thanks for being with us. we'll see you back here our religion time. -- regular time. we'll see you then. >> breaking tonight, the top republican contenders go head to head. with the knowledge there are two weeks to go before the first voters make their pick for the g.o.p. nominee in iowa. well come to a live 11:00 p.m. edition of the kelly file, everyone. the two-hour extravaganza had it all, policy debates and threats against the homeland. to pointed attacks against democratic front runner hillary clinton and president obama's legacy. and a couple epic exchanges between political bffs ted cruz

and donald trump whose friendship may never be the same. here are highlights. >> i'm glad, sir about what is going on in the world i'm watching story time with barack obama and it sounded like everything in the world was going amazing, you know? >> if we manage to damage ourselves and lose the next election and the progressives get in there and get 2 or 3 supreme court picks our nation, as we know it is over. >> we cannot make rash statements and expect the world to respond as though well, it's just politics. which is why i'm asking him to consider changing his views. >> since september, the constitution hasn't changed but the poll numbers have.

>> no. it's true. it's true. he never had a chance. now, he's doing better, he's got probably a 4% or 5% chance. >> we're going to win every state. bernie sanders is the nominee. >> hillary clinton is disqualified from being commander in chief of the united states. someone who lies to the families of those four victims if benghazi can never be president of the united states. >> we have a jam packed show complete with charles krauthammer, plus, chris stierwalt and howard kurtz. and we again tonight with marc theissan. >> it was a very impressive debate. you had three categories of people, donald trump, ted cruz, and everybody else competing to

be the guy who is the antitrump. and i think the two front runners did well. both of them, they, i think we can probably discount a trump-cruz ticket after tonight. but neither of them really -- they both offered to put each other on the ticket and apparently, if cruz isn't a natural born citizen, trump can move up. or i'm not sure how that worked out. >> do you think anyone won? did anyone win? >> well, i think the two front runners won in the sense they didn't lose. when you're ahead, there was a lot of battling and neither drew blood from the other. i think the most impressive moment for me of the debate was how donald trump handled the question about nikki haley. he's in south carolina, nikki haley's backyard.

she just acknowledged she was talking about him when talking about angry voices so instead of attacking her he owned what she said. he said you're darn right i'm angry. our country has been run by incompetent people. i'm angry. that was for someone not a politician, that was a really brilliant way. we're getting better as a politician. that is clear. >> he is learning how it works. >> he's growing it before office. >> there are terrible numbers with women. there is a question about whether it would help them to go after a popular one as nikki haley. she drew a plug for her state of the union response. >> talk about the next tier down. we saw a lot of swipes at marco rubio. rubio versus chris christie. kasich, not so much. there seemed to be a more-spirited jeb bush tonight

trying to make his mark. >> a little bit, yes. marco rubio is in third place in iowa, second in new hampshire, third in national polls. of the pack he's a leader of that pack from behind. and i think he had a good night tonight. i think he had some good moments, a great moment on national security, which he said i'm going to have the best intelligence community in the world tell me where the terrorists are and whoever is left we're going to sent them to guantanamo bay. >> we have that. >> we're going to win this war on isis. the most powerful intelligence agency in the world is going to tell us where they are. the most powerful military in the world is going to destroy them. if we capture them alive, they're getting a one way ticket to guantanamo bay, cuba. >> go ahead. >> that was a brilliant line. he had a number of moments like that that i thought were good. i think he made a mistake in getting into a dust up with chris christie. i think that was his low moment

of the evening. if you're in the leader of the pack you don't want to fight with the people below you on the totem pole because they're trying to pull you down. i think he would have done better not to get into a fight on the debate stage with chris christie. jeb bush came out strong with that great comment about hillary clinton, you know he raised the fact she's under investigation by the fbi and might be shuttling between the white house and court house. when he got into this opportunity for an exchange with trump on the muslim ban, he said i hope you reconsider. i hope you reconsider? i mean that is just so weak. and then, caputo said you was unhinged. yes. he's unhinged. >> it's like what are you? mean or nice? are you going to be a jerk or gentleman? >> this is a guy who has bill boards up saying trump is

unhinged and he wouldn't say it tonight. >> and an ad out that says he is a jerk, today. >> and cavuto asked if supporters are unhinged, too? >> his answer was basically no, because people are scared but not running to hold the oval office. got to leave it at that. marc, thank you. >> as marc just mentioned a lot of republicans are giving credit to donald trump for how he handled the night, including where trump said he's just fine of wearing the label of angry because in his eyes there is much to be angry about in the country today. joining me now, rich laurie, fox news contributor and roger stone, author of "the clintons war on women". do we have the moment cued up? we're going to get it in just a moment. let me start with you, rich as a guy who doesn't like donald trump.

