"fox & friends" begins right now. all right. we begin this hour with an extreme weather alert. deadly flash flooding in south carolina. a night of powerful downpours in charleston. just look at that. roads turned into rivers. neighbors forced out of their

homes. president obama declaring state of emergency and ordering federal aid to that area. >> five weather related deaths have been reported along the east coast but the u.s. is being spared the full fury of hurricane joaquin. >> and coast guards are searching for a cargo ship. >> 33 people majority americans on board the ship when it vanished on thursday. the company owning that ship still holding out hope. >> there's really a strong sense of family, of closeness that you see in this community of mariners that we're a part of and a great sense of hope and optimism. >> the life ring was found 75 miles away from the ship's last known location. it means they are looking in the right place. we're tracking both storms and we have a look what to expect today. why was this ship there in the first place

>> that's one thing. when you think about what the seas were like at that time, you find a life ring in the right area. imagine how far that thing can drift when you have 130 mile-per-hour winds. we're still dealing with waves. that's where we have hurricane joaquin getting close to bermuda. down in the bahama chain the waters will do much better today and a good day for searching. i think they will be able to get a lot of work done on that. we're still watching the storm. we still have a tropical feed from joaquin and still directly in south carolina. areas around charleston county 12 to 18 inches of rain since this started yesterday morning into friday night. we're talking about all kinds of records broken as far as all time rainfall events but continue to see this flooding. we have more rain coming here throughout the day today. in fact, some really significant rainfall totals still to come.

we'll see some areas likely another eight to ten inches of rain. we're not done with this until really monday evening. it's finally all out of there. we still have more rain, flooding going on and as we speak right now there's all kind of water rescues going on across the state. you have to stay inside if you can unless you've been evacuated. very dangerous situation continuing. "saturday night live" has returned to television. new season started last night. political year and it was a very political show. include appearance of hillary clinton and imitation of donald trump. >> donald, he's so smart, so good with the media. he knows if he says the craziest things he'll go up in the poll numbers. >> no, no that's just not true. i don't just say outrageous things for poll numbers i speak from my heart. >> i hear your numbers are going down this week.

search crews battling extreme weather conditions of hurricane joaquin. they found a life ring from the missing el faro cargo ship. but the crew has not been found. what happened and is there hope of fining any of the crew alive? joining us now is captain of his own offshore research vessel, tim taylor. great to see you. so, a ship like this over 700 feet long seems like it would be

invulnerable against a storm like this but these ships can go fast. >> these ships are carrying massive weight cargo. this ship is as big as the "titanic." but they lost control. they losteerage. they had engine failures for whatever reason. that's not clear as of yet. water intake. if they lost their steerage and can't steer into the sea and control the ship they are at the mercy of the weather. >> one message received by the coast guard we're taking on water we think we're under control but then nothing else. that suggests something happened and happened fast. how quickly could that happen? >> in nanosecond. it changes the center of gravity of the ship and it keeps going and that can be catastrophic. >> this has happened before. how likely is it that a capsized

event like that is survivable? >> it's survivable but generally if they are mustering to a station to abandon ship the 33 crew are gathering to get in lifeboats. it happened so fast they were all in their work areas, whether engineering or at the helm or wherever they are on the ship, survival is less likely because they have to get out of the ship and up to the top. >> if you're below deck you're in trouble. what's the process of getting off. the lifeboats are not like the ones from the "titanic." >> they are not the deployable type. some vessels you get into, totally sealed and launch off the ship automatically. these look like you have to lower them down. there has to be some physical effort. if you're in the middle of heavy winds and seas which changes the characteristics, you may not be able to use one side or the

scary that looks. those are cars completely submerged and people still trying to drive through sway bad idea. in many cases you get stuck and then weighed out through that which is very bad. you can see it's windy along with this. wind not necessarily from joaquin but wins nonetheless up to 15 to 30 miles per hour. major problems there. take a listen to what one woman had to say as she was trying to get to work a block away. >> i have lived here for 15 years and never seen that before. i'm trying to make to it the hospital. i'm a fellow at the hospital. i live one block that way. i tried to come this way and the water was up to my waist. >> so you're trying to get to hospital. people trying to get to the hospital to work. it gives you and idea how dangerous this is. if you can at all, you need to stay home. we still have more rain being funneled in here. incredibly heavy rain.

