so all you have to do is search for the car you want, there it is. now you're an expert in less than a minute. this is truecar. we begin a fox news alert. a wave of severe weather hitting many this weekend. i'm uma pemmaraju and welcome to america's news headquarters. at this hour, a fast moving wildfire in southern california is threatening dozens of homes with a devastating storm battering the southeast causing extensive flooding and spawning deadly tornadoes. it's left dozens of families homeless on christmas and the worst may not yet be over. all this as a winter storm pushes through the central u.s. and now has the southwest bracing for what forecasters are predicting to be a quote, historic blizzard with watches

and warnings stretching from new mexico to kansas. we have team fox coverage on all of this janice dean standing by in the fox extreme weather center and will watching the wildfire in california but more on the deadly impact of tornadoes in the deep south. brian? >> the death toll i understand has risen again today. >> that's right. 17 people are now dead after two more bodies were found in mississippi today. unseasonably warm weather across the nation this winter spawning severe weather all week. tornadoes and flooding from arkansas to tennessee to mississippi leave dozens of families homeless for the holidays on christmas night in alabama, a tornado touching down in the state's capital of birmingham. three homes reportedly destroyed. some people were trapped inside. trees downed. several people taken to hospitals for minor injuries but no deaths reported. >> everybody said, tornado, the lights went out.

and they think, i know. i almost fell to the floor. almost to the bathroom. running over each other. houses were standing at the daylight. they think, i knew, i come by and everything. >> today, alabama robert bentley of the state ranched after three days after heavy rainfall. 200 roads in the state are closed due to the flooding. flood warnings are in effect for northern alabama. there was particular concern for alabama in the southeast where the pea river threatened the levee protecting the city. the governor saying the river will thankfully stay below that. >> our hearts go out to the families. i understand the clean-up continues in mississippi? >> that's right. places like mississippi, tennessee, and georgia. ten people died in mississippi and six people died in tennessee. another one in georgia after tornadoes and flooding hit those states. in mississippi more than 100

homes and businesses damaged. more than 60 people injured. families spending christmas day collecting their belongings scattering debris but communities are rallying together. volunteers and members of the marine corps to donate presents and troys to families left helpless from the storms. she was just saying there that the toys and the gifts were just piling up there from people's willingness to give out this christmas holiday. the christmas spirit at its best. >> thank you very much. live fox team coverage continues with the fast moving wildfire we've been telling you about in california. a massive 1,000 acre brush fire tearing through ventura, forcing authorities are shut down two major nearby highways earlier today. and issue a mandatory evacuation

order. will carr with more on this. will? >> reporter: the biggest threat right now is that this fire continues to burn near several oil fields in the area. those oil fields are held to the same restrictions that homes across california are so that they can't have any brush or trees within 100% feet of the oil but that being said, firefighters said it quickly threatened 50 to 60 homes prompting mandatory evacuations and at one point, jumped the 101 freeway, a major artery that runs north an south in california forcing authorities to shut down the 101 for about 13 miles.

>> as soon as it's safely possible, we should get them out. >> reporter: a lot of salt right now. helping battling this fire from the air. 1200 acres have burned. it's about 12% contained. the cause is still under investigation at this point but the good news is that there are new injuries. they were not so fortunate in big bear california on christmas where a fire killed a mother and her three children. witnesses say that the father made it outside. got a hose, tried to spray down the home. one witness, uma, saying that was like watching a water gun on a volcano. >> wow. unbelievable. will carr, thank you very much for the update. more on the wildfire threat and the path of severe storms. joining us now, senior meteorologist janice dean live with an update.

janice? >>. >> high wind warnings with the wildfire burning with 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts into the overnight and into tomorrow. the winds will subside on sunday but for now, we deal with very gusty winds and fiefrld danger through the rest of today and again, subsiding on sunday. let's take our focus to the central u.s. where we have tornado watches again today for parts of texas and oklahoma and within that tornado watch, several tornado warnings south of the dallas area, north and east of waco and then up towards oklahoma. we have a tornado warning now south and east of oklahoma city. so strong rotation indicated on doppler radar here. we're looking for the potential throughout the rest of the afternoon into the overnight and then tomorrow for more severe weather. people are urged to stay on alert if you live across the southern central plains. parts of texas, oklahoma, and then across the mississippi

