>> donald trump says he admires vladimir putin, at the same time he has called george w. bush a liar.$) that is a twisted example of evil trumping good. here's what i know, donald trump is a phony, a fraud. his promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. [cheers and applause] >> now, in response, a few hours later in maine, mr. trump said this: >> i heardh) that mitt romney made a fairly long speech. [crowd booing] >> and i mean honestly, i will just address it quickly because it's irrelevant. [ laughter ] look, mitt is a failed candidate. he failed. he failed horribly. i am not a fan of barack obama, and that was a race that i backed mitt romney. i backed him. can you see how loyal he is. he was begging for my endorsement. i could have said mitt, drop to your knees. he would have dropped to his knees.

he was begging. >> now, a tiff between romney trump really doesn't matter. but what is significant is that governor romney is now leading the charge against donald trump. that means the governor has an eye on the republican convention. he gave a hint of that by talking about hillary clinton. >> for the last three decades the clintons have lived at the intersection of money and politics, trading their political influence to enrich their personal finances. capitalism. it disgusts the american people and causes them to lose faith in our political process. a person so untrustworthy and dishonest/x as hillary clinton must not become president. [cheers and applause] much liken speech, did it not? but secretary clinton will become president if the republican party continues to divide. and, at this point, talking points does not see detente

any time soon. and that's the memo from detroit. now for the reaction and set up here in the motor city bret baier one of the moderators this evening. romney becomes part of the debate, correct? >> he does. i'm not going to tell you the exact questions but that speech, that, as you point out, rallying the never trump crowd is a message that obviously three of the candidates are signing on to on this stage. and i think you are right. i think that this was an establishment tip of the hat, rally the forces. don't let trump win. he almost laid out a blueprint for kasich to win ohio, for rubio to win florida. for ted cruz to win where he can win so they can do a contested convention. it's still, bill, a narrow path, and there is a lot of anger that donald trump is riding against people like the establishment and mitt romney. >> now, i don't expect mitt romney's speech to convince anyone who supports donald trump to bail. all right? i don't think that's going

to happen. not a lot of compatibility between the trump supporters and people who respect mitt romney there is a whole different world there. there are a whole lotcbuuof republicans at this point according to the votes, north the polls, the votes, who don't want donald trump to be the nominee than do even though he leads by a substantial margin, correct? >> exactly right. look atçm super tuesday states 3 5%. 36%. that was the high mark. so you think that the rest of the party there is a split but they are not voting for donald trump. so that is what mitt romney is trying to mime with this effort to consolidate the anti-trump crowd. >> i thought trump was a little restrained in maine today. >> he was. >> you know, he does what he always does. believe me, i don't see that as a deficit for trump. i think that's a strong point because he comes back and his supporters admire that but he wasn't as brutal on romney. he didn't call him little mitt or talk about his ears.

all right. now, you guys, you and wallace and megyn kelly have been here a couple days and you prepare for the debate. >> we do. >> when there are three moderators you have to divide up the questioning. do you throw pies? you want to ask certain people. >> we divide up into different buckets which are called topics. policy issues. then we go through this process refining questions. really accomplishing them down, getting them as tight as we possibly can it's a we go after each other. and chris and megyn and i, i think we have a good ñ formula. >> what do you have pinheaded fox news executives with you and are they there with you too? >> no, not the pinhead ones. >> this is why baier gets a show when he is 22 years old. you have other people there advising you. >> a few. in the room. >> so you kick it around and

tonight? >> listen, it may. we're prepared for it it we have the fourth moderator, the bell, which was ignored in the last debate. >> loud bell. >> it's pretty loud. it's not a horn but it's a nice bell. >> you might get a fog horn. that might do it? >> we will be trying to keep it it on the rails. listen, there is a lot of policy to talk about. a lot of details. >> it's all going to be romney. those three guys will take what romney said and ram it downg >> probably not kasich but we will see. >> you don't think kasich will do it at this point. >> i don't know if he will go as aggressive. he hasn't yet. we will see if he turns it up. >> we are supposed to have all four of the candidates on the factor after the debate. we'll see. but, again, i will be there and i will be roaming, not tied to a chair. how many more debates can be constructive? 11 debates and, trump, i don't know if he is going to p &c @&c@ him. >> put it in context. last time we had 22. this is half of the debates

