hi, everyone. it's a big morning. sunday the 31st of january, 2016. i'm anna kooiman. one day to caucus time. the final frantic push to iowa and the presidential candidates hit the campaign trial in a last minute effort to shore up support in the first of the nation voting gets under way. and spelling trouble for hillary clinton. yep, can bernie sanders pull off the upset in iowa? then we're talking iowa today. but do americans really even know where iowa is? it's out that way somewhere.

>> absolutely. we'll get to the breaking news in iowa. the final poll before the caucuses just released showing where each candidate ranks with just one day to go. >> everyone is looking at this poll and waiting for it. peter doocy has more from des moines. hey, peter. >> hey, brian, it is the new "des moines register" poll out. you have to pay attention to what it says because the pollster ann sell zer has correctly called every winner with one exception, rick santorum in 2012. so it looks like this. donald trump on top with 28%. ted cruz five points back, 23%. then rubio seen by many having a lot of momentum after a strong thursday debate at 15%. ben carson is the only other one in double digits at 10%. this is a caucus, votes are not cast in a traditional way. iowans are often changing their

minds so if you're not someone's first choice it helps to be their second and marco rubio is the most popular second choice. if their candidate isn't viable, they will back rubio. the 7% say trump is their second choice, 17% say cruz is their second choice. on the democratic side though, the race is even closer. clinton 45%, sanders, 42. her lead within the margin of error. keep an eye on martin o'malley. 3% support, not enough to cat aput him in -- catapult him to victory tomorrow night, but the backers may line up with the second choice which is what happens if a candidate can't scrape together at least 15% of the people there and that means the o'malley people can change the game tomorrow. back to you in new york. >> thank you very much. the reason the o'malley people would impact is in the way that

the democrats set up the republicans vote in secret ballots. but on the democratic side, okay, everyone for martin o'malley over in that corner, everybody for hillary clinton over there. and if they don't make 15% over in the o'malley corner, they say, okay, o'malley, go find a new team. this 3% could swing it. >> there's why o'malley getting a lot of differential treatment from both candidates. they hope he get 3%, as little support as he has, and throws it behind one or the other. it's my privilege to bring in a guy, who is located in des moines, iowa, it's tucker carlson. how pumped are you not only to get this started but to start analyzing and going through here we are with the candidates and their final lap? >> we have waited a year for it. there's never been an election like this in my lifetime. it is all about trump and

sanders. if either one of those guys wins, you'll see an earthquake in the candidates' party. if they lose, you'll see a collective sigh of relief from washington, from the parties themselves and you will see massive infusion of cash and momentum to their challengers, to hillary clinton and to i would guess rubio and cruz. but i mean in the case of trump, he's been up all month. if he loses tomorrow night, he's going to be i think dramatically weakened. i think it affects the subsequent contests. voting affects voting in the future. this guy looks like a winner or he doesn't. >> let's talk about this. ted cruz according to the latest poll, he has gone down 8% since early in december. tucker, yesterday, the secretary of state in iowa chastised the cruz campaign because they sent out a mailer they said was in violation of the spirit of the law. it said across the top in big

letters, voting violation, it said voters were receiving a notice because lower voted -- voter expectation in your area. essentially what it said, you haven't voted in the past, now is the time to get going. ted cruz addressed it last night. he said this in sioux city. listen to this. >> listen, matt shultzs is a former secretary of state, the chairman of our campaign, put out a public statement saying these mailers are routine. that the iowa republican party has done so in the past in past elections and i will apologize to nobody for using every tool we can to encourage iowa voters to come out and vote. >> tucker, was this a fair play? >> well, i think it's shameless and over the top and pretty funny. is it effective? they have social science that suggests that voters can be shamed into voting. among journalists it's been a joke for the last year -- pretty light hearted one, cruz's fund-raising e-mails which are very, very clever and tricky and

stealthy. the headlines like i'm out. you open it up. and the open rate is really high. this is of a piece with this kind of amazing fund-raising operation. over the top fund-raising operation. >> here's the risk, i think, tucker, is that in it, they have information your neighbors will know how you did and you want to improve your score. so if you are motivated to go, you might be able toage -- might be agitated that ted cruz is calling you out. you might be motivated but agitated. >> also terrified. ted cruz is watching you. keeping track of your voting patterns no, i know. it's hard to see how this breaks the law. i guess you see it as ominous or as clever. >> well, secretary of state says they do not distribute the voting records at all. they're available for political purposes only. so it's not like neighbors are going to be spying on neighbors with. this. >> big brother is watching. >> they're sophisticated.

cruz has a folksy affect on the stump, but behind the scenes there are sophisticated people looking at the numbers. >> we noticed yesterday his ad buying has shifted and he's hammering senator marco rubio on immigration and calling him the republican obama. >> look at that. >> it shows you how things are changing -- it shows you that he fears rubio's surge and rubio is surging at the end. >> all right. tucker, let's switch over to the democratic side of the aisle. in the latest poll, of likely democratic caucusgoers in iowa, clinton at 45%, and 42% for sanders. and martin o'malley at 3%. and so they'll split the difference. >> because of the e-mail scandal, not enough attention has been paid to this bernie sanders insurgency. i can tell you here, des moines is crawling with people from washington, democrats over 40, who are tied to the clinton family, to the clinton machine

who are here last minute at their open expense. these are like lawyer, high level people who have come to volunteer for iowa. >> is that out of fear? >> totally, it's a sense of panic, are you kidding? if they lose iowa, they're going to lose new hampshire. that doesn't happen very often and that's a sign of weaks than will incite others they believe to get others tone the race. they're desperate to win this. >> the better it is for bernie sanders, is that how you want to win, keep people at home. this is the most stunning news that could depress many people. people are asked are you okay with a socialist? right now are you okay with a presidential candidate who describes themselves as socialist? 68% say yes, 25% don't, 7% aren't sure. don't run from the socialism label. >> socialists murdered more people than any other regimes in