flash flooding concerns going on especially this morning along interstate 26. stay off that if at all possible. take a look at this. still some spots here those darker areas 10 to 12 inches of rain up to myrtle beach it will target today. >> side streets and main roadways washed out could be a long time before folks can get out. >> wow. thanks a lot. we've got news from new york city this morning. mayor bill de blasio, his administration has ordered all museums in the city to fill out detailed racial and ethnic diversity stats on forms. they have to explain to the city the color of the people who work at the museums and if they fail to do this they don't get funded. >> this process that they are going through is costing $150,000. it's private funding. think about what that money could have gone to instead? how about adding to the arts community and bettering the exhibits or adding to education

programs for children there. >> this is absolutely happening, i spoke to a high level member of one local museum here in manhattan who said that it's actually beyond that. the culture at the museums is such that if we put up a painting from a white person in one of these galleries we have to think about the implication of hanging a painting by a minority artist next to that painting just so somebody wouldn't be offended when they look at a painting from a white artist. >> this is happening at every level of the government and state of the union. the federal government requires their contractors to do that. why is this a bad idea? when the government takes account of people's race they can't help but treat people differently? government is not allowed to treat people differently because of their race. new york falling apart? people sleeping on the streets.

some of the harder hit areas this morning. what do you make of it? >> i want to go back on one thing for the forecast for the bahamas. it was a difficult forecast. you heard us talking about this. many of the models did not show the storm going as far south as the bahamas wi. there is a possibility they thought the storm wasn't going to go as far south as it did. >> it wasn't obvious? >> it wasn't obvious. >> and at that time it was tropical storm? >> it went from a tropical storm to a cat 3 hurricane in 24 hours. it changed quickly. the one thing that's certain all along is the rain that we're going to see across south carolina. these are some of the 24-hour rainfall totals, almost 18 inches in charleston county, myrtle beach, 15.5 inches. these are totals not done yet. take a look at the video out of the area.

you know, you think about south carolina, they do get tropical storms, they get hurricanes, incredible summer rain storms and this storm here is breaking all kinds of records for rainfall. and you see what happens. you get waist deep water that so many people are having to get through. take a listen to what the mayor had to say about their effort there. >> what we want to do is help people get through these next two days with no one getting hurt, and being safe. this is a very serious situation. >> and i will say, because the forecast for this spot, this storm was so kind of spot on for a number of days, i think certainly some of those numbers are going to be kept down as far as damage that you might see there. rain still going in. we probably still have some spots dotoday from this line of storms, might see another 12 inch of rains.

"fox and friends" hour three begins right now. we begin with an extreme weather alert and two stories developing. south carolina is in the middle of deadly flash flooding there and president obama dough clarg a state of emergency as heavy rainfall turns roads into rivers. >> first another fox alert. a desperate search under way for the cargo ship that went missing and vanished near the bahamas in hurricane joaquin on thursday. 28 americans were on board the "el faro" when it disappeared. this morning we know that rescuers just discovered a life ring from that ship floating about 70 miles away. >> joining us now with the latest on the rescue efforts is the united states coast guard's

seventh district chief of response, captain mark fador. welcome back the show this morning. we appreciate you joining us again. we know you have a busy morning ahead of you. that life ring that you with discovered, was does that tell you about your rescue operation? >> what it tells us is it was located 70 miles to the northeast of the vessel of last known position, so we were expecting anything of the vessel to drift that way, so it validates our search efforts. so what we're about to do is today is recalibrate our search effort and look in the most probable places where the vessel could be located. what we're doing is with very three c-130 aircraft that are going to be flying this morning, including one from the air force, and we also have a navy p-8 aircraft. it's very -- has a very sophisticated surface search radar and what we're going to do with that aircraft specifically is we're going to fly from the vessel's last known position as close as possible to the hurricane itself. joaquin is still out there. then come back.

