[shouting] >> the salt lake city rally would go on as planned and it did indoors while disrupters continued outside. >> well, fox news reporter garrett tenney is live from washington, d.c. with the very latest. good morning, garrett. >> good morning, y'all, police in riot gear becoming a familiar sight at donald trump's rallies and we saw that again last night at salt lake city. thousands of supporters showed up to hear him speak at the event center. several hundred protesters showed up across the street as well. once the arena showed up, the disappointed trump supporters were left outside with the protesters. while the police tried to keep the two sides apart, that only lasted so long. there was plenty of shoving and shouting.

police say a few bottles and rocks were thrown. but there wasn't the kind of violent breakouts that we saw in chicago. at one point, the protesters did try to forcep; their way inside, rushing and taking down a security tent in the process. no arrests were made. inside, trump told the crowd of supporters their freedom of speech needed to be protected. and pushed back on criticisms that he needed to tone down his rhetoric and act more presidential. >> they say well, maybe you will start acting more presidential. i said what's wrong with the way i'm doing it right now in n. all fairness. if you are too presidential you will lose. we don't want to lose. we are people who know how to close the deal. >> closing the deal in utah got a little harder yesterday though when former presidential candidate mitt romney said he was voting for texas senator ted cruz in the state's caucuses on tuesday. trump's real goal is to keep cruz from getting more thanó8p @ 50% of the vote in the

belive state more than that and the winner takes all of the 40 dels in the belive state. >> they are getting real intense. i like protests, of course they have a constitutional right to protest. this isn't a protest if you are triking it stop somebody else from speaking is something different. >> shutting down somebody else's free speech is not the way to go about things. if you don't like someone, what someone is saying, then come back and argue with them and give your point to refute what they are0r saying. don't try to shut somebody's first amendment right down? >> is it working? after the protests in chicago erupted they were shouting we won. we shot trump. we stopped trump. >> we shut him down. >> you are not hearing to your argument a counter argue: trump is saying we need to build a wall and deport illegals in this country. make a counterpart. people disagree, say so.

>> no, you know, it's hard to -- it's hard to explain, you know, when you see you have loved ones in the cemetery and you are going to visit them in the cemetery and then you hear people complaining about being separated by ah4 border because they crossed it illegal and we just want to enforce our rules. what's wrong with that? >> what is wrong with that? and i wonder, you have noticed that most of the people supporting i will locally immigration in this country aren't touched by it personally? they are not competing for jobs with people coming here illegally. they don't have loved ones murdered by criminals who came here illegally. you have noticed that? >> oh, yeah. i notice that all the time. that's what they depend on, not caring. so they can always say they are against it. that's why i always ask them. what would you do if someone in your family was murdered by illegal alien? what would you expect of someone running for president to do when they found out that americans are being murdered by illegals.

donald trump in the hopes this goes to a contested convention. that's what he wants. that's why you saw him campaign with john kasich in ohio. he was best position to do defeat donald trump in ohio. he sees the same thing in utah that ted cruz is best positioned to deny votes from donald trump in utah. that's what he is trying to do here. there is criticism that the anti-trump efforts need to unite behind one candidate to try to deny donald trump the u majority vote outright. >> we were talking about this earlier on the show it's as if the g.o.p. establishment is saying i know, there are these pesky little people out there called voters. >> right. >> that have a say in all of this. we want to kind of alter the system a little bit. let's take this behind the )jjip &c @&c@ >> it won't work if donald trump gets the necessary delegates. the 1237 delegates. if he reaches that threshold, i think it will be virtually impossible for republicans to then say no, you don't deserve the nomination, we're going to have a condition tested convention. i do think, however, if he doesn't get the requisite

delegates that they do have grounds for perhaps contesting it at the convention. if he doesn't get the necessary delegates on the first ballot. but it locks like he is better positioned now than has been before to actually get the majority of delegates. so, i wouldn't have said that a few weeks ago. after the contest last week, and we have more to go on tuesday, i think he is on his way. >> what about the fact that mitt romney is not endorsing him? >> well, come on is that a little wimpy. >> it's a thinly veiled showing that while i like new utah but when the convention comes out and people like me enough maybe me mitt romney will be the game. it's a sad game they are doing. >> picking two people to go to the prom. >> don't do that. >> lindsey graham talking that? cruz was so pathetic well i váhing but i kind of support him. lindsey graham. >> underscores the really

