well, the candidates had tough words for each other but how did their messages resonate? our democratic strategist and the executive director of red alert politics are here. thank you for joining us after a long night. let's talk about the winners and losers after last night. first, let's start with you. >> i hate saying this. donald trump. he just wasn't. he was talked about on one network for a good portion of the debate. and then he was aired live on two other networks. the guy is a genius. the guy is a genius. and not only that, he knew that ted cruz would be on the defense during the entire debate. and guess what? he was. and ted cruz wins out in the

polls. >> i love that people said, maybe that was his strategy to begin with and it was not about the issues he brought up to begin with. so ron, what do you think? >> i think marco rubio won last night. his weakest point was immigration. he still came out okay on it but he was refreshing and calm. he had a good pace about him. i think he landed his punches when he needed to and spoke directly to evangelicals in iowa. >> you think? >> he spoke very directly to them. rand paul was a quick runner-up. he was last in the polls, got a ton of time, reached his constituency, i wouldn't be surprised to see both these guys finish better than their polling right now because they have a youth following and young people aren't polled in iowa. >> marco rubio was the most popular of the evening. what about the loser, do you think? >> ted cruz. this is a guy who knows how to debate very well. he got into a tiff with chris wallace which didn't make him look good.

and it sort of reminded people of the biggest criticisms, he doesn't get along with others and play well with others. listen, he's refined and can stay on message. he can respond to any sort of criticism, but he really needs to work on this. >> when he asked me the main question -- i think he was trying to be funny at that point. >> yeah, complaining about time, complaining about questions, nobody likes that. why don't these candidates get it? stop complaining about time. >> do presidents whine and complain? do presidents have to make excuses? ted cruz was the clear loser last night, rand paul saying, you're a hypocrite. you call us rhinos yet we are picking battles. he has zero allies. even among conservatives on the hill. >> which is ironic because from our polling numbers he does have

some support. we'll see what happens. real quickly, the undercard debate, winner or loser? >> carly won. rick santorum loser. even jim beat him, go jim. >> we appreciate it. see you back here. abby? so last night's debate was the last chance for the gop candidates to make their case before the iowa caucuses. and if social media was any indicator, there may be some surprises in store. for more on social media and what they had to say about last night's debate is "fox & friends" cohost clayton morris. twitter is a place to figure out how people are thinking about the debates. speaking of jim gilmore in the panel. he was trending last night. what are you hearing? >> and people are taking their hatred and love to twitter last night. we should mention donald trump was not in the room but dominated social media across google and twitter last night. but for the people who were in the room during the debate, ted cruz came out on top around the

conversation. these are people jumping on twitter and having a discussion around topics ted cruz was talking about, mainly immigration. marco rubio in second place with 20%. rand paul with 16%. rand paul got more time because donald trump was not in the room. but as you mentioned, heather, earlier marco rubio had one of the most talked about moments on twitter when he had this to say about bernie sanders. watch. >> bernie sanders is a socialist. i think bernie sanders is a good candidate for president of sweden. we don't want to be sweden. we want to be the united states of america. >> so that was one of the most talked about twitter exploding comments last night. and note he was talking about ted cruz having a rough night. perhaps this clash with chris wallace stood out. this was a close second to the sound byte we just showed you. >> the last questions have been rand, please attack ted. jeb, please attack ted.

let me just say this -- >> it is a debate, sir. >> well, no, a debate actually is a policy issue. but i will say this, gosh, if you guys ask one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage. >> yeah. so there you go. ted cruz coming in second with the most talked about moment on twitter last night for those comments. we'll show you a few more later in the show, but social media is the place where everyone loves to go vent. heather and abby? thank you so much, clayton. one person who was missing from the debate stage, donald trump. >> instead he held a rally for veterans just down the street from the debate. peter doocy is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. seven other top-tier candidates were greatietting grilled by me kelly. mike huckabee and rick santorum

were there with trump, making for an extraordinary site standing together. at one point donald trump rattled off a list of high-dollar donations to his veterans fund-raiser including a million bucks from his own checkbook later tweeting, quote, unbelievable night in iowa with our great veterans. we raised $6 million while the politicians talked, #gopdebate. trump didn't attend the gop debate because he was upset with fox news channel, but it does appear his feelings may have changed. >> and they have been very nice and wanted me to go and apologize and everything else. and they did apologize. once this started it's for our vets, there was nothing i could do. you know what, i don't know, is it for me personally a good thing, a bad thing, will i get more votes, will i get less votes votes? nobody knows. who the hell knows. >> we'll all know monday night

most. you have been in a unique position of running for president twit. and we hear from hillary clinton saying i don't want the debates, kind of laughing at the donald trump nomination. we know that's not necessarily the reality, though. in your assessment of this, who do you think democrats should fear the most? >> donald trump, there's no question about it. i mean, donald trump has appeal with the old reagan democrats. there's a new generation of them. and donald trump certainly, from my experience in talking to people, seems to be reaching them on whether or not he'll be able to actually complete the entire election without any major faux pas remains to be seen, but he shows a great resilien resilience. without trump in the race, it was interesting to see governor bush and how well he did during the debate. but trump is in the race, so that kind of changes the calculus for all the candidates. >> what do you say when you look at polls? there are a lot of people who