and that should give us a good idea of whether that vessel is still out there. >> we know that wind and rain are complicating your search efforts. do you have the capabilities, the technology to be able to work through the night, too, since finding this life ring or are you having to wait up till the sun came up this morning? >> we are really focusing our efforts during daylight hours because that's when we're most effective. yesterday as an example, we were able for the first time to get near the vessel of last known position and one of our c-130 aircraft was within 50 miles of the eye of the storm. but the search conditions were still so challenging. they were experiencing 100 mile an hour winds, sea conditions were about 40 feet and they only had a quarter nautical mile of visibility at that point. even though we were within the vessel's last known position the search conditions were still very challenging. >> are you expecting to find a ship or a life raft? >> we hope by the end of the day today if the ship is out there, today is our best chance to find it. we are going to look for any

signs of survivors or the vessel itself. >> you have been doing a remarkable job. we spoke to the wife of one of the missing crew members of that ship. she said you're working tirelessly and thanked you for your service. it's remarkable 70 miles away you found a life ring in this crazy clouds and storms. i mean, from that high up, you see a life ring. does that trouble you, though, that you don't find any other debris at this time? >> it does. we were frustrated that we did not find the vessel yesterday. and again, today, today is our best chance and what we've been doing is, the normal hurricane hunter aircraft that fly through these storms fly at about 10,000 feet. yesterday, we were able to get our vessel -- our aircraft down to 1,000 feet and even another one down to 500 feet to try to give us the best chance to locate that vessel or any signs of survivors or anything else. that puts our crews in a dangerous position. >> yeah. >> that's what we get trained to do and that's what we want to

do. if there is a potential to save a life we're going to do what's necessary. >> 500 feet. you guys are really brave. i think that's the headline here. that's unbelievable. thanks, captain. >> thanks for the update. >> you're welcome. now back to the eastern seaboard where our neighbors in south carolina waking up to another dangerous day of rain and flooding. the storm already being blamed for three deaths in the state. a total of five up and down the east coast. rick has been following this closely and has the latest this morning. >> they've got the rain, all the coasts up and down the seaboard being battered and beaches being destroyed. it's a good thing it's not the middle of beach season for the tourism and such that goes on there. the high pressure to the north and this is what is part of hurricane joaquin and low pressure and the difference between those two areas. fum funnels a lot of wind and we're on day six battling the sea and seeing all of the rain that's come. ts these are doppler radar

estimates. one there 15 inches just around the charleston area and we've seen areas around 17 inches. take a look at some of the video from what it looks like in the area and so many cars submerged and when your car is submerged and you are potentially in danger you're having to get other people potentially to try to rescue you and put their lives in danger. a lot of tow trucks, a busy people as well. take a listen to advice that one of these guys had to say. >> if you see water on the road just turn around. call your bus, take a picture, tell them look, i'm not coming today. it's better off car instead of having it to buy another one. >> great advice. the expense of buying a new car and going through all of that. stay off the roads. we're not done with this yet. still have the rain today and part of the day tomorrow and still going to be targeting south carolina. this has been this persistent band of rain right here that will slowly pivot towards the north. i think away from charleston a little bit towards myrtle beach throughout the day today and maybe a few areas still another

