and maria, the capitol for the most part is closed. the house is off for a week, and the senate doesn't come back until wednesday. >> reporter: well, that's welcome news because the roads don't look that great here. the crews have been out doing a great job of getting the snow off the roads, but they are icy this morning. they probably are going to stay that way for several more days. i want to share the scene out here. we have snow piles everywhere. i'm sheer -- i'm sure similar to new york city. snow around everywhere. piles on sidewalks. people having to walk on the street. again, try to stay home if you don't have to be out and about. there's weather controversy, though, i want to share out of washington, d.c. we know that the area receives anywhere between 20 to 30 inches of snow with the western suburbs receiving even more than that. there's one particular report, it's coming out of reagan national. they're reporting 17.8 inches of snow. it's being disputed because the crew that measures snow there, they lost their snow measuring

device during the blizzard. people are questioning its validity because they have to use a different method than everybody else. it's a problem for weather records of such a historic storm at least for here in d.c. regardless, we know that we received a lot of snow. it's going to take a while to clean it up. we also have seen -- other scenes in places like new york city, like you mentioned, of snow piles everywhere. a similar scene up and down the i-95 corridor from washington, d.c., and as far south as northern virginia extending to places like long island. let's talk about snow totals now. they were significant not just in the big cities that we focus on sometimes. look at this report out of west virginia with as much as 42 inches of snow. other inches in virginia picking up to 39 inches of snow. another big concern with the storm was the wind. it really delivered. here are some of the peak gusts that were recorded. hurricane force in parts of delaware and virginia. that's what helped produce a lot

of flooding along coastal areas, as well. your forecast temperatures for today, they should be getting above freezing for some of the big cities like d.c. and even into philadelphia. so we're hoping that that will be helping to melt the snow. then during the nighttime hours, they dipped back to below freezing. and now that will be refreezing melted snow on the roads, producing black ice. stay safe out there. for tuesday, temperatures should be a little bit warmer, into the 40s. we hope that mother nature continues to help with the cleanup effort. let's head to you in new york. >> all right. keep in mind this is a deadly storm. at least 29 people died. a lot of them died while shoveling snow or carbon monoxide. >> they say this is unbelievable for physical therapists and chiropractors. even if you're at 19, the prime of your life, 95% of americans shovel wrong. we don't bend our knees. we don't -- >> use your legs and knees -- your legs and your bum and not your back so much. >> and a lot of advil.

for britain, "you are the next terror target." the attacks in paris in october left 130 dead. they are likely armed and extremely dangerous. this morning, a massive manhunt underway for three violent criminals. one of them a murder suspect who cut their way out of a california jail. the fbi and the u.s. marshals now offering a $50,000 reward for the capture of the three. brand-new photos show the massive hole they cut inside their cell. they escaped through the plumbing system and rappelled off the roof using bedsheets. they broke out sometime friday morning. no one noticed this for 16 hours. severe durbin -- severe turbulence sending seven people to the hospital. the flight was forced to make an emergency landing three hours into the flight. those injured included three flight attendants and four passengers. they were all sitting in the back of the plane.

couldn't get any crazier, there could soon be a wild card in the race for the white house. former new york city mayor and billionaire michael bloomberg is reportedly thinking about running as an independent for president. insiders say he'll make that decision by the first week of march. what kind of impact would it have on the race? it would make things crazy. here to talk about it is russell bernie, former campaign manager and political adviser for ross perot. so you know a thing or two about a third-party run for president. >> yes, we experienced it on several occasions. it's a huge job to run for president. somebody that can sell finance takes out a major part of the difficulty not having to raise the money. >> and apparently bloomberg told insiders that he's willing to spend up to $1 billion of his own money. so the way things are now, if it were trump, clinton, bloomberg, would that work?

>> no, not -- it doesn't really work from an ideological point of view. there's no right-left dichotomy that leaves the center open as there would be if there was a cruz-sanders contest. bloomberg fits neatly in the middle. with the clinton and trump candidate, they're pragmatists. you bring bloomberg in, another pragmatist, you'll have a battle of the titans, but there's not going to be a lot of ideological difference among them. >> right. donald trump apparently said yesterday somewhere along the campaign trail that he would welcome his friend, michael bloomberg, jumping in because he would damage the democrats. does that work like that? >> no, it never works like that. everybody brings their own voters. they all compete for votes on election day. they all compete for the same typical voter turnout. it doesn't help or hurt to have an additional candidate. it is competition. it's easier to win this a two-person race than a three-person race. >> if he were to run, okay, he's got billions of dollars, great. what would he bring to the

