airplanes, they were flying airplanes. you have to have some kind of a whistle-blower system for this stuff so we find out about it. we had no whistle-blower system, but when you look back, look, after the attack, we did the wrong thing because we went after destabilized, we didn't like sd sd but it was a hell of a lot better than than -- we spent $2,000 in iraq. >> looking at iraq debated books on books on 9/11 and the 9/11 report that goes into detail. if you have the 2015 mind-set and you could put it in 2000, a lot of the stuff you're saying is valid but if you put us back in 2000, you look at the debates between gore and bush, they weren't even talking al qaeda. . in the big picture the systems put in place during the bush years were still ben fitting from, in terms of tracking down al qaeda. >> do you deny that? >> but brian, if you go back -- i can only, yes, elisabeth, i can only speak to myself.

on your show and it raises this whole question about fighting 9/11 and the security after 9/11 and what it does is it draws jeb bush into this battle with donald trump defending his brother. that's a position probably mr. trump likes to see jeb bush in. you would think this would raise all kinds of controversies in the republican party by going down this route, but you know, for donald trump, he says things that are controversial in the party, but don't seem to affect him in the polls and i bet you this is one of them as well. >> is this indicative of his long-term site on the general election? is he being presumptive here? i'll be the nominee and lay the groundwork against hillary clinton because she supported our move into iraq. >> i think so. it lays his predicate that he wants to say that he was against the iraq war from the beginning. i will say he points back to 2004, after the war started, and

this reuters article and then there is something in 2003 where he's on a red carpet and says it's a mess. but i don't know if we found anything prior to the war beginning in 2003 yet documented where donald trump is laying out his foreign policy thoughts, as a reality tv star. i think that he has really connected and when he says something like this, it really forces other candidates to react, too. >> we did this over the weekend, they had the huge tony perkins event and he did get the biggest crowd, the biggest ovation and the longest line. everything he said in the superlatives, another case in which it added up and the polls show him on top. let's talk about what's unfolding in jerusalem and israel and the palestinians. more violence the soldier kid when a terrorist opens up foo irin a bus station today, just the latest, brett, as you know in the string of attacks by palestinians with using their cars, using knives and in some

cases guns. secretary of state kerry is going over there but so far, not getting close to quelling the violence. what could the administration o do. >> the president talked about this at the news conference from i with the south korean president. he referred twice to it as random violence, and that raised some eyebrows and i think some israelis were upset saying this is not random, it's targeted violence. hamas calls for a day of rage and that ensues the rest of the day. i think there are promising signals from both sides, from netanyahu and abbas to sit down and talk but let's remember that the palestinians are split. you have abbas in the west bank, you have hamas in gaza, and mahmoud abbas doesn't necessarily speak for everyone when it comes to stopping the violence. >> brett, do you think this spal tinian/israeli issue ultimately becomes a campaign issue where

it is right now? >> i think it potentially does, and some of the things this administration has done with the israeli, with the iran deal, with how they are perceived potentially reflects on the next democratic nominee, whether it be hillary clinton or potentially if joe biden gets in, obviously it would be a third term question. >> i think the democrats are going to have a hard time getting that traditional american jewish vote judging by the way the president has not gotten along with the prime minister of israel who seems more comfortable now in moscow than he does in america. >> he went there first before he came to the u.s., and i think that goes to the whole question of the geopolitical influence of vladimir putin in the middle east. >> you have selected your panel for tonight's special report? >> i have. it's on the calendar somewhere. i couldn't tell you who it is but charles will be here. >> that's all you need. >> we'll be watching.

here with the inside story sal polici author of "the sinatra club: my life inside the new york mafia." welcome sal. >> good morning, brian, how are you? >> good, sal. i'm intrigued about this trial, isn't this a lay-up, the guy looks guilty? >> well, i got to tell you, you know, i was there and i was friends with tommy disimone, the character that pesci played and i knew about that robbery before it took place. what nobody really knows is they never figured that it was going to be $5.8 million and the character that de niro plays was an astute gangster and vicious and once the money got in their hands everybody went a little bit berzerk. jimmy started killing people and before you know it, we got 1,000 new york fbi agents so a lot of them out there in the park, it was just three blocks from where i live and we were within the whole element of that robbery.

