i'm shepard smith in new york with this update on attacks in paris. we continue now on fox news channel. trace, the numbers coming in, just the thoughts of how in the world they're going to bring calm here. it's 5:00 on the east coast. 2:00 p.m. on the west coast and midnight now in paris. or actually 11:00 p.m. in paris where we have gotten word if you have just joined us of an incredible series of attacks across paris. for those of you who have been with us for the last couple of minutes, the death toll has riz ton 26. it has all the hallmarks of a massive and coordinated terrorist attack on three different locations. reasons unknown. hostages being held. medics working to get the injured to hospitals and listening now as sky news begins the top of the news hour from their studios in london. >> what appear to be semi-automatic weapons,

bulletproof vests, creating cordons in at least three location ace cross the capital. let's speak to journalist peter allen in paris. peter, what are you learning? >> wello, mark, i'm close to the bataclan concert hall. where lots of people were attending a rock concert tonight. and we're hearing reports that a lot of those people are being held hostage by unknown gunmen inside this very popular concert hall. you may be able to hear sirens behind me, police flooding into the area, people being encouraged to leave and go home. the fear is that some of these gunmen grenade carriers, bomb carriers, whatever they are, still at large. and effectively, the whole city is panicked, and in a state of some chaos. >> tell us about the official reaction, we understand that

francois hollande is in this emergency meeting with his officials. having been evacuated from the stade de france to get back to the center of paris. are they giving an indication yet as to the picture they're building up as to the nature of this, what appears to be a terrorist attack? >> it would be common practice for leaders like francois hollande and indeed the prime minister manuel vail, to meet up, with the french committee, coordinating with police and anti-terrorists officials. and of course we have to start talking about terrorism now, don't we, mark? we spoke half an hour ago, we were hoping against hope that it may be something less serious. but of course we're looking at the death toll of 26, 27 now. lots of people wounded, reports of grenades going off. automatic weapons being used. it's got terrorism written all

over it. and as i say, the french equivalent of the copa committee will be meeting and coordinating their response. the first thing they'll have to do of course is deal with this hostage situation. and of course find the terrorists, we're in the very early stage of this incident. >> peter we're learning that prime minister david cameron has issued a statement i'm shocked by events in paris tonight. our thoughts and prayers are with the french people. we will do whatever we can to help. and indications of course, that certainly the fear is that this has been a coordinated terrorist attack on the french capital. is there any particular reason as to why it should have been timed for now? there had been this lull since the last attack on "charlie hebdo"? >> well not so mellow dramatic, the first thought that came into my head when i first heard about all this, about an hour ago, was that it's friday the 13th

tonight. who knows why terrorist attacks happen at particular times. but all of these kind of symbols are all part of the armory of terrorists. they think up times and places to get maximum exposure. obviously you're always going to get maximum exposure in a beautiful city like paris, which is so popular all over the world. friday the 13th, france, national football team were playing germany in a high-profile friendly tonight. that's always going to attract a lot of attention, we've got the climate summit coming up. albeit in a week, two-week time. but again i think any time they choose to strike. they're going to get maximum publicity that's how terrorists operate. >> yeah, and yet it appears that the greatest number of deaths have been at this restaurant

while the french president was at the football stadium. in the north of the city. and despite these reports of two explosions being heard there, as far as we're aware at the moment at least, no reports of deaths there at the stade de france? >> i think that's relatively common in incidents like this, mark. if you think a small enclosed space like a restaurant or dare i say the "charlie hebdo" offices in january, 11 people died in the building. two died just outside the building. and then of course we have that terrible attack on paris's jewish community a couple of days after the actual magazine attack. and there we have four jewish shoppers murdered in cold blood. >> peter i'm going to interrupt you, more detail coming through from french police. or the police officials saying what's at least 30 dead now. is the latest that we're getting from this television station

bfm. quoting afp. but we do have some figures from police who coming to this figure of 26, said 11 dead at the restaurant and about 15 at the theater. the bataclan theater where we believe some are being held hostage. >> yes, indeed. again going back to what i was saying, enclosed places, are places that have a lot to operate. they can cause maximum damage. at a massive stadium. there were numerous police up there earlier. and it may have been that police have done something to stop casualties up there, who knows. we'll learn that later. but i've been to the theater here, i've been to lots of, obviously we all have, lots of restaurants and bars around paris, you can call it absolute carnage with a gun or grenade. >> so it's a soft target, if you like. >> a soft target, mark, that's