over the weekend, nearly 15,000 flights were canceled. 1,200 this morning alone. so a lot of problems at airports. you know, as for driving, don't even think about it. city officials from d.c. and baltimore up to philly and new york saying please stay off the streets, had the our crews clear the snow. you know, it's tough advice to follow when you have no other way of getting around. here in washington, the underground metro has been closed since friday. it will resume a limited service in about 30 minutes at 7:00 this morning. public schools in d.c., philly, and baltimore are closed. and mayors up and down the east coast are asking everybody to just please be patient. >> the second-largest snowstorm in terms of accumulation in the history of the city. >> everyone keeps saying this is historic snork. this is not business as usual. this is an unusual response and recovery of a historic event.

so i'm asking for residents to continue to be patient. >> reporter: new jersey is still recovering from severe flooding thanks to a record storm surge. over the weekend, chris christie took a break from campaigning to help his state recover from a historic storm. other high-ranking officials were stuck in it. both the vice president and the defense secretary were stranded in florida. ash carter made it back yesterday. the vice president should be back home in delaware sometime today. and as for congress, the house has delayed all votes until february because of this storm. outside, there is a lot more action. for the first time in years, it is now legal to sled down capitol hill. there were hundreds out there yesterday. and there will likely be many more out today because both the federal government and d.c. public schools are closed. >> thank you very much. who says congress can't get anything done during -- before

on pants. that's my advice to you. meanwhile let me tell you about the blizzard of 2016. the classic nor'easter, millions of people under record snow. >> the big dig-out could take days as temperatures whoever right around freezing. >> maria molina is live in washington, d.c. maria, here in new york city the schools are open, but there in washington, d.c. the schools are closed. >> the conditions out here for driving are not really that great. we have a lot of ice on the roads. some snow that's left over. and the crews are out and about, doing their job early this morning. but, here in d.c. you can see the capitol building behind me just a couple of days ago when the blizzard was raging here, 50 cross d.c., it was tough to even see it behind us. we have a lot of snow piles laying around. and much of the area received some very significant snow totals. we saw 20 to even 30 inches of snow in the d.c. area, just west of here, some areas picking up way more snow than that. and during the snowstorm, a dry spot worked its way in to d.c. so that's an area of dry air,

and that kept down our snow totals just a little bit. we could have seen even higher totals in d.c. the snow, regardless has left a mess behind, not only in d.c. but in many other cities up and down the i-95 corridor as well. anywhere from northern virginia all the way to new york city. places in long island. and even across new england, getting hit hard, as well. we saw that more than 10,000 flights were canceled because of the storms so the airport scene was not very pleasant. i'm sure a lot of people had to be patient. and while people were inveesed by the storm, and given a lot of work to do with shoveling, they were still out and enjoying the snow, at least here in d.c. check out this massive snow ball fight in d.c. in the du pont circle yesterday, which was star wars themed. the snowball fight was named snow wars. so a lot of fun out there. i tried to participate. i drove over, but i couldn't find a parking spot. of course, there's too many snow piles everywhere. but here's a look at some of the other totals from other cities. you can see in west virginia, up to 42 inches of snow were

recorded. in virginia, 39 inches. the wind was another big issue. we saw hurricane force winds in parts of virginia and delaware gusting up to 85 miles per hour. and that's one of the reasons why we saw so much flooding along coastal areas of new jersey and delaware. a quick look at your forecast temperatures for today, rising above freezing during the daytime hours. and a little bit better as we head into tuesday. let's head over to you in new york. >> all right, maria. the flooding in new jersey is terrible. and it was a mixture of having a full moon with the extreme tides and the hurricane force winds, spelled trouble. >> can you imagine if the weather that we had over the weekend happened a week from today, in new hampshire. how would that impact things? and what about two weeks from tomorrow in iowa. we've got some brand-new -- >> you mean iowa next and then new hampshire. >> exactly right. iowa coming up just a week from right now. monday night will be the caucus night. we've got some brand-new fox news polling out. and the good news for donald trump is, he's doing better than he was last time we checked.

