tv Red Eye FOX News November 18, 2015 12:00am-1:01am PST
12:00 am
we will continue to follow these developments and bring you more details as we begin our next hour here on fox news channel, america's most watched news. this is a fox news alert. i'm kelly wright in new york. good morning. the war against terrorism triggers another night of chaos, violence and bloodshed. it came late tuesday after the reports two air france planes were diverted because of uh money nuss bomb threats. one this route from los angeles to paris and had to be rerouted to salt lake city. the second flight in route from washington to paris was diverted to halifax, canada. in both cases air france confirms the planes landed safely and the passengers were deplaned without incident. the threats were hoaxes and the fbi is investigating those scwaitions. situations. that situation had barely come
12:01 am
to a close when word came from paris of a massive police raid in the northern suburb of saint-denis. we are listening to the gunfire that unfolded -- that ensued. let's listen. [gunfire]. >> all of that is happening overnight. it is there in paris and in that neighborhood of saint-denis. you recall the terrorist attacks left 129 people dead on friday the 13th across from the french capitol. the key target of the raid was described as the mastermind of the attacks. until now it had been thought he was hiding in syria. the scwat swat officers -- the s.w.a.t officers moved in and heavy gunfire erupted. at least four officers were wounded in this and two
12:02 am
suspected it terrorists were killed. one was a woman who blew herself up with a suicide belt, an innocent pass esh -- passerby also killed in the raid. on the phone now with us is our fox news middle east and terrorism expert. what does this mean for the war on terrorism? >> it means a lot. if you look at the picture in addition to what we have explored before, look at the shear number of military units and paramedics and security forces involved to go after two or three individuals -- individual jihadists. that's a big lesson. we saw something comparable in boston a few years ago. the whole city was shutdown. there was a large contin -- contingent of security forces. this is how we do it in the west, making sure the operation will be ended without casualties to
12:03 am
civilians. what we have to keep in mind that isis is moving to place a number of cells, a number of militants. they want to widen their capacity. so the west in general of the united states in particular and now france is facing this. needs to design scenarios whenner by, you know -- whereby this what we see could become multiple in many places at the same time. this is one of the less sons we have to understand. the second one is to have the public alert and inform that we discussed. it is crucial to have the public understanding that we are at war actually with isis. i am thinking of these poor young men and women in france who were killed. i mean when those two armed jihadys went into the big concert place there were a thousand people on the inside. those two jihadists were killing them one after another.
12:04 am
an educated, alert public needs to produce something else. we need to start thinking otherwise. it is impossible that two persons will be able to kill up to a hundred people from a thousand people without -- while waiting for security forces to come. some discipline and some culture and some education has to be given and provided to the public. because we are facing a situation where we know, we really know it will happen again. >> we appreciate your insight. i know you can -- if you can stay with us for the rest -- the duration of this evening. we still don't know how this will turn out. we are watching it and we are also watching it at eye to eye level right there on the scene is our own senior correspondent who has been following the developments throughout the evening. steve, what updates can you provide sph we are watching and all in america wanting to know what takes place now?
