year and now this new year. here is our weekly segment about everything that worries us. one viewer writes i enjoy our daily hour of jogging but i worry about how it is affecting my knee cartilage.preventive measures i can take? >> it is taking a toll on their knees. >> prevailing wisdom on that was the point you just made, that it is going to wear out your knees. but studies don't actually back that up. what is knee cartilage? there is two big bones there, the femur and tib la, and the tibia and the cartilage is the cushion in between. common knowledge would be you're wearing it out from running. there is some studies that have shown that running may build up the cartilage in your knees which protects you more by causing more protein to be made. that helps the cartilage. but, i want to throw a caveat in here, we're not talk ing about people who are overweight, we're not talking about people who are sprinters, we're talking about gentle jogging, long distance running and i want to add on soft surfaces.

what's going on. your weight translates to four times the pressure on your cartilage. so losing weight first. and you can do nonweight bearing exercises, swimming, biking, other things that doesn't put pressure. you lose the weight and start jogging. >> do those injections work on the knee? >> they can. but they're only something to be used temporarily. they're work on things like rich plasma and stem cell, that's currently being developed. by the way, the shoe s david mentioned really important. i want to also say arthel has perfect posture. let not anybody doubt. >> what about glucosamine? people take glucosamine. >> works for some people, not for others. it started off in dogs, actually, studied, works for some people. if it works for you, use it. it is controversial, but -- >> supplements you can take -- >> and chondroitin too. >> i think it is 1500 milligram a day. talk to your doctor about glucosamine, that sometimes helps. >> we have to talk about this

if you're into skiing at high mountains, wear your sunscreen. even though you don't see the sun, you can get skin cancer. >> great point. in the wintertime, i don't think of wearing sunscreen, ever. >> we should wear sunscreen in the winter, especially at high altitudes, even on cloudy days because you're getting enough sun rays to cause skin cancer, even in the winter. 95% of all skin cancer is caused by the sun. we have an increase of melanoma going on. you may travel to a high area, go out to the rockies, you may forget about this, you're closer to the sun. wear your sunscreen at all times, even in the winter. >> if you still have a problem, you can get a humidifier at home. that also helps. dry skin is always a problem. so those are good recipes. >> moisturizer and sunscreen. >> and lip balm? i never think of that. >> that's also good. >> and you can get sunburn here as well. >> we just had a 70 degree temperature. you don't have to worry about it. >> wear the sunscreen. >> happy new year, everybody.
