9:00 pm
and bath rin. i love you america. me to "ameri election headquarters." i'm shannon bream in washington. the 2016 democrats hope to follow president obama into the white house, it is crunch time. two weeks from today before voting officially begins in iowa. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley squared off in front of lester holt and andrea mitchell. this their final debate before the all important iowa caucuses. it got very heated. here are some of the highlights beginning with the tough words back and forth on guns. >> he has voted with the nra, with the gun lobby numerous times. he voted against the brady bill five times. he voted for what we call the
9:01 pm
charleston loophole. he voted for immunity from gun makers and sellers, which the nra said was the most important piece of gun legislation in 20 years. >> i think secretary clinton knows what she says is very disinagain wous. i have a d minus voting record from the nra. >> i listened to them go back and forth on which has the most inconsistent record on gun safety legislation, and -- i would have to agree with both of them. they both have been inconsistent when it comes to this. >> secretary clinton didn't answer your question. bernie sanders fought for universal health care for my entire life. he wants to end medicare and the medicaid and the children's health insurance program. that's nonsense. >> i have to say i'm not sure whether we're talking about the plan you just introduced
9:02 pm
tonight, or we're talking about the plan you introduced nine times in the congress. tear it up and start over again! pushing our country back into that kind of a contentious debate, i think, is the wrong direction. >> we're going to go forward. we're not going to tear up the affordable care act. i helped write it. >> i think instead of attacking one another on health care, we should be talking about the things that are actually working. >> you call yourself a democratic socialist -- >> i don't get personal speaking fees from goldman sachs. >> i'm only candidate standing here who said i will not raise taxes on the middle class. i want to raise incomes not taxes. >> yes, some middle class families would be paying slightly more in taxes, but the result would be that middle class family would be saving some $5,000 in health care costs. a little bit more in taxes, do
9:03 pm
away with private health insurance premiums. it's a pretty good deal. >> our coverage begins in charleston where ed henry is live. he's been keeping score. what is your take tonight? more fights in the debate than what was seen previously. >> that's right. the first three debates a lot of hype. it turned to be fizzle instead of sizzle. tonight there were blows that were being exchanged. my take from being here is that bernie sanders was dominating the agenda. his best performance so far. he was energetic and strong and tough and pushing back. sometimes he might come across as too strong or angry. he's trying to tap into what donald trump is tapping into in the republican debates. you saw sanders, so remember some of the earlier debates took the e-mail server off the table, back pedals. tonight he went after her and what i saw secretary clinton doing is wrapping her arms around president obama. that can help her in the democratic primary as she's now playing a lot of defense. rally the party around her,
9:04 pm
perhaps. particularly african-american voters. this debate, let's not forget, was cosponsored by the congressional black caucus. in south carolina large african-american turn out will be pivotal in the democratic primary coming up. my point is this a clinton camp on defense tonight. they are prepared for the possibility of losing either or both iowa and new hampshire. as bernie sanders had the recent surge, so she was looking to wrap herself around the president to have a southern fire wall in south carolina and other states with a frong african-american turn out. >> yeah. and very big news right before the debate, because there's a lot of back and forth about health care where bernie sanders stands on this. sanders introduced his plan shortly before the debate, and it led to the questions about how he's going to raise money for this. he said he wasn't going to tax. hillary said now you're going to tax. the money doesn't grow on trees. that was one major issue of contention tonight. >> absolutely.
