organizers expect 1 million people. that will begin this hour. a good afternoon, 3:00 in philadelphia. it's noon on the west coast. i'm bill hemmer. this has been a terrific weekend here, really, a lot of fun as we await to see pope francis getting ready for the festival of families here. his final and his largest event of this trip here in the u.s. the holy father winding up his whirlwind visit in grand style. as you know, because we have said it time and time again, he has not stopped. the schedule has been massive. now, he celebrate as massive ceremony here along the benjamin parkway. the final stop. i want to bring in my colleagues

here in philadelphia, as we have been sitting here and watching all the events the past couple of days. good afternoon to the two of you. >> good afternoon. >> so we last left here late last night, went back to the hotel and the pope was still talking. i was in bed this morning and i turned on the tv and he was already wrapping up his first sermon of the day to a group of bishops around the world. >> the energy of this 78-year-old man, spoke to the festival of families last night and cracked jokes about problems inherent in the family, about mother-in-laws and plates being thrown. almost as funny as jim gafigan who spoke here last night and talked to prisoners in philadelphia and talked about how he shares their suffering and understands what they've gone through and need to do to rehabilitate themselves going forward and meeting with the

jewish family in philadelphia today. and we drove through today. we walked last night maybe ran because i followed bill hemmer and tough to keep up with for 2 miles. i'm a little old and heavy to keep up. today, we see driving through on the buses, maybe a million people, maybe a million and a half, maybe more people than are in san diego or dallas here today, and they've come around the world to see this vick car of christ. incredible. >> it really is incredible. one thing that we've seen in d.c. and new york and done ma masses there as well. this is the mass that was the focal point, has to do with the families, very much a focus of this pope. this is why he did not do a huge mass in new york or washington, d.c. because he wanted to save the one big huge one for philadelphia. he certainly has. there are about a million plus people here. not only that the mass is so

important to him. he wrote about the mass in his encyclical on the environment. this is very very important to him. >> he also had a funny line last night when he said, i've been a priest all my life and who am i to talk about marriage and everybody laughed. he said i won't even get into the mother-in-laws and they laughed at that as well. it was entirely off script. there was a speech prepared that he disregarded for whatever reason. i think, peter, you touched on it many times, he's a pastor at heart. that's what he was doing at that moment. laura ingalls has been speaking to so many pilgrims, too. laura, i am told as of two hours ago, the lines for clearing security were almost insuff insufferable for a lot of people. they've been waiting hours pon hours and thousands upon thousands trying to get inside. it's secret service event. they blocked off five square

miles in philadelphia, major american city. you don't see a cab anywhere on the street. if you want to get anywhere you have to walk. this is the decision they made. hopefully they can find their way inside. what have you heard so far? >> reporter: we've been talking to people all day long. i can hear people in back of me. an amazing experience and the energy has begun and grown all day long. we talked to people who traveled as far as kenya and people came from europe and south america to be here for this moment, for this weekend for this pope. many people we spoke to in this crowd da said it has taken us a lot to return to the church and some people stepped away from god and wanting to be part of this religion saying it is this pope that brought us back. we booked our tickets and wanted to be here to hear him speak. he has brought such joy and

continues to bring his message of hope. look behind me. last night we shed you these images of the festival of families. a different environment, electrical guitar and drums. we see the philadelphia orchestra lining up, choir getting ready and pilgrims taking their seats and people saying they are energized and hopeful and thankful to be here. >> just the number of people here and all over the world. rear from indiana. we don't get out much. this has been a truly humbling experience. >> butterflies. just a joy. you wish i would stay forever. everybody is happy and nice to each other and joyful and hopeful that not just the event change some people not just for today or tomorrow but with us. >> here is a live look at the parkway, a sea of people who

waited hours to be screened by security. there are 40 jumbotrons to help people see him. today, the pope takes everyone to church. as we wait for his arrival, you can feel the energy building and i have heard song breaking out behind me and we have heard that all along the parkway. >> thank you. we will check with you as well. we're told the pope is about 20 minutes away and that will be the next time we see him and he will get on board the popemobile what we think will be a short parade. last night, it was an entire lap and, heck, we got to see it and really it is a thrill. when you hear the roar of that crowd on both sides of the parkway, almost like this human wave of applause and cheering and flash bulbs go off and everybody has a camera in their hand and that this is moment they choose to capture it and moment they choose and a moment they will never forget.

we will see him in a couple minutes there. show me the area one more time and give the viewers at home a bit more perspective what's happening. benjamin franklin parkway, models after paris. you can see the iconic building in philadelphia. everybody knows it. you can see the white tent, that's where the main stage is and where the altar has been transformed as of today and that's our location as well. the masses of humanity that that point. >> i was talking to a priest on the bus this morning and has several parishioners in that crowd and cut o that middle section at 11:00 this morning, five hours before the mass because it was already full. those jumbotrons are so wonderful and give people wonderful perspective what's going on, on the altar and plus

does make them feel like they're part of the mass and the experience. >> we saw that last night being part of it and not being left behind, bill, as we literally walked through thousands of people back to our hotel. this runs from city hall to the museum of art. we saw entire families, families wielding older parents, younger disabled children speaking, i heard seven or eight different langua languages, all kinds of food, people bringing food and buying food and people buyi ining relis articles and people showing their new pope dolls as a matter of pride, not making fun of the catholic church we have seen in this past at some events. it was glorious event that displayed and captured the very best of american family here last night and again today. >>sy will cue up a piece of

