>> reporter: yes. we saw five candidates try to close the deal. this is the number-one newspaper in america now. it is "the des moines register." everyone wants to know what they have to say and what the inside story is on all the candidates. what's at stake? a victory. momentum. you've got delegates, sure. but for the most part, for some of these campaigns, there might not be a tomorrow. and for others, if you come in third or fourth, maybe for marco rubio, you might be saying that is like a win. and for donald trump and senator cruz, whoever doesn't win will feel like a loss. so there's a lot at stake. and this hour, governor terry branstad is going to be here from iowa. carly fiorina will be joining us. greta van susteren on a political panel. and you'll see where -- we'll find out what it is like. i couldn't believe, guys, how many people i went up to last night who said they have not decided what to do yet.

>> that's right. still shopping around. >> they are. absolutely. i was talking to my cousin, angie. she's a nurse in iowa. and she's one of the people who she's heard all the speeches, she's still shopping around. her friends have started to make their decision. i'll tell you what, rich edson is joining us from waterloo, iowa, a bit away from the city of des moines. he looks at the final day of campaigning before tonight, rich, 12 hours from now they start to caucus. >> reporter: that's right. undecided and unpredictability. that's why candidates are hoping that iowa's history of surprises continues tonight. two who are hoping that's not the case -- those who are leading in the republican polls, donald trump and senator ted cruz. and as a result of that, donald trump in the western part of the state yesterday at a couple of rallies continued focusing on cruz. >> he was born in canada. a lot of people saying he can't

even run for the election. we'll find out. to me, that's a big problem. i see so much dishonesty in politics, jerry. >> we're not finding donald trump's troops on the ground. they don't have an organization that is perceptible. >> reporter: on the democratic side, it's former secretary of state hillary clinton leading in the polls. bernie sanders right on her heels in that one. the sanders folks hoping for a late surge here in iowa. they have a commanding lead in many of the new hampshire polls, and they're hoping that momentum, if they win here and win new hampshire, will take them deep into the nominating process. this is a state, the caucusing begins this evening. and of course, we might find out a winner tonight, or we might not. four years ago, it was mitt romney who was declared the winner. then a few days later, we figured out what it was rick santorum who had barely won. we could get a surprise tonight or in a couple of weeks. who knows. back to you. >> rich, thank you very much. that is -- was great to have the feather in his cap for rick santorum. but you missed out on the momentum mitt romney gained. >> absolutely.

one factor the candidates didn't see coming, a giant blizzard that could have an effect on turnout. >> that's right. our meteorologist is tracking the storm for us. what is this going to hit, maria? >> well, we're expecting some of the worst conditions into the overnight hours tonight. but i would not rule out a couple of rain or snow showers. a little bit earlier than had been predicted. i'll show you that computer model run in a second. first, i want to share the temperatures with you. they're going to be quite cold across some areas, especially northern iowa where they're going to be ranging from the teens into the 20s. southern parts of the state, suddenly temperatures will be above what's normal for this time of the year. that is welcome news. here comes our storm system. it's going to be battering early today parts of the rockies, then it quickly moves eastward. take a look at what happens by 9:00 p.m. central time. some of the green popping up on the map is some rain. and maybe even if it's cold enough, we could see snow showers. again, the worst of the conditions as we head into overnight tonight and into your tuesday. >> okay. so it should be clear driving to the hawkeye cauceye, but late

some trouble? >> yeah. and we can't forget about people readying their homes, animals, crops, and going to get groceries, too. >> absolutely. brian, as we go into the caucuses tonight starting at 7:00 central time, let's take a look at the polls. these were released by the "des moines register" of likely republican voters and caucus-goers tonight. it's not surprising the top three, we've gone over the last week, hasn't changed. donald trump, five points over ted cruz. and marco rubio, eight points behind ted cruz. >> and brian, this was done -- >> reporter: no doubt about it. i just want to say looking at the poll, this is what i found. i mean, if they are true to what they're saying, if the numbers are strong, it's amazing how the camps are beginning to spin it their direction. for example, governor christie says i'm going to be the number-one governor. with rubio, i just want to finish strong. with trump, i got to win this, but i don't have to win this thing. for ted cruz, he kind of boxed

himself in. he's got to win this thing. and last night, he almost sounded evangelical, but the one thing is that i think must be driving the candidate nuts is so many people seem to be willing and open to being persuaded to doing something else which is kind of what frank lutz found out. >> shift will cause you to flip from one to another? >> over the last three days, i've gone from trump. then we watched the debate where he didn't show up. i was a huge cruz supporter. i'd seen him in person. after megyn kelly showed him that video of his bill and amendment, and he brought it to 38 words and kept going back and forth, i didn't see him as honest anymore. now i'm with marco rubio. >> you went to three candidates in the last 48 hours? >> yep. >> there's a word for. that what it is -- >> it's not flip-flopping. >> there's a word for that. how likely are you to stay with marco rubio? >> 100%. i was able to see him in person last weekend and ask a direct question about ply family and

their security -- my family and their security and the way he answered with my 10-year-old with me made me solidify him as my candidate. >> i know some you like trump. you're nodding your head. >> yeah. i switched to trump. as a small business owner, i think he gives me the best opportunity to better my business and leave a legacy for my family. >> people still shopping around. what's interesting, though, apparently in iowa late last night, the republican chairman of the party out there sent a memo to all 1,682 precincts and said, you know, something's going on. we need more supplies. he said on a normal day or two before the caucuses, we might get four or five calls. we're getting 100 an hour. going -- go out and get more paper, more ballots, all this stuff you need. the weather's going to cooperate. so it looks like the people of iowa, they've been listening so long to the robo calls and seeing the commercials, they want to do something about who's going to be the next president tonight starting -- >> right. circle the wagons and start printing more of those voter

registration cards, too. a lot of these individuals who are supporting particularly trump and bernie sanders are first-time caucusgoers. if there is a record turnout or a large turnout, a lot of pundits are saying it will sway in their favor. >> reporter: the exact numbers, guys, basically 120 is good. 155 is great, and 155 and over with -- which congressman king talked about last night, a rock star here, goes to donald trump's category. in the big picture, you have the cruz people who know who you are and if you need a ride to get to the caucus. and the donald trump people who know roughly who you are, and you've got to get there on your own because he's going to be moving to new hampshire. we'll see what the strategy is that works. >> listen, i talked to a great political analyst, my wife, last night. she said, i don't know, i think there's going to be some surprise tonight. so it's going to be an exciting day. thanks for joining us on this first day of february. and joining us with headlines

