"fox and friends" starts now. good morning. it is monday, october 5, 2015. i'm ainsley earhardt. filling in for elisabeth. our beloved south carolina is underwater this morning. crews rushed to rescue people from their cars and houses. five people already dead and many more families in danger. we have team coverage. fox team coverage live on the grounds all over the state of south carolina. >> we do. meanwhile, another hard hitting appearance by hillary rodham clinton. >> i'm so bumped. >> donald trump? isn't he the one that's like,

this is hard to see because i love everyone there. at least five people have been killed. the nightmare is not over yet either. this morning the national guard is on hand as people are warned to stay in their homes and off the roads. >> we have live coverage in south carolina. maria molina is in florence. maria, what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning. that's right. we're in florence. between columbia and myrtle beach in south carolina. this is another hard hit area by the his toirk and life-threatening flash floods that we see. in some areas, it's forecast to worsen the next couple of days as we continue to see rivers cresting. some of them at record levels across the state of south carolina. our location in florence, just to our northwest, it's a lake that's overwhelmed by the amount of heavy rain. this location saw more than 10 inches of rain in just a couple of days. that water was overwhelmed there

across the lake and slowed down to our location which is forest lake. behind me is what is a bridge. you can't even see the bridge anymore because the floodwaters are so high and residents are urged to stay home not only because of floodwaters on roadways but some of the roads are not even there anymore. the raging floodwaters breaking apart the asphalt and eroding roadways. again, stay home if you can. the floodwaters, we're told by officials that some of the areas are filled with bacteria. at our location, we've seen eels swimming around and dead fish. stay home if you can. the forecast calls for more rain at our location. heavy rain is coming down. about 2 to 4 inches of additional rain. locally more than 6 inches. in south carolina, some of the totals are as high as 26 inches of rain. north carolina just to our north also hit hard with as much as 16 inches of rain being reported. some of the scenes that we've

seen across our location, across the state of south carolina, we visited charleston and columbia. there were structures that were severely damaged. cars completely submerged in water and rescues ongoing across many of the areas. just to our west along i-95, a 75-mile stretch of that interstate shut down because of floodwaters over that area. again, very significant. something else to know is that we have gusty winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. the ground is very saturated and that will easily bring down trees and power lines. so that's something else to watch out for here across south carolina for a widespread section of the state. like weigh mentioned, river flooding will continue to be a big story here with some areas that haven't seen the worst yet. still to come later this week. >> let's send it over to you in new york. >> thanks, maria. now john be seer i is in columbia, south carolina. john that? >> reporter: good morning to

you. right now, i'm standing on the banks of gill's creek. as we zoom in here, the floot waters are raging underneath this bridge. yesterday they were so high they knocked over the guardrail. part of the guardrail on this bridge. just an indication of how powerful the floodwaters are. we have video, i believe, from the same area yesterday. a catastrophic flooding damaging multiple businesses. elsewhere in the city of columbia, first responders were busy rescuing people. take a look at this dramatic video from close to the downtown area. the columbia fire department swift water rescue team strung lines across flooded roads to allow rescuers to reach stranded motorists pulling them to safety statewide. hundreds of people had to be rescued from stranded vehicles. officials continue to urge people to stay home if at all

possible. >> to already have three fatalities, that's three too many and three people we needed to stay home that didn't. >> reporter: right now the entire city of columbia is on a boil water advisory and portion was the city, large portions are having to go without tap water. in fact, downtown is without tap waterment officials say it may take anywhere from three to four days to restore service completely. back to you guys. >> jonathan serrie in your parents' hometown. >> he's less than a mile of a from jackson. maybe our military men and women are affected by that. the highways is closed down. if you were on vacation in charleston, you can't get home. >> no school today. they called it off because you can't drive a school bus through standing water. we'll keep you posted because it continues to rain down there and

the flooding continues as well. six minutes after the hour. welcome to the week. >> hi. good morning. it's great to see you here. fox news alert to start off with. college students in the philadelphia area, now on edge this morning. there was a vague message that was posted online threatening an attack on an unnamed college campus this afternoon. the fbi sent an alert to colleges around that city. many of those schools promising increased police patrols and they're also warning students to take precautions today. we'll keep following the story this morning. >> a teenage surfer fighting back against a shark after an attack off the coast of florida. the 14-year-old punched the nearly 5-foot shark after it took a nasty bite out of his hand. he was in the water with four friends, he swam 100 yards back to shore before he got help and was rushed to the hospital for surgery. this brings the shark attacks in the area this season to ten. a little girl missing for days miraculously found alive in

