>> beavers, pair shooting? why? they actually may be pair shoot over 50 years ago to spread out the beaver population. officials in idaho uncovered this amazing footage. none of them got hurt. thank you for being part of "the real story." >> the strongest hurricane that meteorologists have ever seen in this hemisphere headed to land, winds strong enough to lift cars off the street. now hurricane patricia ills about to hit land and millions of people are along this coast. we'll show you exactly what they believe will happen and we'll hear from an american who right now is trapped in his hotel there. plus, the four-year-old girl shot dead on the freeway, cops call it a case of road rage, and now we're hearing the accused shooter has a history of violence. and guess who is trumping trump? the donald is now not the leader in iowa. is this the beginning of a trend or just a hiccup for the donald? let's get to it.
12:01 pm
first from the fox news deck today, a catastrophic storm liking in we have season is in part of the world. a category 35 monster roaring towards mexico, threatening millions of lives. hurricane patricia has winds reaching nearly 200-miles-an-hour, that's sustained winds. strong enough to flip cars and shred buildings, level entire neighborhoods. forecasters say it's the strongest storm ever recorded in our hemisphere. this satellite illinois shows how well formed it is. nothing at all to break it apart as it roars toward the land, and landfall is expected tonight. that has families and tourists running out, time to find shelter and enough supplies to live through the aftermath. we'll show you where this thing is scheduled to hit. forecaster say it's headed north northeast a little bit.
12:02 pm
mexico jalisco state on the pacific state, this, it putter to -- putter to vieat to. a woman who there is say the hotel staff told her nothing is going to happen. by any airports are closed to and its too late to get out. one tourist prompt los angeles said it didn't sound that bad when he went to sleep last night and by morning everything changed. >> the city is not going to do well. probably going to take a direct hit. they said they can rank for a taxi for is this morning. so woe got up and'm they said it's too late, we ant can't get you out. so the city is erie right now. they are locking all the doors and say we have to be in our rooms and they suggest we stay in the bathroom and not come out until the storm is over. so, we are cooking rice and hard boiling eggs and we stocked up on water and cash. i'm a type 1 diabetic to had to
12:03 pm
make sure i had enough insulin. hard to say how long it's going to last. >> just one store of one group. hers a picture of the bathroom where they'll be hold up. he says pour is out and is turning to facebook for news on his cell phone. no telling how long the battery will last. we have more images in our slide show of people getting ready. the biggest storm ever, the strongest winds in any storm ever. it's not actually that big, which is good news. you can see workers trying to board up store fronts along the coast, hoping homes and businesses can withstand the 200-mile-per-hour winds and with the airport shut down, people scrambling to find other ways out you can see people lining up at bus stops to try to catch a ride inland, also pictures from space showing just how massive this thing is. look at this. it covers a chunk of the mexico coastline, and the band
12:04 pm
stretching to the gulf, but the worst of it all, the center of the storm where the worst winds are, that's another story. close to 200 miles an hour in the center of this thing. that's the picture from space. that's insane. devastation in the path put the path is not very wide. let's get to our chief meteorologist rick reithmuth. you hear 200-miles-an-hour winds and think this is going to wipe out the whole coast? >> going to wipe out the coast where that hits. never seen anything like that make landfall. the strongest storm we have scene in our part of the world. you hear about the strongest hurricane ever. i want to clarify. all of them are tropical cyclones. that's the name in general. we call them hurricanes around here. you good over towards the west pacific, philippines, taiwan, they call them typhoons, around the indian ocean they call them cyclones. the exact same thing. there have been stronger oneses in the western pacific but what we're talking in our area, this is the strongest we have ever seen.
12:05 pm
the center is so incredibly well defined and it's moving quickly. remember when you played with a top as a kid and spin it fast, it other then wobble and that's what this is doing. it took the right-hand turn, a left-hand turn, and think it will make another right-hand turn there and make landfall between port to vieat to and man san nil low. and super important to note. hurricanes strong but the hurricane force winds on this one only extend out 30 miles on either said. so goss from 200-miles-an-hour storm down to a 73-miles-an-hour tropical storm just within 30 miles. so where it hits, it's going to be catastrophic. fortunately where it's hitting is not a huge area. >> so that area -- if we go back to that. that area where the eye is, whatever gets hit by that, that's going to be trouble. >> really bad.