19-year-old natalie keepers faces charges of disposing of the body. 13-year-old nicole lovell went missing last wednesday. her body was recovered in north carolina on saturday. police aren't saying a lot now but do say that lavelle knew eisenhower, and he used that to his advantage in that little girl's murder. a shame. minnesota governor mark dayton rushed to the hospital overnight after collapsing during an event honoring political volunteers. a spokesman says the democrat was feeling pain and pressure in his lower back shortly before losing consciousness. it was a fainting spell. they say it was most likely caused by dehydration. doctors are keeping the 69-year-old in the hospital as a precaution. his team saying he's in good spirits. and the broncos and panthers arrived in the bay area for super bowl 50. take a look at that. if the panthers went straight to the field, they might not have felt very welcome. that's because the ground crew forgot to paint the end zone. aw. the broncos' logo was painted in

african-american vote. what do you mean? >> i think it's so sad whether it comes to the black vote. blacks have shown a slavish support for the democrat party for over 50 years. part of me wonders if the republican party should even bother asking for the black vote because black americans seem to like being political dummies. there's -- you know, we're the only race that has voted lock, stock, and barrel for the same party for over 50 years. so you know, it's really on lockdown. you know what, people -- hillary clinton is already owning the black vote. and i think she's owning it because, oh, she was married to the first black president. i mean, that's all democrats have to do. it's a sad state of affairs for blacks when all they have to do is pander an insult to black americans day in and day out. it's like we've given up on ourselves economically by voting for democrats. >> i understand you told one of our producers when we were talking about the segment yesterday, blacks don't care about policies.

if they don't care about policies, what -- what does that mean? >> black americans only care about policies mildly if a black conservative runs. that's the kiss of death. if a black conservative runs, a black candidate like carson, herman cane, you can kiss the black vote good-bye in my opinion. automatically blacks will call you an uncle tom, dismiss you outright. they might scrutinize your policies a little bit. but isn't it funny, steve, that when a black liberal runs like barack obama, they say, okay, we'll vote for you. we'll be dumb, stupid. we're going to keep voting for you even though our lives are worse under the first black president. >> just because there's a "d" after their night. >> right. and the race card, steve. i can be a black liberal, and black voters won't question my policies. isn't that that anesthetic? can't we do better -- pathetic? can't we do better? >> check out "the con job: he democrats gave us crime,

up. i'll stay on the line with you the entire time. >> they're handcuffing him. >> good. >> the investigation turns into how the inmates broke out of their cells without anyone noticing. authorities trying to fix the security lapses that allowed them to escape. talk about divine intervention here. this is quite a story. a nun saves a 74-year-old man's life after he was pinned under this tree for more than two hours. the nun was outside praying. she was at her massachusetts convent when she heard the man's cry for help in the woods. she ran to the rescue and then called 911. officials say her call came just in time. the victim's leg was hurt, but he is otherwise expected to be okay. and this morning, you may ask yourself how exactly does the caucus work. there is a new video showed with the lego guys that explains how the democrats do it. watch this. >> they form preference groups by physically joining other supporters of the candidate. >> if a candidate doesn't get at

are here, shaking a lot of hand and showing that they're relatable. they understand some of the issues that our iowa folks are going through. so that is going to be very important. i think the winners will be the ones showing great concern for the people of iowa. >> we keep hearing from others that ted cruz you hhas no suppo in the senate. does cruz have senior citizens. >> i think all of our candidates have friends, obviously. you've seen a number of folks out on the campaign trail with them here in iowa. again, you know, we're blessed to have a great slate of candidates. i look to the left -- >> look at you. >> i'm not seeing -- >> you're not bringing it inside -- >> i'm not. >> how many senators have endorsed ted cruz? >> none that i know. a great friend of mine, steve

king, on the road -- >> he introduced him yesterday. >> yes. people love steve king. he's from the northwest part of the state. very conservative area. he has a number of friends there. >> how much pressure on you to endorse, and how important is your military background to the people of iowa in defense? >> endorsement, i've gotten a lot of calls. i'm not going to endorse in the race. i think it's great that the folks of iowa are paying attention to what's important. you brought up military. i think national defense is one of those top issues with iowa voters. so those speaking about what we're going do with isis, how we address north korea, what we do with iran, i think those are important issues for a number of iowans. we need to know what the candidates feel about that. >> you've got really interesting numbers from the democratic side. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, top two. hillary clinton doing well with female voters across the country. but there's an age cutoff.

bernie sanders, younger women support bernie sanders, not hillary running a self-consciously woman-oriented campaign. what does this tell us? >> i think that what you're seeing is hillary coming out to be that old establishment candidate. same old, same old. bernie is really exciting those younger voters. again, i'm asking voters to delve in behind policies. we were talking about free college earlier. well, free, what does free mean? i don't think a lot of these younger folks understand that somebody will pay for that. somebody will pay. >> all right. senator joni ernst who gave me the secret to why she's up early. she gave me this -- >> no way. >> yes. inside that story. >> you going drink it? >> yeah. >> we'll see. i don't know. >> thank you very much. >> i can't operate a motor vehicle and do so. >> thanks so much. >> thank you. coming up ahead, what to know -- want to know what i did yesterday? i hung out in a bar with chris christie and went to a house party with rick santorum and went to a rally. i don't know. i'll review it all in a moment.

