2:00 pm
which does she agree with? you've seen the tweet. you can retweet it. adele, we're trying to settle this once and for all. if i know adele, she knows me, this could be big. she could be joining me in iowa. could. live from iowa, hello, everyone. i'm dana perino, eric bolling, greg gutfeld. this is "the five." three days until election day in iowa. not much time left for the candidates to sway any undecided voters. they certainly tried hard last night. ted cruz was the front-runner on the stage which usually makes you the top target. he struck back at chris wallace after he felt he was being ganged up on. >> chris, i would note the last four questions have been, rand, please attack ted, chris, please
2:01 pm
attack ted, please attack ted. >> it is a debate, sir. >> a debate is a policy issue. but i will say this. if you guys ask one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage. >> don't worry. i'm not leaving the stage no matter what you ask me. >> and another interesting moment. different from what we've seen in previous debates was when the candidates were questioned about their electability and likability. in 2013 "time" magazine named marco rubio the savior of the gop. with polling in third place he was asked about that given title and why americans should vote for him despite his current standing. >> let me be clear. there is only one savior and it is not me. it is jesus christ who came down to earth and died for our sins. as far as the polls are kernel, iowa, monday night you'll to a caucus site. you'll be the first americans that get to vote. you'll be the first to answer the fundamental question, what come next for this country after
2:02 pm
seven disastrous years of barack obama. >> so we are live in des moines. >> to be here. we're excited. some people flew last night. one of us was actually in the debate hall. how was it? >> it was electric. you could feel the energy. it was dry. i have to say that it was dry. principle and policy is less exciting than personal attacks and it forces the viewer to pay attention more than they have to. here's my stupid metaphor of the day. remember when david lee roth left van halen. >> yes. it was tragic. >> the band was still great but you were missing the showmanship and the unpredictability of david lee. you had the great songs. you had the substance but you were missing the shirtless guy dancing on the ceiling. >> coincidentally, when he left he was never that good when he
2:03 pm
left van halen. >> that's a great lesson. you never know if you have something good until you lose it. >> here's a kleenex. >> yeah, yeah. i'm welling up a little bit. >> you flew in last night, kimberly. getting a feel for things here in iowa. what did you make of the debate after you got back? >> yeah. i think it was very informative. gave everybody a chance to shine and get some substance out. i thought marco rubio had a great debate. chris christie, kasich. i liked listening to they had to say. i think there were a couple of missed opportunities with ted cruz that didn't come off quite right saying he would leave the i know at a. okay, let's stay and listen. >> what did you think, juan? >> i think two big winners. i think rand paul did a fabulous job. and that was the best debate from rand paul who looked to me to be commanding, in control. and even conversationally.
2:04 pm
previously, he was a little bit of an ear tanlt. last night he was able to mod that he will instinct and come across as if he had something to say on critical issues. he was informed. the number two big winner, jeb bush. best performance bar none. and it makes you think. is it because van halen was not on the stage? >> david lee roth. >> is it because trump gets in your head. >> it's like, now i can be myself again. he's not going to come up and hit me. >> and he had a chance to shine. >> and i thought rubio got into the back and forth over the immigration policy. that was intriguing. on the one hand, you had bush saying, yeah, you were the leader of the gang of eight and we think this is a good idea. then you have cruz saying, wait, you were the leader of the gang
2:05 pm
of 8. the real tram for him was, you say that you're not for a pathway to citizenship. he says yeah, but i'm for -- >> we'll talk about that. >> we have more to come on that. let me get your reaction. jeb bush is getting a lot of praise. here was the moment when he defended being part of the republican establishment. >> i'm in the establishment because my dad, the greatest man alive was president of the united states and my brother as well, whom i adore was president, fine, i'll take it. i guess i'm part of the establishment. and barbara bush is my mom. i'll take too. this lex is not about pedigree. this is about people who are really hurting. we need a leader who will fix things and have a proven record to do it. >> that's always something jeb bush has had to deal with. his dad and his brother were both presidents.
