two-hour stage show at night, or the pre-show. >> there's the big debate, you're looking at it from last night in des moines, iowa. the biggest moment from last night's debate. >> how do you sum it up? fox correspondent john roberts. hey, john. >> brian and sandra, good morning. it's a big responsibility i take seriously. no question the overall tone of last night's debate was different, no personal insults being hurled around the stage. a lot of sharp exchanges but all of them on policy, so ted cruz did his best to fill the vacuum left by donald trump's absence. >> senator cruz, before we get to the issues, let's address the elephant not in the room tonight. donald trump has chosen not to attend this evening's presidential debate. what message do you think that sends to the voters of iowa? >> let me say i'm a maniac, and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly.

and ben, you're a terrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way -- >> it's not about donald trump. barack obama wants a mayor to be like the rest of the world. we don't want to be like the rest of the world. we want to be the united states of america. >> as expected, the debate became the ted cruz and marco rubio show, centering on which one was more centered on immigration. >> he told the people of florida, if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. when i ran in texas, i told the people in texas, if you elect me, i will lead the fight on amnesty. we both made identical promises. but when we came to washington, we made a different choice. >> you talked up the immigration policy. then you said on the issue of people here illegally, we can reach a compromise. then on the committee, you said,

i want to bring people out of the shadows. now you want to trump trump on immigration. >> trump trump on immigration. by the time rubio and cruz got through the immigration spat, the room hung thick with parliamentary procedure, which as he has done several times in the past, governor chris christie stepped forward to try to clear. >> i feel like i need -- i feel like i need a washington english dictionary converter, right? it's perfectly legal in this country to change your mind, but when you're a governor, you have to admit it. you can't hide behind parliamentary tricks. that's the difference and that's the kind of leader we need in the white house. stop the washington bull and let's get things done! >> if history is any guide, a lot could change between now and the monday caucuses. it tends to be very fluent here in iowa in the last 72 to 96 hours. will marco rubio continue to rise in the polls? will trump's absence last night hurt him? we will find out monday night. brian, peter? >> quick question. are you using a heater or is it

that nice down there? what happened? >> it's cold out this morning. it's probably 30 degrees. it's not quite as balmy as it was yesterday. but -- yeah, i got a heater. right here. >> i just thought he was a tough man. >> well done. appreciate it. >> thank you, john. >> what was the main difference last night? donald trump. even the way it started it was about donald trump, but overall it was not about donald trump. after the beginning, he was done. >> it became a debate about substance, and it really did focus a lot of back and forth between rubio and cruz on policy, but the focus a lot of times was about donald trump. in this particular debate, however, the focus shifted to the other side of the aisle. there was a lot more focus on clinton and bernie sanders. here's what they had to say. >> if i'm a nominee, i will unite this party and we will defeat hillary clinton and we will turn this country around once and for all after seven years of the disaster that is

barack obama. >> to get the information from hillary clinton, you need to get a subpoena from the fbi. >> for her convenience, she put america's secrets at risk for her convenience. she put american intelligence officers at risk for her convenience. when i take her on, i guarantee one thing. she will never get within 10 miles of the white house. the day for the clintons in public housing are over. >> i think bernie sanders is a good candidate for president -- of sweden. we don't want to be sweden. we want to be the united states of america. and hillary clinton lied to the families of those four brave americans who lost their life in benghazi. and anyone who lies to the families of americans who have died in the service of this country can never be commander in chief of the united states. >> some good exchange there, and also some of the big exchanges of the night were about the number one concern of the american voter which is keeping america safe. some real substance on that issue, and in particular, an

exchange between marco rubio and senator paul. you have to hear this. listen. >> radical muslims and radical islam is not just hate talk, it's hate action. they blow people up. look what they did in san bernardino. we must keep america safe from this threat, and yes, when i am president of the united states, there is someplace in this country where radical jihadists are threatening the united states. we will go after them and if we catch them alive, they are going to guantanamo. >> do you agree with that? we're going to close down mosques? >> i think it's a huge mistake to say we're going to close down mosques. but i don't think marco rubio can have it both ways. you can't be in favor of islam if you're not for border security. >> i do believe that people who are trying to come to the united states, this country has a right to know who they are and why they are coming.

>> i think overall two candidates benefited the most with donald trump not there, rand paul and jeb bush. i just think physically and in their voice, they seem much more relaxed. >> which is surprising, because the prediction was that it was going to benefit chris christie the most. that didn't exactly happen. we're going to talk to -- >> i also thought that the guy that got the most time and the numbers bared out, i felt like rubio was all over the debate and he was at 30 minutes 30 seconds. he got the most time. second was cruz just second behind. th and i didn't hear much from kasich. >> the bully wasn't in the room for rand and jeb, and i think they felt more free. a lot of elbows coming at rubio and cruz. they're both obviously very seasoned debaters. that exchange about immigration, chris christie also talked about

law enforcement versus immigration. we'll have him on the program later and ask about his take also. >> what do you think? who won, who lost, who was the biggest surprise? overall i thought it was a deeper conversation but it was also predictable. i felt like i could finish half of their sentences and conclusions to the same question. >> true, but don't you think it reflected the appetite or the sentiment of the american people? keep america safe, immigration here at home, isis. i think it really was reflective of what people were thinking about right now. >> and everyone was wondering where mr. donald trump was. he was down the street holding his own event on a stage which, by the way, he was later joined by a couple of the candidates, rick santorum, mike huckabee, but here's donald trump at his own rally in des moines. >> i didn't want to be here, i have to be honest. i wanted to be about five minutes away. you have to stick up for your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. [ cheers and applause ] >> you have to do it. >> evidently it was down to the