hold a rally in waterloo, iowa. trump has been talking an awful lot about senator ted cruz over the last couple of days. it is he and cruz who are running first and second in the latest polling here in iowa. and with that, the two have been focusing their attacks on one another. >> he was born in canada and a lot of people are saying he can't even be running for the election. so we'll find out about that. to me that's a big problem. i see so much dishonesty in politics. >> we're not finding donald trump's troops on the ground. they don't have an organization that is per september ill. it's interesting. there are a lot of candidates who spent more time in iowa than i have. we've spent a ton of time in iowa, a ton of time in new hampshire, in south carolina. a ton of time all throughout the southern states, the super tuesday, s.e.c. primary. a ton of time in nevada. we are running a national campaign. the strength of our campaign is the grassroots, though. >> trump skeptics have been asking whether these trump event

goers will become caucusgoers. we ran into a number of them last evening in western iowa at a trump event and they say they will. >> i plan on caucusing for mr. trump because i feel what he says. he's a doer, and he's going to fix this country. and we need to fix this country. >> strong man. he's different than everybody else. like i said he's very open. >> i think that those people that have heard trump will be out there in numbers. i really do. >> just because trump and cruz are leading in the polls, iowa caucus history dictates we could have someone else at the top when this is all over and it might not happen tonight. you might find out in a couple of weeks. that's what happened, of course, last time when we all thought mitt romney had won and in fact it was rick santorum. for the democrats over to peter doocy. >> and, rich, if you're just to read the text of hillary clinton's final pitch to iowa

voters and nobody told you who said it, you'd probably think it was from bernie sanders. she is now using a lot of the same language that has made sanders very popular here in iowa, specifically about wall street reform. now with just hours to go until the caucuses. >> we can't let the big banks ever hurt the economy again. i went to wall street long before this became an issue and told them that they were going to be hurting us unless they changed what they were doing. we are not letting companies get away with doing that, especially ones that we have helped to be able to stay in business in the first place. >> clinton and her supporters are also attacking sanders, and that got sanders upset. he's now accusing clinton allies of spreading inaccuracies about his plans, especially regarding women's rights and health care. and sanders is casting these caucuses as a chance for iowans to change the entire course of the race by making him the winner.

>> not only will the entire country be looking at iowa, actually much of the world will be looking at iowa. and what they will be looking at, it's not just to see who wins the caucus. what they will really be looking at is to see whether or not iowa is prepared to move this country away from establishment politics. >> so, how excited are democrats in des moines for the caucuses? well, martin o'malley is going to have an event at this coffee shop 8:30 a.m. local time, and when we pulled up at 5:00, it was completely packed, the parking lot was full, and nobody inside can even begin to take the first winner of 2016 until 7:00 tonight. back to you in new york. >> all right, peter. >> the wind certainly is at bernie sanders' back, too. he just had 1700 people at a rally last night. and his campaign is saying they just raised $20 million in january alone. small donations, average $27

apiece. >> brian and tucker let's talk a little bit more about hillary clinton. you know, this is the big caucus day and she's got a problem because she's answering questions about the e-mail server. many say it was an illegal situation, she got hacked, all sorts of stuff like that. back in march she said, you know, first of all, none of the stuff on my server was secret. now we know that many, many secrets were on it. now she's trying to spin it this way. when she got it, when she sent it, it wasn't classified at the time. and, in fact, yesterday she was talking to who-tv in des moines and explained it this way, how after the fact they classified it. >> the best explanation i heard of this, i heard yesterday in des moines from a man i was shaking hands with. he said, this is like you drive through the same intersection for four years, and the speed limit is 35. then you move out of town, and they change the speed limit to 25, and then they start sending tickets to people who drove while the speed limit was 35 or

over. but the problem with this metaphor is not the metaphor itself necessarily, it's the timing. she said it was yesterday. but here she is three weeks ago saying she heard the same thing. >> what? >> -- would be like somebody in the department of transportation setting speed limits, let's say the speed limit was 35. and then retro actively the police say well you know what, that speed limit should have been 25. so, let's go back and look at anybody who drove down that road and exceeded 25. >> okay so tucker, maybe she heard it yesterday. and then again she heard it three weeks ago exactly the same way. >> doesn't matter when she heard it. it's untrue factually. everyone in washington knows and it is a fact that information is never retro actively classified. this is not true. ask anybody in the intel community. she's doing this not because she believes it or any of us believe it but because her donors are really, really worried that the

wheels are coming off. she's losing to a 74-year-old socialist. if she's going to go down the e-mail scandal her money will dry up. that's the audience. >> let's look at the surface. ed henry realized he heard this story before, was able to talk about it last night, and now here's another example of can she ever fully tell the truth? this is why her trust levels are underwater. i talked to someone yesterday, but yet three weeks ago you had the same story, the same story being repeated to you and it seemed like yesterday? do you need ginkgo biloba to remember who told you what. do you have a problem with three weeks and 24 hours? it makes people say why would you make up a metaphor, use an analogy, if it's inaccurate. especially when the sign on bernie sanders bus, "trust." he knows where to go. if sanders wants to win, he'll use this tape and he'll say listen, you going to vote for that? that's what you're going to get. >> we need to point out, a lot of politicians in washington, d.c. use private e-mail

accounts, but she's the only one we know of, tucker, who actually bought her own machine for her own server. but ultimately, the big question is, do voters really care? >> if voters begin to understand that highly classified information was obtained by our enemies, foreign intelligence services, which is the operating assumption of everyone in the u.s. government, that's a big deal. we're at war and the chinese or the russians or whomever are reading her e-mails, that's a big deal. >> in the age of edward snowden and wikileaks, we have yet to see proof that things have gone out. if that comes full circle it's a brand-new game. >> all right, guys. and if there's 22 e-mails so top secret that they can never see the light of day. >> ever. >> and she continues to say that this is partisan politics, well it's the state department that's under the white house that's run by a democrat. so how does that argument even square? >> it's kind of a mess. all right we're going to be talking more about this and caucus day on this, the 1st day

if we can win here, if we win in iowa, everyone's talking about it, we can run the table for the first time ever. we can run the table. >> all eyes are on iowa this morning as we take a live look at our fox news headquarters in des moines. if a candidate makes it in iowa will they make it everywhere? fox news legal analyst peter johnson jr. is here with hawkeye state bragging rights really translate to a party nomination. >> good morning. hear donald trump talking about running the table kind of las vegas language. let's look at what the history is on the democrat side and the republican side. on the democrat side, iowa has a great track record of predicting the nominee. barack obama, bested hillary clinton, in 2008. and credited iowa for the keys to the white house. john kerry upset howard dean in

