tv   The Five  FOX News  October 13, 2015 2:00pm-3:01pm PDT

2:00 pm
in 2010. >> kaitlyn, thank you very much, we appreciate it. true to form by the way, donald trump has already treated about her interview and about barry diller's criticisms of him. saying if barry diller moves out of the country, it's a win-win. hello, i'm kimberly guilfoyle along with julie raginski, eric bolling, dana perino and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." it's round one to the democrats, set to roll the dice in las vegas tonight. and a little more than three hours from now, five democratic candidates will take the debate stage in their first showdown of the 2016 election. the stakes are high for front-runner hillary clinton. but should the audience believe a word she says? here's a refresher on some of clinton's flip flops and contradictions on issues over the years. >> i believe that marriage is
2:01 pm
not just a bond, but a sacred bond between a man and a woman. >> i support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. i support it personally and as a matter of policy and law. >> so it is with conviction that i support this resolution as being in the best interests of our nation. i've made it very clear that i made a mistake, plain and simple. >> i did not email any classified material to anyone on my email. there is no classified materials. >> a second review by the intelligence community has found that two emails in clinton's server, including one about north korea's nuclear weapons program did in fact contain highly classified information when she received them. >> the so-called tpp will lower barriers, raise standards and drive long term growth across the region. >> as of today, i am not in
2:02 pm
favor of what i have learned about it. >> well, so that's just a little snippet, in case you had a little bit of a mind fuzz on hillary and shall we say her loose relationship with the truth. >> well everyone has the right to their opinion and to change their opinion. but she has abused the privilege over and over again. i would try to nail her down on a few of these things. it will be interesting to see if any of the other democratic candidates actually go after her on her record. and her vacillations. i think that you might see governor o'mally, the former governor of maryland. he might take a shot like that and greg has thoughts on somebody else that might decide to jump in by all accounts, the debate is lowering expectations for entertainment of this debate, are getting any good information out or understanding anything about how any of these candidates would actually want to govern the country. >> i mean i don't think the bar is set so high tonight if they
2:03 pm
perform at all. they may perhaps exceed expectations. greg, what you got? >> that's been my goal in life. set low expectations. she's like shaquille o'neal's sandal, a big flip-flop. we'll be right back. i agree it could be very boring. no one wants to pick on her because she might win. it's like how you always want to be nice to the guy in i.t. because he could ruin your life. when you're on the phone, you don't want to be mean to him, because he could put porn on your computer. not that i know. you say o'malley, i say jim webb. here's why, i say jim webb is the true outsider on the days. he's not a socialist. he's separate from all the other four. he's a war hero, which also makes him an outsider on that. and he could make hillary's first debate, and this is a prediction, that is way off, but it could be her last debate. if he comes at her on national security, like a focused laser and says, you are not equipped
2:04 pm
to be president, because we, we can't even trust you with emails. if he goes at her like that, she's gone, he goes up to like second place. that's my prediction. >> let's go to our insider, eric bolling. the mmos, man on the strip. >> i think that would be a long shot, at the very least. >> most people don't even know he's running. >> that helps. >> it's one in two right now. it's hillary and bernie and guess who is third? joe biden who is allegedly not even going to be there tonight. i think you're right, webb and chafee and o'malley need to do something to get recognized, just to stay in the race. i think that's not going to end up happening. >> they should have an empty podium. >> they do, off to the side. >> that would be the polling after. >> the biggest news of today isn't about biden, isn't about hillary clinton. the biggest news of today is about donald trump is going to host "saturday night live" in a month. he even upstaged the democrats on the day, on their big day.