agree trump would be a really tough one for hillary clinton to go against. but the polls is where donald trump struggles at the moment to compare how cruz and rubio are doing against hillary clinton. trump doesn't always win against her in the polls. do you think that could change in a general election? >> look, the general election is going to be a classic. and if the republicans nominate trump, he probably has a chance to reach an electoratehat has a larger, broader bandwidth than the other candidate. watching the debate, i was impressed by how many of the candidates scored points with the audience simply by attacking hillary clinton. if you are going to be president of the united states, you have to talk about more than hillary clinton and tell people what you're going to do. and to his credit, one of the few people who seemed to follow that path was john kasich. i thought he was very

commendable and i don't know if he helped himself in iowa, but probably helped himself in new hampshire. >> let's get your predictions, iowa just days away and new hampshire shortly after. looking at the polls, who will end up winning both of those? and do you expect to see a dark horse potentially in somewhere like new hampshire, often known for having someone come up last minute? >> well, at this point, cruz has a slight edge in iowa, i believe. but trump could still win it. trump wins new hampshire, i believe. and as far as the democrats, that's a toss-up in iowa. and you get to new hampshire, sanders clearly is going to win new hampshire. the dark horse in the race with the republicans is keeping an eye on john kasich in new hampshire because, it's not that he's polling well, but his message of unity is, i think, resonating. and he also comes across as very

the moderators, but rubio gave an overall answer but he seemed very defensive. and it came at a time where the cruz campaign has taken down all their ads in iowa other than the rubio amnesty ad. so that exchange was how it played into the cruz ad unfortunately for rubio. >> so without donald trump, who did that benefit the most? >> i think to senator bush who had his best debate performance this campaign season. he wouldn't have to throw punches with donald trump. rand paul as well got a lot more air time and didn't have to defend himself from trump. no one looked like they were waiting for a bomb to go off on stage last night. >> so moving on trend to our next topic, another hot one seemed to be racial profiling. is it okay if it keeps the american people safe? listen to this. >> we need to stop allowing political correctness to dictate to kill us if we don't. >> when i'm president of the united states of america, we don't know who you are and we don't know why you're trying to come to the united states, you

are not going to get in. >> we need to deal with isis in the caliphate. you can't do that without the cooperation of the muslim world. because they're as threatened as we are. so i think it's important for us to be careful about the language we use, which is why i'm critical of donald trump. disparaging women, disparaging hispanics. that's not a sign of strength. making fun of disabled people? >> so jeb bush a little different than the rest of the candidates on that. what was your take on it? >> well, i think that what rubio and cruz in particular were getting at is a behavioral profiling that follows patterns of behavior, not necessarily racial profiling, but it is kind of true that we have a group of men going into a mosque by a radical islamic emom, then you want to profile the people. not because they are muslim but because they are taking lessons from the radical emom. i think the approach that rubio and cruz, and to a degree that bush was getting at a little bit, probably is the best approach for the republicans going forward. >> and who do you think

treat women like cattle. >> the consensus was it was a good night for rand paul. but the famous dial testing, marco rubio scored the biggest marks of the night with his criticisms of clinton. >> that is why hillary clinton cannot win this election. hillary clinton this week said barack obama would make a great supreme court justice. the guy who systematically violates the constitution of the supreme court? i don't think so. >> jeb bush had a better night than in other debates, not worried trump was going to steal his lunch money. and played the tough guy when asked if his attacks on marco rubio were damaging. >> i've seen polls where i have beaten hillary clinton pretty regularly. this is bean bag compared to what the hillary clinton hit machine is going to do to the republican nominee. >> while john kasich is a bit of an after-thought in the hawkeye state, he made it clear last night that new hampshire will be a different story. >> having been in new hampshire

and here in iowa, in new hampshire i just received the support of seven out of eight of the newspapers in that state because they see positive, they see unity, they see coming together and they see a record of change and a record of accomplishment. >> you know, i don't think you can say there was any clear winner last night. but i do think that a number of candidates helped themselves. and abby, in the closing moments of the iowa campaign, things always shift quite substantially when it comes to voter preference. so we'll find out -- the only poll that matters now and the caucuses is the one taken at 7:00 central time monday night. >> john roberts live in des moines, iowa, thank you. when republican voters head to the polls, national security is the most important issue in deciding their candidate. that's according to the latest fox news poll. so whose strategy worked best last night? the political panel is back with their picks, the executive director of the accountability project. and ron mayor is the editor of

