tain muscle. all with a great taste. i don't plan on slowing down any time soon. stay strong. stay active with boost®. time for "sunday house call." >> welcome. joining us, of course, is dr. david samadi, pchief of robotic surgery. >> and dr. marc siegel, also author of the inner pulse, unlocking the secret code of sickness and health. >> good to see you both. we're going to start with this. this is a -- they're calling it a bombshell finding from the world health organization, showing a direct link between eating processed meats, like cold cuts, hotdogs, bacon, to
9:31 am
colon cancer. dr. samadi, didn't we already know this? why is this a big deal? >> we've talked about this so many times, the fact that there is a strong link between red meat and colon cancer. 50,000 people actually die from colorectal cancer. the world health organization is finally officially making it that after looking at 800 different studies, all of the warnings that you mentioned, processed meat, bacon is on the pyramid, is now as bad as smoking. it's a real carcinogenic. this is huge news for a lot of people who love red meat, steak, processed meat. you have to just use moderation. and pay attention. >> hod ration. >> we see that the amount of red meat that you're taking is also correlated to the risk. the more you eat, the higher rate of colorectal. >> for women, too? >> for everybody. it increases the risk of colon
9:32 am
cancer by 18%. if you do it once in a while, as we've always said on the show, it's not a problem. but if dow it all the time. organic red meat. moderation is the first part of the segment. if you have grass-fed meat is much better than the conventional ones that they take soy and corn. the less number of bacterias, less number of the antibiotics in it. and less hormones. pay attention to that. >> dr. siegel, a lot of people love to barbecue or go to a brazilian restaurant. the meats are burnt. people love burnt meats. your take on this? >> first of all, i think the key here, and i like the direction this is going, where 22 scientists from 10 different countries come together and look over, as david said, 800 studies. what they found this time, looking at colorectal cancer, is they found a scientific link between processed meats, like bacon, like ham -- >> hotdogs.
9:33 am
>> -- hotdogs, smoked, salted, cured, they didn't differentiate from one to the other, but they found the link what we call cause and effect. they're not saying, greg, that this cause and effect, they're saying it's increasing your risk by 18%. cigarettes increases your risk 26 times. this isn't about processed meats being as bad as smoking, it's about finally we think it's a proof. before we've said, look, red meat is associated with pancreatic cancer, with prostate cancer, with colorectal cancer, we've talked about that on the show. but out of 14 studies, the kind we like where we look at people in a group, divide them into two groups, follow them over time, and it looks like they have shown a cause between eating processed meats, which is meats that you cure and salt, and developing colon cancer. >> here's the thing. i love steak. i love bacon. i don't eat it all the time. but i eat steak more than i eat bacon. how much is too much?
9:34 am
what's moderation? i'm sure it depends on your weight, size, and size of your body and all that stuff. or does it? >> it really doesn't. look, if you have once a week, the small portion of red meat, it's perfectly fine. >> right. >> you burn it. the reason why it's okay to have that is it has a lot of omega 6 fatty acids. which is good for you. it has protein, a lot of good things in it. but if you do it all the time, greg said he loves steak, he loves going out. >> yeah. >> if you're going to have bacon for breakfast every day, and add the weekend meats, that will increase your risk for colon cancer. they looked at 300 different samples, all over the u.s., and they looked at the red meat and found out there's a lot of bacterias. there's a lot of antibiotics in it. and it's not good. >> is this going to get these guys who are growing beef, for instance, to really kind of double-check on their processing? >> if the public will pay attention, and they say that i
9:35 am
heard on "sunday house call," barbecued red meat and processed meat is not good for you, they'll be demanding this. once the sales go down, we'll get better quality. that's a big message here. >> great point. it is a big message. have less bacon. have less hotdogs on your barbecue. moderation. i want to talk about the grass-fed issue. this is a really important point. you know why grass-fed beef is better for you? because when you feed gran to cows, arthel, it makes their stomachs moreacidic. 2 million cases of resistant disease from the kind of bacteria that's resistant to antibiotics. you know what? 60 kids just went to a farm in washington state over the past week. it was the kind of farm where they fed grain to cows, instead of grass. the stomach gets more acidic. the kind of e. coli grows in there that gets you very, very sick. these kids got sick.