2:06 pm
the family has been in the that public eye for so long and bu. >> i agree with you, rand paul had his best debate. he went back to the libertarian principles that he's been for for so long. >> and do you know what i heard from greg? that rand paul had a lot of those college students in the arena. >> he did. they were kind of annoying. >> he went with college kids. and -- >> the college is do those college kids show up for caucuses? >> i think they probably will. it was watching on tv. any time rand paul said anything, they screamed and yelled and it was kind of annoying. >> this is a tradition among the paul family. they were, they yelled stand with rand, i would shout that sit with mitt to confuse them. when jeb said about his dad
2:07 pm
being the greatest man alive. that was a direct stab at bill o'reilly and i thought it was unnecessary. >> everybody was attacking last night. >> on ted cruz. because he had the center podium, he had the opportunity to own the number one spot. to see what it feels like to be the front-runner. he's been trailing, trailing and he wants it so badly. that he didn't bring it home. he was rounding third. he kind of stumbled. >> do you know what you have to do? wait, wait. >> tell them about the des moines register front page. ted cruz had a rough night for ted cruz. one other story, all day we've been following the candidates throughout iowa. they're going to different caucuses, different colonies. and ted cruz didn't want to talk about his debate last night. that is a good indicator. >> do you know who did? marco rubio. >> it was interesting. i talked to a friend, kill bett,
2:08 pm
kimberly. he thought ted had his best debate last night. >> and i guess it would come down to how iowa and the caucusgoers are going to interpret it. i definitely feel ted cruz does better with donald trump on the stage with him to be able to spar back ask forth and to be able to engage. ted cruz is the master debater. there is no doubt about it. but everybody there is getting better at doing this and coming across with their ideas. could it happen with practice. >> i want to ask about a candidate we haven't mentioned yet. dr. ben carson has a lot of support in iowa. i thought he faded into the back ground last night as he has in other debates. what was it like from the crowd last night? >> everybody likes him. because he just, he seems to be enjoying himself. but there is also this sneaking suspicion that he knows he won't be president. he is just there enjoying himself and seeing what happens next. i don't mean to pile on cruz.
2:09 pm
he seems to be in a state of perpetual noinls. like he is always smelling sour milk. >> do you know somebody like that in. >> yes. that's why i put my support behind ted cruz. a man after my own heart. >> throughout his tenure in the senate, many have criticized ted cruz about not being likable. >> i am not the candidate of career politicians in washington. and i'll tell you the endorsement that's i am proud of are the over 200,000 volunteers across this country who have signed up to volunteer for our campaign. washington is broken and the people i have been accountable to every single day in the senate are the 27 million texan who's i represent. and i made a promise to them that i make to you today. if i am elected, every single day i will do two things. tell the truth and do what i said i would do.
2:10 pm
>> he's been fairly successful at saying and kind of proving his mettle as an outsider. even though he is an insider. >> he is. he is a united states senator. what caught my ear in that little sound bite, dana, he says washington is broken as a way of condemning the career politicians. so you would think the next state would be, and i'm here to fix it. i'm here with my solution. instead he plays the strong anti-establishment crowd as if he is not a supreme court law clerk. he didn't involve himself with the bush resolution out of florida as a top lawyer for the campaign. he acts like none of this ever happened and he has flown in from mars. not true. >> can you at least give them benefit of the doubt that those things did happen but they happened a long time snag and since did he make it to the senate, he's made himself an outsider as a senator.
2:11 pm
even the outside -- >> that doesn't make you an outsider. what makes you an outsider is if you have ideas that are different and challenge the status quo. what he's dulling is alienate -- >> i think, that's what he calls himself an outsider. >> i'll listen to you in a second. if you know this, what is the great idea ted cruz has brought to washington to shake up? >> shutting down the government. >> and also an insider. and he has come one thing in immigration that are not very popular with people in d.c. >> they want me to move on. it was a story that captured all the headlines before the debate. donald trump not attending to address the elephant not in the room last night. his opponents were asked about his decision. >> i'm a maniac. and everyone on this stage is
2:12 pm
stupid, fat and ugly. and ben, you're a terrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way -- >> let's begin by being clear about what this is about. it is not about donald trump. >> i kind of miss donald trump. he was a teddy bear to me. we hassle such a loving relationship in these debates and the tweets. i kind of miss him. i wish he was here. >> they were trying to make fun of david lee roth. >> yes. >> you win and you lose with this. everybody said that they want substance. but they also want excitement. it is like wlargs is the best part of the cake? the frosting. and donald trump is promising a whole cake made of frosting. and we're going, is that possible? could we have a whole cake made of frosting? and trump is saying, yeah. i'm that cake i'm 100% frosting. lick me. >> oh! >> okay. >> i don't know where to go with that, kimberly.
