12:00 pm
around one candidate. on the democratic side and republican side to get the message clear. and perhaps maybe that would get people to calm down if they coalesced. right now it's obviously quite fractured. >> steve pomerantz, with us for two hours. here to talk about something else. we switched gears on and you have now spent the better part of two hours talking about what's going on. as we watched these two situations unfold, both the one in arizona we're watching and also the protest in new york where we had arrests, as well, a couple people sprayed with mace and those kinds of things. give us a sense of how things have changed after chicago, after utah, and now today as law enforcement looks at the 2016 election. >> i think that's a very good question. we have mentioned chicago a number of times. and in fairness, to the younger viewers, the law enforcement was very heavily criticized as a result of the riots. >> chicago with donald trump a couple weeks ago. >> okay. i'm starting back in '68. because there's a marked difference. in fact, that has come down in
12:01 pm
historically to be called police riots. i don't think they did that on purpose. it was the fact they were not equipped physically or buy training to handle those things. law enforcement today is much different. particularly in the big cities. and i think what you saw in new york was a reflection of that. and new york today, a reflection of that. law enforcement is prepared much better than it ever has been to deal with these things. you saw a resolution in arizona today that did not involve violence. it ended peacefully. and the rally is going to continue. so law enforcement is much better prepared to deal with that. that doesn't talk to the issue of violence around the political process and the much bigger issue than just whether law enforcement is prepared. it's how is this going to impact our country? are we going to decide this on the streets? is this the way -- elizabeth asked about whether or not trump and his campaign needs to consider these kinds of things
12:02 pm
before they schedule a rally or an event. is that what we have come to that we're now going to schedule our events around a potential for violence? >> well, trump would say so. and he pointed out that fact in his interview. in the sense that he cancelled the event in chicago, because they realized how many agitators were inside the crowd. and that is an interesting point, as we look. sheriff joe just introduced somebody. is there a way we can listen into the rally here a little bit? sheriff joe said he was introducing donald trump. as we look at the helicopter aerials, it appears it could be donald trump heading towards the stage there in arizona. >> aerials on your left-hand side there. and i believe that's he in the red hat. you have to be patient with me. i definitely don't have the best vision in the world. we watched him as he drove along the same highway closed for hours. let's take a listen now. this is donald trump in fountain hills, arizona.
12:03 pm
>> thank you, folks. thank you very much, folks. wow, what a crowd this is! thank you all very much. what a great honor. sheriff joe, i want to thank you. you have some sheriff. there's no games with your sheriff. that's for sure. and jan, thank you so much. and jeff. boy, oh, boy, we have such great support. today is so important. we have a movement going on, folks. we've got to make that movement the go forward. you have the establishment, they don't know what they're doing. they have no clue. they don't know how to win. they haven't won in a long time. they have picked the people that -- they absolutely will never win with the people they talk about. go out on tuesday and vote. i will never let you down. remember.
12:04 pm
>> audience: trump, trump, trump! >> and i want to tell you. you know so much about illegal immigration and so much has been mentioned about it and talked about it. and these politicians are all talk, no action, they're never going to do anything. they only picked it up because when i went and when i announced i'm running for president, i said, you know, this country has a big, big problem with illegal immigration. and all of a sudden, we started talking about it. and then you had lots of bad things happening. crime all over the place. and for the first time, people saw what was going on. you had the killing of kate, you the had killing of jamele. you had so many killings, so much crime. drugs pouring through the border. people are now seeing it. and you know what?
12:05 pm
we're going to build the wall, and we're going to stop it! it's going to end! [ shouting ] >> i only wish these cameras -- because there's nothing as dishonest as the media. that i can tell you. i only wish these cameras would spin around and show the kind of people that we have, the numbers of people that we have here. i just wish they would for once do it. because you know what? we have a silent majority that's no longer so silent. it's now the loud, noisy majority. and we're going to be heard! we're going to be heard.
12:06 pm
so today on drudge, one of the very big stories, where the border agents, they say they support trump, that trump is the only one running that has their backs, okay? and they can do the job. but they don't get support from the politicians. now, why? i'm self-funding my campaign. i'm putting up my own money. these guys are all -- i look at them all up and down. we started off with 17. we're down now to three. don't we love that? don't we love it? don't we love this? we lost the future of the republican party last tuesday in florida. you know that. he was the future. he was the future of the republican party. except i won florida in a landslide, because people are tired of what the politicians are doing to our country. remember that. they're tired of it. they're sick and tired of it. so we're going to make change. but it's not going to be obama change. remember obama? change.