2:05 pm
i think it's going to be boring. i agree with you. i think if, if bernie sanders is in it to win it, he'll go after her on all the emails. he will nail her on emails. the people on the left will say if that were the case, he wouldn't want to do that because it would look like he would be helping the republicans. if bernie is in it to win it he'll go after that remember, it wasn't a vast right wing conspiracy that unearthed a lot of the email scandals, it was "the new york times." he should hang it on the "new york times" and say look, did you do it? give us an explanation of what really happened. if he's in it 0 to win it, he'll go after her. if not, it's all a big scam, and just hand her the nomination. >> maybe o'malley will do it or webb. >> no, no, he's got to do it. they can't. they're done. >> somebody's got to do it. >> o'malley, webb and chafee are not going to be the democratic nominees. they're just not if anyone is going to do it they've got to be
2:06 pm
biden or bernie. >> here's the problem, if i'm in debate prep here's what i'm concerned about, every time someone goes after her in a debate, it backfires on them. remember when rick lazio tried to hand her the piece of paper. you know it's very hard when you're debating a woman, to not appear to be a bully and i think that's the challenge for all of them. i that i think is the problem they're facing in debate prep as to how to handle them. >> you think bernie could be a bully? >> yeah. i think he could come across as a mad scientist bully. >> is that a halloween costume? >> dressing up as mad bernie from brooklyn. but you're right, someone is going to have to go after her. >> a person who could come from a national security perspective. this guy won a navy cross, he was in vietnam. he was a reagan appointee. he's got -- now sanders. >> but in the democratic primary, he's to the right of
2:07 pm
her national security and that doesn't help. >> however, sanders is going by this idea of being an outsider, he's been running for office for 40 years. he hates big business, but his big business is government. he is, he's a crony communist. is there such a thing? he's a crony communist. >> that's a thing. >> there you go. >> i'm taking off now. >> it sounds like you're a little bit jonesing for webb. >> i'm interested in him. he has a flaw, he wrote some fiction books, in which the sex scenes are a little unusual. >> tell us more. >> let me read some. sally? >> i'm not, but anyway -- >> that's the only -- >> you think that's going to hurt him? >> it might help him. >> it could help him. >> in like the romance harlequin department. with your friend fabio on the cover. true story. dana, i want to talk to you a little bit about biden. talk a little bit about biden. in the new polling and everything that's come out. he actually does better than
2:08 pm
hillary in head-to-head match-ups with the gop candidates. yet, this is man who still has not announced his candidacy. everybody is sort on the wait and see. and you see the poll numbers up there. if you're someone in the democratic party, wouldn't you be thinking of switching horses when you see these kind of numbers? >> well you know the democratic race is really boring when the media is basically writing stories and spending money to ask questions in a poll about somebody who is not even a delayered candidate. even though there's been some flirtation and i know it was mentioned sort of from his camp that he would be making a decision this month and he kind of has to. because there are some logistical things that have to happen if you want to be on the ballot in some of these states. i also think a lot of those numbers for him, it's actually name i.d. for the most part. he's more popular or he's more well known, therefore people say biden, i could be for him because people are still shopping around. not a good thing for hillary, if people are still willing to shop around and they're not satisfied with her. >> and numbers show that people
2:09 pm
find him to be more likable, trustworthy. >> and her numbers are declining in that area and she's losing with women now as well. she's dropped some points. >> biden is coming up like this, because biden has always seemed genuine. you might like him or dislike him, he never kromscomes across phony. >> how much in the debate prep for somebody like a hillary clinton, what's going on behind the scenes now? does she like a lot of prep? is she saying this is not my first rodeo, i've got this, don't bother me any more. >> she's got amazing doing debate prep. i know some of them and spoke to some of them. she's always prepared. she's always a student that's very prepared. >> what kind of software are they inserting into her back? >> it's interesting. that's a great question. i'm going to get back to you. i'll let you know. >> the likeability chip. >> jim henson will be there work the strings. >> but i think she doesn't want to do a lot of debate prep. she also needs to get.
2:10 pm
my understanding is in debate prep, prior debate preps she would get a lot of her aggression out at questions she didn't like to hear on the debate staff and she could be calm during debate. >> too bad she didn't tell her staff fix the email scandal. because that's a problem. the interesting thing you showed about the number, that biden was beating every single one of those republican candidates. hillary was losing to every one of them as well. joe biden is paying this perfectly right. tonight if hillary has a horrible showing there's going to be even further outcrime for him to get into the race. he needs to come in with a whole bunch of wind in his sails and a lot of money. if she has a terrific showing, he'll say maybe it's not the right time for me to be doing this i think one of the subtexts going on today, debbie wasserman schultz versus the vice chair. disinvited the vice chair, the vice chair -- chelsea gabbert.
