tv   Justice With Judge Jeanine  FOX News  January 24, 2016 1:00am-2:01am PST

1:00 am
heroes we spoke to. as trace reported oz started the shadow warriors project. it supports wounded american private contractors like these guys with their medical bills and other janine" starts now. i'll have more news on "fox & friends" tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. breaking tonight, a massive winter storm bearing down on the east coast. officials reporting at least 17 deaths related to the storm so far. hello and welcome to "justice." i'm judge jeanine pirro. thanks for joining us tonight. with iowa just days away, i'll talk live with gop presidential front-runner donald trump in just a few minutes. but first let's go live to times square where our own kelly wright has the latest on this winter storm that has shut new york city down. kelly? >> reporter: hey, janine. or judge janine. i'm out here at times square, broadway shows are closed, but my good friend here is
1:01 am
delivering some pizzas to your employees, right? >> yes, sir. those who didn't make it back home to their families, we've got some pizza. they're staying at the hotel with us. they're at the hyatt. >> so you're providing for your employees. >> i'm assistant housekeeping manager. >> that is awesome. god bless you for that. thanks for hanging out here. enjoy. it's a festive atmosphere out here even with the shows being shut down and the travel ban in effect because cars can't be on the highway. you can see that the police have been out here. they've actually paved -- not paved, but shovelled this area. the road crews. and they had a snowball fight just a few moments ago. but, look, the main thing is that broadway is shut down. no shows. but over here, you can see that fleetwood is doing his thing. there's some dancing going on. everybody's enjoying the show from sweet lou who is also on youtube. as sweet lou was telling me that rain, sleet or snow, his show is still on the go.
1:02 am
>> awesome snow! >> reporter: i think she's a little bit happy. when people don't have enough to eat, sometimes they have too much to drink. where you from? >> england. >> reporter: england. are you accustomed to this kind of snow in the uk? >> no snow. >> reporter: what do you think about new yorkers' reaction to the blizzard of 2016? >> it's crazy. >> reporter: it's crazy? okay. okay. what's your name? >> emma. >> reporter: what part of the uk are you from? >> newcastle. >> reporter: newcastle, love it. are you from there as well? >> no, from italy. >> reporter: from italy. good. welcome to america and the bib apple. i hope you're having a grand time. >> thanks a lot. >> reporter: were you here for a broadway show? >> for work, actually. >> reporter: for work. enjoy the night. judge, that's the way it is out here right now. very festive atmosphere. police are doing their job, keeping people safe and sound. and look, as long as you've got
1:03 am
no place else to go, you might as well let it snow. back to you. >> you know what i love about new york city? it's 9:02. it should be pitch black, but it is so white out there because of all the lights. and it's good everybody's having a good time. and by the way, pretty cool that guy did a plug for the hyatt by giving you guys free pizza. >> reporter: he sure did. a really good guy. i'm going to go over here and check out sweet lou again. >> okay. you enjoy. >> play some more for me, bro. >> thanks so much. and also breaking tonight, we are just nine days out from the iowa caucuses. and a few days away from thursday's gop debate right here on fox news. ted cruz on the campaign trail today in the hawkeye state where he got an endorsement from talk show -- talk radio host glenn beck. take a look. >> i am here to announce that i am officially endorsing ted cruz to become the first hispanic
1:04 am
president of the united states, the first first-generation president of the united states, the most conservative president of the united states since ronald reagan and the next president of the united states, ted cruz! >> and joining me now to react, gop presidential front-runner, donald trump, who's on the phone from iowa. good evening, donald. your latest reaction to this endorsement for ted cruz. >> well, i don't think much of him. i'm not a big fan of glenn beck, but i am a big fan of sarah palin and willie roberts who just endorsed me. i'm having a great time out here. we have had the biggest crowds, and it's been amazing today. we're just loving it. we're loving iowa. i'm down here tonight. i was here last night, and we're all over. i think we're going to church tomorrow in iowa, so it will be a lot of fun. >> you know, donald, when you
1:05 am
talk about church, you know, the latest poll has you at 42% with the evangelicals, and cruz is a second with 25%. do what do you attribute such a high number with the evangelicals? >> well, i don't know what it is exactly. i can say that we've just really bonded, and i've spent a lot of time with the evangelicals. the relationship has always been great. and we're really just doing great in the polls, and the evangelicals love me, and i love them. and we're doing great with the tea party, and we're, you know, we're now leading in iowa, which means we're leading in every state. and we're leading every single national poll by a lot. so there's more coming out tomorrow. and from what i'm hearing, they're going to be good, but who knows? i'm hearing they're going to be really great. we're doing really great. but iowa is a great place. then i'm going out to new hampshire. then we go to south carolina, and we go to nevada, and then the s.e.c. it's going to be a very exciting -- i think a very exciting month. >> all right. let me ask you this, donald.