how do you think he did? >> i think that bit saying i'm angry, that in a nut shell captures the mood of the republican electorate. i think trump lost the exchange with cruz over eligibility. but in the course of losing it, he was funny and entertaining and his answer, trump, on new york values was just awesome. i don't think any politician could have done that better than he did, and it shows his native skill. but i think the winner is ted cruz, he's elevating himself and becoming more and more plausible as a potential nominee. >> we're going to play some of the sound for you in just a moment. roger, you're a trump supporter. what did you think? >> donald trump is articulate but he's rarely eloquent. tonight his eloquence and the question of new york was extraordinary. and he owned ted cruz in that moment. i think the most significant

exchange of the debate. so i think he had a great night. yes. the country is angry. that issed mood of the electorate. the trump campaign is a citizen uprising and a populist conservative uprising. hopefully it will attract people who stopped voting. i thought he had a great night. as far as ted cruz is concerned he knows donald trump was born in the united states. the shot at donald's mother was really tricky. >> i don't understand cruz's point there. i wasn't following why donald trump -- >> mother was born in scotland. which is meaningless because donald is born on u.s. soil with a naturalized mother and u.s. citizen father. >> he's making a point that if you extend out these crazy theorys -- >> citizenship only relates to the person.

if you want to go back five generations probably none of us is an american citizen. >> that shows the difference between these two guys who were all called outsiders and at the moment are dominating the field. cruz, i'm sure gained out every possible mutation of that debate. and probably had a white board with his teamworking for 18 hours on the answer. and it showed. it was really good. donald trump just shows up and goes from the gut. >> go ahead, roger. >> unscripted, unhandled, uncoached. no one puts worlds in donald trump's mouth. i known him 37 years and consider him a friend. you want to talk about china? he would drop the corporate tax rate below china. he would crush china. >> on imposing terrorists costing americans money on their own goods in the long run. >> i agree but that is not the

entire trump plan. if you look at his tax plan, our corporate rate is 25. we're 35. the chinese, 25. his plan drops it to 15. the jobs sucked out of china back to the united states this, is trump's brilliance. he understands trade. >> let me ask you about, we didn't hear a lot from kasich and did he do anything to help them selves? >> i respect and like ben carson but on a lot of questions he just seemed out of his depth. john kasich, no one is paying attention to him, he's in this big tie for second place in new hampshire. that could potentially be significant. he gets the narrow cap to the center left of the party. in new hampshire without anyone bothering him. and bush, also in that tie, roughly speaking, for second in new hampshire, had some okay moments but i thought was flailing at times and lost an

exchange with donald trump for trump stepping all over him again. >> always flailing you. but the question, did he flail less? do you know? did he land from blows? maybe you get a couple in? maybe you do damage on the way down. you know? >> this is a flailing theory of politics. no one is ever -- >> he's not the most natural politician. i mean -- jeb cannot -- >> jeb cannot land a punch. ben carson given the soft ball of the evening. asked about bill clinton's sexual conduct and if it matters. this isn't about adults and marital infidelity. that hillary is an accessory after the fact in bill clinton's sex crimes, he's a party to the cover up and the american people have a right to look at that evidence. >> what is the name of your book

again? >> the clinton's war on women. >> he was not on the stage tonight, he was here, with us. >> what were the biggest moments of the night? frank luntz and his focus group are next. we've got the best ones dialled and the one that was fairly obvious and not obvious. and look who is here. dr. charles krauthammer with what he thought was the surprise of the night. plus, chris stierwalt and howie kurtz. >> i stood on the stage and watched marco look at governor bush and say someone told you that because we're running for the same office that criticizing me will get to you that office. it appears the same someone has been whispering in old marco's ear, too. constipated?

victims in benghazi cannot be president of the united states. >> it was a moment that came after that that is creating the biggest buzz. we turn to frank luntz and his focus group, hey, frank. >> we've got 26 south carolinans and they're clear about what happened tonight. normally, i do a show of hands. i'm going to do a countdown. 3, 2, 1. >> cruz. >> ted cruz, overwhelmingly. the reason why he did so well? we're going to get back to them in just a moment. i want to show you the challenge of donald trump, trump's response, and ted's response to that response. let's take a look. >> i would suggest we focus on who is best prepared to be commander in chief because that

