believe now to be high-powered rifle. >> and as we mentioned before we went to the local report there are people reportedly inside with the shooter, who are alive. there are those who have been injured and those who are dead. >> now we turn it over to harris faulkner as our coverage continues. >> i am harris faulkner in for shepard smith. we're following breaking news, and much information just coming in. reports of a shooting near a planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs was how this first came in. then reports indicate can at least one police officer was hurt, and now we know beyond that, what we have just been able to pick up in the last short little while -- this is a couple of people from different sources giving this to us. one, our own fox affiliate, they're telling me what i'm seeing consistently and that is there is a possibility we have at least three police officers injured. the story is changing rapidly.

we're told two of them appear to be safe. and that law enforcement on the ground is now working to get that third police officer that they know is hurt, to safety. we can also tell you that there are conflicting reports about where this guy is and what is happening with him, but one consistent thing is, according to the gazette, the colorado springs gazette, he seems to be contained in one area. now, the area that they cor -- cordoned off is on centennial boulevard and that's a pretty big space. there's shopping center people are being told to shelter in place. he expand heather were interviewing one who had coworkers in super cuts, locked up in a break room that what way want to be do, shelter in place. it jonathan hunt ready for us? tell me the latest. >> reporter: well, harris, this all began just a little over an

hour ago, and our first inkling it was an active shooter situation was the colorado springs police department putting out a tweet that, yes, there was an active shooter. yes, that active shooter was near a planned parenthood. let's emphasize once again in the early reporting here that we do not know for sure whether the planned parenthood clinic was the target. we do not have any indication what the motive of the shooter was at this point, but the ongoing situation is this. a police commander now confirming to the colorado springs gazette that three officers have been injured in what was obviously at one point an ongoing gun battle with this shooter. the area cordoned eave now. she shooter is said to be barricaded inside a building. some reports say that is the planned parenthood building. again, we do not have 100% confirmation that is the case, but we are seeing some tweets

from some people reaching out directly to the colorado springs police department saying i am in the building with a lady. we are unhurt at the moment. please help. the colorado springs police department answering that person via twitter saying please send us a precise location. as you say, large area cordoned off now. we have heard reports there are ominously a line of ambulances waiting to get into that area, but obviously at the moment, police are deeming it far too dangerous there are s.w.a.t. teams on hand. we are also hearing, harris, that for the last little while at least, there have been no sounds of gunshots being fired. a witness earlier on fox was saying that she believed she heard something like 36, three dozen rounds being fired, which would show the intensity of the battle between the cops and this shooter, but for the moment it

appears to be quiet. that might bolster the reporting that this shooter is in the words of one reporter there, contained. but they clearly at this point have not taken him down or indeed taken him or her, i should say, into custody. so this, as far as we can tell, very active, very dangerous shooter situation, still ongoing in the heart of colorado springs, harris. >> sounds good. jonathan, before i let you go -- i know you're working the story. specifically would you have a moment to look into what stores are in that strip mall? we're starting to see now on twitter people are reaching out from inside the stores. i'm curious to know how many shops we're talking president ae one of the piece nets puzzle has ban reporter i followed on twitter, fox 21s in kody fisher and joan us on the line. are you with us? >> yes, i am. >> quick question for you. this is just coming through via the executive director of the

colorado fraternal order of police. he is saying the gunman has shot an unknown number of people and that may be why we're seeing all the ambulances. i see from your tweets that you are thankfully in the zone that police are saying is most dangerous. please take care and bring us up to speed. >> thank you. i will stay safe. centennial and fill moremore is where i'm at. there's a japanese restaurant, wild wings, a spines and vines, a gas station, normal shopping center, subway, a grocery store. and just the last few minutes, police have come over to us and told us that three officers are injured two of them are safe, one of them is still -- they're still trying to get to him and get him away from the scene but that has been told to news the last couple of moments. >> i want to ask you a little

bit also just about the whole area there, because a lot of times we'll get word. we're fortunate that most schools are not in session today but what is in that immediate location, that mile and a half or so along centennial boulevard where they're watching? >> houses. apartment buildings. it's a very residential area. i live myself not that far from here. so, it is a very residential area. this is one of the only shopping centers in probably a couple square miles. so people come here to shop. >> and as far as you know, when this first started, the early reports were that someone was shooting at passing cars. is that what you heard? that would be a very different scene than what we have playing out now. >> reporter: i cannot confirm or deny that report. when i came on scene, centennial boulevard was closed from the garden of the gods site.