last minute whether he was going to appear or not. according to our own report on our website, roger ails had three brief conversations with donald trump leading up to this. trump turned around and said, i need $5 million for my foundation to appear and they said, we're not going to do that, so he went across the street. i think he knows he could have been there. >> he made that a big gamble, he made that choice. we don't have any sense how that played out so far. it was the elephant not in the room as meghan so aptly said to begin with, but the debate really moved on. so the question is, where are iowa voters? are they focused on trump and believe it was a good decision, or are they going to be frustrated that he effectively stepped away from the last opportunity to hear from him? >> the fox polling revealing that 30% of iowa caucus goers still undecided on their candidate, so last night was a big night. >> i don't believe that. they've had candidates there for over a year knocking on every

door, every deli, every diner. i'm out of d words. >> a lot of iowans are probably trying to hide. there are the junkies that following it, the activists that are into it, but if you're a moderate republican, really not political, you're just now popping your head up, which is why it really was a risk, potentially. >> did anyone change their mind last night? >> i think marco rubio was really strong as he always is, ted cruz had an opportunity to separate himself, but there was so many people coming at him, i think it was a wash. a guy like chris christie did good as well. >> dr. ben carson will be joining us, jeb bush, senator rand paul, chris christie, mike huckabee. brian, could we possibly have booked a few more? >> you sound like you're bragging. >> definitely a good show. we want to get a sense of how they think they did up against those other candidates, and how it was without donald.

bill reilly before the debate said it's not so much what they're saying about policies, how they're interacting with each other, it's how you look at people's stress in their voice. it's a very important message to people around you, and if you're a candidate, it's in the potential voters. >> and he can still show stress as can sarah palin. >> it's not about the vocal quality, how beautiful your voice is, how high or how low. the voice is like a mirror of your heart. >> and you saw jeb bush do what yesterday? >> so it was interesting to see that in previous events when he was attacking trump or when they were in a clash, you could see very high stress levels. this time it was the first time, i think, that when he was discussing trump or addressing trump indirectly, you could see he was completely calm, very low stress for the very first time since the bully wasn't in the room anymore. >> and he wasn't.

>> interestingly, since trump announced his boycott, there was no stress in his voice at all when he was attacking meghan kelly. but when he began to comment on his relationship with fox, there was stress. what does that reflect? the stakes are bigger. those are patterns we tend to see. >> you have another clip that shows rubio, i believe. >> let's take a look at ted cruz attacking marco rubio as it comes to amnesty. and this went on and on and on. >> you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes. ted, you worked for george w. bush's campaign. you helped design george w. bush's immigration policy. then when you got to the senate, you did an interview with cbs news, i wasn't even part of the video, where you said on the issue of people who are here illegally, we can reach a compromise. then on the committee you said, i can bring people out of the shadow. now you want to trump trump on

immigration. >> this is rubio first. i heard a higher pitch. >> it is a higher pitch, but with the same pitch, you can see at the very end his stress level is low, so it's not about the pitch, but it's about the topic or what is it that he was getting into. in the beginning you saw that when he was getting into the more general attack at cruz, you could see how his stress went from an easy to really intense. it was kind of a generalized attack. it wasn't on something specific with something about very much in the past, and it's interesting to see that because this kind of attack in this kind of stress show that there is more of -- i want to say more of a personal threat. he may feel more threatened by cruz on this topic. >> and this is critically important because he's sending a very subtle message. it's subconscious to us but we're actually getting that note. you saw a little arrow go back and forth like a gas tank. it went to a very intense stress level because he sees him as a

threat. but when he went into the argument at the end, the stress level went down. >> let's go to the other side of it. this is going to be ted cruz answering this call. >> you know, i like marco. he's very charming, he's very smooth. but the facts are simple. when he ran for election in the state of florida, he told the people of florida, if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. when i ran in texas, i told the people of texas, if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. we both made the identical promises. but when we came to washington, we made a different choice. >> but that's where the debate happened. you saw it dropped toward the end. >> exactly. so on that note, when you see in the very beginning when he begins only to recount what happened, his stress is not very high, but you see a certain buildup. and you see the buildup really reaches the peak in this piece when he was talking about amnes amnesty, something he really cares about. when he speaks about rubio, he's

not really stressed, so for him, this attack is not personal. one of the things you can learn from that -- >> it is. >> it is and it isn't. that's very interesting. from what we saw, people who see the other person as a threat are much more likely to be stressed in a personal attack. people who don't see the other person as a threat are much more likely to show low stress when they talk about the other person. you see here that cruz does not get stressed when he mentions rubio. so you can learn about how he really sees -- >> these are important tools. we're sending this out to the candidates. they can see how their voice modulates and sends conscious messages out, but they can deal with the stress of being in the. >> thanks, you guys. the benefit, again, it builds awareness of what you're saying to the world even if it's not your words, it's your voice

detour. drivers being cautioned to drive slowly in that area. no word yet on when the road will be repaired. a bank branch manager making a million-dollar move. watch as a masked man walks up to the bank in raleigh, north carolina. the man sees what's about to happen. he pulled the door shut. then the alleged robber banged on the door with a gun saying, let me in. the manager was not having that, and the suspect ran off but has not been caught. a controversial move caught on camera. watch as this fan appears to trip an opposing high school cheerleader in the middle of the basketball court. did you see that? well, she lost her coaching and teaching job after that in southern tennessee after the video came out, however, the cheerleader's father said she was just trying to keep her daughter's team on her side of the court. they have not commented on that incident.