is the most important question facing the country. >> there are other attorneys that feel and very, very fine constitutional attorneys that feel that because he was not born on the land, he cannot run for office. >> i spent my entire life defending the constitution before the u.s. supreme court and i'm not going to be taking legal advice from donald trump. >> you don't have to. >> who thought that ted cruz beat donald trump on that exchange? raise your hands? it is everybody. so tell me, why. >> he handled him. it was evident that he was capable of taking the hit and handling it. and turning donald around on himself. >> not only that, he was very eloquent and level headed about everything he had to say tonight. i like donald trump, donald trump is very opinionated which doesn't make it easy for him for the debate. >> the youngest person here, have you ever voted for a

president, before? >> no, sir. >> who won that exchange? >> i think ted cruz did from the opening statement. i think that he is willing to die for this country instead of staying on his knees. and i feel like donald trump isn't willing to do that. i think he's in it for personal gain. >> kim, what was so, either effective about what cruz said or where donald trump came up short on that exchange? >> he's so engaging. he just goes, goes, goes. quick, quick, quick, quick. i can't believe what he said. >> i want someone to defend donald trump. william, go ahead. >> donald trump is just making a point this is a weakness in the cruz campaign. whether it's fair or not, democrats don't play fair. he was just making that point to cruz. >> go ahead. >> i just don't -- he sounded honest. i like honesty in politics. it's hard to find.

>> he had honesty out of these politicians? >> no. but i love to hear something that sounds more honest than other things. >> there is another segment that ted cruz did particularly well. and it referred to what happened over the last 48, 72 hours and one of the highest dialled moments of the evening. let's take a look at ted cruz connecting with our republican voters. >> i give you my word. if i am elected president, no service man or woman will be forced to be on their knees and will feel the full force and fury of the united states of america. >> are you military? >> i still am, sir. >> then, thank you for your service. how did you feel when cruz said that about our men and women in uniform? >> it's very, very important we take care of our veterans.

>> are we? >> no. we're doing a horrible job. i've got friends, one in particular that died of lung cancer a couple years ago. and he went to the va up columbia. and they pretty much just let him die. >> do you think ted cruz is going to fight more than other republicans? >> i think he and donald trump are really kind of focused on veterans and veterans issues better than anyone else. >> i believe ted cruz demonstrate that had with obamacare. he is the only one that stood, and did, what he said he was going to do. but as far as this exchange here, that is probably the scariest thing i've ever seen is pictures of our soldiers on their knees. that is terrifying. >> do you agree with that? >> let's hope we don't have to see it again. when we come back, we're going to hear two other impressive clips from this debate. one is going to surprise you.

our south carolina voters really do follow politics. >> we're looking forward to hearing from them, frank, thank you very much. >> the luntz focus group thought ted cruz won the big moment with donald trump, charles krauthammer thought cruz ran into a big problem in a different back and forth. charles, and the moment, are next. >> i'll tell you what, donald, you kindly just a moment ago offered me the vp slot. i'll tell you what. if this all works out i'm happy to consider naming you as vp and if you happen to be right, you can get the top job at the end of the day. >> i think if it doesn't -- no. no. i like that. i'd consider it. i'll go back to building buildings if it doesn't work out. i have a feeling it's i sure had a lot on my mind when i got out of the hospital after a dvt blood clot.

with chris stierwalt, howie kurtz frank luntz and his focus group. we turn to one of our favorite analysts, charles krauthammer. listen to what happened when senator cruz asked what he meant when he started accusing donald trump of having quote, new york values. >> the values in new york city are socially liberal, pro abortion, pro gay marriage, focused around money and the media. not too many yearsing ayes, donald did a long interview and explained his views on a host of issues that were very, very different from the views he's describing now. and his explanation, he said look, i'm from new york. i guess i can frame it another way. not a lot of conservatives come out of manhattan. i'm just saying. >> new york is a great place. got great people, loving people,

wonderful people. when the world trade center came down, i saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than new york. you have two -- we rebuilt downtown manhattan and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loves new york and loves new yorkers. and very to tell you that was a very insulting statement. that ted made. >> charles krauthammer is a fox news contributor and the author of the book "things that matter". what a moment. >> and i think a telling moment was the final split screen. you saw cruz on the right, utterly speechless and beaten. that was a pretty rare event. i'm surprised the focus group was looking at the exchange between the two of them on the

birth issue. that was a win for cruz but i thought it was a minor one. this one, i thought was electric. >> i'm going to ask him about this one, next. but go ahead. >> two things that are surprising about that exchange. first of all, cruz, who is the best debater of the group had to know this was coming. he had to know it was coming because donald trump had said the same answer about september 11th in one of the television shows. so he knew it was coming and had no response. look. cruz had dropped this thing about new york in a semi tongue in cheek way as a wink, wink to people in iowa. >> there had been message testing in iowa which cruz did not, it was unclear when he came on the show who is pretty clear somebody connected to cruz is behind it. they tested that message and it must have tested well because