12:06 pm
>> not port to villarta. >> shouldn't be. we think it will make another wobble back here and thread the needle between the two towns. >> this is largely unincorporated. >> not a ton of people. some small communities and victims and they'll be in a world of hurt. whatever modify falls will flood quickly and it's going to move quickly and probably flood interior towns. >> sometime this wind gets you, sometimes the waves. >> and sometimes storm surge gets you. it's bad in that little spot. two things have going for it. it went from a tropical storm to a cat 5 hurricane in a day. that's unreal. but not had a lot of time, therefore to pile up a ton of water along with it. lime katrina did. and because it is so small where this strongest winds, are where there is storm surge it's small little area that sees that kind of storm surge. >> how much main in these areas? >> so in those areas probably talking a widespread signature
12:07 pm
to 12 inches of rain. want to tell you quickly, some of this moisture is going to make its way in toward eastern texas. we have been seeing halt of flooding there this week from a different system. we'll watch this moisture get pulled up across eastern texas where could be seeing flooding. >> get ready for that. man. >> interesting storm. >> really is. hope they're all out of there. thank you, rick. let's get to 2016 now. donald trump has taken a hit in the polls. two surveys put him in second place now in iowa, and it's really not -- it's not a stackal dead heat. he is in second place. a new "des moines register" poll is out today showing ben carson there with 28%, donald trump at 19%. and no other candidates coming close. nearly identical in a quinnipiac survey which has carson leading, 28 to 20%. so leading nye nine in one poll,
12:08 pm
eight by another. somebody on the trump campaign is not taking it well. retreating somebody's questioning whether iowa voters have, quote, issues in the brain. trump apologizes 'for the young intern. in august he said when he retweets, he retreats, quote, for a reason. he is in second place. tell us why his super pac is returning money to donors? >> well, they're not his super pacs. today he has told the super pac to give back any money you collected on my behalf and denounce them all. he says there are as many as nine. the fec had four or five registered. and all of this comes as of course he is self-funding, and just yesterday, one particular super pac that has actually used his own slogan, make america great again super pac, shut itself down, as questions were
12:09 pm
beginning to surface with his founder had ties too close with some of the trump team and that might essentially constitute prohibited coordination. so they end it all to make sure there wouldn't be anymore questions. trump is now telling other independent summer pacs they should give back the money which they don't have to listen to since they're not coordinating. >> now it makes sense. i'm reading that jeb! is cutting salaries. >> a lot of the campaigns are pinching pennies because their third quarter fun raising haul wasn't that big. this is a major reorganization for a campaign in serious trouble. he is good to try to caught $1 million a spending a mock and will do away with his hawker staff, going cut travel expenses by 20%, and he iscutting payroll by 4%. this is a serious recognition, even acknowledged in a campaign memo, they didn't anticipate the likes of trump, didn't expect to
12:10 pm
be where they are right now and have a very steep hill to climb to get out of it. on that poll with ben carson up ahead in iowa there, shep, what really seems to explain it is that carson is leading two to one in the low 30 percent range, with both christian conservative voters and tea party voters. christian conservatives hold sway in caucuses. >> andy is in now, politics reporter are "the boston globe" newspaper. thank you. >> hi there. >> wonder what donald trump is going to act like when he gets to second place? >> i know. seems like we're going to get an answer to that question. so much of donald trump's campaign has been about being number one. >> swagger. >> yes. swagger, and bragging. it's pointing to those numbers. he is somebody who looks at the polls very, very carefully, and now that you have not only see one but see two polls in iowa, it's going to -- it will
12:11 pm
certainly have a different tone, different kind of donald trump, i suppose. unless he is just going to try to write them off, but seeing two in a row like that, and we're not talking about a race that is neck and neck here. nine points, ten points, that's a real register, a real lead that carson has in iowa. >> what is driving -- from your reporting, what's driving carson voters? >> that is just such a fantastic question, and i think when you look at iowa, this is a state that traditionally goes for the christian conservatives, the evangelicals, who in the past have -- it's been on their support that a candidate has won that state, and i think you see them having looked at trump and realizing that maybe he does not have the same core conservative values that they want, but he is an outsider, and then moving to a different outsider who ben carson, for everything he is, he certainly has that core
12:12 pm
conservative message that these folks are looking for. >> but i the last cycle, those voters turn over spurt from one candidate to another week in and week out a couple of cycles ago. >> they did and that isn't what happened here. trump is still lead neglect national polls and it's just -- sort of that's like the last war and we're seeing a different war this time. what you have seen consistently is this enormous amount of support for those two outsiders and listening to the earlier discussion about jeb bush, who would have thought he would be in that position. but he doesn't have anything close to what trump and ben carson have itch think the whole notion of a humble trump is an interesting one. >> never seen it. but you never know. we have the strongest hurricane ever, maybe we'll find a humble trump. no breath-holding. annie from "boston globe." great to talk to you, thank you for coming. >> thank you. >> ahead, inspired by the