6, 8, 10 inches of rain on top of what they've seen. we'll see spots maybe in the 22, 23 inch range totals from the storm. >> unbelievable. >> thanks, rick. other stories making headlines another fox alert, syrian president bashar al asad fighting back against the air strikes slamming into his country. in an interview with iran tv he calls them counter productive and says terrorism is spreading regardless. he hopes to form a coalition even though russia has been bombing the country since wednesday. the gunman that opened fire inside a classroom in an oregon community college killing a teacher and eight students killed himself after a gun fight with police officers. investigators say he did it two minutes after police arrived. the family of 16-year-old survivor cheyenne fitzgerald sharings the horrifying moments, survived only by playing dead. >> she's starting to really remember the events and what

happened. she was asked what her religion was and didn't say anything. >> fitzgerald said the killer singled out a male student telling him you're the lucky one and made him watch as his classmates were gunned down. the gunman gave him a package to pass on to police sparing his life. as a fight breaks out at a texas football game both benches cleared as players rushed the field throwing punches in all directions. coaches and the refs tried to break it but couldn't and eventually had to call police. the fight didn't phase the cheerleaders, though. hear them cheering the entire time. trying to keep everything -- wow. >> all right. clayton, baseball time. >> oh, canadian man's love of baseball gets him out of jury duty. the man selected to be a juror on a murder trial in toronto but wrote a note saying he had tickets for the blue jays playoff game and waited 20 years for, quote, a moment like this.

you know, there have been reports this week that he is not going to be in the first debate and is going to wait until the end of october, you know, i'm of the mind when we find out he's announcing, that's fine. in terms of the impact it would have if and when he ever gets in, you know, i don't think it's at all clear because i don't know that he can beat hillary clinton into terms of just out organizing her or out raising money or getting more votes. he's there almost in funny way as a place holder in case she falls apart and he can pick up the pieces. >> the hillary people seem totally unconcerned or at least putting on a show of being unconcerned by a possibility of his running. do you think that's real? are they worried about him splitting her constituency? >> yeah. i mean i think that a lot of that, because you're hearing also reports that way double reports, they're unconcerned and secondly that they're going to

all of their donors and organizers and saying don't jump ship, we're in good shape. if they're not unconcerned -- if they are unconcerned they're foolish in all of this because, obviously, as the sitting vice president, and with a lot of support within the party, especially from labor and some elements of the clinton -- of the obama coalition you have to take him seriously. again, i think his real opportunity is if she gets into even more trouble. if there are more revelations in the investigation of her private e-mails and servers. if she does badly in front of the benghazi committee on october 22nd. in that sense i don't know that it's crucial that he appear in the debate, in the middle of this month, because again, as i say, i think in a funny way he's more there as a placeholder in case hillary clinton collapses. >> a lot of questions as to who will be the next speaker of the house in the wake of john boehner's retirement. the man who was the inspiration for kevin spacey's character

"house of card" kevin mccarthy seems to be the discussion and talk but you have congressman jason chaffetz on your show this morning. the question, will he run for speaker of the house, chris? >> well, that's right. we're going to get some answers and maybe raise some more questions at the top of the hour on "fox news sunday" because chaffetz has said and he is a hard-charging rising star, chair of the house oversight committee as you have up there, and he has said that he is seriously considering running and i don't know the answer but on "fox news sunday" he will announce whether he's going to run against kevin mccarthy for speaker of the house. it would be pretty interesting because he, of course, is a chairman of a committee, he's been in with the leadership, mccarthy is the number two pe t person in the leadership and it would be a break if he decides he would oppose mccarthy. he was critical of mccarthy's remarks this week when he seemed

said, you know, we can tell you're unintelligent based on the way you talk and so there's really no need to listen to you anymore. i said well, i'm going to make sure you listen to me a little more. >> it was a defense of southern culture but also a celebration of it. why do you like being from the south? >> you know, it's really all i've known. i've been around the world several times and we live in a world that's gotten smaller. the advent of the internet, ability to get on an airplane and be around the world in 24 hours. yet you always are drawn back to home. it's -- with the world being as small as it is it's necessary we learn to embrace other cultures. you know, like mark twain say, travel destroys prejudice and the more you get out and see that, you see the differences and you don't hate them, don't stereotype them, you learn to appreciate them. >> we're all feeling like we're victims these days according to a new research that seems we're in the midst of this cultural change that this idea that