the next thing we knew, ted cruz was saying it. >> it might have tested well in iowa but not in a national debate. it's not just that cruz walked into a trap knowing what is coming but that trump acted in a way that is quite uncharacteristic. if you notice how he drops the tone of his voice, it was serious and he slowed down. and he delivered that in a way that was sober and serious, unlike the way he generally speaks which is quickly, and half sentences, jumping around and with a lot of energy and i think he played that. that was the september 11th card. he dealt it out of the deck in a way that was surprising for trump. i thought that was the moment of the debate. if you score the debate on who this this round on points, it would be different. but i think that was a moment where trump clearly had won.

cruz, the main challenger had lost. that alters the cal cue -- calculations of the evening. >> if he finished with we saw hundreds of firefighters run into burning buildings to save others here in new york city, those are our new york values, those guys had new york values, it would have been the end. >> but that is asking a lot of trump. the fact that he was slow, serious, how sincere he was i'll leave to others to judge. but i thought it was extremely effective and the fact that cruz had no answer was shockingt thi hold that thought this, is on twitter now from mia farrow. you're showing the firefighters on september 11th raising the american flag. i get it, cruz is trying to

appeal to iowa. iowa is the first state to vote in the caucuses but the whole country, they love the new york firefighters and love the new york police. they love what those guys did on september 11th and sacrifice they made so you've got to be careful. >> that was a move by trump that was rather surprising. i would have said the other winner would have been, as usual, rubio. but that one moment i thought detracted a lot. but rubio, as always had a combination of articulateness and passion. it's there all the time. it's a kind of thing, i mean it's a version of the anger that trump was, is forgive me, trumpeting and saying this is why i'm angry. because the country is being

misrun. but the anger in rubio is a sense that we could be doing this, we aren't. and we can do it if we realize the values that we have and see the world clearly. he's done that in every debate, and i don't think he stumbled once on this. >> who is your next favorite? points on the board? anyone you're ready to write off? >> well, there are a lot of nonfactors. kasich keeps the roof returning and recurring in an election where everybody understands that experience isn't only irrelevant, it's negative. but jeb, i thought had his best night. he can never complete his attacks. but he has the courage to take on trump on the muslim immigration issue in a direct way.

everybody else had a version of how to restrict immigration, nobody took on trump directly. bush did, which i give credit for. the problem is that he has a instinct for the capillary. right when you think he's about to land the punch, he just can't do it. so on his own scale, i thought it was his best night. it wasn't enough. it's not going to make a difference. >> he was better in his ad today. >> exactly. >> charles, great to see you, thank you. >> my pleasure. >> a fox business debate moment getting tons of attention online tonight. candidates taking stage about who was the most liberal republican there. then, frank luntz is back with his focus group on what frank calls the surprise of the night and what voters thought when the topic turned to president obama and hillary clinton. >> if she gets elected she's under investigation with the fbi right now. her first 100 days instead of setting an agenda, she might be

donald trump and ted cruz were already the candidates most people were looking to for fire works tonight after days of trump questioning his citizenship, suggesting he wasn't born in the u.s., cruz hit back, hard. trump wasn't having it. here are new clips from the fight that dominated tonight's debate. >> back in september, my friend donald said he'd had his lawyers look at this from every which way. there was no issue there. nothing to this issue. now, since september, the constitution hasn't changed.

but the poll numbers have. >> i already know democrats are going to be bringing a suit. you have a big lawsuit over your head while running. if you become nominee, who the hell knows if you can serve the office? so you ought to let the courts decide. >> why are you saying this now? why are you raising this issue now? >> because now, he's doing a little bit better. no. no. it's true. >> i spent my life defending the constitution before the u.s. supreme court and i'll tell you i'm not going to be taking legal advice from donald trump. >> you don't have to. >> and you very kindly just a moment ago offered me the vp slot. i'll tell you what. if this all works out i'm happy to consider naming you as vp and if you happen to be right, you can get the top job at the end of the day.

