tv   Sunday Housecall  FOX News  February 7, 2016 9:30am-10:01am PST

9:30 am
hello. i'm eric shawn. time now for "sunday housecall." >> i'm arthel neville. joining us is dr. david samadi.
9:31 am
>> and dr. marc siegel. zploos good to see you. >> good to see you. >> okay. we're going to start today with growing concern about the vaek virus after thousands of pregnant women have become infected with the mosquito-borne virus. >> there are so many uncertainties, and i just want to have it checked out and see. because i'm so early in my pregnancy. >> we are seeing a lot of concerned patients who are returning from what they thought were going to be pleasant vacations. it is marred to -- it is hard to relieve their anxiety. what we are trying to do is arm ourselves with the most information we can and pass the information on to our patients. what we're also doing is for patients who do come to see us and are part of our program we are tracking them and keeping their names on our lists so if there are any changes in
9:32 am
guidelines week reach out to them. >> this situation is sparking a lot of concern, including this question from one of our viewers, here it is. my 37-year-old daughter was bitten several times while on ovation to the dominican republic in october. two months later, she became pregnant. do we have cause to be concerned? dr. samadi? >> the short answer is absolutely not. because the incubation period for zika virus is two to three weeks, not two months. and you can get tested to see if she is positive for any issues before she became pregnant why are we talking about vaek virus. >> i want to talk specifically about this lady because you toldty me the incue position period is two to three weeks so this woman who became pregnant two months later doesn't need to be considered. can she get treatment for the virus considering she is pregnant. >> we don't know if she is positive. if she wants to get pregnant,
9:33 am
she tas to get tests and see if she is positive for zika virus. obviously if it's negative she can get pregnant. that's really not the case f. it was two weeks, three weeks, then i think it would be a concern and i would absolutely be seeing the gynecologist and the doctors. vaek viruses started in 1987 in uganda. nobody cared for it because it wasn't spreading out of africa. in 2007, it became a problem in brazil but they eradicated the virus and the mosquitos. may of 2015 it became clear, at that time they didn't take it seriously because the symptoms as marc will explain, mild fever, rash, body aches, but it's not a big deal. but once it has become big numbers, over a million people, and we are seeing microcephaly -- pregnant women,
9:34 am
who have zika virus, still we tonight know the cause, but there can be association between the small heads that can lead to retardation, language problems, et cetera. that is that's why the world health organization is warning pregnant women planning to travel to these 26 countries listed on line, please don't travel. >> do they have enough research to no how it can affect us whether you are pregnant or not? >> eric, great point. it is an emerging infectious disease. even though it has been around since 1947 it's burgeoning in brazil. and the mosquitos were wiped out because they were trying to get rid of dengue fever. also on that mosquito. the mosquito carries dengue
9:35 am
fever, yellow fever, and now zika. it's to the really found in the united states except in southern states. dengue has never taken hold here n. brazil it's burgeoning. >> two states now with states of emergency, right. >> i want to talk about that. first of all, 80% of the time you have no symptom. so there is a lot of people out there that have it that don't know. rapid testing for zika virus is just coming into play -- >> americans right now may have and it not know it. >> no, because all the cases you mentioned, they are all travelers. the 50 or so are all travelers. it hasn't happened here because it is a mosquito borne illness. we've had about sexual transmission and urine and saliva. there has only been one case about sexual transmission. we pretend we don't know anything about this virus. in french poll indonesia there was an outbreak, well studied
9:36 am
and it's usually not spread bisexual transmission. mostly mosquitos. >> is it mosquitos to humans. is it also humans to mosquitos? answer when we come back. >> that's a great point. >> it came up at the republican debate last night. did you see this. >> fear of spread of the zika virus, and with the rio olympics just months away, is there a skain scenario where you would quarantine people travel, back from brazil into the united states? >> you bet i would. and the fact of the was i took strong symptoms -- remember what happened with that nurse, she was showing symptoms and coming back from a place where the ebola virus was active. >> you heard chris christie saying he would quarantine those traveling back from countries with zika virus.