the history of man in the 20th century. we seem to have forgotten that. and by the way, 17% of republicans according to a gallup poll said they'll be okay with a socialist president which is kind of mind-boggling. >> we'll spend ourselves broke. people aren't studying economics 101. >> but they get free stuff. tucker, stand by. because we know they'll be bringing out the breakfast buffet there in downtown des moines shortly. >> i'll be there as always. >> on the corn muffins. >> we have some news. >> yeah. isis has a brand new video, threatening a strike deadlier than the 9/11 attacks. it features a man with long hair who appears to be white, and talks about a quote that will make them forget about september 11th and the paris massacre and suggests that spain may be the top target. this comes as the pentagon asks for more troops. and 3,700 american troops already on the ground there. a biker brawl takes a deadly

turn in colorado. one person is dead and at least nine others hurt after a gun and knife battle broke out at a motorcycle expo in denver. three of those injured are in critical condition at this hour. witnesses say rival gangs started fighting in a stairwell and minutes later gunfire rang out. police suspect more than one attacker and so far have not made any arrests. and on the run no more. the final two inmates who escaped from a california jail back behind bars this morning. hossein nayeri was arrested. a stolen white van was spotted, nayeri tried to run, and he was caught. bac duong on the left turned himself in to santa ana

remember that this information is very worried about their own legacy and she, you know, was their secretary of state. so they have to own her behavior. if they think she's done something wrong, i think it behooves protecting the legacy of the president to be open about it. but she's got real trouble here. it's coming a a very bad time for her. >> jessica, she does have trouble now, doesn't she? >> she definitely does, but we haven't seen it hurting her poll numbers which is interesting. she still has an edge on sanders but was know for instance 83% of her voters are officially committed to her, while only 69% of sanders' voters. and last week in the abc/"washington post" poll she won on every single issue except for regulating banks and honesty and trustworthy. bu that's not translating in a drop for her among the democrats. to katie's point about the fact that the obama administration needs to protect their legacy, we saw last week that obama gave

an interview with glenn thrush where he all but endorsed her, and didn't hurt national security. i don't know if this is a step that they know an indictment isn't coming. >> what if the intelligence community is able to prove that because she was hacked and pretty much everybody knows she was hacked, if she was hacked, agents in the field died. does that change it? >> absolutely. i think she's already got the specter of benghazi hanging over her. and for a secretary of state to behave so recklessly and she said she knew the difference between a classified and a nonclassified e-mail, she can identify that. she said it's not marked classified so it's not my fault. she's a pro at blaming other people and even democratic voters are growing tired of it. that's why they're feeling the

bern. >> they are feeling the bern, according to the latest des moines register poll, where they're neck and neck. jessica, the final word? >> i think that hillary clinton should have owned up to this being a mistake from the get go. i don't like that she did it out of convenience, it was a mistake. but i don't think it will bring her down. we see that democratic voters were changing her about her benghazi testimony. i think we can move past it. new hampshire, i'm not sure about that, but i think she's moving forward and she's in good position considering what's gone on. >> i don't think the families who lost loved ones in benghazi were cheering. >> i don't either. but i was surprised to see. >> i partisan, it's that season. >> it is that season. thank you both for joining us. >> thank you. all right. 20 minutes after the top of the hour. on a sunday coming up, the military wraps up the investigation into david

all right. some international news. these are brought to you in english. china strongly condemning the u.s. after a ship cruised by an island. china claims they were not notified before hand, but the u.s. has conducted operations like this for decades and turkey is accusing russia of violating

the air space again. this can lead to serious consequences. the tensions have been high since november when turkey shot down a russian jet for cross over to their territory. and the texas supreme court is unanimously ruling that banners with biblical words of encouragement can be recognized as private speech protected under the first amendment. joining us now is ashton lawrence and the lawyer for the case. thank you and good morning to you. >> thank you, thank you for having us. >> we have been following this for a couple of years. a victory has to taste so sweet. ashton, you're graduated and in college, but this kept you and your squad together. when you got the news from the supreme court what's going to

your mind? >> oh, it was amazing news to finally hear. great news for me and the other cheerleaders and for all students in the u.s. >> well, tell us back in 2012 if you can, how this started as words of encouragement rather than pounding on the enemy with banners. >> right. so that summer, we had a cheerleading camp like normal. we decided to put out a more positive message and we decided on scriptures. it wasn't a big deal to us, but it quickly became a big deal when we had operation. and it grew from there. >> and i understand it grew out of one complaint and what happened? >> well, the superintendent decided to say you can't have bible banners on -- or bible verses on the banners anymore. they shut it down. that's why we had to represent the cheerleaders and sued to vindicate their rights. >> right. well, initially they were allowed to carry the banners, but it was under a different stipulation and you had to keep fighting. what was that? >> yeah.

we won a temporary order requiring the school to allow the bible banners. the case as continued on for a number of years. we don't know why the school district has continued to fight and appeal the order that ruled in our favor for the cheerleaders, but, you know, you can keep one the case at liberty institu institute.org. we're thankful for this because we were assisted by senator cruz and paxton in filing support of the cheerleaders in this case. >> i know you're offering a big thank you to them for their support. ashton, would you encourage other students across the country -- we do stories like this all the time. you know, sometimes the school districts and sports teams, they just bow out and say, you know what, all right, we'll stop doing whatever it is we're doing. you were victorious, will you continue others to keep fighting? >> absolutely.