difficult position that republicans are in right now. either way you game this out, whatever way you game it out the options don't look good. >> we as a party look great such enthusiasm behind donald trump. >> what does it mean to be a republican anymore? mitt romney's quote is today there is a contest between trumpism and republicanism. whats to it even mean to be a republican today? >> and i think that's the big question here. just to put this race in progressive, you have someone like senator lindsey graham who literally said the choice between trump and ted cruz is being shot or poisoned. he has come out to support ted cruz. that gives a glimpse into the dynamics of this election cycle. what does the republican party represent? in some respects this race right now sort of a fight for the heart and soul of the republican party bowers you have got the candidates so split and the different fields or lanes of republicanism where they are. you have got someone like john kasich very much represents that traditional establishment lane. you have got someone like

ted cruz who is your condition constitutional conservative. limited government. and then you have someone lick donald trump who really represents this populist wing of the republican party. it's going to be very interesting to see this play out and what that means to the republican party. >> money before we wrap this up, $63 million has been spent on anti-trump ads. 20 million spent in florida that didn't help senator rubio at all. is the money going to help here in the end? >> it hasn't before. i don't think it's going to help in the republican primary where i do think it might make a difference is when we get to the general election. and we have already seen democrats start to pivot to that general election. >> i agree it won't help in the primary but i think it will not help in the general either. this is getting anything negative about trump out there like it did for obama versus hillary in 2008. when it comes to november these hits are going to be old news. it's only going to be good for trump. positive from here on out. >> any time he is on television it will go up. >> right. >> great discussion this morning. anna over to headline.

more public. i think we saw it in the flint, michigan situation where lead levels were collected and not given to the public. there is a real move afoot that says the 15 parts per billion which is the e.p.a. standard of lead in water is not necessarily safe enough. and there should be household action level, so that people know more often what is the lead in water in their municipality, in their school, in their child care. and we need better disclosure for sure. because lead is a very dangerous neurotoxin for which there is7b no -- it has irreversible effects on children. >> you don't want them to be developmentally delayed, being irreversible. not a good thing. the e.p.a. estimates that 90,000 public schools and 500,000 child care centers are not regulated under safe drinking water under that act.

the infinity event center where thousands of trump)r supporters were lining up for his rally. only room inside for 1500 supporters though, leaving the rest outside with the equally passionate protesters. the yelling and chanting quicklyh-9÷ escalated and the two groups moved into the street and into each other's faces. once the pushing and shoving started, police in riot gear moved in to try to separate the crowd. some of the protesters want to do get inside though. and at one point a group tried storming their way in, boy knocking over security check point in the process. can you see how police blocketd entrance and moved the crowd back. inside the event donald trump brushed off the proforts all together saying they are simply trying to take away his freedom of speech. >> by the way, outside looks absolutely fine. we have, they said, 2500 of

came up 800 feet short of the runway, and that's when it came down hard, very hard. the victim's family breaking down in tears after arriving at the airport. looking in both the bad weather and pilot error as potential causes for that crash. >> and fly dubai, four of the victims were children. >> sad news. we'll be following that story for you and bring you the latest from the flight recorder as that develops. back to campaign trail now where protesters attempt to disrupt a trump rally in utah yesterday. indoors, but outside, the disrupters continued. >> our reporter is live from washington, d.c. now with the late now. >> reporte >> reporter: these protesters got things hour before donald trump even showed um for this rally. they had their own rally outside his event.

several hundred demonstrators gathered outside infinity event center in salt lake city to protest the republican front runner. and even took turns hitting with a donald trump pinata. the crowd then turned their s e sights on a couple thousand supporters lining up for the event. police moved them across the street. the separation didn't last long. personal space went right out the window. the two sides got right in each other's faces, screaming and chanting, pushing and shoving, until police in full riot gear were called in to separate the crowd. at one point, a group of protesters tried forcing their way inside the event by storming a security check point. you can see in the video how police were trying to block the entrance.