ohio. quite a story here. listen. >> hi baby. >> this is such a miracle. search teams scoured the area after rain peterson, 2 years old, wandered away from her grandparents house and found sleeping in a field 1,000 yards from that house. >> this whole community was united in one thing. it was asking god for a miracle. he gave us a miracle. tonight he gave us a miracle. >> he sure did. that little girl is now safe in the hospital in stable condition. the former president, george h.w. bush recovering after breaking a bone in his neck over the summer. random pictures showed he spent time at a biker bar, nice, near his summer home in maine. the 91-year-old chief of staff is almost become to 100% but still wearing a neck brace.

that is one tough man. those are your headlines. glad to see he's doing so well. that's awesome. >> another bush is in the news. should bush 43 come out and help jeb bush become bush 45? >> jeb bush would like to be the next president. where is he in the latest "wall street journal" poll? first off, in new hampshire, bush is at 11. trump continues to lead. he's about double that. in iowa, trump is at 24% which is three times what fiorina has and just ahead of ben carson. what's interesting about this is it's rare that both candidates leads in both polls. >> he's down five in iowa and seven in new hampshire. that is significant. fiorina's up ten in new hampshire. a guy on the move but not pictured in iowa is bobby jindal. up to 6%. he's starting to make noise. >> many wondering if joe biden is going to get in the race.

he probably will not participate in the first democratic debate. let's take a look at some of the polls if he decides to get in the race. look at new hampshire left. iowa on the right-hand side. sanders is leading in new hampshire. 42%. clinton 28%. biden 18%. >> donald trump sat down with chuck todd and what would it take to get him out of race? here's his answer. >> is that i was doing badly, if i felt that the polls were -- i think polls are reflective. right now i love polls because i'm winning everything. we just got one to florida. i'm killing the governor and the senator from florida. it's been amazing. texas winning. winning everything. winning every state, every national poland big lead. if that changed and that went in a different direction and if i

were five corrections "the new york times" had to issue. how do you say marco rubio is a congressman and not a u.s. senator. >> they also got her age wrong. >> simple mistakes. >> it was five major errors. bottom line is, it wasn't flattering. i don't remember the last time a wife or a to be first lady. >> they spelled names wrong. there's no excuse for that. you can google that in a heartbeat. >> just because she's beautiful. the only thing she is talks about is being a parent. she's a nice person. meanwhile, hillary clinton appeared on the season premiere in "saturday night live." in this particular sketch, she's playing a bartender while the fake hillary clinton, they have a little conversation. listen to this. >> so darn bummed.

at 225 square miles of debris filed has been discovered in the search for the cargo ship. breaking details now from an attorney specializing in the field of maritime law, rod sullivan. rod, what did they find so far? >> what they found is a major oil slick. it's more likely than not the ship broke in half before it sank. a ship that found her -- it simply fills up with water and sinks, it leaks oil over a period of many weeks and years. here there's a big oil slick indicating that the ship broke up. >> why do you think they haven't found a lifeboat? do you think they couldn't get into them? >> i'm very surprised. i expected with as much warning as they had, they would make it into lifeboats and rafts. i think with the 150 mile an hour winds, the lift of the ship and the 30-foot waves made it

impossible to get into a lifeboat or life raft. >> today, they're calling it a question why the captain took off with the storm coming. as it turns out, weren't they way to the side and would have been clear had the storm -- i didn't realize this until this morning. the storm was going to the north and did a loop right into them? >> yeah. it was a terrible situation. we have a storm heading to the northeast. we have a vessel that's heading to the southeast and the captain thought he would pass clear. hurricanes are unpredictable and this storm made a loop. a loop at a very unfortunate time for this ship. it put the center of the hurricane over the track of the ship. that was the -- that was something unanticipated, i believe, when they plotted this course. >> sure. they have found -- i think they've found floating life rafts or rather things that are buoyant including styrofoam. but it is that oil slick and you feel confident.

for quick headlines happening today. the supreme court is back in session after the three-month summer recess. what's on tap for this term? regulation of abortion clinics in texas. health care. and labor unions among other subjects. today democratic candidate hillary clinton will unveil new gun control measures in the wake of that college shooting in oregon. they will be aimed at strengthening background gun checks on buyers and eliminating legal immunity for sellers. and the senate is set to vote on a bill that will change our veterans retirement plans.