>> have you ever tripped a cheerleader, maria? >> no, absolutely not. >> what did i say? case in point. >> she once tripped someone in the hallway. >> different story. let's go ahead and take a look at the weather conditions across the country, because we do want to talk about the warming trend that's in place in parts of the plains. we're looking at temperatures in the 40s, 30s and even into the 20s. the 20s isn't that warm in places like kansas city, but as we head into the afternoon hours, take a look at what happens. we're continuing to see those temperatures climbing and you could be in the 60s in places like kansas city and in the 70s very widespread and in portions of texas. warmer temperatures across the plains and that could be continuing into the weekend. temperatures across the great lakes staying chilly-like, 20s and 30s forecast. also along the great lakes and the appalachians, you are looking at snow showers later

right? 6 million. we have outside a list of the organizations and folks that are going to be getting this money. we're going to divide it up and they're going to get a lot of money, everybody is going to fwet a lget a lot of money. >> across town at the fox news debate, though, the scandal at the veteran affairs department was part of the conversation with jeb bush declaring that fixing the va should be the first job of the next president. >> giving out $140 million of bonuses to veterans department employees, i will make sure that we fire the sheer incompetence inside the department of veterans affairs and we'll give veterans a choice card so they don't have to travel hours and hours for care if they want to go to their private provider. >> and trump in his event was also joined last night by the last two winners of the iowa caucuses, rick santorum and mike huckabee, which made quite a sight, because those two are still running for president but they still stood behind the podium with trump's name on it

in big, bold letters. >> those are the last two winners of the iowa caucuses, and after going on their debate, they showed up on donald trump's event. meanwhile, you heard we were talking about the va. >> and jeb bush laid out a very specific plan. in fact, last night he said it is his first duty if elected president to fix the va. what do you make of his plan? >> jeb bush, i think he really nailed it. he talked about accountability, firing employees, something we talked about a lot on the show. >> you can't, though. >> you can't, but he would be the first civil force necessary for that kind of accountability. he said to fix it you need choice. you need the ability for the veteran to get help from the va or elsewhere. jeb bush was the only one who answered it -- his answer was very similar to almost all the candidates. from rubio to rand to carson to

cruz, they're all very similar, accountability and choice. and i think that's a great contrast to bernie sanders and hillary clinton who say more government, more spending. >> the thing is, can they do it? some things will be prohibited. does this have to be a piece of legislation put on their desk? >> that legislation has already passed the house. it's pending in the senate and could get a vote. you get a new commander in chief who is willing to sign that piece of legislation into law, now you have the ability to fire those crony employees, which is all veterans really want. >> i wish we could get jeb bush to talk specifically about it. he's coming up at 7:30 this morning. we'll be able to have this very conversation with him and press him on more specifics of that plan. coming up, the biggest slams of the night went to a candidate not even standing on the stage. and guess what? it wasn't donald trump. >> let me tell you who is not qualified to be president of the united states, chris.

now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way -- >> with donald trump off the stage last night, the spotlight fell squarely on the ted cruz/marco rubio feud. each of them trying to paint the other as a flip-flopping weakling on immigration. >> but you went -- >> i did not support amnesty. >> you said more than that. you said earned path to citizenship is a path to amnesty. >> it is. >> the amendment is 38 words, i didn't say a word about legalization. >> but the bill -- but the bill you're amending allowed citizenship and immigration. >> but the fact that it didn't fix every problem didn't mean that i supported the rest of the bill. >> reporter: and while donald trump may have hoped that by not taking center stage the rest of the candidates would engage in a circular firing squad, a certain amount of time was spent attacking the presumed

democratic nominee. >> if i'm the nominee, i will unite the party and we will defeat hillary clinton and we'll turn this country around once and for all after seven years of the disaster that is barack obama. >> to get the information from hillary clinton you need to get a subpoena from the fbi. she put america's secrets at risk for her convenience. she put american intelligence officers at risk for her convenience. when i take her on, i guarantee you one thing. she will never get within ten miles of the white house. the days for the clinton in public housing are over. >> reporter: the new jersey governor has a way of putting things, doesn't he? i think a number benefited from the extra oxygen that was available in the room last night. in particular, jeb bush who was able to do his favorite thing last night, talk at length about policy without insulting being hurled in his face. >> john, thank you. >> yeah, i mean it was more contemplative and i thought the guy that benefited the most was

rand paul. although the nsa and what he wants to do in terms of isis, in terms of -- he differs from everyone on the stage. but he was true to his school. he took his time. went back. then you had a debate, much like you would see in thought maybe a college debate club. >> yeah. even trump -- >> the way it was before, he was trying to win an argument, a argument centered around isis. with 40% of voters, up to a third of voters undecided -- >> i don't agree with that. iowa, six out of every ten have already made up their mind? four of every ten -- >> one reason they haven't made up their mind they can't decide which candidate is best to fight isis. this is a huge point in the debate last night. here's the candidates. >> i believe that the world is a safer and a better place when america is the strongest power in the world. i believe only with a strong america will we defeat this radical group isis. >> i will apologize to nobody for the vigorousness that i will fight terrorism, hunt down isis