in the first week of january. he's up 11. ted cruz is actually gone down four points. marco rubio has gone down three points. and it looks like ben carson is down two points, as well. everybody else much less than that. >> yeah. >> looks like marco rubio got the des moines register. we'll see if that registers with any of the voters. because they got his endorsement. and today governor perry has decided to go around with ted cruz, who is going to endorse him, see if that works. governor perry didn't have the best numbers but he's in a heck of a retail politician so maybe, a fellow texan is one of the leaders. he believes like many believe it's down to two. i don't believe it's down to two. >> also the endorsement that came from glenn beck, that was after this poll was taken. so we haven't seen the effect on that for ted cruz. >> yes. >> plus you got the national review saying anybody but -- anybody but donald trump. it's interesting, there was an item on thehill.com yesterday, when i was snowbound i was reading, said there are a number of jittery republican senators

who think that donald trump would actually be better for them than ted cruz in so much as their ability to keep the senate majority in republican hands. because, ted cruz, they say, his colleagues, conservative bond undermines his standing within the party base. so they'd prefer donald trump to ted cruz. that's what they said in the hill. >> you also had the governor of iowa come out and urge iowans not to vote for senator cruz because of his opposition to ethanol. >> right. today david axelrod has a column in "the new york times" saying why donald trump? look at barack obama. barack obama won, because he was the opposite of george bush. donald trump is the opposite in all his attributes, than you could say barack obama. he's deliberative, he's contemplative. they say he delays too long never comes up with a decision. what's donald trump? quick and concise and direct and he's confident. now you look at a guy in president obama who is looking at the back stretch, his final

it's almost like 2008 all over again for hillary clinton. as bernie sanders surges ahead in new hampshire, and according to at least one poll takes the lead in iowa. but clinton's playing down sanders' unexpected success and the possibility that she could lose to the senator like she did to senator barack obama in '08. >> is there a deja vu happening here? >> no, there isn't. i just have to tell you, i can only react to what i'm doing, feeling, getting responses from people, and you know, i feel great that we have the level of enthusiasm that we do. >> maybe when she gets out of the north. but do recent poll numbers spell doom for the clinton campaign?

let's ask fox news contributor former congressman and presidential candidate dennis kucinich. is that a fair question for chuck todd to ask? is it deja vu? >> well, any question is fair. the matter is that bernie sanders looks like he's going to win in new hampshire, and it's a competitive race in iowa. but once you get past iowa and new hampshire, then there's a whole different kind of election, because hillary clinton has enormous support among african-american and latino voters, and i think that will be reflected in some of the returns in southcarolina, in nevada, and also when you go in to the southern tier of states. >> interesting. let's look at the cbs battleground tracking poll out of iowa. it has sanders on top by one, that's if the more people show up, they say it's better for sanders, because he's exciting other people to get involved. here's the thing to keep in mind, congressman, i keep in mind rudy giuliani. remember he had the huge lead in florida, didn't feel as though he could compete in new

hampshire and iowa and he waited. and by the time they got to florida the momentum was on the other guy, everybody else aside, and would eventually go to john mccain. do you see a parallel? >> well, brian, you know the question of momentum is the key question here. senator sanders has conducted a vigorous grassroots campaign that would appear to be giving him momentum in the first two states. however, the makeup of the electorate begins to change a little bit once you go to south carolina, and nevada, and then in the southern tier of states. and that's why i'd say you can't write hillary clinton off. >> right. congressman let's move on to the fbi investigation that we understand is going on below the wire. and a inspector general appointed by barack obama has leaked out the fact that there were three dozen times in which the highest level of confidential documents were passed through a private server, to the point where bob gates, hardly a political hack who has said nice things about hillary clinton in the past, said more than likely the chinese and others have been able to get to

knew we had some flooding down here for the first time in ourc. the photographer and i, our roadkill on the main road here was a fish in the middle of the road that we couldn't avoid. we're hoping it was already dead, but that gives you a sense how high the water came up. now here is the dune situation. so we had two feet of snow. we're 120 miles south of you guys in new york down the east coast. two feet of snow where you are. two feet just in our drive west and south. water was the problem here, not so much snow. this is the back end of the dune. you can tell how much it was cut away even higher down there. i'm going to try to walk around to the front and show you the oceanside because it's like 30 feet high. this is the dune that protects the town and you can see, with me standing next to this, how high this is. this is the thing that's the last protection for all the beachfront homes here. and this is what governor christie was calling the town selfish because it wants these dunes. can you imagine if this big dune wasn't here when the water hit the town we have been wiped out.