12:05 am
>> kelly, we are really in the middle of an active siege operation. it is five hours in. it looks like at least one suspect is still holed up in the third floor of an apartment building. now, police and security forces are simply in massive force around this area. the streets have been closed and the schools have been closed and buildings evacuated. there is a large presence of elite police forces as well as at least a hundred soldiers as well. a massive display of man power. it all began at about 4:00 a.m. local time. that's when there was a barrage of gunfire incoming and out going from both sides. both sides heavily armed. at least seven grenades going off as well. a major battle now between the two sides just north of paris in the suburb of saint-denis. there has been some conflicting information from authorities, but certainly the
12:06 am
target is clear. this nation has mobilized more than 100,000 police and military to try and find two of the missing suspects from those friday killings, and also the chief plotter, the planner behind this as well. it is clear from police that that is the target of the raid , the two suspects and the plotter. whether or not they were inside that building or perhaps still remain inside is not clear. we have seen a standoff now after about 20 minutes of sustained gunfire and explosions . and it has been largely quiet. so the the police now and the military are holding their positions around this house. they have evacuated. they have cleared things out. but still so far no resolution to this situation right now, kelly. >> police are basically -- it is like as you said an active siege. when you have this situation the the wait can be for hours. police are trying to always
12:07 am
get their suspect, but also to make sure that no one has harmed -- no one innocent is harmed in the process. and as we have been reporting there was an innocent bystander at the beginning of all of this who was apparently shot and killed. therefore many people were told to stay indoors and the public offices have been what's the mood of the people there? >> certainly there are a couple of schools actually nearby that have been closed and shutdown. this city and really the entire nation has been on edge since the attacks on friday. the brutal attacks that mainly killed people under 30 years of age so no sense of getting back to normal at all, and especially the fact that two suspects were seen to be still at large as people worried. now more gunfire and more violence from both sides on the outskirts of paris has
12:08 am
people deeply alarmed. they knew it wasn't over and now they can hear and see it for themselves that the fight still continues, kelly. >> steve, we are getting some word right now uh parentedly from -- apparently from french prosecutors, but according to french prosecutors the word we are receiving is three arrests in paris suburb standoff have been made. the identities remain unclear at this time. have you heard anything to confirm or deny that information? >> french media is reporting that there have been three arrests citing unnamed police sources. but again they are not giving the identity. i think it has been clear and from french officials it is clear who the targets are. they are trying to find the two suspects from the killings on friday and the chief planner as well. but whether those are the people inside that building is not clear at this point, kelly.
12:09 am
>> wow, that is -- i guess that is good news for the police to get three arrests, but steve there seems to be a lot more work to be done. when you look at the fact that this neighborhood has been a trouble spot for paris for so many years dating back to 2005 , can you take us back to what happened then? in all likelihood, some of the situations or the terrorist bombings that took place -- the terrorist attacks that took place on friday the 13th may have been related in someway to perhaps parisian authorities or french authorities not taking the threat away back then. >> you are right to point out that the french have had trouble integrating a lot of immigrants. they are often on the outskirts of the major cities like paris.
12:10 am
you often have problems like enormously high unemployment and no real sense of integration. that situation did explode into violence and riots in 2005. you can remember all of the police cars being burned. a few hundred million dollars worth of damage. certainly nothing like we saw this week in paris. nothing like cold blooded murder to inspire terror. i think it is certainly a tough neighborhood and a neighborhood now where gunfire and explosions have gone off. and really it is a wait and see at this point. the fact that people have already been killed in this siege may factor into the equation the fact that we have seen a suicide bomber and if indeed these are the missing suspects we know what they are about and what they are capable of. so in an enormous display of force and really at this point a display of patience as well, the area has been blocked off for quite a bit of time now. the area has been evacuated,
12:11 am
and it is really a question mark at this point what the military and the elite police forces are waiting for at this time before they decide to go in, kelly. >> steve, one question before i let you go to get more information for us. as you know the people of paris have been through one of the worst nightmares it has ever had since world war ii. and then in the aftermath of that, there was yet another threat issued against them from isis via video saying we will continue to come after you. that's in retaliation for the strikes you conducted against us with the uk as well as united states do you find the people in france are still having to deal with that and does that add more fear to them? are they able to look at this situation and say we will stand and we will move forward?