the proposal is begin a new system in the year 2018 that lets vets with fewer than 12 years of service contribute to a 401(k) the government will then much up to 5%. good news. thanks, steve. catholic hospitals choose not to perform abortions, right? amt brand new lawsuit. the aclu is trying to force them to perform abortions now. they say the policies of catholic hospitals are not based on medicine. does the aclu have a case here? here to debate this is attorney ebony williams and president of ceo of americans united for life, schar main yetter. thanks for joining us. >> ebony, i'll start with you. why would the aclu want to force a catholic hospital to do something they disagree with? >> they have every right to preserve their convictions around abortion and terminating pregnancies. legally, if you're going to

limit the scopes on the services you provide, every pregnant woman that goes in there has a right to a certain of standard of care. if you're going to limit that for any reason, including faith or conviction, you have to inform them of that so they can have informed consent around their decision to go there. >> all right. schar main, what are your thoughts? as women, we all have choices. we could choose to go to another hospital. what do you think about this? >> ainsley, this is the aclu up to their old tricks of treating using a lawsuit to impose their own political beliefs on people. when you're a woman who is pregnant, you want to go to a doctor who treats you as two patients. you've got the mother and the baby. that is the only thing going on here in these catholic hospitals. the direction directives given to them, there's two patients. in a crisis wags sw a mother, they're obligated to give care to the mother. there's not an issue here at

all. it's the aclu trying to score political points and to force doctors to go against their conscience. >> to be fair, though, there is an issue of respectfully in the sense that sometimes the well-being of the mother and the survival of the fetus are in conflict of the fetus. that's why we have medical acts that speak to that specifically. that's the basis of this lawsuit. in fact, these hospitals are violating that very federal statute. >> we did hear from the aclu -- >> no, that's not -- >> keep talking, schar main. >> there's not a lot of confusion. it's the aclu trying to come in and get between the doctors. the doctors have to be empowered to make critical decisions at the moment of crisis. you can't have the aclu coming in and saying, you plus choose abortion. there's a big difference between a direct abortion and abortion that occurs in a situation where you're trying to save either the mother or the baby. >> certainly, you're right. so many of these abortions in the five cases cited in the

hit areas where maria, it's still raining today. >> reporter: that's right. that's really the concern that we're going to see more water coming down across areas that are already experiencing flash flooding. that's just one concern in addition to river flooding and also along coastal areas, beach erosion and coastal flooding from saltwater coming into towns. we're located in florence, south carolina, to the east of columbia, west of myrtle beach and just to our west is i-95 where a 75-mile stretch of the interstate was closed because of floodwaters coming over that interstate and just to our northwest of our location, we have oakdale lake, the floodwaters overwhelming that lake. a lot of that floodwater sweeping across parts of southern florence and behind me, yesterday we saw floodwaters raging over a river. this morning, we have floodwaters that are much higher. you can't even look back there where the bridge is. the concern is that many of the roads actually have been washed away by the raging floodwaters.

the asphalt breaking apart. home. do not drive through flooded roadways. the roads may possibly not even be there across parts of the state of south carolina. i want to share with you this video that i captured yesterday in florence as we arrived of a car completely submerged in water. it was pushed off the road. that's one example of why residents are told to stay home. in columbia, south carolina, we visited that city as well. it looked like a river swept through the middle of that town with structures completely damaged and rescues are ongoing across that city. the rain, again, is forecast to continue, taking a look at the radar. it's widespread across south carolina. about 2 to 4 inches of additional rain forecast. locally, though, in some storms, you could get more than 6 inches of rain and the flooding is supposed to worsen in parts of south carolina with the forecast for some rivers to not crest until wednesday or even thursday. so this will continue to be a big story across south carolina.

