moments ago the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell joined the mix referring to, quote, one of our presidential candidates and his seeming ambivalence to the ku klux klan. donald trump did denounce david duke's support last week just before claiming he didn't know who he was. trump said he couldn't hear because of a, quote, lousy, unquote, earpiece even though he clearly repeated duke's name more than once. last night trump's wife melania said her husband disavows any support from david duke. >> he's not racist. he's not anti-immigrant. he wants to keep america safe. he wants to have illegal immigrants taken care of that they will not be in the country, that they don't pay taxes, that they are criminals and so that they're not good for america. >> from cnn last night, trump's rifles keep piling on. marco rubio says the clan

get him. the republican race on super tuesday is fox top story. carl is our main man on politics live at dell ray beach. carl, after all of this discussion about race it looks like trump will win and win big tonight, right? >> reporter: that's what the republican party is prepared for, and in part the actions of paul ryan and mitch mcconnell today illustrate their concern that the trump brand, well it could trump the republican brand and do damage to it as well. that's the fear and that's why you see them sort of distancing themselves not just from the rhetoric but indirectly from donald trump himself. trump is winning in most of the state polls. the only state that there's any likelihood that he won't win is texas because he has to win. winning one's own home state is pretty necessary in politics. losing it could be crippling. trump has survived these types of criticisms about the racial issue. let's not forget that super tuesday was also nick named the

have donald trump coming out with a big delegate lead. he is going to win eight, nine, maybe ten of the 11 states out there tonight. i think that's why you see these comments today by mcconnell, ryan trying to get out ahead of this repudiating him but not going as far to say they would never vote for him because they're sort of in a vice here. he looks like he is on a march to the nomination and he's got leadership. their hands are tied. >> is there a place for anyone else, anyone? >> that's the question, right? marco rubio really needs a win. he needs to be able to keep on making the case. >> like where? >> well, isn't that the question? i mean, he's been playing a lot in minnesota. he's in second place in georgia. if there's some kind of upset and he can beat trump in georgia, that would be huge. at some point he needs a win in order to keep up this narrative that he is the alternative and not ted cruz. ted cruz needs a big win in texas tonight. if for some reason trump is able

to consume him in his home state, it's kind of over for ted cruz because where else is he going to win. >> even if you win in the state of texas, you don't get all of the delegates out of texas. >> that's right. trump is going to come out of this with a commanding lead and the polls seem to make that pretty clear. and, you know, something else that carl was pointing out about the distancing that you're seeing from mcconnell and ryan. look, the republican party needs to bring in black voters, needs to bring in latino voters. >> he's going to win both. donald trump has made it clear he'll win both of them. >> this mumbling about david duke is going work against him in that regard, but will ryan denouncing him, mcconnell denouncing him work for or against trump? remember, this is the establishment in washington and trump has galvanized the anti--establishment vibe in the country. unclear whether it will work for or against. >> if you look closely they didn't denounce him.

"the new york times" had a great piece on this over the weekend. the fracture within the republican party now over what to do. one of the expectations that the

[ laugh ] officials in the state of virginia say they're expecting historic voter turnout today. that's what they say in what's shaping up to be a major swing state this election. some schools gave students the day off expecting large crowds

to swarm the gyms and cafeterias. virginia has some of the highest delegate counts. all of the candidates have made at least one stop there in the run up to this primary. the state has a diverse electorate and that's an understatement. analysts say a win in the state of virginia or commonwealth, if you will, could give candidates a big boost making the case that they can do well in the general election. shannon is at a polling site at an elementary school in manassas, virginia. what's the strategy for winning there, shannon? >> reporter: it's really tricky here, shep, because you have competing interests. virginia is seen as a microcosm of the entire country. along the northern part of virginia you have heavy industry. it's tied to d.c. it leans a little bit left up

there. there is a strong military presence here in virginia as well and broad sections of the area are also countryside. they're very rural. so you have to appeal to all different kinds of people. in the meantime in most recent years the minority population is growing while the white population trails off. one extra twist in virginia, it's an open primary which means if you're an eligible voter you can vote in whichever party. >> it looks competitive. >> reporter: it does. it's clear on the democratic side that hillary clinton is expected to win here. she has been hemmed by her long time ally and friend, the governor terry mcauliffe. it would be surprising and really bad news for her if she didn't have a commanding win here. donald trump it looks like continues to lead the pack on the gop said but larry sabato says there could be one challenge to that. >> the candidate who might have