manhood is somehow under attack. are we all victims? >> well, i think we're trying to be. and i think a lot of people are trying to get offended as quick as they can so they can find sympathy from somebody else. it's amazing to me i have people all the time who look at my videos and send me messages and say you say the things that we're thinking but we're afraid to say them. so occasionally i've asked people, why are you afraid to say them? we don't want to offend anyone. i said, well, i think there's a tact of being able to be honest and straightforward look somebody in the eye and this is my opinion and you're welcome to yours. we have this micro sensitivity, you know, this hyper sensitivity to words and it's causing people to quite honestly try to find a pat on the back if you will and it's really gotten easy to hide behind a keyboard these days and tell the world how they should feel sorry for you. >> well being a victim means never having to say you're sorry. >> exact sfli mainly the appeal.

president even while police were on the scene hops up on stage and tells the rest of us we will have to take your guns away to make america safer. what's your response? >> i got to see your clip of me yesterday. i was in tennessee and it was a rally, a love fest, we were packed and amazing people and i talked about it. you saw i was talking about it and, you know, that was a gun-free zone in oregon where they had no guns allowed, no nothing. the only one that had the gun was the bad guy and everybody sitting there and there was nothing they could do, not a thing they could do. the police did a fantastic job getting in there quickly but nobody with any protection and wouldn't they have been better off if somebody in the room, anybody, you know, anybody, had a gun to at least help them out. it was a terrible thing and these gun-free zones are a disaster. everybody is just a sitting duck. you saw it recently where military people highly decorated, a gun-free zone, right near the military base on milttry base.

gun-free zone and a couple of those guys were really highly decorated military people and this guy walks in and shoots them and kills them and it's just horrible. so, you know, there's a double side to all of this stuff if you had the guns in that room, he wouldn't have shot so many people and they wouldn't have just been standing and sitting there helpless. >> all the other side of this is the mental health issue you raised as well. what kind of discussion do we need in this country around mental illness and those who are mentally ill getting their hands on weapons? >> it is a mental health issue than a gun issue. it's a mental health issue and nobody wants to talk about that. obama gets up and starts talking about guns but this is a mental health issue and, you know, we -- so many cities look at different places even in new york, but where they let people out they know shouldn't be out because they have to save funds, have funding problems and years ago they let a whole tremendous number of people out on the streets because they didn't have the money to take care of them,

and this is what we have. we have to do something about mental health. it is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. it certainly every one of these instances with the school shootings and movie theater shooters every one turns out to be the same kind of a character. at the same time no matter what you do, you're going to have people slip through the cracks. if you see a loner in a community, your a note going to put him in an instin tution because he fits a description but it's interesting whenever you see these things happening they go whack to the community and the community always says, oh, we really see, you know, he really was a strange guy but unfortunately by that time it's too late. we do have a big, big mental health issue. >> now you said the other day you would give vladimir putin an "a" for leadership, he's trying to prop up the assad regime. is that a good idea and should the united states be -- stop its fight against the assad regime? is that the best we're going to get there? >> i'm only saying he's much more of a leader than we have in this country and we're the gang

that can't shoot straight. we go and bomb a hospital last night looks like it, where 19 people were killed. and, you know, here we are complaining about them and we bomb an innocent hospital that should have never happened and everybody saying they knew it was off-limits, somebody made a terrible mistake. it has to happen to us. which is the gang that can't do it, can't shoot straight. it's terrible what's happening under this administration. absolutely terrible. certainly putin looks like a hell of a lot more leader than we have whether the we like him or not, he was my co-host on "60 minutes" the other night and we did the biggest ratings they've had in a long time. i don't know if -- should i give him the credit or i take the credit? >> you actually said, i think you tweeted or talked about this week you would actually be able to have a good relationship with putin. do you believe that? >> i think i might. i've had a good relationship with a lot of people over the years. i've built a great company. i get along with democrats, with republicans, i get along with everybody and, you know, it is about relationship. he does not like obama and obama

