know, probably not. but it shows you the great interest. they found it in al capone's vault. >> wow. hello welcome to america's election headquarters. right now we're waiting for the results from "the five" states that went to follows today and the question right now is ted cruz leading potentially because of those attacks on donald trump? are they working? hello, everyone. we are likely to get the projections from the associated press where as you can see there in kansas you got ted cruz at 51%. the race has been called there. and you got donald trump at 24.2%. trailing behind is marco rubio at 14.4%. voters across five states will render their decision today.
3:01 pm
as republicans in kansas already voting there. and that race is call. kaiser permanente, louisiana and maine. democrats in kansas, louisiana and nebraska. going into this weekend's round of voting donald trump led his republican rivals in delegates just over a quarter of the way to the finish line to seal the nomination. now on the democratic side, hillary clinton leading bernie sanders in delegates with just under half what she needs to win. we have fox news team coverage. mike emanuel is in detroit where democrats will debate tomorrow night ahead of tuesday's primary and kristen fisher is live in our newsroom and molly line is in lewiston, maine for today's republican caucus and we'll start with doug who is in new orleans. doug? >> reporter: polls have been few
3:02 pm
and far in between in louisiana. people not paying not quite as much attention to the delegates for the gop. there's tremendous enthusiasm and passion about the race here. we saw this last night at the donald trump rally on the shores of lake pontchartrain. thousands of people showed up for that rally including many from black lives matter protest. they disrupted the speech on many occasions. other people resented that in the crowd. there were occasional bouts of fist fist-a-cuffs. donald trump handled it. >> i'm talking about in places where republicans don't have a chance of winning. michigan, new york. you look at the polling numbers. hillary cannot even come close to me in michigan and in new york we're going to give her a big run. >> reporter: roughly at the same
3:03 pm
time ted cruz was holding another rally on the other side of lake pontchartrain where he encouraged people to join his team, he is the only viable alternative to donald trump. >> i would urge every candidate in this race if you have not had a pattern of winning state after state, if you have not amassed enough delegates to have a credible shot at delegates what it takes republican candidate i encourage every candidate to consider coming together. >> reporter: cruz has moved many of his staffers to closed midwest and northeast operations to state of florida. he's 207g different offices in the state of florida. his intention, obviously, to take marco rubio out. to make him lose in his own home state. it's a hail mary, a long shot by ted cruz. basically to try to get the convention keep donald trump from earning the nomination.
3:04 pm
once he gets there cruz hopes the official washington establishment, the rnc will see him as the lesser of two evils as washington outsiders. who will you take, ted cruz or rodney dangerfield at the country club. that's his view. >> let's talk about the democratic race. what are we expecting, doug? >> reporter: well, again, the polling is a little bit of an impediment because it's few and far between. as goes the rest of the south so likely will go louisiana. hillary clinton has been a powerhouse in the south states in large part because of the african-american vote. we saw that in georgia, south carolina. it probably will hold true here as well. this state has 30 plus percent of the 0 population. that's a huge number. second highest in the united states. if they turn out as they have in those other states she will go running away with this race here in louisiana. >> looking good in my home town
3:05 pm
of new orleans. >> let's head up to maine. 22 delegates are in line in the caucuses and the last poll closes two hours from,000. we expect the final results shortly of a that. with 7% voted that senator ted cruz is leading donald trump in maine, 48-35%. that's important because if it holds maine has a rule where if you get 50% and above it's winner takes all. ted cruz if he gets two more percentage votes he can get all the delegates in that state. molly? >> reporter: you are absolutely right. the polls are closing in a little less than an hour. 22 locations across maine. republicans could gather and cast their ballots. the counting, all of the counting will get under way. i'm hearing from party officials they are expecting record turn out here in maine, some party leaders telling me the turn out could double even triple numbers they've seen in previous years.
