yours, have a very merry christmas and we'll see you. >> next sunday. >> very well done. all right, guys, three, two, one. merry christmas. >> merry christmas! >> a fake bomb on a big air france jetliner. but nobody knew it was not real when pilots had to make an emergency landing. right now, five people sitting in police custody as the world waits for answers. what happened aboard flight 463? here's what we know so far. the plane was about a quarter of the way into an 11-hour flight. it took off from the island nation of mauritius and it was headed to paris. somebody discovered something in the bathroom and now we know that bathroom was a fake explosive device, a piece of cardboard with a household timer on it. pilots forced to make an emergency landing in kenya. the boeing 777 touched down
4:01 pm
safely in kenya. nobody was hurt. passengers were praising the crew for how cool they stayed under pressure. >> we didn't know what was happening, actually. we had to land and there was something wrong, like a bomb. >> well the news for us in johannesburg, africa, it seems to be as we're following this that this investigation is picking up a much more serious tone as it develops. the jet is standing there and taking over investigations. five passengers from the
4:02 pm
diverted plane have reportedly been arrested. two muslims and three christians. and they are still beinginterro. i've seen a picture of this dummy bomb and it looks real. there's a large digital clock and it's going into several sticks of explosives. the french national prosecutor is considering also getting involved. one of the questions to be asked, is this a dumb prank or a dummy run by terrorists. if a terror group is found to be behind this, it's most likely, analysts say, to be isis. as this was a french plane headed to paris full of french tourists. harris? >> you know, you're talking about some of the questions we've been learning and first this and then we'll talk again. if they sat in the same area on the plane or different places,
4:03 pm
it's very concerning. >> paul, what they are talking about, as you know, they haven't been using that word hoax because they want to be careful that people understand that this was a fake device, which could have very different intentions. and what i'm reading now is that this the fourth air france flight to be diverted because of a bomb scare in just the past month. but with investigators now across two continents, as you've been reporting, this one is unique. this is the first time that suspect has been found on board. the 777 was three hours into a direct flight to paris when the suspect found it in one of the aircraft's bathrooms. the plane made an emergency landing at the closest airport and the 459 passengers and 14 crew on board use the emergency chutes to get off as quickly as
4:04 pm
possible. one final note, fox news understands the device was found hidden behind a mirror in a bathroom cabinet on the jet raising the possibility that the device wasn't placed on board in maritius at all but in paris before the outbound flight. >> paul, thank you very much. fox news is america's election headquarters and donald trump is coming under fire from his fellow republican candidates. we're getting supportive words from the russian president vladimir putin. trump is now responding with his own words of praise. calling putin a strong leader. and this. >> if putin respects me and calls me brilliant which were, frankly, very nice, i'll accept that on behalf of our country. >> putin is known as a controversial person, to put it
4:05 pm
mildly, given russia's role in the conflict in ukraine and the strikes in syria that u.s. officials say target more than just the islamic terrorists and the claims that russian president has given orders to kill russians and donald trump says there's no proof that anything like that has happened. and other presidential candidates are weighing in on this saying that putin is nobody that they would want to win praise from. >> i wouldn't want the endorsement. i wouldn't want it. so if he's out there, that's fine. >> vladimir putin is a political actor. >> this turns things up a bit. happened about an hour ago, actually, ohio governor john kasich's campaign getting into all of this as well. they have put together what is basically a spoof website for a trump/putin ticket we have fox team coverage. last night's democratic presidential debate and we'll begin with republican side and
4:06 pm
christian fisher in washington. kristin? >> reporter: they have been going at it for some time but the difference now is that jeb bush is really fighting back and it's pushing trump to get more and more personal with his attacks. listen to what he said on "meet the press". >> he's an embarrassment to the bush family. jeb is an embarrassment to himself and to his family. >> jeb bush has become trump's most vocal opponent. yesterday he called him a jerk and said it's been liberating to go up against a guy who he believes is not qualified to be president. >> when he insults me personally, i don't take it personally and he shouldn't take it personally either. now is the time to call him out. putin is trying to destablize our relationship with our allies. he's not a serious candidate.
