12:00 pm
from next door. there are at least five ambulances on scene and we just heard from another local reporter describing the scene on campus, it was described as pure chaos. block can. >> it's 3:00 on the east coast, noon on the west coast, and a tiny school of ump -- umpqua minute knowledge in roseburg, oregon, where a campus shooting has taken place and authorities confirm at least ten people are dead at umpqua community college and a number of other people are injured and have been transported to local hospitals after a shooting rampage happened this morning on campus. the best of the information that we have together is for you as follows: sometime between 10:00 and 10:45 pacific daylight time this morning, a lone gunman entered the campus of umpqua community college, made his way in one way or another to snyder hall, an academic building. made his way into snyder hall,
12:01 pm
went into a classroom, and began shooting. we do not know whether anyone in that classroom was targeted. we do not have any information about who was hit. we don't know whether that -- the shooter then left that classroom and proceeded to others, and whether he moved next door to the science building as has been suggested by some social media and other authorities. we just don't yet have that confirmed. i can tell you we're getting new information through "associated press". -- this is from "associated press," and we now have an official confirmation from the douglas county board official, just told rate tiers at least 15 people have been shot and killed at umpqua community college. less than 20 but i don't have an exact number. 20 withouted -- 20 people
12:02 pm
wounded and -- we have just had confirmed that at least seven people are dead and 20 people are hurt. this is the reason i'm never confident with reporting numbers in the early going on matters like this, because otruth is, different officials who are qualified to speak as authorities, give different numbers and different accounts. not because anyone wants to be inaccurate but because when something so incredible and unthinkable happened, not on the other side of the country bought right in front of you eyes, it's impossible to process. so we have two different official reports coming in at exactly the same time, oregon state police lieutenant bill fugate says at least seven dead and at least 20 hurt in the college shoot, and yet a board official has now said the death toll is much higher. either way, the shooter is reported to be down. we do not know how that
12:03 pm
happened. we can tell you that the shooter in one way or another became incapacitated. i suppose it's entirely possible the authorities took this person into custody. it's also possible that the authorities or someone else took this person down. the first reports came to authorities by 9-1-1 calls and the local sheriff's department and fire department arrived. the town is roseburg. the county officials were there as well. the campus with 3,000 students there, and a normal day for campus activities, kids and teachers in classes and going about their normal business, south of salem, in what would amount to the western edge of the state next southwest quadrant. we monitor this state from our west coast news hub and different newsrooms on the coast but the hub is our los angeles newsroom where trace gallagher is. what do you have? >> reporter: just to give you a better idea of the lay of the land. you can see snyder hall. that is number 12.
12:04 pm
building number 12 is snyder hall. the building next to it is the science building. our information is the majority of the building happened in or around snyder hall. we believe it began in a classroom. we don't know if it spilled to the outside or not. the science building has been cleared. we don't know if it was a s.w.a.t. team that cleared but it has been cleared. it's unclear if there were injuries or shooting victims in or around the science building. but for the time being our inflammation is the science building has been cleared and the building next to it, which is building number -- well, we know the name. it's wayne hall. wayne hall has also been cleared. so if you look at the cluster of buildings there, they're also telling us action oxy gonial building has been cleared. so around snyder hall, the focus of the shooting, the building surrounding it have now been cleared. we know the shooter is down. we're staying away from death toll numbers because we're
12:05 pm
getting various accounts. we can tell you we believe 11 patients have been transported. one person has been taken by life flight from the junior college and one person at last check was still waiting to be taken to life flight. so that gives us 13 patients being transported to hospital. the main medical center in roseburg, population 21,000, is mercy medical center. we have got a call into mercy medical center. they have not yet called this back. as you might imagine. they are running about as hectic a day as the police, fire department, ambulances. our information is they called off all the planses so no more medical resources are needed to the junior college. we have been told that school buses have been brought on to the junior college, was we all know school buses north needed for junior college but the theory is they're going to use the buses to take away students. you talked to a student who what holed in the back of bailing and
12:06 pm
had been given no information. our information is that s.w.a.t. teams were going building to building, and you know that's a very methodical thing, making sure nobody else who might be involved in the shooting is near the vicinity. 0 i have to master keys so the s.w.a.t. teams are going building to building to building and see if there's danger and if not, notify the students it's clear, the shooter is down. we can also toll you that atf, alcohol to back co and firearms is on scene. the fbi has been notified. so, everybody who is anybody from the feds to state to locals is on scene, investigating this shooting. the death toll continues to rise from the numbers we got earlier. exact numbers are all over the board. but we can tell you at least 13 patients have been transported to local hospitals. we'll keep monitoring the traffic and get back to you withmer information. >> trace gallagher, thank you te douglas county sheriff's
12:07 pm
department which serves roseburg and umpqua community college. the first 9-1-1 call was 10:38 al. the center receiving a report of a shooting at the college. police units from multiple jurisdictions responded. so from the county and town and state police. fbi are in route. alcohol tobacco and firearms in addition. here's new information. studentsstudents and faculty mes being bussed to douglas county fairgrounds, student they put all the students on buses and have been taking them to the fairgrounds and parents or friends who want to pick them up can do that at the fairground. from a red laird from reuters, the 9-1-1 call, 10:38 a.m. pacific time. we'll eventually get the 9-1-1 calls and be able to explain to you what it is authorities were hearing in the early going.
