1:00 am
good morning to you. it is 4:00 am on the east coast. you're watching "fox & friends" firs first. >> hillary clinton and donald trump tightening their grips on the democratic and republican presidential nominations. >> a year ago, people are going to find it hard to believe but i'm a unifyer and when we unify, nobody will stop us.
1:01 am
>> we've come too far to stop now. we've got to keep going, keep working, breaking down those barrier. >> our campaign is the only campaign that has beaten, that can beat and that will beat donald trump. >> the pundits say we're under dogs. i'll accept that. we've all been underdogs. this is a community of underdogs. this is a state of underdogs. this is a country of underdogs. but we will win. >> and just moments ago, speaking of winning, ted cruz securing a victory in alaska. donald trump coming in a very close second. but trump still the big winner of the night. front-runner winning seven states. georgia, virginia, alabama, arkansas, massachusetts, tennessee and vermont. >> and ted cruz now taking home three, including a big win in his home state of texas, as well as alaska and oklahoma. marco rubio, scoring his first win of the primary season in minnesota. >> really needed that one. >> yeah, he did.
1:02 am
if you are keeping score, both john kasich and ben carson leave super tuesday empty handed leaving a total number of delegates for donald trump to 285. ted cruz at 160, marco rubio at 87, john kasich, 25, and ben carson, eight. >> hillary clinton moving closer to cementing her nomination with wins in seven states. bernie sanders still holding on, bringing home four wins. >> for democratic delegates, clinton breaking into the south with 1,001. sanders is sitting with 371. >> we have fox news team coverage live from all across the country on this super tuesday. actually, the day after super tuesday at this point. >> that's true. let's begin with casey stiegel in dallas. >> reporter: hey, heather, i get my days mixed up, too.
1:03 am
we've all been working these crazy hours. big night for ted cruz, clinching a big victory in his hometown of texas. he came out on top in texas last night and in alaska. that word just coming in. let's show you the latest numbers from the lone star state. 33.7% of the vote. businessman donald trump coming in second with 26.8. senator marco rubio placing third with 17.7%. of course, lots and lots of celebrating at cruz headquarters near houston, telling his supporters that republicans need to come together and unite while still taking a few jabs at donald trump as well. listen. >> we can nominate a washington deal maker, profane and vulgar, who has a lifelong pattern of using government power for personal gain.
1:04 am
or we can nominate a proven conservative, who has fought consistently for working men and women and to defend the constitution. >> long lines reported at many polling locations, texas gop saying it had to print more ballots by mid afternoon. as far as those delegates, this is not a winner or take-allstate, donald trump walks away with a second place finish with at least 20 texas delegates. abby and heather? >> proportional states. that is going to matter. now to the second biggest race of the night, thank you very much, casey, donald trump in georgia. >> pulling out a big win in the peach state. live for us in hotlanta with
1:05 am
more on that. >> reporter: good morning to u you, abby and heather. let's take a look at the statewide scoreboard. 39% of gop voters going for trump here in the peach state. marco rubio and ted cruz tying for 24% in georgia. nationally, cruz seems to be edging rubio as a second place contender. here is what mr. trump had to say about that. >> twa a very tough night for marco rubio. he had a tough night. he worked hard. he spent a lot of money. he is a lightweight, as i said many times before. i always liked marco, until about a week ago. he decided to go hostile. you have to be able to win something. he hasn't won anything. and he actually hasn't come very close. >> reporter: trump was referring to recent efforts to return mocking personal attacks. some of it compared it to standing up to the schoolyard bully. the strategy does not seem to have had much impact on the gop race. rough night here in georgia for
1:06 am
ben carson and john kasich. tying at 6% of the georgia vote, well below the 20% threshold needed to score any delegates here in the peach state. heather and abby, back to you. >> marco rubio did finally win that state of minnesota. we turn to virginia. trump took the win in a narrow victory over rubio. >> caroline shively is live for us in washington, d.c. with those results. good morning, caroline. >> reporter: good morning, heather and abby. donald trump beating out senator marco rubio with less than three points. rubio was counting on a win. 34.7% of the votes dpared to rubio's 31.9. cruz follows with almost 17 points, garnering eight delegates.