by the way, north carolina also hit hard with as much as 16 inches of rain being reported across that state. we'll keep an eye on that. again, across both states. stay home if you can. back to you in new york. >> a lot of people can't get home, right, maria? >> a lot of people went to the clemson/notre dame game and can't get home because the highways are closed and people having to hunker down. >> thank you, maria. >> reporter: by the way, a lot of people also just kind of, since the highways are closed, they're staying in hotels and any town that they can find here in florence. hotel rooms were booking up very quickly. we had curfews in effect and couldn't get food or drive around the town as well because of the flash flooding ongoing. stay safe out there, stay home. again, historic and life-threatening situation ongoing here in south carolina. >> good advice. a friend of mine lost their house. they canceled their flood insurance a week ago. >> typically, only people with

the federal program for flood insurance are covered for floods. >> two hours from the beach. you don't expect that to flood. lake katherine flooded, the dams broke. water everywhere. >> we'll be there all morning long. in the meantime, headlines with heather. >> a couple of new stories. an arizona man is under arrest for a drive-by shooting in the phoenix suburbs but aren't linking him to the recent shootings in the same area. christopher hoffman admits to having opened fire at another car on arizona's 101 freeway shattering its window. that's a different highway than the last string of events occurred. that was on i-10. no one was hurt in the recent incident. hoffman faces several charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous drug. imagine spotting a guy with a gun breaking into your house on surveillance video. instead of calling the cops, this homeowner fights back. you can see the resident as he wrestles the pistol away from

the would-be robber. this happened in the garage of his san francisco home. that intruder fighting back. but the homeowner gets hold of the gun and points it at the guy as he runs away. he's still on the run this morning. how terrifying would that be? a connecticut police officer denied a well deserved cup of dunkin' donuts coffee. why? apparently one of the employees at this west hartford, connecticut, chainsaw him standing in line and screamed "he didn't get the message. we don't serve cops here." that police officer left but the store manager ran out and caught up with him outside and made that employee apologize. the cop said he was grateful but still turned down that free cup of joe. those are your headlines. i'll see you back here in a little bit. unbelieve ablg. >> yeah. >> thanks, heather. the new satellite radio channel, fox news headlines, 24/7 is debuts on sirius xm today. the program provides listeners with real-time headlines around

it will bring a smile to your face. live from new york city and south carolina, this is "fox & friends." we're waking up, what's everyone talking about? that extreme weather down in south carolina, so let's get right to it. the catastrophic flooding down in the south, this is conway, south carolina, like many places around the state, folks are trapped inside their homes, floodwaters leaving them with absolutely nowhere to go. officials are calling this disaster a one in 1,000 year event. >> unbelievable. look at that. scenes like this dramatic rescue playing out time and time again as the water ravages communities. the nightmare not over, at least five people have been killed. officials are warning people to stay inside their homes and off the roads and today schools are closed down.

>> that was then, what about now? marina malina is in florence and jonathan is in columbia. let's begin again with maria. >> reporter: good morning, good to see you and hello everybody at home. we're in florence, south carolina, a city located between columbia and myrtle beach and here the flooding is devastating. we have a lake located to our northwest and that lake was overwhelmed by heavy rain, more than ten inches reported at our location and a lot of that floodwater has gone flowing downstream and in our location behind us we have a different lake called forest lake and we've seen significant flooding there as well with water entering homes, their back yards and even a bridge that's behind me with water flowing over it. roads have become impassable out here. we've seen cars also submerged and flooding not just hitting areas that are inland very bad but along coastal areas we saw significant flooding, some of it from high tide. take a look at that picture out of isle of palms in south carolina, where you can see the ocean meeting a pool. so very high tide over the

weekend producing significant flooding, in columbia what looks like a river cutting through parts of the downtown area and you can see the coast guard rescues many people that were caught in the floodwaters, drivers unfortunately trying to go over some of those flooded roadways and in columbia even apartment buildings covered in floodwaters why some of the rescues had to be taken place there and here again in florence tong see flooding and heavy rain coming down, gusty winds potentially over 30 miles per hour that could bring some trees down and even power lines so that's an additional concern, aside from flooded roadways. otherwise on the radar you could see we have areas of rain, widespread across south carolina right now, with flooding that's forecast to continue as much as two to four inches of rain locally higher amounts in excess of six inches still possible especially along coastal areas, why we could look at some of the heavier rainfall rates. the worst not over just yet. river flooding and rivers forecast to crest as we head

into wednesday and thursday, so some communities are bracing from some of the worst impacts from the historic and life-threatening flood event across south carolina. lot of this moisture attributed to joaquin, took a close call with bermuda over the weekend and brought tropical storm conditions there yesterday. lot of that moisture being funneled in across south carolina and north carolina, bringing that historic flooding, some areas across south carolina reporting more than 26 inches of rain, very significant, that shattered not only daily rainfall records across the state but monthly records for being at the highest levels, even some rain gauges being swept away a river xwanlg being swept away by rushing floodwaters. rain will continue throughout the day in south carolina and we'll keep you updated. stay off the roads. lot of the water filled with bacteria and in charleston we saw some paddle boarders over the weekend. water could be filled with

