then, i decided to have my dna tested through ancestry dna. it turns out i'm scottish. so, i traded in my lederhosen for a kilt. julie is up next with "fox report." we start tonight with a fox news weather alert. folks along the east coast battling a historic amount of rain as the coast guard searches for a ship lost in hurricane joaquin. i'm julie banderas. welcome. the u.s. isn't expected to see anything like this but the threat of major flooding here at home is still very real. severe weather alerts now in effect from georgia to new england. south carolina already seeing record breaking flooding. meanwhile, a major search under way right now and it continues for a krg ship missing in hurricane joaquin. 33 people on board, including 28 americans. the crew made a mayday report of

the ship listing and lost contract between florida and puerto rico. we have fox team coverage for you. we're tracking the storm from the fox extreme weather center but first brian is live with the latest on the missing cargo ship. where does the search stand right now? >> the coast guard says the search planes in the air at this hour looking for any sign of the cargo ship and its 33 missing crew members. the coast guard sending two c-130s this morning as well as a helicopter and a u.s. navy and air force also assisting with the p-8 reconnaissance plane. the search could go into tonight but that all depends on the weather. they're flying at just 1,000 feet above the water near the eye of hurricane joaquin. there are over 40-foot waves, low visibility and hurricane winds. the coast guard searching 850 square nautical miles yesterday alone. the ship left jacksonville, florida, tuesday enroute to san

juan, puerto rico. thursday, a distress call indicated it lost power. it was leaning and all the flooding had been contained according to the distress call. the ship has not been heard from since. it's last known location nook the crooked island in the bahamas. this image shows a white arrow as the approximate last location of the ship. the ship missing in the middle of hurricane joaquin as a category 4 storm. the coast guard fearing it is disabled near the eye of the storm where there were 20 to 30-foot waves and heavy winds and could have destroyed the ship's communications and the search as i said continuing. >> any idea why the ship was out at sea in the first place? >> is t ship's company saying why they were out there in the first place and saying it's a first question on people's mind and how can they have been sent out to sea knowing that a major hurricane was forming off the coast of florida. the cargo ship's company said

they gave the go-ahead to sail despite the weather confident the crew could handle changing weather situations. >> captain in this case had been monitoring the track of this tropical storm for a number of days prior to departing. >> remember, the storm was a tropical storm tuesday when it departed. still family me believes of 28 americans and 5 polish citizens on board say that's not a good enough explanation. >> we just want answers and we want that ship home. this is unacceptable. the answers are not sharp enough. they don't know where the ship is. we just want our husband and dad home. >> and that is a big question. where is the ship? where are the 2 -- 33? >> thank you very much. >> no problem. president obama meantime declaring a state of emergency in south carolina where major

flooding from hurricane joaquin is already wreaking havoc. rescuing homeowners and drivers stranded and the governor nikki haley warning it only is going to get worse. >> we are about to go through something we have never gone through before. we are going to see rainfall at historic levels. >> the east coast could see heavy rain through monday morning. meteorologist janice dean live with the very latest tracking for us. hey there. >> hi, julie. we are watching a power storm. category 4. at one point close to a category 5 status. 155-mile-per-hour sustained winds at the peak. now 150 miles per hour. and it's moving quickly northeast at 17 miles per hour. finally away from the bahamas and you can see the tropical moisture feed because we have this hurricane and then we have a cutoff low off the southeast coast and this moisture is being funneled right in to the southeast coastline and that's

why we're seeing historic amounts of ranlfall over south carolina, up towards north carolina. as far as the hurricane track goes, away from the u.s. coast. we have to watch bermuda. tomorrow into monday as it comes very close to bermuda. otherwise, making a very quick northeast turn over the next several days. flood advisories and you can see all of that moisture again funneled into south carolina as well as north carolina. and we have flood advisories, flash flood warnings more importantly along the coast here for charleston where we have, again, record setting floods in some cases i've seen totals surpassing 15 inches with more on the way so that's the estimated precipitation again for the carolinas along the coast. we are dealing with a life threatening situation here. here's some of the totals we have seen. 16 inches, little river. north myrtle beach close to 16 inches. again, more rain is in the forecast.

we're also seeing battering winds. 20, 30 miles per hour. wind gusts on shore. so beach erosion, high waves, high surf is going to continue not only for the southeast coast, parts of florida and all the way up to coastal new england through sunday. coastal flooding, beach erosion and people urged to stay out of the water. it's going to be, again, potentially a life threatening situation. on shore winds will continue saturday, sunday into monday as we watch the storm come very close to bermuda. again, they could be dealing with hurricane force winds this time tomorrow evening. back to you, julie. >> all right. thank you very much. >> okay. right now, new details on the possible air strike own a doctors without borders facility in afghanistan. that killed at least 19 people. tonight claims the taliban hunkered down at the site. one nurse at the hospital described explosions and said at one point he saw patients burning alive.