exactly right. >> peter, thank you for that let's bring in rebecca, who is monitoring the social media reports and the latest numbers that we're getting now. at least 30. >> yes, desperate situation. we understand the first incident happened at a bar in the 10th district of paris. now in this we understand a gunman opened fire with an automatic pistol. there we understand a number of people died. the reports are 11 dead there. and people reporting that they've seen dead bodies in the middle of the street. the police are at the scene. you'll see the pictures at the moment. there is a cordon in place there. but a desperate, desperate situation. then we heard that there was another attack, an explosion reported to have targeted a bar near the stade de france, that's a football stadium north of paris. france were hosting a friendly football match against germany. >> with the president in attendance. >> yes, the president was there. he was evacuated, we understand that he is now in emergency

meetings, discussing what is going on. we don't yet know whether there has been any fatalities or injuries in that particular attack. and then the third, this rock concert that was being held, the eagles of death metal were playing at the bataclan theater in paris. witnesses said they heard 20 shots being fired. and two men are claimed to have opened fire there. now we understand as you say, 15 have died there, the police have said that there is some sort of hostage situation taking place. it seems that this is some sort of coordinated attack. we've not yet had it confirmed whether it is terror-related. of course france is on high terror alert following the "charlie hebdo" attacks in january. >> we're just getting a bit more from the figaro. and they are indicating this is in relation to stade de france. a message has gone out on the loudspeakers there, asking all fans to evacuate calmly.

with police guard securing the area around the stadium to help evacuate the spectators. so clearly they had held them in the stadium for the match to continue. now they've got the headache of getting these people away safely with no doubt the news of what's happening elsewhere in the city reverberating around the stadium. >> as you say, the match continued for some time. thousands and thousands of people there, we understand the explosion was heard outside of that stadium. there are reports, unconfirmed i should stress, that that was a suicide bomber involved in that particular attack. presumably in the coming minutes, hours, we will get more information on that. but like i say, there are emergency meetings being held with francois hollande at moment. i've just got more information coming in now -- >> in fact, shepard smith at the fox news desk in new york this is video from inside the stadium. listen. listen closely now right here.

hear that? we believe that is this explosion that they've been talking about. it was just outside the stade de france stadium. this is germany and france playing a friendly. listen one more time. that is the noise of that explosion. it is the belief right now of police that that was a suicide bomber. in addition we have gotten word that many of the people who were, accusations there were grenade attacks that happened at the same time. and that many of those who were once had automatic weapons and grenades are wondering somewhere in paris and authorities are looking for them. live pictures coming from sky news a as they're waiting to evacuate the stadium. asking that people evacuate calmly and quietly as police surround the stadium. the death toll is at least 30 now. in a series of coordinated attacks in three different locations that we know of in paris. listen. >> david cameron has given his response to the attacks by

saying i'm shocked by events in paris tonight. our thoughts and pairs are with the french people. we will do whatever we can to help. clearly there will be these various contingency plans that every european capital have to put in place, that includes these heavily armed, anti-terrorist police and riot police being put in position. let's speak now to a journalist based in paris. the number now being put at 30 by the french media. >> yes, others have been put at 30. the streets are completely in complete chaos, obviously the event started with what we thought was a bar, which is actual lay restaurant this is a restaurant heavily pop lated with lots of night life going on. so a very kamikaze attack that happened. opening fire in a restaurant obviously you will have multiple victims everywhere. and observers are saying there

are bodies lying in the road. so hence why we have cordons everywhere. there is going to be people being evacuated. and also this is community, it's an area of paris which is very family-based, very community. it's a heavy police presence since january. with police and military walking around, securing places of worship, with machine guns and one of the areas of paris where you would know since january, probably the most profound police presence. shortly afterwards, of course there was the stade de france and now we're hearing the bataclan just down the road. >> an indication they've got this problem at stade de france now, that the crowd was kept there for the match to continue. but they've now got to get all of those, tens of thousands of people to safety with all of them having got the news of what's been happening elsewhere across the capital. >> indeed. i imagine they kept everyone there for the safety of it being easier and it was, well the