and utterly and completely 'stro isis. >> the threat is islamic terrorism. we need to focus our energies there. not the broad blanket kind of statements. >> we need to develop a strategy together to take on isis. every place that it is around the world. >> we have to destroy them on the ground, in the air and with our friends in the arab world and our friends in europe. >> there's some place in this country where radical jihadists are planning to attack the united states we will go after them wherever they are. if we capture them alive they're going to guantanamo. >> they're not talking hyperbole. the front page of "the new york times" and the big question after jennifer griffin's pentagon, it's all hands on deck. we're not doing enough to stop isis is the headline as secretary ash carter was told, don't travel. we need to come one a plan to fight isis. really? you look at libya and start saying we don't have enough people on the ground in iraq and

syria as if it happened yesterday. >> we have been containing them for a long time. they have continued to grow. if one outlier was of course rand paul who is closer to barack obama on some of a restrained foreign policy. but a lot of republicans talking about the need to crush isis. >> i would say this. then i want your take on this. every time ted cruz brings up carpet bombing isis he sounds naive, when it comes to military warfare. no military person looks at isis and says we're going to bomb them like we did the iraqis in 1993. >> it's a desire to project strength. it's always more -- >> but you won't see them in formation, never in one area. you have to use laser focus. that's not how we do. >> brian didn't like what ted cruz had to say on that. but frank luntz sat down with his focus groupon the gop

candidates' focus. here it is. >> how many of you support marco rubio? three of you. how many are going home most likely to vote for rubio, raise your hands. that's the impact of a single debate. give me a word or phrase to describe rubio. >> organized. >> confident. >> presidential. >> powerful. >> prepared. >> credible. >> game changer. >> electable. >> attractive opportunist. >> you have to explain to the american people, you dialed two hours with, what did you see? >> i think he was honest, believable. he didn't berate the other candidates on the stage. he was positive. and he kind of put hillary in her spot as far as computers and benghazi. >> you're the youngest person in this room. were you able to vote in the last election? >> yes, i was. >> so this will be your second time. >> yes. >> as a 22-year-old, is it because rubio is younger than the other candidates? what attracts you to him? >> no, it's not because he's

younger, but aspirational. you know when he's going to do something it's what he says. he's honest. he seems to have a vision for this country. >> yeah, watching that live it was interesting to see the overwhelming response. i thought rubio did well. i wasn't prepared for that. >> well, charles krauthammer did his wrap and he said something as insightful as myself, rubio didn't have the best night tonight, it was his worst debate. >> we asked you to e-mail in or go on the facebook page and tell us who you thought performed and did the best last night. brittany said, rubio and cruz both presented their ideas and solutions well. >> and one said rand paul had a much deserved chance to speak and he's the most conservative and knowledgeable of all the candidates. >> so that's some of your opinions. we'll get through them, we're working on that right now. let's talk about what was happening across town.

at the exact time, despite three overtures from fox news, decided i am not coming to the debate. he wanted reportedly between 5 and $6 million of a donation to his foundation that would eventually go to wounded warriors he said. >> he tweeted out at the end of the night that he raised $6 million for this. >> which was ultimately raised toward his foundation that will be given out to groups yet to be named. it was interesting that two -- other gop presidential candidates, mike huckabee and rick santorum also showed up at the event after the first debate. and showed up with him on stage as well. so a very interesting dynamic of donald trump doing his own thing after being a no show. other candidates showing up and very interesting how the voters of iowa react to that. >> there's a debate next week, is donald trump going to that? did this work for him? we'll find out two things. did the polls work, we'll find out on monday. and did donald trump pay the price or get a boost from not

tested positive for lead poisoning throughout the state. with levels higher than those found in flint in fact. one of the biggest culprits, lead based paint in older homes. in flint the water quality forced a state of emergency with thousands of children suffering from lead poisoning there and calls for governor snyder to step down. to oregon video released by fbi showing the shooting death of lavoy finicum by federal agents. in this video, you can see finicum get out of the vehicle with his hands up. before officials say that he reached for a loaded gun in his pocket before being shot and killed. he was part of an armed occupation at an oregon wildlife refuge, protesting federal land policies. the protest leader and seven others have been arrested. finally a super big mistake by the super bowl grounds crew. they initially painted both end zones with broncos colors and the team logos should have been painted of course for the carolina panthers. here's a closer look.

all right. there was some heated moments at last night's debate. which one resonated the most? we have three new sound bites, so let's begin with rand paul. do you think he had a good night first off? >> i think he had the best night he's had so far in the debate but i don't think it was enough. >> here he is talking about probably the thing that separates him the most. that is on the nsa data collection to stop terrorists. listen. >> the bulk collection of your phone data, the invasion of your privacy did not stop one terrorist attack. i don't think you have to give up your liberty for a false sense of security. when we look at the bulk collection the court has looked at this and the court declared it to be illegal. if we want to collect the records of terrorists, let's do it the old fashied way. let's use the fourth amendment. let's put a name on a warrant. let's ask a judge for it. let's respect the history of the

country. >> we saw the independents stayed the highest throughout that. and we lost some democratic support. but both were higher than the republican line. >> it was interesting to me. i mean, folks gave him a b-plus overall. i thought this was an old argument. but he had two standout moments in debate and of this one of them. >> and chris christie very confident, he's the blunt talk tore make a difference. here he was talking about law enforcement and cracking down on the enemy. here's governor christie. >> barack obama has made law enforcement the enemy. hillary clinton has made law enforcement the enemy. they're not supporting our law enforcement officer, it's making everybody nervous to get out of their cars. if you're a law enforcement officer it's making people nervous to go to law enforcement. as president, i will support law enforcement and we will stop radical terrorist attacks in this country by supporting our intelligence community and our law enforcement community. >> pro cop, anti-cop? >> it really worked. it was a-plus across the board what we heard from folks they're

