie sanders is. it almost looks like joe biden is doing more harm to bernie sanders than hillary clinton. >> biden was at 17% in that poll. >> and he is not even in the race yet. >> this is poplar until you get in the race. i think you make a good point. some of the scandal stuff with hillary clinton over the 30 years and her numbers on creditability are dropping. i have not understood and other democrats haven't on why they continue to do what what they are doing.
9:19 am
>> they have huge problems. i am not sure if she has the selection. >> i am saying among democratic primary voters, to some extent, this is all baked in. you know what you are getting with the clinton's. >> it was a contrast seeing general petraeus apologize on camera for sharing classified information with his mistress. >> that was done on purpose. she would argue, whether you buy it or not, she didn't share the classified information with anybody. the fact of the case with him is he did turn over classified information. >> depends on the definition of the word marked. >> and the penalties petraeus got, criminal investigation, $100,000 in fines, probation. >> if hillary clinton gets anything less than that looks like special treatment.
9:20 am
>> but that is going back to bill and julie's point, if you are for hillary clinton and support hillary clinton, is there much that can happen on the e-mail scandal that can change your mind at this point if you are still with her? could her favorability droppings drop? yes. but will that change the outcome? >> if she is not win, people with deep pockets are not going to give money to a candidate they think is vulnerable. >> this is what happened yesterday. two top unions saying they are delaying their endorsement of hillary clinton. the reason you think might have to do with the e-mail scandal but they want to see what happens with joe biden. >> joe biden told them in 2008, stood in front of them and said we owe you in philadelphia. >> maybe he is running but i don't think he is.
9:21 am
i felt that way for months and haven't changed my position. i don't sense it. if you go to iowa and see the way this things work, you have to be there. you have to be there. >> it is an animal. >> you have to be in the living and the churches and gather support and at some point it is too late. >> you think she learned how to do it better than last time in >> i was hoping that was the case but i have not seen any indication she has. i want her to win. but i don't think she has. even the whole treatment of the scandal, why not come out, saying i screwed up, i am going to cooperate and let's move on. first laughing it off, then taking responsibility, laughing it off again, taking responsibility -- there is no
9:22 am
direction from her to her supporters as to how to address this. that is problematic because you have surrogates going out there on her behalf trying to defend her. >> you think he is trying to stop the bleeding a little bit? >> i have a great idea. let's drive to iowa. >> in a van? >> bring the snacks. >> you mentioned being on the ground in iowa, from your experience, what really works with voters on the ground? >> you have to show up. you really have to show up.
9:23 am
that is how you refine the message? this only happens when you stand up to the people taking the eight or nine town hall meetings and answer over and over again. >> scott has said that. >> i wonder if biden gets a pass because people know why he is not there. he is sad from his son. they are saying he needs time his son just died. i don't know the answer to that. but i wonder if he gets in and people say the public life -- whether people say just because
9:24 am
we are upset about him not coming to town halls but he's got a good excuse. >> the answer he gave on public television was sincere and he needs to find if he can pour his heart and energy into this and i question if this is something like that he decided. could he still be undecided about running for president? >> he knows. i don't know if he knows. let's put aside joe biden and look at mourning father joe biden. he has a decision he makes and something changes and he goes back and forth. >> julie, beer is the world over your right shoulder. how did you make that happen? >> it has to be five o'clock somewhere.
9:25 am
9:26 am
9:29 am
>> we are taking a journey together following pope francis's historic journey and the pontiff is holding a prayer service with american bishops in washington d.c. part of his schedule of events across three american cities in coming days. giffords smith live at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception, largest catholic church in a nation where pope francis will celebrate his first mass in america with a controversial canonization, the first american soil. >> controversial. i don't know of the controversy.
9:30 am
>> it is probably political. >> not so much. native americans have been protesting because -- >> that part of it. >> protesting because sera issue is due for canonization, the first latin american to be recognized as the st. there is exception to this, they feel like in his journey through california and bring in a catholic faith to calif. he force native americans, indigenous people into that faith in a violent way. there are a lot of facts that would say otherwise, disagreement on how that would work. one thing is for short, he formed nine missions across the journey in bringing the faith to california but that is why