trump steaks. and trump mortgage. a business genius he is not. >> continuing now with our lead story, the republican party in chaos. joining us from washington, newt gingrich. so how do you assess mitt romney's speech today? why did he give it today? what is he trying to accomplish? >> well, let me say first of all i was a little surprised just because i was with mitt in las vegas when donald trump endorsed him and i remember how efusively he thanked him as a great job creator. it was a little over the top today. mitt represents the panic of the establishment of the republican party. they held their breath through super tuesday. it didn't work. and now they're faced with a very real prospect of donald trump becoming the leader of the party and it absolutely >> why? >> they cannot imagine sharing -- well, because, he is an outsider. he is not them. he is not part of the club. he is uncontrollable.

he hasn't been through the initiation rights. he didn't belong to the secret society. and i think that they don't see him -- they have no idea they don't want to pay attention to him. you are right, by the way, he has only gotten 35 to 40% of the vote. he is not yet guaranteed to being the nominee but week by week is he gaining ground and nationally he is gaining strength. and i think that what you are going to see now for two weeks is an all-out frenzy. they have to beat him in ohio and they have to beat him in florida or this is over because those are winner-take-all states. and if he has ohio and florida's delegates, he will become unstoppable. >> okay. the justification for mitt romney for the republican security people who came out today and said they don't want trump to be president, the justification is that he doesn't have specific plans

to improve the nation and that he's not conducting himself the way that a traditional president might. in your opinion, is that unfair to donald trump? unfair. let me draw into two parts. first of all, in terms of style, donald trump is this very strange cross between andrew jackson, theodore roosevelt, and p.t. barnum. is he a man totally unique. he lives life at 100 percent pace. i have never seen anything like it. even for a guy as wealthy as he is, it is amazing that he does as well as he does with the national media and with the voters and is he a upon upon -- phenomenon. i understand if you are used to the normal presidency, trump really rattles you and makes you upset is. on policy they have a much more fundamental difference. it's not that they don't have policies. it's that they deeply disagree with him. he would build a wall.

nobody should be confused about this. if he becomes president, there is going to be a wall. >> i don't think there are too many republicans, mr. speaker, i don't think there are too many republicans that object to a wall being built. i don't. >> no. but the national. >> i have been advocating that for years. >> but the national security establishment does. >> -- oh, i don't know about that. maybe you are right but i against terrorism because they think that trump is going to exacerbate muslim hatred toward the u.s.a. and then the trade wars that trump is espousing they say, look, if you get into trade wars with china and other us into a recession. so it looks to me that it's an issue oriented situation. >> well, it is. >>+jñ okay. go. >> but, look, the objective reality is that donald trump is an american nationalist in an old fashioned sense.

we have been governed by elites and i have been part of -- look, i helped pass nafta. i have been through all this stuff. the question is whether or not you think we need to take a deep breath and rethink some of what we are doing. we have had a very clear policy since world war ii. we have built a worldwide system that has worked reasonably well. the trump argument is that that system now no longer serves american interests. it serves chinese or russian or other interests. this is a real honest fight and the traditional national security group in the republican party is appalled by the degree to which trump would disrupt the system that's been built since world war are 2. >> all right. so both sides that you're saying are sincere in their contrariness toward the other. is that what you are saying? they are both sincere. >> they are sincere, and it's real. >> you bet it's real. if trump gets the nomination, will you campaign for him?