2:13 pm
i'll turn it over to you. >> when it comes to food, edibles, what not, i'm your girl. so it was definitely you missed his feel, his energy in the room. i thought the way jeb bush hand it was kind of cute. he's a teddy bear, it was a nice classy way to do it. to stay above the fray. and a lot of there was this going to hurt donald trump by not being on the stage? so far today it doesn't seem lying it did. >> take it more like the cream pie in the face. i think he threw a pie in the face at fox news and a pie in the face to the voters. he didn't show up. who is buying that? what really astounded me was that santorum and huckabee show up. wait a second. what's going on? have they conceded? i guess so. day after, it looks good for trump. i don't know that it glooks for
2:14 pm
the republican party that he got away with that. >> so a lot of people will push back on, you have the trump group that will push back on fox. the other groups will push back on trump. i'll tell you what you did see. you saw a fair and tough moderator. all three of them asked very tough questions. and wasn't just one or two. everyone got a fair shot on some tough questions. >> hats off to megyn, bret. >> and martha. >> and greg. >> and defin >> one of the most contentious moments of the night came when megyn kelly pressed both ted cruz and marco rubio on their immigration records. we'll discuss that when we come back. and later, facebook friday. post your questions on facebook.com the five fnc.
2:15 pm
parking is hard to find. seems like everyone drives. and those who do should switch to geico because you could save hundreds on car insurance. ah, perfect. valet parking. evening, sir. hello! here's the keys. and, uh, go easy on my ride, mate. hm, wouldn't mind some of that beef wellington... to see how much you could save on car insurance, go to geico.com.
2:16 pm
ah! (car alarm sounds) it's ok!

we're back now live from iowa with more of our debate
2:19 pm
breakdown. immigration was certainly a red hot topic last night. marco rubio and ted cruz tried on defend their shifting views on the issue. >> i do not support amnesty. i said i do not support -- >> you said past criticship is code for amnesty. >> it has been. at the time and the context of that was in 2009 and 2010 where the last effort for legalization was an effort done in the senate. it was an effort led by several people that provided almost an instant pass with very little obstacles moving forward. what i've always said is this issue needs to be solved. they've been talking about this issue for 30 years and nothing ever happens. >> i have a detailed immigration plan on my website. ted cruz.org. it was designed with iowa's own congressman steve king and jeff sessions. and we have the tools in federal law to do this now. we can build the fence, end sanctuary city by cutting off
2:20 pm
funding to them. we can end welfare for those illegally. what is missing is the political will. too many democrats and sadly, too many republicans don't want to solve this problem. >> all right. great question by megyn on that. then they exchanged fire. >> this is the lie that ted's campaign is built on and he touch on it. he is the most conservative guy and everyone else is a ryno. the truth is, throughout this campaign you've been willing to say or do anything to get votes. >> the facts are simple. when he ran for election in florida, he told the people of florida, if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. when i ran in texas, if you elect me, i will lead the fight against amnesty. we both made the identical promises. when we came to washington we made a different choice. marco made the choice to go the direction of the major donors to support amnesty because he thought it was politically advantageous. i honored my commitment. >> one of the best moments of
2:21 pm
the debate last night. the back and forth between rubio and cruz. here's the candidates themselves. and a little bit of sparring. >> i thought it was terrific. i think it was ill lust traitive of people saying, i was trying to get something done on a critical issue for the country. that's marco rubioful then you have cruz saying, no, actually, you were standing with the establishment. you're standing with barack obama, chuck schumer, harry reid. the bad guys for these purposes in the debate. and then you have jeb bush say, wait a second. amnesty is not necessarily a negative and resolving the issue with 12 million illegals. there's something to be said for that. i thought where it got good. you're trying the play whatever is politically and teedent just to get elected and that won't make you a good president. i thought rubio scored big with that point. >> that was a nice punch and counter punch. >> i agree rubio hit hard.