and so now this dune's been wiped out so bad they've got to replenish this because brian, steve, anna, the worst storm on the jersey coast happening in february and march, so we're only one month into winter. we could have bigger storms without the protection coming next. >> no kidding. all right, steve, down live north wildwood, new jersey, showing us the beach erosion. >> wow. >> wonder how the town's budget is doing from that? sometimes the small towns can get their budgets blown. >> you would hope that the state would help. >> yeah, and federal funding in some situations, too. >> if the feds helped build the dunes will they help repair the dunes? we're going to look into that. meanwhile, heather nauert what's gone our mind? >> a couple of things going on. i want to bring you some video out of alaska. a man captured the moment a 7.1 earthquake rocked parts of that state. take a look at this. >> it's still going. like doing the hula. >> like doing the hula, he says.

the lamp in his living room swaying back and forth. and take a look at the fish tank in the background. four homes were destroyed in that earthquake. luckily no one was hurt. there was a smaller 4.5 quake that hit west of anchorage this morning. a girl's basketball team in minnesota won't finish their season. why? because they were kicked out of the league for being too good. a letter was sent home to the players on the rogers area youth basketball team. it says that the girls don't belong in the league because their skill level is higher than other teams. listen. >> three teams are threatening to, i guess, either forfeit the games against us, or flat-out quit the league. so for some reason, they kicked us out. >> are we supposed to play worse just to make them happy? >> she put it well right there. are we supposed to play worse just to make them happy? well the head coach says that he is not happy. he's meeting with the league later this morning. we'll bring you more on that as

having someone be a patient and eventually become a counselor? >> well, the advantages are empathy. you know, somebody goes through treatment, they want to give back. and so, you know, you go through treatment, it's probably the worst experience that you'll have. you've got to change almost everything in your life, including your family. and a lot of times people gain this empathy and compassion, and they say, you know what? i want to stay, i want to help somebody else, and they go on and they learn a skill, and a learn to help other people. >> and you hear these stories that it's also their own therapy continuing to keep them sober. because there is a relapse rate for addicts of about 60%, we're told. sometimes even higher than that. your program specifically helps folks by their gender, and also by their age. how? >> well, what we do is we do

gender specific program. we're the first gender specific program in florida. south florida. we, about ten years ago, we have men on one side, women on the other. and then recently i decided that we need to go age specific, as well. because with age there's different needs that a 30 or 40-something-year-old has as opposed to an 18-year-old or a 20-year-old. we keep it small. and, we involve the families at a very high level. >> and you say it's your belief that mental health issues, and substance abuse often goes hand in hand. and that's why you try to treat both there, too. quickly if you could tell me how the program works, how much it costs, and how long the certification process is. >> well, the treatment program in terms of the cost, insurance covers most of it. we have self-pay rates. we work with people. we want people to get better and

with this story, this all started when somebody decided, you know what? let's save money. let's not get the water we always got it the old way, let's get it someplace else. and what was in that water? >> well, steve, the way this really happened is the community made the decision that city and the county all wanted to switch away from detroit's water system. back in 2013 and there was a 7-1 city council vote to say let's move to this new water authority. we had an emergency manager there that ratified it. but the transition happened. and the issue was, not just the source of water, the source of the water didn't have lead itself. it was really the lack of treatment on the follow-up. >> because they had to put these anti-corrosive chemicals in when you pipe the water through. they didn't do that. well then shortly after they started the new water, though, governor, people started showing up saying, hey, look at my water. it's brown. and it smells funny. then what happened? >> yeah. well, again, there were challenges there. so there were some actions taken

to try to improve that. to make that better. but lead is odorless and colorless so the real challenge, the real health care problem is the lead piece of this. and that's where the problem came in is that this is where government failed. there was far too much effort to talk about doing testing, to follow prot coles, to follow the lead and copper rule and not enough focus on common sense. to say you switched your water source, they had the detroit water. it should have been continued. and that's the frustrating part of all this, steve. there were multiple failures that caused this to happen and i'm responsible. the folks at the state level work for me so i accept that responsibility. and i really want to fix this situation. >> and so far, at the state level, i know you have -- you've put a couple of people on suspension. you can't fire them because of civil servant rules. what else are you doing at the state level? >> well we're doing a tremendous amount. the national guard has been out there. we've covered over 37,000 homes. there are about 30,000 homes in flint, to actually go to those homes and say can we help you