doesn't like him. they have really bad chemistry. you can see it when they're sitting. deals are people. i study people. you look at those two together and it's just never going to work. it is never going to work. and he's making obama look very foolish unfortunately. >> and -- >> who should we be supporting in syria? >> well, you know, the problem i have is that we are supporting -- this has happened before. you look at gadfy and you look at all these others well, try to help people out and they end up killing our ambassadors, the people that we've helped after the overthrow takes place. you look at saddam hussein and iraq. the problem i have -- it's such a -- sort of an obvious problem after the history of the way, we're supporting the rebels. we don't even know who the rebels are. i spoke with a general the other day who's pretty well versed on this section of the world and he said, we have no idea who we're supporting. you know, we have no idea who they are. you know, look assad is a bad guy, but you could get worse.

i mean, assad is bad, but you get -- and the migration is because of all of that civil war. if it would stabilize in any form, maybe these people could move back and, you know, we don't know who the people are that are moving. you see all these people. then this country is supposed to take 200,000, but you watch this migration, there's so many of them young men, strong men, and you say why aren't they fighting for their country and all of a sudden you hear obama, we're going to take maybe up to 200,000 or maybe more coming into this country. i think we're crazy. >> you've been -- you were criticized this week by one of your -- one of your rivals, governor jeb bush of florida, for perhaps switching issues, switching sides on the syrian refugee issue initially saying we should welcome them and then saying we, as president, you would remove them from the country. what do you say to jeb bush? >> he's very weak on immigration. bad on common core. he's bad on at lot of issues. i don't see how he goes any place. he's a nice person.

that's about what he's got going for him. he is so weak on immigration, he has been for a long time. remember, they come in as an act of love, famous act of love statement. now he wants to welcome. first of all we know $19 trillion as a country. we have to fix our country. we have to rebuild, get rid of debt do so many things. bringing these people in, 200,000, over a period of years, is billions and billions of dollars and we don't know who they are. could be one of the great trojan horses. i think it probably isn't, but the word probably is not acceptable. it could be one of the great trojan horses of all time. they come in here. these are young, strong, men. you look at the migration. i said the other day, i was with a group of people and said where are the women, the children? they showed the scene of all of these young men. and we're going to just open up our country and take these people? we just can't do it. >> make sure you're letting in the good and keeping out the bad. mr. donald trump, thank you so much for your time today. >> okay. thank you all.

>> we see the federal government trying to force religious institutions to do things against their beliefs. the hhs mandate being one. that's just the beginning. when you say it's just contraception, let it go, most people believe in this think it's okay, but what about conscientious objection. then to this case which it's emergency abortion they're talking about. >> let's be specific. i think that's important to the story, that it's incomplete miscarriages. miscarriages that were incomplete and the aclu is arguing here is their statement that every pregnant woman who enters an emergency room should be guaranteed she will get the care she needs and not have to worry she won't get appropriate care because the hospital's religious affiliation argue it puts serious risk of complication for a woman who has have half a miscarriage. >> always going to be an explanation and most digestible possible. what does the aclu want? they want no religious belief whatsoever to get in the way of their objectives, their goals,

their ideology. what the aclu be happy if every catholic hospital had to do full term abortions? you better believe it. no doubt. this is just a case of incremental pursuit of their objectives. that's my opinion. catholic theology, and a lot of -- most christian denominations would say doctors able to do whatever necessary procedure in order to save the life or to help a proportionally grave sickness of a mother. even if the consequences are that a fetus in this case, a human being that is at the beginning of their stages of development suffers damage or dies. so in other words, it's not that a catholic doctor or institution has to say oh, no, i have to protect the fetus above the mother, protect a child against the mother, no. it's take care of the patient, but the problem is, the aclu doesn't believe that baby inside the mother's wom ae's womb.