of 50. according to our cdc, most of those people don't even know they have it. dr. siegel? >> first of all, we're talking about both kinds, cold sores, which affect the mouth, and genital herpes. americans out there don't realize, 50% of women can get one kind of herpes or the other. but you could have oral herpes and spread it via oral sex. that's something people are not really commonly aware of. you have to watch out for blistering, the blistering becomes painful. as you mentioned at the beginning, greg, you may not get any of those things, you may just be carrying it. i can check people for it, when i see it i can treat with medications. those cut down on the duration. people that are shedders should take that, especially when they're sexually active. the key word here is condom use. people should use condoms especially when they have multiple partners. that's really, really important. if you're pregnant, it can lead
9:42 am
to complications with a baby pre-term, and even be transmitted to the unborn child. >> so that is the only way to get this, you're talking about herpes simplex 1 and 2, correct? >> a condom is only good for sexual activities. but you can get it from kissing, you can pass on these herpes virus by kissing somebody or if you have an open sore, you could easily get the virus. i think the key is to educate the children -- the teenagers before they go to college, to know what to look for. a lot of times you may have herpes and it could be asymptomatic and you could pass it on to others. how do you look for it? a lot of people come to the office and say i may be exposed, had sex with somebody else. there are clusters of blisters, in a group, redness under that. that's typically representative of herpes. >> can you see that? >> a lot of times you can. if it's really an outbreak. that's the time these viruses could be active and you could pass it on to other people.
9:43 am
it is painful. now, you have it for life. it's not going to go away. it's hidden. typically, fatigue, or your immune changes, or menstruation or lack of sleep can bring it up, or some diet can do it. >> stress brings this up. people have cold sores and they say, why am i getting it now? i just had a cold or stress or didn't sleep or drank too much alcohol. stress is a key part. >> let me say one more thing. herpes is called a bad disease. but they're using the virus to actually treat melanoma. we're using these viruses, mutating it. >> quickly, dr. siegel, during the wintertime, you see people with cold sores. that's when they seem to have it when it's cold. >> it has nothing to do with cold. >> not at all? >> most of the time that is the herpes virus, not always, though. it could be another virus, too. if it's a blistery red and painful, it's usually herpes.

>> that's type 1, yes. thanks, docs. the biggest killer among women. the signs of a heart attack. what are the warning signals that everyone needs to look out for? the doctors weigh in on that. that's coming up next. >> i know that guy. your body was made for better things than rheumatoid arthritis. before you and your rheumatologist move to a biologic, ask if xeljanz is right for you. xeljanz is a small pill for adults with moderate to severe ra for whom methotrexate did not work well. xeljanz can reduce joint pain and swelling in as little as two weeks, and help stop further joint damage. xeljanz can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections, lymphoma, and other cancers have happened. don't start xeljanz if you have an infection. tears in the stomach or intestines, low blood cell counts, and higher liver tests and cholesterol levels have happened. your doctor should perform blood tests before you start and while taking xeljanz,

and monitor certain liver tests. tell your doctor if you were in a region where fungal infections are common, and if you have had tb, hepatitis b or c, or are prone to infections. xeljanz can reduce the symptoms of ra, even without methotrexate. ask your rheumatologist about xeljanz. iflike i love shrimp, come to red lobster's endless shrimp... ...for as much as you want, any way you want it... sweet, buttery, and creamy. like new pineapple habanero coconut shrimp bites... ...and teriyaki grilled shrimp. and yeah, it's endless, but it won't last forever.

it is the leading cause of death for women in the united states. but according to two brand-new studies, young women may be less aware than men about the warning signs of heart disease, and less likely to receive proper treatment. doctor samadi, i've always read heart attack is the number one killer of women. why don't ewe realize that? >> when you think about heart disease or myocardial infarction, we think about men. women, i'm glad you're wearing the red dress, women are also involved in this. in fact, studies show when women go to the hospital, we're guilty as doctors, we're not thinking about heart attack. some of the signs and symptoms you want to know, chest pain is a clear one. people may think they have peptic ulcer disease, or bad food. but any kind of chest pain
9:49 am
that's unusual, you want women out there, you want to look into it. it's easy. because we get the ekg, we find out if there are changes in the cardiac system. when women go to the hospital, we're not really intervening faster. and they end up dying early. so you're right, leading cause of death among women is heart disease. you need to know about the risk factors, family history. when they go to the doctor, they talk about weight loss and exercise. but they don't talk about the diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, metabolic disease and on and on. this is a great information for women out there. >> i always equate it with men, that's a mistaken assumption on my part. the symptoms, though, can be different. >> especially since we're talking younger women here, women under 60. we as internists and cardiologists like to say, it equalizes out older than 60. but in these two studies, you know what happened, greg? they went to the hospital, they weren't even given the stents that men were given. high cholesterol, high blood pressure, they weren't warned about heart attacks the way that
9:50 am
men are. >> you talk about breast exams and breast health, but not the risk factors. >> doctors out there that are watching, you better start asking women about this. and women, be your own advocates. we've got to focus on this. women are more and more at risk. we have a population living to older years. to your question, though, they also, women, sometimes get different symptoms. they don't always get the crushing chest pain. women are more likely to get nausea and vomiting, or arm tingling, not the crushing elephant sitting on your chest. look for atypical symptoms. short of breath. are you short of breath. are you having nausea. >> chest pain. >> fatigued. >> chest pain that radiates to the left arm is typically signs and symptoms of heart attack. >> got to leave it at that. thanks, guys. halloween, it is over now. and you had all that candy laying around. what are you going to do? eat it, right? how much is an okay amount for you to eat? we're going to tell you next. looks like some folks have had it