12:07 pm
[ booing ] >> this is going to be real change. and we're going to have a border. and unless you have a border, you don't have a country, folks. you don't have a country. remember that. now, in addition -- we'll go through a list of things very quickly, because frankly, it doesn't take a long time. we're going to end common core. we're going to bring our -- we're going to bring education will be local. everybody wants it. we don't want our children educated by bureaucrats from washington, d.c. so we end common core education local. we're going to terminate obamacare. we're going to repeal it and replace it with great health care for far less money. that's going to happen! that is going to happen. we are going to protect our second amendment. our second amendment.
12:08 pm
remember, it's under siege like you've never seen before. and we are going to protect it. you know in paris, which has the toughest gun laws in the world, the world, no tougher gun laws than paris, france. tough. guess what? 130 people dead. no bullets were going in the opposite direction. it was just boom, boom, boom. same thing happened in california. 14 people radicalized people. she probably radicalized him. they went in and killed 14 people that they worked with, supposedly that they liked. it's not going to happen any more, folks. it's not going to happen. we're going to be smart, we're going to be vigilant. we're going to be the smart people. we're going to know what we're doing. we're going to be proud of our country again. our military is depleted.
12:09 pm
our military is exhausted. we don't replenish. we take, we don't replenish. we send the best equipment in the world over to wherever we're sending it. we don't even know. i don't even think we know where we're sending it. and a bullet gets fired in the air, and the people we send the equipment to, they flee. and the enemy takes over this great equipment. and they have better equipment than we do. and they use our equipment. those days are done. those days are done. we are going to rebuild our military. it's going to be bigger and better and stronger than ever. and hopefully nobody -- nobody -- and hopefully we're not going to have to use it. but i guarantee you this. nobody, and i mean nobody, is going to mess with us any more. all right? nobody. >> audience: usa, usa, usa, usa!
12:10 pm
>> i love you too. i love you. you know, i love this country. i feel so -- i have such a spot in my heart for this country. the people are so amazing. no matter where we go, we have crowds like this. this is a pretty big one. in alabama, we had 35,000 people. oklahoma, no matter where we go, we have these massive crowds. and by the way, are we winning or what? look at the numbers. man! you know, it's really -- it's really amazing. it's really -- to me, it's really amazing. we have won now i think 21 states, okay? 21. and we have won in massive, massive landslides. started with new hampshire. i wasn't supposed to win new hampshire. ted cruz, can you believe it? he wasn't born in our country,
12:11 pm
folks! he was born in canada! he's weak on immigration. he's in favor of amnesty. he shouldn't even be in the same category with the people that we're talking about. but ted cruz was supposed to win, but definitely was going to win in south carolina. so i go to new hampshire, we win in a massive landslide. we go to south carolina, where you have the evangelicals. now, 68%. but you know, lyin' ted -- we call him lyin' ted. lyin' ted. so lyin' ted comes up with the bible high, and he's going with the bible. and he puts it down, and he starts lyin'. and you know what? the evangelicals don't likeliars so we go into south carolina. that was his stronghold. that was going to be an easy victory. and trump wins it in a landslide, right? in a land slide. and then one after another, we go in, we win nevada, landslide.
12:12 pm
we win -- we did so great. and then we had a great day on tuesday. you know that. we won five! five. and then i hear cruz the other day, and he's going, i'm the only one that can stop trump! i am the only one! you ever hear this guy? i'm the only one! i beat him five times! and i said, well, wait a minute! i beat him 20 times. what's going on? lyin' ted. he's lyin' ted. and you know, i'll tell you, kasich is a nice guy. but honestly, very weak on illegal immigration. that's the end of him. certainly as far as phoenix is concerned. and as far as arizona is concerned, kasich is very, very weak. as you know. and you know, there's another thing that i don't like. he approved nafta. when you approve nafta, a lot of your businesses left. and he's in favor of tpp, and so, by the way, is ted cruz.