a chance to at least come reasonably close is marco rubio. he has the support of many of the key republicans in virginia who were with jeb bush and who have been associated with mainstream republicanism in virginia for a long time. >> rubio and ted cruz have been battling back and forth in the number two and three spots while ben carson and john kasich are falling back. >> shannon bream as the gym lights buzz overhead. we'll have the results starting at 6:00 eastern time in brett's show. the next republican debate is thursday night. that's this thursday, 9:00 eastern. nowhere else but fox central. the biggest prize could be up for grabs. what might happen should ted cruz not be able to win his home

finish it off. for senator sanders staying close could mean staying in the race. clinton campaigned earlier. america samoa holding contest. down south it's showing clinton ahead. secretary clinton looking for a repeat of south carolina where strong support of african-american voters helped her crush senator sanders on saturday. 865 democratic delegates on the table tonight. that's 1/3 of what's needed to clinch the nomination. the states give out their delegates proportionately. that's the case with every state in the democratic side. for senator sanders the key is to grab as many votes as possible even in states he doesn't win. ed henry is at clinton's super tuesday headquarters down south in miami. how confident is their camp about tonight's results, ed? >> very, shep. some of her senior advisers told me privately they think they could run the table tonight. they're not likely to win

vermont, bernie sanders home state. everywhere else they think they're in command. they think it's close in minnesota. that's why hillary clinton made a few stops there today. they think her juicing turnout may turn minnesota very tightly in her favor and could give her a very big night. here's clinton a little earlier talking about that. >> i was very disappointed that he did not disavow that. that is the kind of statement that should be repudiated upon hearing it. >> she's already you can see there training her fire on the republican front-runner donald trump and if she's looking past bernie sanders and getting ready to for a general election. >> does senator sanders have a strategy for staying alive? >> his senior advisers say that

once super tuesday is done there are only a couple of states left. that's the clinton strong hold so they think once this moves to the midwest and the west they'll do a lot better but the problem is the map. he is falling behind big time. if she has a big night tonight he was explaining a little earlier after he voted in vermont his way forward. watch. >> our hope is that we can win a number of states and in those states that we don't do well obviously we want a larger vote. the goal of today is to end up with as many delegates as we possibly can. >> so he's referring to what you mentioned, those proportional delegates. he can come in secretary almost everywhere tonight and walk away with delegates. the point is the math is going to get difficult for him real fast. hillary clinton coming here to miami where i am tonight, she's already looking ahead. two weeks from today when floridians vote, you have 250 delegates at stake. they's trying to show this is a

national race. >> hillary clinton is looking ahead. now "the new york times" report, her campaign is already working on strategies to go after donald tru trump. sanders is attacking him. >> the panel is back. jacquie is with the daily beast. she's the associate editor. everything that is difficult for bernie sanders, it's going there. the super delegates. get it all the way. >> it's the democrats.

texas. he has to win a massachusetts, minnesota, colorado, somewhere to claim the victories to have a reason to go on. >> but does he? in the month of february he raised $43 million. more than the next two or three combined. >> right. that's why he can keep going is because he's still raking in money, but, again, if he doesn't have the delegates to go forward, what happens? yeah, he'll get to the convention. he'll get a good speaking spot at hillary clinton's convention in philadelphia. >> if you had the money, why not spend it? >> maybe, or maybe not. maybe you consolidate and you accept fate at this point. look, the machinery is beginning to click into gear here. you have a democratic machine that's been really left intact. it hasn't fractured the way the republicans have. and you've got bill clinton ready to campaign for hillary. you have the sitting president of the united states ready to campaign for her. a democratic party that is

unified. the republican party, meanwhile, that machinery is in attatters. this will be a race to watch in november. it seems to favor hillary at this point. >> i read in politico today unnamed insiders in the trump camp saying he will not self-fund in the general election, he will absolutely not and doesn't have the organization to compete. >> we're going to see because a lot of the same insiders that were cited in that publication in july said that he could never win a single vote in a primary or caucus. trump has proven a lot of us wrong, humbled a lot of us. i think tonight hillary is going to start looking forward. tonight in her speech she'll start looking towards trump. she wouldn't make a contrast with sanders. she's ready to make that contrast especially as she sees the in fighting. >> is there a big group of moderates say i don't want whoever the democrat is, let's go with trump. he seems right on point.