>> or a human being. >> in these cases almost all of these cases, the fetus is dead, so they're arguing -- we're not talking about incremental changes. that they're arguing in most of these cases -- >> that's not their argument. the argument is that a doctor, a hospital should be required to kill the fetus if that's what the patient wants in order to protect the life of the mother. these catholic institutions are saying we will never intentionally kill a human being. we will try to save the life of both. >> let us know what you think. unbelievable story. >> and worth fighting for. i mean if they can force this on the catholic church, then i mean what can't they do? >> absolutely. >> not just the catholic church. you know, one out of nine hospitals in the united states are catholic but what about all of the other religious institutions that are doing health care. >> that's right. >> 11 minutes before the top of the hour. breaking news on the 2016 election. you just heard from donald trump. well, we have brand new poll

new york city with my uncle and went to the two towers and he told me a story about this man who walked across the twin towers on a wire and didn't believe him. and then i saw a documentary years later called "man on wire" and it all made sense. they made a film about felipe in 1974 walked across the twin towers on a wire. joseph gordon leavitts playing him, the real man trained him to do the walk. robert zemeka directed this film and i spoke to joseph gordon leavitt how they recreated 1974 new york city, how do they make it look so real. check this out. >> they built a real set of top two stories of the world trade center and it looked beautiful and real and really like being there and then surrounded it with, you know, huge green walls with movie magic creates

"fox and friends" and trump doubled down. >> make my day. >> have you seen the father and son smack down synchronized to the real thing. supplex. oh. >> not a oh, he's going for the body slam. oh. >> dad and son here on fox and friends. i think the kid was snapping into a slim jim during our show. can you dig it? we do begin with an extreme weather alert. we are tracking two developing stories this morning. a desperate search is on for a cargo ship missing with dozenps of americans on board. it vanished thursday. hurricane joaquin slammed the bahamas. >> at the same time south carolina dealing with dangerous flooding and neighborhoods where people are being trapped and

told to stay put to avoid ven during into the rising floodwaters. >> a lot going on. rick is tracking the storms and has been since the beginning and we want to start off with jonathan who is live in charleston, south carolina. what do you see? >> good morning to you. it has been an adventurous morning commute. you can be driving down some streets in downtown charleston that are completely dry, turn the corner and then you find this. water lapping up to the front steps of these historic homes near the battery in downtown charleston's historic district. what's going on here is a combination of heavy rains and high tides causing this flooding. police have been restricting inbound traffic to the charleston peninsula which includes the city's popular downtown historic district. the city is used to flooding for several hours at a time, officials say the water from the storm system could remain for several days and affect areas normally not prone to flooding. it's a similar scene in north myrtle beach. cars driving through high waters

and at times becoming stranded. officials warning people if you see water in front of you, turn around don't take chances because often the water is often hard to tell just how deep the water is. out at sea, the u.s. coast guard continues to search for a cargo ship that wept missing in hurricane joaquin. the large container vessel "el faro" lost communication thursday after sending a distress signal. the search involves flying aircraft into the storm at very low altitudes. the coast guard released audio from one of its pilots describing the conditions. listen. >> swells at 1,000 feet and the wave height in 40 feet. turbulence moderate causing the aircraft to climb and descend. this was the most challenging weather conditions anyone on our crew had ever flown in. be. >> coast guard crews found a life ring from that missing ves will suggests to -- vessel which suggests they are searching in the right area.

downtown charleston, some residents coming out walking the dogs, seek seeing people jogging through it trying to conduct their lives as normally as possible. but as you can see from the flooding here, it may be several days before the city completely drys out. back to you guys. >> all right. jonathan, thank you. and rick, how long is it going to be until the waters recede? some folks will be trapped inside their homes, are they not? >> they are. one thing flash flooding, flash flooding comes upon you quickly and leaves quickly. river flooding is a different thing and because there's been so much water in south carolina all of the rivers are now at flood stage, major flood stage and a lot of them at their all-time ever heaviest flow in the rivers. so that takes a long time to go away and all of the areas that are flooded around that will be kind of a long-term process. we do dry out by tuesday into wednesday and then we'll start to see things get a little -- not back to normal by any means but the waters go down and then a better sense of some of the damage that's out there, especially to some of the roads.