safest option. but now they're going to have to transfer an enormous amount of people back to the city. many people also living in the suburbs area. and i'm not sure how they will have the capacity to do that at this point. considering that everything is cordoned off and i imagine no public transport. >> we're getting more from the police official being quoted by an a.p. news agency, who says there have been around 100 hostages taken at the paris theater. the bataclan. 35 dead. but we don't know whether that's indicating that 35 are dead at that location or whether that's the total figure. we had the figure of 30 earlier. 11 perhaps suggested killed at the restaurant. >> yes, indeed we had a figure earlier. >> i want to take you inside the bataclan theater this is the concert hall. and you can see how crowded this concert hall was. again, the updated information, from sky news and from authorities is as many as 100 people now being held hostage at this moment inside the bataclan

concert hall. and playing inside the bataclan at the time, the eagles of death, a metal rock band from the united states. from palm desert in california. and we don't know the status of that band. we don't know the status of things inside here. but we know the death toll according to paris authorities has just risen to 35. and the number of people injured, we can't even get a handle on as there are more injured than there are ambulances, we're told. and the number of hostages inside the bataclan said to be as many as 100. seth porgess is an american journalist on vacation in paris, on scene moments after one of the attacks there, what can you tell us? >> i was, i'm sitting in an apartment directly adjacent to the attack at the restaurant. the neighborhood called l la republique. at first it wasn't apparent what was going down the. it looked like any normal police

activity, maybe a bar fight or a traffic stop, something along those lines. then it became apparent that something bigger had happened. i stepped outside, ten seconds after gunshots had gone off. speaking to people, heard five or six gunshots, suggesting it was a clikalishnakov rifle. at fifrs there were rumors there were people shot in a car. it now appears it was a restaurant. it's a corner next to a canal, there's a mcdonald's and another restaurant. people, we're not sure if it was at the mcdonald's or the other restaurant where it was occurring. an individual with a bloody hand and a white towel wrapped around it, huddling, hiding in the entrance to the apartment i'm staying in. i don't know if it was related or not. it looked like at first glance he had cut his hand. although now it appear it is might have been a gunshot. >> seth porgess live if paris, an american journalist live on

scene there moments after the attack. how would you describe the neighborhood where what just happened is? >> it's a bustling nightlife area. there are numerous bars, restaurants, a lot of activity. i got away from the neighborhood once it came clear, but i'm there right now on my cell phone. i'm going to attempt to get back into the apartment and hide away. it's the streets now appear to be blocked with police advance and i'm looking at one right now with a flashing light. they have loud speakers, you can probably hear them. you can probably hear the loud speakers right now speaking at the crowd. the crowd is looking at them. i heard last i heard there was a gunman on the loose, i don't know if that's changed. >> authorities have told thaus they believe there are multiple gunmen and they don't know their location at the moment. i wonder if you can describe what the scene is like out and about. have most people gone into buildings? and are sheltering or what? >> yes, it was at first, nobody seemed to be aware of what was going on. i was at the scene, people ten steps away were laughing and

talking into their phones, weren't aware. you could sort of see the wave going through the city as fewer and fewer people were on the street almost by the minute. those that were there were not laughing any more. >> it's my understanding that this is one of those neighborhoods, multiple in paris, where it wasn't unusual to see in the wake of "charlie hebdo" and otherwise, people patrolling, different sorts of events that security had become the norm since the january attacks? >> i don't live in paris, so i can't speak for sure about that. >> i wonder if there was any sign -- was it a sort of care-free environment prior to all of this tonight? >> yes, yes. it wasn't on lockdown, it wasn't like that the security in the city as there is in any big city these days, but it wasn't like in lockdown. people were out and about and having a good time. it's a friday night and then this happens. >> after the initial first of course people are laughing and not realizing what has happened. once they did, was it quiet? was it panicked? or was it something in between? how would you describe it? >> well you know, the big city

and you could sort of see, you could tell by people's faces whether they had heard, almost. and at first i saw this activity and i looked on twitter and started googling the name of the neighborhood there were two mentions of any activity of police or french and then within ten minutes there were hundreds. word got out pretty quickly. it wasn't like the whole city came to a hush immediately. you could see it spread through the town. >> seth porges, what's your plan now? >> i'm going to try to get back into my apartment and hide up. it's on the other side of the police barricade so we'll see what happens. >> thank you for calling. it's one of those situations where now no one really knows what to expect. we know that this many areas of the city are on lockdown. that authorities are concerned there are others out there who would do harm. that 100 people are now being held hostage in a concert hall. and we very much have an unknown situation at this moment in the city of paris. there are stations across the line, up and down along our fox