i had to drive around to get where i am right now. i cannot confirm or deny. i have not seen anything other than police officers holding machine guns at this corner and planning out their next move. >> all right, cod -- kody, i may have to ask your help to navigate something that couple in. we have amateur video from people, and you can see people -- look at that in the background, people running to safety if you look closeliful this is our first look at this together. you see the person's name to the left upper side of the screen who would have taken this. everybody's got their own device now and so we see things sometimes from the perspective of eye witnesses. it looks to me, there were quite a few people, maybe in this area. i don't know if they were in those restaurants, the shops you mentioned. today is not technically a holiday so schools are not session but a lot of people out

shopping. >> reporter: absolutely. it's black friday. it's your typical black friday type of shopping center, but there's stale people out, especially on a holiday. you're right, kid aren't in school and people are most like live out with families. >> all right. i'm sorry. didn't mean the to cut you off. the last little while you heard an uptick in the number of police officer weather have been injured. has that been since the whole thing began or was this a rolling situation. >> reporter: from my knowledge it's a rolling situation. i'm not sure. when i arrived on scene i knew initially of one officer who had been injured. we saw someone being put into an ambulance, whether that was aen officer, die not know, but we saw the person being put into the ambulance, and then we got word of a second officer and then the third. that is how we have been informed of the situation.

>> the way this is being reported -- it came in this way but i caution people to not connect too many dots that haven't naturally come through the facts because we don't know yet from asking law enforcement on the ground, and you haven't been able to get close enough yet to do that, but this is being connect with the planned parenthood clinic there. but infact -- in fact we adopt know if this had anything to do with the clinic other than the fact he either plan in there or ran around it. >> we can't confirm or deny because when i was told about the shooting, it's the shooting near planned parenthood, near the kings super. that's what it was told to me. i don't know if the person was running around outside, but all we know ills -- is that both shop can centers are close. the planned parenthood parking lot is next to the main shopping center. >> a couple of new develops to tell people about.

and i'll also enumerate the stories in the area. kody fisher, we'll come back to you, please stay safe. we know you're actually inside the zone and might have been the timing of you getting there so quickly, but you're inside the zone police are calling dangerous. per our catherine herridge reporting, the fbi stands ready to assist as requested but at this opinions the colorado -- point the colorado springs police department is handling the situation. we can also tell you the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms, the state patrol this el paso county sheriff's office is as well on the scene. so you have multiple law enforcement agencies that have shown up. and we do not know if all of those at least three police officers, who have been injured in this, were from one single police department or all from the colorado springs police department or possibly from any of these other neighboring municipalities or anybody else who might be handling this.

as you just heard reporter kody fisher with fox 21 the say this seems to have been a rolling situation, from one location the next location. we're not sure how that happened. i if this guy was driving or on foot, what the scene looked like, yet. it was a rolling situation so we're not certain which law enforcement agencies these injured police officers all -- at least three of them would cove ham from. we're think agent least one from the cost springs -- colorado springs department because the fop has been giving us some information on at least one. so that lets you know who is looking into this. and now, what the gunman was wearing. hunting gear. this is per the "usa today," hunting gear and this person barricaded himself inside a planned parenthood clinic in colorado brings. opening fire repeatedly on police officers through the windows of the clinic. now we're learning more. whether or not that clinic had

nothing do with his movement, he ended up there. and so now what we're learning, law enforcement authorities and media reports locally are indicating that several people, civilians, have been hit, including those three police officers, which we have been able to confirm. rounds coming through the windows. one police officer telling the dispatcher on the police scanner. and then the executive director of the colorado fraternal order of police saying the shooter has barricaded himself in that planned parenthood clinic, and multiple victims. the shooter described as a gunman in a long coat, with a hunting type hat. and again, a lot of police activity on the radio. so lot of what we have is there. at one point one police officer said, we have another officer down by the dumpster. so that may have been where we went from two to three. that third man is the one they're trying to bring to safety. that much we know. let's go back.