the hospital is in an area that has seen some intense fighting in recent days. the city of kunduz. it was briefly captured by the taliban earlier this week. general john campbell commanding the u.s. forces in afghanistan confirms the u.s. did conduct an air strike near the hospital to support american troops being shot at adding we continue to advise and assist the afghan partners as they clear the city of kunduz and surrounding areas of insurgents. we'll take all reasonable steps to protect civilians from harm. molly hanaburg is live tonight. what are we hearing from the group? >> a medical group calls it a quote horrific loss of life. and says coalition officials in washington and in kabul had been informed, given the gps coordinates even, of the location of this hospital in kunduz in northern afghanistan

to try the avoid being caught up in battle. here's what the group's director of operations in belgium said today. >> so what's happened is that one airplane came around, five times, with very precise bombings every time on the same building so this none of the other buildings were touched. so we believe that this is a very high-tech aerial bombardment of our hospital with all the horrible consequences we have seen. for this reason we ask now a clear explanation of the coalition forces and independent inquiry that is fully transparent to us. >> at this point, doctors without borders says 12 staff members and at least 7 patients including 3 children were killed. 37 people were injured. julie? >> molly, has the obama administration commented on the air strike? >> defense secretary ash carter called it a quote tragic

incident and went on to say in a statement, quote, the area is the scene of intense fighting the last few days. u.s. forces in support of afghan security forces were operating nearby. as were taliban fighters. while we are still trying to determine exactly what happened, i want to extend my thoughts and prayers to everyone affected. a senior u.s. defense official tells fox that the taliban guarded the hospital and drew u.s. special forces into a fire fight near the hospital. u.s. forces called in an air strike because they were under fire and needed cover. this official says the taliban used the hospital as a base and used civilians there as human shields. fox news has learned that a one-star general has been sent from kabul to kunduz to investigate this air strike. julie? >> so tragic. molly, thank you so much. get the latest on the top two stories, the air strike in afghanistan and the search for the missing container ship tonight on justice with judge janine. the live coverage at 9:00 p.m.

eastern here on the fox news channel. we are now learning the names of six service members who died when a u.s. cargo plane crashed this week in eastern afghanistan. they were six airmen, all assigned to the 455th air expeditionary wing. a special ceremony held to remember them at bagram airfield earlier today. the commanding officer says they served honorably and calls their loss a real blow. they are identified as captain jordan pierceson, captain jonathan golden, staff sergeant ryan hammond, senior airman nathan sartain and airman first class kcey ruse and senior airman quinn johnson-harris. tonight we are learning more about the nine victims of the shooting at an oregon community college, including two related to first responders in the community. >> however, it is with great sadness that we learn that our

firefighter lost his son on that day and our ems paramedic mcfadden lost his niece on that day. >> police also releasing new details about the gunman and how he died. plus, a manhunt under way right now in texas. a woman wanted for hiring a hit man to kill a dentist. >> well, i will suggest to her specifically is she turn herself in as quickly as possible. she is a fugitive wanted at this time for capital murder.

years old. one of them a teacher. another the son of a firefighter. all of them irreplaceable in the hearts of the people they left behind. >> found out that the -- there had been a shooting and it had happened in the writing glass. my son was in the writing glass. i knew he was in the writing class when i found that out i -- i just prayed that he was all right. that morning he was happy and carefree and i love you, mom. see you later. and he never came home. he never will again. >> pam springer reporting from roseburg, oregon, tonight. dan, what did we learn on the investigation today? >> reporter: well, we learned today from police as they revealed that the mass killer who brought six weapons to the school on thursday morning turned one on himself and actually killed himself as he was involved in a gun fight with

several police officers. it all went down very quickly, julie. 10:38 a.m., first 911 call. 10:44, two roseburg police officers and a state trooper arrive on the scene. 10:46, just two minutes later, engaged in a shootout. 10:48, the suspect is down and the rush to get the victims treatment begins. >> there is no doubt that the exceptional patient care and the proficient use of lifesaving measures saved lives that day. >> reporter: and nine people were also critically injured in that shooting. in fact, nine were killed. nine injured. three of them still critical in the hospital. julie? >> how do people there in roseburg, dan, feel about, i guess, thrust into the latest gun control debate that, unfortunately, arises after every school shooting? >> reporter: yeah. they seem to be arriving more rapidly after every one of these

