2:00 pm
it's going to pay off in the future. if we all start saving a little more today, we'll all be better prepared tomorrow. prudential. bring your challenges. hello, everyone, it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." fresh off a big weekend for the democratic contenders, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will join bret baier in one hour from now for a special democratic town hall. it comes on the heels of their fiery debate last night in flint, michigan, where sanders turned up the heat on clinton and things got intense. take a look. >> i voted to save the auto industry. he voted against the money that ended up saving the auto
2:01 pm
industry. >> whoa! >> i think that is a pretty big difference. >> well, if you're talking about the wall street bailout, where some of your friends destroyed this economy. >> you know. >> excuse me, i'm talking. >> i have said, and i will say again. i'll be happy to release everything i have as long as everyone else does too. >> here it is, there ain't nothing. i don't give speeches for wall street for hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> when asked about her e-mail controversy last night, she criticized donald twrump, proving once again her sites are on the general election. >> the republican front-runner says he's going to talk about your e-mails every single day if he's the nominee and out on the campaign trail. if you're the nominee how are you going to take him on. >> the last time i checked, as of last night, donald trump had received 3.6 million votes, which is a good number. and there's only one candidate
2:02 pm
in either party who has more votes than him, and that's me. >> bret baier joins us from detroit, with a preview of the big clinton versus sanders showdown tonight. there's been several debates so far, both republican and democratic. there's been several town halls that the democrats have held, this is the first one on fox news. what sort of different things might viewers find out tonight that they haven't heard so far from them. >> we're excited to have both of them first of all, it's a big deal here on fox news channel. what they're going to hear are questions that haven't been asked before. as we did with the republican debate on thursday, trying to ask things in different ways and topics that have not been brought up on these town halls or debates. coming off of the debate as you played some of those fiery exchanges. this is a different format, it is great to have both a debate and a town hall, to be able to get into the weeds a little
2:03 pm
more. let people here in the audience ask questions as well. it will be a good mix between me and the people on the floor behind me. >> i know the answer to this already, i think our viewers need to hear it right from you. great journalist that you are. was there anything that was agreed to being off limits? >> no. there is absolutely no stipulations, no questions were off the table. i'm allowed to actually ask as many questions as i want to within the time constraints. i want to balance it out obviously with the audience here who desperately want to ask the audience two questions. it's a mix of undecided democratic voters, there's some independents in here. remember, michigan is an open primary tomorrow. you have a few people in this crowd who are deciding between
2:04 pm
donald trump and bernie sanders. there's a couple deciding between marco rubio and hillary clinton, and there are supporters of sanders and supporters of clinton who haven't made up their mind. there's a great mix, there are no stipulations on the type of questions, how many questions i can follow up, i can interrupt, but i plan to be respectful, but forceful. >> juan williams. >> bret last night bernie sanders made quite a comment about, if you're white, you don't know what it's like to be poor. i thought, i wonder if he has something to say to bret baier tomorrow to try to clean this up. >> tomorrow? we're talking about in an hour. >> no, no, no, when i was watching yesterday on sunday. >> oh, sorry, didn't hear that. >> i listened, there's going to be some things from the debate that we will follow up on. and there's plenty of follow-up, things that came out of that that are newsworthy.
2:05 pm
i think what's key to look at things in a different way. what is the newsiest thing that is going to come out about this. i think the fact that we're doing it period is newsworthy in itself, that aside, you want to get to the substance and meat of different issues that help voters decide what they're going to choose. >> kimberly gillfoyle. >> one of the first things that comes to mind if i have the opportunity to question hillary clinton would be about the e-mails, her server, and about the grant of immunitity to brian pagliano. do you think that subject might come up tonight? >> it may. it very well may, i don't want to lay out all of the blueprint
2:06 pm
here, but i bet that would come up. she was asked one question as you played there. there will be a variety of questions on a host of policy issues. i don't want to lay them all out here for the five, they watch the five. >> they're probably watching right now. >> before we have brian ask you a question, i want to mention this is breaking news that michael bloomberg, the former mayor of new york city has said he will not run for president. so that is just breaking news, and i guess it would have been more news if he said he is going to run. he's not going to run as expected. we're going to have brian ask you the last question. >> that was my question, i'll pass. >> we only -- i love what the format is going to be, you're only going to take five or six minutes up top one on one.