there. it was super interesting. here's part of what we saw. >> 48 hours to go before the voting begins here in iowa and a tight race at the top. one of those in it -- ted cruz. we came to the cruz rally half an hour outside of des moines and we waded into the crowd of cruzzers. are you for cruz? >> yes. >> i love it. >> you have been in iowa for more than a month. >> well, yeah. i think today is the 48th day. >> where are you staying? >> at camp cruz. >> what's camp cruz? >> it's an old dormitory at an old business college. >> going to caucus on monday? >> yes, i am. >> how complicated is it? >> not complicated at all. >> where are you from? >> wichita, kansas. came here specifically to try to hit as many rallies as i can. because i'm an independent. >> where are you on trump? >> no. >> bernie? >> bernie -- lofty ideas.

sound good. but economically, it's not going to happen. >> what about jeb? >> bless his heart. [ laughter ] >> it's between cruz and trump and i like chris christie a lot too. >> yeah. >> if you had to bet on it, and you don't, but let's say you did, where would you put your money? >> i think i'm leaning towards cruz. >> think cruz will win? >> i don't know, i hope so. >> well -- >> i think you made your decision. >> i'm probably leaning more towards donald trump because i think i like the fact he's not a politician. >> what about cruz? >> i think he'll make a great president and i met his wife. she'll make a better first lady than bill clinton in the white house. >> sounds like some people are still shopping for a candidate out there, tucker. >> they are, my favorite line maybe i ever heard at line -- jeb bush, bless his heart. cruz by the way was a wandering

all around, and his wife was talking to some many people. we talked to cruz, we caught him in the rally. he did a rally with glenn beck and we talked to him for a second. here is part of the conversation. >> i'm energized and invigorated. we're going 16 hours a day, seven days a week. >> what are you eating? >> it's the energy and passion, people are on fire. it's an unbelievable thing to be lifted up in intercessory prayer by thousands and thousands of people. every day i jump out of bed. >> what time? >> depends when we're hitting the road. i prefer it to be later, often it's earlier than i like. we're going to all 99 counties, we're in the low 90s, we're finish on monday. >> what's your favorite county? >> which ever one i'm in at the moment. tuck e it comes down to turnout, monday night, 7:00 p.m. in iowa. we are seeing the old reagan

coalition coming together. and we're seeing the libertarians and reagan democrats coming together. if conservatives show up monday night, if we stand together, we're going to win. >> tucker, what kind of question is that, what's your favorite county? like -- >> where i was born. >> like asking who's your favorite child? >> well, i was trying to throw him off. >> no matter what you ask ted cruz he's always the same. that's not a criticism, just an observation. but he's super intense. he looks another you like this, he's totally sincere. i thought let's see if we can get ted cruz of a different taste. >> he answered like a true politician. didn't want to alienate the 99. >> the cruz operation figured out they have all the voters deciding between him and donald trump and where have they got the numbers, i'm not sure, but it shows the level of organization that they have.

>> they have a lot of math majors over on the cruz team for sure. >> they do. >> they know everybody. >> we have tucker carlson live in the embassy suites and needs to lower her voice because martha needs her beauty rest. >> sorry about that. >> 37 minutes after the hour. one day to go before the caucuses and a looming blizzard set to hit the state on the groundhog day, could it affect the turnout? >> rick reichmuth is tracking the storm. >> if we were a six hour difference on the storm we'd have really huge impacts but i think we're just barely going to miss it. that doesn't mean if you have a blizzard baering down on your state you're not thinking, maybe i need to go to the store to get some eggs and milk or something. instead of going to caucus night. look at the maps. let me show you how this is playing out. you see the energy out across the west. that's a big storm today across the parts of southern california. and in towards the four corners.

then get ready for a blizzard that will take effect tonight into tomorrow in places like denver and nebraska. this is the future radar. this is how the storm plays out. you see it spins across the four corners for monday. southwestern iowa starting to get a little bit of action. they're starting off as rain, maybe freezing rain. so if we have any impacts i think western iowa may be dealing with this. going towards around midnight we start to see that fill in with some snow. all of the media that descended on iowa you'll be stuck there because you have a blizzard in iowa. here's the forecast for iowa, temperatures nicer than average. roads should be okay. just the southwestern corner late into the night, problematic possibly. guys? >> thank you. just to be clear, if you don't get out monday night, there's a possibility tucker could be stuck in des moines until the spring thaw? >> maybe until marchish.

all right. you're not going to like this story. another shocking development in the expanding v.a. scandal. the former st. paul, minnesota, director kimberly graves who allegedly stole $130,000 in relocation expenses which is taxpayer money has been reinstated. this after she appealed her demotion. she'll likely get the $50,000 pay cut back from her paycheck. but there's no reason given why. join us is the vice president of concerned veterans for america, who does a lot of work on reforming the v.a. dan, this seems like a massive setback for the push to streamline things and get people accountable. >> it is. and it's important to know that this is actually the second time this has happened. she had her demotion reversed couple of months ago because the v.a. forgot to include paperwork in the case before the merit services protection board which is the group that reversed this

demotion. what could have happened is that the v.a. could have bungled the case. >> so she had $130,000, it was supposed to be used for her relocating from philadelphia to st. paul. the v.a. didn't say this didn't happen, it turns out that we have evidence to the contrary, we know she moved up. we'll be responsible to the taxpayers to give her the lost wages. >> absolutely. then that's what the v.a. say. they call it an error in judgment. they refuse to call it misconduct. and this is a big reason why the v.a. is never going to get fixed with the current leadership. they can't acknowledge what real misconduct is. brian, i'm sure if you stole $130,000 from fox news you'd be thrown out the door face first. it is absurd. this is unfortunately the toxic culture that infects that institution. >> i find out too that diana reubens was also demoted and for allegedly pocketing $274,000 in