with filters, with water. would you like to do a water test. here's information on getting blood tests. here's replacement cartridges. we've been very active in the community and there's been tons of volunteers helping. so it's coordinating all this effort to address the problem, to see how we can mitigate the damage. >> i know the epa had been telling the city of flint the water is fine. i know one of the epa big shots has called it quits. governor, when did you find out there was lead in the water? >> not until the end of september. beginning of october is when i learned there was unsafe lead levels. again, this is again representing the problem. that some people talked about it, but i had the department of environmental quality, the department of health and human services confirming that water perspective, there wasn't a lead problem, that's unsafe from a blood lead level, blood test level, that there wasn't also a problem. >> right. >> and that finally got resolved at the end of september, beginning of october when they said they were incorrect in their conclusions. that day i declared that we need

to take action and that's when we started offering filters, water in terms of resources to people to try to turn this situation around. >> okay. so you knew about it september or october. then, you know, fast forward we're four months later. when did the people of flint realize they, wait a minute, we've been dripging bad water? >> no, they realized that same time frame. >> okay. >> actually before. and i need to thank, there were some outside experts, there was a professor from virginia tech mark edwards, there was dr. mona anatischa from the blood test level, they were founding the alarm in the community. and the point is our government people, the civil service people, didn't agree with their conclusions, and didn't understand, until a month or so later. and that delayed our action plan and i feel terrible about that. i mean, that's what drives you crazy about this. most state employees are fabulous people, working hard. but in this particular case, there was a serious cultural problem where they were far too technical and not using enough common sense. >> sure. governor, a lot of people don't

trust government but we trust government to keep our air and our water clean, and in this case, total breakdown. >> that's true. and this is where we need to focus in on one, let's address the short-term issue. and then secondly, let's do a lessons learned on this. the same month i learned of the issue, back in october, i appointed an independent task force to go do that analysis. so what are the lessons learned to make sure this never happens again in michigan? and i hope it never happens again anywhere. >> we all do. all right, governor rick snyder joining us today from ann arbor. sir, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> all right. the lawsuits already starting out there. coming up next on this monday, a police officer called about a bunch of kids making too much noise. but instead of reprimanding them, he joined them in a game of basketball. and who did he call for backup? that tall guy right there. shaquille o'neal. the police officer joins us next. feel a cold coming on?

i've got some other backup for you all. >> shaq attack. here to talk about how it all went down is gainesville police officer bobby white. good morning to you, officer. >> good morning. >> the last person they thought would get out of that vehicle was shaquille o'neal. how did he wind up on that street with you? >> those details i'm not really clear about. it was a surprise to me, too. we came in that day, to go out there with some of my fellow officers, and shaq shows up. >> yeah. >> but he is very pro-officer, as you know. his dad is a military background and we know that he interned with law enforcement officials. he loves you guys. >> right. >> yeah and i guess, what did you notice that was unique about this? i mean normally, when a former athlete or former politician, former hollywood star, is trying to get some attention they bring the media with them. he wasn't out to get attention, was he? what do you think his intentions

were going out there to play with the kids and with you? >> it was clear, he made it clear that he didn't want media out there. he wanted, i believe he wanted to keep it very intimate and about the kids. and that's exactly what he did. it was -- it was incredible. >> bobby, how did you adjust your game to his game, to try to complement his play? did you watch the video prior? >> there's no adjusting my game. it is what it is. >> okay. so let's go back to the initial reaction when you showed up on that street. and what were you -- you were surprised to see that it was just kids playing basketball. how did you want to remedy that situation? >> well, it's not the first time i've gotten that exact call. not at that spot with these kids, but i've responded to these calls before with kids playing basketball or playing in the street loudly. i knew how i was going to handle it. >> which is what? >> which obviously i'm never going to tell kids that 5:00 in the afternoon that they're being

too loud playing basketball in the street. it's just not going to happen. >> that's what you want. >> yeah, that's what they're supposed to do. they're kids. they're supposed to be outside playing at that time. >> yeah. they weren't inside playing video games either, which we noticed a lot of teenagers do and they're outside burning off some steam, and just having a good time out there. but what made you decide not just to not punish them but get out there and play with them? >> well, you know, i don't know if you can notice in the video, but when i first got out of my car, i could tell the kids, his first thought was great, here's the police, they're going to come give us a hard time. i don't know exactly where that comes from. for them. but you know, it's our job to change that. nobody's going to change that perception that they have of us. but it's our responsibility. they're the future leaders of our country, and you know, at the same time we need to make them understand that we're here to help them.