1:07 am
kasich and carson were asterisks in some states. exit polls show trump got his support from evangelicals less educa educated. he also won slightly with men and voters over 45. rubio got the d.c. suburbs. trump won the rest of most of vergena. if he would have been able to eek things out it would have been his second state. back to you. >> thank you very much, caroline. voters in the volunteer states keeping donald trump's southern momentum going. >> that's right. live from nashville this morning, anna korman, good morning. how are you? >> reporter: you got it, abby. good morning to you. historic voter turnout on the gop side in the volunteer state. and it was largely driven by the man who says he wants to make america great again, mr. donald
1:08 am
trump. voter turnout topping out, about 255,000 now. senator cruz did work on his ground game pore about a year and did spend the most on his television ads, let's take a look at those numbers for you. donald trump 39%, grabbing 30 delegates and 44% of the evangelical vote. senator cruz, 25% of the primary, and kasich and carson at less than 8%. despite two big endorsements for senator marco rubio. governor here and also senator lamar alexander who, despite winning only minnesota -- rubio, that is -- he is vowing to go all the way to the convention in cleveland. take a listen.
1:09 am
>> i will campaign however long it takes, wherever it takes to ensure that i am the next president of the united states. >> when the governor was addressing crowds yesterday he did not mention donald trump by name and said he does not want the party of lincoln and reagan to be dominated and taken over by donald trump. other hand, lieutenant governor ramsey said he was giving a voice to angry and alienated americans and praised donald trump for bringing new voters to the party. >> anna, nice to see you this morning. donald trump cleaning up on super tuesday. no surprise there. ted cruz did take home three states and is leading -- we already called alaska.
1:10 am
and marco rubio taking home one state. what was the big surprise of the night? joining me now of red alert politics and senior political reporter thank you both for joining us this morning. we did declare alaska as a win. that happened in the past, what, 30 minutes for ted cruz. he now has three states. ashley, i will start with you. the biggest surprise? >> i think it was definitely ted cruz. it's not a surprise that donald trump did as well as he did. what no one saw coming was oklahoma nor alaska. we have to remember here that donald trump had the endorsement of sarah palin. she's not really pulling her weight in the sense that she was not able to carry alaska for him. that was a big surprise. going into the next races, which are winner take all march 15th,
1:11 am
we need to evaluate who will be the one to be the viable option to donald trump, which is what both cruz and rubio have been fighting for this entire time. cruz can say i have four wins, iowa, oklahoma, home state of texas and alaska. rubio comes out with minnesota. rubio was able to rack up some delegates so he can make the argument that he can stay in the race. both men now are really going to swing at the front-runner harder than ever. >> and speaking of rubio, we head to his home state of florida and kasich's home state of ohio. all states winner take all in the next big thing to come, which is march 15th. so your biggest surprise this evening? >> actually, in large part, i agree. the biggest surprise actually that no one did what they were supposed to do. ted cruz was saying six months ago, sending out press releases that the primary, super tuesday was going to be his firewall. that he was going to win. because it's all evangelical voters, all hard core voters in
1:12 am
the south. he was supposed to really do well. trump ate into his base. trump was supposed to get to 250 delegates. he's going to come short of that. rubio, obviously, people are saying he had a disappointing night. you would have to agree with that. where do we go from here? where do we go from here? ashley made a good point. conservatives and people who don't want donald trump have to figure out what we need to do. you need kasich to win in ohio and rubio to win in florida. how is that going to work? how will we get to that in two weeks? >> the numbers that we had, we do have donald up by over 250 delegates at this point. he has 285. >> right. >> ted cruz. >> he started the night around 80. he didn't win the 250 last night that he needed. >> i see what you mean. >> that's what he needed to stay on pace with getting the majority. now he can be deprived of majority if he loses a couple of these states on march 15th. you're talking about ohio,