tomorrow night 7:00 central they like rubio second best. on the democratic side clinton is in the lead but barely. 45 to 42 lead over bernie sanders is within the margin of error. martin o'malley has 3%. probably not enough for a win. the way the caucus works if a candidate can't scrape together 15% in the caucus room aren't seen as viable and are court by the other candidates supporters. in a race where clinton leads by 3, mali having 3% could make a huge pierce. the pollster is almost always right. he's correctly predicted every winner in both parties since 1988 with one exception that was rick santorum last time and again she's calling for victory by trump and clinton tomorrow night. back to you in new york. >> i guess the prediction was it was a thoughtful process, mitt

candidates they support. nobody goes into the voting booth and decides i came to vote for one person i'm voting for another. there's a significant percentage of people who are won over by those debates. that's why you see a big fluctuation. in the last one, rick santorum going in, the "des moines register" poll had him in third place and he won and that's because people changed their mind based on the persuasive powers of rick santorum supporters in the caucus. it's a really, really dynamic situation. that's why hillary clinton is concerned about this because if anybody can make the case it's bernie supporters. they mean it. they are not here because they are getting paid by hillary. these are true believers. >> it is quirky. very grassroots. about as grassroots as you can get. you would think these voters are highly informed too to be able

to debate and prove their point. tucker, we're hearing reports that iowa may becoming less conservative. what your noticing while you're there. >> reporter: there's a national trend and the result of demographic change. it's profound here in iowa. it's a significantly different population than was here 30 years ago. same thing in new hampshire because of immigration. ton of people from massachusetts moved to new hampshire. immigration is the cause for it here. then there's also this populace moment. people are still mad about the financial collapse of 2008 and the bank bailout. attitudes have changed. basically when you see huge changes in voter attitudes you're looking at the results of demographic change. >> the benefit is more to trump than cruz, is that correct? >> reporter: overall demographic change in the paf 50 years benefitted democrats dramatically.

you wouldn't have obama as president. this is a primary so only republicans are voting republican. i'm not sure what effect it would have. i think it's tougher for trump in a state like this because you have to stand up and say i'm for trump. we've seen a lot of trump voters or some percentage want to vote for him but don't necessarily want to talk about it. so i'm not sure that helps him here. >> ultimately when it's time to do the voting in the republican caucuses it's done by a secret ballot unlike the democrats where you stand in a room. democrats -- there were 4,000 of them in a room presumably democrat yesterday pre-caucus for bernie sanders. he has just really electrified folks out on the stump. his message of, you know, things are rigged. i'm going to washington, i'm going to unrig things. >> reporter: right. his message is not different from hillary. she shifted her message dramatically over to the left

our next guest correctly predicted the two caucus winners. he had huckabee and rick santorum. this year he's throwing his analysis behind ted cruz. will he be right? the des moines register poll has trump on top. bob vander plat is here to weigh in. why do you believe that you are right and the register is wrong? >> well i just take a look at the ground game. i've never seen anything like this. the energy. the momentum. the enthusiasm. the turn out mechanism. cruz's campaign is exceptionally well run. he's a great candidate. people on the ground are mobilized for him. i look for ted cruz to be the victor on monday night. i think that poll was very good for ted cruz when you look at the underneath numbers.

not only are a lot of people saying he's their first choice, people are saying he's their second choice. when he does a head-to-head match up with trump he beats them by 20 points. a lot of people going into that caucus will say who can stop trump. a lot of people don't want trump to be their number knominee. >> rubio's numbers have steadily gone up. do you back that surge? >> nothing to indicate there's a surge. there's a surge in the media for rubio but not a surge in the poll or on the ground. "the des moines register" has shown that. for four days he wasn't stagnanters declining. people are making a break from rubio to cruz. other candidates are moving to cruz. the reason is they think cruz is the one that can stop trump. on caucus night that's the argument that's going to be made. guys, who can defeat donald trump. if you want trump to be your

nominee vote for trump or one of the other candidates. if you want cruz you got to get behind cruz. >> you are behind him. we know your voting record. get out there and vote and your neighbors know your voting record. the mailer shams people going to t to the polls. the attorney general wasn't happy about this. are you? >> i haven't seen the mailer. i heard about the mailer. >> do you have a monitor. >> i do have a monitor. >> that's what it looks like. >> i think what the cruz campaign is doing they are doing everything they can to get people out in the caucuses to participate. the former secretary of state matt schultz is on our campaign. he serves as iowa state chairman. when i asked him about the mailer he said this is one of the same things we did in 2014 for get out the vote for the governorship or the u.s. senate race. so right now i think it's end of the game politics a little bit but it's going to come down to turn out, who gets their people

people who don't see ted cruz and donald trump as viable options. they believe there's a rubio surge. is that surge real? >> i think he's definitely picking up. the idea he could come in first is hard to believe. rick santorum he was gaining rapidly in the final days of the campaign back in 2012. you don't see that with rubio. he picked up from 10% to 15%. it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up with 20. >> so this is a donald trump voter guide. we'll show our voters. i got this this morning. super p.a.c. pretty slick and interesting probably accurate series ever attacks on trump point being out his past position on issues. describing him essentially as a liberal. is this stuff working? >> look at that poll we just saw. a lot of this has been around. clearly not working. still first in iowa.