eventually, the officers moved the crowd back. donald trump was rushed off a protesters saying more than agitators looking to cause trouble. the republican front runner also pushed back on criticism that he needed to tone down his rhetoric. >> we know how to close the deal. >> reporter: and despite how heated things were outside, other than bottles and rock being thrown, no real violence and they made no arrests. >> no arrests, thanks, gary, however they did tear down that security don't as we saw in the video. and then as the folks were coming out, throwing even one rock is enough. rocks and bottles. >> being intolerant here. >> it's getting insane and shouldn't surprise anybody.

figured it'd be worth hearing your take on this. as a factual matter, do you think that's true, trump can never win a general against hillary? >> i don't think that's true. that's largely the argument republicans are making about the contested convention. because they think that he's going to be a terrible general election candidate against hillary. i'm not saying that that cruz or kasich -- they poll better against hillary than donald trump. kasich who's doing the worst in the delegate polls the best against hillary. and those numbers could change over months. i'm not saying he will beat hillary, but he certainly can. >> it seems like -- really, two likelihoods, either a trump/hillary race would result in a massive blowout for donald trump or redraws the map that maybe he beats her by a point or two. you think that's what could happen? >> i mean to start with, this is a path of voters with, knob

matter what trump says with an anomaly of numbers and the nevada caucuses that at a margin of, you know, 10% or something, it was an anomaly, he's doing terribly with african american and hispanic voters. will he get some? he certainly will. and he will get them. but he will need a path of white voters. look at 2012, 57.5% of the country turned out to vote in that election. that's pretty bad. so what i think is that there are new voters there for the taking. who gets them? donald trump. this is a number's game, trump can find his own voters and they're the most enthusiastic. what hillary needs to do is she needs to get republicans who loathe donald trump to not just sit home on their hands, but vote for her. donald trump -- he's an unlikable figure, donald trump is going to go after her hard. she needs to really scare people into coming and voting for her against trump. and yes, it'll inspire turnout against him, but will it be enough?

including the washington establishment. the party is obviously changing, will be a totally different party by november no matter what happens. for the good or the bad, do you think? >> definitely for the good. establishment, whatever that many morph -- >> trump is good? >> expanding the tent. reaching out to blue collar democrats in ohio, michigan, pennsylvania, it's expanding the republican opportunity all over the country. mitt romney, people like lindsey graham don't realize, many are realizing, but they still for some reason don't to want embrace it. we need to coalesce around donald trump and we know he's the best shot. >> coalesce around donald trump, my sense is washington resident is there are an awful lot of republicans in d.c. who really will never vote for donald trump. do you think that's right? >> i think that's right, and for as many people are donald trump is bringing into the party, perhaps as many are exiting. we'll see in november if donald trump is in fact the nominee. and i do think that he is on his way to securing the necessary

amount of delegates. we saw last tuesday him do better than expected, we have another race, a couple other races this tuesday and so forth. i think the path for a contested convention is actually narrowing. >> right. this may all be moved. amazing interview, chelsea clinton and having it in my view, couple of days ago, she said our campaign, my mother's campaign is affirmatively for giving obamacare subsidized federal health care to illegal aliens. >> it's mind blowing. and this is the irony of it, what is so hypocritical about hillary clinton is the fact that she's flip-flopped on so many issues. and there was a time when hillary clinton said she was adamantly against illegal immigration, and now she wants to give them free health care. that's exactly who hillary clinton is. in the sense that she has flip-flopped from gay marriage, criminal justice, immigration, i mean, name the issue, trade, and she has flip-flopped on it. >> maybe, totally true, maybe the downside of trump is all the drama that we're watching with

hi friends, good morning, 43 minutes after the hour. shocking report released this week reveals the phoenix va turned away suicidal veterans. how much worse does it have to get before something is done to help? here to weigh in is the political director for concerned americans. >> thanks for having me on this morning. >> you've lived in arizona and you've had some firsthand experience, tell us about this be most recent bomb shell report that was just released. >> well, if there weren't already enough problems, the phoenix va, a whistle blower, fellow marine who i've gotten to know. he ran a suicide clinic, one of the mental health clinics at the phoenix va. and he's been bringing forward information for the last year or so that the phoenix va mental health unit has been turning

