right here because we're definitely looking out for you. >> breaking tonight, the first in the nation primary offering up big time surprises. not necessary in the winner's bracket, but how candidates won, why, and where they'll place when it is over. welcome to a live midnight edition of the kelly file, everyone, i'm megyn kelly reporting from new hampshire. we have result s coming in at this hour and may have new calls before the hour is done. it was just seconds after the polls closed when fox news was able to project a victory for donald trump on the g.o.p. side. the story, what is happening in spots 2 through 5. we know john kasich finished second in new hampshire. a week after finding himself 8th

in iowa. from there, it's been a nail biter between ted cruz, jeb bush and marco rubio. at this hour, we still do not know the answer. but we're still waiting for the votes to come in. there is the bottom of the screen. you can see the numbers. 83% of the raw vote has been counted now. cruz and bush have 11%. rubio showing at 11 now. it's going to be tight. really tight. on the other side of the aisle, bernie sanders defeating hillary clinton, every demographic voted for bernie. including men, and women. here is a taste of what the candidates had to say to their supporters tonight. >> thank you. >> we have sent the message that we'll echo the wall street to washington from maine to california. >> you're the reason we're here

i love you all. thank you, new hampshire. thank you. thank you new hampshire. thank you. we areñi going now to south carolina we're going to win in south carolina. i love you all. thank you very much. thank you. >> we have got a big show for you tonight including fox coverage at the clinton headquarters, john roberts with rubio, and we begin with our chief political correspondent, carl cameron reporting from downtown manchester. voters are still partying, carl? >> hi, megyn. donald trump has rewritten the play book. didn't campaign here, often insulting the audience with vulgarity, many thought was inappropriate for crowds that had kids. but trump with a big win and his

aides and he acknowledged they couldn't have asked for a better down ballot result. they believe john kasich is the perfect play pitch to shoot out of the sky in south carolina. arguing he hasn't spent time in south carolina to be able to compete there. they see a three way tie as an opportunity for trump. they're busy battling with one another, he can continue to push his make america great again rhetoric and advance numbers, win in south carolina and head into the march 1st states in the south, he's been getting crowds in the tens of thousands. a huge night for trump and it's scaring the rest of the republican field. >> where do we snand the battle for number three? it's so tight. we're showing 11% at this hour before cruz, rubio and bush. >> ted cruz has done a lot of work in south carolina and across the south.

he was the first candidate to break out of the iowa, new hampshire campaign mode and go to alabama, tennessee, georgia. he's been preparing for these races, knowing he can do well in iowa. perhaps not top three in new hampshire, but ramping up in south carolina. he's got organization. jeb bush in south carolina has potential for muscle. south carolina they still call it bush country for the 2000 race where his brother became victorious and for george hw bush going into the 1988 race.xd those ground troops are still there and loyal to the bush name and it could make the billionaire real estap developer back on his heels. marco rubio has to figure out how to turn around what happened in this debate because he acknowledged that is probably one of the things that held him back tonight. >> carl, thank you. we're getting closer.

87% of the raw vote totals now. there wasn% shortage insignificant moments in tonight's speeches but one moment was marco rubio, using his debate performance to explain why he did not take, did not do better here tonight. >> we're still watching newspapers but i can tell you many people are disappointed, i'm disappointed tonight. i want you to understand something. i want you to understand something. our disappointment tonight is not on you. it's on me. it's on me. i did not, i did not do well on saturday night, folks. listen to this. that will never happen again. that will never happen again.

>> john roberts is live in manchester, john? >> good morning to you. it's something that a lot of people thought was probably going to happen but still stunning to hear coming out of mark yes rubio's mouth he did fall on his face saturday night, that is what hurt him in the polls. take a look at the difference between numbers in iowa. in iowa, 29% of late breaking rotors went for marco rubio. john kasich does have a chance to make it up. another debate coming up in south carolina saturday night. marco rubio has to have the performance of his life if he hopes to do well. bright spots in the voting in new hampshire, he did well among young voters and seen as the most likely to win in november. you can make the argument he is the candidate for the party to coalesce around. they're not worried about kasich. they're worried about jeb bush, looks like jeb bush may beat