2:22 pm
the amnesty issue is the dividing issue. the issue that some would say, many people would believe what separates the real firm conservatives from the ones who are less conservative. swishy, whatever you want to call it. rubio said rhino or whatever. is there a path to amnesty? you're likely not going to be considered a true conservative. it is off the table for the ones who say, i'm too conservative. there's there's no path to amnesty. the 12 million who are here. do they get to stay or go? the amnesty part of saying, being a citizen or a vote even further down vote. the wedge issue. and i think although rubio did score with a punch on there. if you take where they stand, that's still the difference between the two of them. >> that was the moment that ted cruz should have capitalized on. do you think they made the case?
2:23 pm
>> not necessarily. i think this has been going on in all the debates. and even if you go back to the mid material election in 2012, i'm sorry, 2014. this issue comes up over and over again. to me immigration has become like a new lit must test. it becomes this box checking exercise. it is not gay marriage this time. not even legalization of marijuana. it has become immigration. governing is so much did i have from campaigning and solving this problem is much more gray than black and white. so making it, trying to turn it into a box checking exercise is not helpful to actually solving the problem if we are worried about wages or if we're worried about security. also, it will take a lot of effort to get solved. campaign slogans won't do it. >> let me say amen. that's why you can say, does this make you a true conservative or not. i think a lot of people including donald trump who has made this the issue for this
2:24 pm
campaign would say, something has to be done. we have to find a way to deal with this issue. >> maybe he does believe. that i will tell you from the far right conservative base, it is no amnesty. >> and donald trump's position is mass deportation. >> how realistic is that? >> how many people a day? 7500 a day? >> you can bring them in over time the right way. through the right doors. >> oh, boy. >> obviously this is a very tough issue. not only for candidates to secure the republican nomination, but then it gets even more dicey when you get to the general election and trying to get some independence or moderates to come over to your side to win the white house. how do they have to sell it? >> i want to echo eric. anybody who thinks fox news plays favorites. that throws that out the window. that was the toughest question
2:25 pm
against rubio and cruz. they're two different candidates. it was incredibly fair. i disagree with you about immigration defining the intensity of your conservatism. i think it trumps ideology. i don't think somebody who is ant-immigration to the far, far, far extreme has almost no, no other issue matters. ann coulter said, she doesn't care if trump performs abortions in the white house because she supports him on immigration. but interesting to me. you have a canadian -- you have a cuban canadian and a cuban american fighting over who gets into this country. and it really is about, it is not about people. it is about border policy and border control. america is the greatest nightclub on the planet. you don't go through the window. you go through the door. the president in a sense is the bouncer. >> america was a bouncer. we want to secure our borders.
2:26 pm
it is also part of our broader -- >> a woman can't be president? >> today those candidates are making a mad dash across iowa making last-minute pitches before monday. we check in with campaign carl next. stay with us. what makes this simple salad the best simple salad ever?
2:27 pm
2:28 pm
2:29 pm
heart healthy california walnuts. the best simple veggie dish ever? heart healthy california walnuts. the best simple dinner ever? heart healthy california walnuts. great tasting, heart healthy california walnuts. so simple. get the recipes at walnuts.org. why you couldn't be healthy but we find that one really good reason and that's our family.
2:30 pm
i'm going to look back on this time and be like man, those were the good ole days like i'm in the good ole days like right now. i love what i do, i love the customers, i know their kids, they know about my kids. that's the beauty of working at gnc, we're here for you. just ask. we make it simple. gnc. welcome back to "the five." the candidates are fanned out across this state with only 72 hours to go or so. let's check in now with campaign carl. i have to do this. control room, show everyone where carl is. this is amazing. can you do it? warmer, warmer. campaign carl. right across the lobby from us.