2:07 pm
then it's up to the audience where you can step up. >> they were fine, campaigns have been great to work with. they've been -- a give and take as far as. they like the setups, the format, i think they're comfortable in this town hall format. it allows them to answer things longer than the one minute, the bell ringing without that happening. and so no restrictions have some great questions. that they'll be asking as many of them as we can fit in. >> one last question for you. we opened with a sound bite from hillary clinton last night, talking about the auto bailout and the tit for tat that she and bernie sanders were having last night. hillary clinton had that wrong last night, i imagine in michigan, that's probably an important point to bring up?
2:08 pm
>> it is, and, you know, this is one of the troubles of running for president from the senate you have to talk about some votes that are pretty convoluted when you get down to the weeds. voting for cloture and to explain that in a sound bite is a little difficult. thank you so much, bret, we're all going to be watching. i'm going to run upstairs and watch, because i don't want to miss it. >> i think you should put your sensible shoes on. >> i do have sensible shoes because i try to walk home. every time i put them on around kimberly, i'm terribly embarrassed. you get the same feeling? >> my shoes i commit to in the morning, i come in here fully dressed. i've seen eric come in, you wear something totally different. >> can i comment on something
2:09 pm
bret said that i found was interesting? there were groups, because it's an open primary meeting. you can cross lines. there were the correlation was bernie sand irs and donald trump, they're trying to figure that out. hillary clinton and marco rubio, the same thing that's going on on the right is going on on the left. very fascinating. >> it's like algebra. >> let's be honest, michigan is not going to believe close. this is a layup for hillary clinton. if she's ever going to do a town hall, the nomination is not in the balance, and the state is not up for grabs. >> it's interesting because it's on fox, a lot of our viewers, they want to watch special report. they haven't seen a democratic town hall on this network. a lot more people will be exposed to bernie sanders and hillary clinton than ever before. >> it's not the case that just republicans watch fox, i can
2:10 pm
tell you that. >> i wouldn't suggest -- >> you know what's interesting to me, when you look at this past weekend, bernie sanders had a pretty good weekend. i think he won three of the four contests. he's the one he lost, was the one with the big share of delegates, louisiana, overall, now you're looking at sanders having won 8 of 19. he's nowhere near winning michigan as you were pointing out. and nowhere near having enough delegates to pose a significant challenge, even as we approach some of these states up north, where he thinks he has a better chance because there are fewer african-american voters. in a state like michigan, there are african-american voters and tremendous organizing by the unions, especially. >> earlier today michael moore tweeted that in flint michigan there's been 84 years of democratic rule or something like that, one of the big arguments last night was the tragic situation with the water in flint, michigan. michael moore is saying to
2:11 pm
people, like wake up, this wasn't necessarily a republican problem, this is a local governance problem. >> how can it be? because there's a republican governor? this is a city and local issue that they -- and by the way, there have been 40 or so years of democrats running detroit and flint michigan, they made the decision to change the water supply from x to y without testing the water and that was done at a local level. sure, the governor had to sign off on it. >> so did obama's epa. >> the epa, local epa, it's state epa and a federal epa. >> you're so guilty, you're rushing to try to escape responsibility. >> is this obama's problem? >> oh, my god. >> obama? >> why stop at governor. >> the governor signed the deal. the governor was constructing the whole deal to try to lower the cost of water supplies to flint. >> my point was that -- >> no, because he doesn't understand shared
2:12 pm
responsibility. >> on the state level it's republican -- >> you're being honest about it. >> no, juan. >> you know what would be better, let's talk about schools which came up last night. both candidates were asked, what did you do about improving the quality of education. hillary clinton couldn't answer the question, because she refused to move away from the nea and aft. there's an issue where i think democrats have some culpability. >> when you bring up schools and drop kick it. to say how about some shared responsibility. at the local level it's democrat, and higher up its president obama and his epa. >> local municipality and local decision. forget the federal level. why don't you apply the same to the education. >> it's my check the governor
2:13 pm
and the entire governor's administration -- they were having trouble with e-mails. they admitted they had some responsibility here, i don't think by the way, in confession to you, i'll say this. when i hear them say, the governor has to resign. you're playing politics. let's fix this problem. >> the reason i brought that up, i thought it was interesting that michael moore said he was pointing a finger at democrats. that was great. >> be sure to watch bret's democratic town hall tonight after the five. coming up, donald trump and ted cruz score big super saturday victories. is this now a two man race? this just got interesting. so why pause to take a pill? and why stop to find a bathroom?

but i only had a salad. it was a buffalo chicken salad. salad.
2:16 pm
2:17 pm
it was a super saturday for both donald trump and ted cruz. trump winning louisiana and kentucky. kansas and maine with the latest wins under their belt. trump is calling on marco rubio to drop out.