2:11 pm
disinvited her because chelsea gabbert suggested more debates. now wasserman-schultz pushed back and said there will only be six. it seems like they want fewer debates, fewer opportunities for hillary to lose her lead. >> it's called message discipline. >> debbie wasserman-schultz has to understand that she's not the leader of the democratic party. >> i think hillary is going to shine tonight. and the media will delight in writing the stories of don't count her out. >> maybe they'll delight regardless. >> she has this thing when people ask her questions, she comes off as an angry customer at the airline counter. they're mad because their flight got canceled and she takes it out on the person behind the counter who has no control. >> one interesting aspect for
2:12 pm
the debate. better than the questions coming from anderson cooper is the facebook stuff. >> you mean donald trump is going to live tweet? >> no, don lemon is going to take questions from facebook. that's america's voice. >> how they're phrased versus the ones coming from the moderator. >> i hate it when they take questions from facebook. >> we've got to take my jump shot. next will the democratic candidate defend or distance themselves from president obama's foreign policy missteps at the debate tonight. a programming note -- stay tuned to fox news tonight for the best live post debate analysis anywhere with the kelly file at a special time of 11:00 p.m. eastern followed by sean hannity at midnight eastern.

over seven years in office, president obama has been steadfast in his belief that his vision for america's role in the world is the right one. despite his contentions, global threats like isis, syria, russia and iran have seen their influence on the world stage grow. this week the president attempted to defend his record on an increasingly long list of missteps.
2:17 pm
>> you said that this would degrade and eventually destroy isis. >> over time. >> over time. >> yeah. >> it's been a year and -- >> i didn't say it was going to be done in a year. >> you got a half a million dollars from congress to train and equip 5,000 and at the end, according to the commander of centcom, you got 50 people, most of whom are dead or deserted. he said four or five -- >> steve, this is why i've been skeptical from the get-go. >> if you were skeptical of the program defined and identified train and equip modern syrians, whi did you go through the program? >> part of what we have to do is try different things. >> the situation in afghanistan is very precarious and the taliban is on the march again. and isis controls a large part of syria. they say you're projecting weakness, not strength. >> you're saying "they" but you're not citing too many folks. >> i would say saudis, i would say the israelis, i would say a
2:18 pm
lot of our friends in the middle east. i would say everybody in the republican party. >> if you're saying the republican party, i think it's fair to say there's nothing i've done right over the last seven or eight years. >> do you think the world is a safer place? >> america is a safer place. >> these issues are likely to come up in tonight's debate. the question becomes will the democratic candidates on stage defend or distance themselves from president obama. >> you have to walk a fine line and have your own ideas and principles and be able to articulate is in a way that's persuasive to the american people. hillary is going to have the biggest challenge because she's the most tethered to the president. she's going to have to distinguish herself, especially as it relates to matters of national security and foreign policy where the president has not enjoyed broad-based enthusiasm or praise so that's going to be the most challenging part for her. there's a few areas where she could say that she deferred from the president. but she also dant want to poke
2:19 pm
the cage too much to make a problem fof herself going forward. or a barack obama loyalist if they feel she's disrespectful to the president, might say joe's looking even better right now. >> jim webb, the senator who almost nobody knows he's running, he'll be on the stage, so he'll have a chance. i think he'll try to difficulty fr distance from obama and clinton, but take a whack at republicans. >> i think they're going to go, you can't leave foreign policy to these children because they really are children. this is a mindset, the white house mindset is one that all the world's problems originate with america, and therefore, we must retreat and fix ourselves. we need eight, seven and a half years of obama therapy. while we're in this therapy, the world laughed, mocked and killed in that spot that we played, he admitted that funding the rebels was a bad idea, it was destined
2:20 pm