12:08 pm
of the following we're certain. a number of people have been killed and at least 11 people have been taken to the local hospital there and marilyn kittleman is there, the owner of the roseburg beacon and a mother of a student. how are you and do you have information? >> i'm doing good, and, yeah, we have -- we're getting kind of a constant stream of information. i have a few resources inside. my son is on campus, which is extremely scary, and especially since i have a 17-year-old son on campus, and my other daughter on the osu campus -- i have a completely unprotected son, but he is currently awaiting evacuation. they've currently had four buses, absolutely packed to the gills full of students and teachers who have come out of the campus driveway. i don't know if you're aware but
12:09 pm
osp, the oregon state patrol, has offices at the end of the driveway where you go into osu. so they were very close and very quick to respond, and so there's a lot going on here. i also talked to one young lady in a classroom, and she literally ran from the campus. we talked to her at the end of the road, which is three-quarters of a mile long, she was crying and said she wasn't waiting around to be rescued. she was living. >> marilyn kit. man on the line, who -- marilyn kit. man on the line with us. have you been given information? the best information i've gotten is that this gunman, whoever he is, went to snyder hall and started opening fire in a classroom. do you have anything more to add to that? >> what i've been told it was the science building and -- >> next door to snyder hall. >> right, and they're definitely ten confirmed dead and could be up to as many as 25 wounded, and -- but i don't have anything more than that. we know it sun in the history
12:10 pm
building -- it wasn't in the history building mitchell son says it's serious no sound of shootings. he said that this area, they're using spressers -- he is very aware of firearms and is a shooter and he says no noise no shooting no nothing help said it's hard to believe there were up to 30 rounds shot, which is what we heard. >> i'm sure that at some point we'll get the details. i wonder if your sons -- have you gotten any informing about what kind of person this was, a young person, old person, anything? >> no. noing. the other thing that has gone around -- i have not heard it from an official source but my son said there are there has been a lot of texting going on and we know some veterans on campus and there's a rumor about this maybe being not one person, but you know how things go expects that not confirmed but -- -- >> my understanding from authorities they believe the person who did the firing is the
12:11 pm
only one who is causing trouble, and now as matter of standard procedure they're checking to see if anybody else had information or was in cahoots but at this moment we have no reason to believe that authorities think anyone who is there is in any danger now. >> i agree. >> that's authoritying to authorizeds -- according to authorities. i wonder if you know if this person said anything or action were? clearly some people who were in the room escaped. >> i have not been able to hear from anyone who is in the classroom, and i would be very, very surprised if there's a single person in that classroom that has been made accessible to the public or the media. hang on. i have an update. >> they said they believe there's a rioter that may be hiding in a car on campus and that's the reason they're evacuating campus right now. is that a credible source -- from a student on campus. so unconfirmed. >> i don't know what a rioter
12:12 pm
is. >> i don't know. it's all hearsay. back to your question. i doubt anyone in that room has been made available to make a statement. i'm sure they're either in the hospital or not. >> marilyn kittleman, the owner of the leesburg beacon and the mother of a young man we spoke to. the best to you and your family. difficult days ahead. >> thank you very much. i appreciate it. >> waiting for the first official on-camera or otherwise information dissemination exercise from authorities. we are expecting that at any moment. we are told we should expect to hear something real in a moment. our station kezi with a reporter on scene. listen. >> they need to go to the fairgrounds to pick up their sons and daughters. that's where they're sending students. we saw the school buses drive up college road. 30 minutes ago, and now we learned they're going to head over to the fairgrounds, and
12:13 pm
just driving by, they opened other hospitals around the area, from cottage grove to accept more injured people. we don't know how many are injured. the douglas county sheriff's office is actually the lead investigators, and we have not spoken to the pio from the sheriff's office yet. we are waiting to hear more information but the newest piece of information is the students at the campus are taken to the fairground -- >> i that's from kval station in nearby eugene, oregon. so, the information is now being spread on a number of fronts. how the students are being evacuated. there are concerns among some of the locals there might be a second person out there. that is normal course of business sadly when this thing happened. my experience has been when there is an active shooter
12:14 pm