video from yesterday afternoon. maybe some folks have seen it. i will bet some folks have not seen it. >> it's the best. >> this is the madden family. the minute you see it, infant daughter, her name is quinn. they had a unique strategy to address his holiness when the came through earlier saturday afternoon. their idea was to dress their daughter precisely as pope francis. and he came around the corner and he stopped and he was filled with laughter and he said, bring her on over here. >> the best part of it is his reaction of just laughing, the biggest laugh we've seen. >> when they took the daughter away, he said, make sure you tell that family, they have a great sense of humor. >> he loves children. >> i have never seen anything like that in my life. that is a tremendous tremendous moment. glad you picked that out. >> how to meet the pope? dress your child as a little

pope. there you go. >> it's his respect for child n children. >> it's what the father talked about, too, he wants the children to come forward because it's the sign children are important. children are really the future, he wants the people to see the babies and children sometimes neglected and sometimes they don't get the voice and he wants to show he is paying attention. >> the more serious note he visited with victims of sexual abuse this morning and made it clear to them that those who commit those crimes will be held accountable by this church and this pontiff. he said god weeps for the sexual abuse of children and said "i'm profoundly sorry." >> and there he is, he has arrived on the grounds here, about a mile stretch up and down the parkway, maybe a little more, depending what part of the parkway you're on. this will be what will be the pent ultimate ride in the

popemobile on his visit on united states soil. father joist with us in new york and the founder of the magazine as well. good afternoon. what do you expect from him in terms of a homily and final message? >> it seems whenever he's with normal people and this is going to be a lot of normal people, he puts his script down, in other words, he's not speaking to congress, he's not speaking to the u.n., when he's not speaking to a group of u.s. bishops, he decides to put his script down. as you mentioned, bill, yesterday, he didn't use a script at all. my guess is when he looks out at the people, he's going to mostly put the script down and be giving a summary of what's on his heart over these last six days of visiting the united states of america. >> we can just see him off to our right, as he comes into the parkway now, and this -- really,

captures some of the greatest images of this trip when you see the expressions on the face of the pilgrims who waited -- they've been here for hours if not days awaiting their moment to capture a memory. >> there he is. >> and grab a touch of the grace that he has brought to so many over the past 5 1/2 days. robert money ham, what's your expectation today on the final day? >> i think he's bringing together a tremendously well organized and well executed trip to america. it has, as its goal, a kind of re-branding of the catholic church. it's upset some of the more conservative catholics he has been so emphasizing social issues, environment et cetera. but the church was facing a kind of danger of the amish solution

of becoming irle ining irreleva pope has put it right back in the center and fox and the other channels covering im day-by-day. we have a million and half people. i would say it is a mass and mass is a moment of tran sen -- transcend dance and moment of reflection to god. we have these contradictions, pope coming to america and secular society and winning over that society. i think this mass is the cu combination of that. >> thank you, robert. similar scene like this when he packed a million people in along the same stretch of road here in philadelphia. [ cheers and applause ] >> it's a magical moment. look at the phones. you look at the flowers. you see the expressions on behalf of the people. >> this is very similar to what was going on last night.

it was in darkness last night. the crowds, i swear, must be twice as many as last night. this is the ultimate moment for his visit to america. i have to say that just being in the crowd, you almost are brought to tears just witnessing it. >> nains who's telling us there is a merciful father. he is kind of that human representation today. i think he's talking about li lifting all of us up indignity, especially the children. >> the philadelphia orchestra is in place behind us and the choir has been assembled as well as from churches across this great american city. wait until you hear the sounds of the orchestra and the voices, the singing voices here, they will blow you away. as we get ready now about 30 minutes way from a mass for 1 million plus in a city filled with brotherly love.

back here live in philadelphia. a moment ago we saw what looked like something that was not expected to happen, frankly, when you saw some of the pilg m pilgrims emerge from the side of the street and approach the popemobile and you saw the secret service behind get out of their suvs and make a move. >> there was a massive coordinated and swift, really spontaneous move. >> what's hard for us to figure out is whether this was planned or not. it looked like the holy father got out to visit a part of the route that is filled with prayers that are written on white strips of paper. >> exactly. one of our producers is talking about he had seen this, called the knotted grotto. he apparently noticed this and stopped there to greet them. we're not quite sure whether they went out to the pope or he saw them and went to them and the security people perhaps

didn't know which one was which. >> we are rolling again toward mass that will get under way in the next 30 minutes. it will be celebrated in english, latin and spanish. the homily, the main address from his holiness today will be delivered in spanish. now, the choirs, the voices of philadelphia are starting to rise in the afternoon air behind us. ♪ ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> earlier today he addressed a group of bishops where he's spending the night and earlier he went to prison where it is hand-to-hand combat, personal communication where you're delivering a message from the heart for someone and telling them, seek forgiveness and turn

your heart around because we're waiting for you and will be waiting for you on the other side. >> more than just forgiveness, he's talking to hardened criminals, killers, rapisrapistd offering them redemption. so many times society has thrown these people away and want to lock up the key. he's saying, no, each soul and person can be redeemed. that's why it is so important to the pope. >> he talked about liberty to capti captives. what he did today was the best presentation of the merciful church. i was standing in the hotel this morning and a woman told me she wasn't a catholic, wasn't a christian said, i can't believe he's visiting with prisoners here in philadelphia. what a wonderful wonderful opportunity to spread some joy. i said, well, he did last holy thursday in rome, visiting prisoners there, and he washed their feet, bill hemmer. >> he's getting closer.

you can hear the crowd around him, as it ripples across the parkway. >> almost too exciting for us. we know he's out there and can see the crowd getting excited and screaming and know he's within feet of us yet we can't touch him. >> no. we saw that last night. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪

>> i'm not one for reading fa faces, but i would venture to guess he has been happier here than we saw in new york and in washington and in cuba before that. >> i would agree with you. i think there's a look of serenity on his face, not only excitement when he sees babies and other folks that reach out to him but a feeling of absolute serenity and calm and joy. it goes back to him being a pastor, a parish priest. there's no higher calling than for a pastor to say the mass. and to say to it a million and a half people in philadelphia, and more around the world by television and radio, that is the highest calling for him. >> it's also the fact that this

was the main purpose for him coming to philadelphia, the world meeting of families and families have been part of his major focus. we have it in rome about the family and he's been focused on that almost exclusively. there he is kissing another baby. oh, to have a baby right now. look at this. >> part of the message for the bishop this morning was about the essential nature of the family and how that, in his words, is the true gift from god. we expects -- expect a little more of that today when the mass starts. the mass starts at 4:00 and the parade of people continues in philadelphia. we're going to get a quick break, just to squeeze it in for a moment before his holiness arri arrives, stage right, on the

as we get ready to say hello one more time and then good-bye on this historic visit. >> we're so used to seeing him here, it's almost like he's part of the family now. we will see him next week. no, we won't see him next week. he will go back to rome today. one of the things we keep seeing him do is kiss the children. people at home should know there are actually barricades. there's not the opportunity for them to run out. the security people have to go over to the fence, like this one is doing now, bring a child back to the pope, or bring a handi p handicapped person back to the holy father and have him kiss him. the security force now, many of the swiss gard know my instincts which ones he wants or the pope will direct them to say this one or that one and that's how they get across. you see the fence. they have to lift them over the fence to get to the holy father. >> take mine, take mine, he's

saying right there. please do. >> a strong security man, probably an italian security agent or swiss guard lifting up a little boy perhaps blind in sunglasses and holding up to the holy father who not only held him but touched his head in an adoring way and tussled his hair. we're used to the media being cynical. you mentioned last night the 8:00 parade, a lot of the media who finished work for the day congregated right behind our fox studios here to get a view and photograph for their own families and themselves the pontiff coming in on the popemobile. there was excitement. >> that's right. >> and infectious. >> we are not immune to the excitement going on because of the holy father here. we feel it as well. you talk about last night and last night there were featured six families who told their stories of struggle and many had

handicapped children and many struggling financially. they were from all different walks of life and around the world and told their stories. pope francis got out of his chair and went and greeted each one of them. he didn't wait for them to come to him. he is so much about the family, the fundamental covent between the church and god's creation. >> the last two at his side, they had a letter or message, a piece of paper in both their hands. we saw that earlier in washington. sometimes we wonder how you get chosen from this sea of humanity. >> there he goes again. >> why you? why me? what about you, peter? >> that was the question asked by his -- the holy father, what about you? we talked about that, bill, a call to faith and call to solidarity between people of all

your mind. i remember the first time i saw pope benedict in person the first time outside the cathedral on his visit to new york city avenue, you go, wow, there he is. this pope, it's the same effect, the same impact. what i note from this visit and his appearances, i don't know if it's the vestments, the shade of white, the way they have framed him, but he appears almost angelic in so many different locations where we have seen him. >> you're absolutely right. i think a lot of it is the force of his personality. he dresses simply. he dresses without a lot of the papal garments of the past. he was in simple green vestments for the masses we had already. but to be touched by the pope, as you talk about, i had the privilege from receiving communion from his holy father benedict at yankee stadium. that's a moment that will go

with me to my death. >> i bet. >> there is an ambience around him. the stage has now been transf m transformed into an altar from last night's family festival. there are sacred spaces. it is sacred because of what god reveals to you or because of what goes on there. i think that's what pope francis brings to any location. >> the image you see there is on the front of the layout for the mass. it's in a pamphlet handed out to us in the media and a lot of pilgrims at the altar. you will see in a moment the chair especially made for him and the case in washington and new york and philadelphia and every stop. you imagine the amount of pride the workers take to construct that chair. we will give you background on that. it came from the state of maine in a moment. let's pause for a moment. we have reached a point nearing the cre chscendo for this pope

the rest of the lord and the pope did his duty all week long, did his work, met with the president at the white house, went to congress and gave a memorable speech which left some in tears. went to new york and spoke to the united nations, to all of the leaders in the world. he was talking about the need to defend human life and the dignity of each person. now on sunday, he's at a mass which we're going to be watching in a few minutes and he is wrapping up and bringing together everything that he's done up until now. >> thank you, robert. the mass begins.

♪ >> translator: today the word of god surprises us with a powerful and thought-provoking image. the image which challenges but stirs us with enthusiasm in the

first reading, joshua tells moses that two members of the people are prophesizing, speaking a mandate. in the gospel, john tells jesus that the disciples had stopped someone from casting out evil spirits in the name of jesus. and here is the surprise. moses and jesus both rebuke those closes to them for being so narrow in their thinking. that all could be prophets by god's word, that everyone could work miracles in the lord's

name. jesus, instead encountered hostility from people who did not accept what he did. for them, jesus' openness to the honest and sincere faith of many men and women who were not part of god's chosen people seems intolerable. the disciples, for their part, acted in good faith but the temptation to be scandalized by the freedom of god who sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous alike bypassing

bureaucracy, officialdome and inner circles threatens the authenticity of faith. hence, it must be vigorously rejected. once we realize this, we can understand why jesus' words about causing scandal are so harsh. for jesus, the intolerable scandal consists in everything that breaks down and destroys our trust in the working of the spirit.