9:05 pm
this is where bernie sanders is vulnerable. he's had the rise in the surge i was talking about in the polls and his fundraising. the energy we're seeing on the left for him in the democratic primary. where he's vulnerable once he lays out the details, the devil being in the details. the socialists and democratic plans how is he going to pay for health care? moments before the debate he wants a 2.2% health care premium you pay based on your income taxes and 6.2% payroll tax your employer would pay for that. also, he wants to expand the estate tax to pay for the health care plan. if you make between $250 and $500,000 it increases and if you make over $10 million your income tax would be 52%. it's not going to affect a lot of people, but it's going to have a dramatic economic impact. bernie sanders has been rising as he talks about giving out free health care and free
9:06 pm
college education. once the details are picked apart, it might be something as we close into iowa just two weeks away now that she can hit him hard on. >> yeah. we were a good ways into the debate before we got to what voters say right now is their top issue, which is national security and terrorism. >> yes, and google had been -- before the debate, during the debate tracking one of the top topics. they said number three was isis. it took about an hour and a half to get there. maybe it was because of the moderators. none of the democratic candidates earlier on any other topic decided to pivot to national security even though the voters were saying it's one of the top three issues out there if not the top issue after bernardino. i think, also, as they dug in on iran, on russia, syria policy. hillary clinton, you know, had a lot of explaining to do as a former secretary of state. that could be a key vulnerability for her moving forward. the other point i make, finally,
9:07 pm
i spoke to google officials what was being searched during the debate. the biggest search going on all around the country was bernie sanders. perhaps voters were seeing him have a strong debate performance trying to learn more about him. >> all right. well, they seem to be at least getting some traction with those undecided in iowa where he's polling very well against hillary clinton. we'll see within a matter of days. ed henry, thank you so much. >> great to see you, shannon. they covered plenty of ground. did they convince any undecided voters? we have a panel to talk about their chances as well as the jabs and one liners from the debate. they've been watching it all. we start with fox news contributor the niece of dr. martin luther king whose birthday and life we honor this weekend. welcome to you all. >> thank you. >> dr. king, i want to start with you. what stood out do you? there was a lot of back and forth. more spice than we've seen before. what topic caught your attention? >> there were two points. the first thing, i thought it was really good that mrs.
9:08 pm
clinton or secretary clinton said i won't raise taxes. on the surface i found it good. and bernie sanders talking about his record and he did pretty good bringing that forth. then mr. o'malley said he's good at finding things that work. that all sounded pretty good. but much of that began to unrav unravel. i'm not going to raise taxes but how are you going to pay for the things you want to do? you haven't given us an idea or plan that shows us what you want to do. and bernie sanders' record you wonder if your record is so good, why are things so bad. then i thought about them hitting at the rich. the very rich. we want to change things for the rich. well, if you squeeze and penalize the rich, and, you know, give them so fines and taxes they have the ability to go overseas and take the profits. what are you going to do to
9:09 pm
encourage the wealthy want to reinvest in america and rebuild america. i was waiting to hear that. how can we bring america back? and i hope i don't sound like anybody else -- >> are you going to declare your candidacy? >> i almost did, i think. i don't know. i was very concerned. i was not convinced that they don't need to raise taxes and further penalize even the middle class who already suffered from obamacare. so you hear about 19 million people who have more health care but then you hear about 29 million that have none. i was listening to all of it. >> yeah. health care, guns, let's talk about all these things. kirsen, they talked about the economy and the context of what they would do about wall street. bernie sanders repeatedly making reference i didn't make money
9:10 pm
from speaking fees from goldman sachs and pointing out hillary clinton made over $600,000 in one year from goldman sachs. saying she would be easy on wall street and he would be tough on wall street. >> he's setting up a contrast he's a revolutionary candidate. >> he's somebody who would just blow up the system, essentially, is what he's saying. yes, he's definitely taking the gloves off with her in way he hasn't in the past. it's going for the jugular. an area the democratic voters care about a lot. it's interesting he's very different from trump, but he also -- he hits on the same kind of ideas where you have people who are so frustrated and so tired of this incremental change and see a system that is broken. that's another phrase he used throughout the debate. the system is broken. and i think it's sending a message i'm going to do something really different. she's playing a little bit of a one hand wrapping her arms
9:11 pm
around obama. i think, to attract african-american voters, but on the other hand trying to almost do a general election type of candidacy talking about i'm not going to raise taxes,ed to frank. we don't need to go to glass stegall. >> yeah. and on the issue of health care one of the questions. hillary clinton was trying to suggest that senator sanders would blow up the aca and health care. she said now we have a password universal health care. the republicans want to repeal how far we've come. she's saying i'll tweak the aca but not blow it up and start from zero. we have the issue of him releasing the plan shortly before the debate with what looked like tax increases for just about everybody. >> i thought on guns she hit him hard. on wall street he knocked her down. on health care they fought to a draw.