shootings. almost all of the people that i've spoken with really support gun rights and hate the fact there are people talking about, you know, stronger gun laws and the need for stronger gun laws. they want all the focus to be on the victims. that's what's happening here. there was a big area blood drive yesterday, hundreds showed up. it was a big show of support. this is an old timber town, conservative with a lot of support for the right to bear arms and a dislike for the president obama's early remarks about the need for more gun control. >> it's about healing. as far as nationally, i just don't think it's appropriate for people in the federal office level to be talking about this from a policy side of things until at least a few days, a week goes by. i mean, you just can't exploit people's tragedy like that. >> reporter: most people at least here believe the best way to stop the campus killings is more students and faculty who can protect themselves with weapons. julie? >> dan, what do we know about a

possible package from the shooter? there was word of a victim in the hospital telling a parent, in fact, that the shooter had, in fact, given them a box, somebody in the classroom was handed a box by the shooter. >> reporter: yeah. we are hearing more about the exact timeline of what happened inside that classroom. and apparently the desire of this madman for some infamy. we are hearing from some of the people who were inside that he wrote down a note, put in it an envelope and handed to a student and separated that person from the group so he could give the story to the authorities. we get that description from 16-year-old cheyenne fitzgerald's mother. she is a nursing student and lost a kidney in the shooting and witnessed the bizarre behavior. and we'll send it back to you, julie. >> dan, thank you very much in oregon tonight. we apologize for not having that

sound on tape for you. developments in a bizarre murder case. police now searching for a woman who may have hired a hit man to kill a dentist in dallas. the story made national headlines after someone shot 35-year-old kendra hatcher. authorities now are charging this man christopher love with capital murder. they say they found what is believed to be the murder weapon when they arrested him. police also say this woman, brenda delgado hired him because she was apparently jealous of the victim. the victim reportedly dating the suspect's ex-boyfriend. americans battening down the hatches tonight in the face of some historic weather. coming up, we'll take you inside a new kind of home that researchers say is storm proof. plus, a live report from the coast. garrett? >> the winds are picking up here in virginia beach and the record

it is a familiar site in hurricane season. people filling up sandbags, boarding up houses and bracing for the worst mother nature has to offer but now researchers are introducing a new kind of home they say is hurricane proof. douglas kennedy has more. >> we were standing out here. >> reporter: three years ago, john was in the house on staten island and superstorm sandy blew through it with gusts up to 100 miles per hour. >> but it wasn't the wind that wrecked your home. >> no. the wind did not wreck our home. what it was was the surge of water that came into this area. >> reporter: sandy, in fact, damaged or destroyed more than 650,000 homes. with most of the destruction coming from storm surge. exactly what inspired john from the stephen institute of technology to create the sure house. the sure house is designed with

just for the night. 33 people were on board that ship including 28 americans. the crew made a mayday call and said the ship was listing before losing contact enroute from florida to puerto rico. hurricane joaquin is moving out of the area which raises some hope that the ship will be found. the captain is the coast guard's seventh district chief of response. thank you so much, captain, for talking to us. >> you're welcome. >> tell us when's going on right now on the search. >> so right now we stopped the flights overnight because the weather conditions are still pretty severe in the area. our search efforts are much more effective in the daylight. tomorrow morning we plan to have a c-130 aircraft out there including one from the air force. we'll have also a navy p-8 aircraft, sophisticated aircraft with a great surface search radar to look for the vessel. one new development we have had, though, is earlier today we

located a life ring from the vessel. we were able to recover it. this life ring was approximately 70 miles to the northeast of the last known position of the vessel that was reported to us thursday morning. so what this does is validates the search efforts and now able to kind of recalibrate around that and try to look for the vessel or signs of the vessel or survivors in the water. >> this map we're showing the people at home is the crooked island and the last location. you made news here mentioning the fact that a life ring was found. a life ring is a need until a haystack compared to what you're looking for and 700-plus foot long ship carrying hundreds of pounds of cargo and trucks and cars. at this point in your search, what hope do you believe is left that these crew members will be found? >> we are still hopeful.