him. jeb bush's super pac has gone got a ton of money that they're probably going to use to slap marco rubio silly before south carolina and if he can't beat ted cruz ear in new hampshire where can he beat cruz? >> thank you. well, new jersey governor chris christie made marco rubio a key target of attacks but as of now, it appears he may have hurt rubio but did not help himself. he spoke about what is next for him. >> mary pat and i decided we're going to go home to new jersey tomorrow and going to take a deep breath, see what the final results are tonight, by tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, we should know. we should know what the vote count is. that is going to allow us to make a decision about how we move from here in this race. >> our fox news digital politics editor, howie kurtz, host of media buzz, good to see you

both. there is disappointment tonight and victories tonight. what is your take away of the evening? >> the take away is the republicans are bad at having a party. i would say. they struggle in that area. >> that is a problem. >> it's difficult. but i would say this, overstated the most overstated so far this cycle, donald trump had a pretty good showing in iowa, he lost. and we're going to have to worry about this guy. let's get back to killing the third place guy or go here and hit each other. >> everybody was taking aim at rubio. >> just killing rubio. going after rubio. jeb bush went after donald trump one time with a bank shot. but this party does not get that it stayses a serious threat because of the populst movement said give us what we want or

we'll split this in half. >> ted cruz figured that out. he telegraphed what he's going to do in south carolina. we have the sound byte. he talks about the value issue again. here he is. >> now, we go on to south carolina. the palmetto state. and washington liberals may call south carolina less hospitable. >> so washington liberals. not exactly new york values. >> i think the republican party understands full well cruz is the only candidate to successfully taggel donald. >> i think he felt he didn't think he was going to do that

well in new hampshire. donald trump claborred the establishment here, and doing big rallies and tv interviews every hour and a half, but moved the terms of the debate, many said were outrageous, andkeepino the states. >> they love that here. >> he has other candidates debating on his turf. >> we heard the opposite nal sis after iowa. they were like, he didn't campaign, he just flew in on big plane, and polls were overstated. all of a sudden, the media is like everything is wrong. it's all wrong. it's new. >> forget about everything, and the delegate count currently is you need 1237 delegates to win the republican nomination. donald trump has 17. ted cruz, ten. marco rubio, seven.

john kasich, four. people ought to, as president obama would say don't get to we, we'd up. but i would say there is a lot of football left to be played. >> stand by. exit polls suggest donald trump and john kasich split 60% of the moderate republican vote between them. when bush took to the microphones he suggested granite state voters may have just reset the rates. >> pundits had it figured out monday night. the iowa caucuses were complete they said that the race was now a three-person race between two freshman senators and a reality tv star. and the reality tv star, still doing well, it looks like you have reset the races.

for that, i am grateful. >> reporter peter doocy is live at jeb bush's headquarters in manchester, peter? >> jeb bush declared his campaign is not dead and supporters say they were hap with the way things ended here in new hampshire for governor bush because they say they didn't think it was going to be possible to finish close to the top three. i asked governor bush if now, he needs to finish first in south carolina. he does not think a win there is a requirement to keep going but south carolina is all anyone here is talking about since 8:00 when it came clear tonight is not going to be his night because not only is he in a good position but they've got a lot of money to keep going. woody johnson told me he thinks donors are going to be excited about the way things went. something else people were excited about, jeb bush finished ahead of his protegee turned

rival marco rubio. tonight here at the bush rally it was a subdued team. the only time the crowd got riled up is the couple times bush was speaking. >> peter, thank you, joining me now, mark theissan and rich laurie. mark, your take on the night? >> thank you for clarifying the race, new hampshire. i mean this is the place, okay. ? they were going to be the place they're going to clarify the race. and instead, it's a mess. you've got three candidates tied for third place. and even so, let's say jeb bush pulls out polls and comes in third, separate big half a point. first and third in new hampshire aren't the same thing as first and third in iowa. in iowa, the separation was 4.5 points. here, it's 23 points. so there is a massive gap

between what third place means in that iowa race, which was so close and tight and here, there is a massive gap between donald trump and everybody else. >> let's give the devil his due. this is a crushing victory by donald trump. he overperformed his polls and margin was huge. look at the exit polls. he broke it any which way. he won by almost every group, no matter how you slice it. the battle for third is interesting. but there are only two guys with one state so far. ted cruz and donald trump. everybody else has been engaged in efforts to spinñr second, third, fourth or fifth place finishes. >> you have to sometimes win when you need a number. now, what we're hearing is that south carolina is going to get ugly, and fast. that governor bush planned a

quote, attack on rubio. >> yes. donald trump is the guy they've got to take down if any of them want to win. >> why is that? >> because they're fighting to be the contender. you have donald trump out there as the outsider. who is leading the pack. you have ted cruz behind him a little bit. then, you've got everybody else fighting to be the alternative to cruz and trump. this will you get clarity, if they don't, we're going to have -- donald trump is going to runway with this thing. >> they say by march 1, cruz can potentially gain the upper hand because 12 states will vote, including six across the south where cruz has been invested heavily and then, winner take all states, where cruz's superr pac megadonor has been spending.