do we have jonathan hunt for us? just to review now the alcohol, tobacco, firearms bureau on this, the state patrol on this, of colorado. the el paso county sheriff's office, giving assistance to the colorado police department, and the fbi, per catherine herridge, standing by. can we pop this lookup of the area. we have a schematic from the air. looks like a google image. this will show you how close they are to, a. residential area and -- right there in the center of the science send tenial. that's a pretty big road from the bottom to the top of your screen, the planned parenthood on the left bottom side and then the next residential area, that is campbell -- camel back point apartments. this in the direction of guard on the gods. my family used to live there

it's a heavy tourist destination. don't know how many tourists today because it's a lot of heavy snow falling right now and the temperature currently is 17-degrees let's go back to jonathan. your standing by? >> reporter: we have one witness now who, according to the colorado springs police department, describes the alleged shooter as being about 6'0", white mail, white beard, as you were saying, wearing gear that looked according to a couple of witnesses like hunting gear. now, we should point out that hunting gear in colorado springs, as you know very well, harris work not be uncommon clothing to be wearing around that area, particularly at this time of year, as wellos you see there's a lot of snow on the ground, and according to reports on the scene it is still snowing. this is obviously still an active situation. it does appear that this gunman

is, according to a lot of the reports from local media, barricaded in the planned parenthood building. there do appear to be some people in there, at least i have seen one tweet, for instance, again, directly from the colorado springs police department, responding to someone who said they were in the building with another lady. that tweet from that person ended with, please help, and the colorado springs police department were tweeting back saying, tell us your precise location. so, clearly, very fluid situation. a very active situation. three officers we know are injured. the police commander on scene was at pains to point out that none of those injuries appear to be at this point life-threatening. that same commander did also confirm, though, that a number of civilians -- did not give a precise number -- a number of civilians have also been injured, and he did not get into the condition of those

civilians. so theirs ongoing operation, very dangerous, and once again, harris, just before we wrap it up here, we should emphasizes we do not know the moat tv of -- the motive of the shooter or the plaid clinic was his target or if that's where he end up. it is in kind of a strip mall location. there's a king's super bowl market, subway restaurant, a japanese restaurant, and this planned parenthood clinic as well as certain other stores. so we do not know just to emphasize, what the initial target was, whether some reports have said this shooter was randomly shooting at passing cars and then just ended up in the planned parenthood clinic, or whether that was his initial target and that did provide some sort of motive. all of that will become clear in the coming hours. there is certainly no need to rush to judgment on those matters at this point.

>> an excellent point as we look live the pictures. you can see the huge amount of law enforcement response to this. and you can only imagine what it's like for thieves guys because they have three of their own that are down. two we understand have been evacuated from the scene to safety. the third one, according to what just came out a minute and a half oak issue still has not been reached. and we don't know what his situation is. so, we're looking live now. you can see the picture kind of freeze up and go back moving. that happens with live pictures. that's the name of the game here. plus you have the weather that moved in there, too. you heard jonathan talking about what is in the area. we showed you that, what looked like more of a google earth vision of it. but there's a tcf bank. that wouldn't have been open at this point but could i be wrong. there's a chase bank. you have that planned parenthood clinic, which the shooter is said to be contained someplace in or around, and i want to make that specification because there

some wildly conflicting reports he has been detained. that is not what we're being told and i'm seeing some revocation of tweets and that sort of thing as people are changing that word to "contain. "which is an interesting word because you saw the huge show of force. if they haven't circled this guy you can bet he is not going to move. he's not going to get out. there's a king super's grocery store, ups delivery store, subway restaurant. so there's quite a bit in the nearby area here, and all of those people, both in these areas or these stores that i mentioned in that strip mall, and those that are adjacent or nearby, are being told to shelter in place. for most schools across america today is not in session. so, we don't have the lockdown situation at schools. but you do have people in these other areas, and these stores and whatnot. it is black friday. i want to bring some somebody who covered breaking news on