12:12 am
>> i think there is a real mix of emotions here. i think one overwhelming sentiment i am hearing from people when i ask about what happened is one of confusion. it is just the basic lack of understanding. one man said to me, are these human beings we are dealing with? the brutality and the randomness of the carnage is such that i think it is hard for people to understand. and you combine that with a sense that it is not over. there are still suspects from the killings out on the loose and the sense that we -- they are targeting soft targets with commonly-made weapons makes people confused about who their enemy is and very much afraid that it could in fact happen again. >> that's steve harrigan. steve, we appreciate you as always with your excellent reporting from there. stay safe and keep us updated. we will be getting back to him
12:13 am
i'm sure as the morning continues. we are also getting word that five arrests in the standoff north of paris targeting the mastermind. we don't know as steve indicated we don't know if that's who is inside a building there. we do know that police are on the scene. it is an active siege as steve talked about. our sister network, sky news, is also reporting on this. we want to go to them right now and hear what they're reporting as well. >> rapid gunfire, bursts of gunfire and pause and bursts again. this is happening in the atmosphere that has existed since last friday. people are still very nervous and very jumpy. people wondering what was going on. the police were shouting out to them stay in your houses, keep the doors shut and the windows closed. that operation lasted a few hours and just over an hour ago you and i were talking on
12:14 am
air we heard the two loud bangs. it sounded like grenades and it lead me to believe that it was maybe ushering in the end of the operation. they were flash grenades and the operation may end pretty soon. it does seem in terming's of the majority of the operation that is indeed the case. there are a number of arrests and there are people still in the building. the big question is who is inside the building? we don't know if he has been taken out, if he is one of the people who died, whether he is still inside the building. itit is on going and naturally because they are dealing with such dangerous -- men and women heavily armed. it will be a massive and
12:15 am
difficult operation. the police are going after these dangerous individuals and doing so in a residential area where your priority as much as anything else and probably more than anything else is to protect the public. this really threw off so many challenges. i think that's why we saw so many people on the ground. not just the police and the counterterrorism officers, but truckloads of soldiers coming in to secure the area and building a perimeter and standing there with their guns. it has been a real significant security presence on the ground. there have been french sources confirming this operation began at 3:20 a.m. local time. the french prime minister and the french president totally informed and totally involved on what was going on. those are the latest developments on that. earlier though, a man claiming to be the owner of the
12:16 am
apartment where the terrorists are held up up -- you would be interested in this, michelle. he spoke to local media and he was arrested shortly afterwards -- after he gave this interview. >> i found out that it is happening at my place. these individuals are staying at my flat. i didn't realize they were terrorists. i was asked to help. i just wanted to help. i was asked to let two people stay at my flat for three days and i just helped out. i didn't know where they came from. i didn't know they were belgium. no, i didn't know they were belgium. i don't know them at all. not from before. no. >> well, that was a man who came to be the owner of the apartment which has been the subject of the siege. our security expert beside me now. >> a very noncommittal response to the interview there. he is confirming the fact that he rented the apartment to the people.
12:17 am
the main priority for the security service is public safety and to bring it to a safe conclusion. >> his big problem is explaining how those people ended up in his house and what he did and did not know on the area where everything is on going. >> it has been called a fraut morning. and two flights were diverted to salt lake city. they are on their way back to france and departed from los angeles. that occurred this morning. the latest on that is authorities cleared both air france flights bound for paris from the u.s. diverted as we know earlier on. air france flight 65 from los angeles diverted and all those on on board safe. they think they were hoax calls made to the authorities there. >> talking about anonymous and just explain to people why the police operatives we see there
12:18 am
wear those masks. that's to keep them anonymous. >> that's right. so they can't be identified. they are going in to actually deal with the suspected it terrorists and they become targets themselves. they wear it to hide their identity. the other police are not viewed as a prime target. >> so we have been listening to our sister network sky news out of the uk. obviously they are reporting on the same developments we are. in fact, the entire world is watching the developments unfold here in -- that we are watching in paris, france. once again just to recap, they are still saying that five suspects have been arrested in this active siege and police intervention on the the streets in the neighborhood of saint-denis. and wallly ferris has been with us all nightlong and benjamin collins, a former green beret.