1:13 am
florida, missouri and illinois. those states resemble virginia where rubio almost won, more than texas. i'll put it that way. those are the winner take all states. those are the states that will decide this election and & who the winner. >> ashley, what is your biggest disappointment of the night? >> overall, that's a good question. i think, you know, honestly the surprise there was cruz. as ron said, he was supposed to have this firewall going into the s.e.c. primary and he didn't. the momentum really shifted when donald trump started winning states, which surprised many in the gop, and they started to panic that. panic did play into, okay, in many of these states voters are thinking what is it that we're going to do to take down trump if there were anti-trump sentiments out there? we saw a lot of states where cruz is viable, where they came out to vote for him in droves. we ended up seeing a couple of swing states with oklahoma and alaska. at the end of the day, too, the
1:14 am
1:17 am
welcome back to f fox & friends first. donald trump dominating super tuesday with seven wins from coast to coast. what led to his victory? here to break down fox news exit polls, pollster and partner. good to see you. >> good to see you, too. >> a sense of how voters are feeling. let's start with the big state of texas. when you ask people how they're feeling about the federal government, 91% dissatisfied or angered compared to 8% who feel enthusiastic. >> unbelievable. we know the sentiment.
1:18 am
>> we know that. >> in texas, though, this is 91%. i find fascinating that 91% are angry and cruz still won as somebody who is in office. he had a big night in texas, bigger than ninl expected. >> that is interesting. of those dissatisfied with the government, 33% went to cruz, 30% went to donald trump. which does make sense. >> it does make sense, absolutely. what's going on right now, you can feel it when you're out there. >> that's a great point. texas dems who value honesty most in candidates, 59% of those votes went to bernie sanders. >> they did. that's not surprising either. when we saw the last couple of polls that have come out in the last few states we've already seen sanders polls on trust. hillary does not. >> it comes to evangelicals in georgia, most of them went to donald trump. >> this is a big story. people are shocked to see this. traditionally, evangelicals say i want someone who shares my
1:19 am
values. donald trump doesn't necessarily. evangelicals are saying this is the man for the job. we're seeing it all over the country. as you start to think about it, it really makes sense. >> we asked the voters in georgia the most important issue for them. government spending. >> big draw on a lot of issues. economy overall, government spending, people are really afraid and think they're closely linked together f we're in debt, how are we going to continue to grow as a country? they're closely linked and people want to get out of it. >> people frustrated with the federal government. >> no question. >> we're seeing that play out. >> lee carter, thanks for being with us. good stuff. the time now is 19 minutes after the top of the hour. which, by the way, is 4:00 am on the east coast. donald trump, hillary clinton leading the way. could a new candidate throw this race off course? our next guest says it's not too sblat it might not be who you think.
1:23 am
it was a good night for donald trump and hillary clinton, as both surged ahead with a strong super tuesday showing. both took an opportunity to slam each other during their victory speeches. liste listen. >> work is not to make america great again. america never stopped being great. we have to make america whole. >> she wants to make america whole again. i'm trying to figure out, what is that all about? america make america great again is going to be much better than
1:24 am
making america whole again. >> voters say clinton isn't trust worthi and trump is the anti-politician. what do voters really want in their next president? at the weekly standard, daniel halpern joins us now to weigh n thank you so much for being up early with us today. >> thanks for having me. >> it was an exciting day yesterday. super tuesday over. in terms of the results, what do you think voters want in their president? >> well, a lot of different things, right? a lot of different candidates. even marco rubio got 1.8 million votes yesterday. he didn't have the greatest night. a lot of people got a lot of votes. the front-runners on either side are very, very different. hillary clinton is an establishment democratic, liberal, progressive figure who has been on the scene for a very long time. donald trump is a newcomer,