however, we were disappointed that we didn't find the vessel today. however, the search conditions have been pretty intense. even as the storm moves out of the area. one of the c-130 aircraft flew within 50 nautical miles of the eye of the storm today and experiencing 100-mile-per-a winds. quarter mile visibility and 40-foot seas. they came become and some of the interior panels had fallen down. they were beaten up pretty bad. so even though we have covered a pretty wide area and including the last known position of the vessel, the search conditions are very difficult and challenging but hopefully that will improve over the next few days. >> you have coast guard ships equipped to lift and turn over on its side and go back up. i have family that had been in the coast guard before. this ship is not e quaped to do that. if this thing were to list 15 degrees and actually topple over, the chances are it's not going to go back upright. is that correct? >> right.

the ship is not designed to do that. and we do have some of the vessel that is you are talking about self-righting and come back up. but in this situation, we are not using those type of ships and certainly a container vessel is not built to do this. >> it did take on water when it was last heard from? they remedied that situation an you explained to me some of the water intake through the hatches and talking 20 to 30-foot seas at the time the ship was last heard from. 100-mile-per-hour winds and the vessel out of control pounded from every side in the most dangerous way being hit broadside by a wave and could easily capsize a vessel of this size despite the cargo and the weight. is that correct? >> that is correct. the vessel in a very, very vulnerable position as it just sat, disabled without propulsion and listing. so even though it's 737 feet long, it was in a very vulnerable position at that point. >> our thoughts and prayers are

for those crew an their families as i know they await word tonight. captain mark fedor, thank you. >> thank you. all right, flood advises up and down the east coast as americans deal with torrential rain. roads turning into rivers and called a slow motion disaster of historic proportions. garrett tenny is live. how much rainfall has hit the region? >> reporter: the national weather service is calling it a once in 200-years rainfall event. in south carolina, it is the area hit the hardest. in charleston, in the last 18 hours alone, this storm dumped 6 inches of rain after almost constant rainfall for several days. police blocked off roads in and out of the city to keep traffic going in there. earlier today, in brunswick, nk

intersection, evacuations of people from their homes due to heavy flding and rising waters after other families were evacuated last night nearby, as well. in the last three days, though, south carolina has received more rain than it normally does in the entire season. with that much rain, it is not just flooding this officials are worried about now. there's a higher risk of roadways to be washed out as well as landslides both on the coast as well as inland, as well. this afternoon, president obama signed a declaration -- disaster declaration for south carolina to start to get help there, as well, julie. >> the flooding is only going to get worse tomorrow i understand. is that correct? >> reporter: yeah. more rain is expected tomorrow. all along the mid-atlantic coast and officials said that there's nowhere for the rain to go. the riverways are completely full. lakes are full. the ground is just so saturated

that there's going to be more flooding. you can see here in virginia beach, just with the high tides that we have been seeing here with that increased water all around the area, the beaches are just getting wiped out with these waves, pounding there along with the high winds and beach erosion is a concern along the coast, as well. folks up and down the mid-atlantic coast now are just bracing for the next several days hoping to make it through. julie? >> garrett, thank you very much. turning to politics now. fox news, of course srks america's election headquarters and donald trump weighing in on the debate over gun control. during a campaign stop in tennessee. take a listen. >> the 2nd amendment to our constitution's clear. the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon. period. period. >> trump not the only one weighing in. kristen fisher has more from

washington. kristen? >> reporter: the one issue of almost every presidential candidate is gun control after the mass shooting in oregon. >> taking guns away does not solve this problem. thomas jefferson way back then said the only people who are hurt when we take guns away are the law-abiding citizens. >> political calls after a shooting are not being made rationally. it's emotionally. >> reporter: jeb bush is taking the most heat after a comment he made on the campaign trail yesterday. here it is. >> look. stuff happens. the's always a crisis and impulse to do something and not necessarily the right thing to do. >> reporter: at the same time, a new poll shows bush taking a sharp dive with just 4% of the vote. ted cruz is now two points ahead of him. rubio and fiorina are tied for third. ben carson in second and donald trump on top with 25% of the vote. on the democratic side, tonight, the vice president who still hasn't said if he's running the keynote speaker at annual dinner

for the human rights campaign but earlier clinton's turn and used platform to attack republican rivals. >> we will face some ridiculousness, especially from our friends in the gop. in fact, it's already begun. ben carson says that marriage equality is what caused the fall of the roman empire. >> reporter: tonight, clinton's expected to make a season on "saturday night live" before heading to new hampshire next week. julie? >> thank you. a brand new pew research poll finding majority of republicans prefer a candidate with new ideas over experience. take a look at this. by a more than 2 to 1 margin, republicans voters saying they're having fresh ideas and thinking that's much more important than a political record. so that leads to our question of the day. with jeb bush and hillary clinton dropping in the polls, do you think any career politician could do well?