to fail. he treated it like a teen doing community service. he just gave the bare minimum. knowing it wouldn't work and no one would ever ask for it again it was really kind of sad. he didn't want it to succeed. >> i would like to talk about this more, but i have additional questions to get to. steve croft in the interview, he was asking the president about how other people perceive us. and the president said name them and steve said i think. >> you can find anybody in that world that can defend the current state of affairs on american foreign policy. >> it's outside the administration, once again, outside the administration. then you can't because it's not working. i mean it's clear it's not working. the half a billion dollars that president obama just threw at a program that he thought wasn't going to work and kind of laughed it off. >> hillary clinton tonight i think she's going to try to
2:21 pm
big-foot president obama. i think she is going to say i was the one that put together the iran nuke deal. i think she's going to embrace it and say i'm the one that brought iran to the table and guarantees that iran won't have a nuke for the next decade or so. >> that doesn't seem ian seem -- >> that's her thing. >> she wants to push away from president obama, but she can't here. >> she wants to be the architect. >> she wants to take credit for it. and let it seem like president obama rode her coattails on the iran nuclear deal. >> when you're talking about democratic primary voters who are their primary audience, not just cnn's audience. they want to talk to democratic primary voters, what do they want to hear? is there a split amongst those voters? or do they tend to like what bernie sanders has to say? >> i think they tend to pose the iraq war. they tend to oppose intervention. they tend to give her credit for the iran deal, which she will take it she's going to talk about the fact that she
2:22 pm
negotiated the cease-fire in gaza. she's going to point to what she considers to be her foreign policy achievements and the president' that happened on her watch. she was asked during the republican debate. what are her achievements. she'll use it as an example to do that it will be a fine line for her. she has to separate herself from the president enough that she's not going to have that hanging around her neck. but at the same time she can't go out there and completely trash the foreign policy that once she was part of and two, she'll have to rely on a lot of his voters, and those are all obama supporters and she needs them. all right. directly ahead in a new interview, president obama vents his frustrations about christians and another shot at conservative media including yours truly at fox news.

here at the td ameritrade trader group, they work all the time. sup jj? working hard? working 24/7 on mobile trader, rated #1 trading app in the app store. it lets you trade stocks, options, futures... even advanced orders. and it offers more charts than a lot of the other competitors do in desktop. you work so late. i guess you don't see your family very much? i see them all the time. did you finish your derivative pricing model, honey? for all the confidence you need. td ameritrade. you got this.
2:27 pm
president obama just interviewed author marilyn robinson for the new york review of books. i know i'm excited. you guys? no. i wonder in our democracy and our sick discourse, are folks who take religion the most seriously sometimes also those who are suspicious of those not like them? >> in our democracy and our civic discourse, it seems as if folks who take religion the most seriously are sometimes also those who are suspicious of those not like them. >> now what religion could he be talking about? >> you've struggled with the fact that here in the united states, sometimes christian interpretation seems to posit an "us versus them," and those are
2:28 pm
sometimes the loudest voices. >> yeah. those crazy christians. they're always beheading and throws gays off buildings. but hey, that's obama doing the obama, never linking islam to terror and it's the cyst y'allians who are the real jerks, just like us at fox. >> people always i think were surprised about me connecting with folks in small town iowa. and the reason i did, was first of all i had the benefit that at the time nobody expected me to win. so i wasn't viewed through this prison of fox news and conservative media and making me scary. at the time i didn't think seem scary, other than just having a funny name. i seemed young. >> so conservative media made him scary. i guess by conservative media,
2:29 pm