and is it advantage cruz? >> we don't know. south carolina will have a big role in deciding who has the advantage going into the rest of the south. now, what is friendly to cruz is that south carolina is a more evangelical state than new hampshire. >> but he's not leading there. trump is leading by a lot. >> yes. and donald trump is going to have a lot of appeal in the south, sort of the jacksonin populst. we have never had a situation where a front runner has been skating through, unscatheed except for a three-week period when cruz went after him and ended up vesting him in iowa. then, he backed off and knew he couldn't beat him in new hampshire. marco rubio and the rest of the guys were engaged in this fight over second, third, fourth and fifth place. it's been bizarre. now we're going to see that

fight again in south carolina. i believe it will be like iowa. those guys fighting for the top spot and someone else trying to come up the middle with it. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> again, we do have new results any moment now on the dead heat for third place and we have details on what is next for the clinton campaign after bernie sanders took new hampshire by a huge margin. and look at the bottom of the screen now. it's 86% of the democratic vote, in. 60% sanders, 39, clinton. kirsten powers and robert zimmerman when we come back. >> tonight with what appears to be a record breaking voter turn out, because of a huge voter turn out, and i say huge.

we won.

together, we have sent a message that will echo from wall stroet to washington from maine

to california. and that is that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people, not yuft a handful of wealthy campaign contributors and their super pac. >> that was the democratic primary winner, bernie sanders, revelling in his defeat of hillary clinton. this week, hillary clinton was ahead by 56 points. and clinton setting their sites on the next big contest. >> we're going to fight for

every vote and every state. people have every right to be angry. they're hungry for solutions. what are we going to do? wall street can never again be allowed to fate main street. i can ne how to do it. >> live at clinton headquarters in new hampshire, mike? >> hi, megyn. hillary clinton said something that has become painfully obvious to her, that she has a lot of work to do when it comes to young people. the data shows hillary clinton does well with older voters in places like iowa and new hampshire. people remember her from her days as first lady but the data shows that hillary clinton is getting walloped when it comes to voters under 30 years of age.

that is what she's talking about working on. the clipt ones are going home and there will be a debate thursday night in milwaukee, wisconsin. and they say the calendar reflects a lot of states, they think they're better positioned with more diversity to win. >> mike, thank you. team hillary released a long memo explaining the loss. joining us is kirsten powers and robert zimmerman from new york, a clinton supporter. and let me start with you. >> good evening, megyn. >> she's losing to him by 21 points. where does it say she fell short of the goal? >> there is no question, had was a disappointing evening for the clinton campaign.

and hillary clinton proud supporter, i'm disappointed but you can't let this contest define the campaign anymore than george w. bush or barack obama for bill clinton stopped them from winning the nomination and presidency. when you move on to diverse states like south carolina that reflect the democratic party, the face of our nation, she's winning there 68% to 30%. and she has a message that resonates, way beyond just a environment of new hampshire. >> it didn't resonate in new hampshire with anyone. >> right. >> she lost every demographic group except for people who made more than $200,000 and people 65 and older. so he was winning in every demographic group. and look. she may be winning women now in south carolina but because we're

not there yet but this -- these should be the people that were behind her. and she was winning them and they're not behind her. i think that bernie sanders has a message that resonates. they're looking for someone who is going to shake up the system. if you look at both people tonight, they have a lot in monday. they talk about we're not going to be the policeman of the world. we have bad trade deals. you're getting a raw deal. the political class is screwing you over. they're giving similar messages and these are messages that both parties are resonating with. >> go ahead. >> i think it's important to try to put this into perspective. new hampshire has it's own libertarian economic view of the world. but live free and die state. hillary clinton is winning nation ylly amongst women as well, so i would be careful not to let this define the election.