9:31 am
people are protesting. >> we don't know, we were not there but some people are saying they went along with it and some say they forced him to it but both of them might be right. as a non catholic is interesting to me that you can and nice, make a pope, make a saint of someone who died quite a few years ago. what a day it has been starting this morning and just before the parade today the president and the pope at the white house and the chamber of commerce, down to the temperature and perfection of a life wind and beautiful crowd, it couldn't be more americana and the white house and the president welcoming the pope as only a head of state can. listen. >> i believe the excitement around your visit, holy father, must be attributed not only to
9:32 am
your role as pope but to your unique qualities as a person. >> the moral foundation of it throughout the day is help others, be good to the planet, if people need help give it to them, feed the hungry, shelter those who don't have homes, take care of the environment. and the whole trip is sort of umbrellaed with love and the pope says he is here to enjoy getting to know americans and he thinks the president. >> mr. president, once again i thank you for your welcome. i look forward to these days in your country. god bless america.
9:33 am
>> source of a third language forum, english is. he is not fluent and the suggestion that he practiced law, you don't need to practice for this. is said to be the pope's favorite thing, you saw the kissing of the baby and this extraordinary scene, this is the sort of routes the president would take after the inauguration in washington. i watched personally time after time and this is the way it goes, to wrap up in an up armored cadillac, pressured like an airplane and they are protected everywhere and he is riding around in a modified gee, is a pain for the secret service but it is how the pope wants to roll any is expected to meet many thousands in new york and philadelphia. >> one thing that caught my eye earlier, how this pope and other members of clergy across the
9:34 am
globe are tasked with speaking to the young regeneration and you saw him at one of these events outside the white house and there were children who were gathered, who wanted to take selfys with the pope. >> funny you mention that because my right hand woman patricia barkley and i were in the media filing center at the college campus and there's us line we will show you that at the bottom says take a selfy with the pope. there we stood, and a selfy with low pope, he is reaching out to young people in every way, trying to do things they want done, 50% of young americans who are catholic speak spanish so a lot of speaking spanish, he is trying to reach out to young people, everyone is paying attention and the pope does. >> amazing to hear your
9:35 am
response, he is taking on things like climate change. what is the response you are seeing on the ground, hit the ground running and taking on these difficult subject? >> i am nothing but the media around, very jaded cynical bunch, listen and write things down and decide from reporting it to you don't pay much attention but in the abstract, how can they be controversial? take care of the planet, house the homeless, feed people who need it, take care of the less fortunate, make people more equal the way jesus said we should all be, hasn't gone into the areas where he differs with president obama, he didn't talk about abortion or a number of things on the president's agenda that are not on his. looking for common ground where something we can all do.
9:36 am
>> move away on a little from the politics with our coverage this morning with you, there are two things i noticed. he seems a little slow in the white house and i don't know if there is something that explains that but i noticed immediately during that parade when he was driving in an open-air car he was invigorated by the people. the other thing i noticed at 9:00, a tight schedule, to get to anywhere, to get to the white house, what we are looking at, images in an open air car where there are thousands and thousands of people on the side of the road, what in the world, what kind of security nightmare could this be, from washington or potential in new york city or philadelphia. >> if i am with the secret service, i am showing my
9:37 am
fingernails off because there's nothing you can do. he is not worried about himself and mentioned earlier, he spoke to a newspaper in barcelona and said i don't have much to lose. we all have a lot to lose if anything bad happens the secret service has to let him go, they can tell president obama you can't go to that coffeeshops, we can't protect you but they can't tell the pope that. i have been told pope is not a strategy that that is what we have, hope and a prayer, he said god is handling this and it will be just fine, so we have to trust in the po price of those. >> we look forward to seeing you later today and through the day, shepard smith reporting 3:00 p.m. eastern, thank you so very much. we will continue our coverage on the pope as things happen and continue to watch st. matthew's cathedral and what happens with the prayer that is going on with u.s. bishops and do more news, the president one detainee