our father will not be outdone in generosity and continues to scatter seeds. he scatters the seeds of his presence in our world, not that we have loved god but that he loved us first. that love gives us a profound certainty, we are taught by god, we are -- god waits for us. it is this confidence which makes disciples which encourages, support and nurture the good things happening all around them. god desires for all our children to take part in the feast of the

gospel. do not hold back anything that is god. except, help it grow, jesus says. to reach doubts about the working of the spirit or to give the impression that it cannot take place who are not part of our group or who are not like us is a dangerous temptation. not only does it block conversion to the faith, but it is a perversion of faith. faith opens a window to the presence and working of the spirit. and it shows us that, like

happiness, holiness is always tied to little gestures. whoever gives you a cup of water in my name, jesus says a small gesture will not go unrewarded. these are little gestures that we learn at home, gestures that we learn in the family and that get lost amid all the other things that we do daily but they make each day different. these are the little gestures done by mothers, by grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers, by children and siblings. they are little signs of tenderness of affection and compassion. these are the little gestures of

a warm supper we look forward to at night of an early lunch or breakfast or waiting for someone who gets up early to go to work. they are the gestures of home, like a blessing before we go to bed or the hugs after we return from a hard day's work. love is shown by little things, by attention to those small daily signs which make our life always feel like we are at home. faith grows when it is practiced and it is shaped by love. that is why our families, our homes are true domestic churches. these are the right places for

faith to become life and for life to grow, for faith to grow in life. jesus invites us to not hold back these little miracles. instead, he wants us to encourage them, to make them grow. he asks us to go through life as our life presents itself. encouraging all these little signs of love as signs of his own living and active presence in our world. this action that we're invited to participate in leads us to ask ourselves, how are we trying to live this way in our homes,

in our societies? what are we doing in our homes, in our societies? what kind of world do we want to leave to our children? this is a question that we cannot answer alone. it is the spirit who challenges us to respond as part of the great human family can no longer tolera tolerate sterile divisions. the urgent challenge of protecting our home includes the concern all of the human family

together sustainable and integral development. for we know that things can change. the model of communion, not a division. may our children find in us men and women capable of joining others in bringing to full flower all the good seeds which the father has sown. pointedly, yet affectionately, jesus says, if you then who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly father give

the holy spirit to those who ask him. how much wisdom there is in these few words, it is true that as far as goodness and purity of heart are concerned, we, human beings, don't have much to show. but jesus knows that where children are concerned, we are capable of boundless generosity. and that's why he reassures us, if only we have faith, the father will give us his spirit. we christians, the lord's disciples, asks the families of the world to help us. many of us are here

participating at this celebration and this is in itself something prophetic, a kind of miracle in today's world. this world, tired of inventing new divisions, new forms of brokenness, are disasters. that we could all be prophets, would that all of us could be open to miracles of love for the sake of your own family and of all of the families of the world. and i'm talking here about the

miracle of love. and in this way, overcome the scandal of a narrow, petty love, mistrustful, closed in on itself and impatient of others. and i leave you with a question, a question for each of you to answer because i said impatient. in my own do we shout or do we speak to each other in love and tenderness? that's a good way of measuring

our love. how beautiful it would be if everywhere and even beyond our own borders we could appreciate and encourage this prophecy and this miracle. let us renew our faith in the word of the lord which invites our families to this openness. it invites all those who want to share the prophecy of this covenant of man and woman which generates life and reveals god. that he helped us to participate in this prophecy of tenderness

and kindness and he helps us to participate prophetic caring and patiently and lovingly to care for our children and grandparents. anyone who wants to bring into this world a family which teaches children to be excited by every gesture which is aimed at overcoming evil, a family which shows that the spirit is alive and at work will encounter and find our gratitude and appreciation regardless of what people, religion or region, to

which they belong. may god grant all of us to be prophets of the joy of the gospel of the gospel of family and a belove of family, to be prophet of the lord's disciple and may god grant us to be worthy of the purity of heart, which is not scandalized by the gospel. may it be so. children with loving god and with hope that today will begin a new spirit in our city and in our church. we owe a huge debt to mayor nutter, governor, archbishop and his staff and all of the state and federal workers who helped us make this event even possible. a special thanks to all of the wonderful donors, sponsors, co-chairs, staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring this celebration to fruition. that must be -- [ applause ] there must be family love for a more family world, god's dream from the first moment of creation has been to make all people into one family we have family like with st. joseph and the richness from our meeting

here in philadelphia, we have learned that we must make our own this dream of god, yes, god gives us and our families the gift of participating in his dream. after the meeting of the bishops in october and december 27th, during the feast, the jubilee of families will be celebrated in all of the diocese of the world. the doors will be open but at the same time we must open the doors of our homes and all the

doors to welcome our brothers and sisters who are in need of love. this is the prophecy. let all families that are called upon to fulfill and in this way, each family will become a sacrament. the city of brotherly love, philadelphia, and sisterly affection, the city that the liberty bell, the family bell is calling out families to welcome a stranger and accompany our sisters and brothers and rejoice. holy father, all families, your

presence pledge now to answer that call. [ applause ] and now it is a pleasure to announce that the holy father has decided that the next world meeting of families will be in 2018 in dublin, ireland. [ applause ]

>> holy father, acceptance is the first step on our journey to dublin and the families we tread the road with you. now we will be with you in spirit as you return to rome where in a week's time, the

bishops will begin and share with them the yoi ajoy of these families and we are with said family and families to bring the gospel of love and as a sign of the five families from five continents, we each receive from you 100,000 copies of the gospel of luke that i will distribute to the poor of their own cities.