2:31 pm
>> tell us. tell us what the candidates did today. who is feeling that they did well and who is a little nervous about last night? >> we got here and we want to apologize anybody we may have sped past as we were coming down for the jeb bush event taking place. it is now totally organizing time. the candidates are essentially letting a lot of the criticisms of one another go. they'll still go after bernie sanders and hillary clinton. but the criticism will subside because the candidates have to organize their ground troops. they have to feel positive about what may be a snowy night on monday. so that's really what it is. the tone has changed. it is not as. about interparty argument and
2:32 pm
violence as it is just trying to get the voters to show up. >> dana is up. >> i want to ask you, if you thought any of the candidates made a convincing final argument. for those who might have been undecided in iowa, have you heard that last night changed anybody's mind? >> there is some sense that marco rubio did a pretty good job and that people who have been on the fence and really didn't have somewhere they were leaning are now leaning his way. and frankly, from the jeb bush event that we were at a little while ago, a lot of people thought he had the best debate of the cycle so far. largely because he was not getting himself in by donald trump. >> so carl on, america's marco seemed to indicate that unless cruz wins iowa, he said cruz has put more time in, more appearances, more money, has more people in those dorm rooms
2:33 pm
than any other republican candidate. what do you think? >> it is an interesting criticism for raising the expectations for ted cruz. it points out that he has not been here as much as the other candidates and frankly, iowans are pretty jealous about getting to interact with politicians. so marco is pointing out cruz is doing at this time way they like it. with you raising the expectations for one's rivals is a big part of the three dimensional chess that's iowa. you don't have to necessarily win coming in first or second or third. what you have to do is beat certain people. for somebody like marco rubio, if he come ahead of jeb bush and kasich and christie, even if he is fourth, it positions him well. >> momentum is so much of this in terms of going in to the days preceding this big decision that really kind of sets the stage for expectation levels for the
2:34 pm
rest of the primary season. what are you getting the sense in term who have is really the one that won last night. that had the most momentum and the biggest bounce from it. >> ted cruz got lion's share of the attention. there are some who said he didn't do a particularly good job because in some cases he was caustic. but if there is momentum, it is very hard to detect it. polls take place of the sense of momentum in iowa. and that is a huge mistake. the poll are notoriously wrong. the momentum doesn't really even appear until basically today and tomorrow. we know who the front-runners. are we know that robidas rubio is contesting for third and there will be perhaps a search for ben carson who has been spending a tremendous amount of time in iowa for the last year and was organized early on. so momentum is a wonderful thing. you can win the caucuses with as many as 40,000 votes. for some, they've been picking
2:35 pm
them up and getting their commitments as early as last year. whether or not they show up could be up to whether or not it snows. >> there was an odd moment. it mibl near the end when cruz went to talk to the other candidates and they all kind of moved away from them. do they not like him? >> body language says a lot in this game. all of the candidates in one fashion or another, whether it came directly from their mouths or their staffers are whispering it into reporter's ears, continue to make the argument with cruz is unlikable. donald trump was the guy who pushed this the hardest. so what you saw last night was, not a lot of interest from the rest rivals in cozying up with cruz because cruz has been very tough in the last month going after most of them. >> we'll leave it right there. carl, we'll wave to you on the way out. up next, among bombshell developments over hillary

2:41 pm
her. >> do you know why the republican party will want to take a chance on me? they know hillary clinton will never be prosecuted by this justice department and they'll want to put a former federal prosecutor to prosecute her next september. and there's no one better qualified to prosecute her. when i take her on, i guarantee one thing. she will never get within 10 miles of the white house. the days for the clintons in public housing are over. >> so how is the scandal affecting her supporters? i hit the campaign to chat with some of them. outside one of her events at grand view university in des moines. and i must tell you, it doesn't come up. they don't seem to be re. the minute that i come back here, boy, everybody is talking about it. obviously, the clinton people say, you know what? those e-mails were not marked top secret when they were received by hillary clinton. i must tell you, it seem like
2:42 pm
the heat is building. >> they're holding like 7,000 e-mails until after the primaries. the democrats see her like a used car. >> a lemon. >> she's a lemon. >> it's really true. right now, they're having like, i think biden is regretting that he did not get in. he should have. i like what chris christie had to say. i think he's right. i think the fbi will recommend that she be indicted. if you look at the evidence, as a lawyer, as i have, i'm telling you, she is in trouble. and i think that's why she desperately wants to get in the white house. >> one of the things i heard when i was at grand view today. people saying bernie sanders has a lot of energy among young people. and that's just not to be denied here in iowa. so the question is, do those young people come out and caucus