2004, and won the nomination. and a governor named jimmy carter in 1976. walter mondale in 1984 and al gore in 2000 all won the caucus and the nomination. so it's since 1976 iowa got it wrong only twice with tom harkin and dick gephardt winning. >> okay. and then on the republican side, how good of an indication is winning iowa? >> it's different. on the republican side iowa has predicted it right only twice. bob dole in 1996, and george w. bush in 2000. usually winning iowa is not predictive in terms of the republican nomination. >> okay. >> so we hear donald trump saying listen, i'm ahead there. i'm ahead in new hampshire. i'm ahead in south carolina based on this iowa win, i may be able to run the table for the next three. going forward. >> that's what he's hoping for, of course. >> so the quirky thing that is iowa caucus, it's done differently on the republican and democratic side. >> it is. and we have to keep in mind,

it's a primary. it's not a general election. it's run by the parties. so the democrats run it like this. voters break into groups to declare support for a candidate. candidates have to receive 15% of the total vote. supporters of candidates who don't meet that number can either join a number group or choose not to participate at all. in the state 44 delegates are at stake. now, republicans caucus differently. supporters of each candidate give a brief speech. voters mark ballots, secret ballots, which are counted and communicated to the state party by a new app. 30 delegates are at stake there and the delegates are awarded proportionally based on the statewide vote. and the statewide vote based on some predictions could be really big. the only thing that could bring it down is the potential blizzard moving in through iowa later today. >> and all the democratic campaigns and republican campaigns will have representatives there, and will be able to make an argument. and on the republican side yes it's done on a secret ballot.

you can still be influenced by your neighbors, can't you? >> big time. shaming factor is big. peer pressure is big. and the ability to communicate and convince and persuade up close like we are minutes before you vote. no electioneering in any other state. but today, in iowa, electioneering, personally close, up front and personal. >> deciding at the witching hour and it could be more important. the debate going on at the actual caucus site than all the ads and all the rallies and all the television interviews. peter johnson jr. thank you so much for clearing that up for us. here's what's coming up on the program, now that we know how the caucus works, who's going to get the votes? that's the big question mark this morning in all the undecided voters. where are they going to go? our political panel has their predictions coming up next. and a little girl gets scared by a big shadow?

welcome back to des moines. the latest polls show 35% of the state's voters could still be persuaded to change their vote on caucus day and what impact will the undecided voters have on the overall results? got a great panel here to weigh in. senior writer david is here wide left. zeke miller is in the middle, political reporter, also a political reporter with the -- with "time." and jason noble is over here, this is his beat, "des moines register." joycen with you, in terms of the

undecided, i'm stunned how many are still undecided. >> kind of a long tradition in the caucuses of going in, even to caucus night with an open mind, and kind of wanting to be persuaded by the candidate speeches and the things that you hear in the precinct. >> and of course, more choice on the republicans, right? >> absolutely. >> so -- >> and not necessarily talking about undecided but persuadable. maybe going in with a favorite. >> persuadable by the way they got up and the way they caucus? >> absolutely. it's really on the democratic side you're talking about people voting with their feet, going to different corners of the room. and they're going to he is identify, you know. they might shift allegiances. particularly when you're talking about martin o'malley voters. >> martin o'malley voters? because you know they're not going to have the 15% in order to keep their vote. so they're going to be going one way or another. >> certainly in a lot of caucuses or in other cases you're going to see hillary clinton and bernie sanders supporters trying to keep martin o'malley alive in order to prevent the other candidate from getting an extra delegate in that precinct.

so there's a lot that has to happen on the republican side -- on the democratic side, that doesn't take place on the republican side. >> but traditionally, if you're undecided at this late in an election, you may not even participate. frankly, a significant portion of people who said they're undecided may not participate. now, if you're down to two candidates, a lot of republicans are still choosing between trump and cruz. cruz and rubio. they've got it narrowed down. they're more likely. but if you're still undecided completely, you may not even show up. >> wow, that's a very interesting take. because we're talking about over 200,000 for democrats and over 150,000 would be a great showing for republicans. let's talk about the possibility of an upset. if he pulls this off, this would be one of the biggest upsets ever. >> i think that's right. that statement from him was part of kind of the expectation setting game here. if he sets this up to be a historic victory for him, that kind of takes the pressure off the win and makes the victory seem bigger. >> don't you think it would be a big upset?

>> absolutely you're talking about a democratic candidate -- >> he was trumped by 40 points -- >> and also hillary clinton has been the presumptive front-runner for almost eight years. to knock her off would be a big deal. >> now we have to win. the expectations have changed in the last week. or in the last two weeks, i'd say he closed the polls. everyone thought he had momentum. now if hillary wins, it's big for her. it's bigger if he loses now. >> quick on the right. i thought rubio played this brilliantly. he never said he was going to win. he could come in third and say listen, no big deal. but whoever loses between trump and cruz will feel like a loser. >> i think that's right. yeah, you know, there's the things are three tickets out of iowa. rubio is playing hard to be that third ticket. who loses in that one-on-one between trump and cruz, that's very damaging. >> is the rubio surge real? >> it absolutely is when you look at it on the ground, certainly in the polling we've seen some bumps. but also what we saw in the last with the des moines register

poll over the weekend isn't much the campaign from the super pacs are seeing an even higher bump for him in the polls. almost 20% in some of those internal private polling. so he's one of those people to look out and expect to see a strong finish. >> can rubio get to 20%? i think that's the number, that's a big number. if he comes out of iowa in third place with 20% that's a big ticket. if he's at 15 and stays 10 to 15 points behind cruz and trump i think that's a tougher sell for him. >> right. >> and i know trump said yesterday for the first time i can remember, i don't have to win iowa, but it would be really hard to stop me if i do win iowa. >> right. more and moerks expectations there. >> right. guys, great job. it's going to be exciting and we're going to get some answers maybe as soon as 9:00 eastern time as they start voting at 7:00. meanwhile, so for jason, zeke and david, great job. straight ahead when we come back i'll take you behind the scenes, including a stop at the breakfast bar without peer in iowa and can someone please get me a coffee. >> i got you right here. you're all good.