situation, when authorities are concerned there might be someone else who would cause harm, they're very quick to tell the news media of something like that, and think how easy it is. we still believe somebody is out there. be careful. that is an easy tweet, and one they would have made in the last hour. we're confident if that were the case. from everything we have got frontal authorities there's no reason for anyone to be concerned about future problems. they believe the only shooter involved in this incident has been taken down and there is no further cause for concern. if that changes and reports change, we'll bring that to you immediately. it's quarter past the hour now. in roseburg, oregon, where they're now trying to piece together exactly what happened over the last hour and a half. we know that a shooter, unknown age, unknown background, and unknown motive, has come on campus two buildings they're talking's, snyder hall, academic building and, the science
12:15 pm
building next door. a shooting in either one or both buildings, at least one classroom there, and that a number of people have been shot and killed, and that a number of people have been taken to local hospitals with varying injuries, including gunshot wounds. the local authorities do confirm that they have no need for further assistance, which suggests to us that they believe they have the situation contained, and under control. students are being evacuated. being taken by buses to a nearby fairground, and now everyone on scene trying to figure out what happened and why. trace gallagher still watching. we have a number of local affiliates there and lots of reporters on the ground, trace? they're having a very hard time getting clarity here. >> and in fairness it's only been an hour and 40 minutes since the shooting happened so there's a lot of misinformation. just to pick up on what you were
12:16 pm
saying about the possibility of more threats of another shooter being on there, the police issued a code 4, which is very clearly meaning this is a stable situation, and the police just don't issue those willy-nilly. they believe they have this under control. the campus is still on lockdown. there are s.w.a.t. teams still going from building to building. they have master keys and are checking for take -- for danger, and the information they have and the information they're conveying to the community, and to user is is that this is coat 4, a stable -- code 4, a state situation and some shooter has been neutralized. while we have this on the screen right now, it's important to point out that the previous guest you had was talking about possibility that the shooting was in the science building. our information is right now the science building has been cleared. the building to the right of the science building, wayne hall, has also been cleared, and right
12:17 pm
now, snyder hall is where we believe the shooting actually began. whether it began inside and spilled over outside, we don't know at this point in time. it clearly could have gone over to the science building, and around the science building or other buildings, but snyder hall appears to be a focus. the science building has been cleared and other buildings around snyder hall have also been cleared. our information at this point in time is that 13 patients have been transported or are waiting to be transported. the ambulances have been called off so no more ambulance needed at the scene. they were still waiting to transport one student by life flight. one had already been flown away and they were barrett the helicopter to come back and take away the other student, and we believe the injuries are at least the less severe injuries were taken to mercy medical center, which is the main medical facility right there in roseburg. umpqua, and the tone of
12:18 pm
roseburg, 21,000 population town, and you know and i know, shep, that police forces in those towns run 20 to 30 police officers, not nearly enough to handle the situation they're in, which is why you have surrounding areas rushing to the scene. >> some further details coming to us now, trace. ""the oregonian"" newspaper has spoken with the life flight. they sent six chopper to the college, and now we have talked to a sacred heart hospital which i'm told is a level one trauma center in eugene, oregon if you are in very bad shape, you go to a level one trauma center. there they have the facilities to handle your situation quickly and efficiently because time is of the essence with vive very gunshot wounds. they're told to expect two patientsers one in eugene with a gunshot to the back, one with a gunshot to the chest. again, six life flight helicopters have been sent there
12:19 pm
and our understanding is that sake credit heart, in eugene, is expecting two of those patients. the rest going to mercy medical center. ""the oregonian" up in has been covering -- up newspaper has ben covering this and in the numbers are all over the place. you can see the number of dead and injured varying and part of the reason is there's been no central reporting agency to come forward to tell the local people there what has happened specifically in their community. we have gotten word from a county supervisor, and with one set of stacks and another -- unless we get something specific from the agency in charge on the ground we'll hold off on numbers and suffice to say a number of people have been killed and a number of people have been injured in this shooting rampage on campus.