people keep saying maybe ted cruz could surge late but maybe on caucus night he could overcome trump. if you look at that poll it's consistent with polling we've seen for months. it's the kind of polling we've seen for weeks. the idea he'll come on caucus night and beat trump i'm not convinced. i think trump is more organized in iowa than people give him credit for. >> he has the guy who ran santorum's campaign. are rereawe ready for what this means. we then go to new hampshire and south carolina. he's up in all of those states. this is an earthquake. it will redefine the republican party for a generation. am i overstating that? >> i think so. you got to let -- there's a lot of baseball left to play. on monday donald trump, he'll have eight delegates, ted cruz will have seven, marco rubio will have five. the question can donald trump

get to 50% of the delegates. if you look at these polls, ted cruz could win by 18 points. trump has got his supporters taking advantage of that. the question is, does trump gain momentum as other candidates have traditionally in the past. i think he does. i don't know how much. that momentum is based on media coverage. and trump is already at media saturat saturatation levels. >> it's not happening on the conservative side but on the democratic side. bernie sanders written. off as a boutique candidate. all of a sudden within striking distance of hillary. she's never won here. does they have a shot tomorrow? >> i think so. i've been spending a lot of time with hillary clinton and bernie sanders. you can feel within the room when you talk to his people they are with him. you talk to a lot of young people supporting him they say

this is the most dramatic iowa caucus of my lifetime. i'm 46. i think more hangs in the balance tomorrow than i've ever seen. both parties are really concerned about the potential outcome because you would see a reordering of what those parties stand for depending upon who wins. >> let's take a look at the polls. we hear how significant they are and how accurate they have been in the past. trump jumps out to a 5 point lead. filed by cruz with 23. rubio with 15. carson, his lowest number since may at 10. paul with 5. christie with 3, bush, fiorina, huckabee, kasich, santorum. kasich has left already. he went to new hampshire. looking at those polls. do you believe them? >> it's really hard to poll the caucuses,people actually change their vote on voting day.

at a caucus people make the case for their candidate and small percentage of voters are won over by that and that's why you see these results that don't match the final poll numbers. we saw it in the last cycle here when rick santorum who was apology -- polling third won. >> as we go into these numbers, ann settler has predicted it accurately nearly 20 times. donald trump has gone up since early january and ted cruz has gone down 8 since early december. the trump attack of cruz being born in candidate has worked? or is it something else? >> a lot of has happened in the last three or four days. the truth is, as you know, if you are over 40, you grew up

learning that if you weren't born in this country, you could not be president. that may or may not be true. the supreme court hasn't ruled on it. but it's clearly an attack that has worked. here's the other problem. how does cruz respond to any attacks on donald trump, having in effect been on his side in this race until very recently, basically in lock step with them, refusing to criticize him and trump goes after cruz, it's tough for cruz to say you know what, i haven't said anything until now, actually, this guy is a left wing for obamacare. it's a tough case given the fact he hasn't been making it for the last six months. >> let's go to the other side. hillary clinton seemed to be the inevitable nominee. let's look at these polls. to show you. clinton is at 45%. sanders 42%. o'malley is 3%.

they get in there and they get into groups and these caucus groups will stand for clinton, sanders or or male -- or o'malley. it really matters. where due doze those o'malley supporters are going to go? >> the o'malley -- it's hard to poll o'malley because he doesn't have enough support. >> they are going to go to the lincoln chaffee corner. >> hillary clinton has been a public figure for over 30 years. if you don't know what you think of her coming into the caucuses. it's unlikely you are going to decide at the caucuses. boy, if they can't be an elderly socialist like bernie sanders. if you beat hillary clinton,

race. they might be compelled to get it if she loses tomorrow. a lot is on the line. >> depending on what happens with the fbi investigation too. >> for sure. big complications for the candidates there in the state of iowa as voters make their picks in the caucus but how does the caucus actually work? >> peter doocy joins us more on that angle. >> candidates have had months to make their pitches to iowans, but the most important of all will be the one those hardcore supporters make to their friends and neighbors in the caucus rooms across the state. to participate in the democrat caucus, you got to be a registered democratic voter. both parties do things a lot differently. for republicans, they gather, listen to speeches from different candidates supporters

and then cast ballots and divvy up delegates. in the democratic caucus rooms, things are done a lot differently. people show up, go stand in the corner of the room where the rest of the people who back the candidate they like are standing. then if the candidates group isn't mustering up the minimum 15%, that group disbands and its members are kortd by people who like other candidates, hoping to boost their own guy or girl's numbers in the room. history going back to 1972 shows that if someone wants to win their party's nomination, they need to finish in the top 4 here in iowa. turn out is really important in this state because of the way the process works and the governor, terry branstad says he thinks a lot of independents will show up, register as either a republican or democrat tomorrow so they can support either trump or sanders. back to you in new york.

they drew a lot of people there. so that was part of this crowd. but when i pulled one my producer jake gibson, we couldn't find parking. we couldn't find where the event was. there was a line that snaked three or four blocks around the fieldhouse. jake finally said get out and i ran out of the car to get into the fieldhouse to find where i had to do my live shot. it was pandemonium. in addition to the 3,500 people inside, the fire marshall told us there had to be 2,000 people outside that they would not let in but god forbid there was a fire. the big question is are these people are going to show up tomorrow night? i don't want to scattering it. i'm seeing a lot more energy. hillary clinton events usually have 2 to 300 people. last night, she had an event of 1,100 people. >> let us ask about something tucker told us. since he's been in des moines,

less than 24 hours from right now till the nation's first vote and gop candidates rallying hard in iowa as the last poll shows the caucuses has donald trump neck and neck with senator ted cruz. rand paul is here now to react. what's the plan?