9:12 pm
with the medicare plan private insurance premiums. so if they paid a little more taxes it would be what he called a good deal. now at the same time she's been basically saying that he was going to dismantle the health care we have. that's not really true. tonight she pivoted away from policy to process. well, i just mean we can't go back to this contentious political fight when it took us so long. we need to tweak it and cut costs. she admitted what it was all along is criticism of him trying to start another health care battle on capitol hill. that's different than what she was saying five days ago. >> he kept saying i wrote it. i helped write it. there's no way i'm going to blow it up. on the issue of guns she said he's flip-flopped. he changed his position on whether or not he should go after gun manufacturers, whether he would support something like that. what legislation he would support. he said she's being
9:13 pm
disingenuous. he bragged about the d minus rating from the nra. >> he has vulnerability there. but he was clear tonight that he wanted to go after gun manufacturers as well as basically manufacturers of any kind anybody who works in a corporation. >> yeah. >> anybody with any dealings with corporations. bernie sanders will come after you. i was struck, in particular, by the first question, which was an open-ended question that lester holt lobbed to the three candidates. what are the top three priorities and none of them answered national security. i thought we can end the debate now and it tells us everything you need to know about the contrast. every republican candidate would not only have mentioned national security but probably mentioned several national security issues. i thought that was a striking contra contrast. >> in the next round we'll talk about a lot of foreign policy issues. they talked tonight about
9:14 pm
several issues related to race, the black lives matter movement. police mistreatment. bernie sanders saying anybody who dies in police custody there should be a justice department investigation. and police forces need to look like the communities they serve. >> they were playing straight to the african-american and minority base. that was very obvious to me. because in either party, each party needs a certain amount of african-american vote. george w. bush showed when he brought up the african-american community 13% it helped him. but that, actually, bothers me. especially on black lives matter, gun control, and those issues. the minimum wage, i always want to ask people. minimum wage goes up but what else? milk, gas, clothing, daycare. so every time you raise something without a ceiling or a cap, then people get so excited about it but not seeing what it really costs them in the end
9:15 pm
response i'm really -- it's very obvious to me that at the base they are pretty assume that the african-american voters can be bought and that's disturbing to me. >> there was a lengthy discussion on several of those topics. also, climate change. and there was definitely some punching at the gop saying on this stage we never have to believe in science. unlike the gop. bernie sanders said it's owned by the fossil fuel industry. it was clear this group thought that's a big issue their base cares about. >> it is. it's a softball for them. it's an easy one. they all agree on it, basically. let's just put it out there and move on. to go back to the black lives matter issue. i think to watch hillary clinton tonight was to watch her just overtly appeal to african-american voters. >> it's very clear she can't win -- she can't win the election without them. >> yeah.
9:16 pm
>> and she knows that. bernie sanders has more of an appeal to white voters. he doesn't do as well with black voters, at least this point. it's interesting in her closing statement she talked about flint, michigan and what is happening there. she pointed out saying this is happening because they're not white. doing a very overt appeal in that way and talking about black lives matter had the line of something it's a reality that black lives matter. and i think it's clear this is something that she's taking very seriously. >> the first lady of the united states as a senator and secretary of state for americans before now. somebody needs to ask that question. >> she's beating bernie sanders bay 2-1 margin. he knows he has some -- >> for the community. that's what i'm saying. is it all politics playing to the base or genuine concern? that's just a question.