12:20 pm
depending on which authorities you believe the suspect has either been taken down, which normally means tackled and incapacitated or shot, or the suspect has been taken into custody. there is credible reporting from multiple agencies of those two scenarios but all of them seem to agree. the only shooter is no longer able to shoot and the authorities have the situation under control. frankly no matter how quickly it happened today, it wasn't quickly enough, as whoever the shooter is, according are to multiple reports, was able to fire something in the range of 30 round is what witnesses are telling us, a number of witnesses now reporting as many as 75 emergency vehicles on scene, and by that i mean police cars and fire departments and medics and the rest. again, a town of 21,000, campus of but 3,000. swarmed now with authorities. we know the life flight helicopter agency there has told ""the oregonian" newspaper that
12:21 pm
six choppers have been sent in and everyone who has needed assistance has gotten assistance and now it's a matter of sorting out who did this and why this person thought it necessary to go on a shooting rampage on the campus. this is the period where we watch the local television stations and one which we have been watching is kval, where they have a correspondent on scene. listen in. >> just a beautiful campus, and the kids just getting back to school. now the shootings, which just so tragic, with seven to ten people losing their lives this morning. that's the number confirmed now. we have had one short press briefing near the state police office in the parking lot, where they have put the press and media, and expect we'll be getting more information this
12:22 pm
afternoon in the form of a news conference. now, the latest news in terms of student thursday at the college, school buses were taken on to the campus where they loaded the students and they are being taken to the douglas county fairgrounds, and down i-5 is a few miles just south there of roseburg, and that where is they will be reunited with family and friends. the local hospital that is jew a -- is just a very busy place and we were told by reporters, who have been following this since it started, they are telling us the number of people is just amazing who have been up there. >> thanks to kval station. their local representative is a
12:23 pm
man named jeff cruz, republican from oregon's first district, which includes roseburg. senator cruz is in the area at this moment and is on the live line with us. senator to you and all of those in your district, our heart-felt are so rove this afternoon. -- sorrow this afternoon. do you have in the information? >> it ms. we choice to stay away from college. this is a situation where the less number of people interfering with the experts who are doing the work, the better off. but what i have heard at this point is the death toll is somewhere in neighborhood of 15 to 17, about 20 injured, and the last report i heard was it's no longer an active shooting situation, that the shooter is in custody. so, at this point in time, basically, what's going on out there is they are checking all
12:24 pm
of the other buildings on the campus, and trying to get everybody off campus to a safe spot. >> senator jeff cruz of oregon's first district, which includes rosburg, where the master cass hasn't place. new video from viewers. senator cruz, 15 to 17 dead, do you have any information about this shooter? where he shot or who he is? >> well, supposedly the shooting took place in the science building, and at this point -- i think appropriately so -- law enforcement is not releasing any of the information because quite honestly, you don't want to put out misinformation. so, at this point, i know there's going to be a press conference held relatively soon by the state police and the county sheriff, but i would
12:25 pm
expect that sort of information probably won't be coming out for a while -- >> senator kse, forgive me forn. this just in from -- this is the first official word that we have gotten from the spokesman for the sheriff's department. the spokeswoman just confirmed to fox news and others there is no more threat from the shooting. that's the first official information we have gotten and it's the best news of the day. senator, do you have any information whether this happened in one classroom or multiple? >> i believe while it was in one of the buildings, i have a feeling that most of the buildings have quad areas, so i could make an assumption -- i don't know that -- by the way, the college is umpqua community college but not southwest. >> it looks like the
12:26 pm
southwestern part of the state. >> it is. >> has anyone characterized this to you, senator kruse, as a student, someone older, younger, anything? >> no. like i said, that information -- law enforcement is doing its job right, they are not going to release that sort of information until they have done all of their fact checking, which i think is appropriate. >> i certainly agree. my experience -- there's been a lot of it sadly with this -- often when authorities shoot and kill a suspect, or take that suspect into custody, look at the driver's license, and then they're able to talk to that person's family to find out, had this person had problems, had this person been running with anyone else who i might want to cause harm, and for that reason and that reason among others they might not release that information. they'll know whether it's appropriate to do that or not. i wonder if you have talked we any of your con -- con state --
12:27 pm
constituents. >> the first contact i had was a good friend of mind who works in the d.a.'s office, and she called me to tell me about this because i wasn't listening to the radio or anything, and i have had some conversations at this point in time. quite honestly, the community is in total shock at this point, and -- >> senator, senator jeff kruse on the line, who represents district one in oregon which cover thes community college, senator-under our condo helps and thing. >> thank you, and i wish we would talk under better circumstances. >> thank you. umpqua community college, six miles outside of roseburg, and enrolls nearly 5,000 students. we have been saying 3,000 because it's believed that 3,000 would be on campus at any given time. as you might imagine, it's just
12:28 pm
chaos at the moment and the only thing hey have gotten is still pictures from local reporters. the campus has been locked down to anyone coming on to campus, and they're frantically busy trying to get people to hospitals and get parents notified. local coverage now, coming us from kval in eugene, listen. >> people who saw it, who were there, who -- the parents and the students and the teachers, the administration, who must have so much fear when they go back to remember this. it's really going to be just an awful situation for a while. >> the kind of thing we have heard about across the country, of course, columbine, we go back to there, and then before that, here in oregon, in our area, at thurston high school, with the shooting there and at the house with his parents but there's no information.
12:29 pm
we have no confirmation, i understand, that people are being taken to other hospitals. could be a situation where they have been put on standby, depending on the number of people who were injured, but we know at mercy medical center the hospital there in roseburg, we have heard five ambulances are there -- >> our thanks to kval. just got new information from mercy medical center. they now received officially nine patients from what they call the tragedy at ucc, or umpqua community knowledge, -- community college three more patients are in route. mercy hospital where is the less severely students would be taken. the life flight helicopter authorities talked with ""the oregonian"" newspaper and informed them they sent six hospitals to the scene. the hospital that is a level one trauma center reported it's receiving at least two patients, one with a gunshot wound to the chest and one with a gunshot wound to the back.