he has a nephew of gitmo who was released and went back to saudi arabia. he had a panel it was set up by the white house to review these pieces and his case came up for review and was denied until this panel got involved and said it is okay, we know his family, tweet trust his nephew went back, will do the same. based upon that ground he was released. >> do we have access to these journalists? >> heritage would know. >> as a dumping the most dangerous ones first, that is what they did with the trade. >> how would be the test be different from this panel? >> don't know the taliban five are very controversial. >> very high level, the most dangerous, how could the panel
9:45 am
review the documents? they say he still sympathizes with jihad. what will they do? send him to a holiday in in saudi arabia? paging all terrorists to ballroom at home during a seminar they will change their ways? >> something we should have done in the beginning is tried them, really tried them and send from here, not guantanamo bay but send them here to presents where they could never get out. it happened in colorado and other places -- >> your party didn't want it. >> democrats in my party, remember we wanted to try, the shake mohammad in new york where the crime took place and everybody on the republican side went nuts. it is under the bridge but the problem is these people tried them and send them, a support releasing him, one of the things that will happen in saudi arabia, either he will be free to do what you wants to do, or

the saudis -- >> two numbers to keep your eye on, 16 months left in the term, 114, will he get there? will get close? >> to speak quickly to the issue, and there was a lot city in illinois that did not want these prisons and got one just to make sure the detainees never came there, specified funding for that. where would we put them? can't the but the current prisons. >> there are not that many. the argument was not in my backyard from politicians because they heard that from their constituents but to billups point they tried to amend federal court and quite honestly we have done a good job prosecuting them in federal court. republicans got the issue wrong. and put them away. >> we don't have the right solution, let's not do something for the sake of doing something
9:47 am
and send to saudi arabia for a rehabilitation program which i am sorry looks like a and yelling at you but almost looks to me like you are saying this was the best of their options. >> nobody will keep it -- >> the best of the option continues to be tried them here and send them to prison in the united states, shut down guantanamo, not what the president -- hope that they -- >> the president -- i am telling you about the issue. >> after months of pounding on the issue hillary clinton has come out finally against keystone pipeline but is this really how she feels or is she pandering to the left in the face of failing numbers? why do so many people choose aleve?

>> hillary clinton has come up against the keystone pipeline after months of pending done for issue. she is opposed to building the controversial plan that would carry oil from canada to refineries on the gulf coast. made the announcement in iowa sighting climate change as an important factor. >> i think it is imperative the we look at the keystone pipeline
9:52 am
as what i believe it is, a distraction from the important work we have to do to combat climate change and unfortunately from my perspective once interferes with our ability to move, who therefore i oppose it. >> critics accusing clinton of paying politics, bernie sanders continues to rise in the polls. yesterday's announcement is five years after clinton was in favor of the project. >> we have not yet signed off on it, we are inclined to do so and for several reasons going back to one of your original questions, either going to be dependent on dirty oil from the gulf war dependent under the oil from canada. >> this is getting interesting. republican presidential candidate mike huckabee reporting hillary clinton's and

opposition makes clear she is running scared from bernie sanders. is this a change of heart or politics? >> yesterday afternoon -- this is not a repeat story. where we spend a lot of time and i'm waiting for the false plane to land. sure enough that line comes across, lightning bolt says this fellow is released back to saudi arabia. i check my twitter feed and in that instant hillary clinton announces her support for a keystone. i know you believe, did it yesterday because she had covered today from the pope. >> yes, you heard me say that on your show two hours ago, quick question but good answer. >> erica payne put out of the they informed people that the issue could come up. >> no question, i will repeat again as i said earlier, she
9:54 am
said she is doing this because she knew the pope would give her coverage and he did. any politician -- not only -- he comes out, climate changes issue deal in the democratic party, accused priority for democrats especially competing with bernie sanders for their votes, normally does she make this a constant check that for the plane to land, she knew, waiting for a long time. also she must have suspected the pope was going to make it an issue. >> there are a lot of other factors. they talk about this every day, oil is under $50 a barrel, there's not a lot of pressure politically for her to approve something like this, mike huckabee is right about bernie sanders making pressure and big

environmental money. and wants to the gop to talk about love pipeline. the gop -- >> maybe all of this is correct. >> she called for the report to look at the environmental hazard the maybe the keystone pipeline. it didn't pan out. what is the result? >> i am not disagreeing with you. i'm suggesting it was going from one country to another as secretary of state. >> to say the pipeline isn't to climate change is ludicrous. >> this gets the subject changed for her. we are just a bit away from october 22nd, testifying on benghazi, it is all of those things and you don't want to take somebody at face value, but there are too many boxes. >> there are so many.
