i mean, we've got everybody. we hope to see you then. i'm bill o'reilly. please always remember, the spin stops here. we're definitely looking out. >> breaking tonight, facing a new challenge on the fox business debate stage after days pumelling media attacks. the stakes are high for dr. ben carson tonight. welcome to "the kelly file," everyone, i'm me grkgyn kelly. his mother, ill lit rat. and married at age 13. his father, a baptist minister who turned out to be a bigamist. when carson was 8, his father took off.
6:01 pm
carson's mother worked two to three jobs at a time to support his family. carson says he did poorly at school at first and developed a violent temper as a boy. but sonya had a message for her sont. anything is possible. she demanded that they read two books a week. slowly, carson's grades improved. as a teen, he joined a junior rotc program quickly rising through the ranks. he graduated high school in 1969 with honors. at yale, he oobl taned a degree in psychology and found his future wife with whom he would raise three sons. he went onto med cat school excelling in surgery and by age 32, carson was the director of pediatric neurosurgery. but it was in 1987 that carson's shots to stardom became the first ever to separate twins.
6:02 pm
just one of 15,000 surgeries. today, what draws many is the same thing drawing the media's attention. a compelling personnel narrative. his memoir, gifted hand, draws out many that would lead to a play and a movie about drchlt carson. >> doctor? >> which child would ewe liyou o see first? >> thank you. thank you. >> and then dr. carson decide ds to run for president and low and behold became the front runner. that's when media outlets decided to probe the doctor's memoir and how. in it, they challenged dr. carson's claim that his temper once led him to try to stab a friend named bob. and that he attempted once to hit his own mother with a hammer.
6:03 pm
dr. carson's book offers those examples as evidence of his yoo youthful rage which he says god and his own mother helped him heal. cnn found ten results, 50 years ago and nine out of ten did not remember a violent temper. the suggestion was clearly that carson made it out. >> we went through the yearbooks, we called many of his class mates, found his close friends through every period of his life. and the person that he describes on these anecdotes cannot remember any episodes of violence. >> people interviewed by cnn who knew carson back then are surprised by that description. >> nine friends, class mates and neighbors who grew up in carson's home, cnn, they feel no recollection. >> carson admitted to the kelly file that the friend he
6:04 pm
allegedly tried to stab was, in fact, a kwloes family member saying he changed the names in his memoir. however he maintained his story was true. and, sure enough, this week, a newspaper clipping was found from 1997 in which his mother, sonya, directly supports her son's story, saying oh, that really happened. i salt him down and told him that you don't accomplish much bebeing a bully. you accomplish much more being kind than being harsh. he was offered a full scholarship to the prestigious west point military academy. west point does not offer scholarships. carson admitted to politico that a central point in his personal story was fabricated. his application and acceptance
6:05 pm
into the u.s. military academy at west point. explosive coverage followed. >> we begin with a fire storm and the offer he's been offered a scholarship. >> the story was meant to illustrate from impoverished kid to renowned neurosurgeon. tuition is free in exchange for mill stair service. >> if this politico thing is true, he made something up. >> it is different than misremembering a story from your past. it's different than misremembering when you get into a fight who cow you got into a fight with and what happened at that time if you were in elementary school or junior high. this is lying about applying to west point and getting a full ride there. >> this is lying about applying. he made up being admitted. but politico had its headline wrong.
6:06 pm
dr. carson never admitted fabricating an application to or add madmittance to west point. instead, he stood by his story that a scholarship was offered, but he said he never accepted. he clarified that the offer was only made orally, which he had not disclosed before. and said that no formal exchange had ever occurred. politico was forced to change itsds reporting, but, many in the media ignored the reversal. then the wall street journal hit the doctor with more allegations, suggesting a third anecdote was in doubt. in gifted hands, carson acounts a prank. he says students have o of course called perception 301 where their exams had been lost in a fire. a retake was scheduled for the next day and that the new test was ridiculously hard. many stoounts got up and left on
6:07 pm
protest or claiming that they hadn't seen the retake noes. notice. carson claims he completed the test and he was told that he was truly honest by the professor who then handed him a $10 prize. carson claimed his picture was taken by the school paper. but the media found no record of any picture of dr. carson in the school paper around that time. nor any record of a class by that name. >> these questions undermine some of the central points that he's been making about himself. and i think that lies the danger. >> i'm not sure this is unfair. and ben carson always likes to talk about the fact that barack obama didn't have to go through this vetting. well, he did. >> i hope he wroent be pushed back to ben carson to be complaining about our vetting. that's a key job. >> got h or did they. once again, the attack seemed to fall apart. but, first, carson seemed to
6:08 pm
recount a prank nearly isle dent kalg to the one he described in his mem ware. he said i'm the one who organized this prank. saying the story happened largely as dr. carson described. this is from the article. the editorial assistant at the sa tier yal yale record who says he helped write the fake test says he was 99% certain the way carson remembers it is correct. at the end, what few students remain, it may have been one or two, i wasn't there, received a small cash prize. carson demanded an apology. none so far. has been forthcoming. joining me now, guide benson, co-author of the bookend discussion. good to see you. >> hey, megyn. >> so none of these things tells
6:09 pm
us whether ben carson kpaj rated some facts in his memoirs. he may have done that. but each of the kpaexamples we' just gone through which is with the ones the media really hit him on, has seemed to fall apart in part or in whole. your thoughts? >> first of all, i'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that in this electoral cycle, we have a candidacy for the presidency that yes, in nakt, he did try to stab someone. trust me, i tried to stab someone. that's a presidential candidate. but i think that the exposition that you and your team just perform ds there is so worthwhile and so important. three major news outslets really took a stab, so to speak, at ben carson this week. and they came up empty. they either totally blew the scoop or they o mitted or didn't on earth relevant details that corroborated the broads arc.
6:10 pm
so this narrative seemed to take root in the media that ben carson is a serial fabulous. and then low and behold, bit by bit, it turned out actually no, the major thrust of these stories were true. >> the thing on the scholarship really gave a lot of people pause. like you he was on camera saying i was offered a scholarship to west point. and everyone came out saying they don't offer scholarships. and, yets, they use that terminology on their own web site. there was an ad put out not long ago disz cussing scholarships. it's not beyond the possibility that some official said a promising young african american rotc scholar who got into yale, we'd love to have you at west point and if you come here, it will be a full scholarship. but the media is tryingings to prove a negative. >> if you're a 17-year-old kid in ben carson's position and you acounted his childhood and
6:11 pm
upbringing, if you have someone in the military whispering in your ear hey, if you come to west point and by the way, it would be free, of course your 17-year-old brain would translate that into a scholarship. the politico people, the headline was wrong, the lead was wrong and some details were wrong. what was said to be a lie turned out to be a totally reasonable explanation. >> and the cnn thing about going back and trying to find people about whether they ever saw the violent side. he doesn't suggest i was running around very angry. 50 years ago, do you remember, mean, 50 years ago, guys. >> what does this prove? the point is they're ready to go after ben carson. hoe deserves to have that memoir problemed. fully probed. >> i'm a big believer in the media thoroughly vetting presidential candidates.
6:12 pm
i wish they would do it to both sides equally. especially for someone who carson who's running a heavily biographical cam payable. . the where you know thing i will say that gives me concern, if i'm watching the carson campaign, all the evidence, much of the evidence that you just laid out that was excull chtorial was unearthed: it's almost as if they were caught flat flooted by all of this and effectively out sourced their response to buzz feed. that doesn't give mel a great feeling about their prepared hns. >> this is my last .to tow e you. when the media does some sort of a deep dive into hillary clinton back into the 1990s when her husband wiz president and all the issues that we've gone through with whitewater, what are the odds that we're going to hear from many media out lets, that's old news.