these things, rots wheeler, former d.c. homicide investigator joining us by phone. roger, are you with us? >> yes, i. a. >> as we look at the scene -- i'm not sure how much you can see. you see one, two, three, four ambulances right here. i just want to get your thoughts on what you know about what happened. >> i can tell you i have been following this situation for an hour and just so that the viewers know this is a very fluid situation. what does that sunshine it sounds leak the police, as you indicate earlier, have this person or persons contained. that does not mean, though, they have absolutely eradicated the threat. the threat is still there but they have the threat contained within an area, within a perimeter. so that's why, harris what you see on the screen, with the kinds of like the dragnet that the officers have create there, they know that person is within that perimeter. what they don't know is exactly where. i'll tell you another of what they don't know. what they don't know is how many

other victims may be on the inside, and that's why you see the ambulances still lined up because they want to be at the ready just in case there are more victims on the inside. it sounds like they're also trying to determine the type of weaponry that was used by the person because that can be huge, and whether or not there's any other danger in the area, such as bombs or explosives. we always have to consider that in these active shooter situations. >> i'm kind of leaning into some of the things coming in across our urgent queue right now. the commander with the colorado springs police department is telling local reporters three officers injured. i don't know how many civilians right now. that's quote. the report asks any fatilities? the response from the commander, don't know yet. i don't know that much because we haven't been able to get into the scene. what does that tell you about the type of fire power the person has or maybe -- it would be a horrible thing -- there are

people near or with this sydnor danger and they can't move in the way they would want to. >> you're absolutely right. the reason i say that is because if the police could get into the building or the area they have contained, they would go in there, but they can't get in there right now because, like i said, they don't know exactly how much firepower this guy has they don't know, sound dozen me from following this, if it's one person, two people. they don't know. and then again, like i said in terms of the amount of victims on the inside, they don't know that yet either but they're going to go in and that's why the elite team of swat members you see there are going to go in and go room-to-room, building to building until they snuff the person out. but until they do that, they cannot say the situation is over, inflame this person is either disabled completely, by shooting and killing him, or taking him into custody. >> rod, are you near your television right now? can you see -- i know you're joining us by phone. i want to brink everyone's

attention the fact we have a video from -- look at all of the police law enforcement that are making their way in, heads down, weapons ready, as they make they're we in to that complex that you say they probably don't have him in one location, they have to go door to door. year clearly. then the situation, we could probably have seen this -- i'm not sure if they were rolling but they just loaded up yet another victim into an ambulance. a hospital spokesperson is saying they're treating three patients from the shooting of the colorado springs planned parenthood location. that's a local hospital spokesperson. rod, back to you and get your thoughts how they were moving in. we have watched many scenes where the steps weren't so quick. they were moving quickly. >> that's the new protocol for law enforcement responding to these active shooter situations.

you get there, you have a massive presence of law enforcement, and that's why we see there on the screen multiple police agencies from colorado springs, from the area. it's not just the colorado springs police. it's the sheriff's department, you have the state police there, and they all are going to go in there now, when jaw said they're entering with their haven'ts down, weapons drawn -- theirs have down, weapons drawn that's the ready position we go into these situations expecting a battle. that's the battle position and that's why you see the officers going there like that. they do believe they're going to probably engage those guy and probably be more gunshots. that's why we see them going in and entering in that fashion. >> this is just come in. a statement from vicki cowart, the president and ceo of planned parenthood rockie mountain. quote, at this time our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement. this is a developing situation and we will continue to share updates as we have them. end quote.