a little tired of everybody criticizing law enforcement. people's number one concern right now is safety. they love he was talking about it and they like that he was talking about -- that he was talking about defeating isis. >> a-plus. i found it depressing that the blue line was so low, when talking about law enforcement. what we're dealing with here in the country, perhaps. meanwhile, ted cruz opened up four minutes in as the timekeeper says out of the open. here he is, here he is, ted cruz coming out. talking about donald trump and essentially he was saying about donald trump, you know, he tends to get a little bit personal. look at how he registered. when he came out and he says, you're fat, you're ugly, i'm a maniac. he got a "b" on that. >> people laughed. even democrats laughed. that was the only time we saw the democrats respond in this kind of way. he had a great opener but that was the high point of his night according to the voters. >> he got the second most time.

answers from last night. >> radical muslims and radical islam is not just hate talk, but hate action. they blow people up. look what they did in san bernardino. >> we must keep america safe from the threat and yes when i'm president of the united states, if there's a place in the country that radical jihadists are planning to attack the united states, we'll go after them and if we capture them alive they're going the guantanamo. >> is that fair, we'll close down mosques or diners -- >> it's a huge mistake to close down mosques. this is where i had my disagree with senator rubio. i don't think marco can have it both ways. you can't defend us against radical islam if you're not for border security. >> i do believe that people who are trying to come to the united states, this country has a right to know who they are and why they're coming. >> all right. so chime in on that conversation. tell us what you think about the

about how we create a strategy to destroy isis and to focus on the things that people are concerned about here. >> well, absolutely. governor, last night a lot of talk about destroying isis. you had this to say. i'll have you react. >> the caliphate of isis has to be destroyed. which means need to arm directly the kurds, embed our troops with the iraqi military, re-engage with the sunny -- sunni tribal leaders and get them off the backs of them once and for all. >> i know there's rules of engagement. lawyers on your back are the things you don't want. but the devil's in the details. what would you do to loosen the rules of engagement to unleash our war fighters? >> well, first of all, revoke the memorandums of understanding that make this a law enforcement exercise. the united states military will always adhere to the standards of warfare that are accepted by the world. but we shouldn't have additional

conditions. for example, it takes three levels of approvals to get ordnances to drop. less than half of the sorties that go out drop their ordnances. that's ridiculous. it's endangering the pilots and endangerers our troops. the troops desperately want to be able to do what they do best which is to wind decisively. >> people are talking about the specific plan that you laid out the fix the v.a. system in this country. in fact, you said last night it will be your priority as president to fix the v.a. system. we have been chatting about it this morning. what's the reaction that you're getting to that? >> well, in every town hall meeting it comes up. veterans are angry and disgusted by the lack of progress that has taken place. so i feel compelled to act out to talk about this. pete's been actively involved in this.

i have gotten advice from good people that know about it. i have laid out a detailed plan. i know we can fix this. and the congress will support any effort by a president that will take care of our veterans. i'm totally convinced of that. >> you know, before the whole thing started and it became clear that you were going to get in and you actually got n everyone said let's -- don't go with the bush name. don't make it seem like a dynasty and now last night in my opinion, you seem to be embracing your last name more and saying, you know, for better or for worse this is who i am. in what respect do you think you might have changed once the game started and that's to get this nomination? >> well, it isn't for better or for worse, it's for better. i'm totally blessed when i woke up 62 years ago in midland, texas, and there was my mom and totally blessed to be the son of george h.w. bush and the brother of george w. bush. i love them and i'm proud of my family. and i also know at the same time

people want to know what's in my heart, what are my ideas, what kind of skills of leadership do i have. i don't find that at a conflict at all. the more people hear me, the more they understand i'm totally comfortable in my own skin. >> here we are a couple of days from the caucuses. any predictions for us? where do you feel you'll be coming out of caucus night in iowa? >> better than expected and raring to go to the other states. you know, south carolina and new hampshire and nevada in february. and then we start with the selection of delegates. frankly, you know, this is a long haul process. >> did you have any favorite moments last night? >> you know, i thought it was -- the exchange with marco rubio was a good exchange in that i got the last word in about the fact you can't cut and run. you should continue to fight through it, and i thought that was an important moment of debate. i think it's also important to talk about how republicans need to believe in a positive

aspirational message. our philosophy is the winning one for many people and right now, we're pushing people away when we need to bring them to our cause. >> governor, especially when it came to immigration i think this was your -- this is what you're referring to. sometimes you have to be willing to lose the primary in order to win the general. is that what's happening? >> no, look, i think you have to be consistent with your views. that's the point. the point is that you've got to believe what you believe and persuade people towards your cause. you can't cut and run whenever the pressure mounts. if it's hard to run, imagine what it will be like to be president if you're worried about how people think of things. >> impossible to kick 12 million people out of the country and has to be a pathway to citizenship, right? >> no path to legal status is what i've advocated. that's what i have been advocating in the book i wrote and i think that's the fair, conservative approach to this. is to have an extended period of time where people earn legal status. they don't cut in line with

he is accused of doing horrible things but this morning, two very important clues into these men's escape. let's take a look at clue number one. it's a woman, 44-year-old nooshafarin ravaghi. she was an english as a second language teacher here at the santa ana jail and is said to have developed a relationship with one of the them, hossein nayeri. both nayeri and the teacher are persian and according to officials shared a special bond. police say she's admitted to giving the inmates maps but has denied providing them with any physical tools. police do believe that hossein nayeri, jonathan tieu and bac duong did have outside help, help that give them the physical tools needed to cut through so much metal to be able to get out of the jail. meanwhile, police say ravaghi is talking and the maps may have included images from google earth. there's also new information on a van that the three inmates may be living in.