1:06 am
you know, glenn beck, i mean, after "the national review," and maybe if we have time, we'll get to that, but glenn beck supporting ted cruz. why do you think he's doing that? >> well, he's failing in his business, and his ratings are very bad. and you know, he got fired from fox. unlike you, janine, he was fired. and you're doing well. i hear you're doing great, actually. and hence i'm talking to you tonight. i've known you a long time. i just want your listeners to know, you are really an outstanding woman, okay? >> thank you, donald. thank you. >> i hope you all understand that, but you really are. i've known you for a long time. >> yes, we do. and you know, donald, when i look at these polls, you are now in the latest fox news poll ahead of hillary clinton. >> right. >> you can see there, 47%-44%. so you beat hillary clinton in a head-to-head. >> right. and we haven't even started on hillary yet. you know, we had a total of 17, now we're down to about 13, and we have to do that first.
1:07 am
i haven't really started, although you could say i started on her last week. but i don't think hillary's going to be a problem. i don't know that she's going to be allowed to run. don't forget, you're a great judge, and you understand the law, and i know your stance on her e-mail situation. you feel very strongly about it. and so do many other great lawyers feel very much like you do. so i don't know that she's going to be running. but if she does, i think we'd do very well against her. >> all right. and i want to go back to cruz for just a minute. i'm going to ask -- i think we've got some sound of ted cruz. >> okay. >> i like donald trump. he may say unpleasant things about me. i have no intention of responding in kind. i do not intend to insult him. i like and respect him. and i respect the men and women here, the men and women of iowa too much. i don't think you want or deserve to see politicians
1:08 am
engaging in name-calling and insults. but i do think substance matters. i think record matters. >> your reaction to him, donald? >> well, i think it's very nice. but is that the same man that three days ago was doing big numbers? you know, i've, you know, reciprocated, and i think was very successful when i reciprocated. but, you know, ted was pretty rough two, three, four days ago, and now he's taking a different tune. and i think that's great. i like that. i like what he said. and i'm okay with it. i really am. i think it's great. but it's not the same man that was talking three days ago, janine, that i can tell you. >> right, right. >> but i'm okay with it. i think it's great. i think if that's the attitude, i think it's a smart attitude. >> all right. let's talk about the latest reports now that michael bloomberg is considering running as an independent candidate. what do you think of that?