>> moderates in the democratic party? i'm sure it's possible when you're talking about reagan democrats who don't like hillary clinton and may be skeptical of her on a lot of different levels. it's not possible in 2016. to add to what david was saying, when you talk to bernie sanders voters what they say right now, a lot of them, it's not that i hate hillary clinton, i just really like bernie sanders. yeah, i'll probably vote for her but now i want to vote with my heart even though i'm not voting with my head. they don't add that last part. >> you have to be careful what you wish for. >> jacquie's right. you would see a unifying democratic party. the sanders voters would be disappointed but they would unify generally around hillary. david's point is very much worth taking seriously. we have underestimated trump's capability. yes, he doesn't have the field organization, he doesn't have the national organization, doesn't apparently have the republican party. >> or the data behind him. >> but look where he is in the

campaign. this is really an extraordinary event. it has a lot to do with u.s. demographics, about economics, about the last 10, 15, 20 years in the united states, of advantage and disadvantage for people, income inequality. all of those things are playing into this election. we can't under estimate this vibe, this site that is propelling him forward. in "the new york times" article i thought it was very interesting that the person sounding the alarm to take trump seriously was bill clinton. the campaign was sort of laughing at trump watching the debates. >> oh, no. >> bill chin top said, no, this guy is tapping into something. we better take him very seriously. >> the man of reason. >> it will look very different. >> she's finding herself.

snus one tier. >> even though it's not hosted in any way, i didn't see it hurting either one of them very much personally. >> let's watch some of the demographics today. let's see how women vote. let's see how african-americans vote. let's see how latinos vote. that will determine a lot of the trend going into the national election. if you see a big turnout of african-americans and latinos, that would theoretically benefit hillary in a national election. whether they're voting for, you know, the democrats en masse now will be an indication of what might be to come. >> the republicans have been talking about a silent majority. what are they, angry, young white men. so as much as we talk about

case. both apple and the fbi are making their cases before a panel in congress today over a court order that would force apple to hack into a san bernardino shooter's iphone. apple's top lawyer is expected to testify soon. he's argued that helping the fbi hack into the phone would leave hundreds of millions of apple owners of apple devices vulnerable to cyber criminals and other hackers. the director of the fbi, james comey, telling lawmakers he doesn't see it that way. >> i hear folks talk about keys and back doors. i actually don't see that this way. there are issues about back doors. this is about -- there's already a door on that iphone. essentially we're asking apple to take the vicious guard dog away, let us try to pick the lock. >> apple scored a major victory over the fbi in a separate but similar case. yesterday a federal judge in new york rejected a government's request in a drug case, one that would have forced apple to extract data from another locked iphone. fox news senior judicial analyst

judge andrew napolitano is here. congress is involved. >> congress has no right to ask them to justify its position in litigation in federal court. he should tell the congress to go to hell if that's what they're going to ask him to do. if they're interested in whether or not apple can help the fbi without violating privacy, that's one thing. if they're going to brow beat him into submission, they're not going to get to first base and they have no right to interfere. the case is before a federal court in that's a separate branch of government. congress does not have the right to interfere. yesterday a federal judge in brooklyn ruled against apple in a -- in favor of apple and against the fbi in a similar application. the two judges, brooklyn and los angeles, are the same rank and level so they are free to disregard each other so the ruling yesterday is not going to determine the outcome of the case in california. >> what do you make of the case itself?

>> the fbi says these crepes had confederates. the confederates are probably out there. we don't know who they are. we need to know who they talked to on the phone, therefore, because they are dead, they have no privacy right. apple should help us get into the phone. that's the government's argument in a nutshell. apple's argument is you can't make us work for you. you can't make us create something that doesn't exist. you want us to destroy our own -- our own product. it will destroy the privacy of hundreds of millions of people, including you, because the fbi and the congress and the supreme court, most of them, use apple products. so a court will have to decide it. in my view the decision was appropriately decided yesterday. it can hire apple engineers away and the brightest minds but it can't make apple work for it. >> the government can figure out a way? >> yes. >> but it can't compel a company