4:07 pm
>> and bush isn't alone in attacking trump today. carly fiorina said there's no way that trump could beat clinton in the general election. harris? >> well, there's more drama. the big feud and the republican race is between marco rubio. and senator ted cruz. those senators going at it. where does that stand at this hour? >> harris, those two have been going at it on immigration ever since the debate. cruz claims he never supported the path to legalization but rubio said that's not true. he supported a bipartisan amnesty bill and cruz deserves extra scrutiny on this issue. >> when you spend your whole time telling people that you're a clear talker and say what you mean and everyone else is a sell-out but you're the only purist, it's fair to say, here's where you have been in the past on some issues and this is where you are now. >> cruz had a chance to respond at a rally in afternoon in alabama but declined to do so. instead, he stuck to his typical stump speech. >> we will finally, finally,
4:08 pm
finally secure the borders and end sanctuary cities. >> cruz did, however, throw in a "star wars" reference. he said he watched the movie last night and found it more realistic than the democratic debate. harris? >> kristin, thank you. let's go to the democratic debate in new hampshire. three contenders, martin o'malley and hillary clinton and bernie sanders debating last night. much of the attention was not on the issues. instead, accusations flying that the democratic national committee is favoring clinton's campaign. ed henry continues our team coverage. >> bottom line, after this third democratic presidential debate is hillary clinton is very much in command. a 22-point lead over socialist bernie sanders in the latest fox poll. but the question remains whether or not there's been cod delling of clinton, whether the democratic party has been protecting their front-runner, especially after last night when
4:09 pm
bernie sanders amid all of this pre-game hype, he would take the gloves off and hit clinton over his charge that she and the democratic national committee overreacted amid allegations that sanders' aides had dipped into private collection data, voter data that was part of the clinton playbook. he apologized. clinton accepted. and everyone seemed to want to move on. the other issue, of course, was late on a saturday night, the second straight debate where we've seen that. another idea that perhaps the party is protecting clinton, especially when she slips off, such as one point on terror when she said that basically the u.s. strategy now appears to be working, something her critics insist is not true and then you have the fact that she went after the republican front-runner donald trump and said that isis is using video of trump, basically, to recruit now. something that trump today on
4:10 pm
fox insisted simply not true. >> mr. trump has a great capacity to inflame people and make them think there are easy answers to very complex questions. he is becoming isis' best recruiter. >> they turned out to be a very big pinocchio. it's ridiculous. she makes a lot of things up. >> finally, on that question of whether or not clinton is being coddled, we checked, the next democratic debate is january 17th. and there will be two nfl playoff games that night. a lot of tears on people's faces as the city marked one year since the fatal shootings of nypd.