1:09 am
>> well, i wouldn't mind it. i mean, i love the competition, and i understand michael. i know michael. and i could see him doing it. and i would love to have michael running. you know, honestly, i love the competition. i think i'd do very well against michael. and i think i'd do very well, frankly, in a three-person race. it would be fine. but i would love to see michael do this. >> but if he gets into this three-way race, i mean, who is he a bigger threat to? who is it that he hurts? >> well, he could very well hurt the democrats. you know, he's very, very anti-second amendment, very. and he's got a lot of other things. i think he'd hurt the democrats, personally. you know, i'd love to see him in the race, actually. >> interesting. all right. and let's -- i have to ask you about "the national review" this week. you've got all of these supposed big names coming out against you. and first of all, why are they doing it, donald? i don't think i've ever seen this kind of antagonism in a primary by so many people against the front-runner. you know, it's one thing if you
1:10 am
don't like one person, but you are the front-runner. and for these people to gang up, i find it, you know, something that i'm not -- and i think -- i don't think americans are accustomed to. >> well, it's a failing magazine, you know that. it's been failing badly, and they're getting some publicity. and i know some of them. like glenn beck, we just mentioned him. i didn't want to do his show. i wasn't able to, only a question of time, and then i guess he called a few times and i wasn't able to do that. i would have done it eventually. not a lot of listeners. then all of a sudden he became hostile. and i understand that. if i had a show like your show and you called me, do the show, and if you called for a long time and i wasn't able to do it, i would feel the same way, probably. i would have gotten hostile. he went very hostile. and the others, too. brett bozell, he comes up to my office looking for money, and he wanted money for his whatever it is. his company, his foundation, whatever. and, you know, eventually you just say i'm not going to be a
1:11 am
bother seeing him, and then all of a sudden these people are writing things about me. i can only say this, the "national review" is a failing publication. it's not going to be around wrong. and they'll get some publicity. a lot of the writers think it's going to help me more because people are tired of the negativity from these people. all they do is talk, but they don't have solutions to anything. >> well -- >> and so i mean, i'm fine with it. i'm not going to be reading it because i don't read it very much anyway. but a lot of people -- a lot of people don't read it anymore. >> if, as you predict, you are going to be the republican nominee for president, how are you going to convince these people to get behind you and to get their followers behind you? >> well, i've had very few followers, but i will say this. i'm not going to really try. i'm going to do well. we've done well. one poll came out 48% tonight. i'm at 48% in florida whereas a guy like bush who spent a fortune. he spent almost $100 million on
1:12 am
advertising, and he's at 3%. nobody cares about him. i mean, he's irrelevant. and you have other people like that where they're spending all of this money, and they're just wasting it. you know, we have a tremendous -- i think what's going to happen is many of the democrats are going to come over because they're tired of incompetent management and incompetent government. you're going to get a tremendous crossover of democrats. and i think i'll win states like potentially even new york, but we'll win michigan. we'll win ohio. we'll win florida. we'll win pennsylvania. i think i'm going to win a lot of states that no other republicans are going to be winning. i think we're going to do great. >> donald, one last question before the break. thursday night's debate. are you going to do anything different? special? >> i don't think so. i mean, i've been doing -- you know, i love the debate. that was the one question i had because i've never debated before. i debate but i don't debate formally on the stage. and the one question i had of myself, i've never done that before. and these guys do it on a nightly basis. and it really worked out well. the polls have all said i won the debates, and everybody said
1:13 am
i won the last debatead a good it. the whole thing has been an amazing experience. people in this country, and i'm meeting millions of people, the people in this country are amazing here. they're amazing. they're really smart. they really know what's happening. and you know, my them is -- and this is what they love -- is make america great again, and that's what we're going to do. >> well, they certainly have a great deal of affection for you, donald, anyway. donald trump, thanks so much for being with us tonight. >> thanks a lot, janine. great honor. so long. when we come back, the two republicans who won iowa in 2008 and 2012. you're going to hear from them live. plus, our live coverage of the winter storm that is crippling the east coast. continues. and send us your pictures from the storm. facebook or tweet me me, #judgejanine.
1:14 am
1:15 am
1:16 am
1:17 am
breaking news. the storm continues to hit d.c. so let's check in with peter ducey live in georgetown with the latest. >> reporter: and judge janine, now that the snow is starting to taper off, we're seeing them -- we're seeing city officials and some of the contractors come and start to plow. this is "m" street in georgetown. but business owners haven't even tried.
1:18 am
and this is a part of town, washington, d.c., and georgetown where on a saturday night, very often, the retail and the bars and the restaurants stay open really late. and they are always really crowded. but because the sidewalks are like this and because it's just been so nasty out, even though there are some restaurants bars that are open, we have not seen much of a big crowd at all. and we just want to give you a look. steve, our photographer, is quite a pro walking backwards in two feet of snow. "m" street here is not closed. but you'd never know that because there are hardly any cars, and people are just walking in the middle of it as though there's some kind of a festival or something. just now, a whole parade of snowplows came on through. and people kind of scurried. and now that they did come through, the ground is very, very slick, so please be careful to the crew. but this is what the best roads in washington, d.c., look like tonight. we've been all over the place.