he meant hillary, who was the first to recast him as a kenyan-born interloper. he forget who is started the divisiveness. remember the jab about americans clinging to guns and religion in 2008 what do you expect? an conflicted it's the preferred ridicule. it's far easier and cooler than calling out the real threats around the world. it's why grad students hate cops but not criminals, mock their parents, not radical professors and mock christians, but give a pass to the death cults. he says that we are polarizing, unaware that it's his smug perspective that polarizes most. using fox news and christians as a proxy for a nation that makes him wince, he's a drone honed in the faculty lounge as police are not bugs in the system, they are the system. maybe i'm just polarizing. >> i would like to make an apology to everybody in america who was forced to listen to that. dana, you said it he sounds like
2:30 pm
he's auditioning for npr. >> he won an emmy. >> when he read his book. he's got a very smooth voice. >> it was noise. it was nice. >> kimberly almost fell off her chair. >> they don't need ratings to stay alive. they have government funding. if they kept that any longer everybody would have -- turned half the audience. >> fox news again? really the sixth time he's said something negative about fox news in baseball we call it rabbit ears, when you're yelling at the other team and they can't play, they can't even perform on the field because they're so worried about what you're yelling at them, you know you've gotten to them, they've got rabbit ears, president obama has fox news rabbit ears. >> that was a new thing, it's like fox news snooze alert. what was happening there? droning on. >> he was interviewing an author who had wrote a book of fiction about a minister. he was asking her religious
2:31 pm
questions. but the questions seemed only about the faults of christianity in america. >> to be fair, he was actually quoting her i think in those first two things. that wasn't what he was saying, she had said it. he was asking the question -- >> i prefer to make an assumption that he was. >> that's a great assumption to make, i'm not sure about that. but the dulcet tones lulled me. >> we can make an assumption based on the fact that he's never said things like that about islam. when i was listening to it, i go like in the era of isis, when he goes in this direction, it makes him look like he's a bit ignorant. >> was he going in this direction? or was he asking her about her views on this, because he was paraphrasing what she was saying. >> he was agreeing with her. >> shall we stop? >> no, we're going to do the rest of the show. do the rest of the show about -- >> you have to make it about
2:32 pm
other people's shortcomings, because he can't turn the mirror on himself. the reason he doesn't connect with the america people because of his failed policies and his incessant tendency to lecture the american people that he knows better than they do about everything and that their religions are bad. it's very frustrating. not a welcoming approach. >> i thought he had a good answer on the question, when he was talking about how people were surprised that he connected with folks in iowa. one of the things he said is, i had time. he spent a lot of time in iowa. it's one of the things it takes to win there you've got to show up, shake the hands, eat the doughnuts and the coffee. make sure they get to know people and one-on-one, i think they were won over on the democratic side. >> until we got there and maim him scary. this is something i've said a million times. he's like the quarterback who seduced every cheerleader but
2:33 pm
one and that's fox news. and he's like i got to have that one. i'm trying to interject energy into this segment. >> i really think that it's so interesting to me how he started off, just decided to be combative early on and he could have co-opted a lot of republicans early on. even on obama care. he couldn't get a single republican on bmo care, not even from the state of maine. you're the president, you used to be the press secretary, why go after fox news. >> never, ever did we mention msnbc. >> what do you get out of it? other than motivating your base? >> i mean that he feels like it works for him and it makes him feel good. >> it's a proxy for certain things he doesn't like about america. >> okay, it's true. singer pharrell williams endorses someone in 2016. colbert rips the media. joe biden five. i'm reading this wonderfully and

"playboy" magazine is getting a makeover.

welcome back. time for -- the fastest seven minutes on television. three brash stories, seven blistering minutes, one buoyant host. celebrities and musicians are historically democrats or progressives, pop star pharrell says he's enboresing hillary because she's, wait for it, holistic. >> time for a woman to be in there. because you know what? women think about things in a holistic way. that's not just so individual and i'm saying the thing is if we had somebody looking after our country, that thought about things as a whole, i just feel like it just would be different. not that i don't love our current president.