right now interstate 26 that's where this line of storms has kind of formed and this is very heavy rain once again. we're talking about rainfall rates maybe three to five inches an hour and that means you're already saturated, seen a lot of areas that have picked up well in excess of a foot of rain and now you get more. we're not done with this at all. you see there this is the future forecast. that right there is joaquin. it's going to get close to bermuda by the way, but then we're going to continue to watch moisture from that feed here in towards south carolina. we get a little break late in the evening tonight and then overnight we think there's going to be another batch of rain that lines up there again and that is again going to be some very heavy rain. rainfall totals coming here. we will see likely some in excess of 8 to 10 inches. again in a lot of the same spots. charleston the heaviest of the rain to the north of you. that's good news. not myrtle beach which has seen over 15 inches of rain, they will see another 5 to 8 inches of rain. not done at all.

campuses across the country and high school campuses across the country in the wake of that horrible shooting at the oregon college campus. donald trump earlier on the show, says that these gun-free zones are a complete disaster. listen to trump a few minutes ago. >> that was a gone-free zone in oregon where they had to guns allowed, no nothing. the only one that had the gun was the bad guy and everybody was sitting there and there was nothing they could do. not a thing they could do. actually the police did a fantastic job getting in that quickly. but there was nobody with any protection and wouldn't they have been better off if somebody in the room, anybody, you know, anybody had a gun to at least help them out? but it was a terrible thing and these gun-free zones are a disaster. everybody is just a sitting duck. >> you can mock trump but this is a rationale point. when there's a drunk driving accident you don't ban cars. you prevent drunk people from driving them. taking guns away from the law

abiding is insane and childish. >> we talked yesterday about the number of guns in american households has actually gone down as these mass shootings have gone up. can you blame more guns? >> we spoke to the former high school football coach at the ohio high school that protected his students there when there was no one else to protect them back in 2012. having armed guards at the school, people who are trained and know what they're doing, police officers, who are trained in this, would have absolutely protected -- >> this infantile focus on the tool of the violence, the gun, what kind of gun, where did the gun come from, how big is the magazine? really if? a lot of people have guns at home not shooting strangers. no focus on the guy who did it, what about his life caused him to murder people he had never met before. >> the other side of that argument, though, of course, is in what people always throw out there. look at australia they have no gun violence, don't have guns, citizens aren't allowed to have guns. >> they have no freedom.

cars flying off the dealers lots the fastest in ten years in this country. auto sales rising at a pace of 18 million a month during the month of september. overall the industry is seeing a boost of 16% in one year thanks to a lot of things including low gas prices. the rise causing rifts between companies and auto workers. there may be strikes on the way that could affect the dynamic we explained. joining us with her take the host of "sunday morning futures" maria bartiromo. one sector of the american company doing great. >> it is. i'm glad you started that way. saw the jobs numbers on friday and continue to see this economy sort of crimping by very, very slowly and the auto sector has been a complete standout. we really did see a very strong showing last month. >> gas prices? >> gas prices as well. that's leading people to jeeps and suvs. but also low interest rates. when you have rock bottom rates people don't mind taking out a loan or taking out --

workers seem to have a pretty good deal at least by compareton so everyone else. >> one of the issues is that around 2007/2008 when we had the financial crisis they had new concessions they agreed to. newer workers would get paid lower than older workers. because you have the seniority. they want that changed. they say we got through the financial crisis, now you see auto sales where they are, we want to be paid. we haven't gotten a raise since 2007. we want this stopped. the truth is, we just started getting traction in the auto sector. if you put that extras cost and upset in the situation now, you may very well just bring them right back because this is only one sector doing well. >> a lot of labor leaders not economists. who's on your show? >> we have a great show today. we're talking about the economy with maya mcginness, representative max thorn berry, chairman of the house armed services committee. everybody is questioning russia right now, what is russia's motivation in terms of telling the u.s. get out of the way,