1:19 am
mostly in northwest washington. there are cars that are stuck. there are cars that have been abandoned downtown. we saw a car that was abandoned right next to the j. edgar hoover fbi headquarters building, which on any other day, if there's a car that's left in front of that building, the authorities would be all over it. but this is a different situation. they are completely stretched out. and they know that this storm is just impossible to beat. now, though, we are seeing more and more emergency vehicles on the road. the police are -- there's a stronger police presence. they're around checking on people. and there are more snowplows in the last one hour than we've seen in the last 24 hours since really they were pretreating the roads yesterday. so we should know before too long what the final snowfall amount was around here despite some of the big winds and whiteout conditions that we had all fight, we have not heard widespread reports of power outages. and again, some of these bars and restaurants tried to open up
1:20 am
tonight, but since there has not been much of a crowd last night or tonight, this is going to be -- this is going to be big bucks lost during a normally very busy time of the season for businesses in georgetown. >> peter doocy, thanks so much. and the countdown to iowa is on. and my next guest actually won the iowa caucuses in 2008. joining me now by phone from the campaign trail in cedar rapids, iowa, republican presidential candidate governor mike huckabee. good evening, governor. >> hi, judge. great to talk to you. >> great to chat with you. i remember the days when we used to be right after each other on fox. >> yes, indeed. >> how's it going out there for you? >> well, it's going great. we're in the middle of a 150-event month in january. just in iowa. so i don't think anybody can say that we are rolling over, giving up or slowing down. >> well, you know, four years
1:21 am
ago at this time, ten days out, you were second to last and came from behind and won. do you think that that can actually happen again this year? >> oh, absolutely. people forget that for 40 years, the iowa caucus has always produced big surprises. and the people that were absolutely touted by the east coast media usually don't win. and the winner ends up being somebody that they had not factored in. and i think we're going to see a surprise february 1st. >> well, let me ask you this, governor. you know, it appears that the numbers are out on the -- of the evangelicals. you're a former pastor. you won iowa in 2008. and you've got trump with 42% of the evangelical vote. cruz with 25%. how do you explain that? >> oh, the evangelicals have never been a monolithic group.
1:22 am
i think it's one of the greatest myths that has existed in republican politics. evangelicals don't always vote according to a predictable pattern. i didn't really have an overwhelming evangelical vote even eight years ago. i i had a lot of rank-and-file working-class people. a lot of folks voting for me have been evangelical. but i was standing up to the folks who themselves were standing on the factory floors, sweating through their clothes, lifting heavy things and knowing that candidates who are holy on subsidiaries of the funded candidates were never going to be out there being a champion for them. they might say they would. but then you knew it wasn't going to happen. >> governor, very quickly, if there is a candidate who is not you, do you pledge to throw your support behind that candidate whether it be donald trump or anyone else as the republican
1:23 am
nominee for president? >> well, absolutely. we all pledged that. this is a process where, you know, we're all believing that the republican is going to be better than any of the democrats. and i found it a little offensive that some republicans were saying they wouldn't support donald trump. but the republicans require donald trump to sign a loyalty oath. >> interesting. >> so i expect the party to support me if i'm the nominee or whoever gets the nomination, if it doesn't happen to be me. >> all right. governor huckabee, much luck to you. thanks so much for joining us tonight. >> thank you, judge. good to talk to you. and with me now, the winner of the iowa caucuses in 2012, rick santorum. good evening, rick. >> hello? >> hi. good evening. rick? >> yes. hi, judge. how are you? >> all right. good. just making sure. four years ago at this time, ten days out, you were in second to last place and came from behind and won. do you think that this can happen again? >> you know what?