washington since friday. for the first time in days, people are actually getting out because they can finally see the pavement, they're driving around. this is union station. and we've seen over the last hour a ton of cars coming through here, dropping off people, because the trains are running between d.c. and new york. i was just inside. the departure board is still full of delays and cancellations. so if you're trying to hop on a train you need to check their website first. make sure your train is not one of the ones that's delayed or canceled. but some trains are getting out. and there's even a coffee shop back open inside union station. so that's good for everyone involved. as for the airports, flights leaving d.c., that's starting to pick up again this morning. over the weekend, there were some 15,000 flights canceled. 1200 just this morning. so, again, it's really touch and go. you got to make sure that you're calling ahead, making sure you know if your flight has not been canceled. and you know, kriefing is starting to get a little bit better. but city officials are asking everyone to please stay off the

roadway as much as possible so that crews can come in and clear out all of this snow. you know, it's tough advice to follow here in washington. because the last few days, our metro has been shut down. but it just opened back up at 7:00 this morning. so that's some good news. the federal government, though, is closed. public schools in d.c., baltimore and philly are also closed. mayors up and down the east coast are asking everyone to just please be patient as we dig out. but then, in addition to all of this snow, new jersey is still dealing with a ton of flooding. they had severe flooding thanks to that big record storm surge, so it's starting to get better there. but people are really waking up to the same reality there as they are here. and that a lot of this snow and water -- snow and water has frozen overnight. and it's making it for a pretty icy commute. back to you. >> it has. all right kristin fisher live in our nation's capital outside union station. thank you very much. i was watching over the weekend,

saw peter doocy running throughout downtown washington, d.c. with a yardstick. somebody i didn't see on the streets was bret baier. we've got some images of you and your family living it up in the snow. is this a snow tunnel you built? >> it is. you know, there was the mountain of snow that was pushed to the side, about ten feet tall. and my two kids were destined to make a fort out of it. so we spent a lot of the time digging that tunnel. >> like el chapo, kind of. >> exactly. exactly. our own el chapo escape through the snow. >> did you guys go sledding to? i know legally kids are finally allowed to go sledding in washington, d.c. >> we did. it was a lot of up and down and up and down. but it was fun. they had a blast. we finally got out, though, this morning. and you know, the worst roads are up here on capitol hill. i don't know if it has to do with congress taking a snow week or what. but it's starting to get cleared out. >> what's the deal with this?

they were supposed to work two days this week, said oh, what the heck, we'll just take the whole week off. who makes decisions like that? >> i know. i made it in to talk to you guys. >> let's talk about the polls. because fox has released a poll. this might be the most impactful one and the less impactful one prior to the debate clearly but certainly leading up to the caucus one week from today. what do you read into this? from likely voters trump has a significant lead up 11 points. he's improved bret baier, 15 points since the last time we did this poll. how has he done it? >> no, it's amazing to watch the donald trump organization. donald trump himself. obviously this was nip and tuck in iowa. ted cruz ahead, and some polls now towards the end more and more polls saying that he's ahead. we've always talked about what is going to happen with real voters getting to the caucuses on, you know, snowy nights, in schoolhouses and fire houses. but you look at those numbers and it's hard to deny that the momentum seems to be towards the

trump way. >> meanwhile let's go to new hampshire and take a look. the primary is two weeks from tomorrow. and once again donald trump, since the last time we took the poll of likely republican voters, there in new hampshire, donald trump has gone down two points. still a commanding lead. double what ted cruz has. ted's gone up two. marco rubio is down two. sand the rest of the pack is less than ten. that's pretty much as we've seen it going. hasn't it been? >> it has. i mean there's always been this big spread in new hampshire. i think the dynamic that we'll see over the next few days, obviously we have our debate on thursday. in des moines. three days before the caucuses. and we'll see how that all factors in. but right now you have to say that donald trump is advantaged by the position he's in. >> kasich and christie seem to be pushing for the independents. they can make their own decision in new hampshire, right? they can vote for the democrat or republican. do you think that that would have a significance in this? because that's likely republican

voters, which would give trump the additional advantage. should we factor something in to that when we look at these polls? >> well, sure. new hampshire is an open primary. iowa is closed. you have to be registered republican. in new hampshire you can vote -- you can be undeclared. you cannot democratic or republican. you can be independent. and a lot of the people make their minds up in the last week in both iowa and new hampshire. >> these polls can't take into account organization and ground game. we'll have to wait until the actual votes are cast to see what happens. over the weekend, bret, "the new york times" wrote the story about a potential party crasher. mayor bloomberg from new york city, is considering a run as a third party candidate, and got -- until march a friend of his is saying according to the "times" so that he can get on all the ballots by november, spending a billion dollars of his own money potentially. who would this help, who would this hurt? >> a big deal. you know, his aides are saying if it is donald trump and bernie sanders he is definitively in.