12:30 pm
so, those two, plus nine now at the local medical center, and three more in route. on the heels of an unthinkable tragedy and a shooting rampage in a community college today in southwestern oregon. >> it's 3:30 on the east coast, half past noon on the west coast and in the town of oregon. this is fox news channel's continuing coverage of the shooting massacre in roseburg. the college is six miles outside of town. a small community college, about 5,000 students. 3,000 believed to be on campus at any one time. today, the best of the reporting is that students are now being bussed to the fairgrounds nearby after evacuating, and getting word there's no more concern that the shooter has been incapacitated. on the screen you see the two buildings that have been of particular note today. snyder hall, and the science build, which doesn't have a name but i right next door, building
12:31 pm
12 and 13. it's snyder hall we're told the shooter entered, went interest a classroom and began firing. the number of dead are all over the 0 place today. the most recent information is from the senate center from the district, who report the best of his information was some 15 to 17 people killed, and as many as 20 injured. but there are reports officially from authorities of at least seven dead. so the fact is they have such a scene that has been so traumatic and so chaotic as described to us by multiple witnesses, so chaotic that they're working to figure out exactly what has happened there before giving us official reports, and until we have those, we'll steer clear of that information except what we brought you already.
12:32 pm
woe don't have information on we have been relying on the reporting of local newspaper and kval television out of eugene, and kvi who have been reporter with reporters on campus and said the lockdown continues. no reason to be concerned about future mayhem, whether they have the identity of this shooter, there in roseburg, oregon, remains to be seen. we have been led to believe a police news conference will be coming shortly. we have been watching this from multiple newsrooms, including from los angeles. trace? >> reporter: it's important to point out, guest you talked material 'er said there were gunshots that were heard from where he was in his vantage point himself was hidden in the back of another building. we heard from other students who say they clearly heard multiple gunshots.
12:33 pm
there was concern that the shooter might have used some kind of silencing device. well, now we know from different students that in fact they did hear multiple gunshots on campus, as we know, and had been reporting, umpqua community college is a gun-free zone and we now at the bottom of the screen tells you, know that k-9 uniting gopher out -- are going out there, and standard procedure you take the dogs and the atf and book squad to check and see if there's any other kind of nefarious device. you go to aurora shooting and other theater shootings we have seen where the shooter tried to back him up or tried to set some other devices in other places. so, the dogs are on campus just to simply make sure there are no other threatening devices or ammunition that's been left on campus by the shooter. we believe the shooter is now in custody. we do not know if he was
12:34 pm
wounded. we do not know what his status is right now. except that they have cleared the building that was next to where the shooting happened. they have also cleared the buildings around snyder hall, and snyder hall appears to be the very focus of where the shooting happened. we have been told it happened in a classroom, and that it may have spilled outside but details are uncertain. six life flight helicopters have taken students away. our information is that only two students were taken by life flight and that at least six students were taken to a local hospital, mercy medical center, which is the main medical facility there in roseburg, and at least five other students were taken to nearby hospitals or the closest trauma centers nearby. so that gives us at least 13 or 14 students transported, the death toll, as you say, all
12:35 pm
across the board, anywhere from seven to 15. our latest source gave us the ten number, ten dead so the death toll is just not been confirmed by anybody on scene. >> trace, back here at headquarters, we're monitoring the reporting of six different television stations, plus newspapers and local radio stations, and just about everyone has different numbers, and frankly, at this moment, the numbers are less important than the larger facts which are that the shooter, whoever he was, has been incapacitated and that authorities are trying to figure out who, what, when, where, and why, that hunting down of active shooters is over. now it's a matter of tending to the injured. we don't know that a total of 12 people -- we don't know the 12 people taken to the hospital were shot. because in many cases the attempt to escape is dangerous
12:36 pm
in and of itself. but we do know that the local hospital there, mercy hospital, has received now nine patients plus three in route, and in fact we believe that those three have arrived. if any of those are life-threatening we don't know. the initial reporting was that six people were believed to be critical. but we know that the local trauma center received but two patients. again, the shooting happened about 10:45 this morning pacific time. , 1:45 on the east coast. the information from the local fire department and emergency response teams was the official word we had there is no longer a reason to fear the shooter. in one way or the other the shooter is no longer able to shoot. depending on which news agencies you believe, and which reporting of trusted reporters, just the information isn't clear, either this person has been taken into
12:37 pm
custody, or as some other reports put it, taken out. the live pictures from the scene are coming in. this is recent video from an intersection not too far from the campus. they're keeping people back, understandably, as the authorities work. they have on enormous crime scene weird. not sure how far it spread. the crime scene is across one classroom and they have multiple vices victims, and they are making sure they have every bit of information they can to ensure that, should this person who committed these acts have been in cahoots with someone else or should someone else have known about his activities, should they have had negative thoughts about persons or this place, making sure that no one else had those thoughts as well no, one else might cause any problems there. so it is a very busy and important day for local authorities as they make sure nobody else wants to do anything
