man by shooting him in the back. >> that video should change the course of what's going on. >> prosecutors charged the cop with murder. major crashes made national news in 2015. in sti oklahoma, investigators say a woman intentionally drove her car into a crowd at the oklahoma state university homecoming parade. four spectators died. amtrak engineer was reportedly speeding at more than twice the limit when his train derailed in philadelphia. >> and then it was the moment like it stopped and i knew i was alive at least. >> 8 people died in the wreck. and a black hawk helicopter was carrying seven marines and four soldiers when it crashed off florida's gulf coast. >> at this point, we are not hopeful for survivors. >> where did it come from? >> some unusual objects in the sky captured our attention. an unmanned surveillance blimp broke loose in

democrats and three republicans had quit the race. trump hit the campaign trail for the first time. >> good evening. isn't he the best? he will be the best president ever. >> well, donald trump wrapped up the year with a new controversy. evidence called for a temporary ban on foreign muslims coming into the united states after the attack in san bernardino. it went over big at his rallies. >> donald j. trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. >> trump insisted the ban was not about religion but security. most of his republican rivals said they did not support the idea. but they also did not rule out supporting trump, if he becomes the nominee. >> i don't believe it's cop

constitutional to have a religious test on who we allow into the country. >> i don't think it's the right approach. i like and respect donald trump. i don't anticipate that changing at all. >> well, 60% of americans say they oppose banning muslims, according to a "the washington post." abc news poll. but among republicans, the reverse. almost two thirds say they support the idea. the survey taken just days after donald trump called for the ban. we also saw some drama on capitol hill in 2015. the house speaker, john boehner quit his job. and he sounded pretty happy about it. >> >> his last day. and in the middle of the meeting to nominate the replacement, the front runner dropped out. >> i think i shocked some of you, huh? >> he did, indeed. the house majority leader kevin mccarthy said the party needed a fresh face. he also admitted his party about benghazi committee and

hillary clinton's poll numbers, quote, wasn't helpful. republican leaders asked congressman paul ryan to run. he made it clear he did not want the job. but he finally gave in after republicans agreed demands including weekends at home with his family. >> it is my privilege to hand this gavel to the speaker of the house congressman and honorable paul ryan. [cheers and applause] >> thank you very much. >> speaker ryan said the house is broken and he vowed to wipe the slate clean. he also called for republicans and democrats to pray for each other. >> 00 15 saw the first real hover board in action. but don't pull out your wallets just yet. this year's biggest breakthroughs in science up next. ♪ ♪

we visited our planetary neighbors in 2015 and some inventions pushed the bounds of technology. in our slide show now a look back at the year in science. we learned from, among a lot of things, we learned that the red planet might not be a dead planet. nasa scientists announced they found evidence of liquid water currently flowing on the surface of mars. in fact, it says it formed with these dark sections right here. this is how they know the brownish streaks you can see in the photo, liquid water. further away -- farther away frometh we got our closest look yet at the icy world that is pluto. scientists sent images from the new horizon space craft proved that the dwarf planet's surface is more complex than expected. here, well, that's the first super moon in decades. that's a rare combination of a full moon and a lunar eclipse. and here it is next to the washington monument. this was a gem.

a look at the solar impulse. pilots this year began an attempt to make historic flight around the globe without one drop of fuel. this is the solar powered plane over abu dab bay. inventions like hover board that lexus made. it's called slide. it's a real hover board and sadly it's not for sale. lots of people of course bought one of the most prized and tech products of the year the apple watch, in essence a smart phone you wear on your wrist. in 2015 we said goodbye to some enormous influences. folks who helped shape politics, pop culture, and the world. >> ♪ to be with you ♪ ♪ ♪

i'm patricia stark now back to you with shepard smith. over the past year events our country influenced many of the decisions made inside it a look now at some of the biggest international stories of 2015. a year which saw the islamic state expand its influence

beyond iraq and syria. launching deadly attacks around the world. suicide bombs exploded outside a soccer stadium. while gunmen rampaged through restaurants and a concert hall, a coordinated attack on paris that killed more than 120 people. >> there were too many dead people. too many blood. it's t. was a carnage. [gunfire] >> it was all too familiar. after a set is of attacks there earlier in the year, when two gunmen went on a shooting rampage at the offices of a satirical newspaper. [gunfire] and an islamic state supporter killed hostages inside a supermarket. the group also claimed it was behind the explosion of a russian jet in egypt. saying a bomb made out of a soda can can what killed all 224 people on board. the extremist group also claimed responsibility for a man who gunned down dozens

