3:46 am
>> good morning. thank you. >> first of all, let's read you the statement from the bremerton school district. they say, the district cannot allow an employee, while still on duty, to engage in religious conduct or display that a reasonable observer, aware of the context, would perceive as district endorsement of religion. my question is, from what i understand, he would go out and he would kneel on the field, at some point he did say -- he was vocal, then he became silent about it. some of the football players themselves would go out and pray with him. members of opposing football teams would go out and pray with him. it sounds to many that he wouldn't force the issue, he was just merely doing something and other people followed. how is this in any way some sort of first amendment issue? >> this is ludicrous. let's look at the facts. for the last seven years the coach had been going to the 50 yard line, after the game, to privately pray, and no student was coerced to join him, though
3:47 am
some joined him voluntarily. finally one person complained, and so the school district told him you can't do this any longer, or, we'll provide a small, private room where you can pray so nobody can see you. well, i'm sorry, but the first amendment doesn't restrict the free exercise of religion to a broom closet. and you know, people say well, employers have rights over their employees. they have lots of rights. but they never have the right to violate the first amendment right of the freedom of religion, a freedom that our founders called our first and most basic freedom. >> you know, we've been talking about this now for years. i mean we've been talking about not just on football fields, it's the nativity scenes, you know, in the middle of the town square. you know, what kind of ramifications does this particular incident or situation have? do you think, will it have for high schools across the country, and other situations where you're dealing with students, you know, who are just trying to -- they want to exercise their religion as well, they want to pray before the game? >> you brought up an excellent point.