12:38 pm
crazy. and that whatever the motives here, nobody else shared the concerns or shared the thoughts. we were led to believe more than 45 minutes ago the police would come forward and give us specific information. i think the best course of action for us at this moment is to wait for the specific information. i'm monitoring five different sources of information that are coming to us by television, and the information specialists behind me working on print media and local authorities. the moment one of us tells us something further i'll be able to report it to you. meantime, know that many of you are tuning in to find but that this horrific weather situation on the east coast. while we continue to watch oregon and continue with the pictures, there's tremendous amounts of rain on the east coast today and there's a hurricane sitting now the atlantic that frankly the meteorologists can't be sure where it's going. the hope this storm will be -- it's been sitting over the bahamass and spinning at cass
12:39 pm
gore -- cad -- category 3, the maryland governor warned of heavy rains, power outages and quote can, while we're nearing the best we're preparing for the worst. he said that in a news conference. some of the storm models that are must trusted have the storm not hitting anything in the next day or so. you can see ahead of the storm there's plenty of rain but the suggestion is these system might not be heading to the east coast should you drop your guard? absolutely not. there's no way to know where the storm is heading but has strengthed. the waters are very warm around the bahamass. if you look the chain of islands, nassau, the most populated of the islands, is to the north of the center of the storm. certainly getting very wet. but the most damaging of the winds for the south and east of this. there are bahamas islands but
12:40 pm
not heavily populated and largely evacuated because they have been slammed with 130-miles-an-hour winds. the best thinking is the storm will head north and then make a decision later, either to head east or west and on to the united states. also we get new information we'll bring it to you. we have been watching local coverage from roseburg, oregon, where theirs horrific shooting has taken police. somebody entered a college campus and shot up at least one classroom. a large number of people reported dead and injured, some with loin threatening injuries. one from the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, one with a gunshot wound to the chest, 12 others taken to a regional hospital. the college on lockdown, students transferred to a nearby fairground, and authorities working the scene as six

is that right? >> yes. a couple miles north of roseburg north of i-5. >> you're right there. >> yes. >> i can imagine what it's like nor the people in that community. it's difficult for all of us, and we certainly appreciate you filling news and trying to paint a picture for us what is occurring. >> thank you very much. we have heard from washington senator maria cantwell who says my heart breaks -- >> this is kptv. we're monitoring a number of different local stations. what we're waiting for is something official from authorities. critical in no way, just frankly hungry for information. to find out the degree that we can how these kidses are doing, house these people on the campus were taken to local hospitals are doing, what authorities found out about whoever did this, and whether they believe that this was targeted, if this was some sort of domestic situation, that happened to
12:43 pm
spill -- you know, there so-so many scenarios possible. did something have a problem with somebody else and took athlete school and it spread? or was this something bigger that maybe people should know about? we just haven't billion able to get that information from authorities yet. we are lead to believe authorities would have a news conference at noon there on the west coast, which would have been 43 minutes ago. that news conference has delayel stationsers including kval channel 13, which we have been monitoring, they are sitting and waiting locally as we are on the national level. the best of the reporting has come to us over the phone from the local sheriff's department. the biggest news of the day is the shooting is over, the suspect is incapacitated and no reason four further -- for further concern at the college. two people hasn't to the regional trauma center in eugene, one hat a gunshot wound to the chest and one to the back
12:44 pm
butting now further. of you make it to a regional level one trauma center, if you make it there, if your injuries have not taken your life by that point, most a. they're able to repair you. that has been personal experience. what they're able to accomplish is somewhat miraculous, getting a local report from the college, from ke -- kezi. listen. >> the sheriff's of kansas. >> actually they lost the audio there. when kezi gets the reporter back live -- they were getting report by microwave van, and the signal seems to have broken up. they were tracking one audio source and receiving audio from another. so we seek the reporter but couldn't hear her. when we're able to get back there we will. she was reporting from a nearby checkpoint. we are in a hilly area ask they
12:45 pm
set up checkpoints, the campus, this is videotape -- now the reporter is up. lacen. >> i'm here off of highway 99 north, mile tomorrow. the community college. i'll take a step back so you can see the scene here. they still have part of the road blocked off north letting people drive up. but we are seeing a lot of school buses coming down the road. the douglas county sheriff's office wants to tell parents they're busing students to the douglas county fairgrounds and that's where you can be united with children or friends there, but meanwhile, we have a press conference coming up. the sheriff's office official just came to this fire district here and we're being told that we will receive more information very soon. right now we have not confirmed injuries with us yet, but we'll try to get the latest information to you as we can get it. >> from kezi. we got is in while we were
12:46 pm