they've used just their touch tone phone. press nine. the number of such and such. there was a possibility of human error. that's not going to be a problem this time. microsoft promises. >> yeah but you still have to plug your information in to the app, and it's a human who's plugging in the information. so it can still be argued. >> talking about amazing -- talking about the execution from the fire house, the bar, getting to microsoft and converting it. bill hemmer thinks we could have the answer by 10:00 eastern time about where this thing is going to come. which could be flat-out amazing. look at the state of this state. >> right. or 9:00 p.m. eastern. a little over 3 million people in the state caucuses are much harder to historically take a long time to figure out what the answer is. we didn't find out that santorum was the winner last time until the next day as you remember. and it hurt his momentum like many would argue. it's amazing we're going to know probably by 9:00 if there's a clear winner. >> on both sides.

are people out there that are looking for potential bombs or nuclear material that could be smuggled up through there. it's a legitimate threat even though it's sensational. >> in addition to that, they also vowed to hit spain, as well. and the weird part about this is, out of revenge for having spain crushed muslim rule more than 500 years ago. so this is an outfit that carries a grudge. >> well there's no doubt about it. you see this group, and other extremist groups like that. they're trying to get back to glory days, if you will, of islam and of course islam was thriving in southern spain. but they were beat back and then they were beat back in the battle in france and they use this as a rallying cry as well as religion to galvanize their group. >> i know you did a poll in your congressional district and the number one issue was national security, and who is going to keep us safe ultimately. the night of our debate on thursday night, there was a google trends poll asked people

across the world who they thought would be the best leader to defeat isis, and 30% way at the bottom you can see marco rubio. 23% at the bottom you can see it's ted cruz. 16%, say it's donald trump. how do you feel about those top three candidates? >> well i think it's a great question, steve. i'm now running for congress in the second district because my congressman is not seeking re-election. national security is the biggest issue and i'm hearing that that's the biggest issue around the country. i think it's extremely important. let me first thank god we have rough and tough and smart men and women out there who are fighting for us around the clock while we sleep at night. but they need leaders. and we need leaders. and i think the american people intuitively want a leader who understands that they will risk themselves or the political careers for us. and what i'll say about the top three i'm hearing good elements out of all of them but we need a leader who understands the isis propaganda, and that's the new threat that they make on us because of technology. but also, american grand

strategy that they understand when america retreats that we create vacuums. we're not talking about nation building or anything like that we're talking about understanding foreign policy and how forward we need to go and america's leadership in the world. i'm hearing good things out of rubio out of that. strong leadership out of trump, out of cruz. it's going to be interesting to see what happens tonight. >> absolutely will be. and we'll have all the coverage here on fox news channel. scott, one of the things is, the reason isis has been so insidious is because of social media. you know, with your smartphone they're going to be using a smartphone app tonight to figure out you know, who the winner is. if you use smartphones for a million different things, diabolical in the case of isis and al qaeda and the other groups that are trying to kill us, and they're so good at targeting disenfranchised people who are looking for something and they pull them over to their side and what do we have from our state department? we've got some bureaucrats in foggy bottom and they're sending out some things on instagram and that's going to solve all the problems. right? >> absolutely. it's pretty ridiculous when you

think about it. look the same technology that created justin bieber, if you will, is available to those folks as well, too. we want to see a leader who needs to get a handle of encountering a narrative online. they're able to use social media to find the needles in the haystacks that may one, already agree with them, or two be easily manipulated to do bad things. in america we have toout lone w. you have to have a leader who understands technology. who understands how we counter a narrative to deal with this problem that's emerged and happening, and is a threat right now. i mean you have law enforcement in our country training about dealing with suicide vests and suicide bombers and stuff like that. this is the new reality and we need a leader who understands that, that gives confidence to the american people and to those out there fighting the fight every day. >> the people of iowa are going to start caucusing 12 hours and 123 minutes from height now. all right scott taylor thank you very much for joining us today from virginia. >> always a pleasure. thank you. >> all right. meanwhile, just hours before

now people are going to start gathering all across the state of iowa to caucus. as you look at the very latest "des moines register" poll, it looks like 10% about is undecided. only 10%. but just under a half of all of the people on the republican side could be persuaded to change their notes. >> yeah, in fact we saw some of that happening before our very eyes last night on the kelly file with a franklins poll group. let's look. >> what caused you to shift? what caused you to flip from one to another? >> over the last three days i've really gone from trump, then we watched the debate where he didn't show up and i was a huge cruz supporter. i've seen him in person. and then after megyn kelly showed him that video of his bill, and amendment, and he brought it down to 38 words, you know, and kept going back and forth with that i just didn't see him as honest anymore so now i'm with marco rubio. >> so you went to three different candidates in the last 48 hours? >> yep. >> there's a word for that. i don't know what it is. >> it's not flip-flopping.