1:25 am
doing extraordinarily well. speaking his mind, saying whatever comes to him, you know. he, too, is doing well. the democrats, i think, the dynamic we're seeing in the republican race, we have a lot of outsider-ism, we'll see that in the general election. you can see both candidates in the clips that you played, they're clearly pivoting to the general election. >> outsiderism. i like that. in this particular poll, asked would you prefer a president with political experience or political outsider, political outsider winning handily there, 56% to the experienced politician with 38%. then the trustworthiness poll that we were speaking on, clinton. does hillary clinton have the integrity to serve effectively as president? yes, 43% but no, 55%. and that may explain why bernie sanders continues to hold on. >> yeah, totally. and i think he should. if i were bernie sanders, look, first of all, you raised a ton
1:26 am
of money from a ton of different people. you owe it to them to give it a shot. on top of that, it's a two-person race. anything can happen. you're only down 100 delegates in the committed delegate race. you don't know what could happen. hillary clinton has some legal problems. i would hang in there, at least for a little while longer. maybe not go at it, you know -- go ahead. >> i was going to say, you were mentioning a two-person race. as we move toward the general election, based on super tuesday results, do you think it won't be a two-person race, maybe it will be three? do you think michael bloomberg will throw his hat in? >> i think he lost his chance. if it was going to be bernie versus donald trump, he would jump in. it's not -- bernie's not going to do well. it looks like it's going to be hillary clinton against donald trump. senator from nebraska made this case the other day, we're looking at a conservative third party candidate. a lot of conservatives don't feel represented in this
1:27 am
election. >> daniel, thank you so much for your insight. we appreciate it. >> thank you. abby? >> the time is currently 27 after the hour with super tuesday behind us, hillary clinton is now one step closer to securing the democratic nomination. big question now, which gop candidate has the best chance at beating her? our political panel weighs in next.
1:30 am
1:31 am
when we unify, there's nobody, nobody that's going to beat us. >> what a super tuesday! >> i'm grateful to all of you who voted for me. >> the voters have spoken. >> no matter how long it takes. no matter how many states it takes, no matter how many weeks and months it takes, i will campaign as long as it takes and wherever it takes to ensure that i am the next president of the united states. >> trump, front-runner, winning seven states, georgia, virginia, alabama, tennessee, arkansas, massachusetts and vermont. >> and ted cruz taking home a big win in his home state of texas, as well as alaska and oklahoma. and marco rubio winning his first state in minnesota.
1:32 am
>> ben carson and john kasich leave super tuesday empty hand. >> yes, they do, bringing the total delegates fofr donald trump to 285. ted cruz, 161, marco rubio at 87, john kasich at 25 and ben carson at 8. >> hillary clinton, wins in seven state. bernie sanders hanging on bringing home four wins. >> democratic delegates breaking into the thousands with 1,001. sanders has 371. >> it's all about the numbers. that's what counts now. fox team coverage live for you from across the country on this day after super tuesday. >> yes, we do. let's bring in casey stegall in dallas, on ted cruz's big home state win. >> i think it's safe to say for texas senator ted cruz to wake up absolutely elated this morning. after all, he walks away with a
1:33 am
large chunk of those oh, so precious texas delegates he was vying for. in fact, a sweeping win for junior senator from the lone star state by 17%. he won with about 43.7% of the vote. donald trump getting about 6.8%. marco rubio in third with 17.7. the victory party near houston last night filled with hundreds of cheering supporters, where senator cruz not only celebrated and thanked texans for their support but also continuing to talk about the issues. >> i will stand with the people of this country and end corporate welfare. adopt a flat tax and apolish the irs. >> lots of cheers, as you can hear. it was a second-place finish for