12:13 pm
tpp is a disaster. it's the transpacific partnership. it's a disaster, it's going to take your businesses away. it's going to decimate the automobile industry. you don't want it. you don't need it. we will make great deals. once i get into office, we will make great deals but not with massive amounts of countries. you do them one at a time, folks. one at a time. one at a time. one at a time. and if they misbehave and if they don't treat us properly, we terminate. and we put them in the shed. and then maybe they come back. so crazy. you know, i built a great company, a massive company, a fantastic company. and i filed -- i did my filings, and -- they were so unhappy with they saw. they thought maybe it's not so good. it's a phenomenal company. some of the great assets of the world. some of the great assets of the world. very little debt.
12:14 pm
very, very -- tremendous cash flow. all of these things. and i say it not in a bragging -- you know, look, i say it -- you know what, folks? bottom line, this is the kind of mentality we need in this country, at least for a while. at least for a while. we have $19 trillion in debt. $19 trillion. who knows even what a trillion is? you know, five, six, seven years ago, you never even heard the term. we have $19 trillion in debt. going to 21. they just approved a budget which is a disaster. the omnibus. they call it the omnibus budget, right? it is a total disaster. it funds obamacare. it funds syrians coming into the united states. we have no idea who they are. it funds illegal immigrants coming in and through your border, right through phoenix and right through -- right through -- it comes right through arizona. all of these things are funded with the budget that they
12:15 pm
approved. and i think it took them like 12 minutes to approve the budget. not going to happen any more, folks! not going to happen any more. so here's the story. bottom line. the bottom line. it is -- first of all, it's great to be with you. this is incredible. we expected -- and this was just set up recently. we -- and we had, by the way -- last night, i don't know if you saw. we had an unbelievable evening in salt lake city, utah. and i hope they go with us. i hope they go with us. i said, we have to stop there. we stopped, and we had an amazing evening there. but let me just tell you -- the way i finish is very simple. our country is not winning any more. our trade is a disaster. china has -- it's one of the great robberies in the history of the world. what china has done to our country. china has been rebuilt, because of the money and the jobs we have lost and the money we have
12:16 pm
given them. we have rebuilt china. and they know it. i have many friends from china. i don't have any objection to china. i think it's wonderful. i'm angry at our people, not their people. if you can get away with it. so look, we've rebuilt china. and it's not free trade. it's not anything. this is horrible, stupid trade. when you have an imbalance of $500 billion a year, folks, we've got to get smart. i've got carl icahn, the greatest negotiators in the world, the greatest business people in the world endorsed me. they say trump is the only one who knows what corporate inversion is. you look toe corporate inversions, companies -- pfizer, great company. pfizer just announced they're leaving. the great drug company. thousands of jobs. they're going to ireland. many companies, as you know, are going to mexico. carrier air conditioner, nabisco, ford. where are they going? they're going to mexico.
12:17 pm
mexico, mark my words -- mexico is a small version of china. and we better get smart, and we better get smart quickly. so you know, i tell the story. and i tell this story, and it's sort of obvious. but it relates to a lot of things. now, my wife and my daughter ivanka said to me, act presidential. act presidential. like in the last debate, i acted presidential. okay? i acted -- i didn't hit little marco and i didn't hit lyin', lyin', lyin' ted. i didn't want to hit him. i wanted to really impress my daughter and my wife and i said, all right, i'll act -- and i won the debate. you know, i've won every single debate according to the online polls? i don't know. because i know that cruz is a good debater, but he can't talk. you know, he talks -- hey, wa, hey. not the right guy. not the right guy. he's not going to be the right guy. and he's not going anywhere, so it's not going to happen. the only one that can go -- and
12:18 pm
i say we make it before the convention, by the way. a lot of nonsense. you have these stiffs like a mitt romney -- the guy is a total stiff. did he let us down? this guy is a loser! did he let us down? here's a guy, he goes up, he's so devastated. he forgot to campaign in the final month! he gave it to obama. believe me, that election -- i'm going to beat hillary so badly. but let me just tell you -- beating obama four years ago was easier than beating hillary clinton now. believe me. and mitt romney choked. pure and simple. he choked, he choked like a dog. and that's not going to happen. that doesn't happen with me. so here's the story. here's the story. we're going to tell our companies, come on back, folks. come on back. you left, we had incompetent leadership. you left. and they're not going to come back. they're going to say, we're not
12:19 pm
coming back, why should we? we're in mexico, we're all over the place. here's what we have to do. you know, jeb bush would say, he is not a conservative. i'm conservative, folks. but i'm also like smart, you know? smart. hey, look. jeb spent $48 million in new hampshire. i spent 2. i won in a landslide. he was number six. i mean, give me a break, okay? give me a break. he is not a conservative. i am a conservative. but you know, they get me on trade. because they say he's not a free trader. i'm a free trader! but it's got to be smart trade. it's got to be good for us, not bad for us, okay? and if our incompetent politicians use political hacks to negotiate trade deals, people that have no clue about money or deals that have not read the art of the deal, in all fairness, and don't intend to. it's not of interest to them. look at john kerry. look at the deal he made with iran. one of the worst deals ever negotiated.