river rally. the threat for severe storms behind that. cold air and blizzard conditions that are starting to crank up tonight, overnight, into tomorrow and monday. future radar showing a lot of heavy rain here. we're going to see a mixture of freezing rain and or sleet and behind that, inches of snow. 18 to 24 inches of snow for parts of new mexico to texas and oklahoma. it could be a historic storm for them as it continues to move north and eastward and deal with a wintry mix for parts of the northeast. this storm is going to be long lasting and millions of people will be affected. forecast precipitation, 8 inches plus of wintry conditions and parts of kansas and colorado with blizzard watches in effect and surrounding that, winter weather advisories and you can see the very cold air behind

this system. we're going to be dealing with windchills in the single digits and below zero temperatures and then in front of it, look at these temperatures. this is like a springtime storm. very warm, unstable air ahead of this. 70s and 80s ahead of it and that's why we have the potential for severe weather, uma, tonight, again the threat for tornadoes and blizzard conditions. people are urged to stay off the roadways and of course, this is one of the biggest travel weekends of the year. please, please be careful. don't be out on the roads if they've told you you can't be. back to you. >> sound advice, one holiday weekend we'll not soon forget. thank you very much. >> you've got it. overseas now and some encouraging news. iraqi forces are closing in now controlled by isis and some of those soldiers are confronting setbacks there with land mines, slowing the progress into the city with 60 miles west of baghdad and recapturing romadi.

the last remaining district in iraq held by the terror group. garrett kenny with the latest. >> reporter: those air strikes that helped clear the way for iraqi forces that are slowly gaining ground. iraq's military said this week, its forces with the backing of u.s. coalition air strikes have retaken much of the city and are now closing in on the last area that is still under isis control. where about 100 islamic state fighters hold out on a former government compound. and destroying several isis vehicles, fighting positions and several houses that the militants rigged with explosives. those kind of bombs and booby traps slowed the forces. ro ra

ramadi, the u.s. forces spent a lot of time equipping. before taking off, president obama said the u.s. continues to increase its support in the fight against isis. >> isil has already lost 40% of the populated areas it's lost in iraq and in syria. as we keep up the pressure, our air campaign will hit isil harder than ever, taking out their leaders, their commanders, and their forces. we're stepping up our support for partners on the ground as they push isil back. >> iraq's prime minister vowed once ramadi is taken, they will focus to mosul, second biggest in the de facto capital in the country. in washington, i'm garrett tinny, fox news. >> much more on the battle from author judith miller later on in our show. and with the fighting raging against iraq and syria, more

americans are becoming concerns about attacks on the home front. according to latest fox news poll, 27% of the voters say that terrorism is the most important issue facing the country. but notice that worries about the economy are also high. so as we get set for the new year, wages, jobs, and unemployment dominate the political landscape. joining us with hints on where we may be heading in 2016, ronald reagan, art lafe rerk fl. time for change in terms of changes. many would like to see the spike and it's happening across the country but we know more than a dozen states, it's going up but necessarily a sign to see more of this and how do you see it play out with democratic and republican nominees? >> i really don't see much difference in 2016, uma, to be honest. there are no major changes in policies coming as long as obama is president. the republicans have the house

and the senate. they have the state houses. the governorships. all sorts of things but missing the presidency and if we get a republican president, which i think we will, you'll see the first changes in 2017 and 2018. and then you'llen find huge changes in economics but as it is now, the fed won't change its construction. it will be all a bunch of professors trying to tell you what interest rates should be an no changes in tax codes, critical to economic growth and no major changes in government either but frankly, not many changes in 2016. just very sluggish growth but boy, getting closer to 2017 and 2018 where you'll see spectacular economic growth. >> we're talking about a sluggish economy but oil prices low and continue to stay low. do we need to hear more about drilling here at home regard

less of the prices at home? >> if you find drilling worthwhile and profitable, then drill. if you find it not profitable, don't drill. no reason to separate out from any other product in the united states. we are close to self-reliant in energy and all is very good news for oil but i don't think oil should be separate. whenever government sticks hands and nose, they almost always ruin it. just look at solyndra and some of the others if you don't believe me. >> who the voters are favoring right now and you can see, trump right now has 52% a handle on