3:06 pm
the main gop has initiated a history making change this year. they are shifting from the nonbinding straw polls of the not so distant past to a binding process where voters pop in, take a ballot and cast their vote for the republican they want to see in the white house. then they can leave. choose to participate in other activities or not. in 2012 more than 6,000 people participated. this year maine republicans prepped to handle far more. >> all i can tell you is we thought we were being ambitious by printing 50,000 ballots. after watching the early participation in the early states we increased it to 80,000 the number of ballots we printed just to be on the safe side. >> reporter: we are inside the ballroom where later on this evening here at the gop after party we're expecting the results to be given out. about 9:00 we expect final results. we're told you mentioned eric if one of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote, 50%
3:07 pm
plus one then it's winner takes all. all of the candidates need to get at least 10% to take anything and then divided proportionally amongst the candidates. >> thanks so much. governor paula paige backs trump. let's go up to waterville and ask if ted cruz can stop donald trump's momentum there and grab that magic 50% to take all of the delegates. the professor of colby college will join us in tomorrow's democratic caucus vote in maine. eric while maine comes tomorrow for democrats three states on the line today for hillary clinton and bernie sanders, but they are already looking at future contests and both make their way to michigan for a campaign event ahead of tuesday's primary there. senior political correspondent mike emanuel is live from the motor city with more. mike? >> reporter: three democratic
3:08 pm
contests as you mentioned today but the candidates themselves are totally focused on upcoming primaries here in the midwest. senator bernie sanders is splitting his time between ohio and michigan today. his focus in kwleef was on an african-american audience making reference to hillary clinton a few times and said he's running because there are problems with the way the country success led and big money can't run everything. sanders says his differences with clinton are not personal. >> sometimes people get confused with the kinds of vicious personal attacks being made by republicans against each other. what we're seeing in the republican presidential process is like a sixth grade food fight that you see in a cafeteria. what we're trying to do and have from day one is appreciate our differences, which are very strong with secretary clinton. >> hillary clinton is spending the weekend here in michigan.
3:09 pm
that tells you how significant she considers michigan. she met earlier with african-american pastors and clinton has taken a lot of heat from sanders here in the midwest on her position over the years on free trade. here is her response. >> when it comes to trade deals, here's my standard. i won't support any agreement unless it helps create good jobs and higher wages for american workers and protects our national security. i need to be able to look into the eyes of any hard-working american, anywhere in our country, and say this deal will help raise your income. >> reporter: clinton will speak at a michigan democratic party event later this evening here at the mgm. we'll be inside for it but there's a tremendous focus ahead of tuesday's michigan primary. >> absolutely. thank you very much. just a short time ago we learned ted cruz won the cpac straw poll. an important data point
3:10 pm
revealing who is resonating with conservative activist. kristen fisher joins us live from washington with the latest. >> reporter: it appears as trump decision to skip cpac may have hurt him. he came in a distant third to marco rubio and ted cruz. cruz won the straw poll. rubio came in second and then trump in third at 15%. followed by kasich with 8% of the vote. now trump was the only republican presidential candidate who did not speak at cpac. he cancelled less than 24 hours before he was supposed to speak. cpac organizers say he backed out because they refused to give into his demands. trump's campaign says that's not true. they said it was a strategic decision. people are voting or caucusing and trump needed to be out on the campaign trail campaigning. >> we need to get out today -- we got a caucus. i'm going with you. we're going to caucus and after
3:11 pm
making this huge u-turn to kansas, if i lose i'm going to be so angry at you. oh. >> reporter: trump's words, he's probably very angry with those voters in kansas because we now know trump lost kansas he lost to cruz. marco rubio though spoke this morning and he was very well received. rubio received his biggest applause, standing ovation when he said that the conservative movement is being hijacked by someone who is not a conservative. >> if you had told me a year ago that the front-runner at this stage in the republican campaign would be a supporter of planned parenthood, doesn't stand with israel, who has a long record of supporting government-sponsored health care i would say on what planet would that be the republican front-runner if the conservative movement is hijacked by someone who is not a conservative. [ cheers and applause ]
3:12 pm
>> reporter: that applause went on for a very long time. now something else about this straw poll. cpac asked attendees for their top vp picks and the winner of that straw poll was south carolina governor nikki haley, followed by john kasich and carly fiorina. >> john kasich said no way he's not going for number two. >> our special election coverage tonight begins two hours from now. anchored by bill hammer and martha mcgowan. there's bill by his map who will now explain all. bill, it's 6:12 eastern time. a lot of people are wondering is this the of a trend for ted cruz? he's ahead in maine. or is it -- >> i tell you, i'll give you a maybe there. this is where we are. the states in gold, we want to call them tangerine.