12:20 pm
one of the worst deals ever negotiated. look, it's a disgrace, it's an embarrassment. by the way, on that deal, we should have never, ever even started until they give our prisoners back. you know that. we should have had them back years ago, and once they got back, we should have gone in and told them, oh, by the way, the $150 billion, sorry, folks. we're a debtor nation, folks. we owe $19 trillion. we don't have it, sorry, you're not getting the money. and you know what, after about two days of turmoil, we would have saved, believe me, $150 billion. okay? that deal is such an embarrassment. well, our trade deals are just like that. our trade deals -- sergeant bergdahl, five for one, right? we get bergdahl, they get five of the great killers they have coveted for a period of nine years, and they got them. and those guys are now back on the battlefield, trying to kill
12:21 pm
us all. and we got a traitor. big deal? but that's the way -- and by the way, a traitor that supposedly -- supposedly five or six young beautiful soldiers were killed, trying to find him and get him back, okay? that's our deal. that's the way we negotiate. not going to happen any more. okay? not going to happen any more. so what we're going to do is we're going to tell our wonderful businesses that deserted us, they left us. and i'm not even blaming them. they had no reason not to. because nobody talks -- do you think anybody went to carrier and said, listen, you're letting all of these people go, you're moving to mexico. please don't do it. b-b-b- here's the deal, don't do that. so they move into mexico and i would say -- i want to do it myself. i know it's not presidential. it's not presidential scla it's not presidential for the president of the united states
12:22 pm
to call up the head of carrier -- hello, this is the president. but i don't care. it's so much fun for me. i love doing it. please don't take that away. please! don't take that away from me. i love deals. >> so there you see him, a pumped up donald trump in arizona at this hour addressing thousands of his supporters who waited for a number of hours to hear him speak. this against a backdrop of anti trump protests that were in the same area this morning. and the afternoon. i'm going to bring in herman ca cain, joining us now with reaction to what we're seeing right now. and what's going on nationally with the protests, the anti trump movement and the establishments, you know -- the uproar with the establishment over his candidacy right now. welcome. it's great to have you back on the show after a long time. >> thanks, uma. happy to be with you. >> thanks for being here.
12:23 pm
so i know that mr. trump continues to draw lots of reaction across the board. what do you make of the way that he's being portrayed right now and the protests that we've been witnessing over the last few days? >> what some people don't understand is that free speech isn't somebody's right to try and silence somebody else. and that's what they're trying to do. and here's why. there are people that do not like trump's message. they don't like his style. he cannot be bought. he's not a puppet. that's why there are so many people in different factions of even the republican party that are against him. for example, the protests, that's just another layer. but i happen to believe, uma, those are not spontaneous protests. somebody, somewhere, is behind those protests in order to get people together. and many of them probably don't even know why they're protesting. they are there because they have bought into some spoon-fed
12:24 pm
rhetoric that portrays donald trump in ways that simply are not true. for example, he has been called a racist. he is not a racist. but that's what people believe, because of a statement that was taken out of context. >> well, do you think right now we are witnessing the end of the gop party as we have known it for all these years? that there's going to be a redefinition as we speak right now as the days and months continue? >> i believe so. the gop -- the republican party has been talking for years about a bigger tent. well, they got a bigger tent, uma. and now some of the party bosses, they don't like who is in the tent. they don't like who is leading the tent right now. who is donald trump. i have said that if the republican party continues to shoot itself in both feet, and in feet they don't even have yet, it will be the end of the republican party as we know it. if donald trump goes to the
12:25 pm
convention with enough delegates, 1,237, he should get the nomination. and the rest of the party should rally behind him. if they do not do that, it would be the end of the republican party as we have known it in the past. >> what do you make of these so-called secret meetings we have been hearing about all week long with party elites in the gop trying to come up with some other solution to what they see as the donald trump and ted cruz problem right now. the two insurgents of the presidential contest, now the two that lead in the delegate count? >> the secret meetings to stop trump, i think, are despicable. and they are going to turn a lot of people off about even participating in the process. but more importantly, it's turning out that these secret meetings are 'em bolding the supporters of donald trump.