1:24 am
when i talk to people out here in iowa, a large percentage of people out here, and it's well in excess of 50%, are still undecided. i think if you look at the reality of, you know, who's leading the race, they're all new faces. that's good for them. but i think people, when they get into that caucus and when they talk to their neighbors and when, you know, as they, you know, consider who the best person to be president is, i think we're going to pick up a lot of steam. i think we're going to surprise some folks. >> all right. you know, you have always been considered, rick, a very conservative candidate. what do you make of this latest hoopla on the "national review" and all of these conservatives coming out and saying donald trump cannot be the republican nominee? what do you say to them? >> well, i think rick santorum should be the republican nominee. so i agree with them. i don't think donald trump, i don't think ted cruz, i don't think marco rubio, jeb bush, i don't think any of them should be. i think i should get the
1:25 am
republican nomination. >> rick, do you agree that whomever the republican candidate is, everyone has an obligation to get behind that candidate? trump or anyone else? >> judge, i would say this. and i'm here in neola, iowa, tonight. and we just had a town hall meeting. folks are still here. and, you know, i think there's broad consensus, we need to get rid of the democrats in the white house, whether it's bernie sanders or hillary clinton. and we're going to support whoever the republican nominee is. so that's not a question. the question is who's the right person to lead that charge? >> and what place do you think you're going to take in iowa, rick? >> well, i mean, the goal is to finish first. and obviously, we're sitting, you know, at the back of the pack right now. and i understand that. but we came from the back and rose four years ago. you know, look. a top four finish or something like that would be terrific. and i think would separate us out from the pack. but look, judge. you know, in the fox debate
1:26 am
coming up is the same. i will be the only candidate on the ballot in iowa who has never been on the national stage for the debate. i've been in always the, quote, undercard debate. and so for us to finish ahead of anybody, to be honest with you, would be a big win for us. i think we'll do a lot better than people suspect. >> good luck to you, rick santorum. >> thank you so much, judge. >> all right. and up next, you just heard from donald trump and the guys that have won iowa in the past. now, let's take it to our political panel to battle who they think are going to win. that's next. stay with us.
1:27 am
1:28 am
1:29 am
1:30 am
1:31 am
i would point out that even right now today, mr. trump supports amnesty. mr. trump's proposal, everyone knows, he proposes to deport
1:32 am
everyone here illegally. but then he says as soon as they get back, he'll let them back in and let them become citizens. >> when is ted going to hit me? and finally he did. so now i hit him. and we have to talk. and seriously, when i say hit, this is legitimate stuff. he's got a number of problems. number one, nobody knows. and i mean this 100%. i know he can run for the prime minister of canada because he was born on canadian soil. >> that was donald trump and ted cruz going at it on the campaign trail in iowa today. we are nine days from the first votes to determine who will be the republican presidential nominee. joining me now is fox news contributor and author kevin jackson, and trump national spokeswoman katrina pearson. good evening to both of you. katrina, you are very confident that your candidate, donald trump, is going to win iowa. what makes you so sure? >> hi, judge. great to be with you.
1:33 am
i've got to tell you, i have seen so much support for mr. trump. there is a broad base out there for him. he is bringi ining in independe millennials, tea partiers, evangelicals, you name it. this is the guy that can win the general election, and people want to win. i'm very confident that mr. trump is going to win iowa just because of the massive amount of support there. and iowans want their country secure. they want the border secure. they want what donald trump -- >> katrina, what do you say to those who say that, well, you know, they have those big crowds because of celebrity, and people just want to see him? what's your response? >> well, that hasn't been my experience. but i will say that there are some people that come to see this donald trump phenomenon. and what they say afterwards as well. now i get it. the emotion, the passion, the enthusiasm on both sides. donald trump loves people. you've seen it. everybody feels that when they're in the room with him. he's very serious and passionate about the country, janine.
1:34 am
>> all right. kevin jackson, you don't think that, do you? >> well, i agree with parts of what katrina says, but i do believe there is a segment of the people who are caught up in donald's celebrity. i think that one of the bigger problems, and katrina sort of highlighted probably without thinking about it is the idea that donald trump, like a lot of liberals, tend to link people in these categories, the evangelicals, the blacks, the latinos, the muslims, the women, you know. and for donald, everybody loves him. and i don't know that everybody loves him quite as much as he may think that they love him, but he's certainly garnered a lot of attention from all sides. >> kevin, he's got the numbers. kevin, one of the things you say is that you think that cruz is still running the best campaign overall. >> i do. >> and you predict that he's going to win. the numbers don't say it. >> well, look.