red alert politics. welcome back. we'll go right to national security because obviously that's the number one issue this go-around. winners and losers from last night. >> i'm a democrat, so i don't agree with any of the strategies, let me be clear, but the one we fear the most is marco rubio. i think that he arctic laticula vision very clearly on national security issues. but, you know, there's a lot of fear mongering going on. and i think that's where i draw the line at marco rubio. close second would be, where is he, rand paul. just because, you know, again, i don't agree with him in particular, i think he's an isolationist, but he knows spending money on military does not necessarily mean we're safer. >> i agree that rubio came off very strong, but i think rand paul did win on foreign policy. because he provided contrasts. we needed contrasts in this debate. one of the more interesting points when talking about national security. whether or not you agree with him, you have to appreciate the

diversity he brings on the issue and asking, why do we want to bomb both sides in syria, both isis and assad? when you ask that, people are curious and that appeals to younger supporters. the clear loser with national security was donald trump, not only for not showing up, but then for basically acting like he's afraid of megyn kelly, afraid to face his peers. and the question is, someone who makes brash decisions, not consulting his advisers that quickly, is he really mentally mature enough to be president of the united states? >> good question. all right, let's move on to the economy because that's always a top issue with voters. >> i didn't hear anything about the economy last night. but i think -- this is a stretch here, rand paul. just because his entire campaign is based on spending. and he understands that the biggest cost is the defense budget. and that's his message. >> so i think rubio won because of his economic story. he retells it all the time. i still think it sounds fresh, which is great. i think the loser on the economy

was jeb bush. you want to know why? he said the youtube when talking about youtube. how can you be in the 21st century out there having a senior moment calling it the youtube. like a series of tubes? come on. >> he's trying. >> he did have a stronger night many people are saying than past debates. let's get to immigration. we have a sound bite with megyn kelly talking to marco rubio. >> i did not support amnesty. i said i do not support -- >> you said the path to citizenship is code to amnesty. >> it absolutely has been. >> the amendment you're talking about is 38 words. it didn't say a word about legalization. >> but the bill you were amending allowed citizenship. >> but the fact that each amendment didn't fix every problem didn't mean i supported the rest of the bill. >> this is one of the strongest exchanges of the night. quickly, who won this battle? >> that battle, very close, but

i think marco rubio won the battle even though his immigration plan is completely different than what it was before. and ted cruz is more in line with his reasoning true, but it is really technical. and that doesn't play well with voters. >> i think rubio won as well. but they both have changed their policy positions. but here's the thing, everyone knows rubio has changed his policy positions because he's honest. ted cruz is dishonest and said he hasn't changed when he has. and i think both megyn kelly's questioning and rand paul lit him up with this, saying he was hypocrite call, has he been honest with me the whole time or doing this double talk? >> very well said. thank you both for being here. we appreciate it. all right, heather. as you heard, we have been discussing one person missing from the debate stage, donald trump. instead, the front-runner held a rally for veterans just down the street. peter doocy is live in washington, d.c., with details.

he was not alone on the stage, right? >> reporter: he was not. but at one point trump read off a list last night of high-dollar donations to his veterans fund-raiser he held instead of the fox news debate because he was upset with the network. >> i didn't want to be here, i have to be honest. i wanted to be about five minutes away. but you have to stick up for your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. you have to do it. >> trump did say last night he had friendly conversations with fox news executives and it doesn't sound like he's going to have more issues with fox, at least in the near term. and trump wasn't alone on stage last night. while the seven other top-tier candidates got grilled by chris wallace and brett baier and megyn kelly, he was joined with rick santorum and mike huckabee. >> let me be very clear, rick santorum, donald trump and i may

voters decide. why is iowa so important and who has the potential to win it in other key winning states? >> the director for george w. bush and the chairman of the american union. thank you for being with us. >> thank you for having me. >> you said the iowa caucus is more important than ever this year. why is that? >> first of all, it was a great debate. the fox folks did a great job with the questions. a lot of great diversity of topics. iowa is as important as it's ever been. why? because the front-runner in the republican race, donald trump, actually has a chance to win iowa. in the last couple of cycles, the front-runner was dead man walking in iowa or that was the perception going into the race. so this year the front-runner could actually win. and the front-runner, it's more interesting, because ted cruz is right at his heels and there's a bunch of folks right behind ted

cruz. so it could be a photo finish on monday. >> and there are some polls that say 25% to 30% of those people who will head out in iowa will be new voters and trump has attracted a lot of those folks. we'll take a look at some of those polls you were mentioning. this is the latest cnn poll that came out last week, i believe, and you have trump here with 41% of the lead. cruz coming in with 19% in second place. but here's one you mentioned that was close. our next poll if we can bring that up, our next poll is from the quinnipiac poll. this one, yes, is close. trump 31%. cruz 29%. so in iowa, who knows what is going to happen, but what about iowa and new hampshire? >> well, it looks clearly like donald trump has the lead in new hampshire. so if ted cruz is able to pull off a win in iowa, it sure looks like trump is in the driver seat in new hampshire, although who knows. sometimes the iowa winner gets so much momentum that it shifts