a full-blown investigation. this comes just days after we learned that then-secretary of state hillary clinton did in fact sign two nondisclosure agreements agreeing to protect classified information and agreed mishandling said information is a punishable offense. rick granell served as four ambassadors and as a fox news contributor. so why does it matter that she signed these nondisclosures? >> well, it matters because classified information is super-important. leaking a classified inform frgs is a national security violation. this is a serious violation. by the way, the state department takes it very seriously. i signed these exact forms, before you signed your brief by a security official by an intelligence officer who explains exactly how you're supposed to take care of or create classified, sensitive information.

there is no question that she understood what is happening. and, by the way, the state department goes the extra mile when that person is a political appointee, when they're not a foreign service officer who took an clier class on how to do this. >> it proves knowledge of the proper procedure. you can't get out of this by saying i had no idea. >> right. exactly. she knew how to care take classified nfrgs. and, by the way, she knew exactly how to create classified information. this is an important point. the secretary of state gets information. shed's the first one to talk to a foreign minister. she creates top secret security cleared information all of the time. it may not have that directive on it because she is the first person. she will send it through e-mail or through some sort of secure line. the fact that hillary clinton had no secured, classified e-mail address or compute ere is a huge problem.

it means she didn't ever create the original content of classified information. she wasn't doing her job. >> the other question is politico came out with a story last week suggesting -- now, they're sayingings the worked blown investigation but last week they had a story suggesting there's no there there. e-mails did not contain highly classified secrets. then team clapper and state dismissed that suggestion on the record saying, wrong, wrong. >> right. look, state department will constantly come in after the fact and label information as whether it's top secret or classified or sensitive. the fact of the matter is when you're secretary of state you create content that is top secret. it may not have a classification on it yet but it's absolutely classified information. you should be using a secure phone. >> we heard reports that it was not only classified but top