2:43 pm
for him? or does hillary's organization carry the day? >> you asked earlier about rand paul cox he get young people out. i think young people are more engaged in this election. these millennials are more mature and they understand they have more on the line. some want to go with the bernie sanders way. i don't think that's such a good idea for their future. about the e-mails, she is asking the state department to release the e-mails. she is asking them to commit a felony just lying she committed. in addition, the reason why her e-mails were not marked classified. we know what she was having staff do at her instruction, was to make them nonpaper. this is a person who knows nothing about technology but knows enough to say, make it nonpayment. take off the declassification. when they're saying there are 22 e-mails that are so secretive they cannot be released to the public. she's trying to hide behind that. you know the one person who
2:44 pm
could make all these documents if he decided to, if he thinks their so benign is barack obama. the president has the power to declassify. if he wants to help her and he thinks this is a good idea, he should do it. >> here's how it works. the fbi will do the investigation. the fbi answers to the doj. the doj is basically answering to the white house. the white house points and gets the person to run the doj. so be chris christie did talk tough. it sounded great because he is a former federal prosecutor. however, there were several others who would have the opportunity to have the doj go forthwith the investigation and have the doj investigate, what, did we even say the reason why the fbi didn't want to release the e-mails? >> yeah. they were too dangerous. lives may be at stake if they release them. >> yeah, yeah. >> she put her own convenience and circumvented the law and put
2:45 pm
other people's lives in danger. that's the problem. for her convenience. that's your commander? chief? >> i think the strength of your argument is in fact she did something for her convenience that was not, was not standing policy and makes her seem entitled and privileged. do you agree? >> i'm just preparing for facebook. >> we were supposed to teach. we have a thousand questions. >> i must say, there is a lot of excite nypd republican circles. mabel hillary is in trouble. stay right there. facebook friday.

eric? >> i would like to have a beer with chris christie. he's my governor and i've been hard on him. and i think, i like him. i think he is a really fun, likable guy. my leaning on him has to do with some of his policy stuff. i would like to have a beer with christie. >> boy, i don't get this. everybody should want to have a beer with donald trump. he would have a drink after i got through with -- >> oh! >> we ought to have a party. >> i sense a twitter war coming on. >> donald trump. >> you would drive him to drink. that's what i was trying to say. >> he doesn't need alcohol. >> high on life. yeah. >> he's like, get up early and do a thousand events. he's good to go. i would like to have a beer with jeb bush. i would. i love the bush family. >> have a bush with the bush. >> have an anheuser-busch with the bush but

>> i don't know if i would want to have a drink with any of them. how do you have a real conversation with someone trying to sell themselves to you? >> better question. would any of them have a beer with us? >> that's true. >> you would have a beer with dr. carson. you've got so many neurosis. >> he could do brain surgery. >> he would have to find a brain. >> did we really learn anything new from any of the candidates last night compared to the last debate? >> well, yeah. i think what you saw was two full hours of them talking policy, going back and forth at each other. and i said it earlier. i think ted cruz had the opportunity to really grab it. ted cruz will be in the top three. no question. he has been there. he will be. people of iowa will put him in the top three. was he going to make it to the number one spot? again, i don't think his answers last night.
2:52 pm
i don't think his response with rubio and the jokes. i think they fell flat with me. >> yeah. >> i think we learned something about donald trump. he can be petty and he can take slights to an extreme. i'm just surprised. i thought at the last minute he would show up. he didn't show up. and he thinks that he is in control. i wonder what it says about trump at some point. >> kimberly? >> okay. so last night i think because the dynamic of it was different with having ted cruz in the center seat and getting rapid fire from everybody else. i think that was important to kind of see how he hands it. how he took that. that's part of the evaluation that people will make. he held his own certainly. we don't see him bragging about debate results like we discussed. >> anything new. policy wise, i thought one of best questions came from bret baier and chris christie dodged it. probably smartly. it was a question of entitlement spending. if you're trying to get the government under control, what
2:53 pm
was one government program you could turn to that the government should not pay for. he went to planned parenthood. >> i think i saw three people on stage who could beat hillary. >> who was that. >>? i won't say. >> you can only answer with one word. you're close to the answer. how could you like your corn on the cob, boiled, broiled, baked or in your gas tank? >> hello, everyone. here in the new york city newsroom here in the studio. the five, they are there in des moines, iowa, holding it down and we are going to come right back in a moment. hey pal? you ready?