>> well, you know, we think we're doing quite well and better than indicated by the polling. i think they are underestimating a lot of people who came out for my dad. in the des moines poll, they asked who did you vote for in 2012, only a very small percentage said they voted for my dad. we think there's a lot of liberty voters out there that aren't being counted. we're doing really well with college students. that's been a big emphasis for us. we think they are under appreciated in the polls as well. >> i thought you had your best debate to date and that plays a role. you were going after ted cruz. that's what marco rubio just did with our own neil cavuto. >> if we're look to look at this "des moines register" poll, it does not appear to be hurting

you. what do you read into it. >> he's pivoting all his attack ads against me. his latest attack ad is deceitful because he's clipping my statement. he cut it in half, which is something -- >> you can't miss it. it's like every other end minute. >> it clips my statement in half to make it sounds like i'm for capping trade. >> when he used the term deceitful, are you finding the same thing with the cruz camp? >> i think cruz's problem is authenticity and that's what i pointed out in the debate, particularlien 0 the immigration issue. he says everybody is for amnesty except for him but it turns out he was for a form of legalization during the debate. our people are upset to him for not showing up to audit the fed. i worked on this bill for five years. we've been working on it for ten years. he was the only republican that missed the vote. i think that's going to hurt him with the liberty contingent of

voters. >> how about this? the secretary of state for the state of iowa has essentially scolded the cruz campaign because they sent out these controversial mailers that say among other things they have a warning at the top, warning of if you got it, you are in violation of -- you haven't been voting in the caucuses and essentially it says your individual voting history as well as your neighbors are public record, you better show up and get in line and encourage everybody else to vote as well. clearly it's a turn out the vote thing however the secretary of state says it's violates the spirit of the law and misrepresents iowa election law as well. what's going on with the cruz campaign if they are sending this out? >> you know, i think it's kind of creepy. it makes you think of washington politicians, career politicians who would do these creepy dirty tricks. i penkl think that a lot of voters will react to it and say what kind of person sends out

and tells me that i'm not showing up for votes particulars when ted cruz is the one who didn't show up to vote for audit the fed and a host of other things. i think people will be creeped out by thinking oh, my goodness, he's announcing to my neighbors how often i vote. if i got that, i would be mad enough to go out and vote for somebody else. >> yeah. it might get some perturbed voters there and the secretary of state is saying that's not something we can do. it can be purchased but for political purposes. the voters in iowa don't need to worry about that. iowa caucuses are unique in that neighbors go and can sway one another while they are debating and standing up for their candidates. what are you trying to do to get your supporters to win over other supporters? as we know, they make up their mind at the wiching hour. >> we have a little over 1,000

precincts chair. we have over a thousand of them with chairs who will show up and bring their neighbors and speak at the caucus for us. the other secret weapon we have is we have a bunch of college kids making phone calls. we think there's a chance we can way outperform the polls in iowa and surprise people. >> why should they caucus for you? >> i'm only the fiscal conservative because i'm the only one that's willing to look at spending across the board. the reason we have so much debt in our country, the right wants it for the military, and the left wants it for welfare. they get together and spend everything awm the time. i'm the one person on the stage who would actually balance the budget. >> rand paul joining us today from des moines. thank you very much and good luck tomorrow. >> thank you. there you go. and voter turnout is critical in the iowa caucuses.

rubio second best which could bode well for him. on the democratic side it's a tie, clinton 45, sanders 42. that three point edge is within the margin of error. o'malley is 3%. the caucus groups can migrate to different groups. the latest poll shows sanders slightly ahead of clinton as a she could had choice. bernie sanders has been drawing bigger clouds than hillary clinton for months and tomorrow it will be interesting to see if bigger crowds equal big turn-outs. sanders has been predicting if a lot of people turn out he will win tomorrow night. >> thank you very much. tucker, some of the data that's curious in this poll, ann selter did it and she's been accurately

predicteding the winner for many years. half of the republicans do not care that donald trump did not do the debate on thursday. and 77 percent said it made no difference for that governor terry branstad called for ted cruz to be defeated. do you find that interesting? >> the governor went after cruz because of ethanol. i'm grateful that voting is finally going to take place. i've been speculating about this election for a year. we're going to find out what the voters really think. no matter what happens, both are going to be more populous. if trump and sanders win, it's a full-on revolution. it's not exactly clear where it's going. you can't overstate how big that

will be. >> it will be get on the train or you are going to miss the train. you know what i think is under fire the polls in particular. we're straddling the world of landlines and the internet and a lot of polls like gallup said i'm not going to do it. it's too inaccurate. if these are inaccurate, they are done, unless they prove their new science works. >> or unless we find a better way to figure out voter intent. it's hard to do that. especially in the caucuses. they are not the same as elections. you never know change your mind at a voting booth. at a caucus, you are listening to your neighbors make a case for their candidates. and for voters, that changes their minds. you see these upsets you saw at the lack cycle, rick santorum going into the election was third. he won. boy, we really don't know is the truth as far as i'm concerned. senator ted cruz is under fire thork -- this morning.

he sent out this last-minute mailer saying voting violation at the top. he says your neighbor will know if you don't go to the polls. we're keeping track of that. iowa officials say that's not really the case. it's available for purchase but for political purposes. he's saying he's not going to apologize for it. >> listen, matt shuls is a former secretary of state, chairman of the campaign. saying these mailers are routine. the iowa party has done so in the past. i will apologize to nobody for using every tool we can to encourage iowa voters to come out and vote. >> well, some of the other candidates, tucker, are calling this a dirty trick. the secretary of state came out and said it's misleading, there's no such thing as election violations and his office never grades voters. we had rand paul on within the last hour.