stations across the nation that are about to join us for a brief report from them. stay with us. and good evening from fox news in new york. i'm shepard smith and unprecedented series of attacks have happened in paris tonight. and right now, it is unknown whether there are more gunmen and bombers out among the city streets. a live look in paris now, we can tell you there were simultaneous attacks that happened sometime in the last hour or so. at a restaurant, at a bar, outside a stadium and in addition, at a concert hall. the death toll at this moment is said to be 35. scores injured. the scene described as following to us, multiple people inside a restaurant standing while masked, beginning to fire. multiple people killed there, as many as 11. in the stampede to exit the place, more killed and injured. nearby at another similar place, more nightclub, an attack that happened there as well. said to be a suicide bomber. by other accounts, said to be

men with grenades. at any rate, a number killed there as well. and at a concert hall nearby, an american group performing, the eagles of death metal inside a very popular concert hall, with what appears to be many, hundreds of people inside, this band, the eagles of death metal from palm desert california, touring and playing at a concert hall tonight. many people killed there as well. a number of people shot. and right now a hostage situation is unfolding with as many as 100 people held hostage inside a concert hall. and authorities working to restore calm. at the same time, as all of this was happening, the french president, francois hollande was at a stadium just around the corner from the restaurant and bar where the shooting attacks and the bombing happened, inside a friendly match between the germans and the french. tens of thousands of people inside.

an explosion heard there. but unknown of what it was at the time. we have some pictures that came from inside that stadium. the friendly match eventually ended as the attacks were going on outside. live pictures coming from sky news inside the stadium. if we can look at those, you can see a number of people are still on the ground, the live feed from sky news on the stadium floor where the soccer match had taken place. authorities have asked people to evacuate quietly and calmly, you can see them all on their cell phones trying to figure out what happened. so many learned about this from twitter. and two of these attacks happened outside the stadium. the french president has said to have gone to help manage the information regarding all of this. we've just gotten from a police official here in the last 15 seconds, a police official in paris now confirms to the "associated press," around 100 hostages are being held now. at the paris theater. and 35 people are now confirmed dead. we don't know exactly what the

situation is with these hostages. authorities are a number of people killed at the theater as well. in addition, at least 35 people now confirmed dead. the u.s. homeland security department, we've just gotten word, officials say they are monitoring the attacks and no known credible threat against the united states at this moment. the "associated press" reports one thing, and "reuters" news agency reports another. i've gotten from police 100 people held hostage at bataclan concert hall in the hostage situation under way now. the bbc editor has tweeted that and police have sent out that message as well. what is this? we cannot know with certainty. we know that all of this happened within moments of each other.

it appears that a coordinated, a coordinated terrorist attack has taken place. with a shooting and multiple shootings with semiautomatic weapons happening inside a restaurant/bar, with an explosion that may have been a suicide bomber. with people with grenades. we cannot know for certain yet. and separately at the bataclan concert hall shootings and then hostage taking. the british prime minister david cameron has just said we will do whatever we can to help. the "reuters" news agency reports u.s. security believed the series of attacks that took place on paris in the last hour were likely coordinated based on initial reports. according to a person familiar with the intelligence assessment, quoting now, this looks like a coordinated series of attacks. "associated press" citing police officials as well on the hostages. i would like to go to catherine herridge, our, who works

intelligence for us out of washington. catherine, what is homeland security and beyond telling you at this hour? >> what we have this evening is homeland security, the u.s. intelligence community as well as what's called the national counterterrorism center or nctc, the hub for threat analysis. the gathering of information here in washington. are monitoring events in paris. based on my experience, they're really three threads that are of central interest to investigators. as you mentioned, the simultaneous nature of the events, unfolding within an hour or less of each other. the bar, also the stadium and then also the concert hall. i would also note that the concert hall had a high-profile gig going on there with an american band and the french president was at the football stadium. secondly, the location. this was a time of day and a part of paris, which would be an attractive target for any