4:24 pm
oil plunged. >> wouldn't they have been watching that before? >> well, they have been. this is a very volatile time and when the dow had the worst point in percentage losses in months, there was a lot of volatility in the market. >> to go as long as we did at a zero percentage rate, that wasn't reality. >> it was not reality. everybody thought it had to come at some point but it's not great for stocks. we see in the future's market we can expect green plus signs tomorrow. >> okay. >> until the end of the year, we are going to be doing some repositioning and trades and markets as portfolios look better for the end of the year, maybe tax strategies. >> it's almost over. >> it is. >> the wait for "star wars" is

ahhh! aw man are you kiddin' me? as the clock ticks towards the iowa caucus, according to the latest fox news polling, more than half, 65% of primary voters view trump as a serious candidate. compare that with june of this year when 64% viewed his candidacy as, quote, a side show. let's bring in the fox news political insiders. in charleston, south carolina, pat caddel and john onset with me here, former republican congressman for new york and next to him doug schoan and a
4:31 pm
fox news contributor as well. what are your thoughts? >> trump is becoming, by all accounts, a much more serious candidate in iowa. i think, though, we have to recognize that there is a two-person race developing in iowa with most polls but not all, most showing ted cruz having an advantage. trump has less of a ground game than cruz. at the same time, no one has the capacity to do what donald has done which is to shake the race up. >> before i go to you and pat, randy says on my twitter, "trump was the only republican that democrats talked about at his count nine times at their debate last night." oh, big sigh. john, what happened? >> you didn't ask me a question. >> i thought you might have a response. >> i think trump is the single most dominant candidate for a year before an election than we've ever seen. if we go back to reagan in '79,
4:32 pm
before he got elected in '80, reagan wasn't the dominate thing in '79. this guy is it an incredible machine with really doing it all by himself. and whether you like him or agree with him or not, campaigns are to change perception. so the numbers you put up, he's changed 100%, really, how republicans view him. >> are you comfortable with that? do you think the establishment will be comfortable with that? >> i am not the establishment. i am comfortable with whatever the voters want. >> that makes you not the establishment. >> that's right. the establishment is beside themselves. they have screwed this thing up not just this year. the republican party is breaking apart in front of us. we have seen it for four to six years coming apart. i hear pat because he's led the charge on this. >> pat, your thoughts? >> let me just say, first of all -- let me tell you, first of all, i believe we're at a critical change moment in this campaign.
4:33 pm
and it's an issue that no one discusses in the establishment, wasn't even mentioned on fox news this morning, sunday news or anybody else. donald trump has been handed a club to finish off this nomination. and that was the bill passed friday by the republicans as they surrendered everything to the democratic party. a year ago, the surrender created the vacuum that led to trump and to carson, to some extent, and even fiorina. the republicans of congress has sold them out and certainly they have. ryan inherentair receipted in o to get the old companies happy. they sold out everything they believed in, permanent tax exemptions for all of the things for obamacare and the dumbest of
4:34 pm
all they held the cadillac tax which would have hurt the democrats dearly with labor members this year when they had to pay those premiums was delayed two years. no wonder nancy pelosi and the democrats are standing there and obama either cheered what they want or looking like they swallowed the canary. either you're for the establishment. last point, fox news this morning discussed, oh, we don't know, how did this happen? this is what is going on, none of which these experts in washington have a clue about, including our own. >> we know how it happened. a friday afternoon going into a holiday recess. eventually if pat was right and doug, we have to talk about it,
4:35 pm
will trump take this thing and use it. >> i wrote down what pat said. "a critical changed moment in this campaign". >> here's the context, harris. the two front-runners, trump and cruz, are both outsiders. trump never in government, obviously. cruz hated by the establishment. those are the top -- >> but why, though? i know about the comments and he triggered a conversation that happened. >> he's a senator. he goes down the hall to the house and convinces the house republicans. >> also, he has turned consciously against the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. >> he called him a liar. >> they don't speak to one another. but the larger point that pat and john are making, they are so angry that no one in the so-called establishment, like jeb bush, has a chance to win.
4:36 pm
the real question is, can trump turn his supporters out and can cruz mobilize? >> so i've got another -- >> i want to defer a second on this question of cruz. because he hasn't been pushing this much either. if ted cruz continues to run an ideological campaign rather than a surging campaign, he will lose to trump. if, in fact, you have the situation where cruz and rubio, what a dumb debate going on, like two guy who is are way behind the front-runner. debating over who said what or not or what have you, instead of making their message. look, what happened in washington was capitalism and corruption. the word that must not be spoken, they paid off everybody and if trump uses that, he's the guy that doesn't take their money. he is the guy that would clean it up. those republicans will be on fire. >> all right.