americas, africa, europe, for australia. in addition, one more family is from syria. this family will go back home next week but they don't want to go back empty handed. they, too, will deliver the gospel to give the families who live in fear of bombardment but we also want to give them what we have collected at this mass from the thousands of generous families you see in front of you, that money will be used to

buy heating oil for their houses during the coming five months of winter cold. may this soon come to -- father, thank you very, very much for your presence and for your words. thank you. [ applause ]

[ applause ] ♪ >> what a remarkable scene here in philadelphia. the images and the sounds and the solemn moments and just to see hundreds of thousands get in line to receive holy communion. it's really difficult to put into words how moving the moment can be for those of us who brought it this to you at home or in your office or wherever you may find us right now. these are images that are indelible for all of us right

now. pope francis has just done that. in his closing words when he was about to say good-bye to philadelphia, he recalled the -- probably the most famous line he's ever had and that was when he was named the pope and he walked out in front of vatican city and said, "pray for me." and today he said, "pray for me. don't forget." lauren green is still with me, peter johnson jr. as well. we're going to watch the holy father move leave as he heads to his plane that leaves in two hours. he said, i leave you with a question, in your own home, do you shout or speak in love and tenderness? bear in mind, the meeting here in philadelphia was all about families and it felt as if the past 36 hours, frankly, this man was more comfortable talking about family life and listening to the troubles and the

challenges of families in a way that was so comfortable. it was almost his first language, lauren. >> this is exactly it because it's always been his focus, the family. it's been his passion. he talked about how the family was a domestic church. this is where you learn your faith. it doesn't happen with the big things. it happens with the small things, the small jegestures an this is how we grow in faith. >> he spoke about the families as the factory of hope and this week it came as a messenger of hope. and his message to the faithful, for those who believe in christ, engage in the little miracles. it can be a life of little miracles. but for all who want to lead a moral life, he's saying, breakdown the walls. reach out to others. love each other. be grateful towards each other and merciful towards each other.

>> brian moynihan, when you think about the vatican now and the message it wanted to transmit here in the united states, prior to this, cuba, what does the vatican want to take back on that plane tonight? what -- in a perfect world, what do they want us to be thinking about, do you believe? >> well, i have to say, i think the pope successfully carried out his mission. i think i was struck by a million and a half people in philadelphia, what a city. not a single act of violence. not a single problem. and the whole trip has been that way. there's been a lot of smiles, a lot of kissing of babies. so the pope gave the message of a -- as father jonathan said, as a father, as a person who wants fathers in their families and mothers in their families to take care of their children and all of us to take care of our world. so i think it's a message of

hope and i think the message got across. >> wow. father morris, what do you think? did the message hit home and did people hear it? and, if so, what do you think they heard? >> maybe this is very subjective but i was struck by when pope francis said that holiness is intimately tied to or intrinsically tied to small gestures, he said that in the homily. and then he went offscript, as you mentioned, and said, do you yell at each other in the house? do you speak with tenderness? you think of the type of things that he did while he was here in philadelphia and washington, d.c., and cuba, it was full of small gestures. and that, for me, means, okay, now i have to go home and do something and maybe they should begin -- that should begin. maybe holiness should begin with small gestures.

of course, holiness seems like a term but it's being united with god. it's being god-like, it's being christ-like and that makes what he has done, it's made that look very, very simple and actually feasible. >> thank you, father. father jonathan morrison in new york and brian moynihan as well, it's great to get the insight from you. thank you, gentlemen, for being with us today. and to my partners in philadelphia, lauren green and peter johnson jr., it's been a real honor. you never know when you have an experience like this how you might be moved or affected and i think the same is true for you as everybody else at home. you're not quite sure how you're going to come out on the other end. >> and we were moved to the fact that we were privileged to watch this and watch this with everyone at home. it was a humbling, moving experience. and it really does call us to be

better angels. every day. >> absolutely. i want to thank the staff here, too. it's been wonderful. they are not the people in front of the camera but the people we work with, the producers, cameramen and the assistants, it's been a great experience that we've all shared. >> thanks, philadelphia. the city has really turned out in a significant way. this is no small challenge to try to organize something like this. they had a mass here in 1979 with pope john paul ii so they kind of had a little experience to fall back on but, boy, just coming out here with flying colors in philadelphia tonight. a few more moves over the next couple of hours for the holy father before his plane is wheels up at 8:00 eastern time. and in his words, "pray for me, don't forget," we will keep that very close to our own hearts as we watch the final hours of coverage for pope francis here in america. first in cuba, then to washington, d.c., new york city

and now philadelphia. as we say good-bye from the city of brotherly love, we want to thank you at home for being a part of this. it is a -- it is a sense of community, without question, that is undeniable. that is what you feel when you're surrounded by this city of humanity. i'm bill hemmer, thanks for being here. "the fox report" comes up next. ♪ i'm harris faulkner. pope francis is wrapping up his landmark visit to america, as you just heard from bill hemmer and lauren green. the final images are amazing scenes, at least some that we've seen so far. a short time ago, that huge mass with more than 800 worshippers,

800,000 worshippers in the heart of philadelphia. before the pontiff departs, he is set to speak one more time briefly before getting on his plane and we'll bring you that live when it happens within the hour. the messages we've heard so far, love, family, faith and today he's emphasizing forgiveness. he began meeting in private with victims of sex abuse praising them as true heralds of mercy. pope francis promises to hold those responsible inside the church for the sex abuse scandal. then in philadelphia, a first from any pope, a visit to an american jail, offering hope and encouragement to some 100 inmates. among them, suspected killers and rapists. and then what we've come to know about the pope, he likes to do the unexpected. this time, the pope's parade on the way to the mass, he got out of the popemobile to go into what has been dubbed the grotto. pope francis went inside and actually read some of them.