it's the white gmc savannah utility van that was stolen in los angeles on saturday. the van was for sale and police believe duong took it for a test drive and then stole it. now, the van has paper license plates, although they may have been removed. police say they believe the three guys are still together. and are living in that van. they're really asking everyone in southern california to keep their eyes out and call police if they see them. these guys are armed, they are dangerous. and according to the charges they were facing in jail they are very, very cruel human being. that's the latest from santa ana. well, coming up, ben carson taking advantage of the vacuum that donald trump left behind. >> i'm the only one on this stage with no political title. you're not going to hear a lot of polished, political speech from me. but you will hear the truth.

never been done before. and we are in a situation right now in our country that we have never been in before. >> wow. he's right. on that debate stage, dr. ben carson said he had more late night calls, making more life and death decisions and no one can argue with him, which makes him most qualified to be president is that true? >> joining us live from des moines is dr. ben carson. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> how did it go for you last night? >> i think it went well. you know, i probably had the least time to speak, but perhaps had the most to say. and it's important to get messages out and i think the forum last night was more conducive than some of the others had been. >> one would think with the absence of donald trump unexpectedly, you know, up until a few days ago he was supposed to have been on the stage. it would have been a bigger opportunity for you. did you feel it was?

>> it was a bigger opportunity because when he's there he tends to be the focus. gets the plurality of questions. and, you know, i do think that at some point you need to readjust some of the formats and actually have a clock and time the amount of time that people talk. because just someone mentions your name, you get, you know, twice as much time or three times as much time. that really doesn't make a lot of sense because we have such important issues that really need to be dealt with. and we've gotten more into a coliseum type atmosphere where ancient rome was collapsing, everyone wanted to be entertained rather than deal with the issues collapsing their society. >> you had 6 minutes and 11 seconds. marco rubio had the most with 13 minutes and 31 seconds. dr. ben carson, you feel as though your ground game is as good if not better than anybody

else's. tell me about the foundation you led in aiowa and how the polls might be wong about the results. >> well, we have a good ground game. hundreds and hundreds of volunteers all over the place. a lot of peopling are to be caucusing for us and the enthusiasm is just over the top. you know, particularly after the tragedy that we suffered. people have accepted the braden effect, caring about other people. caring about how other people and just the intensity of what's being done because they know how important this election is. so i think that the movement -- the movement is massive and i think everybody is going to be quite shocked on tuesday morning. >> well, dr. carson, last night a lot of discussion about immigration. muslim immigration. you talk all the time about political correctness and the poison that is political correctness. you talk about some of the answer about being a teddy roosevelt policy. you talked about this last night. what does that mean? what is a teddy roosevelt policy

to immigration? >> well, roosevelt was very open to immigration, but you know, in the early 1900. he said we are a nation of immigrants. we cannot survive without immigrants. and everybody is welcome from any nation, religion or race, but they must want to be americans. they must want to be inculcated into our culture, not bring some other thing with them. and that's the problem with political correctness. the p.c. police say every culture and every ideology is okay and we can bring all of those things in here. that's not true. if we want to continue the american way. >> all right. dr. ben carson, nice job last night. i know that's behind you and looking forward to monday. i know you're working hard throughout the day. thank you. >> thank you. it's true, roosevelt talked

[ applause ] >> and that was the start of the cruz/rubio show last night. the two battle to finish above the over on monday. rubio rising in the polls. the sharpest exchanges caoming over immigration and which one is the biggest flip-flopper. >> when he ran for election in the state of florida, he said if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. when i ran in texas, i told the people of texas if you elect me i will lead the fight against amnesty. we made the identical promises but when we came to washington we made a different choice. >> you have been willing to say door anything in order to get votes. you helped to design george w. bush's immigration policy and then you did an interview with cbs news and you said on the issue of people here illegally we can reach a compromise and in the committee you said i want to bring people out of the shadows. now, you want to trump trump on immigration. >> reporter: what he sort of

characterized a double speak which is too much for chris christie who insisted that such gobbledygook is why voters should nominate a governor as a president. >> i feel like i need a washington english dictionary converter. it is perfectly legal to change your mind, but when you're a governor, you have to admit it. you can't hide behind parliamentary tricks. that's the difference. that's the kind of leader we need in the white house. let's stop the washington bull and get things done. >> certainly with donald trump out of the arena last night there was a lot more oxygen for all of the other candidates who got to make their points forcefully. than maybe they have in the past. we talked to governor christie and he said it's easier when somebody not in your face all the time. will it make a difference? one more poll coming out from the des moines register on saturday. but the big one is monday night with the iowa caucuses. >> john, thank you. >> you're right. no trump, but cruz versus rubio,

and hillary clinton lied to the families of those four brave americans who lost their life in benghazi and anyone who lies to the families of americans who have died in the service of this country can never be commander in chief of the united states. >> and that was a lot of the focus yesterday, bring -- and because it's friday, geraldo rivera. good morning. you took in the entire debate last night. >> i did. >> you know it's a consequential debate. let's pick up on the attacks on hillary clinton and bernie sanders to a degree. were they effective? >> when i hear chris christie saying that hillary clinton is not going to be allowed within ten miles of the white house i say shut up. she's not going to be -- what are you going to do? it was a bullying kind of reminiscent of the old chris christie. i didn't like it at all. i thought the two big winner, donald trump was a big winner. i thought the debate without him was and undercard debate and the other winner i thought was megyn kelly. we don't want to be the news, we want to report the news.