organization who wanted to launch an attack. it's a high-density urban environment, it's a place with a vibrant night life and it was a place that not only drew parisiennes, but also tourists as well. number three, look at the multiplicity of weapons that were reportedly involved here based on the initial information we're getting from the ground. the kalishnakov, that's a weapon that's typically used by individuals who travel outside of france to get training in a place like afghanistan or yemen or syria. number two, grenades. the reports of a suicide bomber as well. finally, when you look at the numbers that we now have confirmed from the french authorities, 35 dead, and 100 hostages, this takes a significant number of people working together, to have murdered so many innocents in such a short period of time and to also hold them hostage at this hour. this is not a pick-up game. what is going on in paris at

this hour. this speaks to premeditation. it speaks to coordination, shepard. those are the three big threads that they're looking at. >> katherine, this happens in a context of france and paris specifically being in the middle of the highest terror alert. >> on the issue of french nationals traveling overseas to get foreign training. cazenueve. said he had identified 400 individuals from their country who had gone overseas and obtained training from foreign terrorist groups.

he was discussing the difficulty of providing the kind of surveillance and tracking that was necessary. we don't know who is responsible, but certainly the amount of operatives it would take to do this. the coordination, the style of the weapons, the target placement here. as well as the simultaneous nature go to the idea of a terrorist attack. >> at the top of the screen, the stade de france, that's the stadium where it happened. that's bar outside where one of the attacks happened. >> these are two separate areas that appear to be at minimum, catherine, you've got a number of gunmen at one location, a number of hostage-takers at another, you have a suicide bomber. the number of people involved is not small. and to think that all of this happened, while at the same time authorities in paris are at the highest alert possible, it makes one wonder what is possible test pist best efforts.

>> one of the things that's going to be important to pay attention to as the evening develops is the locations and the number of minutes between these attacks. the standard play book is to launch one attack. and almost in effect, stake them out or block them out by launching an attack in a separate area. it appears that's what happened. they had a maximum drain on the french security forces all in the same time period which at this stage goes to the point that they were able to kill so many people at once and take these hostages. >> we're setting up for a live report and we'll go to that reporter as it happens. from the timeline that we can get right now and everything will change however slightly. from the timeline that we get right now, there was a shooting and an explosion that happened pretty much simultaneously and then shortly thereafter, don't

know how long, that's when the attack at the concert hall happened. that's when 100 hostages got taken. to your point it's easier to take hostages when the maximum drain has happened on authorities. >> you make an excellent point, shepard, which you have three distinct, discrete events, each one you can think of as an independent cell or operation, right? part of moving the checkers on the board, if you will. for whatever the plot was or whatever the thinking was. what we know at this point is that there are three distinct threads here. the simultaneous nature. the location involving high-profile targets. and third, the amount of weaponry that was involved. and finally, all of this speaking to significant premeditation and a significant number of operatives. this was not again, this was not pick-up game that was going on in paris this evening and that's

still playing out. this took considerable manpower and considerable planning. >> people who have escaped the concert hall and many did, have now given the following description of what happened inside. as the concert was under way, a loud concert, eagles of death metal, a u.s. group from palm desert, california performing. a packed house inside. among those doing the shooting was a man with a pump-action shotgun. who would just shoot one after another after another. and as people filed out, bodies dropped and the rest, eventually the hostage, they were able to take what we now believe to be 100 hostages. and because it is such a small world our own heralda rivera's daughter was inside that concert hall and he has just joined me on set. i know that she is safe and i cannot even imagine. >> she was at the soccer game with her best friend. are studying their junior year

abroad in paris, i was going on thanksgiving week to see them. they were at the soccer game. my daughter simone told me, she heard the three explosions near halftime. they knew president hollande was there. and then as they started to leave, and as you can imagine, the people in the stadium were, were becoming upset and all of them wanted to leave. the s.w.a.t. team and the emergency services people started coming in with their, with their long rifles and medical aid. i don't know what the explosions, she didn't see anyone who had been killed or injured. but she saw the emergency medical teams arriving. they left the stadium, people ran one way, my daughter simone and her friend, they were four of them in the party, started going in the other. they saw the crowd, another crowd pouring from another exit. it was, it was chaos. they immediately, the french authorities as you know, shep, now they've had this sorry experience with "charlie hebdo"

last january and the training, et cetera. they sealed it, there's a perimeter, the girls managed to get outside the perimeter. i told them not to take the subway. when i just spoke to her, two, three minutes ago, she said she was looking for a taxi of the. they're about four miles from home. we're monitoring it. her phone is not working, it's a mess. but the, this is a terrifying military scale attack it seems to me. and i just thank god shy wasn't at the rock concert, but was at the soccer stadium where the president's presence, there was considerable security. i don't know what the three bombs have done in terms of the damage they have wreaked. but i do know that this, this is a, obviously to me a coordinated terror atrack. i don't want to get beyond the facts, i heard from my own daughter, this is violent, that means there are, there are