>> joining me now chris stierwalt, great to see you. stierwalt, what did you think? >> you can't take anything away with what trump came back with later in the debate with a great answer about september 11th. he beat cruz in that one. the first and most anticipated exchange, cruz gets a clear win. and as a matter of fact, it wasn't just a clear win for cruz, the first time any candidate in the field, in any debate had ever done the full tango with donald trump and won. that is something remarkable. >> it was remarkable. and you know, cruz was prepared for it and ready to handle it. and we saw a more robust donald trump tonight. he seemed ready to rumble, howie. >> you know, this was donald trump's strongest debate by a lot as he would say. much more seasoned than in the early debates. so i don't think he was hurt tonight.

but very to agree in that exchange which everybody was waiting to see how cruz would fight back after a week of being tormented by the media, pushed by trump, how he'd handle it. he went toe to toe on the stage. this was a two man, top tier, toe to toe show. and cruz said he's the only republican able to owe do that with trump's mastery of format. >> on the question of the new york values, which trump, pretty much everybody agrees trump won that exchange, was it -- it must have been a calculation, right? on cruz's part? if it's going to cost me with new yorkers, i need to win in iowa and they're going to get this. am i wrong? >> i am loathe to give politicians that much credit for fore thought. i'm going to guess cruz knew he had a dilly of a pickle on his

hands because he knew donald trump had that september 11th answer. he explored it earlier. so cruz knew he had it. so if life gives you lemons, make lemonade. cruz did as well as he could, but boy, trump hit it out of the park in the response so it was not worth it. >> he was trying to go after this. in that tim russert clip, here is just a snippet about basically social issues. listen. >> how about gays serving in the military? >> it would not disturb me again, i'd want to talk to a lot of experts within the military, but is not something that would disturb me. hey, i lived in manhattan all my life, okay? my views are a little bit different than if i lived in iowa, perhaps. >> my views are different than if i lived in iowa. owe so trump said it. if cruz stuck with views he

might have done much better, howie. >> putting aside the fact i'm a new yorker, some reporters were shown that 199 interview before this debate. scripted by ted cruz. but the reason i don't think he passes much punch is that we know in the 90s he supported democrats and identified with issues like pro-choice on abortion. it doesn't seem to have hurt him. he changed his position on that. >> let me switch gears and ask you about other candidates on the stage. there were some. and whether you think any had an impact tonight chris? did rubio or anyone else? >> so rubio's top three, rubio continued to be the candidate other than cruz and trump that was in the discussion. and i think if you're doing it in order, you give it to cruz,

then, you have trump and rubio and the rest of the guys, right? they have to go through like a grieving process. they have to go through this whole thing to get to acceptance, and it hurts, and everything. >> and denial. bargaining. >> then, you're not going to be president and that is stinky. >> well, i thought rubio and chris christie mixed it up well. rubio is a solid and effective debater. in this one, i thought he was overshadowed by the ted and trump show that nobody is going to be talking about him tomorrow and the next week, those clips are going to be resounding through the media echo chamber. it's a two-man race going in and as we stand here. >> good to see you both. >> at tonight's debate, the candidates took on another opponent not featured on stage. president obama. he's not actually running, when he came to the current commander in chief, the republicans have

attractive to you? >> he said something i think people are failing to understand. that the second amendment is not, it's not a debate. it's a constitutional right. and to point that out and make that clear is a very strong point for me. >> i like his youthful exuberance. >> he stayed on point. i liked that. he didn't veer off. i didn't like it when they started going at each other. >> one more. >> i just felt he was speaking from his heart. i felt like he was, he believed what he was saying and cruz had the definition but at this point, rubio had the passion. >> there is another moment, also. megyn you talk about passion, you have to talk about governor

chris christie and he hit this group perfectly when talking about his frustration with barack obama. let's take a look. >> after seven years of your policies we have the biggest majority we have had since 1920s in the house. a republican majority in the senate and 31 out of 50 republican governors. the american people have rejected your agenda and now you're trying to go around it. that is not right. it's not constitutional. and we're going to kick your rear end out of the white house come this fall. >> you're laughing. you're still laughing. why? was that too much? >> not at all. >> do you think that was too much? >> no. >> you liked him using that language? >> i thought he was on point. yes. >> passion. >> yes. >> passion. >> we want someone that is tough, will go in there and knock somebody's lights out. >> knock someone's lights out. >> well, not that. >> well, he has that. he's very strong.

>> so megyn you have a question for our focus group participants. they can hear you. >> thank you for doing this. my question is what you thought of the trump, cruz, new york values back and forth and whether it moved you on the candidates? >> it didn't move me on the candidates, but here was trump defending new york. defending september 11th and it's a very sad time in american history. but he doesn't need to take it so personally. every single attack he takes personally and he does not need to do that. especially as president of this united states. >> very true. i thought cruz maybe took it too far. with the new york talk. >> i think either way, this is an opinion by ted cruz and an opinion by donald trump. it's not a substitute, but i don't think it means anything. >> when he uses the phrase new york values. >> i'm a recovering yankee.