the fact she was so much in the grinder there and maintained her dignity, her poise. her professionalism. i thought she did a spectacular job. i'm sorry this happened, this was as i told my friend sean hannity when it happened i thought it was a bar fight between the two brothers and then the bar keeper is sweeping up the glass and mama is paying the bail, you'll look back at the fight between our boss and the network, what was that about? it was hubris and pride. very unfortunate but i think the ratings will show that trump trumped everybody again. >> so interesting that you said. i'm surprised to hear you say that. i thought the debate where they addressed trump situation, i thought the debate was very interesting. >> if you cared about the people who were saying it. if you cared who -- or was it clear to many people including this particular viewer that the person who was going to have the republican nomination was three

miles away with a bunch of veterans, god bless them and he made 6 million bucks. not like he went there and bombed. he raised $6 million, a million of his own, to get the 22 vet -- to give to the 22 veterans organizations who's going to fault that? >> megyn kelly did fantastic last night. even setting aside trump and the veterans rally which some would say, you know, of course it's great to raise money for veterans but it was a convenient excuse or opportunity once he decided not to attend the debate, who else would you say benefited? cruz or rubio, who came out with a more plausible? >> i'm glad you asked me that, major, because i remember the irony i felt in 2008 when the first woman who had a viable chance to be president was defeated by the first black man. and i said, how ironic that the two historic firsts could not coexist. now i look at -- jump cut now to 2016 and for first time you have a latino candidate with the viable shot at the nomination.

last night's big debate marked the final before the iowa caucus and the return of kentucky senator rand paul to the main event. who wasted no time delving into the issues and confronting the competition. >> what's particularly insulting though is he's the king of saying oh, you're for amnesty. everybody for amnesty except or the ted cruz but it's a falseness. that's an authenticity problem that everybody he knows is not as perfect as him because we're all for amnesty. i was for legalization. i think frankly if you have border security, you can have legalization. so was ted, but now he says it wasn't so. that's not true. >> go ahead, sir. >> and ted cruz disagreed with that. here's how it went down with kentucky senator, who's also

running for election there, rand paul. you went out on a limb a little bit and you said, listen, i'm for -- you are for legalization for the ten to 12 to 14 million that are here. does it bother that ted cruz seems to have both sides of the fence on that? >> well, you know, he was always for this as well. we had the same position when the bill came up. i guess the problem with his authenticity is that he's now saying oh, he was never for amnesty. well, i'm not for amnesty either but i think we've dumbed down the debate when we start pointing fingers and saying oh, they're for amnesty, this and that. what i'm for is border security. secure the border first and then find a way to maybe give work visas or some way of accommodating the people who are here. but it's not amnesty, but i think ted wants to have it both ways but he wants to accuse everybody of not being as pure as he is, but i think he's creating a false narrative.

>> you have been in the senate with both senator cruz and rubio. there was a lot of finger pointing on authenticity. does one -- above the two of them, has one been more consistent on immigration or do you think they've both changed their position? >> thing's the interesting thing, you know, rubio has been for a pathway to citizenship. and now he's backing away from that. ted had always been for legalizing those who are here and now he's backing away from that. so i think in both instances they're backing away from something they had previously been for. and i think what really gets to the heart of the matter is whether or not you're authentic. even on the ethanol issue, you know, ted and i have been not in favor of the mandate. ted now has sort of backed away from that position. he's kind of for the mandate continuing but he also said last night that he's for for getting rid of the blend wall, and that's my bill. the question i'm asking, hey, ted, how come you haven't cosponsored my bill that does exactly that?

so i think he's -- he easily deas but isn't following through with being authentic about it. >> senator paul, another big moment on the stage for you last night was talking about drug addiction and tackling that problem as well. drug crimes and incarceration. >> drug issue is equal between white and black, but three out of four people in prison are black or brown. i think something has to change. i think it's been something that our party needs to be part of and i have been big on criminal justice reform. >> the gop needs to do something, so what is your plan? >> well, you know, i cosponsor a bill with chuck grassley and mike lee to try to have more reasonable sentences. i don't think you should go to jail for 15 years for drug use. i think if there's going to be a punishment it needs to be proportional to the crime. this is another area where ted has been on both sides of the issue. ted used to be for it and now he's opposed to criminal justice

reform as well. so i think it is a way to show that we have compassion for people who are down on their luck, live in poverty. when you look at arrest rates the arrest rates are much higher in urban areas. so african-american communities are being decimated by this. when you look at drug usage rates, whites and blacks use drugs about the same rate, but blacks are really suffering from the war on drugs. >> yeah. we are talking about that. i think on both sides you might be able to get something bipartisan going. because the president seems to be on that page too. senator, i have to bring it to the thing where you separated yourself. i think by all accounts you had a great night last night. i think you have to feel good about it. but i want to ask you your vision of the nsa and what we should be doing when it comes to mosques. ray kelly, mayor bloomberg, they were for putting people in the mosque, to put an ear on the ground to find out what's going on in there. you're not for that.