floodwaters are receding in this particular location. but take a look at this video from yesterday, it shows catastrophic flooding in this area surrounding gills creek. the floodwaters damaged multiple businesses. elsewhere first responders busy rescuing people stranded in vehicles. they strung lines across flooded roads that aloud the teams to reach people trapped in their vehicles. statewide hundreds of people had to be rescued. here in columbia, the entire city is under a boil water alert, and large portions of the city have no running tap water. it got knocked out, several major water mains were damaged. the downtown area, the greater downtown area almost completely without tap water, and city officials say it could take three to four years -- three to four days before it's completely restored.

good morning, it is monday, october 5th, 2015, i'm ainsley earhart filling in for elizabeth. in south carolina check out the flooding, the pool there actually meeting the ocean in this picture, the river is meeting the porch of that beach house. that's at isle of palms outside of charleston. also this is another house you can see the water on the porch. we're live on the ground with brand new images. vice president joe biden has been teasing democrats for weeks but this morning there's word of a big announcement is on the way. great baier is here live with rumblings from joe from washington. >> wow. and do these poses look familiar in they should. it's pets posing like they're in

high school yearbook. find out what year they're in, only these animal this is hour. lot of people tell you they have the animals, we have them, because the mornings are better with "friends." it's being called the 1,000-year flood, south carolina under water at this hour as relentless rain begins to shoulder or brings in shoulder high water in some areas i should say. rescue crews are clinging on ropes for survival. ten counties declaring states of emergency and enacting curfews and closing stretches of roads as well as highways. meteorologist maria mmolina is live in columbus. in south carolina a new flash flood warning has been issued. >> that's right, i'm here in florence, the city between

columbia and myrtle beach, where flash flooding is ongoing. we had a brand new flash flood warning issued for this area because of storms rolling through, producing rainfall rates of an inch per hour. so that will aggravate the flash flood situation that's already under way and wind gusts of over 30 miles per hour also forecast and where the ground is already saturated you could see some trees come down and some power lines come down as well. take a look at where i'm standing. i'm on a flooded roadway to our northwest lake, it was overcome with heavy rain inned floo ened floodwaters behind me. they have forest lake and a bridge with floodwaters over it, and believe it or not this is actually an improvement to what we saw yesterday across this area, so floodwaters are gradually starting to recede but with more rain the situation could be aggravated across many locations in south carolina and for many days coming up, like wednesday or thursday, even possibly friday in some areas. the flooding could get worse as river flooding is forecast to

continue across many areas with rivers not forecast to crest until later this week. i want to share with you some images out of conway, south carolina, a town just outside of myrtle beach, a lot of this area seeing 10 to 20 inches of rain and you can see the floodwaters surrounding a home, so many structures and homes sustaining damage from the flash flooding that's been ongoing across south carolina. you can also see that two people on tubes floating down the floodwaters out there across conway, you're not recommended to do that. officials have said some of the floodwaters do have some sewage in them or bacteria and creatures floating around. in column boo-yah what looked like a river that took over parts of that city, you can see a kayaker floating down, people had to be rescued from apartment buildings and cars, people that unfortunately drove through some of the flooded roadways and encountered bad situations. some of the roads being washed away completely so underneath the floodwaters you may not have a road anymore. taking a look at radar, that

rain is still coming down across south carolina, also in parts of north carolina, with flash flood warnings in effect, another two to four inches of rain total possible, but in those storms where you get the heavier rainfall rates you could see locally more than six inches of rain so that has brought really just historic flooding out here and one of the ingredients that really contributed to the flooding out here was joaquin, a major hurricane impacted the bahamas for days, it brushed bermuda over the weekend. a lot of that tropical moisture funneled into south carolina over the weekend, impacting many cities and producing historic and life-threatening flash flooding. it is still ongoing throughout this week, stay safe out there, stay off the roads and just really stay home if you can. over to you in new york. >> all right, maria molina, where there's not a lot of dry ground in florence, south carolina, thank you. >> thankfully it didn't hit washington, d.c. we bring in brett baier, a brand new week and a lot going on already. >> good morning. >> good morning to you. first off about the vice president getting in, he had to