12:19 am
i pose this to you, gentlemen. we are talking about this and you can never stop talking about it because we are seeing now that five other arrests have taken place. we don't believe the other five arrests are from the particular building or apartment where they are con ducking this siege. conducting this siege. we do see a lot of police activity now though, police walking back and forth. we heard a report earlier that a prosecutor thought it was nearing an end. we can see that is obviously -- there has not been an all clear yet. the five other arrests, my point is, as you were talking earlier that something else is being planned? the reason i ask that is because of the video threat, the threat made on video by isis in the aftermath of the friday 13th attacks on terrorists, that they would be coming after paris and other
12:20 am
targets again? >> we really need more information about the location, the whereabouts of these persons who are arrested. if they were arrested in several locations in paris, within paris or the suburbs, it means that the french authorities, law enforcement are going to multiple areas and they have information and they have a list and they are arresting them. that would be one thing. if those were arrested in and around the location of where the operation is taking place, that's a different dimension. it can mean many things. all of these scenarios may fall as soon as france spokesperson will tell us. i think we will know that within the next hours to come. we are at the point now where we really don't know if the operation with the french police will end that network
12:21 am
today and now with a surrender or an elimination of these individuals, or if this is going to trigger the activation of other cells. i am sure around the world you could be sure that all experts and analysts of government and private sector are really focusing on this one issue. where are they now? with the arrest and with the elimination, it is an interaction of a much wider interaction that will fall in line with what isis probably wanted to see happening and says should happen. >> like a domino affect. you kill one and others come out. it is like a hydro. ben jaw minch, we used to -- benjamin, we called them like roaches. you hit the nest of the enemy and before you know it they start to pop up everywhere and you have to take full measure in making sure all of them are liquidated and taken away from
12:22 am
ever threatening you again which raises the issue here in the united states should the american people be more on the foot of being vigilant? not fearful, be vigilant. if you see something, say something. we know our police departments and our security teams have been hard at work and our intelligence services and the fbi director says there are at least 900 cases in all 50 states related to isis that they are investigating. that should be shocking to anyone living in this country. >> yes, certainly. if you see something, say something. you're right. vigilance will be the key. if you look at a society -- if you look at a society i think kind of the way we were pre 9/11, right? like we said before, it is never gonna happen here. you look at a society such as
12:23 am
israel especially how you can see how -- it is a very different feel of society there. they are always on the alert. they expect something to happen in their actions during the day. take that into account. i think we have turned the page. i think we can make go back. i think we are in a phase of a war right now is it this will be a global fight. like you said the only way you can get rid of cockroaches is number one kill all of the cockroaches in the house and then figure out why they are there in the first place and get rid of that. i think that -- you know, i think walid is on to something and this could have been a precursor for another event, and perhaps he can speak to
12:24 am
this better than i can, but i certainly remember after the charlie hebdow attacks and there was this talk that came out of isis and their intent to separate society. their intent to enforce the muslim society within europe to pick a side. you are either with us organs us. or against us. i think these types of attacks is their way of driving that home. the more they do it -- look, they created a media frenzy in this horrible thing that took place a few days ago, and it opened the door for them where they say look maybe there is a crack in this kind of gap. >> you make a very good point. i was talking on saturday with senator dan coates. i said our forces took out jihady john and they took out the head of isis in libya.
12:25 am
yet, the narrative was one back by isis conducting this terrorist attack on friday the 13th. it is really disturbing to many in congress and the military and in terms of our intelligence services that isis continues to gain the narrative. what must be done to change that and turn that around? >> you can see there is a race between the western countries lead by the united states still and the french and british and others. going after middle range leaders , upper range leaders with the drones and the sophistication and special operations. usually the west does that well. we have technology and a lot
12:26 am
of other things. those results are brought to the public. these results satisfy our public. they do not deter on the other side. this is not something people would like to hear about. the the jihadists are not impressed. many analysts think, yes, this will deter them. because they are precisely radicalized. death does not scare them. what scares them is they lose those commanders and they are under attack by their own societies at the same time. then they are disoriented. what we are doing in our strategy -- it used to be against al-qaeda, but it is against isis. we are doing it on the upper level, but we are not doing enough with arming and supporting the societies to going a guerrilla. for example the kurds scored a great victory last week.
12:27 am
after a year and few months. this should have been done last year. across the fight in syria and eye wrack against isis, we don't see ourselves really active in mobilizing the populations against them. their response is in the west against our population. they know that two or three jihady individuals in the west can shutdown a city. five or six are doing that now to paris. my concern is that their numbers are growing in the west. by indock indoctrination and it is what is the reaction of the city. this is a very important test what is happening today. if the french can close that operation right now and make sure that this is not going to reach another cell and a third cell, it would be a good day.