the economy. and then cruz second but distance with 13%. who among the gop contenders you believe is aufrg up an economic plan to stimulate job growth and construction. >> i know both candidates fairly well. i spent time with both of them and a lot of time with cruz and both have excellent policy for economic growth. business snet sales and personal adjusted gross income and some credits and deductions that i really wish he didn't have and would lead to economic growth but so would donald trump's and huckabee. if you look at the republican candidates, they have great economic policies and every one wants to lower the tax rates, broaden the tax base and minimal regulations, government spending

restraint. all of them are real moving in the right direction to create that prosperity that we've so desperately lost oth ll lly los 15 years. it's tragic artragic. >> young people who believe that message is something they want to hear from folks like bernie sanders and hillary clinton. is there a reality check here? is it true they can't afterto gi afford to give it away for free? >> they scrape away and once they get the first job, they'll ask this question. who's this fica guy taking my money and college campuses aren't the right place to get a good reality check. you need to look at the economy. i don't mean to say this against sanders, hillary or o'malley but their day is gone. they're not going to win with

these type of nonsense l policipolic. when you get something for free, it's the most expensive thing you've ever seen. we can't afford free education and free everything. there's no tax base to fund that type of stuff. so the republicans understand that. they're operating on that initiative. and frankly, i think they're doing a great job of getting that point across and i think democrats are toast when it comes to the 2016 election. i think the republicans will take a vast majority of the dell gr gats. >> another poll i want to put up there to consider. this is how people feel the year ending on a good note. 56% people it is. and 32% of the population believes the year sending on a bad note with a mixed reaction of 12%. with 56%, i know you're an optimist anyway, in terms of

feeling more favorable once the election is over? >> it will go way up once the election is over and who believe the future will be far better than the past. whenever you see 56% of the people saying, this year's better than last year, that's a very low number, uma. i mean, people should be progressing every single year. every year should be better than the last year. every generation should be more than the last generation but that's not the way people have been seeing it. and you know, we've had this long stagnant period that is the w/obama recession and never recovered and then once we start the recovery, it's like 1982, 1984, 1986, you won't believe the optimism to sweep america and the asset values and the real wages go up and employment increase. people who never held jobs before will find them, especially for the poor, the minorities, the disenfranchised,

discovery during the forensic analysis of the vehicle. saw the suspect pushing the u-haul in the parking structure. when they tried to speak to him, they say he ran and then turned and shot back. once officer hit in the arm and another officer hitting the suspect and the injured cop later released from the hospital and the suspect remains in stable condition. as new york's police commissioner after 9/11, ray kelly stood on the front lines. big issues confronting terrorism with race and policing. he helped transform the nypd into a premier. i had a chance to catch up with him recently to talk about his concerns for police officers and whether we need to see terror threats as an act of war.

do you believe we're actively at war? >> welg, i'm not certain what the semantics mean. we're fighting a fight overseas and fighting here in the u.s. and these people want to come here and kill us. we talk about al qaeda. we talk about isis. we talk about boko haram. a lot of these are just distinctions without a difference. it's important to remember this is radical islamists who want to come here and kill us. that's their mission in life. >> in the book though, you have chilling stories of 16 foiled terror plots against this city. >> yep. there were 16 plots and some of them were the result of great work on the part of the fbi. great work on the part of the nypd and sheer luck. for instance, fashul assad wasn't on anybody's radar screen or didn't know anything about him until he tried that blow

potential for fraud an abusd ab. >> we made positive strides. >> on a personal note in terms of what we saw over the last several months concerning police morale and the way police have been targets, a lot of anti-cop sentiments and the impact that that's had on departments across the country. >> police will always do their jobs in emergency situations. that's certainly my experience. but they've been under attack, no doubt about it. some of these videos we saw are terrible. no question about it. some of them are showing this reaction to the police.

it's the ferguson effect. i think police are hesitating from the initiatives in the past. it's somewhat understandable. not put their families and not put their jobs at risk and i think the cameras, the adoption of cameras is actually to go a long way in sort of memorializing what happens in the event instead of seeing half of a film on youtube, you can potentially see the whole event. and to think that time will heal some of this, but no question about it. fairly conservative attack on the police. >> what do you hope people come away with after reading the memoirs, so to speak, and talking about your experiences? >> i hope they come away with the need to be vigilant. to be on guard. i think we live in endangered times and i think we have to sort of have a 360 degree.