investigations across the united states targeting people suspected of supporting the islamic state. 900. according to reports to the "washington post" and "usathey e investigations have been, quote, slowly climbing, and that isis is trying to expand its reach in the united states. back in february, the fbi director revealed there were isis-related investigations in all 50 states. officials said isis has been recruiting young american men and women by targeting them on social media. a congressional study showed that more than 250 americans have traveled abroad to either join or try to join the islamic state and other terror groups. lea gabrielle is here. 900 investigations. that's crazy. >> and the fbi director is basically saying that one of his concerns is whether or not he'll have the resources to handle all of those. hearing a number specific live is somewhat new but we have been hearing the fbi say that upward trend has been there for some months. in fact you may remember in july
12:17 pm
when the fbi was expressing concerns around the july 4th july 4th holiday. i asked a former fbi agent for his analysis. here's what he had to say. >> could be because we now have a number of years of experience in dealing with this type of virtual radicalization, looking for people who may be prone to being susceptible to this time of radicalization. however, believe that the director is also indicating that this does suggest a general increase in the number of these incidents. >> if you're wondering how this estimate of 900 compares to what we saw after 9/11, back in 2003 "the new york times" did an article and said the fbi estimated the number of al qaeda operatives in the the u.s. to be around several hundred, and it also said a relatively small number of specific cases were under investigation. >> fewer americans are joining isis overseas? >> the fbi director mentioned this when he was on the hill. specifically in reverence to syria. he said that just six in the

paul ryan said it over and over and over again do. >> not want to be speaker of the house. i do not want it. i will not take it. today the new paul ryan is officially rung for speaker of the house. lot's changed between the two positions. we reported party leaders have been basically begging ryan to get in the race, earlier this week the congressman laid out conditions had to be hit. he didn't get all of them. he said he wanted endorsements from all the emergency republican caucuses, including
12:23 pm
the freedom caucus. they say no to everything and pushed speaker john boehner to retire and reject kevin mccarthy's attempts to take over. freedom caucus is now supporting ryan. not endorsing him. that's because ryan failed to get 80% support among the caucus members, and congressman ryan said he wants to make it more difficult, not impossible, but more difficult for lawmaker s to try to fire him on a whim. that would require change to the rarely used motion to vacate rule. so far the caucus has not backed off any kind of change. so far the house leadership elections are scheduled for next week, and conditions aside, the congressman told fellow republicans he believes he can overcome their differences. hearings a quote. we have an opportunity to turn the page to start with a clean slate and rebuild what has been lost. we can make the house a more open and inclusive body, one where every member can contribute to the legislative process. "fox news sunday" anchor chris
12:24 pm
wallace is with it. he wanted to travel less and he didn't want to give up all the power the tea partiers or freedom caucus said they wanted him to give up. right? >> yes elm he also wanted their support and an understanding. he didn't get anything that had been written out wouldn't have mattered. not like it's an enforceable contract. but he got a basic understanding they're going to work with him, support him. not going to try to undercut him. and i think that the house freedom caucus there, they're the insurgents, the more hardline conservatives, and i think they realize, having gotten rid of boehner and stopping mccarthy, paul ryan is a pretty conservative guy. there will be some people on the right who say he voted for the bank bailout, they t.a.r.p. bailout, and he at one point considered the possibility of immigration -- comprehensive immigration plan. he is about as conservative as you can get and i think they realized they would have the
12:25 pm
rest of the house caucus turn on them if they didn't take yes for an answer finally. >> now they've done it. what is next? >> as you say, there wasn't a formal endorsement. they made 80%. got 40 members so that would mean 32 members, got about 28 or 29 or 30. but what they say is the super majority supported him, and there's a basic truce. how long a truce will last, we'll have to wait and see. there's a basic truce and they're all going to go in and support paul ripe and, frankly, they're lucky to have him. paul ryan is a very quite consecutive, a very articulate spokesman for the republicans, and they got to all be up for re-election next november. he is not a bad person to lead the charge as the house members 247 house members try to seek re-election. >> what is going to happen when we get to this debt limit? that's the next big vote and then the right of the party does not want to raise it without conditions. >> well, i think the timing on
12:26 pm
that is really crucial because they were going to have a vote yesterday that would have been raising the debt limit, but in return for a big cut in spending. president obama said he is not going to make that kind of a deal, he would veto that. not going to bargain on a debt limit. and there was so much opposition from runs they had to pull it. i got to think that if i'm john boehner or if i'm paul ryan, want boehner to make that happen with democratic support before i ever take over the speakership, because that could be a really ugly scene. some people there are just aren't going to go for increasing the debt limit unless there's a big spending cut and obama says i won't negotiate on that. >> clear the deck for him. what do you make of donald trump now? what is his swag going to be like now? he is in two polls, in clearly in second place in iowa. >> well, it will be interesting to seem you're gallon right. he has led for three and a half months every poll.