it was unbelievable what was going on then. so the entire community was fascinated with, enom yared with it. little did anybody know the fbi was saving this material. here we are 37 years later. of course the real question, brian, is like tom cruise said, "show me the money." where is the money? >> exactly. >> now we have modern technology, we've got forensics and i believe they're going to bring this case, you know, to court and to trial, and they're going to show that we have these new witnesses that weren't available 35 years ago. >> sal, look straight ahead. makes it look more like a conversation into the camera. >> all right. >> sal, here used to be an honor among thieves and that's the one thing that came out of this. you used to keep a secret and now everyone turned on each other, that's what comes out of this. >> absolutely. but you got to realize, brian, the whole thing was about greed, power, money, and murder, and so as the thing started to unfold,

it just became so, the murders became so escalated with jimmy burke killing off all these people that the government was absolutely, the fbi was absolutely, you know, shocked by all these murders, so these things unfolded and after all these years, some of the witnesses are going to come up and give new information. it should be like a hollywood drama in this courtroom. >> right, i understand he even has tattoos that indicate he's in the mob. he can cover them up. in the end, i think that this is something that people are more interested in the information that comes out, then actually what happens to this guy, asaro, kr ekt correct? >> right. vinny was not the brightest crayon in the box he's 80 years old and like whity bulger, what is the government's intention to resolve and put closure into the case? we're talking about like nine murders. the statute of limitation on murder never runs out. i think we'll find out things

and overhand holding. why are all those things bad? >> they all achieve a short term win for a kid. if you're overprotective you prevent a kid from skinning their knee. if you're overdirective you might force them toward getting a higher grade. if you're doing a lot of hand holding you're making life easier for them. there's a short term win but there's a long-term cost. if you keep doing that for your kid, your kid never has the skill to do it for themselves and then they end up 18, 20, 22 out in the world and they're bewildered, they still need mom or dad to be on the sidelines kind of managing things for them. >> stanford is an elite student body you have. did you see some of that over there? >> i sure did. i saw students who were very, very accomplished in a resume and transcript sense who were still counting on mom or dad to kind of point them in the right direction in life and maybe smooth out some of the rough spots, but this wasn't just a stanford thing.

i would talk to colleagues at colleges around the nation, and everybody was seeing this in at last decade. the encroachment of parents into the lives of college students, which made us say what -- this can't be good for the college student and for society. >> what do with he do, how do we change this? you have a couple of tips for parents. stop saying "we." what do you mean by that? >> too afternoon our own egos are intertwined with our kids' experience so we say we're on the travel soccer team. we've gotten our college apps in. the point is no, that's your son or your daughter's experience. let them have that experience and be attuned to the fact that you're basically saying my life is their life. their life is my life. that's really unhealthy. >> you also say teach children how to talk to adults. what do you mean by that? >> we're arguing with teachers, principals, coaches and referees, trying to make every moment perfect by having those conversations on our kids' behalf. take the long view.

you've got to teach your kid to advocate for themselves with authority figures. >> you say let them do their own homework. >> brian said that to me before. >> i'm a big believer in this. >> that's a no brainer i think. too often today because parents are so concerned that kids get the right grade, they're cleaning up the math homework, rewriting the essay, they're outright doing the science project. it's like we parents want to say look how good i am at being a fourth grader. but come on. it's unethical. the teachers don't know what the students in their classroom understand and worst of all, your kid thinks i'm not capable of doing anything unless my mom or dad fixes it for me. >> i stopped doing that because i no longer know how to do their homework. >> exactly. well you do get to that point. >> julie lipscott haines i hope my child has a dean, teachers like you, teaching you can't live in a bubble your entire life.