2:39 pm
i just feel like it's hillary time. >> all right. craig, you want to take it? >> his reasoning is clearly sexist. what if he had said i want this candidate because he's a man. because a man is objective and doesn't let emotion get into his decision-making. what he is saying i want her as a woman because she's holistic. she looks at it from a more emotional wholistic sense. which is sexist. if you're not a farmer, you don't wear overalls, you wear overalls because you got a tough job. he doesn't use a tough job and it's very hard to use a public bath room with overalls. >> t.i. said he would never vote for a woman because she was too emoeks moegsal, that's ridiculous. >> you don't choose based on
2:40 pm
gender. >> you know we're going to have to give awe lay-up, because you're a woman, you checked the female box, otherwise you wouldn't be good enough to vote for? >> we don't need the charity vote. >> i would agree with you, what you're saying but the way that pharrell said that is hugely persuasive. >> it's time for a woman, pharrell said it and they say that they like their approach. women make up 53% of the electorate. so republicans better not underestimate the power of what pharrell said. >> we know cnn has a podium or lectern ready and waiting for joe biden. even though he reportedly is attending a a high school reunion. colbert had so the fun with this. >> give him a toss, could biden fly to vegas, put on his aviator sunglasses and stride into the
2:41 pm
room? could he make eye contact with a certain reporter. could they end up chatting and getting along, going out for beers, and before they even know it, the sun is coming up and they've talked all night. and could biden then ask, do you ever think about reporting from space? and could he send that reporter up in a rocket to become the first pulitzer prize ever from the moon? that would totally shake up the campaign. >> i would love this so much, you don't have an idea if he just went in there and just crushed it. if you remember, he's pretty good in the debate. last time, he everybody was like underestimating joe. he goes in there, just walks in like vegas style and what happens in vegas, stays in vegas. but what do cnn think, are they smoking crack? >> are you calling them the crack news network? >> yes. because anybody thinks that they can show up at a presidential debate without doing days and
2:42 pm
days of prep, wakes up and says hmm, i think i'll go to vegas today. >> maybe the viewers, six, seven million without joe. with joe, bumping up to 10 million. >> they wish. >> could you come to a debate and not have substantive answers and still win it. >> you got to figure out how not to give substantive answers and still win it. that's the problem. >> what is it saying, compared to the republican field, the dems as a talent show at a mortuary, they're just looking for a spark to set fire to this thing. it's as dry as a cadaver's tears. >> greg is going to take this one. "playboy" magazine has says naked pictures are pass say and will focus on fashion, culture and lifestyle articles. good for you, "playboy," they've always been at it than the "rolling stone" magazine. now greg and i can read the magazine with our wives. >> it will be like "people" magazine. >> no, it's not.
2:43 pm
let's be clear about what people never say about "playboy" on television. it was an instrument for onanism. and the industry co-opted that instrument for self-gratification. there's no necessity for lonely men or teenagers to use the magazine. it was used for only one thing. >> you didn't like the article? >> i'm being completely honest, i think they do a better job of the cultural lifestyle -- >> i never had any interest. it seems like a sad magazine for me. it seems like for men who would sit around in a bath robe. >> you wear your shorty robe all the time. >> shorty robes are different, kimberly. how dare you. >> as a magazine for guys that hang out at the hef mansion, that smell and have hair in the wrong places. >> it's like -- bad. >> okay, waxer. >> this is so funny. and ironic coming from the king
2:44 pm
of men's magazines. >> "men's health" "maxim." >> they were smarter and funnier. >> except if you were the vp of "playboy." >> actually think about this less than sports. >> i don't know anything about this, but we'll be able to figure out whether people really do read it for articles or not. >> it's gone. i think it's just gone. >> but if they went the other direction, like penthouse, they would be gone faster. >> they've got higher numbers than the younger age bracket now. overall, their circulation is declining. >> the circulation is declining in many ways. >> no, that's just you. after encouraging the gop, scroll, candidates, to duke it out in last month's debate, did cnn just reveal plans to go easy on the dems tonight? details on tonight's debate

jake tapper dished about his intentions for the event. my team and i have been working hard and coming up with questions that i think are going to be tough and pit the candidates against each other. >> tonight's moderator, anderson cooper reveals plans for a different approach for the democratic candidates. >> i don't think this is a debate where you're going to have candidates attack each other. i'm uncomfortable with the notion of setting people up in order to promote some sort of a face-off. i think these are all serious people, this is a serious debate. they want to talk about the issues and i want to give them an opportunity to do that. >> cnn going easy on democrats after pitting the gop against each other? kimberly, you raised a good point this to me was more a slam at jake tapper than it was a slam at anything else. >> sorry we did the weird awkward social experiment, totally bulleted. he's going to clean it up, and go in and be dignified, sweet anderson cooper, who i worked with for several years.