1:35 am
so from an iowa point of view, and with all due respect to iowa, you've had two people on in the last segment both won iowa at one point and both lost the presidential race in the long haul. i believe that with respect to donald trump, he's done an amazing job to earn the media, to get the free media that's kept him in the limelight. i believe, though, how far, when you get to the ground game and where the money's being spent for the long haul, i think -- and maybe katrina can speak to this differently, but i think that's probably where cruz has an advantage. >> donald trump does not have to buy ads. and yet he's resonating with the american people. and the truth is, you've got jeb bush who spent $100 million, and he's right at the bottom of the pack. so katrina, i think that maybe you would disagree with what kevin is saying. >> well, i think you just pointed out the numbers there. i mean, you've spent $100 million, and you can't get off the ground in the polls? it's not the earned media that
1:36 am
donald trump is getting that's helping, it's his policies. he was the one that brought several of these issues to the front of the table that none of the other candidates were talking about. and the people support. there is a ground game for donald trump in iowa. and all over the country for that matter. and the numbers don't lie, kevin. it wasn't me talking about it. it's the polls that are. >> go ahead, kevin, let's hear it. >> let me make a quick point here. jeb bush, trump has been beating up on him pretty well. instead of saying, look, donald, i've got two people in my family that have been in the oval office. they don't build buildings in downtown new york. they've run this country. and like hip or not, i can relate to them, and i can refer to them. who are you going to refer to? oh, that's right. bill clinton. hold on. had jeb bush -- had jeb bush said something -- hold on a second. >> wow! >> if jeb bush said something like that, i think he would have gotten earned media. so what's happening here, again,
1:37 am
donald trump's done a masterful job of getting earned media. but when you start looking at the mechanics, the people on the ground, i think that that's probably -- and again, you know, i don't know this for a fact, but i believe that's probably where cruz has a little bit of an advantage. >> all right. katrina -- >> no, the problem is policy. jeb bush supports common core. he supports amnesty. he supports all of the things that the establishment supports. that the party has been -- that the party has been rejecting. the republican base has been rejecting. >> that's right. and he's not a factor. >> the last few cycles. >> he's not a factor, but cruz will be a factor. >> this is a factor. but cruz didn't talk about these issues until donald trump is. that's the difference. >> i have a feeling that it's not about jeb bush, but we'll see. thank you, katrina. thanks, kevin. >> thank you. and up next, the sailors who were held hostage by the iranians are now back on american soil. details and analysis from ambassador john bolton when we come back.
1:38 am
1:39 am
1:40 am
1:41 am
1:42 am
welcome back to "justice." i'm judge jeanine pirro. a devastating snowstorm has essentially shut down washington, d.c., new york city and a number of other locations along the east coast. not everyone has the good fortune of being warm at home tonight. you're now looking at a picture from the tomb of the unknown soldier at arlington national cemetery where sentinels from the 3rd infantry regiment maintain a constant vigil regardless of the weather conditions at the tomb. we here at "justice" and at fox would like to salute them for their service. and speaking of the military, the ten u.s. navy sailors who were taken hostage by the iranian revolutionary guard last week are now at home.