president obama doing an about-face on afghanistan. now committed to keeping u.s. troops there until 2017. >> it's modest but meaningful extension of our presence while sticking to our current narrow missions can make a real difference. it's the right thing to do. >> certainly an about-face. was this decision really the right thing to do? jeff m. smith director of asian security programs at the american foreign policy institute is here to weigh in. thank you very much for joining us. >> good to be here. >> what do you think? right move by the president? >> well, in some ways i think we get lost in the wrong debate here. i think the president is focused on whether or not we should keep troops in afghanistan and how many troops we should keep in afghanistan for how long, when in fact i think the more fundamental question we need to be asking is, can we win the afghanistan war, and can we accomplish our objectives, so long as pakistan is providing

safe haven and support to the taliban? >> you mentioned pakistan a great deal and sealing off the border has been a difficult thing to do. we can talk about that for quite some time. with 9,800 troops, with the 5,500 troops is it possible to deal with the terrorism threat in afghanistan the way we need to? >> so long as they have safe haven and support in a neighboring country, which is the equivalent of counter insurgency cryptonite, i'm not convinced we can, no. >> how much of this, obviously porous borders are difficult in afghanistan or iraq, which we're seeing now with the borders between iraq and syria. how much of this decision do you think is colored by what's happened in iraq after the president precipitously pulled all troops out of there and we saw the chaos that unfolded? >> it certainly may be a driving factor and i know his military commanders are advising a greater troop presence for an extended period of time, and frankly it's understandable why our presence there does make a difference, and it does help to

stabilize the situation, but yes. >> if you say it does make a difference in afghanistan, how many troops is the right amount of troops and how long? >> well, in that case i would defer to the u.s. military. >> more than 9,800, less than 9,800, and what mission? terrorism mission, going after al qaeda and the taliban, one of the other isis now, now in afghanistan? >> well, and frankly the hakani network, probably the most potent and deadly military group operating in afghanistan and pakistan. we should be focused on counterterrorism there, but i don't know that an extended and large troop presence can fundamentally make a difference until we fix our pakistan policy. >> there's certainly been a pakistan problem in afghanistan for quite some time not to be solved now. hopefully keeping a few troops in the country keeping a lid on a situation that continues to be tenuous in afghanistan and could go the way of iraq if not handled properly. jeff smith thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you.

quick head lines now, nearly seven corporate companies now signing on to fight climate change with the obama administration. the white house making the

announcement this morning part of a push by president obama to corral support for global climate deal this year. some of the companies include johnson & johnson, procter & gamble, nike, ikea and starbucks and donald trump and dr. ben carson both have requested protection from the u.s. secret service. it's a response to a heightened threat both men are receiving on the campaign trail. we're told the requests are likely to be approved this week. elisabeth? >> thanks, brian. here's a place you actually will want to get a ticket. officers in concord, massachusetts, are handing out citations for good behavior. people doing the right thing can redeem their tickets for ice cream. how great is that? part of a way for the police department to build a positive relationship with their community. joining me now, concord police chief joseph o connor. good morning to you. >> good morning elisabeth.

>> what can you get a good citation for? >> we've given wide discretion to our officers if they observe something in our community. child holding their parents' hand or people wearing seat belts, you know, people helping others. we want to give them wide discretion and recognize people that are doing things that are positive in our community. >> 200 of these citations sweets can be turned in for ice cream. great place donated the ice cream. what do you hope comes of this move right now? we see a lot of tension between police and civilians. >> we're fortunate we have a community that really supports us, but we really wanted to open up lines of communication. the officers that brought the issue forward and the idea they're officers that do a loot of enforcement parking and traffic and we're fortunate to have a business in town, reasons to be cheerful and owner wade rubenstein to step up and assist us where we have positive interactions with people in our community. >> when will the first citation be given?

>> the first one we've given out was an officer observed a child who was sitting well for the parent while she was helping her other children, and we had a couple more over the weekend, you know, young people wearing their helmets on their bicycles. we have a lot of people that use bicycles in our community and something that we wanted to recognize people for doing the right thing. >> when the officers are approaching the citizens, first are they a little hesitant maybe thinking they did something wrong? >> well, you know, people wonder at first, and we're not stopping cars. these are normal interactions that occur on the streets of our community, but very quickly, people learn what they are and they're really happy and brings a smile to the people on our community's faces. >> chief o'connor, going forward, do you hope more communities echo what you're doing there in concord? >> well, we hope that there's been a lot of people asking about, us about this and there's been some negative publicity about our profession over the last year or so, and we believe that overall, police in this