he may be in anyway. i think it could take potentially from both parties obviously his gun control views, and some of his other views, but his business views, some republicans would look at favorably. now, if just play this out, if it's donald trump the nominee, and it's bernie sanders the nominee, and then michael bloomberg gets in, it's possible that nobody gets to the 270 electoral votes needed for the presidency. at which point, the race would then go to the house of representatives. and each state, because of how it's broken up by congressional district would get one vote. and by the makeup of the house of representatives, the rub republicans would then win and donald trump would be your president. >> very interesting. if you look at michael bloomberg and say he's tough on terror. he's also when it comes to guns, he'll attract the democrats. >> he's tough on salt. >> and he actually has a political record. >> he does.

and i listen i think there's no doubt that he's considered getting in before. i think this is -- >> twice. >> this is real. these stories shouldn't be taken for granted, and he obviously has the money to make an impact. >> all right. meanwhile, over the weekend, cbs ran an interview, i think it was lee cowan sat down with the president of the united states in troidetroit, the president w talking about how he saved the car business. but he was asked, you know, if you could, you know, stick around for another term, would you like that? and surprisingly, because we'd heard he'd love he says, i've had enough. watch. >> the bubble is the hardest thing about the presidency. and i don't think anybody with sense ever gets used to it. it's the thing that makes me happiest about my tenure coming to an end. the one thing that gnaws on me is the degree of continued polarization. this has gotten worse over the

last several years. and i think that in those early months my expectation was that we could pull the parties together a little more effectively. >> he actually does say, bret, flat-out i will not do it because it's too tough on my family. >> yeah. and you know it's interesting. it was off the record, but we had lunch with all the anchors doing the state of the union address and i'll just tell you the sense is that he's ready for post-presidency. and, i think that, you know, both parties are -- you're seeing a dynamic that is, you know, in part because of disaffection or a problem with how washington has run both in the presidency, and on capitol hill, and the president has overseen this where he's right the parties have split, even further. >> all right. we're going to be watching you on thursday night. the republican debate right here on fox news. bret, good luck, and we'll talk to you back here next monday.

bach due okay is one, hossein nayeri, and jonathan tieu reportedly cut their way out of a california jail cell in orange county. these brand-new photos show the massive hole that they sliced out of a grate in their cell. they escaped through the plumbing system. and then rappelled off the roof, that's what they used to rappel, bed sheets tied to the like that. the trio breaking out sometime on friday morning. but what's hard to imagine, no one noticed they were gone for 16 hours. some severe turbulence sending seven people to the hospital. it was an american airlines jet. it was heading from miami to milan when it was forced to make an emergency landing about three hours in to that flight. those injured include three flight attendants and four passengers. they were all sitting in the back of that plane. but otherwise will be okay. we're told. the first votes haven't even been cast yet but rick sabt rum could get ready to throw in the towel. the republican presidential candidate telling "usa today" that he may reconsider his

front. and he's not just quiet. he's listening. he's processing. he knows what he doesn't know. and i cannot tell you what a virtue that is in this business for the president of the united states, for an individual who wants to lead this country. and i am convinced, without a doubt, that on day one, this very committed conservative american will be ready to be commander in chief. >> what doesn't he know, though? >> well, i think it's -- you know, he understands that he's going to need experienced individuals around him. for instance, nobody has worn the uniform of the country. ted understands that to lead this country, to make sure america is safe, and that our military men and women are taken care of, he's going to need really experienced individuals who had that veteran experience. who have the knowledge of how the military functions to be on his team. and that's a great example. you know, there are some folks out there who don't know what

they don't know. >> well let me ask you this, governor, when you were running for president, you know, one of the things you had said was the fact that we need somebody who has operated something. you had operated a state government. there are a number of other state governors who would have the same qualification whereas ted cruz, first-term u.s. senator. >> yeah, and i will tell you that having spent the time with the senator, i am convinced now that he has that understanding, that knowledge, and again, when no one knows everything about the federal government. i mean it's just impossible for them to -- if anybody said stands up and says i know everything about everything, you might be a little suspect. senator cruz is knowledgeable of a vast array of how the government works. what i'm looking for is someone who is a principled conservative, and has always maintained that principled conservatorship. not just being for whatever they're going to be for to get your vote at this particular