obviously many, many people killed and injured already. you can imagine what it was like for us, as parents, waiting for her to communicate with us. thank god her friends called her mom, her mom called you know, the girl's mom. who called me. you know her sister isabella works here, we're very concerned. we won't rest until she is in her apartment. we don't want her to travel, we don't want her to do anything, lock her down until they sort this out. this is a major, major attack on a u.s. ally. and god knows what's next. i mean it's -- it's terrible. here's this is my -- this is my gorgeous daughter. it's -- it's very upsetting, i hate, i'm used to being in the action myself. i can't, i can't -- it's a lot easier to report these things

than to experience myself than if it is your child. she just turned 21 years old, she's a straight-a student, a wonderful, wonderful person and very gentle soul. and we're obviously very concerned. >> i'm thinking how many millions literally of parents and brothers and sisters are dealing with this. think of this, that stadium seats close to 80,000 people. and it was mostly full, we're told. the concert hall, sits somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000. there are now at least 100 hostages being held. geraldo mentioned the explosions. one we're being led to believe by the authorities it was a suicide bomber that went off inside a restaurant or bar, nightclub. and two others, said to be potentially grenades, aid cording to authorities, frankly they don't seem to know specifically exactly what has happened from location to location. and as they were all being drawn away toward this, another attack happened at almost the same time, the latest numbers we have, 35 killed, scores injured. and as many as 100 being held

hostage inside this building. you wonder, geraldo, to another level, i don't know when nato involvement becomes part of this and i don't even know who you declare war on. at this moment no one has claimed responsibility and authorities have not yet said this is terror. but it's certainly coordinate and it's certainly terrifying. >> it is that. we don't want to get ahead of the news of course, shep, you cannot deny the fact that these were coordinated, massive attacks. designed to inflict maximum casualties. the french, who have a lot of experience dating from the algeria days, dealing with muslim extremism will respond with vigorous force. >> then the vicious cycle will start. the force and surveillance they put on the muslim neighborhoods will create more resentment. it will be the cycle that goes on. this is the reality that we have bequeathed to our children.

surprising. europe one radio is reporting. this is new to us on fox news channel, there has just been according to europe one radio, another attack. this is said to have happened at a shopping mall, europe one radio is reporting that first there was an attack in a restaurant or bar, then a second attack almost simultaneously. then the shooting and taking of hostages at the concert hall. and now, according to europe one radio, there has been a shooting at a mall. and i don't yet know the location. for a little bit of context. we, we can't be sure that this last one has happened. i say it for the following reason. during the attacks of 9/11, when traveling quickly to work down fifth avenue and passing st. peter's cathedral on the left and go to work, st. patrick's cathedral, word came on the radio inaccurately there had

this is france's 9/11. this is that big. this is something that -- >> the president this from the white house moments ago. the president says he has been briefed or the white house says the president has been briefed on the attacks in paris. that killed at least 35. according to his assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism. this from a white house official. we've just gotten details from europe one radio, which reports this shooting has happened, at la chauve shopping mall. there has been report of europe one radio, of a shooting at a shopping mall. and a very famous one at that we'll wait for authorities to give us information, specifically, butky tell you, we're waiting for more from the concert hall. because that is a place where so many different things could happen. we know that 100 people are held hostage.

pictures inside the concert hall now. from instagram. ? it appears to me as everything was going down. can you imagine a concert under way. very loud and huge crowds, the mosh pit in the front and all the rest. suddenly noises and gunshots and people began to fall and this crush to get out of the building at some point they stopped many people from getting out. and are now holding them hostage. with the french president, just spoken. the french president has called in emergency cabinet meeting. to happen at midnight tonight. so 19 minutes from now in paris, an emergency cabinet meeting from the french president. also, the white house has just said the president is to deliver a statement at 5:45 eastern time so we're three and a half minutes away now from the president, which means we'll set up a level two so that our stations up and down the line can join us. we got first word of this frankly while sitting on the couch and watching the afternoon