listening. sergeant aaron dunbar of the roseburg police department just reported officially that all of the shooting involved here today was confined to one classroom this contradicts information we got from officials earlier this was in multiple places but sergeant aaron dunbar of the roseburg police department reported the shooting was confined today to a single classroom, and if that's correct, and there are up weird 20 victims who are system with us, and a number of people who were killed, imagine the scene in that classroom today? with a single gunman and the classroom full of students at a community college just trying to get educated. and today in some cases living through something the rest of us can hardly even imagine. kezi still with live reporting. listen. >> we now have emergency responders from the lane -- the eugene springfield fire district become asked to be on alert, be ready, and some services are
12:47 pm
being required at river bend hospital, sacred heart medical center expecter that's where some of the -- many of the injury are being flown to. we have a crew there gathering information as we get it as well. >> amber did mention that students on campus from the college are being bussed to the douglas county fairgrounds. they're asking you not to go anywhere near the college. >> traffic heavy right now on interstate 5 we're told. traffic on inter state, backed up. we'll be -- get used to -- >> i should tell you, i remember a time -- it wasn't that long ago in the grand scheme of things dish this shot of a scooting at a school was almost unimaginable irremember the day like it was yelled, staning in the newsroom, the afternoon meeting underway in a room when we got the first reports of
12:48 pm
shooting in a town of littleton, colorado, and columbine high school, and the report was something unthinkable, that two young students were making their way throughout the building and shooting students, appeared to be randomly, that there may have been some sort of bomb inside the cafeteria, and at the time it was something that we simply could not imagine and we walked the choppers overhead as we were in a large metropolitan area in denver with some of the greatest photographers in all of the land, and we watched in horror as students came out with hand inside the air and authorities were trying to decide who was a threat and who what not. and those young faces on the morning newscast the next day telling us of all they witnessed and then years and years of learning about columbine and seeing all that it has done to that community and now since then, and city after city and community after community, schools shootings after school shooting and today we find

ourself in the small town of roseburg, oregon, in a small community college, called umpqua, have i've got summon e-mails from the locals saying we're not so small. it's not such a small place. with specifics. 22,000 people in the town and a maximum of 5,000 people on the campus. all i'm saying is it's not a play -- place where most people don't know each other, and today many of them inside one classroom saud a gunman come in and start firing over and over and over again, at least 30 rounds according to multiple witnesses. some students survived and have been taken to local area hospitals, and regional trauma centers. others shot and killed in that classroom today. we're waiting for the official reporting on camera or otherwise from authorities. so far today two official reports and they are one sentence long: the first from the local fire department which says: the shooting is over no reason for further concern. the second which we just got moments ago that all of the
12:50 pm
shooting was confined to the one classroom. experience tells me that over time we'll learn that some of the early reporting was wrong, that some of the facts and details were just bigger than the people who saw them and then were reporting them were able to process. sometimes in the heat of an instance where is unimaginable you can't keep up with what your mind is taking in and we'll forgive that as we wait for a news conference that should be coming shortly. the local hospitals have been keeping in touch with us as best they can, and most recently we have been told that a regional hospital there in the nearby town of springfield, has received 12 patients. that hospital would normally not receive patients with life-threatening injuries, gunshot wounds to parts of the body that might take their lives. those be taken by helicopter or

others to a nearby trauma center where they're better capable of handling the kind of injuries that might cause end of life. now from "the oregonian" live.com. a worm named laurie anders, who is 57, and lives across the street from at the campus, she was sitting on her back porch when she heard self shots and then there'd cop car after cop car started flooding the area. ambulances are still coming com, she said, at 11:45. so that would have been just about an hour ago. cops are still coming in. she estimated roughly 20 ambulances and police officers in private vehicles pouring into the area. officials were not allowing students to leave the camp pulse at that time in their own vehicles and they were busing them out. this jibes with off the information we have gotten. the students required to leave their cars on campus. it's possible this is a larger

crime escape. if sergeant dunbar is right and this is analogy one classroom, that doesn't mean that's the end of the crime scene. they want to track this person's movement from however he got to campus, whether he walked or took port angeles transportation, taxi or his own vehicle, they want to track the movement so the crimen scene could extend past the building and trying to keep students and everybody else from around it. begin, continuing the quotes from laurie andrews, 57, who lives across the street, and i'm quoting: everybody is in shock. very, very shocked. and who wouldn't be of what they witnessed in the town of roseburg today, or south of it on campus of umpqua community college. the suspected shooting at the college in oregon is man in his late 20s in. that's the reporting of a rival news network and that is what cnn is reporting. not something i would normally quote but coming across on
12:53 pm