that leads me to believe there are people inside that complex just like what you were saying and it speaks to the issue of the kinds of movement that we have been seeing. >> that's right. i do believe there are people on the inside. again, there's a line of ambulances that is just waiting right there outside of the perimeter. those ambulances are there for a reason, because the police honestly believe there may be more victims on the inside. that haven't been confirmed but you have to always anticipate there's going to be victims as long as this shooter is still active. that's why this is an active shooter situation. have him contained in the area but don't have him specifically locked down. so for all the viewers listening and watching in the area, it's best to stay inside. doors locked. lights out and let the police go in there room-by-room, door-by-door. they'll get the guy eventually, but until that happens people need to stay secure. >> all right. you know what, there's a viewer -- he is absolutely

right, reminding us that some of the banks are open today. it's not necessary lay holiday that peek take because it's not a federal or state holiday. i messenger threads was a chase nearby. that there was another bank nearby as well. so quite a few different types of locations. the kings super grocery store so this are locations nearby that would have a larger number of people, higher concentration of customers inside. and of course it's black friday and anything they might have been doing in other smaller stores. right now the concentration is on the planned parenthood clinic, and i just read the statement from their ceo there in colorado springs. and the dire concern for the people who would have been inside that building, that complex, that planned parenthood. rod, one thing i want to caution viewers and remind them of is the fact we don't know yet exactly what the target or targets were in all of this. planned parenthood may have been a place that had a door open that this guy can get into. he clear live was shooting at earth, -- everything from the

witness account s on the ground. >> you're exactly right. the other thing that goes with that. with these type of situations, let me just tell the viewers exactly what the police departmenting doing. they're not just looking for this one individual. they're actually trying to identify through other intelligence means who this person possibly could be. has there been any recent threats made against planned parenthood? have there been any threats that people and the police department? too so they have multiple teams of investigators right enough trying to determine who this person may be, what his motivation could have been, and then whether or not there's any other crime scenes anywhere else in that immediate area now. >> all right. the weather, i mentioned 17 degrees. snowing. not as heavy as it was at one point. what you're looking at right now, this is actually file footage and this i one of the early pictures that came in when you go back to live scene you see the weather has moved in is that a help or hinderance in terms -- if this gave is trying

to watch outside the window he may not be able to see as clearly their movements. >> it can actually be a help for the law enforcement agency because that's got to help keep this guy contained. he won't be able to run around and run outside so they're actually going to use that to their benefit. i can tell you, though, weather l the weather is good or bad they'll go in there and find him he's in there hiding out somewhere. that's where this guy is. again, the main concern here is whether or not there's anymore victims on the inside. >> i'm seeing this on the "associated press" wire. the king super grocery store, there's a chance you would have had quite a few people in there as opposed to smaller restaurant or whatnot. so, the deli, a person who works in the dillly can i kings super grocery store, reportedly overheard the store's loudspeaker just before noon, telling everybody not to leave the store. customers, we're told some couple dozen customers were

standing near the store entrances waiting for instructions. they were told please don't panic but nobody can go in our out that gives you idea how many people are affected. no just at the clinic. >> that's right. and it's that entire area down there. now, it's normal protocol for businesses such as that kings supermarket to lock their doors in an active shooter situation. if you know that the active shooter is on the outside, look your doors, keep the person from coming in, and i that's probable my why if this situation did start at the planned parenthood, let's say this guy ran outside of the planned parenthood. we would probably go to another area where there's a lot of people. so that was a good move, that they locked their doors and people continue to lock their doors and stay safe until the guy is snuffed out. >> more from kings super grocery store deli employee who is saying it's not usual lay busy day for us and no one is panicking or anything.

they had a couple dozen customers. that's loot if you're one of them. and he said they haven't told us anything except that we're not allowed to go outside. so it's exactly what you're saying. you're locking things up to prevent movement by the suspect gaining access to another location. >> exactly. and what that's going to do is enable the police department to contain the subjects within a certain parameter, or within a certain radius and that's what they've done in this situation. they know they have him in an area. just don't have him physically yet, but they know as long as they can continue to move in like we see them moving in, guns drawn, hand down reakedy for battle, they know they're going to confront him at some point. >> rod, real quickly, what we're hearing from the colorado springs police department confirming three officers injured, unknown number of civilian injuries so you have that line of ambulances. they're saying this situation is still not stable. in fact i'm seeing it from