lau laura is live. laura? >> reporter: the pope is wrapping up his message of love and faith and family and hope. we've been here all day talking to the masses, speaking to people from all over the world who have made this pilgrimage, who have put this on their calendar and came here for this moment that has just unfolded before us. we just got the unofficial t tally. right now, 850,000 people in attendance. that number may very well grow as people start dispersing. to put that into perspective, if you've ever seen the photos of woodstock, remember that? well, this was well over two times the amount of people who were at woodstock back in 1969. now, when we talked about the pilgrims from all over the world, they converged here onto the benjamin franklin parkway, to hear the pope, take the message of love, forgiveness and

family back home. one nun told me she was filled with joy thinking of how the pope embraces everyone, all faiths, all people. a man named danny told me that he had lost touch with his faith and was drawn to philadelphia to see this pope at this time, saying this just feels different this time around. it made him want to reconnect with his church, which is why he came and with his community and his family. and then i talked to a little girl from florida who also had cozied up to a group of women who had traveled from overseas to pray for the people in their homeland, in syria. even then, that little girl ava said she felt like she was part of something big, something that would change her life forever. these are the stories of the people who made it here to the city of philadelphia. now, as we look forward, the pope will leave here in a covered motorcade. he'll go to the airport that he is where he will meet privately with vice president joe biden and his family. joe biden leading the american delegation.

then, they'll move over to a different hangar at the airport where he'll give a final remark in english, a farewell and then it's hard to believe, harris, philadelphia has been filled with so many people, the streets blocked off and security so high, it's time to say good-bye to the pope and everyone here is leaving this weekend with an incredible memory, lots of photos and, you know, just something that will last for a lifetime. >> i know. i've been watching on social media. the selfie after selfie with this particular pope. undeniably touching technology, if you will, but also a bend to the younger generations and people who stay connected all around the world with one visit to america. it's been something to see. an important couple of hours as he wraps up his visit. laura ingle, thank you for being part of it. this began in washington, d.c., on tuesday. the pontiff met with the first family, delivered an historic address before congress. the holy father that arrived in new york city stopped at

the 9/11 memorial, celebrated mass inside madison square garden and delivered another address, this time at the united nations. and then it was onto philadelphia. yesterday that visit started for the original reason, actually, for the trip, the world meeting of families which happened yesterday. his holiness also toured independence hall and spoke about protecting religious freedom as well as immigration. well, let's bring in somebody who has extensive knowledge about the catholic church and tradition. fox newschannel's executive vice president, john moody, author of "pope john paul ii" and served as vatican correspondent. you know what you're talking about with the pope. my big question, as we look at these last two hours, john, is what gets left behind when pope francis goes home? >> well, i think more than anything, spirit is left behind and that's exactly what it should be for a pope.

i have to say, this might have been the most successful blind date on record. i mean, here's a guy from argentina. he's never been to the united states before. he's elevated to the highest possible position in the church. and some of his early remarks, i think, could have been misinterpreted in the united states as being anti-capitalist and anti-american. he came here, america got to see him. he got to see some of the beautiful things about america and they both found that they had a lot of in common and i wouldn't doubt for a second that there will be more days. >> i want to drive everybody's attention to what is happening on the left side of the screen. that's the media that has gathered at the airport there. we expect pope francis to arrive momentarily as the mass has just wrapped he'll go there. we're anticipating that he will meet privately with the vice president, joe biden, and his wife for a short period of time. he'll also speak inside that

hangar for just a few brief comments, we're told. we anticipate that will be in english. we'll bring you all of this as it happens live. and then he'll depart the united states. you know, i want to compare him, if you would, john, because you've covered his predecessor, what is it like for the pope to make the decisions that this pope has made along the way. the unexpected visits that really became a hallmark, particularly for yesterday and today. you had a meeting with the victims of child sex abuse. you had -- you know, it was scheduled but still first of its kind visit to the american jail. >> i think the only thing you know for sure about pope francis is you don't know what he's going to do and he likes it that way and he's the pope and he can do pretty much whatever he wants. >> is that normal? >> it's very unnormal. i think it's unique. i'm not sure that we'll ever see anything quite as unscripted and spontaneous as francis on the role. >> he spoke to the american

people. he spoke to the people, the american people elected. what do you expect the lasting impact on some of the issues to be that we're dealing with here in america? >> it's probably too early to say that there will be a lasting impact. this was, after all, a trip of five days, magnificent as they were. i do think that he got his message across to americans who were unfamiliar with him. and remember, not -- though there are 70 million catholics, not everybody is riveted on pope francis' story and everything that he's been saying. he has, i think, made clear that he is not an anti capitalist, he's not a communist. he took pains on the ride from cuba to the united states, look, i'm not a leftist. i don't know where people are getting this idea. what he's done is given his message of love, hope, unity and, most of all, compassion. and it was heard over and over. none more clearly than when he was at that school in harlem.

i mean, he looked fantastic. he looked ten years younger than he did when he was addressing the united nations and -- >> well, only if all of us could do that. >> if only all of us could do that. but he likes being around kids. that's part of the beauty. >> harlem was added to the schedule a couple of days in. as many of us were reacting to this, we were trying to choreograph that for the public and be best prepared to talk about them. obviously, we're not tasked with keeping them safe. but we were reactionary somewhat like the people were around him today. he reached out to the crowd. we have this picture prepared of a little baby girl who was dressed as he is dressed. >> uh-huh. >> and what's so interesting about that is that was another unscripted moment where, you know, these parents had a little baby girl. they thought, how can we get the pope's attention? there she is. look at her.