with their airline credit card miles. sometimes those seats cost a ridiculous number of miles... or there's a fee to use them. i know. it's so frustrating. they'd be a lot happier with the capital one venture card. and you would, too! why? it's so easy with venture. you earn unlimited double miles on every purchase, every day. just book any flight you want then use your miles to cover the cost. now, that's more like it. what's in your wallet?

so you may take an omega-3 supplementortant... ...but it's the ingredients inside that really matter for heart health. bayer pro ultra omega-3 has two times the concentration of epa and dha as the leading omega-3 supplement. bayer pro ultra omega-3. welcome back. by now, you probably have a whole bunch of halloween candy lying around the house. bunch of kit kates at my house. but how much of that can you actually eat? the recommended daily dose of
9:55 am
sugar is 25 grams. first, here is a look at how much candy that you're allowed to eat. about 2.3 fun size butter fingers, eight star bursts, 15 candy corns and five mini rees peanut butter cut etercups whi like anyway. >> i want to give bad news but you pointed out to me, on this show, we already knocked processed meats, we warned people about herpes virus. if you have a little bit of a sugar baby or -- >> a woman who loves bacon and has genital herpes -- >> have a sugar -- have a nerd, but those are high in sugar. i'm going to say have hershey's nuggets, dark chocolate with almonds. you know why the lower sugar? sugar is addictive. it increases the amount of dopamine in your brain, you need
9:56 am
more of it. it is bad for your teeth and gets converted to fat, you gain weight and you become obese. one day will not kill you. >> i think sugar is toxic. and about three years ago i watched a movie about robert -- from ucsf, that changed my life and i stopped touching any sugar. you get enough of it in your bread. we talk ed about processed meat. you get enough salt and sugar. don't add any of this. mri of the brain shows when you take some of the sugar drinks, you have increase in blood flow and the reward center just like cocaine and heroin becomes addictive. you build tolerance, you want that supersized food. you want more sugar. so stay away from this. and studies shows when you cut down some of that, your liver function test goes down, your sugar goes down, your blood pressure goes down. so the bottom line, the summary of the show, stay away from red meat, make sure the women you sleep with, you know what you're doing, if you go to the hospital and you have chest pain, you're

9:58 am
chocolate. >> again, it is the amount. because we can get excessive about these things. they're all so detective. >> sitting at home. you're sitting at home with a big pile of this after halloween. what do we do today about it? last night, so much -- >> we eat it all at one time. >> you know, you're 100% right, moderation, it comes to medicine, you don't want all or none. you always want moderation. and watch what you put in your mouth. that's what leads to the heart disease and diabetes and everything we spoke about. >> you know, i think dr. siegel just said, i'll not sure who said it, but you said that in this food, or you mentioned that there is that addictive quality, so, you know, we pretend they must be putting something in the fast food, want to keep going back. >> you crave 100% the part of the brain becomes really tolerant. you build up tolerance, say if you want more cocaine and more alcohol and more smoking, same exact thing. scientists show that that reward center becomes tolerant and you
9:59 am
want more sugar. >> when we talk about sugar, we're talking about high fructose corn syrup, anything that is fructose, look for -- in your diet, if it says fructose, that's sugar. >> how do you get off of it if you're addicted to sugar. >> the way we know it is by replacing it with something. exercise is a great way to wean off. exercise will cause the same hormones that sugar does. exercise, drinking more water,t. you have to understand this is an addiction. this is an addiction. >> the best substitute for this, fruits and vegetables. especially fruits because fruits, you would get your sugar -- >> broccoli. >> vegetables. >> you know what i learned today, no candy, no red meat, no sex, i have nothing to live for. >> okay, then you're healthy then. >> you can wean off of the sugar with sex.