news on the friday and thinking the end of the day cannot come too soon. it has been a very long week for people who work at fox news and fox business. a difficult week, no doubt with lots of overtime in a lot of people saying i can't wait to get home to my wife or my husband and have a weekend of calm. and then you consider what suddenly happened. on the most normal of all possible nights. in mid november in paris, the 10:00 hour, the streets are bustling with people, mostly young, young and old, suddenly explosions heard inside a massive stadium where the president of your nation has been in attendance at a soccer match, not one, but according to geraldo's daughter, three explosions heard outside. and suddenly a shooting begins outside a cafe. multiple masked gunmen standing and beginning to fire amid the dinner, the late dinner in paris. shortly after, word of an explosion nearby, and word from authorities that explosion was

that of a suicide bomb er who hd exploded himself inside this building and then believed there were men with hand grenades and long arm who is were unaccounted for and missing as authorities all rush to try to contain this one scene and then the concert hall where as witnesses report someone with a long gun, a pump-action shotgun began to fire inside that building, people began to fall, at least 11 confirmed dead there, a crush of people pouring out into the streets and the gunman, whoever they are, whatever their number, and whatever their motivation, one said by witnesses to have screamed "this is for syria." began blocking the exits and holding as many as 100 people hostage. >> the attacks in paris have left at least 60 people dead.

the truth of this is, we will not know exactly what has happened on this night we cannot know exactly what has happened. for many hours if not days to come. because the scene there is one of unthinkable chaos. they're working to find out how to dpree these hostage who is are right now inside a concert hall. who should have been on their way home by now. instead are waiting to see if they will live through the night. whoever the terror-inflictors are, waiting for the inevitable video of what has happened tonight. wondering what will happen with those still held hostage. this report from europe one radio. that there is another scene. >> we'll wait for authorities from that.

because obviously we've lived through terror attacks before and others have died through terror attacks before. where in the early minutes and hours after the initial, there are reports of all kinds of things happening. in all kinds of places, thankfully many of which prove not to be true. police have confirmed 35 people in multiple television stations, reporting as many as 60 dead tonight. unknown hundreds injured and some 100 still held hostage tonight at this moment inside a concert hall. >> at the top of the hour, french president francois hollande will speak. the french president is holding a cabinet meeting at midnight. to decide how the french nation is to proceed with parts of one of the most famous cities in all the planet on lockdown and in chaos. with at least one american's

young daughter, after leaving the stadium, unable to get a cab and calling through her friend's parents to let her own know that she was alive and well and looking for shelter on a november night in s unbelievabl all seeing and yet, it has happened. unknown numbers of gunmen, of unknown origin with no previous warning happening in a city where the terror alert was as high as it can be. and now -- the president of the united states. >> good evening, everybody. i just want to make a few brief comments about the attacks across paris tonight. once again we've seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians. this is an attack not just on paris, it's an attack not just on the people of france, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. we stand prepared and ready to

provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of france need to respond. france's is our oldest ally. the french people have stood shoulder to shoulder with the united states time and again. we want to be very clear that we stand together with them in the fight against terrorism and extremism. paris itself represents the timeless values of human progress. those who think that they can terrorize the people of france, or the values that they stand for are wrong. american people draw strength from the french people's commitment to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. we are reminded in this time of tragedy. that the bonds of liberte, egalite and fraternity, are not

only values that the french people care so deeply about, but they are values that we share and those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism. or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening. we're going to do whatever it takes to work with the french people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice and to go after terrorist networks that go after our people. we don't yet know all the details of what has happened. we have been in contact with french officials to communicate our deepest condolences to the families of those who have been killed. to offer our prayers and thoughts to those who have been wounded. we have offered our full support to them. the situation is still unfolding, i've chosen not to

call president hollande at this time. my expectation is that he is very busy at the moment. i actually by coincidence was talking to him earlier today in preparation for the g20 meeting. i am confident that i'll be in direct communications with him in the next few days and will be coordinating in any way that they think is helpful in the investigation of what has happened. this is a heart-breaking situation and obviously those of us here in the united states. know what it's like, we've gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves. and whenever these kinds of attacks happened, we've always been able to count on the french people to stand with us. they have been an extraordinary counterterrorism partner. and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion. i'm sure that in the days ahead, we'll learn more about exactly what happened.