>> i going to support the republican nominee. >>, no, no, no. campaign for. are you going to be up there with chris christie and donald trump? >> you know, i mean, first of all, as anjq analyst on fox i don't know how much campaigning i will do. >> well, we will fire you. >> thank you very much, bill. i appreciate that opportunity. if you remember, mitt was all set to rupp. i think he maybe still has a desire maybe at the convention to try to get some kind of a thing. hillary clinton will destroy him in the election. assuming she isñ11=]uz run, assuming she is not arrested for the email situation. now, that announcement caused judge andrew napolitano a judicial analyst says he believes mrs. clinton will be eventually indicted. joining us from chicago austan goolsbee. the immunity deal, professor, did that catch your attention? >> it got my attention but, economist. i'm not a legal expert. i would note this same guy that they gave immunity to has been pleading the fifth and that's why they didn't have any testimony. but the clinton people have been asking him to testify. so, i don't know what to make of it. do you believe though that there is grave and i mean grave concern inside the hillary clinton campaign because of the fbi's fairly aggressive posture? >> maybe. like i say, i can't tell if this is an aggressive posture because they're getting the guy to testify that the clintons wanted to

testify, to establish that there was nothing untoward aboujw it. i'm sure they are nervous. how could one not be nervous about any investigation until you're cleared? i mean, i'm sure they are nervous. >> do you believe that democrats across the country who are largely supporting hillary clinton now feel the same way? there is some unease about this whole thing or are they just use to one thing after another with secretary clinton? >> well, i don't think i would describe it as used to that from hillary clinton. i would say there is always some unease when things like this are going on. but they are used to the republicans trying to make a lot out of anything that comes up. so, one it was the glasses, then it was the benghazi and then it was the email. >> the justice department. >> we will see what they

come out with. >> iyñ3ñy understand. i'm wondering if there is a plan b behind the scenes. you wouldn't know that you are in chicago. you used to be with the obama administration. i am just wondering what the level of concern is. and i guess it's impossible to figure it out. now, mitt romney coming after trump, and we believe that that will be in the first hour of the debate tonight. no economist7] centerpiece. we know no fox moderators are going to ask about it. do you think this is a big deal? >> i don't really think it's a big deal. has been happening,óm but i don't think there is that big of a contingent among republicans who are waiting and asking themselves i wonder what mitt romney thinks of donald trump. you know, to a broader level before, right now donald trump has got 35, 40% of the republican primary

electorate, and that's about 15 million people. but you have got to get 65 million people to vote for you to become the president. so, really, the question ought to be not what do trump supporters think, but what do the 50 million people who are are not yet decided whether they're going to vote for trump, what do they think? and it might have more of an impact on them. >> okay. i agree. i don't think the trump supporters care at all. greta had a snap poll, you know, not scientific. and it came out the way i thought it was. anybody that like donald trump probably doesn't like mitt romney and agrees with mr. trump that romney is a loser and whatever he says is doesn't matter. but i think trump knows he has to expand the tent. that being said though, there is a momentum starting to form as newt gingrich just said, among -- they call them establishment republicans. i don't know if that's the correct word, among many republicans stall warts to

of muslims cheering in new jersey when the world trade center towers came down. even chris christie, who has endorsed you said it never happened. so my question, mr. trump is do you understand why people worry about your relationship witháfthe truth? >> good question. romney hit all those points by the way today in his speech in utah. that's a really good question and i hope they are watching, the three moderators. i think they are. maybe they will get into it. some might say though, bernie, it's a gotcha question. you are running down the litany and you really shouldn't be going for a gotcha in any way, shape, or form. >> it isn't a a gotcha in any way, shape, or form. the problem isn't with my question. the problem is that too many people watching us right now they say they want fair and balanced journalism, they journalism, but they don't.