12:26 pm
so it's back firing in a lot of ways. i find it hypocritical. that people who have been involved in the republican party for years, who have talked about the bigger tent that i referred to, they now want to stop trump. simply because he doesn't play by that rule, they can't control him. he might upset the apple cart. he might do things differently. you heard at the beginning of this speech that you just showed, he gave several specifics that the american people can relate to. and you have a lot of the establishment people as they call themselves. you have conservative activityists they call themselves. i don't care what they call themselves. you have too many people out there that are anti trump. when they asked him to sign a pledge. >> about that pledge, let me ask you, what do you think it will do if the other candidates refuse to sign the pledge, that many thought donald trump would not sign, but that he was forced to do along with the other guys at the start of the campaign? >> yes. so he did go ahead and sign the
12:27 pm
pledge. now they want to kick him aside. uma, it would create utter chaos in the republican party. one thing bernie sanders has said that i agree with. we are in a political revolution. but it's not bombs and bullets. it's brains and balance. and more people are using their brains and going to the ballots. that's why they're supporting outside candidates like donald trump. >> how concerned are you, though, that there is going to be a contested convention this summer? in the gop and what impact would that have on the delegates and the general public seeing the fight that's going on in the convention or possible fight if mr. trump or mr. cruz does not get enough delegates at the start of the convention as it begins and they have to go to first and second ballots and that type of thing? >> i believe that the contested conventions idea is more hype
12:28 pm
than probability. now, let's suppose it does happen. and they rewrite the rules in such a way that the leader with the most delegates doesn't get it, and somebody who maybe wasn't even in the race gets it the race. it would be the end of the republican party, as you indicated earlier as we have known it in the past. people will leave the republican party, and they're not coming back. >> you know, historians will notice back in 1980, ronald reagan in march of that year, was behind by about 25 points. and the party establishment at that time didn't know what to make of ronald reagan. and they thought he was the big outsider, and that he could not possibly carry the mantle for the republican party at that time. >> you're so right, uma. and the same thing is happening. i'm glad you brought up reagan. that's the perfect example of how the establishment resented him. the establishment tried to stop
12:29 pm
him, but the people wanted ronald reagan. and you've heard the term -- you've got reagan democrats. independents have come over. that's the same thing that's happening with donald trump. and if they try to stop him as he legitimately continues to win states and delegates, it will end the republican party. that i am pretty certain of. >> herman cain, pleasure to have you on the show. thank you so much for joining us with your insights. we really appreciate it. and i know that your radio show is doing very well. so congratulations on that, as well. >> thanks a lot, uma. it's great to be with you. >> thank you, sir. all the best. well, the republican race may be a little too crowded with trump leading the way so far. lots of competition early on means he may not be able to snag enough delegates to win the nomination outright. that's what some people are saying. next up, former house speaker, newt gingrich, explains what happens then. >> i heard about -- on thursday there was some secret meeting of
12:30 pm
republican leaders. and i looked at the list. none of them were leaders. none of them held office. none of them were important. none of them were in leadership positions. these are self-appointed publicists who got together to gripe. uh, hello geico?... yeah, i was just talking about your emergency roadside service and how it's available 24/7 and then our car overheated... what are the chances? can you send a tow truck please? uh, the location? you're not going to believe this but it's um... it's in a tree. i wish i was joking, mate, but it's literally stuck in a tree. (car horn honking) a chainsaw? no, no, all we really need is a tow truck. day or night, geico's emergency roadside service is there for you. thwith aches, chills,g. and fever, there's no such thing as a little flu. and it needs a big solution: an antiviral. so when the flu hits, call your doctor right away
12:31 pm
and up the ante with antiviral tamiflu. prescription tamiflu is an antiviral that attacks the flu virus at its source and helps stop it from spreading in the body. tamiflu is fda approved to treat the flu in people two weeks of age and older whose flu symptoms started within the last two days. before taking tamiflu, tell your doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, have serious health conditions, or take other medicines. if you develop an allergic reaction, a severe rash, or signs of unusual behavior, stop taking tamiflu and call your doctor immediately. children and adolescents in particular may be at an increased risk of seizures, confusion, or abnormal behavior. the most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting. anti-flu? go antiviral with tamiflu.