at a beach resort in to your tunisia, another guy with suspected ties boss. three americans helped stop an attack when they took down an isis linked gunman on a train from amsterdam to paris. >> it's these guys of young people who make me extraordinarily optimistic and hopeful about our future. >> there was a sense the conflict might be at a turning point when anger boiled over in amman over a pilot's videotaped execution. >> the reaction here in jordan swift and loud, there must be retaliation. (explosion] >> the battle hit setbacks on multiple fronts. iraqi forces abandoned their weapons at one point, allowing extremists to raise their flags nver ramadi. and in syria. the u.s. acknowledged its half a billion-dollar program to train moderate

rebels had failed. >> the ones that are in the fight is -- we're talking four or five. >> u.s. led air strikes apparently took out the man who beheaded hostages in propaganda videos. >> we are reasonably certain that we killed the target that we intended to kill, which is jihadi john. >> the situation grew more complicated as russia started of dropping bombings. president vladimir putin started air strikes with bashar al sad. >> their basic theory of how to solve syria has not worked and will not work russia claimed to target fighters. many of their air strikes hit u.s. backed rebels when turkey shot down a fighter jet putin called it a stab in the back. at the same time, american troops assumed more risks.

a soldier died to free hostages in iraq. and the white house announced there would be boots on the ground in syria. >> this is a mission to support the efforts of moderate opposition fighters on the ground as they take the fight to isil in their own country. >> as battles rage on. >> tens of thousands are risking everything to escape terrorists and torture on unimagable scale. >> refugees lock, difficult journals. many never made it including some 8 will hundred who died when a migrant boat capsized in the medicine mediterranean. we got confirmation omar was gone. >> the man who led bloody fight in america's longest war is dead. >> despite that, taliban militants fired guns in the air as they seized the

northern city. the first major urban area they controlled since 2001 afghan troops rolled back in with support of u.s. led air strikes. there was a problem. >> a hospital was mistakenly struck. >> the u.s. had to apologize after targeting a doctors without borders facility. >> all the indication points to it a great breach of humanitarian law and therefore war crime. >> as challenges mounted, the president announced he was reversing plans to withdraw u.s. troops by the end of the year. >> i do not send is you into harm's way lightly. >> meantime the u.s. ambassador to south korea found himself in harm's way after a political protester stabbed him in public. >> i'm bleeding here. i'm bleeding here. >> and a blood bath unfolded on a college campus in kenya. >> families mourned in al shabaab militants killed more than 140 people in a

coordinated assault. in other international headlines some major plane crashes captured our attention. >> mass murder by jet. >> a german airliner slammed into the french alps with the voice and data recorders showing it was no accident. >> terrified passengers screamed as the co-pilot set a course for the mountain. as the pilot tried to break down the cockpit door. >> passenger recorded a flight plunging into the river. we also witnessed terrible disasters on the ground. >> an earthquake in nepal brought down buildings killing 9,000 people. and crews in saudi arabia recovered more than 2,000 bodies after a stampede during the annual hajj pilgrimage. it was a financial disaster that sparked protests in greece. leaders there accepted tough terms of a new bailout deal. after the banks shut down

when the government defaulted on its debt. and as the greeks tried to dig out of a hole. a mexican drug lord slipped into one. >> we are getting our first look at what happened inside he el chapo's prison cell. >> escaping captivity through a mile long tunnel. there was dancing in the streets in liberia as the ebola epidemic ended. and there was violence in the streets of the middle east. as a new round of tensions flared between israelis and palestinians, one of many conflicts still unresolved as we head into 2016. and, yet. >> how are you? -- we have also seen rivals reconnecting. >> this is the good deal that we have sought. >> the u.s. and other countries struck a nuclear agreement with iran. urking israelis in the process. >> what a stunning, historic mistake. >> iran remains on america's list of state sponsors of terror. but one country came off the

list in 2015. >> this is what change looks like. >> the u.s. restored diplomatic relations with cuba. [drum roll] >> raising the stars and stripes over havana for the first time in 54 years. >> well, despite tensions around the globe, holiday hollywood gave us plenty of reasons to smile. come up the star brush of death in one of the biggest come backs of 2015.

2015 had celebrity break-ups. come bags and a fall from grace of one of holiday's biggest stars. bill cosby is counter suing some of the many women who accused him of sex crimes. >> he had me inappropriate i can't tellly touch him. he raped me in the brown stone apartments. that time was the most vivid i can remember. he was bill cosby. he was dr. huxtable at the time. nobody was believing that. >> dozens of women accuse bill cosby of drugging them and raping him during the peak of his fame. >> i want from one of the accused. >> apology will be enough. >> apology will be enough.
