hi, everyone, good morning. today is monday the 25th of january, 2016, i'm anna kooiman. days after a deadly blizzard slams the east coast the dig-out begins. the government still shut down. the schools closed. and the new worry, more extreme weather. >> yep. president obama wouldn't run for a third term. even if you let him. >> the bubble is the hardest thing about the presidency. and, i don't think anybody with sense ever gets used to it. >> okay. so what's next for the outgoing president? stay tuned. >> and a florida police officer called to a noise complaint, shocked to find it's just a couple of kids playing basketball.

on pants. that's my advice to you. meanwhile let me tell you about the blizzard of 2016. the classic nor'easter, millions of people under record snow. >> the big dig-out could take days as temperatures whoever right around freezing. >> maria molina is live in washington, d.c. maria, here in new york city the schools are open, but there in washington, d.c. the schools are closed. >> the conditions out here for driving are not really that great. we have a lot of ice on the roads. some snow that's left over. and the crews are out and about, doing their job early this morning. but, here in d.c. you can see the capitol building behind me just a couple of days ago when the blizzard was raging here, 50 cross d.c., it was tough to even see it behind us. we have a lot of snow piles laying around. and much of the area received some very significant snow totals. we saw 20 to even 30 inches of snow in the d.c. area, just west of here, some areas picking up way more snow than that. and during the snowstorm, a dry spot worked its way in to d.c. so that's an area of dry air,
4:03 am
and that kept down our snow totals just a little bit. we could have seen even higher totals in d.c. the snow, regardless has left a mess behind, not only in d.c. but in many other cities up and down the i-95 corridor as well. anywhere from northern virginia all the way to new york city. places in long island. and even across new england, getting hit hard, as well. we saw that more than 10,000 flights were canceled because of the storms so the airport scene was not very pleasant. i'm sure a lot of people had to be patient. and while people were inveesed by the storm, and given a lot of work to do with shoveling, they were still out and enjoying the snow, at least here in d.c. check out this massive snow ball fight in d.c. in the du pont circle yesterday, which was star wars themed. the snowball fight was named snow wars. so a lot of fun out there. i tried to participate. i drove over, but i couldn't find a parking spot. of course, there's too many snow piles everywhere. but here's a look at some of the other totals from other cities. you can see in west virginia, up to 42 inches of snow were
4:04 am
recorded. in virginia, 39 inches. the wind was another big issue. we saw hurricane force winds in parts of virginia and delaware gusting up to 85 miles per hour. and that's one of the reasons why we saw so much flooding along coastal areas of new jersey and delaware. a quick look at your forecast temperatures for today, rising above freezing during the daytime hours. and a little bit better as we head into tuesday. let's head over to you in new york. >> all right, maria. the flooding in new jersey is terrible. and it was a mixture of having a full moon with the extreme tides and the hurricane force winds, spelled trouble. >> can you imagine if the weather that we had over the weekend happened a week from today, in new hampshire. how would that impact things? and what about two weeks from tomorrow in iowa. we've got some brand-new -- >> you mean iowa next and then new hampshire. >> exactly right. iowa coming up just a week from right now. monday night will be the caucus night. we've got some brand-new fox news polling out. and the good news for donald trump is, he's doing better than he was last time we checked.

he may be in anyway. i think it could take potentially from both parties obviously his gun control views, and some of his other views, but his business views, some republicans would look at favorably. now, if just play this out, if it's donald trump the nominee, and it's bernie sanders the nominee, and then michael bloomberg gets in, it's possible that nobody gets to the 270 electoral votes needed for the presidency. at which point, the race would then go to the house of representatives. and each state, because of how it's broken up by congressional district would get one vote. and by the makeup of the house of representatives, the rub republicans would then win and donald trump would be your president. >> very interesting. if you look at michael bloomberg and say he's tough on terror. he's also when it comes to guns, he'll attract the democrats. >> he's tough on salt. >> and he actually has a political record. >> he does.

i think people do that in campaigns. they look for some way to be noted, and call attention to themselves. and you don't do that, saying nice things generally. you do that by being critical, in your business, they say if it bleeds, it leads. so the person who says the most extreme thing or the most bizarre thing is the one that's covered. and politicians know that. and it works. >> well, mr. trump said over the weekend he thinks that if he wins iowa he may run the table. he's also said over the weekend, jeb, you should just give it up. that's what he said over the weekend. why don't you think governor bush can catch the traction that many expected in the beginning? >> oh, i don't have any idea. i don't know him. and i think probably there are some people who are uncomfortable with the dynasty idea on the republican side, or the democratic side. with hillary clinton. but, you know, democracy is not tidy.
5:47 am
people get up there, they have to defend themselves. they have to argue. they have to persuade. they have to be able to talk and think on their feet. and i think the process of watching everyone run around that track is a good one. we're going to know more about those people on both sides of the aisle when it's over. >> absolutely. what does it say about the state of the democratic party, though, right now, if bernie sanders, a socialist, self-described socialist, is the guy leading the pack? >> i think the first thing it says is, no one's teaching economics in school. and we're >> or capitalism. >> we're evolving a population that really doesn't understand that socialism doesn't work. i think mrs. thatcher said the only trouble with socialism is pretty soon you run out of other people's money. >> yeah. >> you said something right before we got started, we asked you even though you didn't even send e-mail you looked at the hillary clinton situation, and you think this is serious, because the person who followed you in office, secretary of defense, said more than likely
5:48 am
she got that private e-mail hacked. what's your sense? >> oh, i think he's probably right. the thing about revealing classified information. number one the information gets out. number two, the fact that you have that information tells the other side that, in fact, you have the ability to collect that information. so you reveal your sources and thotds. people then are able to prevent you from getting information. the third thing that we have a problem with, you can't punish lower level people for revealing classified information, and not punish senior people. >> right. >> and so they're facing a real dilemma in the obama administration. >> and she did sign that nondisclosure form. all right mr. secretary, sit right here. donald rumsfeld sticking around because he's getting into the app game where washington really is kind of a house of cards. we'll be right back. >> churchill solitaire.

deterrence has changed. normally, you're dealing with countries that want to defend real estate or they want to preserve their lives. and not be killed. you're dealing with people today who are -- want to attack the nation's state concept. the thing that's brought stability to the world. and second, people who are perfectly comfortable killing themselves. >> do you think proum is listening to his top military brass? >> i don't know because i'm not there. but, it's pretty clear he can't be. if you're unwilling to identify the problem, and call a spade a spade and say here's what the difficulty is, you've got a strand of that fate that is radicalized. the islamists, who are killing a great many of the people in their faith, as well as a lot of christians and jews. >> all right. we're going to take a quick time-out. we're going to play your card game coming up next, all right? >> winston churchill's card game. >> okay. >> here's here to talk about it. i've smoked a lot and quit a lot, but ended up nowhere.