12:28 am
if this will drag very long and at the end of the day you will see another cell moving we will be entering a new era. >> also i would say that one in my opinion i think the sengen agreement needs to go on you way. go away. the biggest difference between european and american capability is going to be in two things. one their response in terms of a tactile response and -- there are three things, excuse me. it is constant rehersing and three the intelligence mechanisms. what i watched on that night when this thing happened, they didn't just do one. they kicked off five or six events at one time. what that did was split the control elements of the paris
12:29 am
national security elements. >> if i may, gentlemen, let me add this. i recall covering -- reporting from iraq during the iraq war in 2004, and one of the things we used to talk about -- we would follow what was going on , and you'd hear one explosion taking place in the heart of baghdad, and then a short time after police and first responders would respond to that. you would hear a follow on explosion to take them out as well as the innocent by -- bystanders who would go to the the first explosion to help out. it was a distraction and destruction and they used it to their advantage in baghdad and in all of iraq. that was the problem so many of our coalition forces had to contend with in trying to get rid of the terror attacks in flicked it upon them and upon
12:30 am
the innocent people who are trying to live and develop their lives for something better. it makes sense to what you are saying that what we saw in paris, france on friday the 13th reminded me of that. >> and kelly, look, that's why we go back to why is it so important to defeat iraq and isis and syria? you get thousands of these foreign fighters and thousands of europeans who have gone over there and they learn. there is no greater classroom than conducting war itself. they learn the tactics and procedures. they learn from the guys executing those missions in iraq. they trained for it. they come back over through greece and hop in a van and drive to brussels or paris or get on a train. that's a concern. that's why they are
12:31 am
intrinsically tied. >> it goes to the point of what was said -- and i will go back to his words exactly. it was president bush said we must take the fight there so that we can be protected here. that's paraphrasing what he said, but you just said it too. the fight has to be taken there rather than see it happen on our shores. >> right. if i may interject here. >> yes, please. >> if i may interject, if we ask the questions of last week and we are living now these moments with the french people in paris to close this insurance -- incident what would be the absolute priority of isis in the west? if i ask this question what should the answer be? the absolute priority in my view -- i would take your
12:32 am
views as well, but it is to insert as many jihady fighters on the content in europe and eventually here. they need numbers of these jihaddests. they will use them in what they perceive are urban fights. a liberal democracy is not to conquer. it is not to invade. it is to paralyze their decision making process system so that foreign policy goes down. if they want to defend themselves against the air force and the navy in the east, what they want to do -- they want to terrorize new york and london and los angeles. forfortunately in the united states by projection they don't have the numbers and the positioning they have. the weakest link, the weakest
12:33 am
place which is one of the strongest is france. they have those numbers and the positioning. that's why the largest number of french jihadys going back to france is a dangerous issue. the french government has no choice now but to do what they are doing right now. >> we heard from our reporter who is on the ground there in paris, france. the psyche of the people of france is off kilter right now as one can expect. you go through a shock anytime something like this happens. it happened to us as a nation during 9/11. there is post traumatic stress syndrome and depression, fear, despair. you try to look for the better values of hope and faith and getting back to a place of saying i had my equalibrium back. gentlemen, stay with us. i just want to recap what we
12:34 am
are looking at. we are looking alt police and security forces in saint-denis , france. it is a paris neighborhood that is near the national stadium of paris, france where the attack took place on friday the 13th. it happened right there at the football stadium and then the theater and the cafes. we should mention that france's president was actually at that football game when the first bomb went off there. for the natdly a good thinking security officer who checked the guy and discovered he had a vest. he backed up away from the stadium and then triggered his suicide vest and blowing himself up. you can just imagine the carnage that would have
12:35 am
unfolded had he been able to enter the stadium. the president was rushed out of there and the president went on to say this is an act of war and he vowed retaliation and go the to it quickly. they have been maintaining air airstrikes and russian airstrikes. rush should you got involved because of what happened to their plane. isis is accused of taking down their metro-jet flight. returning vacationers to their home in russia. all 224 people aboard the flight and isis took credit for downing the plane. russia president vladimir putin vowing to take revenge and retaliation against isis.
12:36 am
we are now looking at the scene at the saint-denis neighborhood where the raid began with two blasts followed by an hour of gunfire. we heard the gunfire earlier. an eruption of gunfire. you can hear an explosion and it is a wallet and see -- wait and see. we are told one person is holed up in that particular apartment building. two suspects and a passerby was killed. one was a female wearing a sigh side belt. another suspect was shot by a police sniper and an innocent passer by. we also know five people have been arrested in connection with this. we don't know if they are in other parts of the neighborhood or the staple neighborhood. on the phone is wallly and benjamin collins. again sir thank you for your service.