>> but there's a word for that. and how likely are you to stay with marco rubio? >> 100%. i was actually able to see him in person last weekend and asked him a direct question about my family and their security and the way he answered it with my 10-year-old with me it made me really solidify why i would choose him as a candidate. >> i know some of you here like trump so you're nodding your head. >> i switched to trump as a small business owner, i think he gives me the best chance to better my business and leave a legacy for my family. >> all right. tucker and brian, so people are still shopping around. >> and some of them make up their minds at the caucus site, which is amazing. i got to say, though, we've always heard that the more time you spend in iowa the better you do. some of the candidates who spent the most time in iowa are at the bottom of the pack. chris dodd you'll remember moved to iowa and didn't even rate. it's -- i think we need to rethink our assumptions. >> governor huckabee said if donald trump wins iowa it remakes the rules on how -- >> sure. >> here's the other thing. cruz has drilled down on the homes and people who need rides

to caucus. donald trump has no idea who needs a ride. he's talking generally to his huge crowds saying you better do this. even if you have 104 degree temperature, bottom line is we leave here, dynasty politics possibly over with jeb and hillary struggling at the very least despite spending a lot of money. >> totally, 100%. and you're really going to have a difference between cruz and rubio are going to be locking horns along with trump for the rest of the way as long as they're in there. >> i read this morning an item in the hill talking about ground game and it actually said don't underestimate donald trump's ground game, because he has hired a number of good leaders who have done this before without a doubt the best infrastructure goes to ted cruz. he's got a county chairperson in each of the 99 counties. they've got 12,000 volunteers. they make 2,000 door knocks a day and 20,000 phone calls a day. as well. so, ted cruz has that number advantage. but then again, the trump people are very, very motivated. >> they've got the twitter advantage, too. in the way the technology is

and this is great. >> it is great. >> just look at this. the front page of the des moines register. caucus, finally going to vote. instead of just polls. and they're very excited here. >> and the thing that must be so agonizing is that they know that there's so many persuadables, so many undecideds, if they do just sleep in one day, if they don't perform well on stage that could be the difference because you're talking about 120,000 people. >> yeah. it's all about turnout, getting out the vote. and you know, i think that these republican leaders are saying that they expect on the gop side it to be a really big turnout. they're not afraid of the weather. they think the weather is going to come at midnight or later. so, you know, it could be historic on the gop side. >> absolutely. >> here in des moines i keep running in to democrats, prominent ones i know from washington who have flown in, asked by the hillary campaign at the last minute to help get out the vote. is that a sign of panic? >> yeah. i think they look at those bernie sanders events andist amazing. i went to one the other day,

3,000 people, and -- >> last night 1700. >> and it's excitement. and then i went to a hillary clinton event, and it was, you know, it was about 200 people, and you know she obviously has her spiel but it's not really the same momentum, the same excitement it doesn't seem like on the bernie side. >> which when it comes to the caucus, guys, that's what you need. you need excitement. you need to be motivated. once you get in that room you got to withstand people coming at you telling you to change your vote. >> the most recent poll that we have comes to us from bloomberg and the des moines register. we want to take a look at this. how everybody stocks up. trump is at 28%. 5% over ted cruz at 23%. rubio at 15%. carson at 10%. paul 5%. christie 3%. bush 2%. fiorina 2%. huck by, kasich, santorum and uncommitted all at 2%. 3% are not sure. the very same poll is suggesting that senator marco rubio may have the most room to grow because of the favorability

ratings. bret, i want to get your thoughts on this. why do these numbers matter? >> well he has the most upside. the most room to grow. the most places to go. you know, anecdotally you talk to people here and they say rubio's doing well. but listen, it's all about who gets out there. >> sure. >> i just tuned in to the weather on the local affiliate, and it was commercial after commercial, back-to-back-to-back-to-back and there were two rubio ads. there was a bernie ad. and a hillary ad before we got to the weather. and, so on that sense i'm sure iowa's really going to be relieved when we get to wednesday. >> are there -- is there people that you think that the word is, bret, from your sources, that are not going to move on to new hampshire if they don't get the result? i mean, there's a lot of people i think that are running out of money, and need to see results. >> yeah. i think the field will be win knowed. and when you get to new hampshire that result will winnow the field even more before you get to south carolina. and the question is whether

there is, you know, an establishment candidate that somehow coalesces the rest of that lane of the field. >> what does hillary say if she loses tonight? she's the most famous woman on planet earth and by many measures one of the best loved. if she loses to a 74-year-old socialist in the first contest, how does she explain that? >> maybe she's explains it by the des moines register poll that says that 66% of democrats or something like that, more than 60% are fine with a socialist president. if there's a state that fits bernie sanders, it's probably iowa. but, i think that it will still be a big loss for hillary clton. but what's amazing is hillary clinton is -- wants to be the third term not of her husband, of barack obama. if you are to listen to her. i am surprised, personally, that she's embraced the obama administration like she has. >> well, i think she is looking towards that side of the democratic party. here you have 90-plus percent white population.

new hampshire, 92%. and it's a neighboring state for bernie sanders. in south carolina and the rest of the country, it's more like the democratic party, which is, you know, 54-46. and i think she is trying to embrace president obama's coalition. >> do you think the firewalls are what they're calling the southern states, the s.e.c. primary, is as strong for her as her aides say it is? >> it seems like it. but talking to brit hume last night momentum matters. and you know, at some point, if you don't post a "w," it starts to turn. and firewalls go away quickly. >> yes. >> rudy giuliani's sort of firewall never materialized. >> such a good point. that's exactly right. >> and bret by the way, hillary clinton was on all the morning shows this morning. apparently she's too busy to stop by fox, but she was asked about how closely she is linked to this president's record and this is what she said over on another channel.

>> seems like one of the differences, you are embracing president obama's legacy. and i was at an event for bernie sanders last night and he says, i'm a supporter of president obama, but i find the last eight years to have been disappointing. why is he wrong? >> well, look, i've had a lot of experience, i think that what president obama inherited, an economy that was in the ditch, he doesn't get the credit for pulling it out. i'm a progressive who actually likes to get things done. not just talk about it, but deliver results for people. >> and, bret, her very ownrtmen e-mails because they are so top secret, yet that question was not even asked. the e-mail scandal was not even a topic raised. why do you think that is? >> yeah, well that's pretty interesting. because now even bernie sanders is raising this. >> it's serious. >> it's serious. you know, i asked him on the trail just last week at the end of last week, do you regret saying i don't care about her

damn e-mails? and he said, no. he didn't. but, now, it's a very serious issue. i think that you're going to see that e-mail issue play heavily, obviously in the general election, but the question is whether she gets there. >> so is this a play for donors? when hillary clinton gets up and says there's nothing wrong, i'm not worried in the slightest, this is a republican distraction tactic, is she trying to tell her voters that everything's going to be okay? >> yes. the thing is if something happens between now and april, it's going to be significant in this race. whether it's an indictment or an fbi recommendation to go forward with -- >> will we know about the recommendation through a leak? >> i think we will. we're already getting stuff from the fbi and sources inside saying they're worried about it. >> bret, thanks so much for coming over. i appreciate it. now you're going to have to take the shuttle bus over to the other side of the auditorium. >> i'll wave to you. >> take a bite at the breakfast bar. >> bret baier, watch him tonight