1:43 am
they returned to their home port of san diego last night. but there are still many unanswered questions about that situation which was a huge embarrassment to the united states and the obama administration. now, the navy has not said when the sailors will be free to speak to the media. so i thought that we'd have former u.s. ambassador to the u.n., fox news contributor john bolton give us his opinion. good evening, ambassador. >> good evening, judge janine. how are you? >> i am well, thank you. now, they're back. we haven't heard much, but you know, i have a lot of questions. so we've got -- the optics are not good. we've got these ten sailors, they're on their knees, guns to the backs of their heads. you know, a position that's reminiscent of those being held captive before they ended up being decapitated. this is for 15 hours. and then we apologized to them. a lieutenant was forced to say he made a mistake and how sorry
1:44 am
he was. do we know any more now than we knew 12 days ago? >> no. and i think the administration's silence tells you a lot right there. and it's amazing, the way the mainstream news media have just let this one disappear. >> right. it just went away. >> based on what we know so far, the worst part of this is the way the obama administration behaved with secretary of state john kerry thanking the iranian government for releasing the ten marines so quickly. when the fact is, they never should have been taken. their boats never should have been seized. their equipment never should have been gone over. and i think some of it confiscated. >> right. >> the treatment of the marines themselves, you've described. the whole affair was unacceptable to the united states from start to finish. and yet john kerry thanked the iranians. >> right. and then we write a check and release $100 billion in funds. but let me ask you this. were we in their waters? and if so, why? my understanding is we were
1:45 am
miles within their waters. and let me just run this by you. i spoke to someone this afternoon who talked about the fact that the boats that they were on were very well made boats, that they had the best equipment, that they have charts with big "xs" as to where they can't go. we've got two of them -- two of those boats, not one. and they are not in communication with anyone in the united states at the time that they are being captured. what's going on here? >> yeah. well, obviously, those are questions we don't know the answers to yet. but let's take the case from the iranian point of view. let's say the best case they can make. let's just say hypothetically, these boats were snooping on the iranian revolutionary guard's naval base on farsi eisland. that base itself is an intelligence-gathering base. we're not at war with iran. and if our boats were in their
1:46 am
territory, the customary naval response by iran should be to hail the boats, say "identify yourselves and get out of our waters." seizing the boats was a big overreaction, unless they had the objective of embarrassing the united states, which they succeeded in doing. this is conditioning appeasement behavior on the part of the president. and they're winning at that, too. >> well, and what's interesting is that it's the same kind of thing where, you know, if they were in someone else's waters, basically there is an effort to assist them by other mariners. are you in trouble? do you need assistance? get out of our waters. but, you know, did ash carter, who in the beginning, said that there was a navigational error did anyone ever confirm that maybe there was a mechanical problem or anyone explain why there was no communication? >> no. and that's one of the key parts of the story that doesn't hang together.
1:47 am
whether it's navigational error, mechanical error, were both boats unable to communicate? i find that hard to believe. and remember former defense secretary bob gates said that he ordered these boats always to be within range of a helicopter gunship or another american naval vessel. and these were not. who changed those orders? >> okay. you know, i heard also today that the boats were moving from -- i believe it was bahrain. >> bahrain to kuwait. >> to kuwait. >> right. >> what was that about? >> well, that would be normal maneuvers in the persian gulf to get up closer to iraq and the potential use there. but these are international waters. we have a right of innocent passage that includes military vessels. that's why it was the iranian navy's behavior that was so offensive here that should have
1:48 am
provoked a reaction from the state department. instead iran got exactly the opposite reaction. they got thanks for letting our people go quickly when they shouldn't have been seized at all. >> and you know what's interesting is now that they're back, ambassador, that we don't hear from them, whereas we did have active-duty people on that high-speed train in paris, you know, and they were allowed to talk about what happened. and yet our guys are humiliated, embarrassed, and made to look like, you know, they are the bad actors here. but let's hope we get to the bottom of it. ambassador john bolton, always good to have you on. >> thank you, judge. >> all right. and when we come back, we'll hear from new jersey governor chris christie who left the campaign trail to deal with the devastating storm that has hit new jersey today.

1:53 am
the roadways in the northern part of the state that lead into new york city in conjunction with the governor. i just got off the phone with him. we're going to continue to evaluate this. there may come a time where we decide to close the hudson river crossings because of the wind situation and because of the snow accumulation. on both sides of those crossings. both in the northern new jersey side and in new york city. but that's a decision that governor cuomo and i will make over the course of the day. but be assured, i've spoken to andrew three times today. we're continuing to talk with each other on a regular basis, compare notes, and make sure that if there's any action that needs to be taken by the port authority of new york and new jersey, that we'll be able to do that in a coordinated, cooperative way, as we always have. >> now to our very own janice dean, when is it all going to end? >> soon. soon, pie friend.