it's a tough night. >> that is the thing, kirsten. if you had to choose being bernie sanders or hillary clinton, would you rather be hillary clinton right now? a ant -- at this point in the race? >> if determined in new hampshire, you'd be right. >> that is for kirsten. >> i don't know, i think she should have, it's true this is sort of his home turf with this neighboring state she got beat handling in a state she won before. and i would be concerned if i was her, frankly. it doesn't mean. >> is she going to make changes? >> i won't be surprised if she made changes to the campaign. based on talking to people who are close to her campaign, they say they feel should the should been more aggressive with bernie sanders and tried to take him out earlier. >> let's be realistic. hillary clinton has to work harder and she will work harder reaching out to younger people

and introducing herself to a younger group. >> she said that tonight. she's acknowledging she has work to do. how can she not? look at the numbers. i got to go. goodbye. >> okay. kirsten, good to see you. >> we're continuing to poll new vote totals. keep an eye on the bottom of the screen. and cruz appears to be gaining a little ground as he moves up to third place in new hampshire. he'll be celebrating that. and guy benson next. don't go away. >> so, new hampshire, i want to thank you. we love you. we're going to be back a lot. we're not going to forget you. you started it, remember, you started it.

we're going to have strong, incredible voters and them are going to come into our country but they're going to come into our country legally, they're going to come in legally. we're going to build a wall. it's going to be built. it's not even, believe it or

not, it's not even a difficult thing to do. >> that was donald trump tonight rallying over an issue they care about, immigration. and it's not just the trump voters. the exit polls showing 64% of all new hampshire primary voters support trump's proposal to temporarily ban muslims who are not citizens from entering the u.s. great to see you both. guys support him on immigration and ban of muslims and across the board. he won them on every issue. and the question is, whether that enthusiasm, do you think, translates out of new hampshire? >> it does. if you look at numbers in south carolina he's in a stronger position going down there. when the first round came out tonight, we saw nearly two thirds of republicans agreeing

with the muslim ban, it became clear this was going to be a big trump night. when the final round of polls were finally put to bed, we went through all of them, trump won virtually every single demographic across every category. most by double digits. this is a jaw dropping performance by trump and it was by the splintered field and the rest of the party but he has a full head of steam heading south to the palmetto state. >> new, trump is very well positioned. it may be 70% of the voters didn't want trump. but there is like 40 candidates within that 70%. so as long as trump can keep them fractured he's well positioned. >> 34% in an eight-person field is a performance that can only be called huge. and among the very conservative voters, who he lost among in

iowa, he thumped ted cruz among moderates, a slight edge over john kasich. among high school graduates and less, overwhelming support. among post graduates, and college graduates, trump triumphs. he goes into south carolina with a great military tradition with a populist message he is unbee holden to any special interest. you can't buy trump. you can't bully trump. you can't influence trump. this is his trump card, as it were. and i think it will work in south carolina as in new hampshire, tonight. >> megyn, last week the three of us were together on the show talking about iowa. i made two points. i said trump under performed in iowa, a red flag for him and i said political laws of physic do apply to donald trump because of ground game. tonight i'm going to tell you he

overperformed in new hampshire. and new hampshire proved that there are waiver clauses for him. he did far fewer events in this state than any of his rivals and still had a victory. those facts should scare any candidate who is not named donald trump in this game. >> what does that say for ted cruz who is set up in the next wave of states we're going to go to? >> south carolina was set ahead of the other seven primaries in 1980 by by friend, lee atwater, it was meant to be the gateway to the south. so ted cruz has to score in south carolina. and i think he's going to come up against donald trump there. i think donald trump will defeat cruz. if you look at southern

primaries today, those are the states in which trump has the largest polling margin. i feel good. i probably don't think ted cruz is donald trump's problem. i think it put trump in a strong position to go to polls. >> the person that didn't come in here wasn't an establishment guy. guy, good to see you and roger, you too. now, going to john kasich's headquarters. >> the people of new hampshire taught me a lesson. from this day forward i'm going to go forward and spend time listening and healing and helping and bringing people together.