i like to come away with the story of certainly the bloomberg administration, the work that was done in the 12 years of michael bloomberg as mayor and we see crimes at record lows and murders at record lows and shootings by police officers to record lows and the last year of bloomberg administration, the police department had a 70% approval rating. >> that's fantastic. >> you don't find that too many other places. all in all, a good job was done during the bloomberg terms. >> the book is great. thank you very much. the best to you. merry christmas. and as this holiday weekend continues, security steps up after a warning after a possible paris style attack and a push to take back iraq's second largest city from the hands of isis and what a possible victory there

we're back with a check of headlines now. in birmingham, a tornado touched down on christmas day leaving a two square mile of destruction in the area and now that region is bracing for more major flooding after days after heavy rain. federal authorities suspect arson at a houston mosque causing severe damage. no one was injured and police in vienna austria with the possibility of an attack between christmas and the new year but

no concrete threat and no plans to cancel any holiday events. the fight is intense in ramadi. military leaders say the terrorist group is booby trapping everything in the city. suicide bombers and snipers are also slowing down the campaign. iraqi troops making a major push with the help of u.s.-led air strikes. a victory could have larger implications with a battle to recapture the much larger city of mosul. joining us with pulitzer prize winning contributor. judith miller.

how are you? >> good to see you. >> how do you gauge the possible victory at hand? >> do you see this as encouraging news? >> absolutely. look. a victory in iraqi by the security forces would be a tactical and strategic turning point but the real game changer will be mosul, the city in iraq and that's months away. ramadi is now a testing ground for the forces that the united states has trained. it's a testing ground of the new tactics and procedures that we've adopted and a testing ground for the iraqis to finally take back one of the major cities. i was in ramadi when the united states withdrew its forces from iraq and even then, the soldiers with whom i was embedded were very, very worried about what would happen when we left and in

fact, isis took over not long after that. >> symbolically, the victory would really be a huge shot in the arm. but at the same time, we're also hearing those reports that for military leaders on the ground there saying that isis is booby trapping many of the sites within the city that's slowing things down at the moment. >> i think i have to expect this from isis. i mean, they clearly will use human beings who are civilians in the area as sheelz, they will try and do everything they can to hang on. even though they're grossly outnumbered by iraqi security forces. these are not the iraqi shiite mi militias. this is the new iraqi army that we have trained that's supposed

to minimize civilian casualties and that's why this is such a great test. account city be retaken without an extraordinary loss of civilian life? and once the iraqi forces have control of the area, will they treat the civilian/sunni population well? that's what this game is all about. taking the city back is just part of the struggle. the main challenge is to make sure the iraqis in ramadi make sure they're part of a new iraqi. >> the white house has been criticized. but now we're seeing a steady push for ramadi. talk about the timing of this and the political implications of why this is happening now. >> the military officials with whom i speak, the americans, say there is no doubt that progress could have been fast er but wit

president obama committed to an extraction mode that's getting us out of the middle east rather than more forces in, the american ability -- america's ability to bolster the iraqi forces have been limited. i think progress would have been faster had our commitment been stronger, but it is what it is and it's beginning really six months. and 16% of the territory it took. so the tide is turning. the momentum is beginning to go in the direction of the united states and its coalition but the major threats really lie ahead. >> they do indeed. but do you see a shift with this president given the heavy criticism against the administration for not listening to his military leaders and that maybe we see more of this in the

new year as we move ahead? >> you know, this is really a president who's very committed to the strategy that he has adopted. he to maintain that isis is contained and that the united states and its coalition allies are winning, whereas we've seen isis dig deep roots in nine different countries. we've seen the battle to reclaim territory that's taken by them. all the more difficult because the united states is really only making the very minimal effort. if we had been willing to act faster and more assertively, i believe according to the military sources i talk to that progress on the ground would have been much, much faster. but a lot depends on what the government of iraq is willing to do. if the prime minister of the country really willing to make 20% of the country sunni iraqi

crazy. we cannot placate them. america does not have the stomach for a long war. is that still true. and let's pay the money. we don't have the money. plus, what's the rest of the world going to say? so jefferson was not known as a war hog. he fought in the revolutionary war and didn't do it. said we've got to stand up. when jefferson gets the job, he knows he's not making the payments and he takes them on. he does. four years. congress is against them for a while. the people are saying why do we want the war against these barbarians but it was jefferson that stuck to it, adjusted his war plan and with the victory. >> truly remarkable. the patriotism and the fact that the story i love, of course, the one where they actually march from egypt into the port of dirn with mercenaries used to help them along the way. incredible effort. 500 miles.