why? >> we shouldn't base our laws on religion or on examination of individual religions. i do believe an investigation of individuals and so when there's suspicion of an individual or probable cause, i'm all for investigating individuals but i'm not for a blanket statement that we're going to investigate a religion or a mosque. >> i can understand where you're coming from, but i would say this. if radical islam oftentimes the thoughts, beliefs and plans are hatched inside mosques, we don't know what we don't know, would you want to be proactive? >> well, see, i think we're talking around each other a little bit because i'm for targeting individuals who are possible terrorists for whom we have suspicion, wherever they are. i'm just not for targeting mosques or targeting religion in general. i'm for going -- it's the same sort of question of the nsa. it's not that i'm against looking at the records of terrorists. i want us to look at all of the

records of terrorists. i just don't want to do it indiscriminately where we look at everybody in boston's records. so i wouldn't say we're not going to investigate mosques in america, but i would say we're not going to limit police from investigating individuals wherever they go. >> the president has gone so faer as to take that to the -- so far as to say we're not going to call it radical islam. would you still call it that, and say this is radical islam and we have to identify and call it as such? >> yeah, without question, if you don't name the enemy you can't defeat the enemy. it's an aberration of the islam faith. if you don't name it, we'll never defeat it and my point in the middle east all along is when we toppled secular dictators we have gotten more radical islam. >> all right, senator, thanks for joining us bright and early this morning.

activity, to do some proactive policing where do you stand on that as it relates to civil rights? >> well, listen, we have to -- we have to use the law and the constitution appropriately. we can do it. i did it for seven years as a federal prosecutor. when you have probable cause to go after someone you do it. you can be aggressive in doing it. we did it in new jersey. we intervened in two major terrorism plots that we stopped because we used intelligence, we used law enforcement. we did it under the constitution. you can do it. you just need someone who knows how to do it. i did it for seven years. i will do it as president of the united states. there is no one on that stage who is better prepared to keep americans safe and secure than i am. >> governor christie, huge debate here, how you treat the war with radical islamists, a criminal action or war itself? and on individuals you can understand you don't want them profiling, because of bigotry or

racism, so seeing something, saying something is good. how do you narrow the scope without having a level of profiling or the ability to say, hey, this group of people might be more likely, therefore, we'll target some resources there whether it's mosques or individuals who inthave express sentiments in favor of islam? >> there's not the what i that the professional law enforcement folks do it. the fact is we get intelligence, we follow that intelligence, we develop a human sources and we use electronics to do intelligence. you're not going to target people. you're not putting listening devices in every mosque. that's not the way it works. i have done it for seven years. we done it effectively in the bush administration, to keep america safe. no one will be more aggressive on this than i will. but we know how to do this under the law. you don't throw out the tools. you make sure you use them the right way. we will use them the right way aggressively and we will stop

terrorist acts in this country. >> as you did in my debate on fox business network, you chose to focus on -- your attacks on hillary clinton last night. it was effective for you before. you went after her again. you took her on, said she won't get within ten miles of the white house if you're elected president. was this effective? >> well, we'll see over the long haul, but it's what i believe in my heart. i mean, the fact is that i think hillary clinton would be a disaster for this country. and i think that we as republicans need to focus on that. and not the petty disagreements that they get engaged in up on that stage. i wasn't getting dragged into the back and forth. we need to focus on who's the most effective, tested person to take on hillary clinton and win this white house. and i know i'm the person to do it. >> by the way, the ending to your comment there was -- as you said on the stage last night, governor, the days of the clintons in public housing are over. that's certainly getting a lot of play this morning. >> and government --

down the street. >> the governor joins us live from des moines this morning. governor mike huckabee. thank you. >> hey, governor. >> delighted to be here. thank you. >> well, you raised some eyebrows after being in the first debate, showing up on other networks on stage with another -- two other republican candidate, namely donald trump. why did you show up? >> well, you know, i offered to take that empty podium at the second debate and i didn't get that slot. i thought i have nothing going at 8:00, let's support the veterans. i thought it was a great event. it wasn't about donald trump it was about the veterans. there was an electrifying speaker last night. a gentleman named john wayne walding, a green beret. he lost a leg in combat, he was dynamic in saying that when veterans come back, they want to hear two words -- thank you. and it was a powerful reminder of what we owe the people who serve us in uniform. i was delighted to be a part of that. >> well, governor, so this was -- it was more about the

veterans. more about the veterans, if it was just donald trump at an event you would not have gone over there? >> well, i wouldn't have gone to a donald trump rally if the it was for his political campaign, of course not. but i thought it was gracious of him to invite the other candidates to be part of it. he was a gracious host and he treated us beautifully. and again, it was about the veterans and he didn't make it about his campaign. he spoke really very short brief time. and i thought it was a great opportunity to show that even though we are competitors in the presidential race, when it comes to supporting the people who keep us free, we're colleagues on the same page. >> all right. governor, so iowa has been a key state for you in the past. here we are, what's the plan? >> well, i don't know of a short cut to winning the iowa caucus and having done it before, and not just winning it, but i still have the record for the most votes in the history of the iowa

caucus. well, here's how i did it. i got outspent 15 to 1, most people thought we didn't have a shot, but we worked, went to every county. we met with people, whether it was five people or 500 people. when it came caucus night, we won. if there's a short cut to the iowa caucus, maybe this is the year we see it. i don't know. but i don't know of any other way to win it. and we have never had the big wall street money and the billionaires backing. not a corporately funded candidate so once again, if people want a candidate who gets all their cash from the same people that give the money to democrats and republicans they'll pick somebody else. it won't be me. >> next week you'll be on the main stage, if you win on monday. thanks so much for joining us, and good luck today and on monday. >> thank you. good to talk to you guys. >> all right. coming up straight ahead, more "fox & friends." something substantial when we return. hey pal? you ready?