you know you talked to him behind the scenes. he thinks this whole ted cruz mailer thing is creepy. >> i think it's kind of creepy. in fact, it makes you think of washington politicians, career politicians who kind of do these creepy dirty tricks. i personally think that a lot of voters will react to it and say what kind of person sends out and tells me that i'm not showing up for a vote particularly when ted cruz didn't show up to vote for audit the fed and a host of other things since he's been missing votes. people will be creeped out oh, my goodness he's announcing to my neighbors how i vote and trying to shame me. if i got that, i would be mad enough to go out and vote for somebody else. >> does rand paul have a point? >> i don't think it's a dirty trick. it's a little orwellian.

we have actual social science that voters can be shamed. this is part of senator cruz's fundraising efforts. it's wildly aggressive and towing the line at the same time. all of his emails have been -- it was something like my friend donald trump, i think that was the headline. you've got to open it. he's really pretty innovative in this way but you are apt to offend people when you go that far. it's a matter of taste. do you find it appalling or did you find it hilarious? creativity points or will it back fire. and hillary clinton bernie sanders -- bernie sanders has

crowds at the university of iowa. and hundreds of people on the outside they couldn't bring in. is this thumb going to truly and accurately -- enthusiasm going to translate into voters at the caucus? >> this is the point. hillary clinton is the candidate of the establishment, of the times editorial page, of the lobbying community, the corporate donators. and bernie sanders is the insurgent. he's the person young people are voting for. who is going to win? i personally think bernie has the edge on this. they are really worried in the hillary campaign for sure. >> given the fact that iowa works, you go into a big room and after speeches are made, you go into the corner of your candidate. given the fact that bernie sanders supporters are so vocal, there's a possibility they could persuade some friends and

they are getting busted. the man in davenport, iowa, he and his wife make $59,000 a year, he pays $28,000 a year for health insurance. he said half his salary. single moms are having to decide if they go to work, they lose all the benefits for the kids. if they don't go to work and take the benefits, their kids are okay, but everybody calls them, you know, welfare queens, which isn't fair to them, and so you have people who are frustrated because for the people at the very top, the economy works fine, and even when the stock market goes down, it doesn't affect their lifestyles but those folks standing out there on concrete floors in a factory, i tell you, it's not just their legs that are hurting every day. it's their pockets, their futures, and they know it, and they are frustrated that everybody gives them all these promises. nobody delivers. >> it seems to me no matter what happens, the republican and democrat party are going to change a lot after this

election? >> i hope that's true. look where the candidates get their money, they get it from the same wall street, hedge fund donors. it doesn't matter if they are democrat or republican. the words to remember are follow the money. you will find the reason things don't change is the money to the candidates don't change. same pipe, same source, different politicians, different parties, but it still comes down to politicians when they get elected, they have an obligation to take care of their donors and that's what happens and the people who are out here in places like iowa getting punched in the gut they are not the big donors. they don't get taken care of. >> i keep reading all of this speculation about you and donald trump. you are on stage with him at his event the other night, the night of the debate. there's speculation that you are going to endorse him. that you are traveling to arkansas to see him. what's your relationship with him? >> i have a wonderful

cracker barrel turning into the scene of an intense police chase. >> puts your hands up, right now! put your hands up! >> well, those officers catching a dangerous alleged criminal who ran inside the restaurant and arrested him without a problem. joining is now though police officers who were first on the scene. good morning, gentlemen. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. >> thank you for having us. >> thanks for keeping those people safe inside that cracker barrel restaurant. just a day or so before, you had seen the suspect fleeing from an apartment complex wanted on a felony charge. what happened before the cracker barrel incident? did you recognize him? >> it was actually a detective that recognized him. i wasn't actually on that particular call.

the detective that was there that day on tuesday when it happened recognized the subject that we ended up chasing. recognized that he had a felony warrant and basically got on the radio and advised us, we were in marked units and told us that he was in the area to go and try to stop the vehicle. >> you chased him in the car. a couple of tires get blown out before going into the cracker barrel. tell me what that moment was like as you were going in. >> really intense. it was pretty chaotic. he had just, you know, flipped the car he was driving over. he took off running. we gave chase. he got to -- when he was getting toward the cracker barrel, we knew that it was going to be a dangerous situation when you -- at that time of day, there was a lot of people eating at that time, so we knew we had to get to him before he hurt anybody and luckily he didn't and we were able to apprehend him inside the cracker barrel. >> officer gomez you get there moments later.

what's going through your mind trying to apprehend the suspect but also keep everybody inside that cracker barrel, inside the restaurant and the store that we know is connected, keep them safe? >> well, as i was coming into the store, actually, it was a citizen that advised the subject was armed at this point. we knew we had a very dangerous situation, so what i tried to do is just get eyes on the subject. approach from a different angle, that wi we have the front and rear covered. as we made the arrest, i just had to make sure that in case he tries to run and fight, we'll able to subdue him without injuring ourselves or anybody else. >> officer alvarez, do you think it was only a matter of time before this guy would have done something again if you haven't apprehended him? >> yes. i mean, it's obviously -- it's hard to put someone and say that he's going to keep, you know, re-offending, but we had a few

for the economy. for the last ninth year of recovery all we've had in terms of stimulus has been the federal reserve. has been doing quantitativeeasi rates. people are just desperate for some kind of fiscal stimulus, including tax reform, including rolling back of regulation, including for example changes to obamacare, infrastructure spending. these are the kinds of fiscal changes that people believe will move the needle on growth. 2.5% on a yearly basis it looks like that. look at last week to find out where we are right now. gdp came up, it was up .07%. durable goods down 5.7%. businesses are not investing in equipment. >> bernie sanders is a socialist who would tax people at 90%. i think the number is $1.6

trillion in new taxes that he wants to raise. >> free higher education. free pre-k. >> and taxes going way up and you say you are taxing the highest earners, you are not including small business. what is small business going to do when they get choked by higher taxes? are they going to hire new people? i don't think so. hillary clinton wants to raise taxes $1.1 triangle. -- trillion. >> we're focusing on iowa. next week it's going to be new hampshire. that's where john kasich is right now. he's a guest on your show. >> he's our lead guest. he's putting all his eggs in the new hampshire basket and saying okay i wasn't in the lead in iowa. i'm in the lead and i'm doing well in new hampshire. i'm going to double down in new hampshire. we'll talk about what that means for his overall campaign and the general election. you are speaking with rand paul.