1:34 am
donald trump he still walks away with 20 texas delegates because the state awards them proportion@ly based on overall voting totals and each of texas' 36 congressional districts. abby, heather? coming up, it will be winner take all. the peach state primary, extra sweet for donald trump. >> that's right. the republican front-runner pulling out a big win in georgia. jonathan steary is live for us. good morning. >> good morning. donald trump had a great night in georgia. take a look at the scoreboard. marco rubio and ted cruz tied at 24%. ben carson and swron kasich tied at 6%, well below the 20% threshold needed to win any delegates near florida. trump touted himself as the most likely gop democrat to win
1:35 am
against front-runner hillary clinton. >> you see the polls. i beat hillary in many polls. i don't think marco will be able to beat her. in all fairness, i think ted is going to have a very hard time. ted has, at least, a shot because at least he has won a little bit. >> they watched marco rubio as a second place contender across super tuesday states. one of the biggest surprises has been donald trump's ability to win eveng angelical voters here the deep south, once thought to be a primary constituency of ted cruz. back to you, heather and ab. >> i jonathan serrie live for us this morning. thank you very much. rubio coming in close, just 3% behind. >> in washington, d.c. with more on those results. kristen, you've been here pretty much all night as well. what's the reaction there and what does this mean? >> reporter: virginia was a
1:36 am
state marco roobio really wanted and needed to win. in the days leading up to super tuesday he invested time and resources in that state. in the end he came in second. trump took the state. kroourz came cruz came in third at 16%. rubio got 16 delegates. trump got 17. this really is more of a symbolic, psychological loss for the rub beio campaign. rubio is running as an establishment candidate and really needed virginia. it's an establishment state. there's a lot of well-educated, moderate republicans, suburbs of washington, d.c. so a lot of people who live and work in that state work for the federal government. he won around the state capital in richmond but it wasn't enough to overtake trump in the more rural counties. exit polls showed trump beat
1:37 am
rubio winning voters with less education, less money. voters who want change and voters who are angry. trump is calling for rubio and cruz to drop out but trump says they're not going anywhere. i almost called you trump, but heather and abby, back to you. >> it's early. the race in alaska, just called for ted cruz. live for us with that part of the coverage, adam, this is a significant day for him. huge win. >> people thought it would be between cruz and trump. a lot of voters on the republican side felt that was a positive for him. it did play out today. numbers didn't come in for a couple of hours. it was just called recently. ted cruz took the state, 46.4%,
1:38 am
and 33.5%. kasich and carson did not pick up any. over 22,000 republicans voted in alaska. they printed 25,000 ballots. significantly higher. it's called the republican preference poll held super tuesday. 28 delegates all told sent from alaska to the convention. larger than usual. all-republican delegation. majority in the state legislature. of those delegates three will be unpledged and can choose the number they want to when they go to the republican convention. last frontier did come through. the largest state was a very small margin and the last to come in on super tuesday. democrats don't actually caucus in alaska until later this month. back to you guys. >> adam, thank you.
1:39 am
>> and hillary clinton coming up with a huge night. is it the end of the road for the sanders campaign? here to weigh in is our political panel democratic strategist brian benjamin and campaign director senator for american progress action emily kisch. thank you for being with us. hillary had a big night but bernie sanders won four of those states, raising more than $40 million f you're bernie's campaign, are you thinking at this point he should get out? >> no. he's definitely going to stay in. this is a huge blow for him. he can raise all the money in the world. if he's not able to somehow compete with women voters it's exercise of him pushing hillary to the left. a lot of us democrats like this fight. hillary clinton hillary does better under pressure. it's clear. bernie pushed her in a way we never saw coming.