they want you and me and krauthammer and everybody else to support whoever they support. so if you say something tough about rubio, you will hear it from rubio's people. and you have. if you say something about trump, you will hear it from trump's people. i don't have a problem%q! this. they have a problem with this. and that finally needs to be said. >> okay. do you -- many of the people who support donald trump or ted cruz or rubio or kasichj!'4@ believe that their overall approach is what's important, and it isn't important that you say you saw a bunch of muslims jumping up and down after 9/11. that you might have nuanced the iraq war a little bit more than you said you did. okay? that's not important to them. what's important is what you're going to do going forward. and i think that's what the trump supporters are believing. would i be wrong? >> no. the key word is that's what

they're believing. but i believe that trump experiment is going to end badly. let's say donald trump does not, for whatever reason,=m no matter how legitimate it may be, does not get the nomination, in that case the republicans will lose in 2000 it 16 because, as you supporters will think he got robbed, you know, the nomination was taken by the establishment or whatever, and a lot of them will sit home. but let's say he does get the nomination, okay? he will, as you have said many times, he will get many many democrats. but, he will lose as we'reç seeing every day many republicans. and no candidate can win. no candidate can win without not only support but massive support from his own party. that's why i say i think this experiment is going to

end badly and i say that even if donald trump wins the nomination and wins the white house. it will still end badly. >> okay. i'm not of that opinion. but i have another question for you. why do you think that donald trump has dominated the primary voting, voting so far? the others are more experienceed? >> >> because i think more than anything else, donald trump is a symbol. the symbol is a great big middle finger to the establishment, to the elites, to politics as usual. people who support donald trump, not all people but many they don't care about his tax policy. they don't care about his tariffs, which would wreck our economy. they don't care. they care about that he comes across as a strong man. that's what they care about.

except if he ever gets elected, he is goingr to actually do something. and if he starts in to use the tariff example, we're going to have a war between china and the -- a trade war that is between china and the united states, between mexico and the united states. i'm with mitt romney on this. he is not good for the future of this country, even in terms of business, but he is a symbol and the symbol is the middle finger and that's what all ordinary americans, all the ordinary americans, i use that term in the best sense, are giving the middle finger to the elites in this country. >> and some of the elites deserve it. that's for sure. bernie goldberg, everybody. when we come right back from detroit, dana perino and jesse watters. moments away.

out-of-party experience today. this is unlike i have ever known in my lifetime. i grew up in a republican household. my grandfather was a county commissioner in western county wyoming. so if that makes me establishment, then i'm a lifelong conservative. i concede that i know mitt romney was giving voice to a lot of frustration. when you say establishment, bill, i think a lot of people here too moderate, squishy, not conservative enough. that's actually, i think, the wrong way to look at what mitt romney was saying today. mitt romney was saying i'm concerned about what i sees a the[iç÷ legacy and history of the republican party and the future of it. however, i don't think that mitt romney made thepi sale today. i think it would be maybe effective with some people, but if you are dug in between trump and one of the other candidates, i don't know if your mind was changed by romney this afternoon. >> isn't it impossible at

this juncture to change the mind of any trump supporter because they are so -- i mean, you have got to give donald trump credit for being such a powerful presence that he has millions of people they don't care what you say about them. they don't care what he says. they are going to vote for him. >> the exit polls and in all the contests so far. people who say they want someone to tells it like it is he wins by a mile. the thing is what newt gingrich said on your program earlier is exactly right and you said it in your talking points memo. if the republican party cannot find a way to union be phi, there is no way that they can beat hillary clinton. it is already going to be so difficult for a republican to beat her in the electoral college the way that the democrats look at it, out of the 270 votes needed, she has got about 246. so, if she wins florida. >> in my tally she has 282. i"the o'reilly electoral college tally, 282. i say that with a huge

caveat. donald trump is such a commanding presence that if things go right for him he can persuade and he can change the dynamic that's in place right now. he can dob it. shear force of personality. i mean, this is a guy that wherever he goes is going to get people to like him or not. and so you don't, you can't really. >> but without all the republicans -- i don't think that he can do that without convincing all of the republicans that mitt romney was speaking to today. do you? >> no. but he is not going to be able to do that. there is going to be a lot of republicans that don't vote for him. he is going to get independents and he is going to get people who are nothing. they are just going to show up. >> one of my biggest concerns for the republican party is wishful thinking. it's possible that that is true but i would not guarantee it it democrats have been slow to turn out this season so far. but they are going to consolidate behind her, and the campaign against him has