miss maddie. he kissed her and then you could see him laughing. he was amused by this. >> he has a great sense of humor and that's something we've seen in the past days, though he can address the united nations and be on the same stage as the president of the united states, though he can address congress, what he really likes are moments like this, his personality comes through so much so clearly and so much more authentically than what he has to do, stand up there on a podium and walk the walk. >> yeah, i don't know if people had anticipated the kind of crowd that had gathered outside for that mass. i mean, we knew that there were roughly 83,000 tickets that the venue could hold and a holding area right outside of that with about 250,000 people. what nobody really anticipated was close to a million would gather in total. >> i think it's word spread through this visit that this is a really extraordinary person who is visiting us. it's not so much that it was a

celebrity thing. we want to be part of this. something in us compels us to want to be part of this and to be close somehow physically to this person. >> so, part of what we're watching for, ticking down to 1:45 of his visit here in the united states, he will meet with the vice president, who we know has suffered a personal loss in his family, his son beau, the loss of him recently. you know, outside of that, what does that kind of meeting typically entail? >> i think this will be a mixture. the vice president did meet the holy father when he was in washington. it won't be their first meeting. but you can imagine, if it's in private quarters and none of this be around to get in the way, i'm sure the pope will have something to say about the loss that the vice president has suffered and give him some words of comfort. he's comforted so many people in

just two years of being pope and it doesn't matter if you're a vice president of the united states or an impoverished citizen of argentina, he knows how to say the right thing to tell you i care. >> two quick things to tell you before i go. that has to do again with how this pope -- what he'll leave behind. so people i've talked with, including my own mom who is southern baptist, they all said the same thing. company not stopwatching this because it was a universal show of love that people were watching for and not so much religiocity and not so much a denomination of faith. >> i think that's right. the catholic church to the holy father is the center of his being and it's the spring board for his message but he doesn't care if you're catholic or not. >> or even churched. he said i don't care if you know how to pray. >> pray for me and don't forget.

it was that sort of human touch, don't forget, that i think makes him appeal to people of all faiths or no faiths and that might be the lasting impact of this trip, that people who left the church come back or people who have never been part of the church think about it. >> and then you have the pope doing some business within his own church as well, visiting with the victims of child sex abuse. quickly, your thoughts on that? >> this was a very important step for him to take. popes, including pope francis, have been criticized for not showing enough compassion and for concentrating their comments to the bishops of the church. those who have survived this kind of abuse will be scarred forever. there's no doubt about that. what pope francis i think was trying to say is, i am so sorry that this happened. not during my watch but at any time because a priest is supposed to be your friend, not your predator. some people have said it's not

enough, that he should have gone further. it's possible that certain people will never be satisfied with this and this was an atrocious occurrence but i think the pope went a long way towards trying to explain his feelings about it and to say this will not happen again. >> john moody, thank you. and i know you're going to stick around with us for the next little while. i appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> thank you. earlier today, the pope met with an argentine family. the parents quit their job and drove 13,000 miles to see the pope in philly. and from their home in argentina to pennsylvania, they made 12 border crossings, 194 days on the road. of course, pope francis is also from argentina and the vatican said he was very touched by the family's experience. well, we are awaiting for the pope's farewell. we are watching outside of philadelphia international airport as well. we've got some video along the

route as this pope begins his final trek here in the united states, to the airport, to speak with worshippers there, we'll cover it all for you. the pope giving his farewell speech. we're told that will be in english and brief. he's set to have wheels up at 8:00 p.m. eastern if not before. we've gotten some notes that he may scoot out before that. but wow, what a trip it has been. and as john moody just said, it doesn't matter which faith or where you're coming from with all of this, it's been really what the word means, awesome to be hold, to take in. we'll cover it all. stay with us here on "fox report." ♪ hi, tom. how's the college visit? does it make the short list? yeah, i'm afraid so. it's okay. this is what we've been planning for. knowing our clients personally is why edward jones

all right. there's an update now to pope francis' trip. john moody is on the set with me now. we're kind of used to this now of the pope. the most successful blind date ever? >> ever. >> us getting to know him. now we're told that he's running ahead of schedule, which he's wanted to do since he's been in the united states. it happens now and then with the

pope. now, generally when that happens, we find out that something has been unexpectedly added. we don't know if that's the case. here's what we can tell everybody. in about ten minutes he'll give brief statements before he departs at the philadelphia international airport. i do want to bring in former ambassador to boston. thank you for joining us. so here we have this picture. what stands out, in your mind, from pope franceis' trip? >> well, i think the emphasis on the family, which was long overdue, as far as i am concerned, we really needed it at this particular time. sure, going to the white house and speaking to the congress and going up to the united nations,

all of that is very, very important. but the struggle, the challenge ahead of us here in america is about the family and stability, the foundation of our society, the family. look, harris, political minds, i don't think, john moody i bet will agree with this, my old friend, political minds i don't think will be changed but i think hearts will change here in america. these last few days. >> the pope called families, as you're talking ambassador, factories of hope. and that was his message. i know it's fascinating for me to see you two talk to each other because you covered the pope's visit when i believe am, ambassador, you were the ambassador to the city. your paths have crossed. >> we have, indeed. we have worked hard to make sure that visit to pope john paul ii and president clinton at the time was a success. >> that's right, john.