12:32 pm
12:33 pm
i love to take pictures that engage people. and to connect us with the wonderment of nature. the detail on this surface book is amazing. with the tiger image, the saliva coming off and you got this turning. that's why i need this kind of resolution and computing power. being able to use a pen like this.
12:34 pm
on the screen directly with the image. it just gives me a different relationship to it. and i can't do that on my mac. this is brilliant for me. ♪ welcome back, everybody. we're here with a fox news alert with donald trump just wrapping up a campaign rally just moments ago in fountain hill, arizona, just outside of phoenix. he was all fired up, speaking to his supporters out there. our own dan springer was there, as well. he's joining us live with more on the rally. dan, great to see you. i know there was a lot of security out there ahead of some of the protests. give us a sense of the type of security that way, and particularly with sheriff joe arpaio in charge of the security operations in that area. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, uma. sheriff joe, in fact, took the stage and introduced donald trump about an hour late, mind
12:35 pm
you. part of that is because of the protests that took place several miles from here with some protesters stopping vehicles as they were getting to this location, a big park. but this is a massive rally. we can show around -- we look at the massive number of people here. well above the 10,000 people that they anticipated showing up at this park. and, of course, the vast majority of them are pro trump. but you do have people who are carrying signs who are anti trump, seeing signs like "love trump's hate." and we have seen skirmishes. not physical altercations, but yelling. people yelling back and forth. you know, their positions on trump. but, you know, this is democracy. we heard one reporter from another network saying this is a tinder box. this was not a tinder box, just people voicing their expressions about donald trump, pro and against. but, again, a big rally. donald trump wrapped up a few minutes ago. his biggest applause line, not surprisingly here in arizona with a very large illegal
12:36 pm
immigration population. his biggest applause line was when he vowed again to build that wall. uma? >> yeah, a big applause for that. we mentioned the fact he wants to make good on that promise to build the wall. dan springer, thank you very much for that update in arizona. appreciate it. we'll check back with you later in the afternoon. well, john kasich and ted cruz -- >> enough delegates. and guess what? that's the process of picking the nominee. and by the way, today in one of the big national reports, they say that if we have a convention, they're going to pick the most experienced and the person who can beat hillary clinton in fall. and guess who they said that was? me. okay? thank you. >> we have a very direct path to 1,237 delegates to winning the nomination outright. and that's what we are campaigning hard to do. >> well, john kasich and ted
12:37 pm
cruz there talking about the battle for the all-important delegates, 1,237. needed to secure the republican nomination. now none of the three remaining candidates in the race get to that magic number, that raises the possibility of a contested convention. all of this means the spotlight would fall on a group of gop insiders who could set the rules at the gathering come july in cleveland. here to talk about that, former house speaker, newt gingrich, and fox news contributor. he's here with his take on what's at play right now. >> i know that you have said publicly you really believe that the trump campaign is a genuine phenomenon. and that you really want the gop elites to just stop trying to prevent him from winning this nomination at this point. if that continues, how concerned are you about the backlash and you also believe that he does
12:38 pm
have a path to winning against hillary clinton, even though many polls are showing she has an edge against mr. trump at this point. >> well, it's essential -- essentially, those are two very different questions. let me take them one by one. first, i think it's perfectly fine for ted cruz to fight all the way to the convention. i think it's fine for anybody who doesn't want donald trump to fight all the way to the convention. the folks that bother me are the ones that say "never trump" like they're somehow going to help hillary clinton get elected. i think that's not smart and not acceptable. second, let's look briefly at the fall campaign. ronald reagan in it march of 1980, was 25 points behind jimmy carter. and if you had said in march of 1980, that ronald reagan will win a landslide in the electoral college, pick up six u.s. senate seats, giving republicans control of the senate and pick up 33 house seats, people would have thought you were crazy. the fact is, as we get to the general election, i think that if it hillary clinton is the
12:39 pm
nominee, she will gradually melt and i think she has too many things she can't explain. i think donald trump is bringing an amazing number of new people into the party. and let me say also, ted cruz has an appeal to conservatives across both parties. it could be very powerful. it could be very effective. so i think we've got two strong candidates competing for the nomination. and i'm comfortable that either one of them could win the general election. >> why do you think the gop establishment continues to fight this? >> well, i mean, if you were a washington republican old-timer and you really disliked ted cruz a year ago, the idea that cruz is the more acceptable candidate is a nightmare. the country -- the republican voters and the independents and democrats who are coming into the republican party are all sending the same signal. they are sick and tired of washington. they're sick and tired of bureaucracy. they're sick and tired of having left wing values imposed on them. they're sick and tired of america losing in the world. and so if you're the washington
