vigil on campus last night. the gunmen is 26-year-old chris harper mercer. his apart. sealed off as police try to figure out a motive to the massacre. william lajeunesse is live with more from roseburg. >> the students came here for a better life not to lose it. yesterday around 10:40 in the morning chris harper mercer walked into a creative writing class and began shooting. he had three hand guns and one rifle. he killed nine other students and injured seven. one student was in a classroom nearby. here's what she had to say. >> the look on their faces was horrifying. i don't know. it is hard to explain. when she looked at us.

she said we have to get out now. one said we have to get out now. we began running. >> the campus has around 13,000 students. 3,000 full-time. one security guard who does not carry a gun but he carries mace. the 911 calls came n-deputies responded. two officers unlike columbine immediately confronted the gunman and shot mercer dead. the campus was on lock down. they let the students board a bus where they were reunited with family. >> you will never hear mere mention his name. we would encourage media and the community to avoid using it. we encourage you to not repeat it. we encourage you not to glorify and create sensationalism for

person asking them to state their religion. one woman tweeted on behalf of her grandmother who was inside one of the classrooms. the shooter was lying people up and asking if they were christians if they said yes they were shot in the head if they said no or didn't answer they were shot in the legs. >> this person goes on to say she was in the room and anyway she escaped being shot at all. i don't know how it gets worse unless you hear this kind of a motive. >> a fathmother who's son was s in the hand the gunman asked people, do you have god. then went on to say this won't hurt much. >> i think in this instance it gives you a window into at least a small portion of this suspect's anger was certainly for christians. it is an important part of the puzzle. i think that's what they are

residents are not taking any chances. they are already preparing for the bad weather. >> we have team coverage on the hurricane this morning. maria molina is in seaside heights, new jersey. good morning, maria. >> good morning heather and ainsley. we continue to track it. they are lashing the bahamas with category 4 hurricane sustained winds. winds at 130 miles an hour and it is a very slow mover. it has been stationary across the central bahamas and we have been dealing with life threatening conditions out there. that will continue through you tell oh the day. you are talking about a period about 24-hours bahamas have been looking at impacts from very, very powerful and dangerous hurricanes and the storm is to intensify today reaching winds of 140 miles per hour. that will be something to watch.

as we head into later today and saturday the storm will finally move away from the bahamas. the computer nmodels are agreeig on the forecast track of the storm. many keeping the storm away from the east coast of the u.s., so that is very well come news. we are looking at the confidence increasing in the storm. the result of the forecast models now shifting the cone away from the u.s. that said we will still be dealing with the impact. we have coastal flood advisories and warnings in effect across the coast in the mid atlantic and northeast and further off to the south. we are dealing with heavy rain in the forecast across the carolinas potentially historic flooding across south karp line gnaw. it this is a big story and we will keep a close watch on that. new jersey governor chris christie declaring a state of emergency as hurricane joaquin eyes the east coast.

the storm picking up strength and threatening several states with massive flooding and 130 miles per hour wind. doug luzader is in virginia. that's where a state of emergency is in effect today. good morning, doug. >> reporter: good morning. you see it's raining at the moment. this is not rain from joaquin, though. this under scores the problem here. these areas are so soaked to begin with, that anything additional from the hurricane could cause significant flooding. it does appear that joaquin is tracking farther and farther to the east. that may not be the factor that we initially thought that it was. if the winds begin to pick up and drive some of this water farther inland, they could be looking at significant flooding events. >> we're going to have a rain event regardless. we're estimated 4 to 12 inches of rain. it will depend on how fast it rains, where it rains and the fact -- if the flooding will