9:37 am

9:41 am
we're back now with "sunday housecall" with the doctors. more on the zika virus and questions about whether quarantining zika patients is a good idea. with spring coming a lot more mosquitos are going to start buzzing around the backyards. we were just alarmed over west nile virus over the past years. now zika. what do we do. >> it is a mild virus, 80% of the time, no symptoms. 20% of the time, mild flu like symptoms. absolutely no reason to quarantine people with this. 808% you don't know whether they have. it's spread by mosquitos most of the time. quarantining would be a huge waste of resources. a vaccine is years away.
9:42 am
we have got to get the nih working on that. if we use insecticide and larvaside and we get rid of still water, we have got to get rid of the mosquitos, and rid them from brazil as well. that will get rid of the disease, if we get rid of the carrier. >> public authorities do deal with mosquitos in the public standing waters, and swamps. >> this will not be a huge problem in the u.s. because we are air-conditioning. we are going to be indoor. and this is mostly in very poor neighborhoods in south america where there is no air-conditioning, people are out there. there is rivers, stagnant water, and there are mosquitos all the time. if you usury pell ants, long sleeves, if you are going to be outdoor, cover yourself and use bed nets, et cetera, if you use what we have to protect ourselves from mosquitos, this will not be a problem.
9:43 am
we have about four months to prepare ourselves to make sure this isn't going to be an issue in the u.s. the big problem is we have olympics coming up. olympics in 2016 is going to be global travels. everyone is going to brazil. they may get infected and bring it back. and there are case reports of sexual stds as a result of this. nobody should worry about this, but if you have been in those areas, if you are a male, you have been bitten in those airs and you come back, you need to use condom. the incubation period is about two to three weeks. if you are a woman and you want to be pregnant or you are pregnant, you should avoid going to those areas because you are putting yourself and your child at risk. how do we find out if there is a problem? you can get a blood test. you can go to your gynecology. they use ultrasounds to look at the size of the head, which is going to be tall smaller in this case. and something called amniocentesis, they can get the fluid and find out if there is a problem. i think that symptoms are very
9:44 am
mild. i don't think this is going to be -- now for ebola we overre t overreacted and it was absolutely the right thing to do. you could get it from sweat, urine, saliva and other things. this is only transmitted from mosquitos. we are going to be okay. >> if you take the fluid from a woman's amniotic sack, if she has it, then what happens. >> then you have a family discussion whether you are going to continue with the bigt or no. that's a family discussion they need to decide. 2 out of 10,000 kids may have microcephaly as a result of alcohol use, drug use or genetics. if you happen to have this as a result of this virus and you are going to have a child with microcephaly with where they are going to have members of the jury retardation, hearing loss, cognitive issues, it's a lifetime disaster for this kid, and you have to decide whether you want to continue with birth or not. >> quarantining, answer that for
9:45 am
us dr. siegel if it's necessary. >> i said it's not necessary to quarantine. back to the microcephaly issue, it's not prove this connection. it is an associated finding. when which means they are finding the zika virus in some babies with microcephaly. they have to find out whether it is a cause and affect, whether it is the virus causing i. inn the meantime we have to protect pregnant woman. >> do you agree that it is not a major threat here in our country. >> except for travelers, pregnant women traveling. i will he a make a point to underline. that there is 50 to 100 million cases of dengue fever riding on that same mosquito. we have been worried about dengue taking root here. it hasn't. zika also won't take root here in the united states because we don't have the same breeding grounds. we should get rid of the mosquitos at the source because people want to travel to south america and want to travel to
9:46 am
the caribbean. pregnant women want to travel. i agree with the travel advisory this time around. i don't think it's wise for the pregnant women to be traveling to these areas. >> the numbers are relatively small. it's better not to panic. this woman who visited the air area. protect yourself. but if you are pregnant don't go. if your business man and you go there, protect yourself and you can always be tested if you think you have been bitten. >> if a mosquito has it, and it bites me, can it give it to me. >> if the mosquito bites you, yes, you can get it. but if the man has it and he has sexual activity, whether that virus is going to be in urine or see men or blood. they are testing. >> there is rapid testing. we can actually tell, if you don't get it within a week of being bitten by that skoitd you
9:47 am
are like low not going to get it. pregnant women who get tested for this, if they are negative, they don't have to worry. >> when we come back, we'll talk about something called insulin manipulation. stick around. constipated? trust number one doctor recommended dulcolax use dulcolax tablets for gentle overnight relief suppositories for relief in minutes and stool softeners for comfortable relief of hard stools. dulcolax, designed for dependable relief

it is a little known condition affecting some diabetes patients, so-called insulin manipulation. it's where the patient artificially controls the intake of their insulin, a temporary solution that can lead to some serious long term health consequences. dr. samadi, tell us more. >> a lot of people may not know something called dia bulimia. it is a type one debettic or juvenile diabetes. the pancreas is not making more insulin because of autoimmune. this is different than type 2, which is a result of diet and i don't have weight. in this case you need insulin and need to inject yourself because the sugar you get from your food is used as energy. in this case case, young ladies between the age of 19 to 40 diagnosed with type one diabetes they don't take and manipulate their insulin. why do they do that?