12:37 am
joining us is a -- is dn who is a former secret service agent and corrected president -- protected president obama. thank you for joining us this morning. it is early in the morning on the east coast and all over the nation. i want to ask you on your perspective on terrorism and experience as a secret service agent, what do you make of these events that we are seeing since friday the 13th and now this police siege or intervention that's underway? >> they are frightening, no doubt. i am pretty confident that the gign, their anti-terror team was involved in the raid. they are renouned throughout the world and the tactile community being highly skilled operators. they are highly competent. i did an operation in paris
12:38 am
with president bush when i was on the presidential protection division and i didn't work with those people. they are terrific. what is going is a reverse engineer. they are breaking down context they may have had. social networks. they will bibbing up and overturn. every clue they have, they will make sure do prevent the possible additional attack that no stone is left unturned. they are more than competent to do so. >> the threat still exists. the threat is going out in the aftermath of the attack when we saw the video from isis. someone on that going on to issue a threat to paris saying more risk is coming. they are issuing a threat to the uk and the united states. congressman peter king was on this air and so many other
12:39 am
members of congress and basically stating that the the united states remains target number one. we are a large country and to some degree that is to our advantage. tell me what we have to do on this soil and we are seeing it happen in places like new york where our police are putting out their con tear terrorism forces and making sure people are to be protected. what do we do? >> two things. i worked counterterrorism cases before. and we have always come across two things that seem to be limiting factors in our success here. number one, the surveillance infrastructure in the united states has to be increased. ii am not talking about nsa. physical surveillance. the old school art of watching people suspect assisted of being involved in terrorist --ism from. we are limited.
12:40 am
kelly, these are labor intensive operations. obviously if you are watching somebody who -- you are talking logistic support with multiple people. eight-hour shift and potentially 12-hour shifts. these are long days. also intel sharing. even after 9/11, we have done a better job at it. but there is a lot of work to be done. there is these 10 see at the different verticals and the horizontals. there is still -- they were hesitant to give up the information and i understand why. you can't have everybody knowing what is going on. there is another side where if we are not sharing information and the information is not getting out there, the state local and county entities don't have their finger on the
12:41 am
pulse. they don't have the contact. of. >> those things we can fix. it would be a factor of hiring and more intelligence share. >> that's one of the reasons the fbi or at least the field officer in new york sent the fbi sghts to paris to assist there because of our expertise in information gathering. to your point also does it mean one of the greatest assets we have is having our on -- don't get me wrong. having our own infiltrators, those who can pose and go in and find out exactly what is going on? >> absolutely. these groups are notoriously tough to crack. they are savy to what an outside presence would look like. and they are extremely
12:42 am
dangerous. pre 9/11 we had gotten away and folks who work in the intelligence community can vouch for me on this one that we got away from this one. after 9/11 we made more of an effort to do that. that may be another focus where we may have to really either double or triple down. they are notoriously difficult groups to crack into. >> while you said that it brings up a question i have for ben. ben, as a former green beret and working with the green beret, i will go back to experiences. he met some fixers. these are men and women who were actually brave enough and coordinate with. >> they were on the ground to help us in our target ago --
12:43 am
acquisition of places that needed to be hit and dealt with. as a green better ray did you work with people who are in these strongholds and acting on one side to give you the information dism it is a risk for them, but it is necessary to get the human intelligence. >> i have. people are motivated by -- generally it came down to a sense of patriotism or more often than not money. >> you can certainly pay for that. if you find somebody motivated by money there is a chance you got out bid. specifically to iraq certainly. the great success we had in iraq was -- we call them the sons of iraq. it was the an boor wakening and the sunni tribes.