9:17 pm
>> all right. that's it for domestic issues. for now stay with us. more to come including what the candidates had to say what they didn't say about national security and terror. we'll talk about that next. er t unusual with my moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, the possibility of a flare was almost always on my mind. thinking about what to avoid, where to go... and how to deal with my uc. to me, that was normal. until i talked to my doctor. she told me that humira helps people like me get uc under control and keep it under control when certain medications haven't worked well enough. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections,

our job is to train and provide military support for muslim countries in the area who are prepared to take on isis. one point i want to make here that is not made often. you have incredibly wealthy countries in that region. countries like saudi arabia and qatar. it happens to be the wealthiest country per capita in the world. they have got to start putting in some skin in the game and not just ask the united states to do it. >> let's bring back our panel to talk about the debate. there was a lot of discussion about fighting isis and troops on the eard senator sanders says he often has he wants, quote, muslim troops on the ground and we'll support and help. this is their fight and not our ours. >> bernie went a little off the rails on the foreign policy
9:22 pm
section. and steve -- wasn't only republicans wondering why it took until 10:15 for foreign policy to come up in the debate. i noticed that no one mentioned it. it was change. it was a chance for hillary to shine. it always is. the debate is her best setting. the interview and the stump is not. tonight she was given a run for her money. on foreign policy she got to tease him about the ran don plan to send iranian troops into syria along with others from saudi arabia that people are laughing at. he couldn't find the word encryption or dark space but he tried to get in the silicon valley helm. she bellowed at lester holt. i never see her beam. i was the happiest i've ever seen her. she was able to say she advised president clinton in the situation room. she was able to stay the most experienced and the most ready and capable without being a
9:23 pm
hawk. so she was able to filibuster around and not differentiate herself from bernie sanders. they both, you know, wouldn't allow ground troops. they want more skin in the game from other countries. they want an air campaign and on and on. i thought it was -- he actually said it was a priority to destroy them. he was trying to use firm language. this is not his wheel house. he's not well prepared. he hasn't tried to study up. it's a lazy factor. much the way donald trump said we're going to bomb them. he never comes to debates prepared to say one sentence about foreign policy let alone a paragraph and bernie sanders is the same way. >> sanders said the top priority has to be getting rid of isis. deal with assad later. we have to work with everybody that would help us on isis including russia. you talk about secretary clinton her conversation about her relationship with putin. is said we have an interesting
9:24 pm
relationship. this is after lester holt laid out the criticism of what happened with russia ever since she gave them the reset button. she went ton say you have to stand up to putin. he'll take whatever he can get away with. he's sort of a bully. we have to get europe involved. >> she basically gave the donald trump answer. she said i'll negotiate with them and negotiate hard. it was clear when she was asked that question. i thought the same thing. it was like she was trying to hear in her own head what the focus could tell her to say this point. she didn't want to say it was successful because reality. she didn't want to say i'm not going to do anything because that wouldn't appeal to the democratic base. she tried to have it both ways and come up interesting response. she had several missteps, i think. i agree that bernie sanders was incoherent. he doesn't even have a newspaper reader's knowledge of the subject matters. hillary clinton also had trouble
9:25 pm
answering the questions. she was asked twice whether -- do you agree that president obama made a mistake when he walked away from the red line? she didn't give an answer. the answer is easy. i think virtually everybody would give the answer and the answer is yes. she was in her defend barack obama at all costs mode. so she didn't want to do it. and, also, she had the discussion about bashar assad and the use of chemical weapons. she was talking in a tense as if he hadn't actually used the chemical weapons, which is very strange. >> i think we may have a sound bite. >> the president's decision to go after the chemical weapons once there was a potential opportunity to build on when the russians opened that door resulted in a very positive outcome. we were able to get the chemical weapons out. i know from my own experience as
9:26 pm
secretary of state that we were deeply worried about assad's forces using chemical weapons. >> and then he said she went on to say you know what would have happened if he would have used chemical weapons. the problem he did use chemical weapons. barack obama's red line was move or use chemical weapons. it was well documented bit united nations and backed up by our intelligence community that he had used chemical weapons and had done so more than a dozen times. for her to talk about it in that tense suggests she's u unaware that he did. or she doesn't want to deal with that reality, which i think is confirmed by her on unwillingness to answer the two questions posed directly to her. >> and interesting we have governor o'malley fresh off the debate stage joining us now. governor, are you there? >> i'm here, shannon. how are you? >> very good tonight. i know that tonight at times had to be frustrating for you. there was lot of battling back
9:27 pm
and forth. you had to fight to get your voice heard among that. it's do or die time in the polls with iowa two weeks away. what are your hopes for turning things around? >> every format has been like that. each one betterbeatenati ee een. the people of iowa have a way of surprising the pollsters. i'm taking the campaign to the people. i'm going let the people decide. others determine the rules and the format of the debate but it sounded like from the audience tonight people wanted to hear more from me. i feel pretty good about the future. i believe our country is looking for a new leader. someone that can heal and i believe i can do it better than either of the other two people on the stage. >> i have to ask you, tonight there was a lot of back and forth about guns and health care. there was a question about what each of you would tackle your top three pirate priori-- prior.