3:13 pm
kansas is a contest for democrats. you mentioned kansas. let's start there. we already called it. according to the associated press cruz will win and handedly. he campaigned in kansas on wednesday of this week. he was there yesterday. he was there today as well. we just heard from donald trump a moment ago he was down here in wichita. ted cruz an easy winner there in the state of kansas. the other contest ongoing with a little bit of data coming in is the state of maine. not a lot of data. we're at 7%. here cruz has the advantage at 48-35%. difference of 13 in the state of maine. at the moment, eric. >> what's fascinating we said about that if he gates smidgen, two more points he can get all the delegates as opposed to being proportional. >> right now if you look at some of these contests, eric and you see the geography that's starting to take shape for some of these candidates, just look
3:14 pm
at the center part of the country where we've had battles so far. go back to iowa the caucus there. ted cruz was the winner. now you can pop on down kansas and that caucus ted cruz was a winner. he won his neighboring state of oklahoma. he's from texas. he won that on super tuesday along with texas as well. so on the map geographically speaking that's cruz country. remember on super tuesday he had that sec fire wall that did not pan out. instead it was trump. you go back to south carolina a couple of weeks ago. trump is in purple. he won south carolina, won georgia, won tennessee, won alabama. he also won arkansas the other day as well. tonight there's a contest here in louisiana for that primary. if you're ted cruz you kind of want to feel pretty good about it based on history. 2012 in louisiana, santorum easily won over mitt romney, won every parish in louisiana back in 2008 just by a squeaker it was huckabee edging out john
3:15 pm
mccain that year. so if you're cruz you're feeling good. some of the polling suggests trump. we'll see how that goes shortly. maybe about two, three hours we can make a call on louisiana. snienlly, anything on florida. trump was there. that's a big winner take all. >> it's fascinating what's happening in florida. ted cruz announced earlier that he's opening up ten offices statewide in florida. he wants to compete down there. this is a contest that will not happen for ten more days. march 15th, it is winner take all. 99 delegates on the line. trump was here in orlando today, that i-4 kricorridor. florida is about to get hammered by these three campaigns and rubio is from florida. if you can make a case if he done win his home state it makes it very difficult for his campaign to continue. likewise, ohio goes, kasich has said he'll win ohio but if he
3:16 pm
done his campaign is over. that's winner take all at 66 delegates in the state of ohio. today will tell us something, no question about it, eric. but there will be an intense focus regardless of the without come today in those four or five states. >> you got one in tonight. kansas. we'll see about towers. we'll see you two hours from now. >> our special election coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. eastern as the returns come in. of course monday night a big evening for "special report." going to be a special, "special report" town hall. hillary clinton. yes. and bernie sanders hosted by bret baier, the anchor. monday night at 6:00 p.m. eastern right here on america's election headquarters, your headquarters, the fox news channel. >> absolutely. i think bill should call that color mustard yellow. the ap declaring ted cruz the winner of the kansas republican caucuses. we're far from finished as voters continue to gather for caucuses and primaries in four

if you want to reignite the spirit of america we reignite the spirit in u.p. and send the message to the rest of the country we know how to solve problems and take care of one another and we don't need a bunch of politicians coming in here telling us how to do it. >> john kasich campaigning in michigan's upper peninsula. he's confident the contest will go all the way to the convention. if he wins his home state of ohio a winner take all state with 66 delegates on the line and neighboring michigan takes up his cause this coming tuesday his prediction may come true.