2:18 pm
>> i think marco rubio had a very bad night, i would call for him to drop out of the race. it's time for him to drop out of the race. i really think so. would i love to take on ted one on one, it's so much fun. ted can't win new york, new jersey, pennsylvania or california. i want ted one on one. >> cruz suggests his victory shows the race for the nomination is a two-man race. >> if you want to beat donald trump, and i don't think he's the right nominee to go up against hillary clinton. if you want to beat him, have you to beat him at the ballot box. >> what do you say? >> can i do the numbers quickly. i said it should have happened opinion if you want to unite behind donald trump. it should have happened before super tuesday, you're late in the game. tomorrow and one more week, and after that, if trump wins ohio and florida, he's the only one
2:19 pm
who has a patent. if he doesn't win one or both of them. it looks like it's going to a brokered -- >> you don't need common core math -- >> if you're in it for yourself, you're not going to take a knee and say, all right, it's all you. people aren't going to concede that yet. when you look at it, you cannot deny results from this weekend, the only other person who has a possible past is ted. as donald said, he's like, i want ted one on one, he asked me if i want ted one on one. >> i'm doing the math again here, i don't know why donald trump is saying, good rubio out. it seems to me he may want them to stay in, because that ensures -- rubio doesn't win florida. and ted probably won't win ohio, he's going to have the most delegate states in votes. >> think like you're running the campaign for donald trump.
2:20 pm
the key is first florida. what you want to do is win easily, that means get rubio out. he does not see cruz as a threat in florida. he sees rubio, rubio being the senator from florida. having been part of the state legislature. there's the potential for a jeb bush endorsement that could play one way or the other, i don't know. >> he can never get there now. even if he wins florida, he can't get there any more. >> my point to you was, trump doesn't want to risk -- he wants to win florida and that makes it easier for him. >> can we talk about ted cruz making a play in florida. he's going to spend a lot of money in florida, if he wants to do this one on one, maybe he doesn't want that to happen. >> i don't think that if -- i don't think trump is serious about wanting marco rubio to drop out. if he were, i don't think he would have said that publicly. i think he would have worked something behind the scenes to make that happen.
2:21 pm
for ted cruz. he's overperformed his numbers in all of these contests. what he didn't say is while trump won those two states, cruz came closer than anyone thought he would. it's a pattern that's been the case. >> trump is on the hook to win florida big. don't forget, john kasich, we were just talking about michigan earlier, i'm not saying he's going to win florida, he could come in second in michigan, he could -- he had a rally with -- if we're caring about endorsements. arnold schwarzenegger rally in ohio. it's this big high poured event. rubio had this great day on sunday? puerto rico. i would say that ted cruz is making these late plays because one of the things you saw in the exit polls is late deciders went for ted cruz. after that fox debate. >> what you end up happening is, the -- let's put it, let's call
2:22 pm
it -- the establishment class has to make a decision. do they not want donald trump so much, they're going to have to get behind ted cruz to make sure donald trump is the one. >> i thought lindsey graham was perfect for that. he does into the like cruz, but he dislikes trump more. what's interesting, it's going to be a last stand for marco rubio. he's picked up six point notice last poll i saw, the most important thing is, he's going to come on my radio show tomorrow. here's the other thing that's important, he's not going anywhere after florida, if he can get florida and 99 delegates, kasich takes ohio, it is winner tab all. you stop trump -- this is the add toot, not brokered but contested. if you keep from 1200, it's playing by the rules. >> then what happens. let's say donald trump gets 59 delegates? >> if that's that close, it should be trumps. >> the rule says no.