9:28 pm
our panel is here. how come there was no foreign policy of isis. that's at the top of the worries list for voters. why wasn't it in your top three? >> the top three, i believe, the question was framed in terms of initiatives. so i believe we need to get wages to go up. i believe that we need to have a new agenda for american citizens to employ our people, and i believe that we need to recognize that climate change is a greatest business opportunity to come to us in a hundred years. all of those things are the things that make us strong at home that fund the better national security policy. i'm glad to go toe to toe and answer questions about homeland security and preparedness with anyone. i'm better prepared than any of the candidates on terms of combatting lone wolves here in the homeland in terms of centers and protection of our critical infrastructure. and every day the first job as a commander in chief is protect
9:29 pm
the people in the united states. i know that. i've been a governor and a mayor. lead us to victory and two world war. i believe the call of the question, at least, as us heard it on the stage is about domestic initiatives. >> all right, governor o'malley, we thank you for your time. we'll see you in iowa on the campaign trail. >> thank you. i think now we have a live look of a secretary clinton and former president bill clinton at their watch party tonight making the rounds and checking with folks. we'll get back to that when we have it. i want to ask about the issue of iran. obviously, it's a top news topic right now. secretary clinton was quick to repeat numerous times she was proud of her portion in krafrting the new deal we have. also, maintaining the fine line about they're doing bad things in the region. we have to keep an eye on it. does that work? >> i don't believe it works.
9:30 pm
as i listened to -- i heard the reverend start full bustering. for her to say she's proud of what she did and maybe taking credit where she can't really face she it it. those are the things that are beginning to concern me more and more as we consider her as a possible candidate. i don't trust it. >> very quick, does she get credit on the run? she was secretary of state when it was coming together. >> she played a role. it's not a particularly popular deal right now, but maybe over timepopularity. one of the things she struggles with, frankly, is trying to distinguish herself from president obama she has a different foreign policy view. i think she's more hawkish than she is. i think it might explain what we were talking about earlier where she has to walk the fine line of not criticizing president obama. >> we have to leave it there for now.
9:31 pm
panel, thank you very much. this is a live look at the clintons visiting their watch party afterwards. a lot of work for her to do with iowa and new hampshire just around the bend. can't miss the spin on that. we will talk about when it comes to small business, she's in the know. so strap yourselves in for action flo! small business edition. oh, no! i'm up to my neck in operating costs! i'll save the day! for plumbers and bakers and scapers of lawn, she's got insurance savvy you can count on. you chipped my birdbath! now you're gonna pay! not so fast! i cover more than just cars and trucks. ♪ action flo did somebody say "insurance"? children: flo! ♪ action flo cut! can i get a smoothie, please? ooh! they got smoothies? for me.

now? can i at least put my shoes on? if your bladder is calling the shots... ...you may have a medical condition called overactive bladder or oab. you've got to be kidding me. i've had enough! it's time to talk to the doctor. ask your doctor about myrbetriq to treat the oab symptoms of urgency, frequency, and leakage. myrbetriq is the first and only medicine in its class. myrbetriq (mirabegron) may increase blood pressure. tell your doctor right away if you have trouble emptying your bladder or have a weak urine stream. myrbetriq may cause serious allergic reactions. if you experience swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue... ...or difficulty breathing, stop taking myrbetriq and tell your doctor right away. myrbetriq may affect or be affected by other medications. before taking myrbetriq, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems. common side effects include increased blood pressure, common cold symptoms, urinary tract infection, and headache.