out across the west, that's where all the action is. big storm moving across parts of the southwest. a really windy day into southern california that's going to cause some damage and power outages. then a lot of snow across the mountain elevation and this blizzard watch we have in effect across parts of nebraska and missouri river valley here, across parts of iowa. this is monday night into tuesday. take a look at how the day plays on monday. everything looks fine. evening hours, you start to see the storm move through here. little bit of snow coming in later on today and get ready, tuesday, we could be watching tornado outbreak from the same storm system. >> what? >> across the mississippi river valley from paducah toward memphis. >> this one storm on the north, it will be snow and ice and -- >> exactly. we haven't talked about that at all because we've been talking about the elections.

obviously, that's an important question. if donald trump or bernie sanders wins in iowa, can they run the table? on the democratic side, iowa has a great track record of predicting the nominee. barack obama bested hillary clinton in 2008 and credited iowa for the keys to the white house. john kerry upset howard dean in 2004 and he won the nomination. a governor named jimmy carter in 1976. waltermondale and al gore. all of them won the caucus and the nomination. since 1976, iowa got it wrong only twice. republican side, different story, steve doocy. iowa has predicted it right only twice. bob dole in 1996 and george w. bush in 2000. usually winning iowa is not predictive in terms of the republican nomination. >> because you are looking at

the historical perspective of it. it's not like the election where everybody goes to vote on caucus. this is done by the parties. for instance, george w. bush, the second time around, they didn't even have republican caucuses. same thing for ronald reagan. even though some say he won the second caucus, they didn't really have -- >> you are right. it's done differently. in the democratic party, people speak out and your neighbors know how you are voting. on the republican side, it's a secret ballot but it's only the first step. it's a proportional state. it's not a winner take allstate. then it will go to county and state conventions to actually allocate these delegates going forward. the point you are making is really important. it is not like a general election sponsored by the state. there are about 2,000 precincts or caucuses where these things will be held at great sounding names like you are talking about earlier today. it's a party thing. they have made it more modern.

they are now apps they can send the vote count to. we'll know between 11:00 and 12:00 and all the fox team will have the counts at that point but it's a party election in that sense, and it's the beginning of a long process and so donald trump and others are saying, listen, i can win iowa and i'm heading to new hampshire and south carolina. proportionate proportionately, donald trump is going to get, you know, perhaps a third, if he's as successful as the polls say. it's a long slog to the nomination for each and every one of them. >> it's all about bragging rights. in the republican party caucuses, what they do is they all get together in a room and party officials talk about the various candidates, then they vote in secret. >> secret ballots. >> with the democrats, you are in a big room, if you are for hillary, stand over here. o'malley, stand over here. for bernie -- which means they are some people who are

persuaded. hey, neighbor. why are you over there? come over to my side. >> that's why the second choices are very important. people do change. it's not a big field like the republican party and the republican party in iowa the second choices are less important going forward, but it's a matter of peer pressure, of shaming, of living with folks next door for the next four years who know exactly what you were thinking, why you were thinking, how you voted it, and that's an interesting dynamic in america. we don't have that. >> yeah, the smith family, thorough male people back. >> and they had weird reasons for it too. >> peter johnson. thanks for coming in on sunday. >> pleasure. we're continuing to countdown to the caucus. dr. ben carson are currently in fourth in the poll. the doctor is making a studio call. he joins us live next. if you have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis...

well, the iowa caucuses are tomorrow. the final poll shows that donald trump and senator ted cruz are neck and neck first and second. marco rubio third, and dr. ben carson with 10% of the vote according to that poll. at one point, he was leading in iowa. dr. carson, always great to see you. the numbers show that maybe you lost your evangelical supporters to ted cruz. is that how you see it? >> well, i think a lot of people have shifted, but i think a lot of those people are in the process of shifting back. i suspect there's going to be a pretty big surprise tomorrow. >> you are. is there any scenario dr. carson

where you wouldn't go onto new hampshire? >> yes, if i died. >> that's about it. okay. that won't happen. i have a good feeling. you say you feel something on the ground. in what respect? i know you have a huge ground game, but what are you hearing? >> well, you know, the various rallies and town halls we're going to, like last night. couldn't even get everybody into the overflow room. and people are just saying to me, you know, i am changing my mind. as soon as they get a chance to hear you. because the narrative that had been painted for them by a lot of pundits who say, carson's a nice guy, but he can't win so you're wasting your vote on him. now a lot of people are starting to see maybe it's not going to be a wasted vote after all. >> the president of the united states this week will be going to a mosque in baltimore. he said he wants to point out the muslim contribution to

america and america's past. how do you feel about that visit? >> i didn't catch the first half of who you said was coming. >> the president's visiting a mosque for the first time in his seven years. going on eight. in baltimore, how do you feel about that visit? >> i don't have any problem with him visiting a mosque. you know, but what i've said all along is that everybody is welcome in america. as long as they accept american values and american laws. and, you know, there are many muslims who accept that. i grew up in detroit. my play mates were muslims, but they were people who accepted the same values and principles that i did. there's no problem in that situation. >> and that's where he'll be on tuesday. dr. carson, you've shaken up your camp a couple weeks ago. tell me about your new team and how it changed your message. >> well, it's been spectacular,