reuters news wire and i read it before i realized i was a cnn quote man. in his late 20s. we don't know who he was or if he had affiliation to the college whether he was if a do ground -- disgruntled student or faculty member. we have no information at all about motive. we are about two hours into the reporting of this now. and no students have tweeted out possible scenarios. no one has been speculating with any authority about exactly what went down here, and two hours after the fact, in our age of socially connectivity, we really know almost nothing about what happened there except that it was confined to this one classroom, and that now counselors are available for ucc students, staff and families. the douglas county sheriff's office tweeted a minute ago, the counselors are available at the douglas county fairgrounds what
12:54 pm
what they call douglas hall of it's our belief all the ones in the original classroom have been transported. these are the first live aerials now. these from kptv and first on fox this afternoon. live pictures of the campus, and it all starting to look familiar. snyder hail on the left. the science building, all of these cars here and the entrance to the campus here. so is a step back for a moment, this is the science building, and this is where we are -- have been led to believe all day this happened. the sergeant from the local police department in roseburg, says that all the shooting was confined to one room, one classroom in that building. this is from a regional television station or this pictures were, so their chopper signal -- it's a long way away and getting the chopper signal is difficult. one of the challenges of covering local us? in areas not very near a big
12:55 pm
city. for instance, i mentioned come columbine, littleton, might as well be denver. that's not the case here. you can see authorities -- these are live pictures -- i don't know what kind of authorities those are, except to say they appear to be in uniform, and some of the entrances you can see the crime tape. that has strung around here, whether any of these vehicles particularly are part of this crime scene. no way to know but you can see it's been roped off, large area roped off. they want to preserve any sort of evidence possible and you can see the crime tape. we're two hours into this so we can presume now that authorities have some idea what they're dealing with. most like we have been led to believe by the reporting of another network they at least know the age of this person. i don't know if it's a student. i have no idea. but we have a relative age of this person if that reporting is accurate but beyond that we
12:56 pm
don't know anything. this shooter have some sort of connection to the college? have classes here? we don't know. it's possible authorities do. after all if they were able to identify the person they have been age to speak with friends and colleagues can family members. might be haye able to have information from his facebook or twitter powes, might have given information but there is a reason that they've cordon odd eave -- we have a broader look. you seek the crime tape goes around the main area. i'm unsure exactly what that particular building is. that's the science building. that's the science building we have been talking about. the name of the hall? snyder hall. snyder hall, which is where we believe all of this started. again, the reporting of the roseburg police sergeant is it was all in run classroom but flies in the face of other information we have. the oregon attorney general now
12:57 pm
told the portland nbc affiliate that 13 people are confirmed dead. that is from the oregon attorney general, speaking to a portland television station, and confirming now at three minutes before 1:00 in the afternoon, west coast time, that 13 people are confirmed dead at umpqua community college, that word coming to news the last few seconds. the live pictures from the college have been coming and going as they're working to get aerial coverage from the scene. this is videotape from just a couple of moments ago. you can see that the campus, the center of the campus, has been cordoned off. again, the attorney general has given us further information. the attorney general few reports the shooter is dead. the shooter who wreaked havoc and went on a shooting rampage today at umpqua community college outside roseburg, oregon, has been shot orer is dead. we don't know by what means, whether this shooter took his
12:58 pm
own life or whether authorities took him down but the oregon attorney general just told a television station in ported that 13 people are dead and the shooter is dead. if the shooter is dead it's possible authorities have been able to get more information. authorities are out with k-9 units. there's one right there, and this seems to be the center of activity here for authorities. the whole center of this campus -- it's all built around this center fountain here and it's been wore donned -- cordoned off. and all over their kaz are still in the parking lot. they're trying to keep everyone away from any area where the shooter is believed to have been. at any point during the day. again, this began sometime between -- the best number that we have been given is 10:58
12:59 pm
al-pacific daylight time so 10:38 local time, when the first call came in there was a shooter on campus here at umpqua community college. we're now two and a half hours past that. and the latest word is from the oregon state attorney general that the shooter is dead and 13 people have been killed in this massacre at umpqua community college. we know at least 14 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least two people have been severely injured, critically injured, one with a gunshot wound to the chest, one with a gunshot wound to the back, and now we can see that the dogs are circling car after car after car. normally this would mean they're making sure there's no more danger or bombs. no more danger to any of the people who have been so traumatized today. our coverage will continue throughout the afternoon and evening. as this part of oregon has been
1:00 pm
certainly forever changed. when breaking news happens we'll break in. our coverage continues now we "your world" with neil cavuto. this is fox news channel. >> thank you, shepard. little more than a couple of hours ago, much otherwise the country was focused on a storm that was brew us off the coast, and one that we're told is gone up to category 4 could be life-threatening. then all eyes turned west to this small community in oregon where we are just learning now at least a dozen people might have been killed in what seems to be sage act of violence in a single classroom. there is so much we do not know. what we do know is that it has happened in an otherwise idyllic community little a more than a couple hours from portland, oregon, roseburg,