3:22 pm
joining me now trent duffy, he works for the kasich presidential campaign. let's take it step by step. apart from the governor's success rate in his home state of ohio, his positive american values, and the fact that he's the last governor standing, what are you hearing on the campaign trail from kasich supporters imploring him to stay in the race? >> we're seeing a real surge in michigan. the debate on thursday where governor kasich showed his leadership and showed his vision to bring america together and to move us forward really has seen a spike in the polls in michigan. he was there today. he'll be campaigning hard there. we see both in public and private polls that there's a significant surge for him in michigan. so we're hoping that he's going to continue to do well and then it does move to ohio which is his home state where we expect for him to do very well and that will catapult him into the position where he could start to
3:23 pm
lay out his path to the nomination. so the plan is working out the way it was planned and we feel confident about where we are. >> i want to get to michigan in a moment but i want to hear what the voters are saying to governor kasich out there on the campaign trail. why do they like him? >> well the voters like john kasich and they are liking him more and more because frankly he's getting more of a chance to show his vision. he has great experience in terms of his executive ability. he's created over 417,000 new jobs in ohio. he has done the same thing in terms of the united states, balancing the budget, cutting taxes, moving america forward and really working together again. that's what this country wants and that's why the american voters are responding to his positive message. he's not engaged in name calling and mud slinging and all the insults. americans are sick and tired of that. it might make for good hollywood, make for good reality
3:24 pm
tv but not the kind of president we want. you see more people turning out for governor kasich's rallies. he had two incredible rallies in michigan. he's surging in the polls. that's why the momentum is with him as we go forward. >> the governor is in michigan because as bill pointed out we have come tuesday 59 delegates up for grabs. so because you brought michigan up first, mr. duffy, that tells me you believe for your campaign that michigan is very important, much like the political score keepers are saying and then, of course, your come to ohio march 15th, the governor says listen don't worry about it i'm going to win ohio. so you got two states there, michigan where perhaps the governor can slow down trump's roll if you will and then he has to take ohio in order for him to stay in the campaign according to many. >> well that's according to him too. he said if he doesn't win ohio he'll leave. he feels very confident about ohio. he guaranteed he'll win. we have a ground game.
3:25 pm
john kasich won re-election of ohio with 56% of the state. ohio is a tough state it goes back and forth between republicans and democrats. ohio is a bellwether for the national race. illinois has a primary coming up. we just got the endorsement of the chicago sun teenagers a conservati conservati -- chicago sun time, a conservative paper. >> quickly before i let you go can you envision this, come july a consensus republican national convention, your candidate governor kasich comes in and saves the day for the more traditional arm of the republican party right there in his home state of ohio. can that happen? is that possible? >> of course it's possible. >> it is likely? >> what he's focused on right now is the here and now.
3:26 pm
there are really important primaries coming up in the midwest. that's always been his strategy to get the campaign to get the nomination campaign back on his home turf and that's where it is and that's where we expect to do well. his message and his platform of jobs, economic growth, balancing the budget, getting america moving again together is starting to resonate. >> one day at a time. okay, mr. duffy, thank you very much. good luck to you and your candidate. >> thank you so much for having me. >> one state won by ted cruz. will others follow? right now the ap says that senator cruz is ahead of donald trump in maine. results are still very, very early. can maine set the stage for what's to come? coming up a professor from colby college is here to break it down for us and what this night means. customers ask if all vitamins are the same. i tell them the difference is quality. gnc formulas exceed the highest standards.