2:23 pm
>> the minute he gets anywhere, 35, 40 north of that, you know, is it going to be impossible for what you call the republican establishment, let me tell you, right now, they're pouring serious money into advertising -- >> can i tell you -- >> for cruz to stop. >> the most important thing is, if donald trump doesn't win ohio and florida, there's a very good chance this thing goes to a contested convention. trump's people better be getting with the rnc, there's a rules committee will play everything at the convention. they are going to maybe the rules prior to the convention that are going to apply at the convention. every one of them better be represented, know what they're getting into now. >> i think it's worth saying, marco rubio "think the number was 5 to 1 they're going in favor of him. if he hadn't already decided on trump you voted on rubio, rubio was winning at least that
2:24 pm
section of voters in florida. >> i guess we're going to talk more about this the next block? >> i guess. >> a warning from rush limbaugh about what would happen if the reason establishment uses a broker to derail donald trump. pet moments are beautiful,

one day a rider made a decision. the decision to ride on and save money. he decided to save money by switching his motorcycle insurance to geico. there's no shame in saving money. ride on, ride proud. geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. there's lots of talk about the potential for a brokered convention. should none of the delegates win a majority to clinch the nomination. this as the so-called stop trump forces are reportedly pouring millions of dollars into attack ads airing in big states, voting
2:29 pm
a week from tomorrow. particularly florida. john kasich sees a contested convention in a positive light. >> no one's going to have the numbers. i would have to win 68% of the remaining contests. marco would have to win 64, ten would have to win 60. donald trump is going to fall short. if he doesn't have the right numbers, we're in a multiballot convention. what's the idea about that, except it's exciting. >> a lot of people loving that man right now. >> ted cruz suggests a different strategy for beating the gop front-runner. >> any time you hear people talking about a brokered convention. i think that's the fevered talk of the washington establishment. >> if a bunch of deal makers try to step in and steal the domination, i think we will have a manifest uprising. >> apparently senator cruz is not feeling well, i know marco
2:30 pm
rubio is very sick the other night at the debate, you could hair it in his voice. >> you have a comment? >> no, kasich is great, you're right, people like him now. his math is not spot on. i'll tell you right now, there's a small chance ted cruz could find a nomination, there's a medium to larger chance donald trump will. ohio and florida depending where they go. you know what's a problem? mitt romney came out and said, not trump. anyone but trump. they're basically saying, get to a brokered convention, we'll have you contested. it's the same thing. if the first ballot, no one has the 1237 and the first ballot doesn't get someone to 1237 you have to negotiate, contest it. this is exactly what people don't want. the american people are voting for donald trump and ted cruz, because they're tired of brokered deals in washington.
2:31 pm
>> washington is a brokered convention every day about. >> these are a coronation, we keep on debate every time we go to the convention, why do we go? it's just a big show. now we have a reason to go, these are the rules. people complaining we outhit the other team. it's tough. >> how would you outscore everyone, then you should win. >> not if there's a this remember hold. not if you have to get to a this remember hold. the rules say get to the threshold. >> you're right they can bring in mitt romney, a night in shining armor and say, this is going to be our candidate. >> can you imagine what the people who voted all the 40 some -- 2% as of right now,% of the gop voted. or if he had ted cruz in. 70% of the voters voted for ted cruz or donald trump? they'll go crazy. >> you know what, gee, i think the republican party is having a civil war. i think that's what's going on right now, even before the
2:32 pm
convention. as brian was pointing out. those are the rules, you have delegates who are locked in on the first vote, that's where they're committed. the rule is, once that happens, you're free, and can you start to look around, and you talk about the establishment. remember, they see trump as a threat to the republican brand. >> and ted cruz. >> yeah. >> they like cruz. >> he used to be the guy they were most worried about. >> if it goes to a contested convention and all the horse trading goes on. do you think they're going to pick ted cruz as their guy? >> no, no. >> some people like the idea of trump more than cruz, they can't deal with cruz. what i'm telling you is, when they get into this back and forth, they fear that trump right now would damage the republican brand -- >> boys -- >> out of control. >> freeze yourselves for a second. dana i'm going to get you in. >> i was just thinking that the world is not going to fall apart if there's a contested
2:33 pm
convention. it's not idea. but there are rules and it is set up this way, in case it happens on either side. so it would be new, and unusual. it's never happened in my lifetime, i don't know what it would look like. why do we have to go and spend all this money for a bunch of campaign -- >> it's a lot of fun. >> if there was a plilt blender and you could put knees four candidates into a blender and mix them up and spit one out, that would be great. >> kasich had a great debate. >> judging by donald trump's books, he is. he should be looking ahead, what am i going to take to get over 1200. cut the deal, go in and cut the deal and get the 1200. >> can i tell you something too? the whole point 1, they try to do this, and do in donald trump, shut it down and have this contested and brokered convention. it's going to be very much what everyone was going against. deals that are cut in
2:34 pm
washington, now they're doing it, and this is exactly what the messaging has been. which has resonated well across the country. i don't think people are going to take to it too kindly. conservative commentator, roll it, baby. rush limbaugh made a dire prediction on what might happen if the gop tries to snatch the nomination away from trump. >> if they can't stop trump in the primary process, they will make an effort to stop him at the convention. >> what would happen -- >> if that happens, there's a walkout. you have utter chaos. >> i will agree with rush and add in ted cruz to that. they're getting 70% of the gop vote. if one of those two aren't the nominee that comes out of a contested convention, all hell will break loose, there's no credibility left. >> both of them could come out the winner in a contested convention as well. >> of course.
