we're listening to a news conference. >> our accounts initially, these are cursory accounts, we had victims go to one hospital and 11 to umc and another to springfield hospital. our transport numbers are we have six victims that are critical and we've had one victim that has succumbed to their injuries. the two ways we're looking at this and looking at our investigation two-fold, number one, was this an intentional act or number two, was this an accident? due to the area we're in with numerous cameras belonging to the hotel and our rtc cameras we will comb through that footage to get a detailed idea of what occurred. right now, from what we know, we're looking at it as possibly being intentional.

we just received that information. so we -- that is just the initial word we've gotten, the way we're looking but will look at all angles. our fatal detail and homicide detail are working together like they do on numerous investigations to make sure this is done right and we leave no stone unturned. with me also is lieutenant dan mcgraph, who heads up the homicide detail, and he can brief you a little bit more how the investigation is going to go. >> i'm dan mcgraph. talking about his portion of the investigation. >> they were walking as pedestrians on the sidewalk in front of the -- along the -- between the valleys and they were pedestrians on the sidewalk and not on the roadway.

>> and the car was hitting them on the sidewalk, into the road and back on the sidewalk, is that correct? >> our initial investigation shows there were two area s whee pedestrians were hit on two separate parts of the sidewalk so it was prior to the driveway that leads into the paris in front of planet hollywood and then over inn front of the paris. we have two separate locations where the vehicle did go into the roadway and come back up on the sidewalk. >> are frthere any traffic signs where the pedestrians were hit? >> yes. there were traffic signals at planet hollywood and paris and las vegas boulevard and paris drive. >> was the driver of the vehicle injured? >> i don't know about the injuries to the driver but the driver of the vehicle we have somebody detained. we do know that there was a toddler in the vehicle with the

driv driver, who's 3 years old and that toddler is unharmed. that driver is being detained. we're still conducting our investigation and trying to figure out how and why this occurred. >> a female toddler? >> i don't know the genders of either. >> what about the breathalyzer? >> the way our investigation would run is we would either do -- we have a drug recognition officers that would check to see if the driver of that vehicle was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and take broad or breath to see if they were intoxicated. >> was it a child or adult? >> it was definitely not a child, an adult. >> we were told they went on the

sidewalk and then back on the sidewalk and sped up and does sound like you confirmed that by saying it was in two separate locations. >> it was in two separate locations and i do not have the info you spoke to the witness with. it was in two separate locations and the driver did go from one location on the street and back to where pedestrians were in front. >> any idea if she was targeting a specific individual or just targeti ining pedestrians? >> that, i don't know. i don't know if she sped up. we have our fatal detail and people work the speed. >> did someone come up and speak to you if you have any witnesses or any who might have information. >> we know there's hundreds of people out here and have 20 witnesses along with the 26 or 7

people. if anybody is out here tonight that sees this, we will be here tonight and find a police officer and we would like to talk to you if you were a witness to this. if not, tomorrow, you can call the homicide extension, 702828-3521 for anybody -- this is tomorrow. we will set up an interview for any other witnesses that are not -- that weren't able to come tonight. >> lieutenant, is this considered a homicidal act. if it's an intentional act, that's why we are taking the criminal part of this at this point. >> how about the traffic restrictions down here with people coming in and out of the hotel? >> there is not a question about traffic restrictions. from what i've been told this person went up on the sidewalk and drove on the sidewalk and went back on this sidewalk

again. no pedestrian error involved. >> do you know when you will identify the driver? >> when she's officially booked. she may have been here at least a week. that's a question. that's what -- the information i got is she may have been here for a short period of time but she's not from here. a recent move here. that might come out later. >> would you help identify the type of vehicle involved, sedan, suv, pickup truck? >> i was told a '96 oldsmobile, regular vehicle. >> is it nevada registered? >> no. >> as far as traffic, if you could walk our people how long this might be closed and closure points are getting in and out of hotels? >> that's yet to be determined. i will wait until the fatal people are done with their measureme measurements, like any other investigation where there's been a number of people injured.

they have to measure and see all the different points they're injured. they're already marked and will be hours and i expect it will be closed most of the night. >> the people critically injured, was that the first or second time? >> i don't have that answer. >> that's all we can answer now. the chief has more information. >> we will get you this information as it comes us to and the sheriff will do a press conference tomorrow. right now, there's a lot of moving parts, still checking on conditions of the victims and trying to piece everything together on how this occurred. >> how many of the injured are children? >> that, i do not know. >> we know there are children injured, yes? >> no. i don't know the ages or the --

the ages or genders of the children. >> thank you very much, people. we appreciate it. >> wrapping up the latest bri briefing. >> we've been list of course to what's going on with las vegas in terms of police bringing an update on what unfolded on the las vegas strip that happened las vegas time when someone called 911 that something was definitely going wrong, a woman in a car, a '96 oldsmobile was driving onto the sidewalk, striking pedestrians and then apparently got off of the sidewalk, as we just heard from chief zimmerman there, getting back onto the sidewalk. two separate incidents, a total of 37 people injured, six in critical condition and one fatality unfortunately.

the police are saying they're looking at this in two different way, possibly being intentional or perhaps it was an accident. they are really looking at the possibility this could be an intentional act. the police are basically saying the woman just arrived to the las vegas area, just moved to the area. we're waiting f g foing for gid come out after they speak with her and know a sobriety test was taken and toddler was with the woman when she was driving and the so blyty test is for drugs and alcohol. we have a statement from the governor. from governor sandoval who has been aware of this situation since it unfolded. i have spoken with sheriff lombardo and will remain in contact with him as this

incident continues to evolve and additional information is released and will assure the safety of our visitors and residents and kathleen and i, assuming his wife, extend our deepest sympathies to all who are affected by this shocking and tragic event and additionally i would like to thank the first responders and medical professionals who are caring for the victims this evening and the first responders were on the scene quickly and acted quickly and they explain in detail how they were shocked to see someone driving on the sidewalk striking pedestrians. let's listen to those people after the event. >> there were people and everyone was so frantic and running around. >> walking out of the casinos

and steps here. the car rolled right in front of me. by the time i looked to the right all you could see was it driving away and people bouncing off the front of the car. the windshield was smashed at this point. >> one police officer basically stated this is a huge tragedy that has happened on our strip and clark county fire chief, gray cassel says the call for help came in around 6:38 p.m. las vegas time. this is a situation that will take all night to process. they're processing the tv cam a cameras that caught this tragedy unfolding and keep us updated throughout the evening as more . i remind you six people are in krilt call condition and car striking scores of people on the sidewalk of the las vegas strip. 37 people hurt and one died.

these are real examples i'm good to give you -- voting to say, for example, boycott israel entirely. at the same time they will say things like, we cannot pass this motion in the student union that entirely, at the same time they will say things like, we cannot pass this motion in the student union that condemns isis because it will offend muslims. . so there are some absurd positions. i take issue with the word islamaphobia, because we have to distinguish between your right to criticize any idea and your duty and responsibility to respect people. as individuals. no idea should be above scrutiny, just like no one should be above dignity. >> it's so soul crushingly benign and unimpressive.