>> you introduced governor christie and he said he's my really good friend and i watched the way you interacted with each other. why not go out and just endorse governor christie? >> because i'm the governor of iowa and i want to be a good host for all the candidates. and there's a lot of good candidates running this time. we have more than ever before. and consequently that's the reason why i haven't endorsed. although i'm very appreciative, governor christie was chair of the republican governors. he campaigned for me. and he helped us win illinois and massachusetts and a maryland state that we didn't think we could pick up. plus defend all those other states we gain in 2010. so he did a great job, i'm very appreciative of what he did for me. and the other republican governors candidates. but there's a lot of other good candidates here, you know, former governor huckabee, former governor bush -- >> but they're all in single digits and kasich left. >> he's focusing on new hampshire. i guess my feeling is, governors have many tough decisions. balance their budgets.

they have to make the difficult decisions, and focus on the future and creating jobs and also dealing with disasters. >> you haven't endorsed anybody. but you came out against ted cruz over ethanol, over renewable fuels. >> i just gave an honest answer to a point-blank question. did i want him to win the caucuses? no. >> duly noted. >> because -- >> what i want to do is educate the voters. we have 43 ethanol plants, 12 biodiesel plants, tens of thousands of jobs. also, wind energy is big in our state, and we have companies that are making component parts for that. he voted against the wind energy tax credit. he wants to repeal the renewable fuel standard, which would cost farm income and tens of thousands of jobs in our state. and i think iowans need to know that because that's critically important. >> i want to take a look at the complexion of iowa voters.

2010 and 2014, let's take a look. 18% of the voters on the exit poll were liberal voters. and now in 2014, man, 23%, to the tune of 586,000. what does that mean? >> well, these are democrats you're looking at here. and i think 43% of iowa democrats identified as socialists. so that means bernie sanders got a real chance here. >> you know the interesting thing, it's not a coronation for clinton. she's got a tough race in iowa because a lot of the democrats are not satisfied. she's the epitome of the establishment, and they don't like washington, d.c. or wall street. so, even -- on both sides you've got a lot of dissatisfaction. among democrats, you've got some very liberal people that don't like hillary, and don't trust her. >> let's say hillary loses tonight. that will be the second time she's lost iowa.

let's say she loses and then becomes president. are you concerned? >> oh, she's vindictive -- >> you think she's vindictive? >> oh, she is vindictive. you know what she said after she lost her eight years ago, my concern is, if she gets beat here and then becomes president, i think we got real big problem. >> what do you think she'd do to you? >> well, i think she'd see to it that iowa was not first, because you at this stage stung her twice, you know, she's pretty vindictive and i don't think she would forget what happened. >> i just wonder about trends because i watched some of that emotion in a bar last night with governor christie and i believe we had some of that and i saw you introduce him. and the respect he had for you. one of the best things that happened to him was nine months in he gets a call from governor branstad, how does he even know me? and you guys struck up a relationship. >> well, i really appreciate

what he did as chair of the republican governors. we got a lot of states to defend. and we not only successfully defended all of them against pennsylvania, but we went on to win illinois, massachusetts and maryland. not easy states for republicans. and he really orchestrated that effort. i told him help me early you won't have to worry about me late. >> that's a really big christie head behind you. >> you're probably not going to answer this question but have to ask you, your predictions for tonight? >> well, the iowa poll is usually pretty accurate. i have a lot of respect -- >> des moines? >> for ann setter's poll. >> that's got trump up? >> yeah. >> governor branstad for you to come here and put us on your agenda. >> you're welcome. >> the endorsement everyone wanted. thanks so much. ten minutes before the bottom of the hour, hillary clinton has said her e-mail scandal is just like benghazi, a republican hit job. is that right? greta van susteren has some legal insight and she will join us live. how do i know? because she's walking this way. how will it affect voters there? host of on the record greta van susteren joins brian and i to chat about this from des moines. okay, so greta, you know, politically hillary clinton is trying to glom benghazi on with this. because she feels her political consultants have poll tested this and said, okay, link it with benghazi because people don't care about benghazi, they say, and then they'll just dismiss this as well. but legally, and that's your department, there's a lot of peril here, isn't there? >> look, i'm a former criminal defense attorney and i always worry, i always think the worst case scenario. but i will say this, if these 22 e-mails that are now called top secret, if, in fact, they were classified afterwards, later, because the intelligence agency asked for it, i think she probably has a strong legal argument. but it certainly is a messy political situation. but we still don't have have all the facts. because we don't have all the e-mails. and the state department hasn't been wholly cooperative.

and we still don't have the answer, why in the world did she have an e-mail server in her house, that may not be a legal problem, but it sure is a political issue. >> what about the way she answers the question? could she get herself in additional jeopardy by the way she answers questions by greta van susteren or coming on "fox & friends"? >> no, not unless she gets on the witness stand and says something inconsistent and she's shown to have said something inconsistent. you only get in trouble if you make a false statement to the fbi. and then you get what martha stewart got. martha stewart never got indicted for insider trading. she got indicted for false statements to the fbi. >> sure. and they're going to look to escape that. >> and greta, given the fact that it sounds like she was hacked, not only by russia and china, and north korea, and other bad actors, as well, but how would this change in a legal way for her if it is proven that perhaps some american operators, cia agents, or people like that,

actually died because of secrets other governments got from her e-mail device that was wide open. >> all right, well you say proven. i mean, i don't know whether any of that can be proven. but even if it's proven i don't see this having legal liability. obviously there are all sorts of other implications. she was never supposed to have that server in her house. that violates the rules. so, look, you know, at this point one of the biggest problems we have is that we're all sort of flying blind. we don't have all the facts. that's a big problem. this is without a doubt a horrible scandal. a horrible scandal i'm not so sure how it's going to unravel in terms of a legal -- >> will we ever find out what the fbi recommends or are we just going to find out indictment or not indictment? >> i think what the fbi is probably going to do, my guess is because they don't want to be called political, they're going to send it over to the justice department. i suspect the justice department will convene a grand jury, and then it's going to be 16 to 23 citizens in a room who will hear evidence, and they'll make a decision but we'll never hear what happened in the grand jury.