how do you think they feel today and how should they feel? >> i think they'll feel hopefully more aware and more alert, but obviously they're going to feel like they're going to have to look over their shoulder all day. this is not a way to live. it's not a fun thing to have to go through but it may be a new thing we have to deal with in america. and i think the best step that the fbi could take in law enforcement could take, they are taking to make a number of categories of people aware of what's happening. they need to make sure university administrators and teachers and students are all a little bit more aware than they normally would be. they need to make sure law enforcement knows a threat is out there so that people can be more alert and pay more attention to any phone call that comes in and then finally, even trying to reach maybe family and friends and colleagues, someone who might see something in an individual who wrote this or posted this and maybe pick up the phone and call, so as we've talked about so many times before and this is not an exception, you try to get out to the public with this kind of

literally needing saving from their homes right down the street. i happened to be a neighbor that had a boat ready to go and we hooked it up to my truck and went down there and on backed the boat into the street where the waters were so high and started getting people out of their homes. it was a humbling experience. >> they were sitting on the second floor waiting for help to come and you were the help? >> i along with a lot of other people in the neighborhood, sure, yes. it was just a necessary thing. you know, i don't feel like we were doing anything that anybody else wouldn't have done. the waters were so high, cars were completely submerged. we were riding our boat in the street on a wide open plain not worried about hitting the bottom. it was probably eight to ten feet deep just in the roadway. >> goodness. >> i think what had happened is some of the dams of the lakes upstream had burst and that's what was causing these floodwaters to rise so quickly, and people really were in danger. we needed to get them out of

their homes and get them out quickly. >> you sure did. >> i just happened to have a boat. we were getting them back to shore, the whole neighborhood was there at shower to help us get these people off the boat and get them to high ground and safety. ainsley your brother, trent, he was out there, he was one of the first people there. he was helping people get out of the boat and to dry land and safety and it was just a whole group effort from the whole neighborhood. total catastrophe and devastation to the homes. >> marion, tell us the story about how you went up to one house and you expected it to extricate somebody quickly. they had a medical condition and a lot of equipment. >> like i said we are dropping people off on high ground as quick as we could get them out of the boat we went to the next house. fire and rescue said to mark the homes with orange xs as we got people out and we got to one house and an elderly couple the gentleman had oxygen tanks, he was on oxygen so we had to get

his oxygen tanks and everything from the upstairs with him, we were throwing life jackets on him and his wife and carrying them down the stairs. half way down the stairs we were walking in water. the whole first floor water was about five feet deep and it was kind of like a scene off of movie "titanic" wading through water and the furniture and everything is floating through the house. one thing that really touched me and it was very, very heartwrenching was the lady had a box of photographs with her grandchildren that was floating out of her door out into the street and i grabbed it as quick as i could and i just threw it upstairs and hope she'll find it when she gets back home and the water receded out of her house. these homes were a total devastation. i don't see how they're going to recover. they'll probably have to knock the homes down. >> marion, you've always been a great guy. but this takes it to a different level and i appreciate what you're doing for the community i grew up in. we love all those families there and we all know each other, that's what's interesting, south carolina is a very small state and we all, our dads grew up

liden. why is it so many people in minnesota wind up going jihad? >> the groundwork for this was set back in 2007. we have a large somali community about 100,000 people and a small part was radicalized in 2007 and 24 people left minnesota to fight for al shabab in somalia. that groundwork was already there and in 2014 a pivot towards isis, and what this new house report brings up which is why we're talking about this is the role of social media. that's really what's changed here from 2007 with our young men to 2014. we had a man who left back here in 2014, may of 2014 by the name of abdi noor, he was fighting for isis for a few weeks he tweeted back to his friends in minnesota saying hey it's great here. we are fighting the caliphate. you need to get out here and

join us in syria and before you know it, eight of his friends were also plotting to go join him in syria. they were apprehended, they never made it. seven of them indicted, one is a cooperating witness, three have pled guilty. i think what this new report misses, though, it captures the social media component, but i've been covering this from 2007, i don't think it quite captures the fact that on the ground here in minnesota, what we may not have recruiters and such, we do have people who are ideologically grooming these young men telling them it's part of their religion that they need to go to syria, they need to fight, they need to do everything they can to make sure the caliphate comes true. that's hard to get at because of the freedom of religion, freedom of expression. that's the missing component right here, right now. >> so identifying them is really everybody can have a twitter account and read this stuff but figuring out who they are, the groomers, that's the problem. >> it is absolutely it's the problem. it's very difficult to get at that. we have an anti-radicalization