dnc chair debby wasserman shul is joining us live from charleston. this was a more spirited debate than we've seen. the polls are tighter than they've been for secretary clinton and senator sanders. your take away >>well, i was so proud of all three of our candidates. we continue to show the american people how we is and deserve to have the 45th president of the united states be on our debate stage. they were substantiative and talked about the issues that are important to the american people. education, health care, and how to keep people safe from harm, and making sure we can build on the economic progress that we've been able to make after
9:36 pm
president obama has helped pull us out of the worst economic depression. contrast it with the debate stage on thursday which was a food fight and personal sniping. as we move into the general election campaign once we have a nominee, it's going to be even more clear that the american people want to continue to build on the economic success we've had with a democratic president. >> secretary clinton continues to hold a double digit lead nationally with respect to senator sand piers. it she becomes your nominee, there's polling that suggests trouble. our latest polling shows she loses to senator rubio 50 to 41%. to senator cr-- your reaction t the numbers? >> well, we're focussed right now on getting ready at the dnc for our nominee when our primary
9:37 pm
nominated contest is over. national polls in january don't mean very much. you know, we know it's a state by state polls in primaries are the ones that are especially aware the focus should be. >> last time we had this chat it was a saturday night right before christmas. this time we have a sunday night on a holiday weekend. nfl football playoffs. downton abbey on tonight. and there are concerns the debates have been buried. you say i did my best along with the staff and debate partners to come up with a schedule to maximize the opportunity for voters to see our candidates. really? >> yeah, and by any measure, we succeeded. we had record viewership for our democratic debate. we've vested 58 of the 61 debates that were held in the primaries in 2008 and 2012.
9:38 pm
we've had, you know, really, when it comes even though we don't have a reality tv star who is leading our polls, and not the dozen pack of candidates they've got, we have had really, you know, pretty good numbers comparatively to the republicans. and because we have our debates on almost all broadcast netwo networks, have been on weekends just like the republicans. and the next two debates are on the weekdays. no matter what day it's been on, we've had record viewership. that's because americans are interested in what our candidates have to say and want to continue to make sure we move our campaign forward. >> senator sanders is celebrating tonight. should he become your nominee, is the democrat party prepared to fully back and push someone who describes himself as a
9:39 pm
socialist? >> you know, we're focussed on getting ready for whoever wins the democratic primary. that's the responsibility of the democratic national convention, and, you know, we're not sure what is going to happen. it's been a robust campaign. it will continue to be. what i know is that anyone of our three candidates, i'm confident, will win the presidency if they become our nominee. because they are talking about the issues that matter to the american people. they're not talking about, you know, barring an entire religion simply based on who they are from entering the country. they're not talking about deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants who are here because they want to make a better way of life for themselves. they are not doing everything they can to alienate important groups for the electorate who are the group who decides who is elected. that's why we won five out of the last six presidential elections and if they continue to alienate large groups of important voters, they were

9:42 pm
mentioned him once. >> there were comments that could have been about him without saying his name. what about the issue of guns? it was a hot topic tonight. >> that's right. you had several candidates trying to debate about who had the worst rating with the nra and the other night on the republican debate on fox business, of course, you heard a lot of republicans standing strong for the second amendment. >> we have a huge mental health problem in this country. we're closing hospitals, we're closing wards, we're closing so many because the states want to save money. we have to get back into looking at what is causing, you know, the guns don't pull the trigger. it's the people that pull the trigger. we have to find out what is going on. we have to protect our second amendment. >> it's not an option. it's not a suggestion. it's a constitutional right of every american to be able to protect themselves and their family. >> none of these instants that the president points to at the