1:40 am
i don't see his path to the nomination after last night. >> can he still compete with hillary clinton? she had a slow start basically tying him in iowa. she had big wins yesterday. >> definitely a huge day for clinton. for sanders' supporters, this is exactly where -- this is what they love, a sliver of hope. a sliver of hope is what drives the sanders base. delegates aren't there. the states aren't there. but the money keeps pouring in. that's why candidates stay in. they only drop out of races when they run out of money. for a sanders' base, i can see him wanting to stay in and wanting to donate for a while. >> fox news exit polls come in overnight showing how angry voters are to government and sanders speaks directly to that. assuming hillary clinton is the nominee, next question is, who is the republican that is best to go up against her to win? >> sounds like trump. i mean, trump is -- >> the polls would show that he actually does the worst against her. >> we'll see that when we get to
1:41 am
that point. look what he's doing. look what he did in virginia. he is driving record turnout, bringing out independents. he's bringing out somebody. for rubio to lose virginia, it's incredible. trump is doing well in the north, in the south. one of the things i like about bernie being in the race, obviously, generates more enthusiasm in the party. we're not turning out the way republicans are turning out. trump is probably -- i know no one wants to hear that. they want to hear it's rubio, it's rubio. we can't deny what trump is doing in this republican primary. >> what do you think about that? you look at our most recent polling of republicans going up against hillary clinton and donald trump does the worst, losing to her. could you see that changing if trump is ultimately the nominee? >> i actually think that would stay consistent. i'm going to challenge that for a second. i do actually think that a trump/clinton face-off changes the calculation a little bit. going into this election year, people assumed it would be a base site, right turning out and
1:42 am
left turning out and seeing how much enthusiasm was there. the country is about evenly divided in registration. everyone thought it would be a base fight but trump versus clinton totally changes the calculation. economic republicans who trump does not speak to. and they think clinton -- may not agree with everything, may not love her. republicans don't need to love their candidate. they may end up drawing a lot of independents and a lot of republicans toward clinton if that ends up being the head-to-head. >> we're seeing a lot of that this election cycle. emily, brian, thanks for being with us. >> the time now is 15 minutes until the top of the hour. pancakes with a side of politics. how about that? we're back on the ground live in nashville, talking to diners about who they voted for and why. and stay with fox news for more political coverage. tomorrow night's gop debate, remember that, moderated by brett baier, megyn kelly and
1:46 am
you are watching fox and friends first. donald trump, hillary clinton surging to victory down south. what are voters thinking this morning? >> let's ask anna koimann. she's live, talking about who voters voted for and why. pancakes sound good right now. >> working on some biscuits right now, ladies, in music city in tennessee, in nashville. hope everybody is doing well. i think the voters are hungry, working up an appetite. historical voter turnout, 255,000 showed up. this is bob the chef at sam's place. good morning. >> good morning. >> what are you cooking up for us? >> little american classic,
1:47 am
steak and eggs. >> steak and eggs? all right. i'll let you work on that. it smells so delicious. and we'll talk to roger timmons, the owner of sam's place. good morning. >> good morning. >> unfortunately you said you didn't make it out to the polls yesterday? >> correct. >> you've been supporting who? >> reporter: donald trump. >> why is that? >> i feel he will be able to make the most difference. he has built companies. he's -- like i said i think he will be the one to make the change. >> exit poll force tennessee are showing that voters are fed up with illegal immigration, with the federal government and they think that donald trump is the best one to fix the economy. of those three little elements i gave you, what resonates with you? >> fed up with the federal government and all the things they are incompetent to fix. >> what do you make of all the mud slinging that's been going on? does that bother you? does his temperament bother you? >> there are some concerns
1:48 am
there. mud slinging went on since day one in politics, i believe. this is no different on either side of the poll, democratic or republican. >> you see that senator rubio is getting into the fight, talking about the spray tan and calling him a con artist. >> taking the moral high ground for cruz or rubio might work for them. obviously we've seen with the polls that . >> would you talk to your relatives or friends and family in other states? >> absolutely. i don't think my friends and family necessarily sway my vote. issues could still come up. we'll see if trump tones it down, like he said.
1:49 am
>> roger, thank you for your time today. we'll go eat biscuits, steaks and eggs at sam's place f you live in nashville come on down and keep us company. we'll be talking to voters all morning long. back to you, heather and abby. >> sounds good. thank you, anna. time now is about ten minutes until the top of the hour. you heard anna talking about donald trump's speech there. some folks saying the best part of his victory speech goes to chris christie. >> did you see this? his facial expression? it's now going viral. that's next. hey, need fast heartburn relief? try cool mint zantac. it releases a cooling sensation in your mouth and throat. zantac works in as little as 30 minutes. nexium can take 24 hours. try cool mint zantac. no pill relieves heartburn faster.