>> doug mcelway is live in concord. doug? >> you know if you hadn't seen the final tally on the tv tonight, you would have thought for the world that john kasich had won this thing. it turned out this second place finish garnered hes than half of what trump compiled but he did the minimum of what he needed to do. he lived to fight another day that has begun. he boarded a charter plane for south carolina. his first speaking engagement set for noon tomorrow, outside of charleston. he spoke tonight like a winner. and bypassing any criticism of donald trump. filed this zinger at bernie sanders. >> bernie talked so long i thought he was going to hit his 77th birthday before he got off the stage. >> the reality for kasich is that he has a monumental hurdle to overcome. he's been focused on new

hampshire, trump has been making trips to south carolina, he's got gobs of money should he need to tap into that, which he hasn't. then, rubio, cruz, and bush are better funded and better organized in that part of the country. megyn? >> thank you. why trump and sanders won tonight when

>> voters will have a choice, do we want a campaign conservative? or do we want a consistent conservative with a proven record? >> well, senator ted cruz and his new hampshire headquarters performed above the polls and could come in third in this

state. we're going to take a look at the exit polls for answers on why. frank luntz, the ceo of luntz global and author of what americans really want, really, look at this, frankie. we'll have the first place and a third place, if these numbers polls, marco rubio can come in fifth. >> this is horrible for rubio and goes back to the debate saturday night. first, republicans are watching everyone of these debates, second, they come to polling places not sure they're making the right decision and half of the g.o.p. field betrayed by republicans in washington and that is why trump did so well and cruz did so well in a state he wasn't supposed to. this wasn't an evangelical state. that is south carolina. this is a state that believes in conservative economics. it should have been good for

rubio and the governors. but rubio's performance saturday, if he doesn't fix that, he will not make it past super tuesday. >> two things tonight surprised me. one is rubio's candor and humility. you don't often see in a campaign. >> took him a while. >> second is john kasich, who showed his heart as he did in his first debate. we had a couple examples where kasich just made voters angry. he interrupted and has been rude. over the last two debates, he shows heart. >> what do you think is going to happen now? south carolina has a big evangelical core, but notwithstanding that. conventional wisdom would be cruz would win that but trump is leading in south carolina now. >> and i'm watching trump to see how it parallels the polling. and he actually outperformed his

polling numbers. not that he has an organization, he has people so passionate, so devoted to voting, and voting against the establishment. and trump in south carolina in the lead, and cruz has got every opportunity because the makeup of the electorate is perfect for a ted cruz candidacy. >> how does the language from trump play in south carolina? here is the latest clip among the pundits. watch. >> said well, some people, she just said it a terrible thing. you know what she said? shout it out. i don't want to. okay. you're not allowed to say, and i never expect to hear that from you again. she said i never expected to hear that from you again.

she said he's a -- >> it's insane that he said it. it's okay in new hampshire. because this is not a socially conservative state but that would play terribly in south carolina. >> he said a word that begin was p which is another word for cat. >> why leave out -- >> some of us are not comfortable saying that kind of thing. >> bleep it out. some of us may feel uncomfortable hearing it. it's what a presidential candidate said. never underestimate him. if i think he's gone too far, for some americans he hasn't gone far enough. >> we'll be right back with more from mark theissan, chris

>> the headline is the antistrategy snou. and this is in relation. it's freaked out. as we talked earlier they have been all attacking marco rubio. there is a big fight among the people in the middle of the pack and nobody has been going after him. and now you have an interesting dynamic. for the first time in eight years there is the return of george w. bush on the campaign trail who is going out to campaign for his brother. what does that do? that is a fascinating dynamic. george w. bush is incredibly pop pop -- popular. 77% approval. does trump attack him? does he engage him? if he does it can backfire. >> the trump haters like ariana huffing ton who

attacked the voters as racist and sexist talking about why trump won. i don't want to write off marco robe yow. heading to south carolina, ted cruz and donald trump are heading for a head to head confrontation and it will be ugly and they are seeing signals of that and that will be the ballgame. nobody in the gop establishment wants either of these guys. >> go ahead, chris. >> it is impossibly early in this process. we are just now starting to see the shape of things to come. the shape of things to come, and if there is one most important thing is that donald trump did what he said he would do. he got the share of votes and more into s that polls said he would deliver. this is the new normal. this is the world they live in. south carolina will be harder. this is an election that took place in new hampshire among republicans and independents.

so things will be a little tougher for trump there, but the republicans have to face facts that they have a real insurgency that is going on here. it is not going away on its own. >> ted cruz is another man hated by the establishment. and he is doing well too. to finish first and potentially third in new hampshire, you can't count cruz out no matter what we have seen with trump. >> he is serious. he is a contender for the nomination and trump is the front runner. >> this is as good as a reality tv show. >> thank you very much. great job tonight and always. we appreciate it. we will be right back.