and besides that, talking about historic trips, john, you know, i saw -- i met john paul ii in 1969. i was in politics in boston at the time. and then i was born in the polish district and then after leaving philadelphia he was a bishop then. and then 1979, his first trip to america was in the city of boston. but i have to say, this is probably the most memorable, most profound -- i always thought, john, that the pope's visit, pope john paul ii's visit to poland, immediately after he was elected pope, when he said, be not afraid when poland was under communist domination. but this takes the cake, isaac. >> all right. we're going to break away for a moment. pope francis making his way to philadelphia international airport. he's running early. these are very important last

says, guess what, i'm the pope. >> i thought that meant something different. >> we're all learning. >> yeah, we are all learning. okay. we're expecting him to emerge from the fiat. fiat 1, as they've been calling it. and then the archbishop will -- as we understand it right now, introduced by vice president biden who will speak for a few minutes and then the archbishop will then introduce pope francis who will speak for just ten minutes. okay. here we go. this is it. these are the last few minutes. and for a pope who has proven that he's just not quite done yet, along every route he's taken, stopping things, getting out. >> he's had a surprise on every stop. >> yeah, he really has. here he's built in an extra 10 or 15 minutes, what would that look like? added a longer time for him to do handshaking after he's finished talking. >> and it's what he likes best. talking to them, having a last experience with the american people. >> you know, john, i don't think

it's too overblown to say this. i'm hearing it from different people who have seen him along the route, that he seems to bubble up around people and not bubble up so much around politicians and others where he keeps more of a scripted look. >> yeah, he can do both. he clearly likes being with people. >> archbishop chaput. let's watch and listen. >> bishop john mcintire, the president of the world meeting of families, mrs. donna criley, executive director, the leadership of the co-chairs and committee of world meeting of families. and the work of so many others. please keep them and all of us in your prayers. we especially ask you, holy father, to bless these wonderful people who made the event happen. we want you to know, once again, that the hearts of the people of the city of brotherly love are

that our days of prayer are a reflection of the importance of the family for society we inspire families to seek the church as the constant companion whatever challenges they might have. at the end of my visit, i would also like to thank all those who prepare in the archdiocese of washington and new york and

junipero serra who reminds us all to be missionaries. and i was also very hum welled to stand with my brothers and sisters of other religions at ground zero that speaks so powerfully of the mystery of evil yet we know that it never has the last word. [ applause ]

and that in god's merciful plan, love and peace triumph overall. mr. vice president, together with the assurance of my prayers for american people, this land has been blessed with tremendous gifts and opportunity. i pray that you may be always be good and generous stewards of the human and material resources entrusted to you.

i am thankful that i witnessed the faith of god's people in this country as manifested in our moments of prayer and evidenced in so many works of charity. jesus says in the scriptures, truly i say to you, as you did to one of the least of these men, you did it to me. your generous welcome is a sign of your love for jesus and for your faithfulness to him.

so, too, is your care for the poor, the sick, the homeless and the immigrant. your defense of life at every stage and your concern for family life. [ applause ] you recognize that jesus in your midst and that you care for one another as you care for jesus himself. as i leave, i ask all of you, especially the volunteers and benefactors who have assisted with the world meeting of families, do not let your

enthusiasm for jesus, his charge, the families and the border family of society run dry. may our days together bear fruit that will last, generosity and care for others that will endure just as we have received so much from what gifts have been given us and not of our making, so let us give to others in return. dear friends, i embrace all of you in the lord and i entrust you to the mat turn nal care of

through this trip is, it's not a perfect world. all we can do is try to make it better. >> yeah. you know, i was watching social media for a moment and people were saying it's nice to hear the room breathe without us talking over it. i think it's important, especially as someone is saying in the last few moments here, it has been in the last hour and a half, we know that vice president joe biden is there. his wife, dr. widen. from what i understand, a sizeable contingent of people that they brought with them. then there was the first of, will the vice president speak before the pope or after the pope. john, you said neither. >> the vice president is wise enough to know that this is the pope's moment and he gave it to him. >> what do you make of -- well, and we do have some scenes outside. we haven't taken people out there in the last few minutes. but marching band and they have rolled out a red carpet. there are at least 25, 30 people

on the stairs of the plane. a lot going on outside. and you see the lineup of the services, the law enforcement and all of the support team that has been traveling with the pope over the past few days and each city it changes hands but always that contingent of wonderful sea of blue that you see in every city and you see that here. but inside, the pope saying, his last few words, we know that there were lots of children because we could hear them inside this hangar here at this airport. >> i don't know if you noticed, just as he was walking along this line, saying good-bye to people, somebody held a child up to him and the pope made a funny face, just like that. >> a baby? >> for the baby. >> my prayers to the american people. this land has been blessed with many gifts and opportunities and he said earlier today, be open to miracles of love. we want to bring back ambassador flynn who, formerly, was the u.n. ambassador to the vatican city. ambassador flynn, you're with us?

>> yes, indeed, i am. >> you've been there before. what are the last moments like with the pope? does he make his message clear or is it just about love and good-bye or all the white houses and uns,

the images that will stay with people forever. simple images of love and kindness. i think this is what this is all about. write all the headlines you want. those special needs are indelible in the hearts and minds of the american people. >> so true. i can't tell you, it is such a difference for people to have their own records. as journalists we have records. i always take a camera with me. i wanted my own personal do documentation. people can do this for themselves momentarily, i wanted to take a pause and we did for several minutes just to let people take it in. >> this may easily be the most selfied pope of all time.

he submits to things like that, but not only that, he enjoys it. he cracks a smile, he talks back when people ask him a question. he is the king of the roman cast lick church and he's not acting like it. >> he's in charge of it, but you don't get that sense that i'm a ceo, i'm an important guy. it looks like he's on vacation. >> by the way, if i'm fiat, no one's happier than me right now. >> there are blessings in many ways and they have received their blessing. >> you have so diplomatic. let's take it in again. i want to lower our voices and just watch this unfold.

actually he will have spent more time saying good-bye personally to this crowd than he did speaking. let's watch.
