town near hawkinsville. he called a number of times. and he drove around midnight to ocilla. looked around her house and left his business card. i think he left maybe 15-20 messages on her house phone. >> monday october 24th over at erwin county high school students and teachers began their day. >> i have morning duty as i do every morning. all of the teachers come down the hall as they do i am greeting everybody. that particular morning one of our fellow co-workers came up and said hey has any one seen tara this morning? nobody had. >> i was running late and the school secretary called me. >> sandy mcclure taught at the same school as tara. >> she said tara was missing. i said what do you mean tara is missing? she said, no one knows where she is.

i tear into her house knock on the doors bang on the windows and her car is there. tara never went anywhere without her car. >> when she didn't show up in class we knew something wasn't right she never missed a day and not tell us before hand. >> we knew something was very, very wrong. tara is too committed to her students. there is no way she wouldn't have been at work without calling somebody. >> on the morning of october the 24th i received a telephone call. >> billy hancock is the chief of the 12 man ocila police force. >> iñ!xç immediately drove from police department approximately five blocks away and arrived at tara's house. what i saw when i first arrived was tara's car was obviously still parked under the car port. i saw the neighbor standing in the front doorway eawaiting my

approach. >> my neighbors had a key. >> joe and myrtle? >> yes. they had a key. they met the chief of police. >> the neighbor told me he had already been inside the house and tara was not there and he was concerned about her whereabouts. i began to search for tara. inside the house luke did this and she had been there earlier was no longer there. they had had a pageant the day before where girls were getting ready inside the house, curling irons and this sort of thing laying in the bathroom and july rye and that sort of stuff laying around the bed was unmade. phones still charged in the bed. >> we were still at school so we didn't know what was going on. we didn't intentionally keep it from the kids but we didn't broadcast it. there were scary scenarios going through people's minds. we didn't want to alarm the kids if we didn't have to.

we knew something was wrong. >> investigating the disappearance would have been complex. >> we have a small department we didn't have a crime scene technicians. they had close relationships. the ocilla pd called in gbi. >> gbi received request for assistance at 11:00 am on october 24th, -j2005. >> gary rothwell is a retired special agent of the gbi. >> i hadn't realized it was a major case so i sent everyone in it the office to understand. >> we had a forensic team coming in. >> the circumstances were such that the behavior did not match tara. it was clear there was a problem. that said we couldn't eliminate the possibility she had gone off on her own was upset or left for

some other reason. >> i think a lot of people in the beginning that knew she had been upset about the situation between her and marcus thought maybe she decided to get away for a while. >> i assumed she needed alone time. >> this happened on the heels of the infamous run away bride case in atlanta. >> a girl about the age of tara was engaged and she got cold fight and left. they had her missing and she was on national tv and it was a big thing. >> people that foul play occurred and she was found in albuquerque key alone in her free will. >> because the emotional statement tara had been in the previous week we weren't sure what may have happened. >> tara's case went national and the media got involved. >> did they notice it was broken? the sister may have knocked it over two weeks ago.

neighbor, teacher and loved one had vanished without a trace. >> after she was declared missing on a monday the whole town immediately centered around let's figure out what wick do. we even met at the hospital and we all searched. >> we all went looking for her and did fliers. it is not a huge town but it is a large area of country. >> what makes it very difficult is the number of bodies of water. >> there are a lot of swamps and ponds and places that are difficult to get to. they searched as good as they could. >> there are a lot of abandoned wells. >> wells in which a body could be deposited. >> we checked every well in the

did not recognize. i don't think that they have been able to track down the driver of the black truck. we don't have any knowledge of who it could be. >> a black pickup truck in rural georgia is exceptionally common. we didn't have any better descriptors than that. that was something we kept in contact and attempted to identify but weren't able to conclude anything based on that. >> any one have that happen kind of vehicle? >> marcus had a truck at that time. >> some people wanted to say it was him. the neighbors said it was not the same type of truck that marcus was driving. >> tara's ex-boyfriend the investigation immediately focused on him. >> marcus harper was the love of tara's life. he was something that we certainly had to look at closely and we did from the outset. >> the police weren't alone tara's sister anita had marcus

army ranger who was in ocilla at the time. marcus spoke to me about their relationship. >> we dated for about five and a half years. >> when you say dated was it serious or casual relationship? >> it was acv we did not date other people. i was honest with her when i said i had no intentions of marriage because of my career. >> did this come a time when this dating relationship ended? >> yes. she told me she felt like it was time for her >> you are getting dumped essentially. >> more or less. >> were you ep set by th-- upse by that at all? >> at first. we continued to remain friends but i felt a little rejected the a first, but i brushed my shoulders off and went on and started dating other people. she asked several times about rekindling the relationship. i told her we could stay friends

but i didn't want any kind of commitment. >> you were rejecting her essentially at this point. >> pretty much. >> did she accept that. >> how many times have you talked to gbi? >> four, five times. >> they have asked you for things and asked you to talk you have provided all of it. >> at the time i spoke with marcus's lawyer thomas. >> marcus called me one day when this first broke out and told me that he had been going to the jail and tara's sister was there and made an accusation against him. >> i said, what the hell have you done with my sister? >> i felt concerned that accusation had been made down at the jail in front of the officers he might need some assistance. >> is there anything that your client has knotted agreed to do that the gbi asked? >> marcus harper was cooperative. we secured dna samples polygraph examinations, fingerprints all of the sorts of things we did

with any one else associated with tara that we deemed important enough. marcus. >> he gave police an alibi for the night tear roy was last seen. he first visited the waut house bar. he spent late evening driving around ocilla in a cop car on police patrol. something allowed in a small town. >> we interviewed everyone we could identify having associated with him during the time and that alibi held up. >> when was the last time you actually saw her? >> the 149 of -- 14th of october around 9:00. >> what were the circumstances? >> she woke me by knocking ohhen my windows. >> is that something common where she would knock on your windows or not? or is that unusual? >> it's not unusual.

dozen men with whom she had gone out or some sort of romantic involvement recently. >> the investigators also looked at a former student of tara's named anthony vickers. >> there was a 20-year-old former student with whom tara had some sort of relationship that was very suspicious to people that knew her. most suspected there was a romantic involvement. >> i think he was very infatuated with tara. she had spent extra time tutoring him. i think he had a bad family life. he saw that as that newer fewering as maybe something romantic. >> there was an incident where anthony came over to tear rae aw -- tara's house beating on the door trying to get her to open the door. >> did the student actually get into the house? >> no he did not. >> was she home at the time? >> she was home. neighbors called the police. she was trying to gtalk him int