12:27 pm
nationally, in the early states. now for the first time has fallen behind. it will be interesting to see how he reacts. we should point out, despite the two polls, he is still leading nationally, still leading in new hampshire and south carolina. so, it's not like his campaign is imploded but i agree. it will be interesting to see how he reacts to being in second place in a couple of polls. >> and there's a new leader of the pack. if you were planning a sunday talk show for this weekend, the new -- ben carson. who booked ben carson? chris wallace. we'll be watching. >> that's right. >> -- this "fox news sunday" this sunday. we reported two polls out of iowa show he is in the lead. trump in second. also, the ohio congressman, jim jordan will be there and talk on the program to talk about benghazi, hash tag benghazi, jazz hands, and former secretary of state hillary clinton's marathon testimony from yesterday. and congressman jordan a leader

american touristers stranded and scared. we heard from one who is trapped in port to vieat to. how are you doing. >> we're hanging in there so far. >> is it windy or rainy yet? i know the area of concern is small. what is it like where you are. >> i have to say it's very eerie and calm right now. i guess it's the proverbial calm before the storm. the leaves aren't even moving at all yet but there's a steady rain coming town and you can feel the humidity and the tension in the air. >> do you have a plan? >> well, the plan should have been not to come at all but unfortunately when left l.a. yesterday morning it was just predicted to be thunderstorms. it's incredible how quickly this developed. went from thunderstorms yesterday morning to a category 5 today. we got a phone call at 4:00 in the morning from the hotel staff saying we might want to evacuate this morning so we got up early and went down to the desk and they were making plans for us to
12:36 pm
get a car to go inland to god la ha rahr and by the time we came back up stairs to get our things and go back down they said it's too late. you're stuck here. so it developed very, very rapidly. >> if there's any good news here -- this is from our meteorologist -- say they think it's going to go -- make landful in an area between the two towns, and not heavily populated area, really away from most tourist centers and the worst of the winds are 25 miles from the center, hurricane force out to 20. how far -- are you in puerto vieat to proper? >> we're right in the middle of the continue. they have moved us to a -- we had an ocean view room. >> don't want that. >> definitely not. they moved to us a room at the back of the hotel. most of the americans that are here have been moved a little further away from the shoreline. and they're basically telling us that we should expect the
12:37 pm
strongest winds to hit within the next hour or two, and that we should remain in a bathroom, interior bathroom, until the storm passes and then they'll come to the room and let us know when it's safe to come out. >> what floor are you on? >> the hotel is up on a bluff. i don't know how familiar you of with the area but it does slope up on a hill. so we're up a bit from the oceanfront, and then we're on the third floor. so storm serge is not an issue for us. the bigger concern is the wind. >> hopefully the winds will be to the south. the worst of things with the hurricane, if you're looking at the storm, the worst is usually in this quadrant to the south and east of the eye. and really the best of it would be on the backside. we call this the dry side of the hurricane. the hurricanes go in that direction so you're getting the dry side, which suggests if it goes to your south and your east, then you get the winds coming from the land toward the shore and might be a best case we can hope.
12:38 pm
the truth is, this thing is wobbly and fog where it wants to go and aim guessing that's the reason for all the concern. >> ism think the hotel staff and the local authorities have been really good about trying to keep everybody calm and keep us feeling like they're going to take care of us. so i hope that it is true. >> we have some pictures of your shelter now for the next whatever, eight hours or so. this bathroom. how many of you are there? >> how many of you? uh-oh. well, there's a storm coming, and also it's the mexican coast, and those are -- neither one of those things are perfect for cells. those are facts. i'm sure they're fine. it's a normal concern with this storm can though, like with every storm. the tornado that spin off, the localized flashflooding. a hilly area where there's steep slopes and they're concern about mudslides. and this is going to be a bad storm.
12:39 pm
one of the weird things for those who cover such things is, it's going to be hard to get any information out of there for the next day or so. wherever this hits, this eye, wherever this goes ashore, that exact eye, that's not going to be pretty. anybody who is in south florida during andrew, certainly this storm is stronger than andrew but not much bigger than an true. andrew came ashore at 25-30-miles-an-hour. so going as fast as a car. it's moving fast, and it just leveled everything down in kindle in the southern part of miami-dade county. so where the eye comes ashore, it's bad. when you get out to the east and west and north and south of that, not as bad. federal auditors caught two vex secret service agents leaping on the job and warned joseph clancy that agenters overlooked and fatigued and struggling with low morale. reports indicate one sleeping agent was providing security at