2:35 pm
>> we don't know what's going to happen. >> i said it before, the reason why donald trump and ted cruz are resonating. everyone sees it as a brokered convention. >> if you what you guys consider to be the brokered establishment. you're interested in maintaining the senate, the house, and state votes. if you see trump at the top of the ticket as a drag that would condemn the party, you're thinking, y looking out for the best -- >> they want donald trump, he's had an answer to every critic, every step of the way. maybe we saw the beginning of super tuesday, that was the beginning of the move to the middle, the beginning of the solicitation of paul ryan, maybe there is another card to play. >> also the whole pint is, because of the record turnout, so many people getting involved and participating in this, it's increasing. they wanted to grow the republican party to survive and move forward. and attract minorities and other voters that were always just like in the house of the
2:36 pm
democrats and now perhaps move them over here. >> perhaps. >> not if you have dropoff so extensively on the other side. it's a mess, i'm not -- there's no doubt about it, it's not that easy to grow the party in that way. >> we'll see what happens. very exciting. that's why we're going to be working one million hours, we'll see what the dark knight cruz does. gives gotham some love. up next, remembering nancy reagan, who passed aware yesterday. our tribute to the wife of our 40th president when the five returns. we asked a group of young people when they thought they should start saving for retirement. then we asked some older people when they actually did start saving. this gap between when we should start saving and when we actually do is one of the reasons why too many of us aren't prepared for retirement. just start as early as you can. it's going to pay off in the future. if we all start saving a little more today,

of former first lady nancy reagan. she passed away at the age of 94. she will lie in repose at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi california. she'll be buried next to her husband on friday. this morning, ron reagan reflected on the influential role his mom played in his life and his father's presidency. >> she loved her husband more than anything in the world. i think you can make the case that the ronald reagan that we all came to know as president would not have existed without nancy reagan. i think she knew how to love somebody, that would be -- you could do a lot worse than that in life. that's what i think of, when i think of my mother, i think of her relationship with her husband. >> 52 years of marriage. ronald reagan and nancy reagan,
2:42 pm
and dana, you've been in the white house, you know how these relationships work between a husband who's in a position of power like that, and a wife. how do you look back on nancy reagan? >> very fondly. and one of the first things i thought of was that -- just a little bit of a sense of relief that they were reunited. there was such a strong love. she in her own right had a big impact in my life. i got a chance to tell her that. her just say no to drugs campaign, i was 8 years old or something when that started. but it had a big impact on me. that ad was part of her doing, this is an egg frying in a pan, this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs. it spoke to me. and i never tried drugs. without her doing that, i mean, my life could have turned out differently as a lot of other people. some people think it wasn't a great program. for me, it was wonderful.
2:43 pm
i always admired their relationship so much, it wasn't a true partnership. it wasn't just a woman standing by her man. they relied on each other. they didn't like being apart. in my own relationship, what would be one way to make sure my husband knows i love him as much as she loved him, that was a great role model for me growing up. i used to think my grandparents on the ranch had a similar relationship. she will be very much missed by everybody. >> the new york times once described her as changing the role of first lady much more from the advocate on the outside than the inside. kimberly, i think a lot of people remember her as jet streamly stylish. she had a career as a movie actress, people were critical about the fact that she would look at him with an admiring glance.

> peyton manning has announced his retirement. this story an emotional press conference earlier today. he reflected on his career, including a conversation he had with johnny unidas. >> he told me, peyton, you stay at it, i'm pulling for you. well, i have stayed at it. i've stayed at it for 18 years. there's just something about 18 years, 18 is a good number and today i've retired from pro football. i fought a good fight, i finished my football race. and after 18 years it's time. god bless all of you, and god

bless football. >> that was one of the best speeches that really personies his entire career. he was all about preparation. more than talent. he was about preparing. he covered teammates, cities, college, louisiana, indianapolis, tennessee and denver. he talked about opponents, he quoted the bible. it wasn't gratuitous. never complimenting himself once except to point the finger at himself for maybe not good enough, except for hard work. that's the one thing you can take from this guy. you watch these guys play on sunday. you can't understand their talent. it's another level. you did reach an extremely high level in sports. this guy had in perspective, you could learn a lot from him. >> so peyton manning delivered his retirement speech the way he delivered a game and his career. as you point out, prepared. in control, check down the defense and deliver a perfect spiral, a perfect touch. he struck the right tone today. great job.