point in time. that principled conservative status is going to be very important as we go forward. >> governor perry, you say that that's one of the reasons that you like him, because he'll stand up for an issue even if his stance isn't the popular one. but what do you say about critics who say he's hard to get along with. >> well, what i say is that, you know, my early days in the governorship, i vetoed 82 bills my first session of the legislature and people went oh, my god, you can't do that. you've destroyed your reputation. you can never get along with the house or the senate. and what it is, it's setting the marker. it's basically saying here's my philosophical position. sometimes you've got to hit the mule upside the head with a 2x4 to get its attention. i think that's exactly what the senator's done. people know where he's going to stand. >> bob dole is somebody who said i looked at ted cruz and donald trump, it's a two-man race. i go with trump. what don't you like about trump? >> well, i would tell senator

dole that maybe if he spent the real quality time that i spent with senator cruz, he'd have a different outlook. and i think that's really true. this is an individual that i got to see, that i got to really spend some time -- >> governor how much time did you spend with donald trump? >> you know, i've been around donald trump a time or two, and had the opportunity to have some conversations with him. my issue is one about when there are 22 movement conservatives who stand up and say, you know, we got a real issue with the positions and the changing of positions, i think all people, whether they're in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, wherever, you know, need to step back and say, you know, what is the philosophical core here? and i don't have to ask that question about ted cruz. i know for a fact this is a committed conservative, he's always been there, he hasn't changed his position on issues. just listen, he's a courageous man and that's one of the great aspects of leadership. a person -- >> so this isn't anti-trump,

education, and -- the big thing is the education part. >> what's changed, rick? what do you mean seeing the way things are going. what really struck with you? >> some of the things i struck with him. i didn't endorse him until i sat down and had breakfast with him and we sat there for an hour and a half and we talked. my big thing is, i'm from a blue collar family. i worked in a pawn shop, and not a great part of town my entire life. and i've met all kinds of people. and the thing that struck me the most is that he wants to bring back trade schools in this country. it's a really big thing to me. you know, i know business owners here in las vegas, and they can't find a welder. and our current high school system has sent every kid to high school, everything in high school is to set you to go to college. then we have half the kids don't go to college and we just throw them out in the street, they don't know what to do. >> and senator rubio has a story that a lot of people can relate to with his dad being a bartender, his mother being a maid. a lot of people can relate to that. a lot of credit ins say his

record on immigration is going to come back to haunt him. they think he's weak on immigration. where do you stand? >> you know, i mean, i also tell the press this all the time, i'm not a mouthpiece for him. me personally, i believe that, you know, eventually we can't deport 12 million people. we just can't do it. we've got to figure out some system. maybe have a large fine ten years from now if they pay their fine they can get a path to citizenship, something like that. i don't have a problem with that. we can't deport that many people. >> i think it's also important that the des moines register also endorsed him over the weekend. even though he's third place in iowa. real quick, rick, you said you've lost business because you've come out as a republican and come out for rubio. >> one more time? i didn't hear that. >> have you lost business because you've done this? have people gotten -- stayed away? >> oh, yeah, oh, yeah. i used to get -- the phone would ring off the hook, literally, for me to do speaking engagements, different

what he has to say, and how he says it. i think -- i mean, any politician who can gather a thousand or 2,000 or 3,000 people is unusual. he's-he and bernie sanders are each pulling in 20,000 people. which is amazing. >> are we just in a "throw the bums out" stage right now? >> well, there's certainly -- well, i don't know. there are a lot of people running on the republican side. 15, 16 people, whatever it is. and they're impressive people individually. and they range across the spectrum. in many respects. so i'm kind of encouraged. i mean, democracy is not tidy. we know that. and i've been around since 1932, and been watching presidential elections since i guess roosevelt. and voting since eisenhower. and this is unusual. >> does it bother you that he's been very critical of the bush iraq? >> no.

i think people do that in campaigns. they look for some way to be noted, and call attention to themselves. and you don't do that, saying nice things generally. you do that by being critical, in your business, they say if it bleeds, it leads. so the person who says the most extreme thing or the most bizarre thing is the one that's covered. and politicians know that. and it works. >> well, mr. trump said over the weekend he thinks that if he wins iowa he may run the table. he's also said over the weekend, jeb, you should just give it up. that's what he said over the weekend. why don't you think governor bush can catch the traction that many expected in the beginning? >> oh, i don't have any idea. i don't know him. and i think probably there are some people who are uncomfortable with the dynasty idea on the republican side, or the democratic side. with hillary clinton. but, you know, democracy is not tidy.