and my teams will make sure that we are in communication with the press to provide you accurate information, i don't want to speculate at this point in terms of who is responsible for this. it appear there is may still be live activity and dangers that are taking place as we speak. and so until we know from french officials that the situation is under control and we have more information about it, i don't want to speculate. okay? >> thank you very much. >> well the president speaking live at the white house, he just said there may be live action and dangers as we speak. i can tell you the things to which he refers. there are multiple reports at this hour of multiple new shooting locations. we now have confirmed three different locations. our own network, sky news in the united kingdom is reporting of another, the bbc, along with europe one radio are reporting

of another. the authorities are not coming together to offer information at this moment. suffice it to say, we're going to stick with what we know for sure and pray that what we're hearing is not true. because if so, this is ongoing, and there is a very long night ahead. i can tell you what we're sure of. and that is that the bbc's europe editor is now reporting that some of those held hostage inside the bataclan concert hall are emerging from that hall. some with blood on them. and in many cases telling stories of what happened inside. now how were they released? we cannot know. we can only know that the bbc's editor says that they are out and some were covered in blood. were they released? did they escape? i don't know. i can tell you that we have multiple reports on this. that the shooters inside the

bataclan were not masked, but were unmasked and were young and were shooting calmly. now this is -- this is a completely different scene than we've been led to believe happened inside the restaurant and bar. there we were told, remember the initial reporting was, masked men began firing with long guns. masked men. now from bataclan, we have multiple reports, including from this bbc editor, these were young men, not masked at all. one of whom yelled "this is for syria." a according to reports on scene and began firing calmly. further, a report that the person, one of the persons who was doing the firing, reloaded multiple times and presuming during that time, some were able to escape. witnesses at bataclan where the hostages were taken, tell french television 24, that the attackers also shouted

allahuakhbar. which means god is great. and france 24 cable news channel, is reporting there was a dismembered body found near the stadium, stade de france, suggesting that it could have been a suicide bomber. though they will not confirm that. authorities originally told us that a suicide bomber was in the mix in all of these three locations. and that a suicide bomber exploded himself in one of these locations. and that separately there was someone else with either long guns or hand grenades. at any rate, they believe now they may have found the person who was a suicide bomber, dismembered on scene. again from the bbc's europe editor, of the young gunmen acting calmly and reports from the mayor of france, that this was the mayor of france, says this has been an attack on parisians, the attack total

death stands at 35. many more injured and approximately 100 held hostage. we know the number is changing. we have reports on scene, some of the hostages leaving the building in some way or another. in some cases covered in blood. i believe that let's listen live now through the facilities of sky news. brief statement. but he has declared a state of emergency for all of france. and the president of france has closed the borders. no one will be allowed to exit france as they search for the terrorists who have attacked, according to the french president in multiple locations on this friday night in the city of lights. he says that the french military is being deployed around paris. an unprecedented move in the face of unprecedented attacks. i will read from the french president, an emergency cabinet meeting tonight is scheduled to begin in two minutes. the paris municipality asks parisians in a tweet to stay at home. at least 35 people are now confirmed dead. the military is being dispatched to the streets of paris, especially in the 10th and 11th districts, a state of emergency has been declared. the borders have been closed. paris on terror alert as we

speak and the french president indicating that the terror attack is ongoing. we would anticipate under normal circumstances by now we would have further information and clarification on these reports that we were getting from very credible news sources. very credible news sources, indicate now and are reporting that there are attacks ongoing now in other locations. we cannot confirm this. we have no video to support it. we have no eye witnesses who have seen it. as a result we're not going to give you details of those things. what we have already is confirmation enough of a night that will forever be remembered, a night on which at least three separate attacks have happened. 35 people have been murdered. the borders of france have been closed. the military dispatched to streets and a state of emergency declared across the nation. the president of the united states has spoken, the president of france has spoken. a cabinet meeting is to begin

now. as the world watches and waits and hostages remain inside a concert hall in paris and authorities surround it at this hour. >> it is 6:00 p.m. on the east coast, 3:00 p.m. on the west coast and midnight in paris on the night of a terror strike against one of the world's great cities. it began in the early part of the 10:00 p.m. hour in paris when first reports came, first reports came that there had been an explosion of some sort that was inside a bar or restaurant. within minutes word that simultaneously there had been a series of shootings inside another bar/restaurant. word that multiple gunmen had stood with masks on their heads, and begun firing inside that location. that more than a dozen people have been shot and killed, and others