several different plays this is still an active, fluid situation. >> it is. its -- the situation with an active shooter is never considered done or never considered finished until the person is either in custody or we know that person has been def engages -- disengaged by killing him. in this case today that's not the case. that person is still out there somewhere. they've know he is contain. right now it's very fluid. they have to snuff him out, harris. >> rod wheeler, former d.c. detective. we appreciate it. homicide detective. you being look with us today to kind of tell us how they're choreographing movements to go in and save people and try to get the shooter if in fact there are lives still in danger at this point. when you talk about the police department saying that it is an unknown number of civilians, kind of gives you an idea of the

i'm harris faulkner. we continue covering breaking news. police officers down, three of them shot, in what started a couple of hours ago is a situation outside of a planned parenthood clinic. we're understanding that the suspect somehow gained entry to the clinic, shot an unknown number of people, either going in or around the perimeter of

that clinic. other areas nearby, a strip mall on lackdown, as we revisit the situation we're looking live at pictures, heavy weather moving in. snow, 17 degrees there, as s.w.a.t., law enforcement, alcohol, tobacco firearms working on this, the fbi standing by and the sheriff's department, el pass sew sheriff's department, giving help to the colorado springs police department. three of their own, we're learning, down in all of this, two safe and one they're trying to evacuate from the scene.

as we come on n on the breaking news we want to go straight to a news conference in colorado springs, colorado. i'll catch you up but let's listen together. >> -- a little further to the north. anything being done in terms -- >> we're not evacuating any of the neighborhoods to the north. we ask people stay off of

the suspect was using a long gun. you did not hear her say they do not have the suspect yet but she went ton say he had not been contained. officers and detectives, she said, have been deployed to different businesses and locations around there. i can't tell you which ones because she didn't say to which ones but we have been giving a list for the better part of 38 minute oses so own businesses and banks and grocery stores nearby this planned parenthood location. so, we go back now to a little conflict in headlines. it sounds like at first, from different sources, including the fraternal order of police, i believe, that it looked like they had this guy contained to that complex. remember, rod wheeler, our former detective -- homicide detective expert who was with us from d.c., said that could be a pretty big area they say

contained now. we hear from her they have not contained him, which means they are still keeping an eye out. then she mentioned as one reporter asked -- i don't want to overblow this because she said anything could be a possibility but one reporter asked, is it possible that hostages could have been taken. she said anything is a possibility at this point. so i want to downplay that because we don't know. but we do know from authorities on the ground that an unknown number of people have been shot outside of the three police officers who have been shot. i understand we have a s.w.a.t. team leader who is on the phone right now. grant white, s.w.a.t. team lead are for decade for jefferson county, colorado, and you were present at columbine. i want to get your thoughts today. >> hi, how are you? >> i want to get your thoughts today on what is unfolding now. >> obviously the first thing you do in an active shooter is guess the first patrolman in through

the where he shooter us. sounds like they have engaged him and several officers were shot. and then from the details we're getting now, sounds like the person escaped from that location, whether it be be planned parenthood or that location. they start locking it down. servedly they need to build a perimeter large enough to contain that person. after that is completed, the k-9 units, in addition to s.w.a.t. units with them, need to start from the last point they had seen him and start tracking that person. i assume that's what they're doing now. and ideally he got caught in containment by law enforcement, and hopefully that is exactly what they're doing now, and then they'll find him soon ideally. >> does it communicate anything or should we make nothing of the fact that there war all these conflicting reports from authorities about whether or not he was contained. >> that's very common.

like the problems in columbine so many people made so many phone calls from different locations and what they believed they saw the person or the person might be, and a lot of these are conflicting reports. so some of the information is correct, some are what people believe from another nearby location. so it's hard to say at this point in time without anymore details if they have him contained. certainly from what i'm watching on tv, appears they did build a large premierer and they searching for the person. >> i want to run something past you in this age of social media and further, faster media, as we are covering with devices and press wires coming in, does it compromise operations like those give out too much detail? this is a public safety matter, and i'm wondering, as we look at these still shots and the video, what is your concern about that? it's important to know that to be responsible as journalists as we cover the story. >> absolutely it is, and we put