i never wanted my clients ever to testify before a grand jury. because i tell you that the one -- if i represented hillary clinton and this is really going out on a limb, i might want her if it goes to a grand jury to testify so she could answer questions to a grand jury. i'm going way down the road. >> while she's running for president, unbelievable. tonight we're going to watch you at 7:00 eastern time. correct? >> absolutely. everybody's going to be watching, right? i mean that's why i got up so early. you promised me that. >> the caucus starts and so do you, you can have one of your guests carly fiorina. >> we're going on the bus. i haven't been on a lot of bus rides recently. >> all right. greta, thanks so much. always great to see you. >> nice to see you. >> well, before she -- and carly fiorina's going to be with us very shortly. also coming up sarah palin just gave her first interview since her big endorsement supporting donald trump, and what she said is already making headlines. we've got it on the other side of a brief time-out. and we are going behind the scenes once again in iowa, this time brian is going to wake up one of our big stars.

reagan, who, too, had at one point, he was a registered democrat even. and then he saw the light. and i say, wonderful. i am so glad that donald trump is on our side when it comes to the political spectrum understanding that free markets capitalism, and restoration of our freedoms is the way for america to be restored. good. we should celebrate that he has come over on the right side. >> any time you mention ronald reagan's name, buzz word, kmpzs love ronald reagan. was this a fair comparison, tucker? >> it's really kind of hard to know. i mean -- >> she feels a little bit differently. i see every republican candidate in my lifetime really since the 1984 campaign has invoked reagan. i see trump taking the party in a very different direction. a more nationalist direction. i'm not saying that that's good or bad but it's very different from every other republican campaign i have covered in 25 years. so i'm not saying trump isn't

reagan but he's running a very, very different campaign with very, very different ideas from anything we've seen. >> the first time she endorses donald trump, the next day she's out on the stump, i think in oklahoma, and she brought up that her son's had problems and she seems to have blamed it on ptsd and then tangentially on barack obama. >> i never blamed president obama. what i have blamed president obama in doing, though, is this level of disrespect for the united states military that has made manifest in getting -- >> do you regret the comment, governor pail, on that day of the endorsement? >> what did i say that is offensive? >> that you -- at the feet of the president of? >> i don't regret any comments that i made because i didn't lay ptsd at the foot of the president. i did say, though, that there is, and suggested very adamantly, that there is much more that our commander in chief

can do to prove that he respects our troops, and will let them do their jobs. >> that's kind of the way i remembered it, as well, where she said the president should do more for the guys who came back, and she had talked earlier about how her son had come back from his duty changed. >> whenever you politicize your own family it's tough for sure. it's hard to know what goes on in anyone else's family. but whenever you use that as a campaign talking point i think you open yourself up to criticism. >> yeah. it did sound like she blamed ptsd on president obama, whether she meant to or not. that's the way it seemed to have come off. meanwhile yesterday, after i landed. my one goal was to do what tucker has experienced since the '80s and find out what it is like in iowa trying to go inside these campaigns. so from the minute we stopped off on the plane, to the second we got to editing at about 10:00 at night, here's a look at four campaigns that we went to, and here's what you missed.

whoo. on the ground in iowa. finally. candidates everywhere. my goal is to see as many as i can on stage, in action, and see what their supporters are like. first stop, rick santorum. he's having i think a house party. a private party. i have no idea what to expect, after all, last time around, four years ago, he won this thing. des moines, this is the home of rich santorum. what do you get out of this situation? what do you get out of a major event or a big arena? >> the one-on-one questions, the personality, really seeing what they're like. you see them up close and personal. >> i'm trying to take a look around and see which candidates i like the most. >> the idea of the big rallies and the big events, and the celebrity status that donald trump brings has really altered the landscape here and the question is, how will that be reflected at the caucus. >> so that was my first caucus house party.

country. and you said to everyone, for everyone to know, no one knew who you were back then. >> that's right. >> in what way did you accomplish your goal in getting your name out? >> first of all this is not the end of the process, this is the beginning of the process. despite all the discussion for the last ten months, people only start voting now. we're leaving here and heading to new hampshire. but, you're right, i started out 17 out of 16 candidates. less than 4% of the people here had ever heard of me. >> right. >> and we're going to surprise here in iowa tonight. >> so, in what way do you feel as though -- you did not have an opportunity maybe to capitalize the momentum that you got for a period there. do you have anything you can learn from iowa to take to new hampshire? >> well, i disagree with the premise of your question. i don't judge how this campaign is going by the polls. and the reason i don't is because the polls are so quickly wrong. they've been wrong over and over and over again. and they're particularly wrong in iowa. they have historically been so wrong in iowa. so i know what i see on the ground. i know we're packing people in. i know who says they were

undecided until they came to see me. so we're going to exceed expectations in iowa, just as we have all along the way. and despite the fact that the game is rigged in a lot of ways we're going to keep going. >> in what respect is it rigged? >> let's see, the political establishment didn't like the fact that there were so many candidates. the establishment decided we had to have really few debates. the media decided they were going to pick who was on what stage because of the polls. all that has nothing to do with the voters. voters show up. and the voters actually aren't paying attention to the polls. and they're not paying attention to the pundits. they're showing up and making their minds. i've had i would say 20 events in the last 48 hours. and you'd be amazed how many people walked in, undecided, and how many people walked out caucusing for me. so we're going to surprise. >> that sounds a lot like the santorum story from four years ago. in retrospect, what number would you be happy with? and what would exceed your expectations? and what would go below your expectations? >> i'm not going to give you a number, i'm just going to say