12:44 am
we spent a lot of time and effort bringing our side to defeat the enemy. that's another consequence of some of our policies are misguided. when we assisted on a democratic majority-lead government. when the shiites came to power in baghdad they pushed the sunnies out and we got out of there. those -- i would say some of those are our best allies and the people that had the ability to go into the villages block by block and pile knew them and they were helping us. unfortunately thosing those figures are not our allies anymore. and we lost a significant human capabilities. >> to be honest, i could put together a plan on the back of a napkin in about three minutes. i mean we have enough
12:45 am
intelligence right now in terms of target that exists. if we had the will -- if the president had the will we could prosecute those targets. once we start getting down and once we actually -- they will start re-taking mow cul and if we ever get back in but certainly mosul. you have been embedded organization within a civilian population. that will take time. there are plenty we can be prosecuting right now with the information we have. >> dan to his point, there is a lot that can be done right now. and he talked about the president. i don't need you to disci vol knowledge what you and the president talked about. is he aware? many say he is out of touch with this issue. did he express anything -- i mean wasn't -- this was a been s since 2011,201 unwith.
12:46 am
we need to call this enemy what it is. >> people who surround the president our national security operation is second to none. that's the disturbing part about the whole thing. you say he was sig nor rant about it, and well, you don't have to worry about what the intentions are. but he is aware and the problem here is his policy of regionally containing isis and allowing it to wither away and rot from the insideit doesn't take into account he is no longer operators. you candies mate him on the ground. you can custom land mass and it is a turnth of what they have now. kelly if they pull off a

successful tactile assault, new york, los angeles and miami isn't that weird. >> you can't measure success in a region not in the united states when they are not regional operators in iraq and syria and they are looking to do damage here which nobody doubts at this point. >> his response has frustrated a lot of military leaders and a lot of members of congress including his own party. so what will it take to have a wake up call and realize we have to get ahead of the game rather than falling behind. we will take exception as noted in the news conference from tour re. they were listening to reporters were asking and i always learn you can't get anywhere with malicious talk and pointing the finger, and you can certainly learn a lot

when you . your finishing esh at yourself in the mirror and ask the question what else can i do to make this a better day? and find an on going solution to an on going problem. >> clearly he has been inoculated from pressure from republicans. it should never be in a political issue where they are c's and everything is a political issue. i think it will only happen with internal pressure from his own party. you probably heard dianne feinstein. her comment saying look, isis is not contained. it is in direct contradiction to the president's words. it is going to take some internal pressure from his own party to say listen this can't happen. this has to be priority number

one for the commander-in-chief of the united states. once he is pressured by his own party this containment policy will go out the window. >> again for those who are watching or just tuning in, we are following the breaking news developments coming ut on of ferris, france. so much has been going on since friday the 13th when 129 people were killed in a terrorist attack. woo we know police have won ducted a massive manhunt for two people in particular, one believed to be the mastermind and the other was key responsible. he asked him to cross to belgium on saturday. one of his brothers, he was approached by police.

we are seeing here, gentlemen, that we have a situation on our hands where people are willing to sacrifice their own lives and kill themselves in order to take out the innocent people where they inflict their pain. bolt -- both of you stay with us. i want to go to my friend and colleague greg who joins us live from paris now with more details about what is possibly unfolding . greg we have been looking at this all nightlong, all morning long. a community being awakened to the sound of gunfire and disturbing the peace once again. greg you are live from paris. tell us what's going on? >> kelly, we are just outside the cordoned that the police and soldiers are set uper here in the center of this town. it is a mile outside of the

paris main metropolitan area. about three blocks from where we are we believe two suspected it terrorists are still holed up in the building. it all started about local time and 4 oocht 30 in the morning with what was described by neighbors as one hour of sliewtd war -- absolute war, explosions and ak47 gunfire, stun grenades. the police and the army we are looking at a dozen soldiers, special force police and trucks related to emergency evacuation of citizens of other individuals here. what happened was two, as we understand it, suspected it terrorists are dead. one was a woman who was wearing a suicide vest.