9:52 am
if you don't take your insulin now the body cannot use sugar as energy and start using fat. these are kids that have eating disorders, that have problem with their own images and they don't take insulin so they can lose weight, which is dangerous. when you don't take your insulin, you make key tones and keto as dosis, which is dangerous because you can go into kidney failure. your poe at the yum can go up, heart failure, and can lead to death. parents who have children with type one diabetes you need to monitor whether they are taking their insulin or not. this is a form of eating disorders and you need an endocrine doctor and a psychiatrist. because these two, diabetes, and eating disorder go against each other, they contradict each other. one is about watch what you are eating, watch your salt, watch your sugar. and the other one is, we want you to take calories and gain weight. so this is a very complex and challenging problem. >> marc, have you come across
9:53 am
this in your practice? >> absolutely. i worked with many of the top die beatologistings in new york for many years. 30 million diabetics in the united states. only 1.5 million of them are type one diabetes. that's what we are talking about today. what's the difference? with type one, your antibodies are attacking your pancreas and you are not making enough insulin, period. so if we don't give you insulin and replace the insulin that you are lacking you are going to end up with what david just mentioned. you start looking for other energy sources. you use key tones. you make acid, go into a coma and end up in the hospital. type one diabetics, also known as juvenile on set. starts as a child usually. sometimes adolescents, but usually a child gets this. these children, if they have a problem where they don't want to take insulin or they start binge eating they are going to end up with a problem.
9:54 am
someone who is a type one diabet diabetic, their pancreas is not working and they need insulin around the clock. >> their breath smells like acetone, that's from keto as dosis, and it can lead to heart failure and death. et cetera a serious problem and the parents need to watch out for it carefully. >> they must take insulin, take it as prescribed and watch their diet. all die betsics much watch this diet, type one and type two. >> and don't not take your insulin to lose weight. super bowl sunday is only a few hours away. will you be cheering and yelling at your television? up next, the doctors have advice on how to protect your vocal cords when you are yelling, yes, touchdown! at ally bank, no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like social media equals anti-social. hey guys, i want you to meet my fiancée, denise. hey. good to meet you dennis.

damage your vocal cords. drink a lot of water, cut down on alcohol throughout this event. they say warm up by yelling at your kids. i'm not going to tell you to do that. warm up by using your voice. >> first of a all, nobody is cutting down on alcohol. beer is coming out. you know, touchdown. >> look, this is what is going to happen tonight. you are going to be drinking alcohol. you are going to have chocolate, fatty foods. all of that can cause reflux while you are doing this. at the same time, you are creaming loud. so that's going to cause a lot of inflammation of the vocal cords. the medical term of this is airline jits. that's what's going to happen. the best thing, if you have that, and you have some inflammation of your cord is to stay quiet of don't talk. just like the i with a you lift something heavy and your back hurts, those muscles in the cord is also inflamed. drink a lot of water and don't whisper. times you water and you do more.