it is the bottom of the hour. time for the top of the news from america's election headquarters. we're waiting from four states caucuses and a primary in louisiana as voters choose their party's candidate. the associated press declaring ted cruz has won the kansas republican caucuses. giving his campaign a possible shot of momentum against the donald trump tide. >> mr. trump and senator marco rubio are waging a showdown in florida. ahead of that state's take all contest on march 15th. for senator rubio it is a turf war as he tries to hold his home state as mr. trump leads in the polls as far as 15% and 18%. john roberts is live in west palm beach with the very latest about this contest. hey, john. >> reporter: good evening to you from the trump international golf club where he is hoping to make a victory speech. when it comes to the florida

battle and that will come up on march 15th rubio campaign is playing down the importance of his state suggesting if marco rubio were to lose he'll stay in the race. rubio saying on the campaign trail if necessary he'll get into his pickup truck and drive across the country to pick up votes and delegates. not only is rubio facing donald trump he's facing ted cruz who is now making a late play for florida opening up ten offices here, trying to take away some of the votes that rubio might be getting. as donald trump continues to hammer rubio on the campaign trail ted cruz suggests if he doesn't win his home state he needs to bow out. >> little marco rubio, a total disaster. he's a disaster. he's a nasty guy, saying nasty things and, you know, we hit him hard. we hit him hard. little nasty guy. >> florida is obviously the home state to one of my competitors,

rub. he's a favorite son. donald trump is formidable every where. i would note that any candidate who can't win his own state, that's a real problem. >> reporter: you know, ted cruz drove that point home on wednesday when he said after winning texas had i not won my home state i would probably need bow out. the pressure will be on marco rubio. >> john, how is the senator rubio beating back these attacks by trump? >> reporter: he hasn't been hitting ted cruz too much lately. he did that a few debates ago. but he goes after donald trump and goes after him on a couple of months. he says he doesn't have the temperament to be president. also suggesting that trump is not a real conservative and he can't lead the republican party. listen. >> conservatism is now how loud you can be, how offensive you can be, how many bad words can you say, how many ridiculous things can you say on television. that's not conservatism. conservatism is ad hearing to the constitution of the united

states. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: as you pointed out at the beginning of this, eric, marco rubio is way behind donald trump. trump is ahead by some 19 point. rubio has won tough races in the state of florida before. he was way, way behind charlie crist and won that senate race. he said i've done it before. i can do it again. we'll find out in 11 days. >> certainly builds a beautiful golf course. >> reporter: he does. >> see you later. the republican presidential caucuses in maine are wrapping up in a bit. tomorrow is the democrats turn. but with 22 republican delegates up for grabs tonight there is a bit of unusual hitch. if a candidate receives 50%, the state is winner take all. what does it mean for this race? dan shay is a professor at colby college. he's also a government professor at colby.
3:35 pm
the numbers are really early, it's likely going to change. but they put ted cruz at 48%, just two points shy of that magic 50. do you think it will be a dogfight tonight? >> well, yeah, i think it's going to be a tough battle. i suspect that trump will probably win in tend. some of the forces that have propelled him to victory in other states are here in maine as well. it's an interesting caucus. it's not a traditional caucus in that voters can come and cast a ballot and leave. they don't have to stay for the entire three hours. it's in secret. it's a secret ballot. which should help probably trump. more of a primary than other caucuses. i think it will be close but in the end trump will probably win. i'll say this. i'll be very surprised if he crosses that 50% threshold. >> why is that? he got the endorsement of paula paige who is very much a trumpian in a ay, your unusual
3:36 pm
governor and he was out there today, governor paige there he is in portland on thursday when trump had that long press conference saying trump is a true blue american. paige was touting his candidate. how much does that help or could it backfire? >> i don't think it will help very much. voters have pretty much made up their mine. i got to tell you it's a rather recurrent reminders that donald trump has a style of politics that's similar to his style, try to be diplomatic about this. i don't think that will add a lot of votes in the trump column. it's been a tough six years for a lot of mainers on both sides of the aisle. governor paige is very strong, very aggressive, has a particular style that goes over well with some voters but not sure it will attract stroerts trump. >> we saw what happened in
3:37 pm
alaska where sarah palin endorsed donald trump and ted cruz took that state. we'll know the results in a couple of hours. tomorrow is the democrats turn. you're up in bernie sanders neighborhood. he's been leading in the polls so far. do you think senator sanders could take your state? >> yeah. the caucus goers tomorrow will be a progressive lot to be sure. but secretary clinton has a strong operation here in the state. she's got some strong endorsements. i think sanders will probably win. but remember that's proportional distribution. it won't matter as much as winner take all possibility on the republican side. i think sanders will have bragging rights. you know a win is a win. but it will be close. >> finally what do you think will happen in november? we don't know who the nominees basically will be. how will maine go? we used to say as maine goes so does the nation >> used to be a bellwether state. i don't know who can guess this time around.