12:40 pm
establishment, this just shakes you to your boots. and you thought cruz was toal unacceptable and now you decide trump is worse. and these poor folks have just melting. they're going to have a very bad spring. a number of them are going to need to find therapists. a few will have to find bars. people have got to find their own road to reality. hopefully most will come around to the fact that the people who are out there campaigning who are getting millions of votes deserve the respect to the rest of us. and that as party officials, we ought to be very committed to making sure that the republican party is unified and is prepared to do its job from cleveland on at the neck -- when we have our national convention to actually win the election this fall. >> how concerned are you about the polarization right now within the party, given the fact that there are a number of establishment types who are saying they're not going to vote if mr. trump or mr. cruz becomes the nominee, that they're going to stay home? does it matter at this point,
12:41 pm
those kind of threats? >> well, i think it matters in the sense that they could elect hillary clinton and they could guarantee a very left wing supreme court. they could guarantee power to the union bosses who sustain the current failing bu accuracies. these are big decisions. these are not risk-free decisions. i look and think what kind of moral position is it to say that people went out there, worked hard and got millions of votes, aren't worthy of your support when the alternative is hillary clinton? i find that a very miystifying position. >> so there has been all this talk about the secret meetings taking place in d.c., trying to figure out what to do about trump and cruz. when this information comes out, is it any wonder why the public continues to be so put off by this, because this is exactly what the public has been fighting against. and so tired of in terms of business as usual. so this is happening at a time when the public is saying, we've had enough.
12:42 pm
>> yeah. well, i mean, first of all, the message whether you're -- whether you are for cruz or you're for trump or earlier for carson, the message again and again over 80% of the delegates have been won by people who were against washington. so the washington insiders, instead of saying, gee, maybe we've done something wrong, are gathering and saying, boy, those voters are sure stupid, don't understand how clever we are. also, i heard about on thursday there was some secret meeting of republican leaders. and i looked at the list. none of them were leaders. none of them held office. none of them were important. none of them were in leadership positions. these are self-appointed publicists who got together to gripe. and i remember in 1980, ronald reagan was wasn't pure enough. and a whole bunch of conservative activists were for phil crane or john connelly or somebody, because reagan wasn't a real conservative. they just didn't matter. he ran over all of them and turned out he was a pretty good conservative, cut taxes,
12:43 pm
modernized government. and thereafter i was also always for reagan. the people i have so far are not leaders of the republican party, they're noise-makers. they have no real standing to define for republicans what we should do. >> and our thanks to speaker gingrich. and coming up, we are going to shift gears and bring you breaking news out of europe. on those paris attacks last november. what we're now learning about the master minds, and more about his arrest, coming up next.

bigger underneath that tip is a ideological movement. our burrows, facilitating the ideology, the radical imams. there are 600 fighting from belgium and 150 from molenbeek. and four months later after the paris attacks on november 13, this man was in molenbeek, and there were actually some that went through the streets when the police had the shootout and throwing stones and calling him a hero, et cetera. so we, as an interior minister in belgium said, back in november, he said we have a serious problem. and it's not only in molenbeek, a lot of areas in europe and also in america, where we have not targeting the ideology, and we think these are all just one-off terror incidents. >> we're running out of time. but quickly, what does this say about these neighborhoods and what do you expect in terms of security going forward? particularly when we are seeing residents of these communities

sheltering terrorists who are wanting to wage war against the west? >> well, it says that the moderate muslim organizations are not really engaged in exposing the ideologues. and also that we have a much deeper problem says we have a much deeper problem looking for weapons and terrorists that there are actually communities more involved with conspiracy theories and think the state is the enemy and are part of the movement of isis rather than secular state loyalty. that's why as the president of france said this is an act of war that happened in november and belgium and other countries need to start treating it like they're in a war and engage muslim communities against that war ideology. >> always great to have you on the show. thanks for joining us with your insights. obviously, this is a story we'll be following closely. a quick break, come back with more after this.