12:52 am
she killed herself. the other suspected it terrorist who died we understand was killed by a police sniper. there is a third person reported dead. we don't have this confirmed. a passerby who was hurt and then died from gunshot wounds. a massive gun fight going on in those early hours of the morning between the police and the security forces and those inside. the person police think possibly could be inside, and this is amazing, kelly, and we don't know if it is true, but it is the mastermind of the operation friday night which left 129 people dead, 350 injured and that wreaked havoc on the city and it brought france to a state of emergency. his name is abdel -- abdel
12:53 am
hamid abaaoud. we said he was in the capitol of the caliphafe of isis. and he was the mastermind of the operation and he was pulling the strings from syria. and now police are saying that he is suspected it to be right here and right next to paris and right about maybe about a half a mile away from one of the targets that was hit on friday night. the soccer stadium. we can hear one bit of gunfire right now. we are monitoring the situation because right now the situation is quiet. we haven't heard any shooting since we have been here, and we have been here 20 minutes. no explosions. the one soldier warned us, you are going to hear a lornlg blast, but it was a controlled

destination. we have not heard that either. as it turns out the police stormed the apartment building where they believed the mastermind might be and then encountered a large amount of gunfire and large amount of explosives and we are forced back out. before they were faced back out of the building they detained five suspects. i think they arrested five possible terrorist suspects. >> they arrested five and they believe two suspects are holed up in the apartment building. again three or four blocks from where we are. two terrorist suspects have been killed and one passerby. if i can paint a picture here -- i will step aside and let my cameraman, pierre, zoom in and let you have a shot of this. we are looking at soldiers. we could be in afghanistan. we could be in iraq.
12:55 am
we are in a leafy suburb of paris. this is what what is around the main focus of attention. we are about three blocks away. i imagine it is three blocks in all directions. it is about 10 to 15 blocks have been sealed off awaiting for the res dyings of this -- resolution of this. it is a standoff, but it is again very quiet. is pierre is showing you what we are seeing and in addition to dozens of soldiers moved in along with the police and special forces you are seeing citizens. you are seeing residents. you are looking at a mother and a child and perhaps another woman there. life strangely goes on to some degree and we are what looks like the middle of a war zone, kelly. >> and greg it is a tough

situation to be in. what a picture. you can see a mother and a child and another woman -- that actually looks like a man pushing the stroller. >> it looks like a couple with a child. >> it is amazing especially given the fact it is a police intervention and they tell people to stay indoors. do you think there is an all clear yet? >> people have been told to stay indoors. in fact, especially around the immediate area there has been an evacuation. the buildings around the apartment building which is being targeted by police, all individuals have been evacuated. the city hall for this town -- i think it is best to call it a town. the city hall for this town is about 200 yards away from the apartment building that's being targeted and all of the apartments around the targeted

building have been evacuated to that city hall. there is evacuation. hello, how are you doing? bonjour. we are talking to residents. what is your name? >> eric. i am yes, german. i am visiting. >> what do you think of this area is turned into a war zone. >> i don't know if it is a war zone. i think they are doing the right thing. it is dangerous. >> did you hear the shooting. >> no, we woke up about 5:30. there was a helicopter on top of the buildings and it stayed there so i knew something was going on. >> they said you slept through the blast. >> what's your name? >> yawn marciello. he doesn't have a clue what is going on. >> maybe in a couple years you can explain that you were in a secure and dangerous time.
12:58 am
thank you very much, eric. we are live now on fox news. we are on in the united states right now. atthank you very much, sir. he slept through it. that's remarkable. it was supposed to go on for an hour with explosions and with ak47 fire and detonation. i guess some people are a little more sound sleepers than others. >> thank you for talking to that gentleman because he is stout of heart, but he is also someone who in the midst of all of that turmoil just gives us a nice, thin line of hope that someone can get up in the morning and go face the day with all that is going on and still go on with their life. that's really, really something that we need to be mindful of. we know the people of paris, france have been rocked to their core since all of this unfolded. stick with us. we hillary start this hour. but we would like you to stick with us and we would like to get to our friend and

colleague, amy kellogg as well. greg, thank you for talking to that gentleman. i think for our viewers who have seen nothing but a police siege and intervention that is necessary and must be done to take out people who have -- who are determined to take away that way of life of we just saw that people have resolve. resilient enough, bold enough, hopeful enough, courageous enough to take life by the horn and live it to the fullest. and to meet that young child. thank you so much. what a great thing to to see in the midst of all of that turmoil. we will take a pause and then restart again. we will have amy kellogg and all of our reporters who are no doubt on the scene there in paris, france. thanks once again.