3:38 pm
everything i told my students has been essentially wrong so i'm not going get out there on that one. >> unbelievable. a professor who admits sometimes he can be chronic. dan shea, thank you so much. we'll see if that ted cruz lead holds or as you predicted donald trump wins it out. polls close in about 40 minutes from now. we'll get back on that when the results come on in. >> very little traditional items in this year's campaign. coming up, speaking of which, mitt romney floating the yafd brokered convention as a way to keep donald trump out of the white house. is that really the best way for the establishment to dump trump? here's marco rubio.

floating the idea of a brokered convention as a way to keep mr. trump out of the white house. well mitch mcconnell is not laying out a game plan where republicans would break with donald trump but paul ryan said he would defend the republican brand. will it succeed or back fire? we have a former national campaign manager for michael dukakis and a fox news contributor. you know the criticisms. lot of them from within the party. it will be destroyed. it's the end of the war. we see open warfare and civil war. what do you think will happen? >> i don't think there's going brokered convention. the problems republicans are facing right now is that their delegate selection system allowed for proportional representation at the very beginning bath they've now moved post-super tuesday to winner take all states. for instance folks were talking earlier about florida where
3:44 pm
trump is ahead by 17 points. it doesn't matter if rubio comes in a narrow second. if trump wins florida he gets, i don't know, 99 delegates. it's a winner take all state right and left coming up. so to try to stop trump you got to stop him from collecting delegates in a system that is kind of designed to allow a front-runner at this point to roll up his sleeve so he can get the nomination. it's a tough one. >> the party bosses, they set up the system. now they are going to have fits. look what trump tweet this afternoon. he said i have brought millions of people into the republican party while the democrats are going down. establishment wants to kill this movement. here's what he said in florida earlier today. >> i'm telling you, we have something going. this whole thing that we're doing is so special. we are really, they are railing against us. they have never seen the establishment. it's a disaster.

the republican establishment they don't know what they are doing. >> how does the establishment then put their arms around him potentially at the convention? >> very difficult. it's very difficult. look, the democrats went through this in 1972 before you were alive but they had a convention in which, you know, very few elected officials, very few senators, very few governors, labor which was at that point in time still a very, very strong voting bloc, they weren't there either. and the party actually went through a self-examination and that's why we have these super delegates now who come to convention without having to run. the republicans didn't do a similar move. >> i was alive, thank you. it was george mcgovern. look how well he did. it was a great -- >> terrible. >> that backfired. >> the republican problem right
3:46 pm
now is, you know, you don't want to go out there and insult half your base. all right. so if trump is polling 49% among the republican hard core base not in the general election but among the base the problem for the republican party is that they need that base in a general election. it's just not enough. and he's putting them in an awkward position. >> also barry goldwater back in '64. so at the end of the day you think trump pulls this out? >> he could pull out the nomination because he's now got somebody else to run against not just the media and megyn but run against the republican establishment. i want may very well work to get him enough delegates. demagogues aren't good for democracy. what's happening to the republican party is good for partisan democrats and i'm a democrat but i'm even more fundamentally a believer in democracy and i think it's very unfortunate when one party