4:37 pm
i want to come in and come right behind that with donald trump and ted cruz. i asked on social media, could you see a ticket with them both? they seem to not be taking shots at each other as much. what is the strategy behind that? >> look, this thing -- first of all, presidential and vice presidential tickets, whether they like each other is completely irrelevant. there's only one goal. get 270 electoral votes. ted cruz comes from texas. trump, if he's the nominee -- and we haven't had a vote cast yet. we're a little ahead of ourselves. he's going to be looking like every other nominee, how do i get to 270? >> okay. >> it always comes down for republicans, florida and ohio. they have to win both. who is going to help them win both? cruz probably isn't going to help them win both. it's going to be kasich, rubio, someone else. not that -- >> we are not that far off from february 1st in the iowa caucus. so can you map out a strategy
4:38 pm
for both of these guys? >> sure. >> and then jeb bush and marco rubio? because those seem to be the ones that we've talked about the most tonight. >> for ted cruz, he's got to win iowa. he wins iowa, he's close in new hampshire. he then would have momentum going to south carolina and then so-called s.e.c. primary. if he could then do what pat is describing, religious conservatives in the base of the party, he can win. trump can run the table if he wins iowa but that is a challenge given the vote are evangelicals. rubio's got to win somewhere. jeb's at 4%. john, can he win anywhere? >> no. jeb bush is done. we shouldn't waste our time on him. >> that is harsh. >> rubio's problem is what don said. he's not doing well in any of the early states. well enough to win the state. >> and then neither one of them are doing well in their home state of florida but that's another subject. we're going to stay with this
4:39 pm
subject. i want to talk about carly fiorina and others as well. as you heard, less than six weeks away tomorrow. >> 42 days. >> from the iowa caucuses and with a very full field of republican candidates still in the race, what roles, if any, are they beginning to fill? we love it when you tune in and chime in. get us up on our fox news page and twitter and facebook. stay close. but by night, beautiful, smoother and ready to impress the other party animals. dr. scholl's dreamwalk express pedi just serve classy snacks and bew a gracious host, iday party. no matter who shows up. do you like nuts? 4:43 pm
plans on becoming the gop nominee. so with such a crowded field, what are the roles of many of the candidates at this point? doug? >> well, let's take carly fiorina. she's not going to be the nominee. i think that's clear. what she will have is a role attacking hillary clinton in the general election because, as a woman and a woman of stature, she will help the republican party do their campaign negatives on hillary. she is auditioning for the cabinet as an ambassador. >> how do you know that. >> i think she actually thinks that she has a shot at the vp because the vice presidential candidate is the attack dog against the other ticket. she's thinking, hey, why can't i be on the ticket? >> just as a woman, that sits better than how you put it, doug, because it simplifies it so much that only a woman can

take on another woman. >> it gives her the ability to say you're a sexist for saying it. she says it and she is good at it. she has the best attack lines. >> she's good at it and not just because she's a woman. >> she will not be on the ticket because she comes from california. >> not even as a vp? >> no. >> and the fact that we're not winning california. >> pat, do you disagree? >> let me say, i think she could be for this reason. in recent years, it's been who can help me the most, not just in the states. that doesn't seem to have been a consideration in most of the races in recent years and presidential candidates have picked running mates. or i think how they blend together. that was gore and clinton. i thought carly fiorina could be a more serious candidate and didn't have anything to follow it up with, frankly and a great
4:45 pm
closing statement about taking back america and i don't under why it's not her theme at the front end. but she's really tough as nails on hillary. just as you said, john, it's easier for that. i believe she could play that role and that's an important role because hillary needs to be held accountable. the republican nominee, whoever that is, really needs to be able to make their message and not deal with her so much. >> all right. i want to talk about some of the others, john kasich, chris christie. >> chris christie has an outside chance because he's moving up in new hampshire. candidly, i don't think that he going south will be particularly compelling even if he has an upset in new hampshire. john kasich, i think he's a potential presidential candidate but i don't see him having a chance to win the nomination. >> all right. and jeb bush said this.