away suicide veterans from care at the phoenix va. and unfortunately, in the past when we've seen this at other va hospitals, this has led to veterans going and unfortunately taking their own lives. it's disgusting considering the fact that the va spends upwards of $7 billion a year on mental health and they still can't get this right. >> it's unbelievable to have some of our heros who fought for our freedoms on the battlefield and they come home, go to the hospital, and they say i'm thinking about taking my life and think refuse care. it's almost not even believable. you also are really rallying for the va accountability act. it would make it easier to fire bad va employees. and there's someone at this particular hospital. the hospital chief of staff, that you are pointing your finger at this morning, why? >> this is, this is the guy who sat next to sharon hellmann, the fired phoenix va hospital director who was basically created a secret wait list at the phoenix va that they created

the environment for that to happen, and if for two years, even though they knew he was involved, he was allowed to remain in his job, the chief of staff job which is a critical job. and only now are they proposing a fire him. he could resign, retire, and get away with it. or be on paid a mrtive leave while they do another investigation. collecting a salary. and that is why we need laws like the va. which will make it a lot easier to fire employees like him. >> what's the status right now and what's the hold-up? >> well, it's passed on a bipartisan basis in the house of representatives. mitch mcconnell refused to bring it up for a full vote in the senate. we hope he does. senator isaacson and other senators are putting together a package, and we hope they move onnen this critical piece of legislation. this is clear that we need it.

penguins and 5,000 miles is a long women sw im. is that a lot that they do? >> here with answers a the animal expert and the ocean mystery, jeff corwin. nice to see you. >> you have a friend here. >> well, this is blue blue, and this is one of the great ambassadors of one of our great aquariums in connecticut. blue blue is an african penguin from south africa. >> huh. >> and what are they like. they have a lot of personality and they're very different from one another. >> i have to tell you, out of all the creatures, these are my favorite. they're so charismatic, we often see ourselves in these birds. they're moe nothing mouse. some of us are. these guys are probably more monogamous than we are. >> same partner for the life. >> for the most part. there's a little change every once in a while. they live very long lives, they can live 20 years plus in human care. and they have powerful personalities and they bond in such profound ways with their -- >> how do they distinguish the

identical penguins? >> that's a good question, tucker. a lot of it has to do with a call, each penguin at its own call. just like if you showed up at your kids school and you could hear your child, that's my kid. the same thing, when these animals show up to the beaches where they nest every year on the coast of south africa. they respond to the sound of their mate or offspring. >> can they do it on command? >> once you start displaying your breeding colors, then you may get those calls. with something that happens, that has to do with the hormones and light and photo periods, and it's that breeding time that actually causes that bond between male and female to cement. >> that's amazing, that 5,000 mile journey. >> isn't that incredible? >> come back to see this guy. does that strike you as odd? >> it didn't strike me as odd, again, they have a strong affinity to their mates. it's likely when he was rescued,

it made a connection with the person that saved that penguin in brazil. they have incredible migratory and almost natural gps abilities to navigate their way back to where they're from. for example, empire penguins can travel from many thousands of miles, and many birth species actually have their own internal gps system in their brains and in their breaks that allow them to get within feet of where will they last began. >> i wish i had that. i still get lost on the interstate. >> wish all men had that. >> you can say that. how hard would it be -- probably not allowed, how hard is it to care for a penguin? >> you know, the folks at mystic, they're experts. they're part of this breeding program, trying to save these penguins. they require incredibly complex behavior and maintenance. these animals are in a lot of trouble. tucker, less than 100 years ago, there were five million of these penguins, today, there's only 40,000 left. so they're disappearing real fast. >> why? what's happening. we like to eat what penguins

like to eat. many parts of the world, where penguins leave, human beings are competing with them for their food resources. we also like to live where they live, beaches are perfect nesting sites for penguins, awesome summer homes as well. we're competing for real estate and as we pollute the oceans and use plastics and our ocean temperatures kmang, they are paying the price. >> often think of these living in places like antarctica. so in southern parts of south america, they live in south africa? >> that's an interesting question. so there's 17 species of penguin, only few of them live in antarctica. now none of them live in the arctic, why? why do you think we don't? >> because -- well because there aren't. they're not there. >> your the expert, we're asking the questions. >> because in the arctic, we have polar bears and wolfs and other creatures.
